I'm curious as to your absolute favorite part of each Total Drama season and each Disventure Camp season.

total drama

season 1: it may be just because i haven't watched this season in a while, and because it's definitely not my favorite if i had to pick, but i think what stuck with me the most were the duncney first kiss scene (which was sooo adorable i miss them sm <//3), gwen accepting to go on a date with trent (i miss them.. sob....), harold's little >:3 after courtney got eliminated, and gwen and geoff's entire arc in geoff's elimination episode. if i had to choose between all of those, i'd pick the latter. it was such a fun dynamic that unfortunately was soon forgotten.

season 2: a lot of justin scenes are iconic but in the end i have to go with a harold scene, which would be the one in which he punches duncan in the face. yeah that's my favorite part always. what a great guy i love him sm. i also really like the entire dynamic of duncan-harold-heather-leshawna as a group they were AMAZING and even without leshawna in that one episode they SLAYED i love that silly trio

season 3: so since you didn't ask for a specific scene but just for a part, i'll just have to say the entire aleheather arc was amazing. they are such a well-constructed ship and i adore them. i cannot picture them with anyone else but themselves. my favorite scene to come out of the entire season also comes from them: when they're dancing on the train, singing "you are the worst, why must you torment me?" oh god they have it so bad for each other

season 4: roti is so forgettable which is sad because it has so many great characters.. i'll have to go with something related to jo since she's my fav and made the season better, i really liked her bickering with brick and anne maria. she's truly a bisexual enemies-to-lovers icon. i love the scene in which she and brick meet up and start ranting about who ran the most

season 5: that season didn't exist wdym?? but in all honesty aleheather dating was awesome and i miss them sm.. when chris said 'are you two DATING??' something in me shifted he was so funny for that idek why

season 6: ugh i hate you so tdpi.. shawn and jasmine dodging the lasers was pretty dope tho

season 7: hard to say because ridonculous race has a lot of GREAT moments but i just loved the dynamic of the cadets in general. i love how macarthur softened up after breaking sanders' arm and how much she cared for her. i also think the step-brothers were awesome and one of my favorite total drama scenes ever is when they realize how much they have in common. i miss those two goobers! the goths were also iconic and i love every moment they are on the screen, but when they came back to the show dressed in even more hardcore goth i LOST IT /pos

season 8: the rajbow kiss. come on. did you think i'd say anything else? the rajbow kiss was ICONIC

season 9: the fact that it ended... that was the best part. but in all seriousness, i really liked ripaxel. i think this is a hot take at this point. even though they were very rushed, they were such a healthy, happy couple. i was scared for them when axel said that awkward goodbye to ripper but i was so relieved for them in the finale. ripaxel definitely made the season better for me

season 10: i love the scene where damien- oh what's that? season 10 is entirely in my head? oh i would've spoiled TD:TBBG? my bad chief

disventure camp

season 1: i will never forget when i actually teared up when miriam and jake opened up to each other... besides that when alec and fiore started plotting together i became a different, better person. i miss them :( please come back to me lovelies :( i also really loved the tomjake kiss but. yeah we all know what i feel about them now. i miss them so fucking much it's not even funny

season 2: kai standing up to yul was so funny to me because why did his hair go like that /pos i remember i had a doodle in one of my notebooks that was kai going haywire the way he did in that scene and i scribbled the following words by him, with an arrow pointing towards him: 'same guy who goes namaste n shit'. also jaiden... save me jaiden... they were definitely my favorite part of the season :3

season 3: i'll definitely update this after the entire season comes out (october btw. yes i calculated. i put it in my agenda and everything /srs) but the villains alliance is by far the most promising and amazing part of the season. i can't wait to see where it goes next!

I'm watching Succession for the first time (taking breaks tho because I can only handle so much rich white nonsense), and here's what I have

Kendal: Where do I begin with this guy? He's either at an 11 or a -10, and there's no in-between. His version of love is a fucked up version where the chief operating system is based on transactions. His only true friend is Stewy, and he's a backstabbing little shit whose loyalty and affection are also based on transactions. For all his anger towards his dad, he is very much like him and will probably be another Logan Roy when he gets older.

