I decided to do my own list of 30 prompts and I’m going to do a bunch of spooky fan art inspired by Classical Art! I’m determined to finish this challenge 😤 This is Hellboy inspired by “Christ with Sainted Knights” by J.C. Leyendecker✨🔥🗡️ I am so excited about this piece! We have Hellboy holding his destined crown, Liz with her blue flame, and Abe wielding a sword that is slaying Sammael with a fallen Rasputin at their feet.

Gladys Knight joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1997. If anyone is familiar with a black member of the Church, it's usually her.

My favorite story about her comes from my husband. He served his mission in Las Vegas, where she was living at the time, and ended up getting assigned to her ward. One of the assignments the missionaries had at the time was to cut costs to the mission by finding living arrangements with members of the Church wherever possible. He was serving in her ward and was present in the ward council meeting when they brought up the need to find a source of cheaper, safe housing.

Without missing a beat, she chimed in helpfully with, "I'll just buy them a house." To which she was met with a loving, yet exasperated "Sister McDowell, you can't do that."

He said she was incredibly nice and would do anything to take care of the missionaries.

If you didn't know she had a choir for a time that was doing gospel music inspired by African and African American traditions, those albums are worth every penny. I have both of them and they're my favorite worship music I own.

A lot of people like to say that tarot is evil and against Christianity. But A. E. Waite and Pamela Colman Smith imbued the Rider-Waite tarot not only with Jewish and Greco-Roman, but also Christian, symbology. Tarot is for people of any spirituality.

The text requires careful reading in the context of the whole of Chapter 15 concerning the resurrection of the dead. ... So Tanguish could possibly become the Saint of QPRs?

The idea of Tanguish being a Saint that folks in QPR relationships pray to is amazing to me. And it would fit his story arc -- a Saint is joined in lasting friendship by a knight and dear acolyte, and it is working with him, by him, and through him that his miracles are done. If he were a Saint in the more Catholic-leaning style, I feel like he would be a great Saint for QPR.

... however, Tanguish, the beloved character, isn't real. But this did get me thinking about actual, literal Catholic saints, so here I have compiled for you a couple that I, someone who isn't Catholic and who has no experience with Catholic ritual or customs outside of its few intersecting lines with Protestantism, would consider Saints of QPR, with the help of a book I bought recently because I like the idea of religion but not the actual practicing of it: A Saint A Day According to the Liturgical Calendar of the Church, compiled by Berchmans Bittle.

St. Raphael the Archangel; Feast Day, 24 October

St. Raphael is one of the [several] saints often recommended to people having trouble with, or looking for, lasting love. His main story involves Tobias, a young man on a journey to collect money owed to his father. During his journey, Raphael saves him from many harms both physical and spiritual, even going so far as to help Tobias marry the love of his life, a young woman afflicted by a demon who keeps killing her husbands. The way he combats this demon is by having the two stay celibate during the three days after their marriage, during which Raphael binds the demon and saves them. The emphasis in this part of the story is that lust and carnal love are what called the demon to the young woman, and so platonic love [and also the perfect Love of God] is what defeats it.

Even though this story does end with Tobias getting married and having a more traditional love, I think given Raphael's story involves so much intentional companionship, and given there is a heavy emphasis on the merits of platonic love as something that can help bind demons, I think he would be a great saint to pray to for help in QPR relationships, especially if it involves interceding in the relationship where you feel like you need growth in companionship, being an attentive partner attuned to the other person's needs.

St. John the Evangelist; Feast Day, 27 December

St. John the Evangelist! [Points in raised Protestant!] Hey! Hey! I know him! John was one of the Apostles [was there when Christ was around], "the disciple whom Jesus loved (John 21:7). I just, really like that the verse literally doesn't even call him John, it calls him "The disciple whom Jesus loved." Could you imagine being loved by someone so much, for a moment, your name is simply "the person they loved." I feel like there's some strong QPR vibes there. Bring with that the fact that, when Jesus was crucified, he declared to John that his mother, Mary, was now John's mother, and told Mary that John was now her son. Now, I'm sure there's a lot of biblical history you could add into the unpacking of that -- unfortunately I am not a biblical historian, and don't know how much Mary's life would have been impacted if she no longer had one of her sons to help her day-to-day. But even without that context, it is a mighty thing to love and trust someone so much, that as you are dying, you entrust the safety of your family to them. Not only that, but you declare they are your family, blood of your blood.

