We knew it was gonna be a day because we were gonna see The Little Lies at The Bite of Seattle and we hadn't been to the Bite so long ago I can't remember.
It was an even bigger day than we imagined because, turns out, it was a HUGE day for Seattle.
For Seattle?
Yeah. Three departing cruise ships. A Storm game. A Mariners game. The Capitol Hill block party.  The Bite of Seattle, of course. And the first of two Taylor Swift concerts.
The city was packed.
We at least, had the good sense to not drive to the Seattle Center. That would've been madness. Instead we drove to Northgate and caught the light rail to Westlake Center. The light rail station at Northgate, by the way, is where we remembered the Taylor Swift concert as her fans dominated the station platform from one end to the other. They made for quite a sight.
From Westlake Center we took an elevator to the Monorail platform three(ish) floors up and rode the Monorail to the Seattle Center, something we also hadn't done in so long I can't remember. But, if I had to guess, it would be whenever the last time was we took Linzy and her high school friends to the Center to shoot a music video.
We arrived at the Fountain Stage around 630, gotta chance to say hi to Linzy as the previous band finished their set, then headed off in search of food which was kind of a bust 'cause the app didn't work on my phone so we went to the Center House, got in line, and then it was like well... this is taking long and the show's about to start so we got out of line even though Kimmer was super hungry and, on our way back to Fountain Stage, we scored a large bag of popcorn that, by all measures, was a small bag of popcorn.
So that was dinner at The Bite of Seattle.
Go figure.
We did get back in time for the start of The Little Lies show, sat down on the grass with a fellow Little Lies fan and, you know, ate our popcorn.
Which brings me to how different the Little Lies crowd experience was this time around. For example, the performances we've been to so far—which I think is about 90% of all their gigs since the beginning—normally features crowds packed to the front of the stage. The only time this isn't so is Olympia's Summer Nights at the Port and Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery where a space is naturally left in front of the stage for people (a lot of people) to dance. In both cases, the crowds skew older: people who grew up with Fleetwood Mac in the seventies.
With this year's Bite of Seattle, however, the crowd skewed younger, mostly families with children as well as twenty- and thirty-somethings also leaving a large area open in front of the stage. The families with children were the first ones we spied dancing with their kids. And when parents eventually sat back down on the grass, their children would continue dancing, often finding dance partners with other children who were there or dragging a sibling out onto the grass with them. There were, of course, older fans who naturally took to the grassy dance floor. But what really struck me were the twenty- and thirty-somethings who sang along, seated on the grass, even though I know Fleetwood Mac fans span generations. Somehow, the reality of that fact always surprises me. It was soon apparent, though, age wasn't the only measure of diversity in this Fleetwood Mac versed audience. There was a diversity of race. And not everyone there was from America.
And yet they all knew the songs.
Now, most of the performances at the Bite of Seattle except for the headliners are forty minutes in length. The Little Lies, however, scored an hour and a half at the end of Saturday. An hour and a half that started with the crowd from the previous band and grew to fill the available space. In fact, with twenty minutes left in the set, I ran up to the front of the stage to grab some of the most iconic Fleetwood Mac songs for YouTube: "Gold Dust Woman" and "Tusk". And while my back was turned from the audience, the audience numbers surged behind me so that I had to actually navigate my way back to Kimmer when the two songs were done. Then I navigated again to the front of the stage once I realized there was still time for a performance of "The Chain" and, during the two times I swung my camera around at the audience, I could see everyone was on their feet. There was even a young woman on the shoulders of her husband or boyfriend a few feet behind me, thoroughly engaged with the music and The Little Lies performance.
So yeah. It was a straight up rock concert. The only difference from the ones of old I grew up with being the smart phones actively capturing video of the band's enthusiastic performance.
Now... that's only the crowd I'm talking about. As for The Little Lies themselves, they were all over this music. They were feelin' it. The passion. The emotion. The joy. The fun. The epic nature of the song.
