I finally watched the Rupert and the Frog song (We all Stand Together). I still see people (mostly older, mostly on Facebook) dunking on “the frog chorus” and it’s just so clearly an outdated notion for it to be lame for a musician to make content explicitly for children. It’s so common now for artists who’ve become parents to make something their kids will enjoy. Jack White sang a song with the muppets on Sesame Street because he loves his fucking kids. It’s so normal now.

I get where Mary Had a Little Lamb released as single by a rock band went down wrong .. but this is creative, whimsical content explicitly *for* kids. The SONG, in particular, is beautifully composed, imaginative. Lovely! I keep listening to it.

He was 20 years into his career. The Beatles were never Led Zeppelin. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around people still being so weird about this. He such a well rounded musician; it’s all like an exploration in another part of his creativity. There are elements of the classical composing that would come later… and the playful, experimenter who made Robber’s Ball (my beloved), McCartney II, the Fireman records.

But anyway, watching this today reminded me of this moment from Behind the Scenes of BBC Radio where someone presented Paul and Mike with their childhood Rupert book. The title page filled in by their parents reads “This book belongs to Paul McCartney and Michael McCartney”.

It was either Paul or Mike who said they didn’t get many gifts as kids and for Christmas they’d usually get one toy addressed to Paul and Michael from Father Christmas. It makes me really consider why this Rupert project was so important for him that he held onto it for 15 years, always sort of considering ideas for it. There were those RAM era songs that were specifically for the “Rupert project”. It comes up so much in the McCartney legacy book.

Then there’s the element of the frogs and his history with frogs, from growing the tadpoles in his own hand made frog pond in the backyard and checking on them every day until one day they were frogs that hopped away. Then there was the dark, frog killing episode that shocked his brother and he probably felt some shame about.

But here, in this story, there are guard frogs on duty protecting their mostly undisturbed world. Happy and content, it’s the frogs that create this magical chorus.

There’s even a father and son frog pair who’ve come to see this event that only happens every couple of hundred years.

The father is rather Jim McCartney-esque with his pipe and 1940s style hat and manner. There’s a moment where the son inadvertently annoys his father and instantly recoils like he’s about to get hit and momentarily it looks like the father is considering it but gets a hold of himself.

But later, wrapped up in the music together, the father hugs his son.

I don’t know what I’m saying exactly but I think there’s some exploration of his childhood here and something about Rupert and the frog chorus that’s particularly meaningful to him.

Maybe he’s reconciling the dark, frog killing episode of childhood with the vegetarian, animal lover he’d become by giving the frogs their own hero’s story. Rupert, Jim, the threat of violence, the presence of love, the frogs he loved but also was violent toward.. and music at the center of everything. Unifying, healing. We all stand together.

Charlie Dalton

i’m not sure that i could pinpoint very many artists he’d particularly like, but this is a classic rock boy right here. he’d be into ac/dc, motley crue, led zeppelin, etc. perhaps a bit of duran duran (this is where i’m projecting the most.) songs about s3x and women, and songs that make him feel like the rebel he is. (this playlist has been gale hansen approved on twitter btw)

Neil Perry

oh i just know this kid would be into some funk and pop, especially 80s and perhaps even new wave (i’m again projecting). now THIS is a duran duran fan (specifically their early stuff), which is unsurprising since the lead singer has a drama degree. he’d also probably like fleetwood mac, and would be well-versed in the band’s drama. duran duran, wham!, fleetwood mac, abba, maybe even some hall & oates. songs with complex lyrics and also songs that make him wanna dance. lots of upbeat stuff because though he has things that bother him, he’d rather do anything but dwell on them.

Todd Anderson

honestly, considering they’re roommates, i feel like neil would’ve had a bit of an impact on todd’s music taste, so there’s some band influence there—but regardless, i think todd would be into more mellow and emotional songs. jeff buckley comes to mind, along with the eagles, the beatles and maybe a splash of the smiths also pls pretend now and then didn’t come out last year. he would also be letting it linger i fear

Knox Overstreet

knox would be similar to Charlie, as they probably bond over shared music taste just as much as everything else. very heavy on the classic rock, but a lean more towards songs about needing someone and love songs as he pines for Chris. Tom Petty, Robert Palmer, The Cars, and a bunch of songs introduced to him by Charlie. He sticks more to genre/theme than to a specific artist methinks

Richard Cameron

contrary to what some may think, i think Cameron would absolutely groove to some rock n roll. HOWEVER. he is a 60s-70s rock n roll elitist. he thinks Billy Idol’s cover of Mony Mony is a disgrace. he wholeheartedly believes the Beatles are the best band to have ever graced the planet. The Beatles, The Beach Boys. The Rolling Stones, etc. Maybe even some Simon & Garfunkel. Him and Charlie argue a lot about which decades were the best years of rock music

Ok, this was actually so hard. I tried to do both time period accurate but also today what they would listen to.

Elijah

Elijah would be super pretentious with it and pretend he only has a Spotify account to listen to classical music in the car, because of course live or vinyl is the only way music should be consumed. But we all know he was in his room listening to some Lana, Adele, Dean Lewis, etc. My boy likes to listen to music that makes him feel his sadness. He also really just appreciates well produced music so I think he would really enjoy Billie and Finneas. I also think he would really have liked music in the late 1900s. He would have really enjoyed The Beatles, Billy Joel, Queen, Journey, etc.

Elijah would be obsessed with Hozier. The lyrics, the storytelling, the music, the history. He would learn all of the songs on piano. He would also really like David Kushner and Dermot Kennedy.

No memories Elijah liked to dance and I can just see him really enjoying Conan Gray. He gets to dance and cry all at the same time. But come on, Family Line is his song.

Hayley

I've seen people say Hayley would love Taylor Swift, but she was far too much of a "pick me" for that. She would have been listening to more rock or angry music. The early 2010s were peak emo music. My girl would have been listening to My Chemical Romance, The All-American Rejects, Green Day, Foo Fighters, etc. But she would pretend they were too mainstream for her. She would tell people she only listens to her version of the classics: Metallica, Pantera, Iron Maiden, Avenged Sevenfold, etc.

As she got older, it would be less angsty, but still emotional. Some Halsey, Lorde, Alessia Cara. Hope would get her to listen to Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter, she would enjoy it but tell Hope she needs to listen to the classic. They would both really enjoy listening to Heart, Pat Benatar, and Janet Jackson together.

Klaus

I honestly can't picture Klaus listening to music unless he is painting. So it just depended on his mood and his painting. I could definitely see him painting to Lana and Christina Perri, maybe even some James Arthur. I could see him getting high, listening to Bob Marley or Pink Floyd and painting. He would have enjoyed classic rock.

Hope would try to get him into pop music but he would only listen to the ones he didn't consider basic. He would vibe with Noah Kahan and Phoebe Bridgers.

Cami

Cami was definitely a party girl in Undergrad. She took her classes seriously but she knew how to let loose on the weekends. She was an OG listener to Beyoncé, Rihanna, Charli xcx, etc. Cami would also really love women empowerment music. She would love JoJo (not Siwa, the original), Julia Michaels, Kesha, Lady Gaga.

We just know she would love Because I Liked a Boy since she literally lived it.

She would have loved Paris Paloma if she had lived long enough.