It is for this reason that John the Evangelist is already the patron saint of both friendship and love, but I feel like he is a very close parallel to QPR relationships. Would you trust your partner not just with yourself, but with the love and respect of your family as well? I would think so. I would hope so.

Saint Clare of Assisi; Feast Day, 12 August

Saint Clare was first led to Christ [and friardom] by Saint Francis of Assisi, and their stories are closely entwined because of this. Clare's story goes that she was betrothed to marry at the age of 12, but protested she wanted to wait until she was older when it would make more sense. During her wait, she heard Saint Francis preaching, and was so taken by his teaching that she decided to devote herself to God and have no other husband than Jesus Christ [if you don't know that much about Christianity in general, basically, everyone is Christ's bride, and after you die, you get to live with him in the perfect house he built you.] Anyway, Clare's family didn't approve of her decision, so in the dead of night, Clare sneaks out of the house and meets up with Saint Francis, who cuts her hair and dresses her in sackcloth, so she can live as a friar. After this she goes on to found her own abbey, where she is described as being humble and kind, always taking care of the sisters of her order, washing their feet and coming to them in the middle of the night when they're sick.

So, we're going to squint really hard at the very modern, Mulan-style queerness of "sneaking out of your disapproving family's house to cut your hair and temporarily live as a man." We're going to take that, hold it very close to us, and gently put it at the center of my little "web of QPR" I'm weaving around these Catholic Saints. What a way to put queer in QPR, even temporarily. Add to that the fact that Clare and Francis are bound up together as friends, so devout to each others' teachings they spearhead each other further in their fellowship with Christ. Then put on top of that the platonic love Clare shows to her sisters through acts of care and service, and I think Clare is a great contender for Saint of QPR.

That's it. That's the list.

Any Catholics following me that are still, by some miracle, reading this, I apologize if I in any way butchered your religion. That! Was not my intention! I admit I don't know the best way to be respectful, it's a culture I was raised adjacent to, not in. My closes approximation is my roommate, who is ex-catholic, who speaks with about this level of humor when I pin her down long enough to talk about saints. I think she would have fun with this little post -- but she is my friend, and and also, not Catholic anymore. I have seen her practice more Navajo spiritualism than I have seen her practice Catholicism.

So. Preemptive apologies. Feel free to rip me a new one.

However if you're Catholic or ex Catholic and you think this is either funny or in any way accurate, give me your thoughts I want them. I tried to do this with as little Googling as possible, because, book. The book is old, so my list of Saints is limited, and I'm sure other queer catholics have done much better takes and put them online somewhere.

So, it's not actually "St. Michael"; he's Michael the Archangel.*

I promise I have a point.

Mike Wheeler and I share a similar name, so I was thinking... why Michael? It's a nice name, a popular one, it means "Who is like God?", and it's a callback to two (or four*, I should say) 80s films I love that the Duffers have taken inspiration from:

In The Goonies (1985), the protagonists are Mikey and Brand Walsh. They live in the Northwest with their friends, the Goonies. In the story, the kids are trying to ignore this total ass who has bought their town (very similarly to another total ass who did the same thing to this old lady—) and try to make the most of the hours they have left in each other's company before discovering there's a pirate treasure belonging to "One-Eyed Willy" nearby that they could use to buy back their homes. It's about some kids on their bikes, led by Mikey on an adventure.

Then, there's It (and It: Chapter 2 (various releases)), where Bill has lost his brother Georgie down a storm drain. He doesn't believe there is no way he has simply vanished and is caught between having a good summer with his three friends and trying to discover what really happened to Georgie. When horrific occurrences begin happening throughout their Northeastern town, Bill befriends Beverly, Ben, and Mike, and leads this bunch of kids on their bikes to fight a demon clown.

Then there's E.T. (1982), when Elliott takes in an alien with the help of his brother Michael and they... wow, they were allowed to write any and everything back then. Well, the government comes for the alien, and Elliott and Michael lead a bunch of kids on their bikes to escape with the alien and send it home.

This Mike dude gets around, especially on his bike.

But why the name "Michael"? Why not Bill or Will? Why not Elliott?

