Stargirl Au: Blackbird

basically a stargirl non powers au, but there’s also a war as in there will be a war, but the fics won’t lead to one. Time period is mum (Originally was supposed to be a one shot but oh well.) Like my landslides au this is the timeline of how things happened. 

Sylvester and Pat met in Blue Valley College. Yes their other college friends were the JSA members

they met the 7 soldiers of victory because Pat and Sylvester got drunk once and ended up in the neighboring college.

The rival college was also home to the Isa

Anyways Sylvester and Pat would later adopt Mike. And yes family diners were interesting with Sylvester’s chaotic sister Merry her and her negative husband Henry. Baby Henry’s fine though, he usually likes playing with Mike. 

When Henry was six his father died so it was just him and Merry

When Mike was three Sylvester died leading to the regrouping of the Jsa for his funeral. (none of the JSA died, except for Hourman, they just moved out of Blue Valley)

Speaking of Hourman, Rex and Mary Tyler died in a car crash. No foul play it just happen to snow and icy roads + big trees = no bueno. 

There were two guardians for Rick to go to: Either Justin, Rex’s brother or Matt, Mary’s brother could take care of Rick. Justin lost though because he had mental health disorders. (I googled delusional disorder one believes delusions are real so he probably has that one) so Mat took Rick in when he was 8. 

They were going to move to California, but Pat convinced them that that was a stupid idea... Who knows if that was a smart idea

Anyways so the Dugans and the Tylers drift apart mainly because of Matt, but Pat does try to keep an eye on Rick when he can

Pat also keeps an eye on Justin

The Dugans stay close to the King’s (I’m not aware of Merry’s last name so if someone wants to help a fellow out) so Henry and Mike grow up together as cousins. Henry, because he was raised by his mom and has Pat for an uncle, never grows up to be a dick. He’s more chaotic good

Since he isn’t a dick and didn’t ask for nudes and never dated Yolanda

Meanwhile Courtney moves to Blue Valley to take care of her ailing grandmother when she’s 12. She first befriends Beth, then meets Henry because his uncle could/will be her stepfather. Through Henry she meets Yolanda and Cindy. In high school she meets the mayor’s son, Cameron. 

So for Cameron yes his mom did die, but Jordon just decided to go into politics instead of world domination. 

Also Cindy! So first and foremost. Dr. Ito is a dick and should not be allowed near children nevermind raising one. He is a failed chemist, who know sells things on the dark web... or something. He is an absentee father, who let Cindy do all kinds of things a child shouldn’t do, like play with knives and chemicals. Cindy does befriend Yolanda at a young age though and through Yolanda ‘befriends’ Henry whose good vibes prevent her from being idk a murderer? Anyways she’s a little blunt and straightforward, but probably wouldn’t murder anyone

Nothing changes with the Crooks, their backstory is normal enough for it to fit in the nonpower au. Just they don’t murder the coaches. 

Instead of Henry sharing her nudes, Yolanda, in the start(ish) of high school starts to realize the way she thinks about girls isn’t platonic. She’s with Courtney and they accidentally kisses her, and her entire uber religious family sees. 

Needless to say they weren’t peachy about this and basically exile her from the family. Courtney is very apologetic about the whole thing. When Pat catches wind of this, he talks to Yolanda about it and is like look it’s not you it’s your parents.

(It was supposed to be Cindy, but I really liked @cindyburman‘s comp het headcannon for Cindy so I switched it to Courtney)

Also not immediately after, but like Courtney and Cameron do date for like a hot minute before something happens. 

Don’t worry I haven’t forgotten about Rick, Stargirl just has a lot of characters. So Rick basically outcasted himself, and he doesn’t rejoin society until he meets Beth, in high school. She basically continuously talks to him until he joins their little friend group.

When they realize he’s being abused, physically, Pat finally breaks and adopts/obtains guardianship of him when Rick’s about 16.

The group befriends Artemis mainly through Henry. It’s easier to write a fic about it, but the abbreviated version is Artemis befriended Henry to meet Cindy. (It was an adventure because Cindy thought she was straight and everyone else knows she not)

Cameron who is gay realized he was gay after going to Joey Zarick’s magic show and thinking it was cute unlike his friends. He is 16.

