Four Pages to Terrify Me

I applaud thee Endo.

From the illustration alone I was worried, this whole chapter is just laying out what the next arc is likely to be and now has me reevaluating the last few chapters (specifically Sigmund Authen), as well as any image that showed Anya's written name.

From the theming and naming of the families, we know that the Forgers are a fake family built on a lie but developing into something real. The Forgery will be made real (Forged into something real?). That means the family whose name opposes them, the Authens, must be a mirror. A real family filled with emotional lies (or at least a real family that is fake in everything that actually matters).

If I had to present a theory for how the Authens are connected to Anya it'd be that they were involved in her creation. Sigmund is a professor, meaning he could be apart of the team of doctors, who seems to be rather anti-war. Possibly enough so to become involved with human experimentation.

Then there's his mumbling. No one could understand Sigmund but Anya. This comes off as a gimmick, but what if it's his way of testing which of the children at the park he just so happens to be stuck in can understand him? It's a pretty decent strategy to determine an esper child.

Moving onto the subject of the actual chapter: ANIA

For some reason or another, Anya believes her written name to actually be A-N-I-A, pronounced the same way. This is an alternate spelling for the name, but instead of trying to correct Yor or Loid she goes along with the change. Either Anya is trying to distance herself from that version of her name, or she knows that ANIA wasn't technically her name but what she was called. There is a difference.

There is also the fact the doctor in Ch 1 addresses her as 'Anya'. This could be a mistake, or it could mean that the facility we see Anya in the first chapter was different than the lab that created her, seeing as they didn't call her by the moniker Subject 007.

So, I have three theories:

1 - Anya is her real name, as she already has a code name Subject 007, and ANIA is something else. Possibly AN1A, as I've seen others suggest? It has something to do with her creation, possibly the organization or the specific operation behind it.

2 - ANIA is a title or some kind of new species/mutation/classification. Instead of her name being Ania she is an ANIA. The lab calls her Anya in chapter 1 because they made a similar mistake to Twilight, or just for convenience.

3 - ANIA or AN1A is her 'name' given to her by the scientists which is an anagram, acting-alongside Subject 007-as a nickname.

In any case we are very likely to find out whenever the next arc starts and in the end Anya will be Anya. Her and Twilight are connected already for having multiple names, but both of them have shown that Loid Forger and Anya Forger are becoming staples of their core selves. It wouldn't surprise me if Anya declaring her name proudly as Anya Forger to any that try to correct her as an eye opener of some kind for Twilight on the importance of his identity.

Whew! Feeling loads of mixed feelings (mainly good ones!) but wow

Having been held onto like this, Hua Cheng’s eyes were twinkling, and a moment later, he smiled. “I suggest you both hold your tongue and just follow. I’m in a good mood, so I won’t fight you for now.”

This line really caught my attention because it really brings to light how Hua Cheng and White No Face are two parallels in so many ways, and like yes Hua Cheng would never kill Xie Lian and neither would White No Face.....but for very different reasons

Xie Lian shook his head. “It’s not that, San Lang, We’re not the same. He…won’t kill me, I can swear it.”

MY HEART IS ACTUALLY BURSTING WITH EMOTIONS CUZ I CANT THIS IS TOO MUCH FLUFF LIKE OVERDOSE OF FLUFF LIKE TOO MUCH TOOTH ROTTING CUTE FLUFF I LOVE IT SO MUCH I wanna squish them, put them in a little bottle, and just keep them in my pocket

Only with his reminder did Xie Lian recall there was such a thing, and he quickly said, “Wait! The other things aside. San Lang, your…are your ashes properly hidden away?”

“A long time ago,” Hua Cheng replied.

Xie Lian nodded, but after a pause, he still couldn’t help but double check. “Are you sure it’s properly hidden? That place is secure enough? It won’t be found?”

Hua Cheng answered leisurely, “To me, it’s the safest place in the world.”

Xie Lian, however, didn’t think there was anything that was absolute in this world and pressed,

“You’re absolutely sure?”

Hua Cheng smiled cheerfully. “If its hiding place is destroyed, then there’s no need for me to exist either. Of course I’m sure.”

Oooohhhh OK BUT IMAGINE THIS? SO BEAUTIFUL YET HAUNTING and also WTFFFFF????? LANG YING????? NO WONDER HUA CHENG WAS SO APPREHENSIVE OF HIM And also what the hell it's so creepy that he had been with Xie Lian dressed as Lang Ying the whole time....like again back to how White No Face and Hua Cheng mirror each other in that both followed Xie Lian but one did it in such a disturbing and boundary breaking way while the other was so respectful

Under the white veil was a divine statue of him. This was a God-Pleasing Crown Prince statue, a sword in one hand, flower in the other, a smile hung on the face. Only, there was a trace of blood on that smile.

The source of that blood was the sword gripped in its hand. There was a youth pierced upon the blade, his head wrapped full of bandages, his body covered in blood. It was Lang Ying!

Ok but I love love love the imagery here and the underlying message cuz it's like yes White No Face was the one causing trouble, but it was Xie Lian's OWN sword that broke his statue and I feel like this is some heavy metaphor for what is to come....