Well, Michael the Archangel is sometimes called God's strongest angel. In the Bible during the war in heaven, where Satan—who takes the form of an enormous "red dragon" with multiple heads—and his angels, are cast from heaven, he is the one whom God grants the strength to cast him out. Michael then takes Satan's position in heaven (Rev 12:7-12). Michael was also the angel sent to dispute Satan's claim over Moses's body (Jude 1:9-10) and it should be noted Moses is known as God's friend (Exodus 33:11) even though they disagreed several times.

Early Christians regard Michael as healer, the one to take Satan's place as the accuser (he is sometimes depicted with a scale), and the Archangel—the angel who ranks above all others, like a first knight. Some Catholic teachings (I am not Catholic) tell of Michael as the head of God's Army, the angel of death, the judge of souls, and the patron of the Chosen People of the Old Testament. There are even prayers devoted to him to bless armies heading off to battle. Many protestants recognize the relationship between Michael and God and Christ, even suggesting Michael is Christ before he was born. Now, of course, I don't know how true this is because I'm not the One who made that Decision.

He's also known as the patron "saint" of chivalry, police and militaries, and paramedics.

This sounds a little like our Mike Wheeler. Until the party falls apart in ST3, he's president of AV club, the dungeon master, and has the final decision of who is let into the party. He dislikes Max, but helps her up when she falls, he jumps off a cliff to save Dustin from having his teeth cut out of his face, he protects Lucas from Billy when Steve fought him, and he is very much the one who adopts his friends like a guardian angel.

So, it's almost as if—

—there's another person who uses this imagery and sees these similarities, and this person could really use a guardian angel against a demon right now. Now, we don't know for sure if anyone in the party is religious or spiritual, but we do know at least one artist.

I like how both Marika and the Omens were made further sympathetic by the DLC because the inescapable cycle of violence and abuse has been a prevalent theme in the Souls series since game 1 and Leda specifically tells you to your face that the Hornsent might be on the losing side of a war but "they were never saints" and the cruelty of the crusade shows you explicitly that it doesn't make the genocide against them right and the unnamed Hornsent that's a part of Leda's troupe has a death line if he's included in the battle in Enir Ilim that begs Miquella to "redeem his clan" and it's directly implied and even stated by some phantom npcs that Marika abandoned Messmer in the land of shadow to carry on her crusade AND further implied that Messmer was not a callous general but in fact beloved by his men and close allies AND that he even felt deep remorse for the allies that betrayed him when they questioned the crusade itself (black knight ashes and such) and that this is very clearly a tragedy with infinite layers of nuance and the way systemic abuse can trickle down across generations, RIGHT down to the fact that despite Miquella sees the sins of his mother and her kingdom as horrid and in need of change that he STILL walks the damn near EXACT same path and plan that she did and meets his ruin because of it

And YET the way some people have decided to take this whole story and the DLC is by picking sides and saying shit like "Well the Hornsent deserved it." My brother in christ the entire message of the DLC, and perhaps even the entire SERIES just blew right over your head like a 747. In the game that can directly guide you towards Ranni's ending where she forcibly removes gods from the Lands Between altogether. An ending that apparently most people get/go for and love. Impressive stuff.

You shrieked and stumbled back a step, looking around frantically. For some reason, Saints knows why, you’d put the helmet on backwards. Now you were struggling to get it off, unable to see anything. He bit back a laugh when you straightened up and ceased your antics.

“Sir.”

“What are you doing?”

A pause.

“Trying out different ways to wear a helmet, Sir.”

“I can see that.” He said, moving closer to tap a finger against the metal. You jolted a bit and he grinned to himself. “The issue, sweetheart, is that it’s my helmet.”

Another pause.

“Is it?”

“Christ.” He mumbled, pinching the bridge of his nose before inspecting the situation. “Don’t move, okay?”

You stilled as he got a good grip on the helmet and slowly but surely removed it. All your desperation had done nothing to help but Nikolai, calm as a cat, freed you of the dilemma easily. Your face was flushed when he was done and he tucked the helmet under his arm before speaking.

“How did you get my helmet?” He asked and you shrugged helplessly.

“You left it in here.”

He ran a hand over his face and shook his head, giving you a soft smile. One that he knew always made you blush. You did so, then, and his smile grew with satisfaction. Oh, his little knight. So cute.

“Get some sleep, Y/N.” He told you, Captain’s orders, and you quickly nodded before he left the tent.