Also in college Beth and Artemis go on a magical adventure and they end up with an owl, hootie. 

Courtney and Yolanda start dating when they are 20 

Beth and Rick start dating about when they are 19 

Cindy also manages to become finacially independent when she becomes a legal adult. She and Artemis start dating when they’re 17

Cindy also becomes a fashion designer. yes artemis and cindy are the football player x cheerleader troupe 

I mentioned a war right well here it is:

The war starts when Rick & Beth 21, Courtney, Cameron, Joey, Artemis Henry & Yolanda-20, Cindy-22, & Mike is 17. 

It becomes a rule that you can’t volunteer for the army soldier or medic etc. until you’re 21. you also can’t be deployed until 25,

Rick can’t serve because he was Malnourished by Mat. Artemis, Cindy, Cameron and Joey are distasteful about the whole thing, although Cameron might be deployed. (It’s either him or Joey, I’m not sure quite yet) Courtney suffered an injury junior year preventing her from enlisting. Yolanda enlists to be able to go to college. (strict parenting doesn’t always end well kids) and Beth became a doc for the army. Her and Yolanda ended up in the same platoon along with some other arrowverse characters.

closeted lesbian artemis likes hanging out w the guys way more than girls bc girls are just so pretty?? & she gets overwhelmed & feels so much pressure & she can’t talk to her parents about it bc they’ll be like have you TRIED doing one handed pull ups? unhelpful, muted. guys she can just beat up, but girls, that seem so soft & fragile & all her exercise to be the strongest makes her scared they’ll break if she touches one & on GOD does she want to touch one. a girl told her she was pretty once & she couldn’t catch a ball at practice all week. a boy is being mean to her? she has no problem breaking his nose. but if a GIRL even looks her way & then seems uninterested? absolutely devastated, THROWS herself into working out for the rest of the week. & fuck me if cindy burman being on cheerleading team does NOT help. like, cindy is so fucking good she doesn’t even have to practice that hard & trust me artemis has been watching her do enough flips in her short skirt to tell. & cindy is so bored w her team that when she’s over completely dragging them w her dominating mouth she turns her attention to practices or games, specifically whenever it’s artemis out there and that does NOT help. like she REALLY wants to impress her & maybe be praised? she’s seen her make out w henry & she gets soooo frustrated the player she is matched up against always gets absolutely wrecked. cindy talks SO much, which she likes. it’s great bc when it comes to girls she does not want to talk at ALL or risk stuttering or saying something stupid & cindy is just so crazy smart like way out of her league god she’s so hot and smart & when she says mean things to other girls sometimes she wishes it was her at the end of the tongue lashing?

fast forward to artemis being last one to leave after practice bc she works harder than everyone else and wanted to get a few more reps in. & it’s easier this way bc all the other girls left so she gets the whole locker room to herself. she gets in the showers and it’s steamy and she’s watching her hair so she can’t see much but she hears cindy next to her saying i forgot my shampoo in my locker do my mind if i borrow yours? AND CINDY FUCKING BURMAN LEANS RIGHT IN TO BORROW THAT SHIT & THAT’S WHEN ARTEMIS CAN FINALLY SEE.

However, this year, they have a new Gym teacher. Coach Joe.

He always smells like sweat and he sometimes spits when he talks. 

Artemis is not going to let that stop her from being the best of all his classes. 

Mom and Dad said Gym class was good training not only for high school, but for life.

Now, standing beside Brian as they pick teams for dodgeball, Artemis knows this to be true.

They’ve been picking for 2 minutes and finally, it is down to the last two.

Rick Harris and Beth Chapel.

It’s Artemis’ turn to pick.

Rick looks like he could not care less about anything that is going on. Beth...Beth is looking at her with that smile that she gives people when they exclude her. 

Not that Artemis cares. 

“Chapel.” She said at last. 

Beth’s eyes light up and she walks to Artemis’ side. 

Brian motions for Rick to come to his side. 

“Chapel, you lose this game for us, I will never forgive you.” Artemis muttered to the other girl, who simply laughs.