Rebekah

I'm struggling with Rebekah a little bit. But I think she would listen to more soft pop music. Like Julia Michaels, Rachel Chinouriri, Lewis Capaldi, Mariah Cary (her older music), etc. But Rebekah would eat up boy bands too. She would definitely have fan girl'ed for the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC had she not bee daggered during their prime. She would enjoy Harry Styles and Jess McCartney.

She would have been so mad at Klaus for keeping her daggered during the 90s girl bands. She would have been obsessed with Spice Girls and Destiny's Child.

Freya

I see Freya being a country pop girl. She would have been exposed to such little music each time she was awaken. But I think she would have really liked Kelly Clarkson, Miranda Lambert, Dolly Parton, Kacey Musgraves, etc. She would be obsessed with Shania Twain. She would always stand up and dance to Man I feel like a Woman every time it came, loving living in a time where she could be a woman and free.

But she also liked to dance and have fun. She would have loved Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Sean Paul, Beyonce, etc. Beyonce's Cowboy Carter would be on repeat. But she would be willing to listen to anything. Hope would constantly be showing her new music.

She would love Chappell Roan, Renee Rapp, Kehlani, Fletcher, Muna, Hayley Kiyoko, Towa Bird, etc. Any sapphic artist.

Kol

All I know about Kol is that he doesn't like Icelandic folk music. He would like slow music to dance to and then just whatever Davina liked. Davina would be introducing him to Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, etc., and whatever club music Josh was listening to.

Also, just Kol listening to Rude by MAGIC! on repeat because we know Marcel never warmed up to him.

If they all had lived, Josh, Cami, Freya, Davina, and Kol would have been obsessed with Brat.

Finn

I don't know if Finn ever lived long enough to enjoy music. I think music would honestly be so overwhelming to him. He went from music being a harp and lute to the insane production we have today. I think just starting him off listening to Chopin or Mozart before throwing him into Ariana Grande would be wise. This man wouldn't even know what a piano is. I think he would eventually enjoy more soul or jazz music. Like Leon Bridges, Etta James, Frank Ocean. Especially being in New Orleans. He would like to go to jazz bars and just discover new artists.

Hope

Hope would get all of these people listening to modern music. She would be dragging them to go see Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, etc. And I just know her and Freya would go see Chappell.

1960’s music w the mercs

Medic - I believe that Medic is a very chaotic music lover. He has a background of classical in some way, with his fascination for it in the game and it’s bled outward into loving loud booms and the thrill of it speeding up.

So maybe some early forms of rock? Especially if it’s Peggy Peter’s. He sings like shit though.

Heavy - I’m not going to lie, this immediately came to me. Heavy loves pop. Heavy loves a bouncy little jig that he can play while cleaning Sasha. He probably got it from his sisters. I also believe that he has a very strong sense of political beliefs about his country so pop that has a message.

Definitely Edita Piekha. 100%. Lovely vocals from the gods. A little rattling, but He is a perfect bass.

Scout - HE WOULD LOVE CHUCK BERRY. That man hums ‘My Ding-a-ling’ as he showers. Absolutely.

He has Sex Bomb tattooed, but I’m sure his favorite Tom Jones song is actually It’s Not Unusual. He screeches when he sings instead of singing higher.

Demo - I see him being into much older songs for his age (he’s like nearly 30) just because of the way his mother raised him. I think he’s got an older soul than he thinks. So 1940’s swing and soul. Strong believer that he has more than a few albums that he cherishes, but most of them are from his mom.

He cries every time he puts it on though, just to let the feelings out. When he’s drunk, he sings terribly, when he’s sober? Probably still a little bad but he doesn’t know his range and doesn’t care if he’s tone deaf.

Pyro - I have personal ideas about Pyro that makes me think he is a huge Jimi Hendrix fan. I refuse to explain or elaborate as I will be here all day.

All Along the Watchtower. He bounces whenever it’s played.

Sniper - Jazz. I know it’s an easy answer, but it’s also THE RIGHT ONE. I think he’s very much a “nod his head and listen” type of music lover as a posed to “can’t stop moving” sort of guy.

He also probably prefers wordless music, for focus, and lyrics in music when he’s alone. (He is dancing in his room when no one’s around.)

Soldier - FUCKING HATES THE BEATLES. I’m almost tempted to say the only thing he listens to is music about WAR. But he’s probably into punk music. But I’m sure he fucks up and listens to anti war songs instead of actual war songs. So he’s accidentally listening to ‘hippie music’. No one has the will to explain it to him.

His favorite song is probably Gene Stridel - What do you win when you win a war. But only when he’s more self aware, more aware of his situation. It comes and goes. Soldier refuses to sing the song, ever. But it’s close to his heart, even if he sometimes doesn’t know why.

Spy - secretly a hippie. Definitely into Yé-yé, a type of french-ized version of British pop/exotica (like THE BEATLES.) He shows Soldier his music taste and it sends him into a rage. I think he takes pleasure in it.

Especially Baroque Yé-yé. Very Spy feely. Also Scout’s mom has probably shown him some Josephine Baker, and he likes it. Sings in a snooty little voice but it sounds pleasant enough. He thinks he’s the best singer in the team. (it’s heavy)

Engineer - GOD, you’re so right. Johnny Cash is the most fitting for him. I feel like he’s definitely a music sharer and taker. He carries songs from the people who he loves around with him. I think his mom loves Tammy Wynette and it’s crossed over to him.

Why do I feel like Hotch would also secretly listen to some of the most commercial pop anthems because when he brings Jack to school they always listen to the radio. Whenever there's an upbeat song that sparks his son's interest he would turn the volume up so they can start singing it together.

Ok now visualize "Hotchner carpool karaoke" and how hilarious it would be: firstly because I'm 100% sure Jack would obsess over catchy pop songs, how artists who have either a high-pitched voice or use a lot of high notes in their songs would be the ones that appeal the most to him (because he can easily sing along). Poor Aaron with that deep voice of his always needs to sing one octave lower (imagine how ridiculous the both of them would sound). Last time the older Hotchner attempted to sing a high note his son bullied him for an entire week; and now whenever they encounter that song Jack always begs him to recreate that cacophonic sound, it has now become a tradition.

Of course as soon as Jack steps out of that car Aaron IMMEDIATELY plays some classic rock beats to cleanse his soul; But slowly he also begins to appreciate some commercial songs, even if almost all of them lack the presence of a complex guitar solo, an element that somehow can never fail to speak to his brain.

Hotch's extended playlist has a mixture of his son's favourite songs and his classic beats he hasn't changed since the 90s; if you ever happen to step in that car you could either listen to the most niche song put out by The Beatles or Call Me Maybe, there's no in between.

james- I think he'd be a big fan of all the music of the now and maybe 10 ish years earlier. lots of sixties duwopy pop-rock like the beatles, the zombies and the turtles but also more contemporary stuff; Fleetwood Mac, Wings, the Pretty Things, Frank Zappa, the Eagles, Queen and Bowie (not glam, disco. so like thin white Duke era- not that he'd mind glam bowie I just think he'd prefer disco bowie)! also I think like Ambrosia and other 70s pop he'd dig.. but I think he would be totally in love with Fleetwood Mac, especially their album Mystery to Me- because it would remind him of lily. I think he, along with alice, would get lily more into fleetwood mac.

lily - I think she'd really prefer 50s rock and jazz .. blues and soul too, though I don't think she'd mind later rock. she just seems very buddy holly/chet baker/frank sinatra/ray charles/ella fitzgerald/nina simone, I also think she'd really like otis redding but he's 60s lol, oh and I think she would've LOVED the monkees when she wad younger and would think theyre brilliant.

sirius - glam glam glam and then also punk from the late 70s-81.. also goth+post punk music (ie. the cure, echo and the bunnymen, the smiths, siouxsie and the banshees, depeche mode, joy division ect ect) but I always think of goth as sort of a mid-late 80s thing so I don't think he'd have really been exposed to alot of goth bands because he was. in jail... but I think David Bowie, T. Rex, Lou Reed, the Velvet Underground, and then like Television, Patti Smith, the Clash, Iggy Pop, the Stooges. yk.. but also a lot of what James listens to as well!:3 bc they r bff! also I think remus and sirius share great love for queen :)

regulus - lots of classical and jazz, but not in the way severus is like pretentious, I mean coming from a muscianship standpoint. I think he'd especially love miles davis jazz wise and beethoven+liszt classical music wise (ie. I think he'd have a great love for romantic music, even though beethoven isn't usually considered romantic- just LISTEN to moonlight sonata, it is DRIPPING with the emotion of romantic music).

