Bad Influence

After your first week at school, a teacher warns you about your friendship with Rick, and you realize just how the people of Blue Valley see him. Takes place early season three.

Notes: There was a request for Rick keeping snacks on hand for a speedster so I've been working that into a few parts of the series :)

"(Y/N), if you could stay for a moment..."

Surprised to hear your name, you stopped in the doorway and looked back at Mr. McFarlane, who was standing near his desk. You turned to Rick and smiled. "See you later."

"Yeah, sure," he said, readjusting his bag where it hung from his shoulder. Rick gave you a nod and continued down the hall to his next class. Usually, you would walk with him since your class was on the way, but apparently Mr. McFarlane had different plans.

You moved further into the room again, playing with the loose end of your backpack strap. After sitting at a desk for 45 minutes, you were itching to at least walk a bit before having to do it again. "So, am I not doing as well in class as I thought?"

"No, no. Your work so far has been excellent." Mr. McFarlane sat on the edge of his desk with a sigh. "Myself and a few other teachers are...concerned about your friendship with Rick Harris."

"It's Tyler, not Harris." Rick had mentioned how he used to go by a different last name before he found out who his dad really was. Some of the teachers hadn't gotten with the program yet, which made you feel bad for him. You were going through something similar—having to go by Swift in public instead of Garrick—but at least you had the name of someone who loved you. While Harris was also Rick's mom's name, his uncle had soured it. "Why is there concern?"

"I know you're new to Blue Valley, but Mr. H–Tyler is not. He has a certain reputation for behavioral issues, and I would hate to see a bright student like yourself get involved with someone who could be a bad influence."

"I–"

"Excuse me?" Since school began, you'd been nothing but respectful to your teachers, just like your father taught you. At that moment, you weren't really feeling it anymore. "You obviously don't know Rick very well at all. He's a good person and a good friend, and I'm not going to stop being friends with him just because the teachers here want to be judgemental towards certain students."

"I need to go or else I'll be late to my next class. We wouldn't want Mrs. Thomas to think I'm being corrupted by a bad influence."

Without waiting for him to say anything else or dismiss you, you simply walked out, bumping right into Cameron Mahkent as he approached the door. You stared at him a moment before giving him a nervous smile. "Sorry."

"Don't worry about it," he said before entering the classroom.

You couldn't help the shiver up your spine knowing that he was Icicle's son. But that didn't do much to stop your annoyance at Mr. McFarlane as you quickly headed down the hallway towards your next class.

"Ugh, I think I'm out of snacks."

You continued to dig through the front pocket of your bag just in case, but you were pretty sure you'd eaten your last package of crackers when you first met Rick at The Pit Stop that evening.

"Here..." Rick opened up his backpack and took out a candy bar, handing it over to you.

"You don't have to give me your food. I can go run and find something."

"It's fine," he said, turning back to his homework. It wasn't like he actually ate that type of candy bar anyway—he was more of a nutty buddy guy—but you didn't need to know that he kept his own stash for you. After all, he'd feel pretty bad if you crashed while hanging out with him.

You smiled at him and opened the wrapper. "Thanks." As you took a bite, you flipped through the assignments in your binder to find the next unfinished one, and you rolled your eyes when you saw the subject at the top. "Mr. McFarlane. What a jerk," you mumbled.

Rick glanced at you as you pulled the packet out and started writing on it. "You never told me what he wanted to talk to you about." You were acting strange the next time he saw you afterward, but you'd avoided saying anything.

"Because it was stupid." And because you thought it would hurt him, but you suspected that it wouldn't be much of a surprise. "Apparently, you have a bad reputation and 'behavioral issues', and our teachers think you'll be a negative influence on me."

Rick put his pen down. He'd seen this coming. Beth and Courtney had both gotten the same talk. A tiny part of him hoped that things could get better with the new school year, but obviously not. "What do you think?" he asked quietly.

"I think it's complete bullshit." Rick had never heard you curse quite like that before, and he realized you must have been even more upset by this than he thought. You turned around in your seat to face him, your knees pressing into his outer thigh.

"You're one of the sweetest people I know. And you're so smart. I mean, you taught yourself chemistry so you could decode your dad's journal! That's not even mentioning how you went to fight Eclipso without your hourglass because you knew your friends needed you. You're a great friend, Rick, and I don't care what anyone else says. You're not a bad influence. The JSA is lucky to have you."

