the fact that shakespeare was a playwright is sometimes so funny to me. just the concept of the "greatest writer of the English language" being a random 450-year-old entertainer, a 16th cent pop cultural sensation (thanks in large part to puns & dirty jokes & verbiage & a long-running appeal to commoners). and his work was made to be watched not read, but in the classroom teachers just hand us his scripts and say "that's literature"
just...imagine it's 2450 A.D. and English Lit students are regularly going into 100k debt writing postdoc theses on The Simpsons screenplays. the original animation hasn't even been preserved, it's literally just scripts and the occasional SDH subtitles.txt. they've been republished more times than the Bible
#due to the Great Data Decay academics write viciously argumentative articles on which episodes aired in what order#at conferences professors have known to engage in physically violent altercations whilst debating the air date number of household viewers#90% of the couch gags have been lost and there is a billion dollar trade in counterfeit “lost copies”#serious note: i'll be honest i always assumed it was english imperialism that made shakespeare so inescapable in the 19th/20th cent#like his writing should have become obscure at the same level of his contemporaries#but british imperialists needed an ENGLISH LANGUAGE (and BRITISH) writer to venerate#and shakespeare wrote so many damn things that there was a humongous body of work just sitting there waiting to be culturally exploited...#i know it didn't happen like this but i imagine a English Parliament House Committee Member For The Education Of The Masses or something#cartoonishly stumbling over a dusty cobwebbed crate labelled the Complete Works of Shakespeare#and going 'Eureka! this shall make excellent propoganda for fabricating a national identity in a time of great social unrest.#it will be a cornerstone of our elitist educational institutions for centuries to come! long live our decaying empire!'#'what good fortune that this used to be accessible and entertaining to mainstream illiterate audience members...#..but now we can strip that away and make it a difficult & alienating foundation of a Classical Education! just like the latin language :)'#anyway maybe there's no such thing as the 'greatest writer of x language' in ANY language?#maybe there are just different styles and yes levels of expertise and skill but also a high degree of subjectivity#and variance in the way that we as individuals and members of different cultures/time periods experience any work of media#and that's okay! and should be acknowledged!!! and allow us to give ourselves permission to broaden our horizons#and explore the stories of marginalized/underappreciated creators#instead of worshiping the List of Top 10 Best (aka Most Famous) Whatevers Of All Time/A Certain Time Period#anyways things are famous for a reason and that reason has little to do with innate “value”#and much more to do with how it plays into the interests of powerful institutions motivated to influence our shared cultural narratives#so i'm not saying 'stop teaching shakespeare'. but like...maybe classrooms should stop using it as busy work that (by accident or designs)#happens to alienate a large number of students who could otherwise be engaging critically with works that feel more relevant to their world#(by merit of not being 4 centuries old or lacking necessary historical context or requiring untaught translation skills)#and yeah...MAYBE our educational institutions could spend less time/money on shakespeare critical analysis and more on...#...any of thousands of underfunded areas of literary research i literally (pun!) don't know where to begin#oh and p.s. the modern publishing world is in shambles and it would be neat if schoolwork could include modern works?#beautiful complicated socially relevant works of literature are published every year. it's not just the 'classics' that have value#and actually modern publications are probably an easier way for students to learn the basics. since lesson plans don't have to include the#important historical/cultural context many teens need for 20+ year old media (which is older than their entire lived experience fyi)

I'm not explaining why re-imagining characters as POC is not the same as white-washing, here of all places should fucking understand.
#personal#delete later#no patrick. “black washing” is not as harmful as white washing.#come on guys get it together#seeing people in my reblogs talk about “reverse racism” and double standards is genuinely hypocrisy#say it with me: white washing is intrinsically tied to a historical and systematic erasure of poc figures literature and history.#it is an inherently destructive act that deplatforms underrepresented faces and voices#in favor of a light-skinned aesthetic hegemony#redesigning characters as poc is an act of dismantling symbols of whiteness in fiction in favor of diversification and reclamation#(note that i am talking about individual acts by individual artists as was the topic of this discourse. not on an industry-scale)#redesigning characters as poc is not tied to hundreds of years of systemic racism and abuse and power dynamics. that is a fact.#you are not replacing an underrepresented person with an oft-represented person. it is the opposite#if you feel threatened or upset or uncomfortable about this then sorry but you are not aware of how much more worse it is for poc#if representation is unequal then these acts cannot be equivalent. you can't point to an imbalanced scale and say they weigh the same#if you recognize that bipoc people are minorities then you should recognize that these two things are not the same#while i agree that “black washing” can lead to color-blind casting and writing the behavior here is on an individual level#a black artist drawing their favorite anime character as black because they feel a shared solidarity is not a threat to you#i mean. most anime characters are east asian and i as an east asian person certainly don't feel threatened or erased. neither should you.#there's much to be said about the politics of blackwashing (i don't even know if that's the right word for it)#but point standing. whitewashing is an inherently more destructive act. both through its history of maintaining power dynamics#and the simple fact that it's taking away from groups of people who have less to begin with#if you feel upset or uncomfortable about a fictional white character being redesigned as poc by an artist on twitter#i sincerely hope you're able to explore these feelings and find avenues to empathizing with poc who have had their figures#(both real and fictional) erased; buried; and replaced by white figures for hundreds of years#i sincerely hope you can understand the difference in motivations and connotations behind whitewashing and blackwashing#classic bixels “i'm not talking about this chat. i'm not” (puts my media studies major to use in the tags and talks the fuck outta it)