Shiv: classic white feminism but wants to be one of the boys. She wants to be one of the boys so fucking badly. And not to be a Tom defender here (I'll get to him soon) but she takes out all her inner turmoil for not being one of the boys out on Tom regularly by not coming to his defense whenever her dad and brother fucks with him. She uses Tom as like a stand-in for the company, and when talks of her coming into the company comes into play, his usefulness wanes. She pretends she is a good person, but she's not.

Roman: a mommy kink weasel. He's exactly what's on the tin. Have you ever seen a kicked dog try to pretend he wasn't kicked but gets kicked again and again? That's Roman. All that bluff all that bullshit nonchalant and pervy attitude is a front for the same scared small child who gets kicked around a lot. The moment he's at the presence of his father all that bluff all that bullshit crumbles into dust because he's truly fucking scared. He takes all that and puts it on anyone he deems socially and physically weaker than him (yes, that means children)

Conner: god damn Conner, consistently useless every time. He knows he's useless, too. He knows he was a starter child. The one the parents test out on before actually parenting on their subsequent children. All these fickle aspirations just to make himself seem like part of his father's family, but he knows in his heart he's not, and he hates that.

Greg: a dope, idk. Truly a useful idiot. He's trying so hard to be a shit person like the Roy children, but he fails even doing that. You can say he was a shit person by hiding copies of those cruise incident documents, but like he knew he was in a den of snakes, he needed to protect himself. But a dope because he could have stayed in his grandpa's will and get a 250 million dollar inheritance had he just leave a company where there is no guarantee of a future. Just a dopey dope.

Tom: If only we can examine your weird hang-up with Greg. Just crack open that skull of his and take a look around. But seriously, him taking out all his aggressions on Greg is indicative of a larger thing with being married to Shiv and being attached to this family. The thing with Tom is that he's a status climber. He wants power, and that's why he married Shiv. Does he love her? Probably. It's hard to say. He loves that she's a Roy and her proximity to a powerful family and what that means for him. But does he truly love her as a person? It's hard to say. He loves power, and the Roy family is very powerful.

never really played sports, outside of some soccer and cross country when i was a little kid

Agata is the casual/hoodie guy. He has a few hoodies he likes to wear.

Ibuki always dresses formally, but not not wear a full suit when he's out and about

Sabu always dresses punk/alt.

Hino dresses like he walked out of a magazine, and is fond of long coats and soft sweaters

Free always dresses loud and borderline tacky. He likes loud colors and fun patterns. He tries to tone it down, but his closet is a mish mash of all kinds of materials

look, i understand. notes around here doesn't make sense. you make the best gifset ever and will get 20 notes. but then one day you're just pissed at the world and tumblr and just feel like giffing anything, and doesn't put any effort or time to it.... then BAM, in one day, 200 notes

my advice is.... do your thing and don’t mind others. watched something amazing? DO IT. got a new ship you would die for? DO IT. and be creative

and don't be mad or upset with the notes, it just happens. those 20 notes you got are from people that liked what you did, or related to, or is from something they've seen in ages and now THANK GOD someone is making them and the high quality is just chief's kiss. enjoy those 20 notes and be proud and just keep doing them!! and self reblog as many times you want those you are more proud of (avoid the spam tho) just in case some of your followers missed

ohhh also try new ways to gif stuff, i’ve seen some edits here that are soooo dope and i have no idea how to do, but there are tutorials you can look, even the owner sometimes is nice enough to teach how they do. also, try to improve your coloring skills, there are so many tutorials and i’m always seeing them to learn something new and most times i do because everyone have their way to do stuff

okay that’s probably not what you wanted to hear or maybe it won’t help at all... but i’ve been making gifs for 8+ years and now i just want to gif something i liked or thought it was funny and i need to share, that’s it. i can’t stress enough with notes or whatever anymore

Overall, interesting start. I like a modern/female telling of lord of the flies and lost. It reminds me a lot more of lost, but lost reminds me a lot of LOTF. And here they are actually still “kids” without adults so. I will see how it goes.