Rick smiled, willing the warmth that rushed to his cheeks to go away. "I think you're the only person that's ever called me sweet, but...thanks."

"Don't get me wrong, Beth is still the number one sweetest." You didn't turn around again, instead leaning back against the arm of the couch. "But you're very close."

He laughed softly as he went back to his work, but you didn't find yourself as motivated anymore. "You know what...." You closed your binder and shoved it into your backpack. "Do you want to take a break and grab something from Richie's? I can run us over there. Then maybe we can do some work on the hourglass."

You had taken him on runs a few times—because all of your teammates really needed to get desensitized to it—so he was mostly used to traveling at high speeds by then. The first couple of tries hadn't been so pleasant.

"Sure," he said, placing his notebook on top of his bag so he could stand.

In a blink of his eye, the two of you were at the corner where the coffee shop mural was, just out of the way enough to not be accidentally seen by anyone. And he was only a bit queasy as a result.

"Feeling okay?" you asked as you let go of him.

He took a deep breath. "Yeah, I'm good."

"Alright, let's go," you urged, crossing the empty street. "I would kill for a banana split right now."

Rick followed you with a little smile and a shake of his head.

Rick Tyler / Hourman x reader

The doubt was slowly eating him up inside, enough to move to his outward motions. His hands clenched, fingers digging painfully into his palm, yet, he could not bring himself to shake the feeling free.

“Y’alright?”

You’re staring at him over the top of a book, attempting to work on some project that he isn’t quite sure of its topic. He sits across from you, eyes glued down to the table below him.

No, no he wasn’t.

Rick knew he had one last fight in him to keep himself from blurting the sentence aloud, and he begged for forgiveness for what your face would surely show if it ended up slipping.

Instead, your book falls lower, a flurry of concern in your expression, dropping the object to the table with a loud thud.

“Rick?”

It’s softer, eyeing for his attention one more time.

He looks up, and it’s hard not to notice the worry and fear that’s welled into his eyes. He’s internally fighting something, you know it.

“I know it goes without saying, but I am here for you. You know that, don’t you?”

Your hand comes across the table, reaching for the one that currently wasn’t tearing his palm to shreds.

“I know.”

It’s the first thing you’ve gotten him to say, and he finally relents, biting his bottom lip as his fingers finally fall free.

“As long as you know.”

You’re squeezing his hand, running your thumb alongside the back of his, softly moving over his knuckles as it slides back and forth.

It’s calming, if only slightly.

His anger has dwindled, he’s sure of that, it no longer consumes him from head to toe anymore.

That self doubt, though…

“So what’s on your mind, Rick?”

His left eye twitches, and he shakes his head, hand pulling free from yours and pushing his chair backwards.

He stands, shoving his hands into his jean pockets, feeling the warmth of your hold disappearing too quickly.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to pry—“

“Why?”

Rick rasps, his shoulders shrugging upwards, then they fall back into place.

“What’s the point, y/n?”

“I don’t understand, Rick, I—“

“You keep putting up with me, and all I do is push you away.”

You stand as well, going to round the table to move next to him, when your outstretched hands fall back to your sides.

“Hey,”

You whisper, taking a hesitant step forwards, praying that he wouldn’t take one backwards.

“It’s not putting up with you, Rick. It’s just being with you, you can try and push me away all you like, I’m not going anywhere.”

You’re trying to convince him, and you can tell it’s not really working, because he just sighs and leans back against the table.

“What can I do?”

“It’s not you.”

He shakes his head, forcibly pushing the thoughts away once he met your gaze.

“I’m sorry, y/n. I’m having trouble with something else, and I’m taking it out on you.”

“That’s alright.”

You shrug, hand finally coming to his arm to run your hand up and down his upper arm, smiling softly at him.

“Talk to me when you’re ready, alright?”

He can’t help the disappointment, watching you pull away and retreat back to the table, picking up your back and continuing your reading.

He will tell you, eventually. Just not now, not before he gets his mindset back into a better state.

Then, he’ll spill his guts.

Rick Tyler:  Hey, Roy!  Jess and I were going through some old photos.

Roy Harper:  For the Infinity Inc. reunion?

Rick: Yeah.