Xie Lian’s face was instantly paled by a shade, the veins on the back of his hands popped and he slashed with his sword, shouting, “SHUT UP!”

White No-Face sidestepped and avoided the strike, but CLANG! The attack sliced through the sword gripped in the hands of his own divine statue. Now he’d done it; the God-Pleasing Crown Prince statue wielded a broken sword, and the statue itself thus became a ruined artefact. Xie Lian instantly snapped out of it, like he was suddenly drenched by a bucket of cold water.

One of my fave shades of Xie Lian is flustered Xie Lian!

Xie Lian “en, en, en”-ed randomly a couple times, and was just about to run away when Hua Cheng pulled him to a stop, pointing out, “Your Highness! Where are you running to? You’re going in the wrong direction.”

Only then did Xie Lian discover he was running back the way they came and immediately turned back around, even slipping on the ice once. He quickly pressed down on his bamboo hat.

“N-No. I, I’m just a little cold, thought I’d jog around a bit, warm up…”

ALSOOOOO AHHH THE KISSS OH MY GOD IT WAS SO SOFT AND SO GENTLE OH MY GOD I WILL CRY DJDMDKCKFMFMF

See!! Again the similarities are so blazingly obvious and yet Hua Cheng and Xie Lian couldn't be more different. Like one came for safety and protection while one came for pain and distress, and I guess I didn't notice til now since we are finally getting to see White No Face interact and all

White No-Face easily dodged every single one of his strikes, and Xie Lian cried in rage, “Why haven’t you died? WHY DID YOU COME TO THE KILN?”

“Because of you!” White No-Face replied.

Xie Lian’s movement faltered, and he huffed a breath. “What do you mean?”

White No-Face answered languidly, “Because you’ve come. So, I’ve come too.”

Just had a sudden, rather freaky thought. What if White No Face had been with Xie Lian throughout the book (present day) the whole time the same way Hua Cheng had....

WHAT THE FLIPPING HELLL WHAT THE AUDACITY THE ABSOLITE AUDICTY but also that's low key kinda so smart BUT ALSO HOW DARE YOU?!?!?!?

White No-Face lifted his face to look at his eyes, and he said warmly, “Your Highness, I think you might have misunderstood. There certainly will be a Supreme who will emerge from this Kiln, but, it won’t be me. It will be you.”

OH MY GOD HUA CHENG WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU WHAT THE HECK MAN COME BACK QUICK I am so worried for my baby T-T

Then, without giving him a chance to protest, that tragically pale cry-smiling mask melted with the infinite darkness as it was heavily pressed onto Xie Lian’s face.

And with that book 3 = done!!! I'm so excited for book 4 and am ready for whatever comes my way! 😊✨️

long ramble, progress update, & potential release timeframe below:

hii! i got a lot of coding done and i think im finally satisfied with how the game looks (for now…)

here are some screenshots of what some of it will look like on mobile!

the friendship and romance levels shown in the relationship menu are just random as is the blurb for Aesop’s thoughts, they’re just for the example! (also characters thoughts are hidden by default, you click to reveal, then hide, them)

the stat bars were giving me hell but i finally figured them out with the the help of some forums and tumblr posts

i liked how in when twilight strikes by evertidings, the menu buttons (i.e. profile, stats, relationships) are listed at the top of the page so i took inspiration from that! and the many IFs that have a splash (?) screen at the beginning with the title

compared to when i started using twine (i think august 2023 was the first time i gave it a try), i’ve learned so much and there’s still so much to learn as well, i think coding has become my favorite part (making things looks pretty hehe)(with the help of amazing templates & ppl smarter than me, they do the heavy lifting fr)

with all the coding done (appearance wise) it’s lock in time for the revised prologue and chapter 1

the prologue has undergone a fair bit of change with the help of feedback & i’ve (hopefully) better established the setting and story.

some things that have changed besides wording and sentence structure, etc.: being able to choose what you did as a job (ex. working at the family inn) and meeting a new character (more like an old friend?)(no spoilers:))

some things i’ve been considering (SLIGHT SPOILER FOR CH.1 MAYBE): merging the revised prologue and chapter 1 into just the prologue bc chapter 1 differs a bit from the other chapters, but then the prologue would maybe be too strange timeframe wise? it’s a time skip after the events of the prologue (is that considered a spoiler, i don’t think so but???) that connects to the next chapters so maybe it’d just be better as its own chapter? or dropping the revised prologue by itself along with the updated ui/appearance then chapter 1 sometime after, or dropping the revised prologue and chapter 1 together, idk these are all just ideas i’ve been thinking about maybe i’ll do a poll

if you have anything you’d like to see, for example a specific job your MC worked, certain personality traits, or something like that, feel free to let me know & i’ll take them into consideration! i think now is the best time to add things bc it’s early development days & it’ll be easier to do so now than later

i’ve also decided to lean a little more into the supernatural aspect which i’m excited for (one specific thing really, i can’t wait to get to it🤭) the story’s world itself is fairly grounded in reality (as in the supernatural is unknown to most) but i’m looking forward to exploring it more

what you’re probably reading this for: depending on how i end up going about the prologue-chapter 1 merge decision & whether anything is added from requests/feedback, i’m aiming for a june release, july at the latest (fingers crossed). now that the appearance and function coding is complete (besides stat/choice tracking & other story related things), finishing the writing and coding it in is all that’s left

my schedule has done a 180 & some things are less than ideal at moment but it should all (hopefully) go smoothly from here! should anything change, i’ll let you all know

YOSHIDA THEORY, SPOILERS FOR CH 180 AHEAD

To start off with, the theory is actually REALLY simple; Yoshida is the "human" that escaped Aging's forest.