“Just a game.” She said.

Before Artemis could explain how it is so not just a game, Coach Joe blows the whistle. 

It is down to two people.

Artemis and Beth. 

There are four people on the other team.

Beth has been only dodging balls and Artemis has been throwing them. 

Brian throws a ball that looks to be on course to Beth’s face when she shrieked and hit the ball to the side.

Directly where Artemis was standing.

The ball hit her in the nose. 

“Oh my gosh. I am so sorry Artemis.” Beth is saying but it does not matter.

It doesn’t matter because Coach Joe is blowing the whistle, signaling the other team’s victory.

“Why’d you do that, Chapel?”

“It was an accident, I swear. I didn’t mean for it to hit you--”

“I don’t care about that. You made us lose the game. That’s what’s important.”

Coach Joe came up to them before Beth could respond.

“Chapel, take Crock to the nurse.”

“I can go by myself.” Artemis hissed.

“Not if you have a head injury.”

He walked away to talk to the other students. Beth led her away.

“I don’t need the nurse.”

“You might have a head injury.”

“Yeah, thanks to you.”

“I really am sorry.”

“Sorry you lost us the game?”

“Sorry you got hurt. That’s more important. You know that, right?”

Artemis glares as they walk into the halls. “Whatever, Chapel. It’s fine. Not the end of the world.”

Beth nodded and continued walking. 

“I knew we were gonna lose anyway.” Artemis said because she had nothing else to say.

Beth frowned. “Then why did you choose me?”

“What?”

“Artemis, I’m not stupid.”

“I know.” Then she winced. “You don’t exactly hide it.” She added. 

“Exactly. So, I know between Rick and I, he has more of a chance of winning. Yet, you chose me. If you wanted to win, why’d you choose me?”

Artemis didn’t stop walking. She was staring ahead, trying to come up with a reason other than I didn’t want to be the reason you had that fake smile. 

“Maybe I didn’t want to deal with Rick Harris.” She declared as she walked faster.

Beth paused then ran to keep up. “That’s not very nice.”

“I didn’t say anything against you.”

“No, but you did say something against Rick. I don’t want to be praised at someone else’s insult.”

Artemis stopped and groaned loudly. “Are you ever...not nice.”

“Only when I need to be.” Beth answered. 

Artemis snorted. 

“Come on. We’re here.” Beth led her in and said hello to the nurse, who looked happy to see Beth.

Nurse Jackie then checked Artemis and told Beth the other girl can return to class. 

“Got it.” Beth said, then turned to Artemis. “I’m sorry about the game, but I hope you feel better.”

“I thought you said it was not important.”

Beth shrugged. “It’s important to you.” With that, she left.

Artemis is looking at Cindy like she grew two heads.

“You don’t believe me. I have proof.” Cindy declared, offering a folder.

“Proof Whitmore and...others put my parents in prison?”

“Yup.”

Artemis took the folder and found the evidence--of the crimes that were done before she was born--that was messed with. 

“Who?”

“Like I said, the JSA.”

“I mean, who did the hacking?”

“Well, I imagine it was the new Dr. Mid-Nite, or as you know her: Beth Chapel. 

Artemis’ head snapped away from the folder to Cindy, who is wearing the same smirk as always.

“Beth put my parents in prison?’

“Yup.”

Artemis looked down again. Beth can be mean when she needs to be, Artemis didn’t know she meant this.

“You can get justice. She’s at American Dream right now.” Cindy whispered in her ear.

Artemis put down the folder and grabbed some of her dad’s old equipment.

Time to play a new game, Chapel. 

Artemis will learn that night that nobody is a winner.

Okay, since you’ve probably finished Stargirl Season 2, I had to ask you two things:

Did you prefer S1 or S2?

And what are your hopes/theories for S3? Because with the way S2 ended, it kind of gave me serious Once Upon A Time vibes in a way (a small town with heroes and villains living side by side in supposed harmony)!