- MC goes into the Comte's room.

- Comte: "ohai MC"

MC: "ohai Comte. Are ya busy?"

Comte: "Not for you babe, what's that smell?"

MC: "I wanted to thank you for that dress and made a shit ton of muffins and brought one of six different kinds for you because idk your type."

Comte: "I'm not muffin-ist and love all kinds of muffins, muffin. Come have tea with me. I made the tea, not as good as Sebastian's tho"

MC: "Yo, this shit is dope. You should go into this professionally"

Comte: "Thanks...so I know I said I love muffins but help me eat them there's too many"

MC: "Cool, but I'm going food shopping with Sebas right after"

Comte: "Cool. How was the play?”

MC: “It was cool. I cried and shit.”

Comte: “I’m sure Will liked that lol”

MC: “Just like I liked Will--I mean, the play!”

Comte: “lol He is one attractive mofo *sips tea*”

MC: “Cool...so how ‘bout we gossip ‘bout Will now?”

- MC tells Comte what she had learned about Will  from Arthur. Comte says he used to live with a friend in the mansion, but the friend left and a few months later, he felt Will’s will (lol) calling to him and then had him join him in the mansion. MC’s as easy to read as a book that she wants to know more and Comte teases her before going into storytelling mode.

- cue sepia-toned memory of Comte and Will

- Shakes: “wtf took you so long to get back from your trip, pops?”

Comte: “Now, now, son. I brought you presents. Look at all this fruit with peels and shit I picked up for you!”

Shakes: “...I want to be inspired by these, but all I’m presented with is shit.”

Comte: “Oh, I forgot, I got you this because it represents having more than one face”

Shakes: “Gee dad, thanks!”

- end sepia-toned memory storytime 

- Comte: “And then Leo came. I’m feeling so fuckin’ nostalic rn.”

MC: “So why did Will leave?”

He pulls out an envelope from a drawer

MC: "Holy shit yes, but idk how to dance"

Comte: "Dancing shoes aren't required. I'll take that as your RSVP"

- cut to MC and Sebas in town after shopping

- Sebas comments about how something good must have happened because she's as easy to read as a book and she confesses about the masquerade.

- Sebastian: "omg the Comte loves you. You better fucking enjoy that thing"

MC: "You bet your sweet butler ass I will. Gonna go see Will and shit."

- Sebas goes stiff as a board, but not in reaction to her words

Sebastian: "OH FUCK I FORGOT A GROCERY ITEM FOR DINNER TONIGHT. Go home ahead of me, Imma go get that precious item"

MC: Are you fucking serious??

- cut to MC in a carriage riding home.

- Driving along, she sees Will out the window! Activating stalker mode.

MC: “Yo dude, stop the train!”

- She hops out of the carriage before it’s come full stop. She watches as Will makes like Swiper and leaves a florist shop. Somehow not being noticed, she follows him to an empty cemetery and watches as he stops in front of a gravestone. MC thinks that she should leave, and, in typical MC fashion, doesn’t.

- MC: Whose grave is that wtf

Dazai: “Maybe it’s a friend’s grave lol”

MC: “Holy fucking shit, don’t scare me like that, Dude-san!”

Dazai: “lel I followed you in this stalking train”

MC: “Why do you think that grave is a friend of Will’s?”

Dazai: “lmao the florist shop color-codes their bouquet ribbons. As you can see, red and blue ribbon means “RIP Friend” ofc lol”

2- who’s your favorite professor or teacher?

Definitely Lydia Greyrose! Ice is still one of my favorite schools and the fact that she was originally supposed to be the headmaster is so dope. I also just like the headcanon that she has liked, slayed dragons and killed men in her prime but has this very sweet, grandmotherly persona. Also I like to think that Merle and Her and like God Friends and talk the tea a lot :)

3- what’s your favorite gear set?