We're gonna jump right into it, there were a lot of questions...

If Sam and Dean got hit by the Djinn again what do they think their Djinn dream would be now?

Jared thinks probably the same and Jensen concurs that it's probably the go-to thing for both; they always dreamed of this slice of normalcy and even though they know that’s something that would never work for them they still hold that in their idea of what they missed.

Jared asks the fan what they think, and they reply that at least from their interpretation they think it might be different after the boys met their mom since Dean saw her in such high regard then when he met her he got more realistic expectations. Jensen says that may have shed some light into that relationship and what the history was behind that but he still thinks Dean would have this wishful idea of what life could have been, and he would have held it as a bit of a dream even though he knows it would never really be like that.

In regards to their acting process, if someone was put in front of them and they were told this person was a demon, could they jump right into character or does it take them some time?

Jared asks if he has to marry them as well…..it's been a while since he's pulled the my wife is a demon bit and that's all I'm gonna say about that....

Jensen says that he thinks when they’re on set it’s much easier to flip that switch. 

Jared says when it comes to the acting process there's a lot of prep that goes into it. So, if somebody was just there like 'hey I'm a demon, action' he'd be wondering what he's supposed to be doing, does he like them, is he using them, are they using him so there's so much thought that goes into it before it that if there was a script- if that was the first scene they filmed in that script then he's already done a couple dozen reads of it and thought about how Sam would feel and where this is in the episode and if it's climactic so there's a lot of prep.

Jensen says he and Jared are similar in the fact that they know a scene going into it, they know the way, the points they have to hit but the in-between is the stuff that they kind of allowed to be discovered. They had ideas about how they wanted to get from point A to point B but the great thing about getting to work with Jared is that it was never overly rehearsed, they were reacting to what each other did so they were available for the happy accidents that happened within scenes. That being said they knew where they needed to go, and what point to hit so he thinks snapping into that with the knowledge of kind of a roadmap made it much easier to get into character and also made it easier to riff while you’re in that character to come up with maybe some improv but just sitting there on stage and being like 'hey, be Dean'- Jared’s right there’s a little bit more prep that goes into it in order for them to step into those shoes. x

Favorite bands or artists growing up or in general?

Jared answers Pearl Jam.

Jensen says he grew up with a lot of different music in his house, his dad would listen to a lot of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet but he'd also listen to more modern classic rock and his mom listened to country music so he doesn’t know he could pick and choose dozens of bands. He’ll say a band that has never gotten old to him, cause some music you listen to it so long that you might tire of it a little bit, but there are obvious choices like Zeppelin and the Stones even the Beatles but he’ll say the Allman Brothers. He still feels he’s discovering their music even though he’s been listening to it most of his life. x

What are Sam and Dean's biggest regrets?

Jared, once again, answers that one of Sam’s bigger regrets is Amelia. He thinks Sam would have felt bad about the time that he didn’t go after his brother although he thinks the last time he understood that his brother was saying goodbye and he had to give him that farewell.

Jensen says that for Dean he doesn’t know but he’ll choose one: that he couldn’t save C. x

What was it like filming that scene in Mystery Spot where they say the same lines at the same time?

Jared says Jensen kept messing it up. It was hectic trying to say it, and it was a rough episode to film. 

Jensen agrees and comments it was probably more difficult for Jared. He does remember getting frustrated cause there was a word that kept being added and he couldn’t- it was stuck in his head but there’s probably a good amount of outtakes from that moment.

Also, the fan who asked this question was sad because they had missed their photo op with Jensen but he took a minute to go and take some pics with them with Jared as the photographer. x

What actress besides their wives would they pick to act with and would they do it in a show or movie?

Jared says some of the actresses on Ozark are so raw and real that he’d love to work with them like Julia Garner. 

Jensen is always interested in working with people he can learn from because neither he nor Jared are formally trained, what they know they've learned on the job from watching those who were successful that they got to work with, and as long as their careers have been there's always more you can learn and there's always people that you can learn from so he’d want to work with somebody he thinks it’s a crazy talent like Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet these incredibly talented artists that he thinks would hopefully elevate his game. x

What is their favorite acting role from their early days, and which did they get the most grief for when they did it?

Jensen answers Alec from Dark Angel is probably one he wishes he could have spent a little more time with, and the one he probably wouldn’t mind erasing is Devour. That he could have done without it although to be fair that movie was being re-written as they were filming it so he didn’t even know how that story would end while they were shooting.

For Jared, he will say one of his favorite roles was Gilmore Girls but he wishes he knew then what he knows now. He was a nervous kid, he was 17 when they shot the first two episodes and he was used to doing plays in school so he thinks he came in a little theatrical and didn't really know the technique of it; he grew along the way but it was a lot of fun and a great learning experience over the 5yrs that he worked on it. Everybody starts somewhere and he kind of started there, and there are some scenes that he went and watched to re-learn what Dean Forester was like for the Year in the Life Netflix special and he was like 'oh, this is a good show. oh, I suck' but that it was a fun time. x

In French Mistake where were they while Sam and Dean were in our universe? 

Jared passes the questions off to Jensen saying he really wants to answer it 😂

Jensen replies that he would imagine that if the writers had been asked this question they might have had an answer that sounded like when Sam and Dean entered into that universe at the same time the Jensen and Jared that were supposed to be there were sent somewhere else to make space for these two new ones so they wouldn’t destroy the space-time continuum. x

Did Jared get his knee surgery?

He did not but he did a lot of physical therapy. It’s still kind of wonky but he’s feeling good and he was ready to shoot on Thursday. x

Do they think Sam and Dean’s relationship is more influenced by being brothers or by being born in a different generation and growing up differently?

Jared answers brothers. He thinks the fact that they were brothers is really what made them behave the way they did with each other and with others. That there’s something great about SPN the relationship between Sam and Dean nothing was off limits, there were times when they would keep secrets from each other and found out later but otherwise, it was one of those you know you hear stuff like you always hurt the ones you love it’s like you can be yourself with somebody who knows you and understands when you're going through a tough time so he thinks the fact that Sam and Dean could ultimately bounce anything off of each other is what really helped them develop their relationship.

Jensen agrees, that it’s the fact that they’re brothers but he’ll also say that it’s not a generation or time thing because he thinks you could take those two brothers in any generation or time and there would be a similar story. It might look a little different but he thinks it would still be very, very similar and he thinks that’s one of the things we all like about the show that it is kind of timeless. That story of two brothers not just fighting the good fight but fighting for each other is a universal story and could be told in any time you could take it to medieval times or you could take it into the future and he thinks it would ring the same. x

If they could do a whole new show together completely on their own what would it be?