They were feeling all of it live, on stage, and the audience couldn't get enough.
And then me, at the front of the stage on the lead guitarist's side, I'm looking up at The Little Lies with their wild onstage energy and I realize that, from the angle I'm watching, their background is the Space Needle, from its knees to the top of its head, bathed in the last rays of the day's sunlight.
So yeah, of course. All of it—all of it—really is a helluva thing to experience.
After the show, we're all gathering up our stuff to call it a night and chat with Linzy before we head home when I hear it. More than once.
Hear it?
Yeah. The sound of someone asking What's the name of that band?
The Little Lies.
What's the name of the band?
The Little Lies.
Wow. Yeah.
We had a great night.
☺️☺️☺️

I don’t like minimizing the importance and gravity of Laios and Toshiro’s fight into just being a childish squabble, even if to a degree it is framed that way, because to both of them it has a lot of personal significance and emotional weight and runs very deep to their characters… The fight isn’t nothing it’s a LOT, they made up but it’s not something easy to express and to get over for either of them which makes it all the more meaningful! I’m on both sides but there very much are sides, there’s no "they’re both having a ball, Toshiro and Laios hand in hand yay" side to the fight, that comes after
The fight with Toshiro WAS very scary to Laios, almost existentially so, but it’s moreso the "I thought I’d made a friend!!" bit and my god. My god actually
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like it’s not "just" about oh his friend liking him less than he thought, THAT IS SO MUCH. It’s a bond he thought he had being a lie it’s all the time and moments spent together either being a lie from his perspective or marred now looking back. It’s not only being upset at Toshiro for lying but upset at himself that he’s so easy to fool, it’s being upset that there’s something so wrong with you that you can’t even tell if your "close buddy" even actually likes you or not, it’s like. Holding my head. He can’t trust his own vision of events that happened do you see. There’s always this film of distrust that it could be a lie that should be there when he interacts with people there’s always this sense of cloak and dagger to expect backstabs out of nowhere because you CAN’T see it coming you CAN’T you CAN’T there’s something about you which makes it impossible so you CAN’T-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s so scared of not being able to read people. He knows it’s a weak spot he has, he’s always known. All of these bits are centered around social expectations and betrayals, the assumption that he doesn’t belong either in society or with other humans.
And Laios’ level of awareness is actually sort of complex to analyze, but it’s there, there’s how out of him and Falin he was the one sensitive to the ~aura of hatred~ he felt from the townspeople, there’s of course his nightmares whispering to him about the mocking looks, and how yeah actually he realizes that his gold stripper coworker was taking advantage of him. There’s of course the Winged Lion speech about his trauma and how he fundamentally mistrusts/dislikes humans to some deep seated degree, this distrust that he still keeps under control always. There’s how pre-canon he often wanted to suggest eating monsters but never worked up the courage to bring it up with the others. There’s how he gets across as stoic when he isn’t being enthusiastic…… We don’t know how aware and wary he is exactly in the moment but we do know he has some anxiety around social stuff, and looking back he does notice and aughh augh, the sense you have to hide yourself to not get hurt and be on your guard and shit and.
When you don’t know what to look out for and when to look out for it, the general ‘common sense’ of not always trusting people or noticing when someone’s messing with you becomes hypervigilance in social settings
Tumblr media
"Man they really know what you hate huh". Being socially unaware literally plagues him, he knows, he knows it so well.
It’s so quick that it’s almost hard to digest how literal and blatant Laios summoning his monster to crush all the people who’ve hurt him is. His literal go-to coping mechanism for comfort in his literal monster-induced emotionally intense nightmares, saving him by taking away the upsetting element (the humans)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Monsters are his coping fantasy, where they can whisk him away from humanity, all the hurt it’s caused him and its arbitrary rules" with the subtlety of a brick. Monsters are his comfort safe zone "because they kill humans" yes but no it’s because he pits them as the guardians against humans who to him are in the role of the agressors. To him they represent freedom from the shackles of what it means to be part of humanity, a fundamentally social species

Thinking about Cuddy.
