new mairuma fic just dropped
Iruma sat alone at the table, feeling sick to his stomach.
Azz and Amelie had left him to go network. He was glad he had managed to convince them. This was a great opportunity for them, after all.
Now he had some time to think...
(What if Iruma wasn't interrupted with the offer of tea while he was reflecting during chapter 298? What if he was still alone?)
#my spin on ch 298#bc i wanna see him break ^_^#mairuma#fic#cookies writes and cookies wrongs#mairuma spoilers

So this is a genuine question that I hope comes across alright…
As a meta writer, what makes you so confident in knowing the themes of the manga and analyzing it? If you were to look at other analysis that are the opposite and show a different opinion, would you agree with it or now? So when it comes to the MHA ending, with what HK shows and how so many people expected the villains to die, which in the end they did, what made you so fixated on believing that HK was intending for them to live in the end only for him to switch it up. What if it was HK’s intention in the end?
I was on the side of believing the villains would live after seeing the meta blogs on Tumblr that have me hope. So my heart hurts to see what happened. The worst part is previously, I thought they would die but then became confident after reading so many analysis. Unfortunately turns out they did 😭
To be honest, the themes of a manga like BNHA are not that difficult, since Horikoshi is very "loud" about his set-ups. It's not subtle at all - he tends to emphasize his set-up panels and also repeat them several times.
I feel like the "saving villains" storyline was clearly set up with the following moments:
Hawks' attempt and failure at saving Twice
Toga asking "who are saved by heroes / are villains people too"?
Deku's line in 295 - "you looked like you needed saving"
Shoto's line in 298 - "he is me"
Deku in 305 "OFA is meant to save not to kill, I want to save that boy" - which becomes his "win condition"
a whole arc about understanding villains (supposedly)
Ch 342 - weirdo discussion and udon scene
Now, the ending tries to tell you that the villains were "saved" - at least their souls - but ask yourself the questions:
Are you convinced that the villains are truly saved?
Do you feel that there was a satisfying pay-off for the saving themes?
Do you feel like Deku delivered on the "greatest hero" promise?
Do you feel like the new generation did something profoundly different than the previous one and did it believably transform society?
If the pay-off just doesn't seem good enough, it's not because the meta writers did bad analysis, but it's because the writing fell apart in the 3rd act.
When you are in mid-story, it's hard to tell if the narrative is truly off the rails, or it just takes twists and turns. Up until Ch 422, there were ways for a pay-off with the LoV trio and there was a possibility for them to be truly saved. The way 423 ended so abruptly and the whole fandom was like "huh? this was the big finale?" shows that the themes were not implemented convincingly.
And the way Deku became the target of endless memes also shows that the readership did not feel convinced that he surpassed All Might in any meaningful way.
(fwiw, I stopped writing meta towards the end, when it became clear that Hori has failed to deliver the themes he set-up. There is no way to make good predictions on a narrative that has abandoned its themes).