Jared says for sure he can’t wait for them to get their heads together and talk about seeing Sam and Dean again. And he also thinks it would be fun to do a comedy.

Jensen says doing something like The Nice Guys would be fun; he thinks the dynamic they got to establish over the past 15 years could be put in a lot of different scenarios. So, as long as they have that they can do whatever. x

Favorite moment with their family this year?

Jared says going to Australia for the holidays. They got to see the Sydney fireworks from the balcony of the house they rented and it was a fun moment to see how happy the kids were; most of the time seeing the kids play and kind of forget about their worries is a lot of fun. So watching the fireworks with them in Sydney was really special.

Jensen says there’s a lot, and they were given the gift of time off this year for an unfortunate reason because of the strikes but that gave them a lot of time to spend with family. He’ll say they took trips and all of them were very memorable but one thing he sees when he closes his eyes is when the kids come home from school, when he gets to pick them up and ask them about their day and that little drive home, and watching them sprint out to play on their playset and the trampoline and the dog chasing them he just sits on the back porch and watches them play, that’s what he sees when he closes his eyes. x

Does Jensen plan on doing another live Radio Company show soon?

He was just talking about this with somebody backstage, there are no hard plans, but it is definitely being discussed. x

What was their favorite episode of SPN to film?

Jared asks if in hindsight or at the time because he looks back and he says French Mistake looking back now he loves it but he was so anxious the entire time, he was so nervous that he didn’t have a great time filming it but in hindsight, he loves the memory of having filmed it. It was nerve-wracking because he had to be funny and the things he had to do and this is when he realized he was talking about Changing Channels 😂 But in hindsight it was amazing but while filming it he was thinking it might be the worst thing that's happened to him in his life. Sacrifice is another that was awful to film but he loves that he got to experience it. It was three days in an abandoned church with Mark Sheppard but it was stressful during it. Same with Swan Song, it's amazing in his head now but during it he hated it.

Jensen mentions that with The End, he thinks it's a similar thing because it was such a challenge to shoot those particular episodes, and when it comes to The End it was very taxing shooting that particular episode for him cause he was playing two versions of Dean but it's one he looks back on it with great pride because of how challenging it was. He will say one of his favorite episodes to film was the very last ep because they had gotten to a point where he and Jared could truly appreciate and reflect on the magnitude of the moment that was happening in front of them; when he got into that car and drove it in as Dean in Heaven he knew that was going to be the final drive for this run of the show which he thinks he has video of, he set his phone up on the seat and recorded that final drive. And the moment on the bridge, there were moments he and Jared took - multiple moments - that they took for themselves without the cameras rolling, and so he thinks that was precious for him and meant so much because of the journey they had gone on and where they had ended up together. But if you ask him what was fun Yellow Fever was fun.

Jared agrees 100% and says he thinks the only episode that he really feels he just had fun during was Baby because it wasn’t the Sam and Dean show it was the Baby show.

Jensen says it was also the most unique process of filming for an episode cause they just mounted cameras to the car and sent them out into the wild fingers crossed hoping the boys would get the scenes. 

Jared says it was the first time in a decade and a half they weren’t going to the set for a show about Sam and Dean this episode was about Baby so it felt like less pressure. And Jensen comments that it's one of his favorite episodes too. x

What do they think happened to the Richesters in Rio?

Jared replies wait for season 16 to find out. He says he does have the purple blazer there was no reason for it to get used again and when a piece of clothing gets made for him it'll never fit anybody else so they gave it to him, and Jensen says he has the suede jacket because they bought it and it was so expensive they couldn't get a double so it never got used, it was just sitting in a closet and they gave it to him to wear cause he didn’t have to do any stunts and then it went home with him.

Jared says the Richesters are having a good time at Carnival in Rio. x

Is there a family tradition during Christmas they are looking forward to doing?

Jensen says because D is from Louisiana and his in-laws usually spend the holidays with them, they do a Holiday Gumbo party. D and her mom spend all day making the gumbo, that’s a little piece of Cajun culture they celebrate at Christmas and it’s a favorite among family and friends- he mentions Jared has been a part of a couple of them.

Jared says they have tamales on Christmas day and smokies (aka cocktail sausages). It’s more the food and the midday nap - these days as parents his Christmas is consisting of him getting all the wrapping paper and boxes from the presents and trying to get rid of it and put it outside cause it’s everywhere but then they always have a late breakfast, watch tv, the movies like Home Alone, Die Hard, Love Actually. He shares the story about how when he did Flight of the Phoenix in Africa there was a "movie theater" there - it was someone's garage - and they had three movies one was in German, one was in Afrikaans, and one was Love Actually so he watched Love Actually like 12 times. He goes from Africa to Australia to shoot House of Wax and he was sitting with the cast talking and asked if they had seen Love Actually they all say yes, and he tells them he loves it then notices Elisha (Cuthbert) giving him a funny look and he tells her he means it, that the movie is awesome, that she has to see it he's seen it a dozen times, she keeps looking at him weird and he thought that she didn't think he'd like a romcom or something so he keeps insisting she has to watch it, that he's not kidding he can't wait to watch it again, and that's when she tells him she was in it.

Jensen asks if the elf comes to his house, Jared answers that it does he's moving around. Then Jensen says it’s stressful that elf can ruin a morning for him. x

What color lightsaber would they wield and why?

Jensen automatically answers green because everybody would envy it. Jared wants a double-bladed one like Darth Maul but one side green and one red. Jensen says "you mean Christmas?" and Jared laughs and says yes, cause he loves Christmas he’d be Darth Christmas. x

Besides friends and family, what’s something that they missed while they were filming?

Jensen says a life. 

Jared says during shooting it's not even like you miss things yet, you know you're missing things you're missing birthday parties and weddings and graduations but during it, it’s a different mode you go into. If a friend calls to hang out the answer is no, and you kind of find out who you’re real friends are because they get it, they know you love them but they understand you're busy for the next 8 months. And when you can wade above water and catch your breath that's when you get together with them.

But they wouldn't trade it. 

Jensen says he's missed annual golf trips his friends have done, he's only been able to go to like 2 out of the dozens they've done because he's not available but they understand, and he wouldn’t change it cause he took pride in what he was doing in order to miss it. x

In SPN were there any storylines or parallels that they wish had been expanded upon or explored?

Jared wishes we saw more of Michael!Dean, and more Eileen.

Jensen wishes there had been more Benny. He thought Purgatory could have lasted a little longer than it did, he thought it was a really cool concept and stuff but he gets that they writers had to put the brothers back together, and he probably, had it gone on for a few more eps, been like "can we wrap this up?"

Jared mentions Purgatory was filmed at a place that’s probably the reality equivalent of Purgatory called Panther Paintball it was like an hour's drive from the apartment and it's mud and muck and there's no service, it's shitty, cold, wet, and dark. It was perfect for Purgatory but probably not fun to go film there but in hindsight it's like 'wish I had been able to film there more'. x

What is the best prank that they remember from each other behind the scenes?

Jared says more than a specific prank, early on they realized things would continue to escalate if they started but Jensen is hard to break between action and cut and there was one time during one of the Gadreel episodes when they were at the Bunker, and his line of dialogue was a bit of a tongue twister and he messed up it actually made it to the gag reel and he loves it cause he purposefully basically spoke gibberish to make Jensen break. So it's more within a scene just trying to cut the tension, the slog of working 14-15 hours with a laugh.