I have indeed! And...hmm, it's hard to pick a favorite, but honestly, I think S2. Like you said: OUAT vibes with heroes and villains living side-by-side in supposed harmony, everyone's together in the same place, and this season was jam-packed with so many great things: Yolanda's PTSD (could've been wrapped up a little better in the finale, but that's a minor criticism), Cindy's whole arc with Eclipso and aiding the JSA and wanting to join them, Artemis being more of a prominent character this season, Jennie as a character, Jakeem (who I agree is a great foil to Mike)...AHHHH

Hmm...theories for S3...well, idk about the villains, but as for character predictions: Pat adopts Rick, Rick and Beth start dating, Jesse Chambers starts school as a new/transfer student (or is a background student who becomes a main, like Artemis this season, and maybe she's an entirely new version of the Jesse we knew and loved, or maybe she's literally just Jesse Wells reborn), Cindy spends the whole season establishing her place in the JSA and slipping up a few times but eventually earns their trust as a full member, the first Wildcat is still alive (or they find a recording or something...this is more of a hope than a prediction, because Yolanda deserves that passing-the-torch moment), Sylvester and Pat clash a lot over how to train Courtney, the S3 plot (and the main villain, whoever tf that is) will probably center heavily around Jennie's brother and finding him, Cameron will revive the ISA and become the new Icicle (paralleling Courtney, and Cindy's JSA arc will probably involve defeating him), Artemis will struggle with the JSA's kindness and figuring out who she wants to be (her parents will likely want her to join the JSA now that the ISA is toast and they do like those kids)

I think for s2, they should REALLY dial up the mirror/foil-ness of Cindy and Courtney. I think they will, by having her recruit the villain's kids/recruit non-legacies. But I would also love if -

Yes, Courtney and Cindy would be a great ship (post-redemption). But... Cindy and Artemis? That would be pretty cool. Especially if it's paralleled with Courtney and Yolanda.

Basically what I'm saying is the date night battle scenario between the four (Courtney v. Cindy, Yolanda v. Artemis) would be insanely cool and filled with concerned gfs (on the hero side) and proud gfs (on the villains side) shouting things out between punches

“What did I miss?”

Rick walks into the Pit Stop from the side door, tossing his beat up school bag on a nearby stool. Nobody is here anymore. Courtney ditched, again, for Cameron presumably. Yolanda, pissed off, stalked away to go home and Sylvester and Mr. Dugan were out…somewhere.

“Nothing much.” The file of notes she’s compiled of their investigation is barely enough to warrant its own folder. She clicks x on the top of the webpage encrypted with a password and Beth glances up from her laptop. Her bright smile wobbles into a laugh. Rick has streaks of dirt all over his face. “How did the burial go?” 

Rick lets out a confused chuckle of his own, sitting in the chair next to her. Their knees brushed. “How’d you know I…?” 

Beth points at his face. 

“Oh.” 

She goes to fetch a wet paper towel from the sink area where Pat fixes up after work. She wipes the brown grime from his cheek and forehead. There’s a lot of it, and the more she rubs, the more it smears. She asks, “What is your plan, exactly, if you do reanimate Grundy?” 

“Uh...” 

The paper towel presses a little deeper against his skin. “You do have a plan, right?” 

“Yeah…?” That’s a no.  

Beth sighs. “You’ll have to take care of him. He’s…big.” 

“I know that.” He sounds impatient but it’s not in a condescending way. Beth knows Rick gets caught up in the moment. Right now he’s got a one tracked-mind and it is all about bringing Solomon Grundy back to life. He feels guilty that he summoned the monster only for Eclipso to end him. And frustrated that it’s taking so long to revive him. But what Beth worries about is how Rick will handle juggling single parenting a zombie-monster, fixing his hourglass, and figuring out how to scrape through school well enough for a shot at college.  “At this point, I don’t think it even matters.” 

Beth pats his cheek scrubbed pink with her free hand as he grumbles. “You’ll figure it out.” She smiles and brushes away the last spec of dirt with her thumb. “All better.” 

Rick’s gaze softens. He catches her wrist as it pulls away, halting it in the air. “Beth?” 

Her breath hitches at the way Rick’s eyes won’t move from hers. Intense and warm, and so handsome. “Yes?” 

“I need to tell you something.”