OOF good question. This might not be the most acurate answer b/c i haven’t been able to play the game as of late and i know there was a lot of lil updates that included gear sets, BUT! My current favorite set is either the Archangel set from the crowns shop OR the Mage’s Wintry Wrap set from Polaris. They SNAPPED with that robe design tbh!

39- who’s one NPC that you really like, but most people you know hate?

Listen, ladies, lads, all y’all, would it be that controversial if I said Morganthe b/c honestly? Some of y’all dead ass have been out here calling her a whore. Like. Why. Malistaire and Cob did the same Villain shit she did but literally b/c she’s a woman and not a sad pale twink man (i still love u tho malistaire, mwah).

party yesterday and the night before was really good

it’s cool talking to new people who are different ages and have different experiences from you!! everybody was really memorable, and nice. good mix of people for sure.

i really liked hanging out w people and just having a chill time yesterday. hope theres more opportunities to hang out w everyone. endless joints being passed around. we thought we ran out of alcohol but then there was a ton more in the freezer LOL. that’s how you know a party’s good.

one guy, ama_ris, was a total party dad, checked on everyone, made sure volume wasn’t too loud outside, also yiked on some chick and we were all like oh mah god LOLOL apparently someone who wasn’t black said the n word and he made a psa to erryone that that word wasn’t ok LOL it was like oof but yeah. i gave him an edible but just one since he already took half a tab of molly LOL

jerem__y x_ue came through with his gf!! they were realy cute togetha. she’s really sweet and smiley. they were hella good at beer pong but they were playing against one dude m_att who was literally on the baseball team!!!! ma_tt literally made six cups in a row LOLOL but it ended up being a really close, hype game.

then i played w someone and i was actually IN THE ZONE and turned my competitive tryhard mode on. we were both killin it but we ended up very narrowly losing. but it was definitely a good game.

there were these three white girls who came and were havin a good time together and i really liked their vibe. i only met one of them but apparently she went to tino, same year as jer_my and they were like omg!!! LOLOL i talked to her for like ten seconds but her smile was so cute and bright that i got really smilely back LOL

the dance floor was SO INTENSE LOL. i’m not cool so i didn’t know the songs that well but people were like GOING AT IT yellin lyrics grindin on each other. i just like danced through it every time i moved rooms LOL whoo cannot match that energy but wish i could

whenever we went outside there were some dope conversations going on. a decent amount of tino people came thru, and it was nice seeing the homies again. n_ic_k and i r actually bffs now hehe. he was rolling for the first time in a year and i would see him every once in a while and he’d update me w how he was feeling. i’d be like u good homie :) LOL

this dude named con_over was fuckin lit at talking and really knew bay area culture. you could tell he’d hung out w a ton of different people, and he was really quick. he was talking to g_abe about like armenian people in the bay, and like competitive hs kids at lynbrook, about p flo LMAO yknow

The USMNT finally has a vision

Gregg Berhalter brings his tight philosophy from the Columbus Crew to the USMNT. Just one big problem: America doesn’t have a Federico Higuaín.

By the time the MLS playoffs rolled around in November, Gregg Berhalter had already been declared the next United States men’s national team head coach by the American soccer rumor mill. Fans tuned into the Columbus Crew’s playoff games to get a glimpse of how the USMNT might play in the future. And while we got to see what made Berhalter’s Crew a great MLS team, we also saw what he’ll be missing in his new job: Federico Higuaín.

Higuaín was Columbus’ hero in the knockout stage, scoring two goals against D.C. United. He sat the first half against the New York Red Bulls four days later, and when he came off the bench, he created this goal.

What American man can do that with any regularity?

There was a lot to like about Berhalter’s Crew. They kept the ball very well, often building slowly from the back, but also consistently looked for opportunities to play direct passes that beat defenders. They used the entire pitch, with wide players and central midfielders who were all equally capable of creating scoring chances. They had a good defensive shape and a well-defined pressing strategy. If Berhalter is a good coach, he can instill those principles into the USMNT.

