I would really love for the rdr community as a whole to stop trying, (and failing), to defend Dutch, and shift the blame entirely onto Micah. Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption II are both beautiful and well thought out games both in the gameplay and the storytelling. But I think a lot of people simply ignore those things, hence my long rant of a post.

TLDR: I think Micah was intentionally written to be one dimensional, and Dutch was manipulative from the start. Arthur is just a unreliable narrator.

We play through Arthur's eyes and see/believe what he does. We can see Arthur's loyalty blinds him (and by extension, us) to Dutch's behavior. I would know peace if some folks to took a media literacy class. Red Dead one & two are shining example of the bias in an unreliable narrator. Video games are not exempt from literary tools because you control part of the story. That control is limited to the actions of your bias protagonist, in this case John and Arthur.

The same applies to Micah. Arthur never trusts Micah from day one, and so we as the player don’t trust him either. It would be incredibly lazy on Rockstar’s behalf to created as one dimensional of a character as Micah. But the thing is, Arthur views him that way, a no good money-hungry thief from the start. Arthur is able to see through him, but he is blind to Dutch’s similar behavior because of his loyalty. It’s an incredibly smart tool to use in video games. Once you replay the game without the blinders on of your first playthrough, you’re able to see that Dutch has behaved the very same ways from Chapter One, all the way through Chapter Six. The only difference is that Arthur (and we the player) is slowly becoming aware of the patterns for the first time.

Now, for the blatant mischaracterization of Dutch entirely. To blame everything on Micah diminishes Dutch’s character to such an extent it completely disregards the decades long manipulation he inflicted on the gang, that is very real and very obvious. I won’t get into the way each individual character’s behavior was effected by this, but I will speak about Arthur and John briefly.

Dutch takes in people that are vulnerable and that he knows he can manipulate for his own gain. Children included. Multiple children, in fact. He always has a plan, not to keep folks safe, but to keep everyone comfortably under his thumb. It was always, "Are you with me, or against me" from the beginning. Everyone was either a means to his end, or they were worthless. The second someone did not agree, it was a betrayal, and an attack. I don't doubt he did some things out of kindness, but there's always ulterior motives. Dutch is nothing but a man of pretty words that hide his manipulation.

Dutch maintains an air of grandiosity amongst the gang. He obviously holds the belief that he is above them in all ways. He believes he is their leader because he is simply better than the rest of them. He’s smarter. He’s this god-like figure in his mind. He’s their savior. Hence his distaste for any doubt, or even being challenged.

Lenny and the conversation he has with Dutch about Evelyn Miller for example. Lenny indirectly call’s Dutch’s empty words out and points out that both Miller (Dutch’s idol) and Dutch himself hide behind their flowery words and phrases. Or Arthur and Hosea voicing their concern about robbing Leviticus Cornwall, it’s seen as a betrayal. Or when Uncle pokes fun at Dutch in camp and Dutch says to him, “I would really like to kill you right now.” Dutch may not be entirely self aware, but any attack at him does dig at him for a reason. And this is all from chapter two! There has always been a pattern.

Dutch says he "saved" them. He saved Bill, and John, and Arthur and Lenny and Javier. He saved all of them, and he is above all of them. Dutch sees people as nothing more as tools to meet his goals. There are instances where he does seem to genuinely care, but the ulterior motive is always there.

Dutch and Micah were written with the idea that we see the story through Arthur’s eyes. Arthur is blinded by his decades long to loyalty to Dutch and slowly coming to the realization of the truth. Micah is incredibly one dimensional cause Arthur sees through him and views him as a rat from the start. The truth of the story can be seen through repeated playthroughs. Dutch’s paranoia from the start, questioning Arthur’s loyalty from Colter. Micah sniffing around about the Blackwater money from the beginning. Arthur’s journal entries about the his biased version of the truth. Media literacy is necessary even in video games. God.

My thoughts (and maybe headcanons) about Charles before the events of epilogue, and about how his life was going in these 8 years.

I think that the most important detail, is that he became more communicative thanks to gang, and had more social skills than he ever had in his whole life, which helped him moving into Saint-Denis, and living here, & have a goal to move into Canada and find a woman. But I have a feeling that he still didn't got used to the loud and big cities completely, so he was feeling uncomfortable here, and struggling socialising (especially when it's Saint-Denis, a civil city, high society, full of lawmen and other kind of stuff), so that's why he was living at the outskirts of the city (if I remember correctly, not sure where Charles lived).