Jensen says it was largely impromptu messing with each other, it wasn't anything drawn out or carefully planned. If the opportunity presented itself to mess with each other they would generally do it but it was also trying to make each other laugh. But, as Jared said, they very quickly realized they were much more effective joining forces. So, the pranks weren't really pranks it was really more messing with each other and having a good time, making each other laugh. And there were countless guest stars who went on set and told them it was the most unprofessional, fun set they'd ever been part off and that was one thing that was important to them they always got the work done but they also sure as hell had a fun time getting it done. x

What would they recommend to someone who has never been to Austin to see or visit, other than Family Business?

Jared says Family Business for sure and then depending on what time of year you are there if you're there between March and November he would recommend staying in a hotel room with AC on but honestly if you can make it for one of the festivals like ACL or South by Southwest- just being out and about that part of the reason he loves Austin is the feeling that people have it just feels like a group of friends so he would recommend trying to find a sporting event or a concert.

Jensen says what you wanna do is take a nice, maybe fall evening, and late in the afternoon take a walk in Town Lake, also known as Ladybird Lake, and then end yourself up on the Congress Street bridge and watch the bats come out from underneath, there are two million bats that live under the bridge and fly out every night and it's like a black cloud of bats, it's pretty amazing. Then maybe keep walking over to Barton Springs, walk down and take a seat at Terry Blacks get some BBQ then maybe that evening go to a show at the Moody theater. This man has provided a whole itinerary.

Jared says if there’s time left he has Jensen’s address so DM him, and Jensen replies to come on by he'll probably have some gumbo 😂 x

Yeah of course, Anon!! Thanks so much for asking, it's always a ball talking about my little creachers *shakes up the cardboard shoebox that I keep them in*

Dian & Nausikaa are both very good at physical activity in general (Dian is great at dancing as well as most sports if he puts effort in lmao. Nausikaa is very skilled at martial arts as well as swimming/climbing) whereas Nyx is really only good at endurance sports (he's a runner. he's decently fast but the biggest skill he has is running for a long time). Asuka is pretty athletic but he can't do certain sports because of his hypermobility (he will dislocate something, poor boy) and he can't do anything requiring good coordination (Kio @solei-eclipse is helping him with that though). Faisal is fit enough to not be out of breath after going up a few flights of stairs but he doesn't enjoy physical activity and avoids it when possible. He is a drummer so he has pretty good stamina but *shrugs* he does not like exercise. Yumi is not really allowed to exercise by Beau but she's pretty agile/flexible in situations where she's allowed to show that off (I mean, she has really good reaction time).

For the modern AU music taste:

Asuka listens to vocaloid/hyperpop/j-rock and j-pop, as well as jazz and big band music (billie holliday, nina simone, nat king cole) because he's a chaotic motherfucker.

Dian listens to soul/pop/r&b I think? He seems like the type who would pretty much listen to sad music and love songs exclusively. Maybe he even dabbles a little in folk but I dunno

Faisal listens to hip-hop mostly I think but he probably also listens to some rock and alternative stuff and metal? (i don't listen to much metal. like at all. it hurts my head) but like Linkin Park, Childish Gambino, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, Hozier, to name a few.

Nausikaa listens to literally anything. She has no preferences. She mostly listens to Itsaso when it comes to music recommendations so she probably listens to classical/bedroom pop mostly? (sorry @lookatmysillies just making assumptions about your girl's music taste lmao)

Nyx is an eighties/nineties grunge/rock/alternative bitch lmao. Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins, the Cure, Elliott Smith, Weezer, the Breeders, the Pixies, that sort of stuff.

Yumi listens pretty much exclusively to classical music BUT that is not by choice. If she had her way, she would listen to late 20th century rock (blondie, the gogo's, syd barrett, the beatles, david bowie, queen, that sort of thing)

Imma lay some information about Marc Bolan on you coz it's just hanging out in my head for free

Marc Bolan is seriously the greatest wizard who's ever lived. Every other rock legend is really easy to explain. Like Jimmy Page is a great guitarist and writes great riffs and stuff and Robert Plant has an amazing and versatile voice so all that checks out and like Bruce Springsteen is a great songwriter and dynamic performer and The E Street Band is just a fucking excellent band so we all get that and Billy Joel is the fucking Piano Man and Queen is four great singer/songwriters who are also great at instruments and ditto The Beatles and The Stones are a bunch of little freaks being weird and most of them are really good at instruments but we mainly like watching them jumping around saying the filthiest shit we've ever heard and that also makes sense. And like David Bowie is some kind of space goblin with a borderline classical voice who can kick ass on like 7 different instruments and ditto Prince.

All of this makes perfect sense.

And then there is Marc Bolan. Who sold more records in the UK than The Beatles. Like he beat The Beatles at their own game. And what exactly did Marc do? Well, he had this really fast vibrato so it always sounded like he was singing his Torah portion. He was 5'5 and always wore muscle shirts under pink satin suits and feathers and had Barbra Streisand's exact hair. He wrote this kind of free associative poetry that is completely open to interpretation and no one actually knows 100% what any single song is about. Like, some of his biggest hits, people are like, that song is about a car. And then other people are like, you're fucking ignorant, that song is about a PHONE. And these people are still arguing. And he's been dead since 1977.

And the rest of his songs are about weird fucking cockney dudes who just confused the shit out of everyone in the East End where everyone knew their names, but not like their actual names, but like the random shit people called them instead of their names because people didn't know who the fuck they were even though they'd been living there since the dawn of time.

And then there were other songs about how Marc Bolan wanted to have sex with you. But these songs were also ALWAYS about cars. And then there were songs where he'd just sing shit like "we're the leopards" over and over and over again and he'd call it "The Leopards Featuring Gardenia and the Mighty Slug" and I cannot stress this enough, there was no Gardenia or Mighty Slug featured on the album, it was just his wife.

And a major part of Marc's wizardry is that he is consistently name-checked in lists of the greatest guitarists of all time. If you go back to his first, I don't know, 7 albums or whatever before like Electric Warrior came out, he was BAD at guitar. So bad that Eric fucking Clapton took pity on him and just straight up showed him how to guitar right. And I'm gonna tangent off to say one thing about this man's personality: he was hella difficult. But like, even after he learned how to guitar real hard, he still wrote songs that had like 3 goddamn chords in them. I'm going through the rolodex in my brain, but he pretty much never wrote a song in a minor key. Life's an Elevator, that one's in a minor key. And then maybe nothing else ever again? He was rocking as hard as is humanly possible with as little as is humanly possible.

Back to the whole Marc was difficult thing: Marc kept pissing everyone in the world off and couldn't keep a band together. Did it matter? NO! His drummers kept mysteriously dying so the answer to who is the drummer in his band, at any point, was A) who is a drummer who is alive? And B) who is a drummer who can tolerate Marc Bolan's personality? And like half of them were named Mickey.

David Bowie tells a good story about meeting Marc Bolan. They were good friends, even though Marc was a giant pain in his ass. I'll let him tell the story because it's just better.

Marc was OBSESSED with Syd Barrett. Fair enough, aren't we all? He used to hang around Pink Floyd's manager's office constantly because of that. If you don't already know, Pink Floyd's manager at the time brought on this very nice woman named June Child to basically look after Syd and then they became lovers, but she was literally an employee of the company. Marc was SO OBSESSED with Syd, he MARRIED JUNE CHILD. He did that.