But those principles worked as well as they did because of the talents of Higuaín — a sensational playmaking central attacking midfielder, commonly referred to as a No. 10. So how is Berhalter supposed to build a better, more attractive USMNT without a player like him? There are no obvious solutions to this problem, but plenty of potentially good ones.

The USMNT has always been on the hunt for a real No. 10

Berhalter, 45, is an adaptable coach. He played a much more conservative style as manager of Hammarby in Sweden, and had no problem setting up his Crew team to play direct when opponents gave them space to do so. But if U.S. Soccer wanted a coach to grind out results with his players’ excellent fitness and athleticism, they would have hired someone else.

It’s also clear from its recent hires that U.S. Soccer would like to move in a different direction. New chief sport development director Nico Romeijn, formerly of the Dutch FA, was one of the key figures in hiring Dutch-American general manager Earnie Stewart. He went on to hire Berhalter, who says he got most of his ideas about how the game should be played from the Netherlands. The USMNT wants to play stylishly like the Dutch do, with the ball on the ground.

“We want to use the ball to disorganize the opponent to create goal-scoring opportunities,” Berhalter told me in October.

The Crew succeeded at that by building their attack around Higuaín. One problem: there’s never been an Higuaín in the U.S. player pool.

Creative forward Joe Max-Moore filled the central attacking midfield role well when needed in the 1990s, as did smooth passing central midfielder Tab Ramos around the same time, then Claudio Reyna into the 2000s. The following generation fielded some other very good players in that role — second strikers Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan, most notably — but none of them was ever a true playmaking central attacking midfielder.

Most recently, that responsibility has fallen on a couple of young players — Christian Pulisic, who only plays wide for his club team, and Julian Green, who has been an effective defensive No. 10, but not much of a playmaker. There are a few promising attacking midfielders in the youth ranks, but none plays regular top division soccer at the moment.

What makes Higuaín so important to the Crew’s style?

To understand the problem that Berhalter is solving for, we need to talk about exactly what Higuaín meant to his system in Columbus.

This is Higuaín’s first highlight of the season, 11 minutes into the season opener. One day, an American man will show this kind of technique and movement with regularity (three sobbing emojis).

Higuaín can also create a ton of space for his teammates with nothing more than his dangerous reputation. Teams are often so scared of letting him get any time on the ball that they’ll chase him anywhere on the pitch. It’s not uncommon to see a midfielder close down aggressively on Higuaín, opening up huge space for one of his teammates to attack.

If you keep your eyes trained on Higuaín during a Crew match, it’s clear that he’s a vocal and demonstrative leader. Higuaín looks like a traffic cop, but one who commands the respect of a general. He will clap and give thumbs up in response to passes that weren’t intended for him, or point where he wants a pass to go or a teammate to run. And other players follow his lead on when to press aggressively or fall back into shape.

Berhalter can’t manufacture that. There’s no tactical solution for not having any players with Higuaín’s reputation or experience.

What Berhalter probably can solve for, though, is Higuaín’s final third contributions. Defenders will close down on any junk player who is central and 25 yards from goal, so if Berhalter can get the ball into that area, he can draw defenders out of position. Goals and assists won’t be that hard to replace either — this is where Christian Pulisic is 1,000 times better than anyone who’s ever played for the Crew.

What other stuff does the Crew do that might work for the USMNT?

There are some hard passes here, yes. Central midfielder Artur and left back Milton Valenzuela are probably a bit better at long passes than any of their American counterparts. But this build-up is mostly about good coaching. The Crew’s players know how they want to move the ball from back to front, and everyone makes good individual decisions about where to move and who to pass to. The structure and decision-making in this move are much more important than anyone’s talent, right up until the ball reaches Higuaín. There are even a couple of sloppy touches that the Crew don’t get punished for because they’re making all the right choices.

Berhalter’s commitment to playing out of the back has led defenders who were once pretty average with their feet to get really good. This very nice and somewhat terrifying exchange is typical of the Crew.