I bet he wasn't going out for groceries too often, that he was getting outdoors only to the street fights, and out how food when his house was literally empty. At any other time he could be getting on a horserides somewhere out, just to get some rest from all the noise and relax in the silence, I think. And the reason behind that might be his sadness because of the thoughts that everyone died, nothing remained from the gang and its people, so he have no one now, he's all alone again after trying to live in a community where he's obligated to communicate with other people he got enough close and comfortable (Charleeessss😭😭😭😭).

Because, this man was mostly living on his own, from adolescence to adulthood, and got used to sleep under stars or in tents, he got used to the nature and calm wildlife atmosphere around him, when he's alone/there's only VDL gang. And the only active communication he have is street fighting, because that's the easy way to have some money, without too much words, that he's ready to do(also I think he might hunting and selling animal pelts/meat/fangs and etc).

Also the way how hardworking R* show him to us in all 6 chapters and two epilogues, he might be that type of people who are relaxing while doing some work, while always keeping themselves busy with something, just to be in a normal state and have some cause and sense of living. That one type of people who instead of sitting down or taking a nap goes to feed horses, lift and carry something heavy, chop wood and do all the stuff just to relax emotionally and psychologically.

Charles live peacefully in Canada with beloved wife and 2+ kids, he deserves it

Charles himself may be a reserved man but that doesn't mean he's afraid of speaking his mind or making his opinion known

So when he meets a woman who's just as confident with sharing her thoughts and opinions as assertively as she does, he finds it quite refreshing

And not to mention intriguing

And as soon as he learns about your artistic side?

If he wasn't hooked before he certainly is now

Charles wouldn't ever feel a need to defend you himself (unless of course it goes beyond your control) because he's well aware you can stand up for yourself

He probably just sits next to you while you argue with some random man at the bar about what he did that was so rude

Also plenty of friendly banter between the two of you

I could see the two of you being a problem solving couple so there'd be lots of discussion over what would be the most efficient way to do something or how you should go about a situation

Probably leads to a lot of hypothetical questions

Comes to find out that your self expression goes beyond words and your art is an extension of it

Probably tries his best to interpret your art and goes into in depth discussions with you about your artwork and process

Asks so many questions, it's quite endearing

I can also imagine that more often that not, he'd let you take the lead in most situations simply because he finds it adorable how much pride you get out of getting your way/being right

Your personality would probably dominate many aspects of your relationship. You want to eat at a fancy restaurant at Saint Denis even though we're two states over? Sure. You think we should take the long way home instead of the short route because you have a bad feeling? Absolutely.

Not to say Charles is a pushover, definitely not. It's just that you're his partner and he trusts your intuition and judgement enough to trust your every decision.

But if you're being straight up unreasonable he'll be there to ground you as well

Arguments would probably be insane. They'd probably be very passionate and loud, and it'd take a while to cool down and reconcile.

But at the end of the way, things always sort themselves out. Neither of you would be the type to just let things linger.

Charles would damn near forget why you’re there just liking the focused attention on him and how softly you brush his hair away from his face.

Until you pull out an eye lash curler and he’s convinced it’s a torture device cause why would anyone put that thing so close to their eyes and SQUEEZE? Hell no he’s not a fan

I think he’s the sort of guy who carries chapstick around but that’s is as far as “self care” goes for him. So when you’re putting things like primer on him and eye liner he has a hard time not rubbing his eyes immediately.

He will admit to his face feeling much softer thanks to the moisturizer but he’s not gonna develop a makeup routine lol

Javier however, this guy has at least a body lotion and a tinted sunscreen for the warmer months. He also loves the attention and how gentle you’re being.

Jumps at the offer when you ask because 1. Who doesn’t like being pampered? And 2. You get you be on his lap for about 15 minutes minimum and that’s where he likes you!

He likes lipstick marks though and to take photos of them for his own enjoyment and to look back on

Now Sean… he had a different idea of what was going on because when you sat on his lap his shirt was halfway off.

You cannot put eye makeup on him it’ll be smudged unless that’s the style you’re going for!

If you get his foundation shade it freaks him out to see his skin as one solid color. No freckles and rosy cheeks? He doesn’t recognize himself

That’s if he’s willing to sit still though, cause again he’s darling boyfriend is on his lap he can think of 5 other things to do!

Did it when he was younger but grew to prefer alcohol and only really does that.

Either the plug or leeches off of other people.