I've talked a lot here about how he was obsessed with cars, right? Well, he became very rich very fast and bought a fuck ton of old cars. Could he drive? FUCK NO! He was terrified he was going to die in a car crash, that was his greatest fear in life, so he never learned how to drive. And so guess how he died? IN A MOTHERFUCKING CAR CRASH. At 29 years old. Just after quitting cocaine and champagne and starting to get his life back together.

He named his son Rolan Bolan. His songwriting did not get worse on drugs, it just got more lyrically insane, but it was not a far trip. He influenced punks everywhere and is one of the most underrated proto punk artists (example B) and also made a ton of disco at the same goddamn time. So much disco.

He started out doing Lord of the Rings inspired folk and released a boatload of albums like this. He wrote giant fuck off fantasy novels as a teenager called shit like The Krakenmist and Pictures Of Purple People and I think maybe one called The Children of Rarn or maybe that was his poetry collection but he has like 3 different songs called The Children of Rarn anyway. Rarn was the fantasy world he had invented.

Then he went electric and made all of these hard rock/disco/proto punk/boogie albums that we've already covered. And then he died. And he did aaaaaalll of this shit and so much more I couldn't possibly cover or even have knowledge of in a mere 29 years.

So in summary and in summation: a billion albums, an infinite amount of unproduced demos that they keep putting out in compilations to this day, folk, pop, rock, punk, glam, disco, blues, bop, novels, poetry collections, an ironic death, feathers, big hair, AND THE MAN WAS DYSLEXIC AS FUUUUUCK.

I don't know how to describe this man, but Marc Bolan is my hero.

'Since his breakthrough performance in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later over two decades ago, Cillian Murphy has become one of the biggest names in acting. During an interview with the Sunday Independent Life Magazine, he stated: “The only extravagant thing about my lifestyle is my stereo system, buying music and going to gigs.” He still plays and writes alone and with friends and was even featured on a recent single by The Coral.

Expectedly, for someone so well-versed in music, Murphy’s taste is varied. Though he presents on the alternative station BBC Radio 6, his taste stretches beyond dad rock. From the early synth-pop of Christine and the Queens to fellow Irish performer Van Morrison, Murphy has littered his interviews and radio shows with wide-spanning music recommendations. Ok so I’m making these thoughts I have more coherent for this album and also for each song!

Let There Be More Light

I really love the bass line here and the intro (it feels very badass), also the way the song is sung is really cool. It kind of has spooky vibes. I already feel this is a darker (and also more heavy) album than the last one!

2. Remember A Day

This one is really cute! I love Rick’s voice here and the melody. Why do these early Floyd songs all have such incredible melodies??? The instrumental is lovely, especially the piano, and it has great vibes all around.

3. Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun

This is so spooky! I love it. Especially how Roger’s vocals and the instrumental contribute to the dark, intimate, and spooky vibes/atmosphere. The synths here also amazing (I forgot to mention this for The Piper At The Gates of Dawn, the synths there are also amazing). This song honestly gives me old Doctor Who intro vibes. I’ll link it here so you guys know what I mean

4. Corporal Clegg

I love the surreal vibes of this! I also really like the story that is being told here through the lyrics. This song is a banger (the beat/the drums is/are really good here). Honestly a very Beatles-esque song, and it also reminds me of Tommy tbh. Also the kazoos are silly (I love silly things so this is a win for me). I also really like the delivery of the lyrics and the singing/harmonies.

5. A Saucerful of Secrets

Wow the beginning is very ominous! It kind of reminds me of those sounds captured from planets in space (like the Sun or mercury or Venus, if you know what I mean). This song in general gives me vibes like as if it’s portraying a secret extraterrestrial world. Very very creepy and dark. This song reminds me of that one part in echoes with the whale noises only darker. When the drums kick in it feels like there’s a march going on. A very chaotic song, but I can’t help but like it. Kind of sounds like a very very bad acid trip. The ending though with the keys and orchestra and singing is really great and beautiful, it kind of reminds me of a funeral (because of the organ), but it has a very hopeful vibe as well (in contrast to the rest of the song). Maybe there is a hopeful future for this dark and hopeless extraterrestrial world? This part had me ascending because it was so beautiful

Edit: Here’s the video of the sounds of planets if you haven’t heard them before! It’s really fascinating in my opinion (i love space/astronomy stuff), and I think the intro here sounds the closest to how the sun sounds in this video

6. See-Saw

The beautiful vibes of the last song continue here. It has a very lovely sounding melody with an acoustic guitar and piano. The orchestra is beautiful as well (I’m a sucker for an orchestra in classic rock songs). The vocal harmonies are beautiful as well. I’m really realizing how beautiful and lovely Rick’s voice is. This reminds me of a Beatles song as well! Also the wah wah guitar on this album is great (something I really noticed here and on another song). The xylophone here is also a nice addition.

7. Jugband Blues

A very melancholic song in my opinion. The contrast between the sad lyrics and the happy sounding instrumental is very interesting! This provides for a sad/tragic ending to the album (we all know what happened to Syd after this album unfortunately :( ). It also gives me major Space Oddity vibes (maybe Bowie was inspired?). The song gives me the vibes/theme of keeping up a happy facade, even though inside you feel sad/betrayed/angry or you’re losing your mind. It’s also very different from the other songs on this album (it sounds like as if it were from their first album). This feels like the last hurrah from Syd-era Floyd, having bitter and honest lyrics about how Syd feels about the band kicking him out.

In general I really liked this album as well! I am intrigued how the next albums are going to be

That 70s Show: The gang, and their varying music tastes.

In That 70s Show, most of the gang (minus Jackie) loves what we now call stereotypical classic rock. Zeppelin, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Queen, etc. But now and then, we see small glimpses of the gang's varying tastes, from Eric's love for the prog rock band Styx to Donna's Janis Joplin poster on her wall. Here, in this essay, I'm going to present their variations in music taste, as provided by both the show and my realistic speculations (and some real life experiences, via my EDish parents), from character to character.

Donna: She has a singer-songwriter slant/vibe, such as…

Fleetwood Mac, Carole King, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, The Mamas and The Papas, etc.

Also, she'd generally have a slant towards female rock groups and solo artists. Heart, Pat Benatar, Janis Joplin, Joan Jett/The Runaways, and the occasional Blondie tune (mainly, she'd really like Rapture).

She would also, with Eric, like these rock bands more than the others would (they all give me "mom and dad" rock vibes): Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Kansas, The Eagles (and all their solo stuff in the 80s, too).

In the 90s/00s, she would be a fan of Jewel, Alanis Morissette, The Cranberries, Tracy Chapman, The Fugees/Lauryn Hill, Sheryl Crow, Natalie Merchant/10,000 Maniacs, Melissa Etheridge, No Doubt, Evanescence, Alicia Keys, KT Tunstall, etc.

Eric: He has a prog/soft rock vibe, such as…

Chicago, Styx (but he can't stand Mr. Roboto, because Kelso ruined it), Genesis, Pink Floyd, Air Supply, Rush, Foreigner, Boston, The Police, Journey, Supertramp, The Cars, The Doobie Brothers, Simon and Garfunkel, James Taylor, Hall and Oates, Huey Lewis and the News, Genesis, Tears For Fears, Billy Joel, Wings, U2, etc.