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Okay guys this is kind of ridiculous, I started reading the Harry Potter books with one goal in mind: to prove that the reason it has so many plot holes is because JKR didn't actually plan anything about what happened in the marauder's era.
Not until book three at least and even that isn't really enough information. I have the Scholastic Inc. version of this book with a cover made by headcase design.
But let's start off with a bang!
Most of the information in this book is on Lily Evans and James Potter, which makes complete sense, I'm not going to throw a hissy fit about that.
Here's what we know about Lily:
She has a sister who rejected her named Petunia (ch. 1 pg. 2).
According to Hagrid she was very good at magic (ch. 4 pg. 51, ch. 5 pg. 79).
She turned teacups into rats at home meaning that she broke the underage magic rules (according to petunia ch. 4 pg. 53).
Her parents were very proud to have a witch in the family. (Petunia ch. 4 pg. 53).
She was Head girl (ch. 4 pg. 55)
Was killed on Halloween when Harry was just a year old (ch. 4 pg. 55)
Her eyes were green (ch. 5 pg. 82)
The wand she used was Willow 10 1/4 inches, swishy, and good for charm work (ch. 5 pg. 82). Now if we look at the harrypotter.com page we can find out a little bit more. "Willow is an uncommon wand wood with healing power, and I have noted that the ideal owner for a willow wand often has some (usually unwarranted) insecurity, however well they may try and hide it. While many confident customers insist on trying a willow wand (attracted by their handsome appearance and well-founded reputation for enabling advanced, non-verbal magic) my willow wands have consistently selected those of greatest potential, rather than those who feel they have little to learn. It has always been a proverb in my family that he who has furthest to travel will go fastest with willow" (Harrypotter.com).
She's a very pretty woman with dark red hair and eyes that aren't only the same color but the same shape as Harry's (ch. 12 pg. 208)
She tried to protect Harry and if she hadn't, there's a possibility that Voldemort wouldn't have killed her (ch. 17 pg. 294)
She loved Harry so much that it left its own mark, though not a visible one. (ch. 17 pg. 299)
James Potter:
He was a good for nothing husband who was very unDursleyish (Petunia ch. 1 pg. 2).
He was good at magic according to Hagrid (ch. 4 pg. 51).
He was head boy (ch. 4 pg. 55).
Was killed on Halloween when Harry was just a year old (ch. 4 pg.55).
The reason Voldemort didn't try and get him on his side was because he knew how close the Potter's were to Dumbledore, technically this is also mentioned about Lily but seeing as she was Muggle born I highly doubt that the offer to join the Death Eaters would ever be extended to her so I didn't put this in her section (ch. 4 pg. 55).
His wand was Mahogany, 11 inches, pliable, slightly more powerful than Lily's, and excellent for transfiguration (ch. 5 pg.82). Kay guys I'm not kidding when I say that mahogany isn't listed on Harrypotter.com and I even went to the fandom wiki but all it had was that James potter's wand was made of mahogany as well as a table in the leaky cauldron and the Nimbus 2000.
According to McGonagall he was an excellent quidditch player, however she doesn't say what position he played (ch. 9 pg. 152)
He left his invisibility cloak in the care of someone (who we know is Dumbledore ch. 12 pg. 202).
He was tall, thin, had untidy black hair that stuck up in the back, and he wore glasses (ch. 12 pg. 208).
Severus and James loathed each other (ch. 17 pg. 290).
Voldemort killed him first and he apparently put up a courageous fight (ch. 17pg. 294).
James mainly used the invisibility cloak to sneak into the kitchens and steal food (according to Dumbledore ch. 17 pg. 298).
He saved Snape's life (ch. 17 pg. 300).
Now I'm just barely going to mention that Lily and James were very rarely brought up without the other.
Sirius Black:
I'm honestly shocked that Sirius was even mentioned in the first book, I knew that it was his motorcycle that Hagrid had but I really thought that was going to be something mentioned in later books. however on chapter 1 page 14 Hagrid says "'Young Sirius Black lent it to me.'" From this we know that Sirius was there on the night Harry's parent's died.
Harry later has a dream about a flying motorcycle which I think can either be read as a reference to the night Hagrid flew him to the Dursley's OR as a subtle mention that Sirius was around a lot before Lilly and James died (ch. 2 pg. 19).
So kudos to JKR for having one other character than Harry's parents created.
General information about the marauder's era:
20 years from the beginning of this book Voldemort started looking for followers and found them. Some wanted power others were afraid (ch. 4 pg. 54).
No one ever lived after Voldemort decided to kill them (ch. 4 pg. 55).
Voldemort killed some of the best witches and wizards of the age: McKinnons, Bones, and Prewetts (ch. 4 pg. 56).
According to Hagrid there wasn't a single witch or wizard who went bad that wasn't in Slytherin (ch. 5 pg. 80).
Edited on November 19, 2024, to add chapter numbers.

that's all for now folks!
Thank you for checking my list out! I hope it can help people get through this very good but also extremely time consuming series!! Again, I'm no expert, but I did spend weeks reading and rereading the whole thing to make this. also there's movies, sequels, OVAs, and probably more that I could not include. The best way to view the series is whichever you want, but probably a good mix of everything. Ill update whenever we get new chapters. I tried to keep each description detailed enough to be honest, but vague enough to not spoil. IDK man, I tried my best.