Rick pulls out a newspaper clipping and hands it to Roy.

Roy, reading the clipping: “Villains, Vigilantes Clash at Calgary Conference”.  Nice to be able to look back and laugh at the time you thought you killed a guy.

Rick:  Check out the picture.

Roy looks at the faded picture printed in the article, which features Injustice Unlimited*.

Roy, amused: Holy crap.  People say crooks today are stupid for filming and posting their crimes on Facebook.

Rick: I know.  Wizard just made a guy come over, set up his camera, got everybody to pose and say “cheese”.

Roy, laughs:  Oh, they look great-

Roy looks a bit closer.

Roy: Is The Shade wearing a gimp suit?!

Rick, laughs: With the top hat!

Beat

Rick and Roy erupt with laughter, not noticing a pitch black shape forming behind them.

Roy: Where did he get it, Dr. John’s?

The Shade: It was a Gambi, actually.

Rick and Roy immediately stop laughing as The Shade leans over between them and snatches the clipping.

The Shade, inspecting the picture:  I had it commissioned after Barry took the mantle.  It was the style at the time.  Not one of Paul’s best, but I was pleased.  Looking at it now, it really didn’t leave much to the imagination.  It’s a wonder that we didn’t get any complaints from parents.

Beat

Rick and Roy continue to say nothing as The Shade looks at them both and forms a rather “Joker-esque” smile on his face.

The Shade: And how are you doing today, gentlemen?

You go to New York City after Rick's blow up, and he realizes how badly he screwed up. Takes place during Frenemies Chapter Twelve.

Warnings: Kinda angsty, limiterless Rick is a jerk

Notes: I just always thought Rick should be an asshole to the reader while having his hourglass problem. Because he was kind of being one in canon anyway lmao.

"Has anyone heard from (Y/N)?"

Beth looked at Yolanda and Courtney before turning back to Rick. "No, we haven't been able to get a hold of them at all. I ended up tracking their phone, and they've been in New York City. It looks like they're visiting The Shade. The timing isn't great, but we're hoping they'll show up."

A pit formed in Rick's stomach as Beth spoke. At least you weren't in Blue Valley and unaccounted for, since that could mean you ran into Ultra-Humanite or Icicle, but it still wasn't good news. Because he knew full well that you wouldn't have gone to visit your father without letting the team know. Unless something more had happened.

"They left because of me..."

"Rick? Are you in there? I talked just talked to Beth–"

Rick wrenched his front door open, finding you on the other side, looking at him with worry. You were out of your costume by then, your left forearm covered in a red cast. There was a twinge of anger at the sight of it, but he looked back up at you. "What do you want?"

You flinched at his rough tone, and if he were in his right mind, he would've felt awful. "Beth told me what happened at her house. I wanted to check on you."

Rick chuckled, crossing his arms over his chest. "What, are you here to lecture me?"

"You were completely out of control last night, Rick. You have to have realized that." With the way he was acting at the Mahkent house, you were terrified that he could end up killing someone during the fight, whether it was Cameron or one of his grandparents. You'd never thought he would be capable of that. It simply wasn't him. "Something's very wrong with that hourglass, and we just want to help you."

"We? Because you're my friend too, right?" Rick took a few steps forward until he was right in front of you. "We both know you're just a freak with no friends, who's trying way too hard to be part of a team."

His words hit you right in the chest and knocked the wind out of you. Your mouth opened and closed a few times as you tried to say something, but it was just silence.

"I'm not your boyfriend. What I do is none of your business, and I don't need your help. So leave me the hell alone for once."

"I–" You took a breath, trying to hold back the tears that attempted to escape. The last thing you wanted to do was make this more humiliating. "That thing is going to kill you, Rick."

Before he could say anything else, you were gone.

He'd felt attacked that day, so he lashed out at people who showed him nothing but kindness—you, Beth, her parents. You came to his house out of concern for him, and he said things he knew would cut you to the bone. He already felt disgusted with himself for hitting Courtney, so his behavior after only made it worse.

Yolanda started to say something, but Rick stood up and headed towards the kitchen, pulling his phone out of his pocket. He found your contact, the smile in your picture a contrast to the last time he saw you, and hit call.

It rang and rang, until finally...

"You've reached (Y/N). I'm busy right now, but leave a message, and I'll get back to you in a flash!"