He's a huge fan of The Beatles, Paul McCartney in particular. He constantly compares him and Donna to Paul and Linda.

He, along with Hyde, likes more "chill" rock when he's in a good mood, like Eric Clapton and Steely Dan. And James Taylor, after Jackie gets Hyde into it.

See above for the "mom and dad" rock bands. Eric loves "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," though, and Donna hates it.

In the 90s/early 00s, he'd like a lot of the mainstream/less grunge rock of the 90s, such as Matchbox Twenty, The Goo Goo Dolls, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, and Weezer (Weezer is such an Eric-y band). He'd like John Mayer, Five for Fighting, and Michael Buble in the 2000s, and the gang would make fun of him for it.

Fez: He has a mix between an R&B/Motown slant (such as Stevie Wonder) and what I would call a "crappy novelty song" slant. This mix leads him to be a fan of KC and the Sunshine Band, which everyone makes fun of him for (although Kelso likes a couple of songs). He's a huge fan of Queen and Freddie Mercury, and a huge fan of Prince and Michael Jackson (and to a lesser extent, Boyz II Men). He, unfortunately, likes Milli Vanilli (even after they were exposed), Ricky Martin, and Enrique Iglesias (he's not as bad as the first two, though). and all those novelty songs from the late 80s/90s (like Mambo No 5 and the Macarena). Currently, he would be a big fan of Bruno Mars.

Hyde: I'm admittedly less knowledgeable about hard rock, and I'm just gonna throw some well-thought out band names at you. He particularly likes Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Santana, Eric Clapton, and Jimi Hendrix. In the 80s, he hates hair metal, minus maybe Guns N Roses (if that counts; Kelso loves it), and in the 90s, he's a big fan of grunge. Nirvana, Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, etc. He also likes Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lenny Kravitz, and The Black Keys (his kid gets him into it). Jackie gets him to be a fan of James Taylor, Elton John, and Adele (much later), and very occasionally, Billy Joel. He likes Steely Dan when he's in a good mood.

Anywho, I grew up with Eric and Donna "mom and dad" kind of rock (but my dad's a mix of Eric and Jackie music taste wise, and it's the worst) mixed with a bit of some good R&B and Motown (not the crappy Fez kind). My dad grew out of a solid chunk of the harder rock that he listened to as a teen, hence how I personally developed Eric's music taste over time in my verse (it's realistic, frankly). So, if any of you grew up with a parent with Hyde-ish taste in music or just like hard rock yourself (or are just more familiar with it than me), toss some ideas at me.

Jackie: She's the only one that majorly deviates from the classic rock status quo on T7S. She loves ABBA, The Carpenters, David Cassidy (she grows out of that, though), The Bee Gees (my dad does too, eww), Captain and Tennille, Journey, Elton John, Billy Joel, Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, Olivia Newton-John, Donna Summer, and Peter Frampton. She grew up listening to James Taylor with her dad, so it holds a special place in her heart. She gets Hyde to like James Taylor and Elton John, and Hyde gets her to like Zeppelin. She gets Donna to like Blondie, to some extent, and Heart and Pat Benatar is Jackie's angry music.

In the 80s, she loves Madonna, The Go Gos, Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper, Paula Abdul, a sea of one/two hit wonders, etc. She loves Dirty Dancing and the song "(I've Had) The Time of My Life." In the 90s, she's a huge fan of Mariah Carey. Since the mainstream music for most of the 90s was either rock/alternative, R&B, or stupid Fez-ish gimmicky songs, Mariah Carey's music becomes an obsession for her. Her obsession calms down a bit with the bubblegum pop revival in the late 90s/early 00s, and she loves Britney Spears, The Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, J-Lo, Christina Aguilera…the list is endless. And today, she'd love Adele and Ariana Grande, and uses them as an example for good music when Hyde complains about mainstream music today. Well, and she'd love Taylor Swift too (minus some of the early country stuff), but for Hyde, Taylor Swift doesn't count as good music. And for Hyde, Ariana just has a good voice. That's it.

Kelso: He likes The Doors, The Police, Pink Floyd, and David Bowie. For Kelso, he never grows out of the most obnoxious rock bands the gang listened to as teens. KISS, AC/DC (to be fair, Hyde doesn't, either), Alice Cooper, Molly Hatchet, Foghat, etc. He loves 80s hair metal, like Twisted Sister, The Scorpions, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Poison, etc. In the 90s, he loves Smash Mouth and the Barenaked Ladies. He can recite "One Week" and "It's The End of the World" by REM by heart. The Talking Heads and the B-52s are also a guilty pleasure of his (especially "Love Shack"), and "Mr. Roboto" by Styx. He also has a soft spot for Boston and The Cars (he listens to "My Best Friend's Girl" on repeat when Jackie first gets with Hyde).

The 10 Most Influential Debut Records of the Rock Era

It's been, oh, at least three days since I posted a list, so I thought it was time for another one. (I have a list-making gene - which, unfortunately, takes up far too much of my time. But if I don't make the list and post it, I begin showing signs of emotional stress because my brain becomes overloaded with pointless minutiae, and I need to empty it - much like the trash on a computer. Otherwise, my brain begins to operate more slowly, and I'm unable to download my thoughts into words and deeds. The little wheel in my eyeball just goes round and round. My head begins to smoke, and my wife has to unplug me, and call tech support.)

In any case, this is a list I don't actually recall ever seeing anywhere else. I was thinking about how important it is for any musical act to make a great debut record, and if you manage to accomplish that, how incredible that record must be to actually influence or change the direction of popular music your first time out. It would be far more difficult than, say, hitting a grand slam walk-off home run in your first major league at-bat.

When I began compiling the list, I was thinking first about the most influential records ever made, but not many of them were debut records. There are countless lists of influential albums out there, and many more lists of best debut records. But both at once? So, I compiled a list that I think is pretty impressive dating back 60 years - although this list ends with 1980. By then, I think most, if not all popular music's worthwhile changes and growth had happened or had been set in motion, and from that point forward, regression set in. We've reached a point now where there's nothing new under the sun, and we are devolving our way to some landfill in New Jersey keeping company with six-pack plastic rings, and styrofoam cups.

The list is in roughly chronological order, and I'll add a few comments after each in an effort to defend my choices.

Meet The Beatles - The Beatles (1964) Not technically their debut, you scream? Well, I don't live in the UK. This was the US debut record, and I would argue that if The Beatles had never made it in America, they would've come and gone like last week's latest Rap sensation. This is ground zero, and I'll accept no substitutes.

Freak Out - The Mothers of Invention (1966) Even today, it's hard to wrap your head around the fact that a record like this existed in 1966. It opened up the whole world of record making to the avant-garde, and a whole new audience. No restrictions. No rules. From that day forward - bring it!

The Velvet Underground and Nico (1967) Do I really need to argue The Velvets influence at this point to anyone?

Music From Big Pink - The Band (1968) Eric Clapton left Cream because of a Rolling Stone review, and this album. Back to basics. You could argue it was the first "Americana" album long before they had a name for it.

Santana (1969) America and most of the world had not heard anything before like this marriage of Rock, Jazz, and Latin music, and it was there as if it was the most natural thing in the world - and maybe it was.

In The Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson (1969) The invention of Progressive Rock, and the influence of Folk, and Classical on the sound of Rock thereafter.

Black Sabbath (1970) The invention of Heavy Metal, and the importance of riffing, and a noise like laying down on a railroad track with a train bearing down on your exploding head.