The U.S. men’s national team does not have silky-skilled center backs, but neither do the Crew, really. Watching American defenders try to play like this might scare even the most ardent of Pep Guardiola stans into screaming “HOOF IT,” but your anxiety will soon pass. Berhalter is, if nothing else, good at coaching the spacing and decision making necessary for playing the ball out of the back.

Once they get the ball forward, the Crew are really good at moving the ball inside and out to draw defenders out of position and create tap-ins for their center forward. This is a bit tougher to accomplish without a central attacking midfielder who picks perfect passes out wide, but the USMNT also has better wide options than the Crew. The most common source of USMNT goals during the Berhalter era is likely to be Pulisic runs to the byline, and cutbacks for a Josh Sargent (or Gyasi Zardes) finish from six yards.

Does all that sound exciting? WELL, HOW’S THIS FOR EXCITEMENT?

This — a line of two black-shirted forwards ahead of four black-shirted midfielders, waiting for the opponent to cross midfield rather than pressuring the ball — is the defining image of the 2018 Columbus Crew. Sure, they had 57 percent possession — good for second in MLS — but the other 43 percent of the time, they looked like this. If you watched more than one Crew match, this image is burned into your brain. The Crew were better at building up slowly through the middle than counter-attacking quickly, and they didn’t have great athletes to press high up the pitch, so they sat in this shape a lot and waited for opponents to cross midfield before aggressing.

Boring, right? Well, the USMNT has better athletes and worse deep passing than the Crew, so it appears that Berhalter’s USMNT is going to do something a little different.

Hell yeah. Pressing after losing possession might be a huge part of the solution to the Higuaín problem.

How is Berhalter’s USMNT going to play?

I have a theory — and I swear I had it before I watched this Behind The Crest video that the above screenshot came from — that Berhalter’s USMNT will play with a more aggressive, higher press instead of the Crew’s middle-block defense. It would make sense for a lot of reasons:

1. The USMNT has fewer players suited for build-up from the back than the Crew, so it should be more effective for them to start most attacks from higher up the pitch.

2. The USMNT has better athletes and fitter players than the Crew, so they can actually win the ball if they press aggressively, while the Crew probably would have wound up chasing shadows. The player pictured in the screenshot above, Kellyn Acosta, is among those perfect for applying pressure.

3. If you can force mistakes and win the ball high up the pitch, with the defense scrambling and very few players behind the ball, you don’t need a superstar No. 10 to control the game or create chances.

So, Berhalter will likely want to win the ball up high on the pitch while maintaining most of the other principles from his Crew teams, mitigating the absence of a No. 10 who is dominant for that level. He’s got a few ways he could set up his team to accomplish those things.

Formations do not equal tactics, of course. There’s so much more to a coach’s philosophy than the initial shape displayed on the lineup card. But the formation that Berhalter uses is going to tell us a lot about what he wants to accomplish, and what he thinks his personnel is capable of.

Option 1: Play the same 4-2-3-1 with the best Higuaín replacement he can find

Pros: Christian Pulisic is far and away the USMNT’s best player, and this gets him the most opportunities to get on the ball and make plays. Josh Sargent has shown the ability to play as an isolated lone striker, but getting an attacking midfielder close to him might benefit him a lot early in his career (he’s only 18 years old). Berhalter’s teams have always played some variation of this shape, so these players will certainly be well-drilled.

Cons: It demands a lot of discipline from Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie when the team might be better served by making their youthful legs run a lot. There’s little playmaking ability in this setup, and it’s tough to see how the ball is ever going to get to Pulisic in a dangerous area if the team doesn’t create turnovers.

Option 2: Adjust to a 4-3-3 and let your runners run

Pros: This requires less discipline and allows Adams and McKennie (or whomever plays those more advanced central midfield roles) to mess people up more often. If Berhalter wants to win the ball up the pitch, this formation should let them pressure aggressively with five players while the other five hold shape. Pulisic might not get on the ball as often, but he’ll be playing the role he’s used to at the club level. Playing someone like Wil Trapp in a true No. 6 defensive midfield role instead of using the double pivot from Berhalter’s preferred formation could make the play-out-of-the-back learning curve a bit more gradual, too.

