Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy are some powerful forms of therapy that can help teach us more about ourselves and how we relate to others. These types of therapy can give us the tools that can help us go from reactive to responsive.
The medically responsible thing to say here is "seek a licensed professional" however, I am a child of chaos, so I'll let you in on a little secret: you don't need a therapist to start CBT or DBT. There are many online resources to help get you started. You can research these techniques at your leisure and implement what resonates with you.
I'm not saying that everyone should ditch the industry and start self-diagnosing and self-medicating, that would be anarchy; I'm merely suggesting that if you're in a position where you don't have the resources to get professional help, or you're not sure if you want to plunge down the clinical rabbit hole, or if you've been to sixteen different therapists, counsellors, psychologists, and psychiatrists, may or may not have been the direct or indirect cause of three early retirements, and your favorite counsellor joined the Armed Forces because "it would be less stressful," there are still opportunities for you to empower yourself.

hi angel! what type of therapy do you do? and has it been helpful? i have cptsd as well and personally never had much luck with the therapists i’ve had…
hiiii !!!! 🩷🪽the therapist i see is a trauma/complex trauma informed psychologist, once i found one with those approaches & deeper training things got a lot easier! i originally started out with DBT, where i did 4 weeks inpatient in group therapy, while having one on one sessions with my psychologist, and that really helped a lot of the emotional outburst behaviours, self harm & suicidal ideation, as it helped me learn how to recognise and understand my emotions and the levels they’re sitting at, so i can recognise meltdowns before they happen, as well as learning ways that actually work to deescalate my 10/10 level emotions more than the usual tactics given in things like CBT therapy. inpatient isn’t ideal or accessible for everyone, so DBT can also be accessed in some places via online group meetings (i did another 4 weeks online a few years after my admission) and through out patient clinics!
another form of therapy that has savedddd me from intense flashbacks and all that stuff that comes with cptsd was EMDR. this one takes a while to work up to and you need a therapist who is trained in it, but it’s honestly life changing. explaining it simply it basically helps disconnect memories / thoughts / beliefs from emotions.
schema & internal family systems therapy has also helped a lot with processing trauma and understanding myself & why/how i cope 🩷