Her heart jumps in her chest. She wills herself to calm down. There’s no way of knowing what Rick will say to her. It’s probably not what she thinks. “What is it?”

“I drink.” 

“What?” 

“I drink,” Rick says, and it takes Beth a lengthy moment to understand he is referring to the first time Cindy walked into the Pit Stop. “At least, I used to. It’s been a while, but...” He swallows, his eyes pleading for her to give him a chance. “I needed it sometimes? Just enough to blur the edges off a bad day. So I wasn’t stuck in my head. I thought you knew I sold kegs.” 

“Because you needed money, I thought…” 

“Yeah. But I still drank. And I wouldn’t get as drunk as my uncle but he always had beer at home. Beer is the one thing we always had.” 

“Oh,” Beth replies weakly. Her voice cracks at the pain she feels behind his words. “Why are you telling me this now?” 

“You said we don’t drink to Cindy. I don’t want you to think I’m someone I’m not.” 

“Why not?” 

His leg starts to bounce nervously as his cheeks flush. “I just don’t want you disappointed with me anymore than you already are.”

“You think I’m disappointed with you?”

“I don’t trust Cindy. Or Artemis and her parents. Or the Gambler’s intents before he died. And The Shade’s advice is a load of bull. And every time I have to talk to Mahkent you get this look on your face and I know you want me to try but I can’t turn this switch off inside my chest that’ll magically make me believe all the shit these people do are okay.” 

“I never said that I think what they do is okay. And I believe you about Cameron.” 

He pauses. “You do?” 

Beth nods. “Courtney lied and said she had a headache in the group chat but Chuck pinged her location at the Mahkent estate.” 

He rolls his eyes lightly.

“But I don’t know them as well. Not the way I know you. It’s different.” Beth catches his clean face in her hands. “I understand why you drank.” 

“You do?”

“Rick...” 

He reacts to Beth’s split-second decision kiss with a sharp breath through his nose. His back presses against the edge of the table behind them, right elbow sliding against its smooth surface as Beth is greeted with his other hand snaking its way around her waist. Her own stool rolls forward as he pulls her close. Kissing Rick is not what Beth expected to do when he walked in, but she can’t say she’s never thought of this before. 

“I didn’t know you wanted that,” he replies breathlessly. “Or, I would’ve…” 

Beth arches a playful brow, scooting over until she’s half on his lap. “Spent more time with me this summer instead of shovelling a body into the ground over and over again in the light of the full moon?” 

Rick fixes her an unamused look with no heat. Instead of responding, he leans in again. Beth gazes down at his mouth before her lips are captured in another meltingly slow kiss. Two in one day and dare Beth say it might compete with reading for her favourite pass time. 

“Making out in the Pit Stop? Really?” 

Beth startles as Rick stiffens. His gaze slides to the floor. 

Mr. Dugan walks in, clumsily thumbing at the iPhone Sylvester bought him then shoving it into his pant pocket. “I thought this was supposed to be a JSA meeting.” 

“It was,” Beth says, sheepish. 

“And since when did this start happening?” He flaps a hand between the two teens as though “this” was a living, breathing organism that might jump out at him. 

“Just now?” Rick reluctantly loosens his hold from her waist. Beth climbs out of his lap and returns to her own chair.

Mr. Dugan side-eyes them for a long awkward moment. Beth presses down the nonexistent creases from her jeans as Rick’s kiss replayed in her mind before giving Courtney’s step-dad her best-behaved-JSA-member smile. 

“Alright, well, Sly is headed on over here to take another spin with STRIPE.” 

“We’ll leave.” Rick hauls Beth up with his hand and then doesn’t let go. His hand isn’t soft. Beth doesn’t care. It still sends tingles to her toes. Beth bites the inside of her cheek so that her happy grin won’t explode across her face. “Do you need to be home now?” 

She shakes her head. “Please no. Anywhere but home.” 

Rick cocks a hopeful eyebrow at her. “Richie’s, then?” 

“Mr. Tyler are you asking me out on a date?” 

“Do you want it to be a date?” 

“I think I do.” She turns behind to call out to Mr. Dugan as Rick gives her another light squeeze. “Have fun with Starman!”