i think gamers dismissed the notion of keeping score in non-arcadey titles too easily i think. some games are a lot funner if you try to play them with score in mind
#like how do you get a high score in the classic sonic games?#get a lot of rings. keep them to the end of the level. and beat it fast as fuck for a good time bonus#that's a fun way to play the game!!!!#honestly the special stages in sonic 1 feel like they play into encouraging that too#keep enough rings and you get to play a little bonus stage at the end of the level. to get a little doodad#that only really serves to increase your score#and also give you a nicer ending cutscene#sonic 2 giving you an opportunity to play the bonus stages at every checkpoint is nice in theory#gives you more chances to do it per level#still rewards you for keeping your rings#but then after you leave the special stage all your rings are gone D:#and also it's much more of a pace breaker to do it in the middle of a level rather than inbetween...#still i understand it in theory#then sonic 3 made it so you don't *have* to keep your rings. you just have to find a giant ring#which makes sense for that game's more exploration focused level design and play style#y'know since it introduced knuckles and everything#lot to think about game design-wise :>

the parallel between Lestat marking all the tenor's flat notes and Armand writing all his aggressive director notes for Claudia on the 500th performance... the performing community of Paris better thank their lucky stars everyday that lesmand didn't become a real couple because there would be no survivors
#they would have all killed themselves within a month..fucking in the box is honestly the kindest thing those bitches could do#modern/human au lesmand run the local youth theatre like the fucking navy#but whenever the moms are around they turn up the cute sassy gay couple charm#so no one even cares/notices that they are giving children permanent psyche issues#on another level though it would probably never work bc Lestat's basic ass would just want to do Shakespeare and classic musicals#while Armand would try to put on NYC black box plays about geopolitical conflicts#iwtv#m.text

The World Ends With You is a veritable goldmine for out-of-context screenshots
#the world ends with you#twewy#out of context quotes#super fun game#can totally see why it became a cult classic#however I'm playing on emulator and the unresponsive controls are both giving me a massive headache and making my fingers cramp#also this might be a hot take but tying pin evolution to waiting real-time days to level up on its own is kinda annoying

one of my favorite things about utmv was that several people would get real creative about how a character would blush, and I figured I'd try out the star freckles headcanon on Lunar since they're half-astral :]
#xero creations#and also the classic 'comyet swirl blush' bc its insanely adorable to me on so many levels HAISHDK#also feel free to interpret this as whatever u want LOL#it's simultaneously not any ship but also implied self ship and lumini at the same time#so like. if u wanna tag it as a certain ship that isn't any of those u r also free 2 do that 👍#sun and moon show#the sun and moon show#tsams#lunar and earth show#the lunar and earth show#tlaes#sams lunar#laes lunar#lunar#lumini#gemini/lunar#lunar x gemini#lunar x reader#lunar x y/n

Why should women read books
It is important that everyone works on their cultural formation. Our imagination needs to be educated to better understand life. Literature plays a fundamental role in this training. Romance especially. Do you want to know how important reading good romance novels is for a woman?
The novel combines narrative and drama. Through narrative, someone tells a story. Events are thought about and reported. The drama happens in the relationships between the characters, in how they act. This is the combination also present in our lives.
Our actions reveal aspects of our inner life and vice versa. When we act, we dramatically accomplish what we think. When we try to report actions, we choose (even unconsciously) a point of view, a perspective. Both our actions and the way we report them take shape over a period of time.
The structure of the novel is close to everyday life. By knowing the characters’ thoughts and actions, we can evaluate their successes, limitations, possibilities and weaknesses. We can see how identities are cultivated or destroyed by ordered or disordered desires and actions. Novels allow us to see our own lives as narrative.
Women are more attentive to everyday details. We are more attentive to what, day after day, builds the family's history. Part of its vocation is differentiating the essential from the accessory. The genre of romance echoes in the female heart.
Each narrative attempts to reveal aspects of eternity embodied in time. A good novel manages to capture the human being’s desire for permanence. The manifestation of this longing is shown in everyday life. In cultivating the home, a woman struggles to preserve what is permanent amidst the transitory.
For women, the identification of romance with the structure of life is immediate. When reading a good novel, she recognizes the latent possibilities in her own life. It is in the course of ordinary days that great things are created.
Good romance helps a woman organize her affection. The characters' mistakes and successes are monitored. The lesson, positive or negative, of a novel is within the story. The woman's contemplative spirit realizes that her development, and that of those she loves, also happen within a story.
Reading good novels allows women to narrate their own lives. Your imagination will be prepared by cultivating Hope. She will be able to imaginatively anticipate the person she wants to become.
The popularity of the novel literary genre, especially from the 19th century onwards, was largely due to the large number of female readers who subscribed to magazines and participated in correspondence reading clubs. Women writers were not neglected, but read with pleasure.
It is no coincidence that women have identified so much with the novelistic literary genre. The objective of this genre is to tell everyday stories, episodes of human life that happen to the characters over a certain period of time. This objective reverberates directly in the feminine heart, contemplative and called to cultivation, that is, called to care for those who develop over time.
The aim of romance can be successful or unsuccessful. It will be successful when, through the pleasure of reading, we are transported back to our own lives. It will be unsuccessful when, in a sentimental romance, for example, our heart is drawn into emotional disorder. Hence the importance of reading good novels, and not just any works in this popular genre. We need to know how to choose what will truly form us. Helping with this choice is one of my goals since I created this blog .