but like also ch 298:guide because of kuroo's role as tsukki's mentor who pushed him kicking and screaming to get better (and like bokuto too but like kuroo yk) and how the end of it is kuroo asking "hey, how do you feel about volleyball now" and tsukki doesn't just say that he likes it, he says "thanks to you- all of you- its fun" and like when he's just wholeheartedly frank and honest it cracks me open like an egg ngl
#tsukishima kei#kuroo testuro#haikyu#haikyuu!!#this current translation is not my favorite phrasing of the quote but oh well#battle of the garbage dump spoilers#why yes i do in fact react to this scene with the same glee as hinata does later to kenmas declaration

Gideon the Ninth Eye Colour/Descriptor Guide (Updated)
(Key: CH stands for Chapter; pg. stands for page; EP stands for Epilogue)
(Harrow the Ninth Guide) (Nona the Ninth Guide)
For more immediate, in-depth reference, the quotes themselves have been transcribed below the cut.
All quoted page numbers are per the paperback copy of the book. Quotes are (mostly) in order of frequency, but some characters are grouped together because I don't want to separate them.
Harrow (24 Entries):
Cytherea (18 Entries):
Ianthe (17 Entries):
(+ BABS) “Because they were in closest proximity, her first gaze after the fight fell on the overgroomed cavalier of the Third, Naberius: his eyes were taut, and his smile was unnerved. His eyes were blue, but this close she could see that they were stained through in places with a light, insipid brown that made Gideon think of oily water.” - Chapter 11, pg. 116 (paperback)
Palamedes (11 Entries):
Jeannemary & Isaac (8 Entries):
Corona (6 Entries):
Gideon (6 Entries):
Camilla (4 Entries):
Colum (4 Entries):
Teacher (4 Entries):
God/John (3 Entries)
“He approached her, and she saw that his sclera were black as space. The irises were dark and leadenly iridescent—a deep rainbow oil slick, ringed with white. The pupils were as glossy black as the sclera.” - Epilogue, pg. 440
“Harrowhark picked herself up off the floor and looked her Emperor dead in his dark and shining eyes.” - Epilogue, pg. 441
“He had a ridiculously ordinary face: long jaw, high forehead, hair a dull and leaden brown. But those eyes.” - Epilogue, pg. 443
Protesliaus (2 Entries):
“Protesilaus the Seventh stared at her with the empty eyes of someone who would watch with equal heavy disinterest if part of the wall were kicked out and she were punted down into the sea, but his adept was looking at her—wistfully.” - Chapter 10, pg. 108
“She had been gravely meeting Protesilaus’s murky stare, as though trying to find something out, and now she settled the head on her lap.” - Chapter 30, pg. 338
Characters With Only 1 Entry Each:
(CRUX) “Crux stared back at her with the hate of an exploding star: the empty hate of pressure pulled inward, a deforming, light-devouring resentment.” - Chapter 2, pg. 31
(ORTUS) “But Ortus said, with his big, sombre eyes and his squashed, disheartened voice: “I do fear death, my Lady Harrowhark.”” - Chapter 3, pg. 41
(MAGNUS) “Up close he had a strong jaw, the expression of the terminally jolly, and nice eyes.” - Chapter 9, pg. 93
(ABIGAIL) “Unlike Magnus, she also had the manner some necromancers and librarians developed when they had been working on dead spells for the last fifteen years and no longer worried too much about the living: her stare was far too intense.” - Chapter 15, pg. 169 & 170
(JUDITH) “The Captain of the Second rose too. Her intensely dark eyes settled on each of them in turn before ending on Teacher.” - Chapter 18, pg. 197
(SILAS) “Silas did not step away, but he turned his head a little from her, as though she were a bad breath. He had very brown eyes, startlingly framed by thick, whitish lashes.” - Chapter 26, pg. 298
