My roommate's girlfriend (buzzed) and my roommate (blitzed) woke up to cats yowling in the alley last night right around the time I got home, and in a convincing display of her assertion that it's not CERTAIN we're getting a new cat soon (we are) my roommate asked if I wanted to go outside (it was midnight) and help them catch the one that seemed like maybe it was new to being outside. So I grabbed the carrier I've kept by the door in case our last project (Pete the tuxedo) came back (chewed a hole in the window screen and ran) and followed my roommate outside where her gf was lying on the ground with a tin of wet food trying to coax the cat from under the dumpster (nowhere near garbage day) and meowing (comfortingly?).
We ended up walk-chasing the cat down the street and Carolyn (roommate) actually got hands on her at one point, but the cat escaped (she didn't remember to zip the top of the carrier after she put the cat in) (this was when I realized she was drunk af and not just sleepy) so we spent another 20 minutes crawling around with phone flashlights on (still midnight) and eventually had to give up.
As we were walking back to the apartment (half a block away) I rolled a high enough perception check (permanent disadvantage due to adhd) to see that there was a man sitting nearly motionless in his SUV with all the lights off, lit only by the blue glow of his dash controls.
I said (quietly) "there's a whole-ass man who's been sitting in his car right here this entire time."
The other two (limbs a drunk and sweaty pretzel) processed this for a moment and giggled together. "oh well," said Julia (the toothpick keeping this thing together). "this is Chicago. He's seen weirder."
"oh for sure," I said, picking off leaf litter stuck to my elbow (humid). "I mean I feel like three lesbians chasing pussy at midnight is pretty normal around here anyway."
A (drunk) pause, then laughter so loud that something streaked from the bushes (cat) bolted across the road, and disappeared under a fence (welp).

So I guess the Scientologists are moving in next door?
A friend of mine and I have a mutual morbid fascination with Scientology, and she sent me an article recently about them opening a new “Ideal Org” -- a fancy recruitment center -- in Chicago. I was reading along, mostly intrigued by the real estate scam they’re possibly running, when I saw the address: 650 S. Clark.
650 S. Clark is essentially in my front yard. It’s twenty feet from my favorite bodega. I left my building and didn’t even have to go out of my way to walk past it en route to the bus I was catching. Hilariously, it’s between a pizza-themed sports bar and a Dunkin Donuts.
Actually, less hilariously, it’s between the sports bar and a college dormitory next to a Dunkin. Do not love that; this area is full of college students (traditionally an easy target for cults) and young professionals -- a less easy target but obviously a more lucrative one.
When I took this picture I thought, it doesn’t look very ready to open. But then I realized that the plywood is only covering the ground floor windows, and the plastic bags aren’t covering up exposed brickwork that needs tuckpointing -- they’re covering up the signs saying what it is. Which makes sense, the org has been keeping very hush-hush about getting the center set up.
Possibly because they know assholes like me also live in this area and are willing to call the city on them the absolute second they step out of line.
Anyway the building was derelict so at least they probably raised my property values some. And maybe if I go down to the rumored grand opening on Saturday I can get a free e-meter reading. I bet I’m full to the brim with engrams.

Neighborhood Korean grocery store sells their own kimchi with a variety of ingredients. Tragically it uses shrimp. Happily they also make a vegan batch. Vegan kimchi is lighter and sweeter much of the time and it's nice but I do like the pungency and umami flavor that jeotgal provides, and not ALL jeotgal is shellfish. One of my favorite kimchi recipes uses anchovy

House or Condo?
Day 4: “Condo or house? Let’s weigh the pros and cons! As a seasoned real estate agent in the diverse Chicago market, I understand that every buyer has unique preferences and priorities when it comes to their dream home. Whether you’re drawn to the low-maintenance lifestyle of a condo with amenities like a fitness center and rooftop deck, or you crave the space and privacy of a single-family home…

Valentines Day
Ship: Brettsey
Word count: 394
Authors note: not proofread and only slightly based on canon cause I said so. Enjoy!!
——————————————————————————
Matt watched as Julia laid on her back, playing with the mobile toy above her, smiling as little noises came from her. He got down on the floor of the living room and laid next to her, gently grabbing onto her kicking feet.
“Hey baby girl. Having fun?” He asks, as she squeals in response to hearing her dads voice. They stay like that for a while until Matt hears the front door open, and sees Sylvie’s boots. “Hello my valentines!” Sylvie exclaims, as she takes off her shoes and leans to pick up Julia. Matt makes his way back to standing, with a slight groan as his knees popped (getting older wasn’t supposed to feel like this right?), and he meets Sylvie with a kiss.
“How’d the ride along go with Griff?” “Great actually. He stayed calm and collected until we got back to the station and then he had his freak out. Thankfully it only happened once and let’s just say Hermann and Boden went into dad mode.” Sylvie says with a small laugh as they head into the kitchen.
“Griffin doesn’t freak out over things unless it’s bad. Like enough to make me squeamish. What happened?” “An elderly person at one of those old people apartments fell and hit their head pretty hard. Lots of blood. And a broken arm. I think it was the shock of what he saw and how he handled it in the situation that made him freak out.” “Ok well that makes sense. Especially if it was his first time. I won’t tease him about it.” Matt replies, as Sylvie gives him a knowing look.
Sylvie puts Julia in her high chair, as Matt sets the table. “I know it’s Valentines and all but we both know it’s just another day for us, so I didn’t do anything fancy, unless you want to call a heart shaped pizza fancy.” “I love it.” She replies as she grabs the jar of baby food and a spoon, and begins feeding Julia. After the three eat, and Julia is bathed and down for the night, Matt and Sylvie curl up next to each other on the couch, House Hunters playing in the background.
“Happy Valentines Day babe.” Sylvie says, kissing his cheek. “Happy Valentines love.” Matt says, pressing a kiss to her lips. It was the happiest line yet.