Like he just never has his own stuff, he's only smoking if someone will invite him.

He's cool enough that people don't mind but sometimes if no one has invited him he will "very stubly" try to suggest a session.

That's the only time people will get annoyed, they know damn well he's not bringing shit

He's always watching some show high too. Smiling Friends, Midnight Gospel, or Gumball

Javier

The plug, 100%

Super generous with his stuff, it's his way of bonding

Gets so excited to find out someone wants to smoke for the first time

"Oh, I got you! I'm off this weekend, you gotta smoke with me."

Has a bong collection too, it's pretty cool and he loves it.

Charles

He'll do it occasionally, like once in a blue moon really.

Does it more with Arthur if anything.

Great for a chill smoke, or if someone's freaking out and they need someone just there, they're always with Charles.

Charles will let it happen, even if they're a little noisy because he's been there unfortunately.

Did edibles once but she took wayyy more than she should've and greened out the fuck out

Figured, a bit later, a bong might be better and easier to measure so she asked to hit one of Javier's bongs.

God, everyone just wants him to switch to weed like everyone but it's been unsuccessful

It's because his tolerance is very high and they don't know why

Dutch tried to get him shrooms after reading about them but it ended in a very very heavy hospital bill and trouble with the police

His guilty pleasures are reading a fuck ton of stories and experiences about DMT and other kinds of drugs, he's so deep into subreddits and forums.

He never actually takes them too seriously though nor has been tempted to try them.

He doesn't smoke weed too often either, maybe to focus on something.

Sean

God, when is he not stoned.

His car smells so bad.

It's gotten to the point where he'll forget full interactions with people because he was so far gone but has had enough practice to look sober.

So when they bring something up, he'll look at them all funny asking "When was that??"

Dutch wondered if it was amnesia or something until he found the drawer of empty carts. Like, it was a graveyard.

People struggle to tell if he's high or not at times but eventually they figured always.

Tilly

Never does it, has not done it, and with absolutely no interest.

John's offered a couple of times when they were younger but it was always an immediate and stern no.

It isn't that she minds it really, she just doesn't want to.

She has no problem hanging out with the others if they're smoking.

But for the love of God, please do not bring that stench into the house, it will creep up to her room and she won't be able to sleep.

Uncle

He'll try to peer pressure people to do it but, he's so corny about it

He sounds like he belongs in an 80's infomercial against drugs.

"C'monnn, everyone here does it!" and Tilly responds with the nastiest side eye.

He's so much more funnier high though? He gets genuine chuckles and laughs out of people, it might be because they're stoned too.

Goes to his ego a bit though and he tries to be funny again sober but it falls flat so badly it's a bit embarrassing.

But it's Uncle so he's not embarrassed.

Karen

Obviously prefers alcohol way more, its effects last way longer.

She hates having to do constant hits.

She does have her own cart though where she's hitting blinkers that cannot be good for her at out.

Her PR is 30 seconds while making a bet with Sean once. (Yes she threw up.)

Sean is also always asking for a hit of her cart.

Dutch

Opposite of Lenny. Hears stories about trips and thinks it's the most profound, eye opening thing of all time.

If he catches the kids smoking, he'll start babbling on about them and the deeper meaning behind these trips or whatever. Not a single soul cares at all expect for Bill.

Molly will try to listen but she really doesn't gaf.

His big secret though is he tried shrooms himself too but it was a horrendous experience.

He was too far deep into his pro-shroom trips that could never be wrong to take it back and admit not everything was right that he gaslit himself into believing it never happened and it worked.

Hosea is the only one that knows this, he lets Dutch live his delusions.

Hosea

Also, a great person to be with for a first time.

He obviously cannot be smoking anymore so he mainly watches over everyone else and observe whatever they do because they're always doing something

Though, if anyone pisses him off he will make them believe there's things that aren't actually there. Sean is the biggest victim of this.

Abigail

After having Jack, she stopped but she was starting to hate the smell and taste anyways. Blunts are the word offenders in her opinion.

If John tries to kiss her after any sesh she immediately slaps him and tells him to brush his teeth.

She'll take an edible with the girls though, after a lot of convincing and Jack put to sleep for the night.

Pearson

The best cook only when fried, it's a little jarring seeing the difference between his sober dishes.

He's like that "so booommmm tiktok" guy

Always so creative with his stuff and it comes out really good.

Everyone cheers when he decides to smoke a bit

Everyone thinks it'll calm her down from being so aggressive. It does not.