There was a moment where he thought about hanging up, but he stayed on the line. "It's Rick. I'm–" He couldn't just apologize over a voicemail. "...Please call me back when you get this."

Rick hung the phone up and ran his hand back through his hair, hoping he'd hear from you soon.

Robert Smith's voice played over your headphones as you looked out over New York City, all the way from the top of the Empire State Building. After your encounter with Rick, you grabbed your Walkman and your most depressing tapes, then went to meet your father. He'd had his own experience with addiction and getting clean, which meant he could give you advice on how to best help Rick with his hourglass.

And having a little breather from what was happening in Blue Valley didn't hurt.

You'd arrived at Sand Hawkins' brownstone the day before and talked to your father—and even got to meet all the other legacies—but once it was a new day, you wanted some time alone to deal with your hurt feelings. You wanted to cry somewhere that almost no one else could reach. It didn't matter that New York wasn't as beautiful or comforting as Opal, not at that moment.

The wind had you pulling your jacket tighter around your body as you sniffled, wiping tears away with your sleeve. You'd already gathered that Rick didn't return your feelings, but you never imagined he'd say such terrible things. Even though you knew he was basically on drugs and out of his mind, it still hurt. And it hurt more when you realized that he must have figured out that you liked him at some point. Why else would he say some of the things he did?

You had every intention of going back to Blue Valley in a few hours to help with this voyeur situation and get Rick through this mess with the hourglass—if he would even accept that he had a problem—but there was a part of you thinking that after all of that was through, you should just be in New York with the rest of the superpowered 'freaks'. That maybe there was a grain of truth in Rick's words, and you weren't fitting in with the JSA quite as well as you thought.

Sighing, you scraped a fingernail over the rough surface of your cast. Jennie got everyone to sign it after you arrived, despite the fact that you'd only met Todd, Sand, and Grant that very same day. Even your father had written his name in neat cursive. Between the names, you'd scribbled a bunch of little doodles. Random things to fill the space. Your finger landed on the tiny Sonic and Tails near your wrist, and you hated that the sight of it caused a lump in your throat.

How did you ever think you had a chance?

A gentle tap to your shoulder nearly made you jump out of your skin, and you looked up to see your father, fully decked out as The Shade. You moved your headphones to hang around your neck as he offered you a handkerchief from his pocket. Wiping your damp cheeks with it, you gave him a halfhearted frown. "Why did you have to sneak up on me like that?"

"I called your name, my dear. You couldn't hear me over that noise you enjoy so much," he replied, teasing a bit in hopes that you'd smile.

You hugged your knees a bit tighter. "I said I would be back for dinner."

"Yes, and I am perfectly alright with that. But..." Your father produced your phone from the breast pocket of his coat and held it out to you. "...if I hear this thing make another sound today, I'm sending it to the Shadowlands."

Apparently, you'd left your phone at the brownstone. You were surprised you'd even had it on you when you arrived in New York, considering how you would forget it at the house pretty regularly. "It's been ringing that much?"

"Unfortunately, yes."

You unlocked it to be greeted with many notifications, mostly from Beth, Yolanda, and Courtney, and a few from Barbara even. But one caught your eye. A missed call and a voicemail from Rick. You quickly pressed play and held it up to your ear.

"It's Rick. I'm...Please call me back when you get this."

He sounded more like himself and less like the jerk you'd talked to the last time you saw him, which had you even more worried. Had something happened?

You glanced at the barrage of texts from the rest of the team wondering where you were and asking if you were okay. You couldn't help a bit of guilt knowing that you'd worried them by not mentioning your little trip.

The most recent message was from Beth:

Ultra-Humanite and Icicle are in Blue Valley!

"Oh, damnation." You got to your feet and showed your father the screen. "We've got trouble."

Shade's expression morphed into one of disgust as soon as he read those names. He didn't like any of his fellow villains much, but those two were high on the list. "Naturally, something interesting happens in Blue Valley only after I've left. I assume you won't be joining us for dinner?"

"Rain check?" You asked, shoving your phone into your pocket.

"Of course." He gave your shoulder a squeeze. "Good luck, my dear."

"Thanks, Papa."

You quickly hugged him before racing back to Blue Valley, hoping you weren't too late to help.