Cons: The USMNT won’t be able to create much if they aren’t winning the ball high up the pitch, since there’s not much in the way of midfield playmaking without anyone in the No. 10 role and runners in central midfield. Failure to win the ball high could also lead to Sargent getting isolated. When Trapp has played this role for interim manager Dave Sarachan, rather than as part of a double pivot like in Option 1, he has struggled.

Option 3: Control midfield and optimize personnel with a 3-5-2

Pros: Outside of Pulisic, winger might be the shallowest area of the USMNT player pool. The team has plenty of good defenders, midfielders, and strikers. Why not find a way to get all the good players onto the pitch in roles they like? This setup allows the USMNT to spread some of the Higuaín duties around to a second striker and an attacking midfielder, rather than relying on one guy to fill the role or abandoning it altogether. The American fullbacks are all much better going forward than they are defensively, too, making them good fits for attacking roles in a back three setup.

Cons: Unless your outside center backs, advanced central midfielders, and strikers are well-drilled and have great chemistry, you won’t be taking advantage of wide areas that much. Creating a square ball or cutback from a winger to a striker is the primary means of chance creation in Berhalter’s system, so it seems unlikely he’d turn to this. He’d have to be really confident in his ability to coach a system that’s radically different than his previous one.

Option 4: RUN THE DANG 4-4-2

Pros: Listen, this is America. Enough with the fancy crap. We have some hard working dudes who know how to play a classic two-striker system. If you don’t have playmakers, getting two strikers on who can play off each other is a really good idea. There’s a reason that Bob Bradley and Jürgen Klinsmann both defaulted to this when they were otherwise stumped. These players are good at it and know how to play it.

Cons: Berhalter wants to control the possession battle and build up from the back through midfield — two things that are really difficult to do in a 4-4-2. It’s not impossible, not by any stretch, but you need elite players and even more elite chemistry. Unless your midfielders and second striker are all-world, you can’t control a game like this.

Whatever he does, Berhalter needs to get it right quickly — games of consequence are coming right up

It might seem like Berhalter has a lot of time, with the World Cup not coming until 2022, but he’ll have just four friendlies with all players available for selection before the 2019 Gold Cup this summer, and World Cup qualification isn’t far away after that. The addition of the CONCACAF Nations League to the calendar should be a welcome change for Berhalter, who will get three more competitive games between Gold Cup and the start of World Cup qualifying than any of his predecessors did.

Matches against Panama on January 27 and Costa Rica on February 2 will give us some idea of what Berhalter is thinking, but we won’t be able to draw any serious conclusions about the future of the USMNT until he gets his hands on his European-based players for friendlies against Ecuador and Chile in March.

His third game with a full squad will be against Mexico and the man a lot of American fans wanted to take over the USMNT, former Atlanta United manager Gerardo Martino. It will be played in Arlington, Texas, on June 11 in front of a heavily El Tri-leaning crowd of 75,000. The game will be called a friendly, but let’s be real, it won’t feel anything like a friendly.

The realistic best-case scenario is that Berhalter hits the ground running and gets his team playing the way he wants very quickly. They go on to win the Gold Cup and qualify for the World Cup comfortably. He’s more qualified than Bruce Arena and Bob Bradley were when they took the job, and his attention to tactical detail utterly dwarfs Jürgen Klinsmann’s. It wouldn’t be the least bit shocking if he’s an instant, roaring success.

It’s also pretty easy to envision a world where Berhalter’s ideals don’t fit the USMNT, and the Americans struggle to qualify out of CONCACAF like they did in 2017. He’s taking over a team at the height of a lost generation problem, and he’s faced with the task of turning teenagers into the focal points of a senior national team very quickly. There are plenty of good coaches who would fail in the same situation.

But that’s all a long way off. Step one for Berhalter: Solve the Higuaín problem, and from there, the rest might fall into place.