We don't know how time passes in this world, so "a long time ago" could be just a few years on our perspective. Or hey, they could even just return to the time from when they left the forest.

Second point: The tree and background. On the Yoshida illustration seen at the top of this post and the opening shot of Yoru being in the forest, the background is really similar.

Bushes, tree texture at the start. I might be delusional but it's just a theory

But my final, most important point is Yoshida's relationship with Aging. At first it's just his point about aging, but Aging does directly compliment Yoshida as if they have respect for him.

And that's all. I might find some more evidence and do a follow up on the new chapter soon.

spoilers for ch 51 of sasaki to miyano so like. read at your own risk but oh my god I can’t stop thinking about the construction of this chapter. this volume in general actually bc harusono is a good writer and that means that when a chapter it’s something it’s actually a culmination of things. deep breath. okay.

so. a lot of volume 10 deals with these odd, wordless senses of jealousy from both sasaki and miyano. sasaki when he sees miyano and shirahama chatting after their chance encounter, and miyano when he sees sasaki and ugawa. I think it’s critical that these friendships are ones that catch their attention, because they’re both ones that develop outside of the context of sasaki and miyano’s high school relationship. shirahama makes an actual proper appearance in ch 41 and becomes a named character in ch 42–sasaki graduates in ch 39. ugawa, obviously, is sasaki’s university friend. so for these two people, seeing them represents this feeling of change and distance they haven’t quite grappled with.

but miyano does verbalize something in ch 51, and it’s that he’s selfish. that he wants to be the person making sasaki happy. that’s why it’s so important that he catches sasaki laughing because of ugawa. because we’ve established that sasaki’s often curt, often apathetic, and so it’s Only around miyano that he makes that 180 into total cute sweetness. but obviously that’s not how humans work, right? some of that warmth they share is going to bleed out. anyways. it’s no coincidence that miyano introspects with himself about the selfishness of relationships, of love, the same chapter that shirahama carries his boxes and tells him to go to the nurses’ office. runs before he can be thanked. offered his umbrella in previous chapters. made a blueprint for miyano’s clumsy hands.

it’s something potent, I think… the weird selflessness that’s almost easier in unrequital, and the way a relationship is not the same thing as love.

Silver lining here, but at least Denji's getting a nap.

Also, ch 180 reveals the trap that Aging Devil was setting for all of those old men in power gambling with the lives of children. I think Fujimoto lulled some of us into forgetting, just like Asa forgot, that devils don't make fair deals. The house always wins. The ones with power never really share it.

Ch. 180. Epilogue spoilers

THIS MADE NO FUCKING SENSE THE FIRST TIME AROUND SO I BRUSHED IT OFF AND FORGOT ABOUT IT. It's so strange how this situation was saved just because those two happened to wander into this specific scene

Since this establishes how things happening in the epilogue effect things in the story, I think I finally came to an answer on who is the Oldest Dream that watches over the 1864th found. It's 51%. The teenager Oldest Dream is just a completely separate guy from YJH's sponsor. So then in scenes where YJH's sponsor sends indirect messages and KDJ cusses him out, it's just KDJ yelling at his future self. 51% knows what's going to happen anyways so that bit when they fight Surya and YJH almost regresses, he should have known how that played out. Did he offer to use the stigma in order to fulfill time loop duties or did he weaken enough that he couldn't really tell anymore and was just mentally a child watching an interesting story for the first time again? That part in Dark Castle when YJH asked what happens to the world after he dies, 51% answered him? When the possibility of a group regression came up, was that 51% too? Maybe it was at this point that he realized he couldn't stop his companions from saving him and started scattering himself.

One Hell of A Missed Translation

In ch 180, Bard is convinced he’s dying of starvation and if Sebastian isn’t a hallucination, or an enemy soldier, he must be a reaper.

However, Sebastian corrects him explaining he isn’t a reaper but a butler.

In the official translation we get:

But the original Japanese says:

In the left panel, Sebastian says:

私はあくまで執事です���ら

Watashi wa akumade shitsuji desukara

This statement means what the English translation says: “I’m simply a butler,” since “akumade” means “simply.”

However, Yana loves wordplay, and the statement is a pun, since akuma means demon, so the sentence can be read also as “I’m a demon and a butler.”

Hence the English catchphrase:

“I am simply one hell of a butler.”

As a result, and based on how he’s smirking, I think the pun was intended and the translation should have used his cheesy catchphrase instead of the more literal translation.

Especially as this was the 15th anniversary chapter, I think that’s a huge shame and I hope they change it for the volume release later.