Horses - Patti Smith (1975) Poetry fused with Rock 'N' Roll wrapped in a feminist sensibility, and an attitude that if you aren't saying something important, why speak at all?

Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols (1977) Some would argue The Ramones debut mattered more, but their debut was largely ignored except by critics, and the NY club crowd. It was The Pistols that fired the Punk shot heard 'round the world. Rock's last gasp, and then there was.....

The Sugarhill Gang (1980) The single, Rapper's Delight was released in the late summer of '79. If they had not followed up with a full-length album, it might've been viewed as a novelty hit. Instead it was the birth of Rap which would eventually overwhelm Rock as the most popular music of the day.

Wilco Kick Off the Weekend and a Three-Night Run at the Beacon Theatre on Friday

Wilco – Beacon Theatre – June 21, 2024

Like many a Wilco fan, I look back to 2004’s A Ghost Is Born with certain fondness, not least because it was an inflection-point epoch. Before touring the Ghost material — which is to say, before Wilco rounded out the band lineup we would come to know over the two decades since with guitar sorcerer Nels Cline and multi-instrumentalist wonder Pat Sansone — Wilco had only just begun to push at the artier, more experimental edges of their invigorating, countrified indie-rock, hinting at what might come next. 

After that, Jeff Tweedy and Co. were totally indulging those edges: Ghost inaugurated an era of Wilco songs and shows that could be tightly compact or sprawling and annihilating and psychedelic, and today usually are all of those things, where even the quietest and most delicate tunes have simmering noise-rock rage just beneath them and are better for it. Wilco can be so sweetly on. They can go so wildly off. It’s all good. And as the size of their playable oeuvre has doubled since — including a prolific run of new material since the pandemic — they’ve refined what they do even further. They wear their “great modern rock” bona fides well. 

Wilco shows have a way of feeling casually epic. At the Beacon on Friday — the first of three for the band, back in the broiling city — they started out confident and workmanlike and then, gradually, both relaxed the vibe and upped the intensity. Tweedy was his usual affable, lightly sardonic self, steering them through a well-blended run of classics from all eras (“Handshake Drugs,” “Passenger Side,” “I’m the Man Who Loves You”), more recent tunes and obscurities. 

There was some deference to Ghost material — among the standouts, the sensational, Beatles-like “Hummingbird” just never gets old, and the crowd felt it deeply — but there was at least as much from 2022’s Cruel Country and 2023’s Cousin, the pandemic Wilco albums whose songs yield some of their most interesting experiments yet. “Falling Apart (Right Now),” from the former, is an actual, chicken-pickin’ country song, but one that isn’t so much a throwback to Wilco’s early, pre-millennium alt-country days as it is what the band might sound like if they took this version of the band back to that aesthetic. And yet, “Bird Without a Tail/Base of My Skull,” from that same album, has very little country at all: a woozy, jangling build that on record ebbs into rustic psychedelia but here, live, opened up, became a sonic voyage, the band all in protracted instrumental jamming at once.

When they go for it, they really go for it. Long masters of setlist construction, Wilco built on a strong first hour and then cranked up things, using the last third of the show on a run through some of their richest material: “Heavy Metal Drummer,” “The Late Greats,” the deceptively delicate, right-in-the-feels “Jesus Etc.,” the much-beloved hymn “California Stars,” the shoegaze-hypnotic choogle of “Spiders (Kidsmoke)” at the close of a four-song encore. And every time you think you’ve previously heard the best of Cline laying waste to “Impossible Germany” — a pensive tune that in fact houses a seven-plus-minute, no-holds-barred guitar excursion — it ends up feeling like the first time, with Friday’s showstopper a wiry adventure of maybe-this-feels-like-Eddie Hazel-meets-David-Gilmour-but-no-it’s-actually-just-Nels-doing-Nels-and-holy-shit.

Wilco’s individual players get plenty of love: Tweedy, Cline, Sansone, the might-be-MVP Glenn Kotche on drums, the stalwart John Stirratt on bass, the never-not-on-point Mikael Jorgensen on keys. Less talked about, and ever more apparent as they age, is how well over 20 years they’ve jelled as an ensemble and move as one organism over songs for whom this many players and this much musicality might be too much in an arena, let alone a theater. That they’ve also kept all this from becoming mechanical — that every Wilco show still feels fresh and unforced — suggests there are many more Wilco epochs yet to come. —Chad Berndtson | @Cberndtson

LIVE REVIEW: Liam Gallagher @ Manchester, Co-Op Live Arena

Ably supported by Villanelle and Cast, Liam Gallagher took to the stage once again at the Co-op Live in Manchester to celebrate 30 years of the iconic Oasis album 'Definitely Maybe'.

As Cast exited the stage following a crowd-rousing performance, a countdown timer in the form of a digital flip-clock began on the two huge screens hung proudly above the stage. Starting at 2024, the anticipation built as the digits moved down a year in time for each minute that passed, transporting the eager crowd back to the album release year of 1994, before Gallagher swaggered on stage, bang on cue.

Beneath the clock, the set itself was a visual aid to send the audience back those thirty years. The set was composed of nods to the Definitely Maybe album cover: two flamingos stood proudly to the left of the stage and a CRT TV on the right flitted between static and retro clips. Burt Bacharach's face was displayed on the organ, a large globe hung between the screens, and four palm trees reached "..up in the sky".

The newly opened Co-op Live arena was packed to the brim - no seat was left empty, and no floor space could be seen from the upper echelons of the imposing building: twenty-three and a half thousand fans crammed into one space waiting to collectively share the experience. As Cast declared before exiting the stage, the crowd were certainly "...in for a treat"; despite facing frequent criticism for his waning vocal abilities, Gallagher performed exceptionally throughout the entire concert.

The 100-minute set opened raucously with Rock 'N' Roll Star; the crowd were 'sold' immediately, with every voice singing along passionately. The entire audience was on its feet within seconds despite a large proportion having dedicated seats, making for a telling start to a clearly well-enjoyed performance by Gallagher's willing congregation.

Following speculation that Oasis would reunite for the tour (though this did not occur), Half The World Away, accompanied by strings and backing vocalists, was dedicated to Liam's "little brother" (referring to older sibling and former band member, Noel). Though the performance of this song was much slower and softer than most of the others played, it had a remarkably hypnotic effect on the audience in matched likeness to the more upbeat tracks; they dutifully sang along, just as impassioned as they were for the rest of the set.

Cigarettes and Alcohol was unquestionably the most atmospheric track of the evening - the hordes screamed along and an almost hedonistic phase of madness ensued. The crowd was wildly enthusiastic, throwing unknown fluid into the air from their paper cups and nonchalantly blowing smoke, to create fog and rain-clouds that diffused throughout the arena.

Infused with the excitement of the Euros and the ongoing England match, the crowd broke out into a cheerful chant of "It's coming home! It's coming home! It's coming - football's coming home", in the short break before the encore. When Gallagher inevitably returned to the stage, he sang a powerful rendition of Supersonic - by this point, the gathered masses were putty in his hands. He followed this with Slide Away and Live Forever, which were both well received by the crowd, before drawing the twenty song set to a close with The Beatles' classic, I am The Walrus.

An epic celebration of 30 years of 'Definitely Maybe' that undoubtedly left those present 'feeling Supersonic', this was a nostalgic performance that will be branded into the minds of those who were there for many years to come.