Hi Love, I’m still trying to figure out how to send the parody all at once because it’s pretty long so bare with me. But I do want to talk about my Stargirl idea, which will be vague as to not spoil the show in case you or anyone reading hasn’t watched it yet and wants to. (as they should!)

(Breakdown of the plot of Stargirl: the shows follows Courtney Whitmore, after moving to a small town when her mom marries her Pat Dugan she finds the Cosmic Staff and is chosen as it’s new wielder. Pat reveals the staff belonged to Sylvester Pemberton aka Starman and Pat was his sidekick know as Stripesy. He is only surviving person from the JSA who were defeated by the ISA years ago. The same night Courtney father was supposed to come and visit her, making he believe Starman is her real father. Courtney believes that the ISA are still out there and need to be stopped despite Pat telling her to leave it alone. She recruits Yolanda as Wildcat, Beth as Dr Mid-Nite, and finds the son of Hourman Rick Tyler. As it turns out the ISA are right under their noses and the new JSA, complete with Pats robot S.T.R.I.P.E they have to take them down.) (Also this show does have a few characters from Young Justice besides Stargirl. Icicle and Icicle Jr though he mainly goes by Cameron who is nothing like the one on YJ. Plus Sportsmaster, Tigress and Artemis are there as well, they are kinda similar but in this one Crusher is a good dad. No Jade tho)

So Blood Binder Readers backstory is the same, the lords of order coming in the night and taking out all but her. But in this universe Kent Nelson knows Reader is there so he rallies the Justice Society of America, the JSA to help him get to Readers dimension and save her. They probably use the Thunderbolt.

Now in this I imagine Reader to be like 4 or 5 at the most and let’s just say she is not okay with this. First there is the slaughter of her family, her people. Now she’s being sucked into a portal and dropped into a room of scary looking people, most have weapons or scary masks so she gets scared. She runs away from them and then encounters Pat, Stripsey, (Starman sidekick who doesn’t get treated with the respect he deserves) who is coming back from a coffee run. Reader sees him, and is like “he’s very dad shaped I can trust him.” And koala clings herself to his leg.

Meanwhile everyone else is running around the brownstone trying to find her and Pat wanders in and is like “I know as a sidekick I’m not supposed to ask questions but I gotta ask…” and lifts up his leg to show Reader.

The rest of them try to get Reader to open up but she refuses. Like if they try to feed her she throws the food in their faces but if Pat gives her a snack she eats it. Also I think this version of her in more chaotic and unknowingly uses her magic to mess with them. She’s not trained yet but her magic likes making their chairs disappear and their coffee to spill on them.

But then the events of the pilot happen and even if Reader didn’t prefer Pat he’s the only one left. So Reader is raised by him and that makes Mike her little brother.

The events of the show start happening and Reader finds Courtney with the Cosmic Staff and is like “she’s going to get herself killed I gotta help this little shit.” Courtney tries to recruit her because of her powers but Reader is very stern about not joining the JSA, she refuses to be on the team that had Dr Fate but doesn’t explain it any further.

As for her powers she’s not very well trained but is still very powerful. She’s spent her whole life with Pat accidentally causing problems because she can’t control her power. She has no one to train her since Kent Nelson died and she doesn’t know any magic users. Normally she just goes to an abandoned place, away from people (so no one gets hurt) just to practice. Still I think she’s randomly using magic that she’s comfortable with, especially to annoy the people she doesn’t like.

I do think she would be able to stop the events of episode ten (iykyk) because she uses illusions to trick Brainwave so they can escape. She doesn’t really plan it or know what she’s doing but does it with ease, proving to the others just how powerful she is.

During the final battle she finally shows how powerful she is. Because she believes in not only herself but the people around her. After the battle is over she agrees to join the team under the condition that she never has to work with Dr Fate. This is an non issue since there isn’t one anymore.

Since the villain in S2 is Eclipso I can see that being interesting too. One of the things Eclipso does in her inside their heads and makes them see their worst nightmares or things that scare them. I think he would use that to make her relive the massacre. This when she reveals her past to the others and the guilt she has about her people’s deaths. And since his powers stem from dark magic this would be a hell of a fight.

Also the Shade is introduced in that season and I can her matching his cryptic energy only she’s wearing a different color scheme and he’s like “the rest of these children get on my nerves. But you I like.” He would be a questionable influence but could help her with dark magic.

Even though a lot of people ship Rick and Beth (they are confirmed cannon) I like Reader and him. Both lost their parents at a young age and have to carry on the legacy but don’t know how to do it. Both tend to be a little reckless despite this. And since I’m S1 Rick wants to kill Solomon Grundy because of him killing his parents, I think Reader wouldn’t bat an eye where as everyone else is trying to stop him. Because she gets it. Also I like the foil of magic vs science.

I hope this made sense without my fangirling getting in the way. But let me know what you think Love💕💕💕💕

Request Guideline (2023 Edition)

if you haven’t read my last post (i’ll link it here if you want to read) i’ve decided to revamp my page a little. i’m getting back into writing so i thought i should make another request guideline that better aligns with me and what i want to write and who i want to write for. so enjoy ;)

please make requests here. if there’s any problem with the link let me know! (the link doesn’t work at the moment i’ll add it as soon as i get my laptop back — click the link in my bio or on my masterlist in the mean time :) )

Guidelines:

When requesting please give me the character/celebrity, the show or movie they are from, a description of what you want, whether it will be fluff, angst, smut etc and if you want to be tagged. 

i may not always do smut, especially if it’s not something i’m comfortable with. this is not always the case however but if it is then i’ll let u know if i cannot complete the request.

Please specify if you would like it to be a female, gender neutral or male reader. Just as i explained in my previous post i do not write malexmale smut as it is nothing something i have any experience with - sorry. I will do threesomes (or more) where at least one woman is present :) 

I wont write an imagine about a gay character being straight. 

I am willing to write imagines about darker topics. Such as depression, suicide, eating disorders, etc. I will not however write in detail about rape but i am okay with it being mentioned/ hinted.

My intention is not to glorify or romantise any of these thing, especially since some of them are things i have gone through myself. In the past i haven’t always been sensitive or appropriate with the way i’ve handled them and i’m incredibly sorry if i’ve ever offended anyone or triggered them - this was never my intention. I think you're one of the few i see who prefers cody over steve. Not judging! Just making an observation. I also love cody. And initially i preferred george as sephiroth, but honestly, tyler has really grown on me. Kinda sad to see people prematurely judging caleb though. Like come on, at least give him a chance.

Steve's the reason I always thought AC cloud was emo. I get now that Cloud was literally dying but honestly, he just sounded like a miserable git being all poor me through the entire film. That's why my fave scenes are the fighting ones cause Cloud doesn't talk in them 🤣

Obvs after reading up and learning the lore I know better, but I've never been a fan of his voice. He sounds so old. Cloud is 23 in AC and I wouldn't have been shocked if someone said he was 35.

Cody sounds young. Caleb sounds young. I especially think male VAs should sound the age of the character they're playing. It's one thing to play the role well like Rick does, but he still makes me believe Zack is in his 30's and for me that makes him wrong for the part.

I feel bad for Caleb getting a load of hate just cause he's not Rick. He's doing a good job and if he wasn't being compared to another va by salty losers who wanna hear someone else I think he'd been getting more positive feedback.

I honestly don't get why anybody prefers Steve to Cody, though. Cody is amazing! The way he plays Cloud made me a fan of Cloud ❤️

Britt is a great Tifa, and Rachael Leigh Cook was also a good Tifa. Maybe not as low registered as I think the devs imply Tifa sounds, but she did good. Britt's better though. Britt is how I always imagined Tifa sounded.

I have no opinion of the Sephiroth VAs. Honestly, they all sound the same to me. Which I don't think is bad, they all sound consistently good and alike so I think that helps the transition between VAs work better. Tyler seems a very sort of smooth Sephiroth. Like you can get a sense of this terrible beauty through his voice over the outright sinister side most people think of when they think of Seph.

I don't like how Briana does Aerith. I literally play saying "stfu Aerith" whenever she's screaming. I did like Mena Suvari as Aerith. I thought she was easy to listen to even though I didn't like Aerith in AC either. I've never liked her, but Mena had a good voice for Aerith. I wouldn't go around demanding SE replace Briana with Mena.

Preferring one va over another is about taste and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Harassing SE, the devs and the VAs because you don't like how someone sounds is being a shit bag and you should stfu. That is not about opinion. That's you being a git and nobody wants to hear you whining 🤣