House is a genius. I’ve written about how Wilson is equally talented.
But Cuddy is, too.
One of three(?) female deans of medicine in the country. One of the youngest. And every time the spotlight turns onto her, she does things no one else can do.
She has a kid by herself. Wilson points out that a man in her position would have a wife, two nannies AND two assistants. (She tries to hire an assistant and the job is so demanding they quit regularly.)
She consistently gets things for the hospital no one else can get and is the trump card only she can play. In 5 to 9, she gets (I think) 7%, which is far and away better than her opponent, her board, or anyone else but her thought she could get.
In season 1, iirc it’s implied SHE brings in Vogler, and she’s the only person who can stop him when he starts tearing the entire hospital apart to get at House.
In season 3, she ends the nonsense with Tritter.
She’s also the only person who can and will keep House on her team (no one will hire House or Foreman, other than her). And she’s the only person who can wrangle him, canonically (I disagree with canon, but Cameron does hand the reigns back to Cuddy with this exact statement). Moreover, she makes House an ASSET. In 5 to 9, she explains that PPTH is on the cutting edge, which includes their world famous ddx department.
And! Despite the fact that House routinely accuses her of being an administrator and not a doctor anymore, she still successfully treats patients from time to time. She helps ddx the babies in Maternity. She saves her patient’s baby in Fetal Position. In s5 Joy, she clocks that something is wrong with the mom when no one else does, and pushes until the diagnosis is made and saves both their lives. She figures out the diagnosis in Joy to the World at the same time as House, and is so kind and respectful to the folks caring for the baby, yet still makes sure she gives the baby what she needs.
I have to admit that I don’t remember s7-8 well enough to go through those, but it’s clear to everyone that Cuddy is a great doctor. Much like Wilson, she gets dismissed in part bc she gets too emotionally involved. And it’s also clear that no one really understands her work or how good she is at it. Everyone only sees their part, and she has to see all of it and make it all fit together, making sure everyone gets what they need. Her ability to flip between caring and hardass undermines her ability to seem tough, but it’s also necessary. If she couldn’t care, she wouldn’t take such good care of her people or patients. If she couldn’t toughen up, she’d let people walk all over her. It’s a unique style, and not without its pitfalls, but it’s all hers.
And like Wilson, she doesn’t get seen as a genius. In fact, she barely gets acknowledged as smart at all. A lot of her successes come from charisma and social intelligence. And those things often get dismissed in women, especially women who care as deeply and obviously as Cuddy does. The ability to juggle so many things gets dismissed as “basically being well-organized,” and also, no one really SEES what she does. It sometimes takes her a minute, but she reads people like THAT. She figures out and outwits that sociopathic drug dealer. She sees through most of House’s lies. She often settles with plaintiffs because of guilt, but she also often talks them out of suing the hospital in the first place.
Cuddy is just as good, and just as brilliant, at her job as House and Wilson. But she doesn’t get seen as a genius anymore than Wilson does.

Woke: Alhaitham sold his grandmother's house and moved into the research center because he didn't like living in an empty home with so many memories.
Also woke: Alhaitham sold his grandmother's house and moved into the research center because it was the last remaining tie he had to Kaveh, and taking ownership of it ensured that Kaveh would have to communicate with him again at least one more time.

one of my favorite parts of speculating ahead of the Veilguard is the number of people talking themselves around and around in the loop of "Illario is extremely suspicious and the most obvious choice for who betrayed Lucanis → However, Illario seems like he genuinely cares for Lucanis and seemed sincerely distraught in The Wake → I know in my heart it must be Illario: there is no one else with means and motive → If Illario did it, I understand why given how Caterina has treated him and them, and he has arguably earned a bit of a villain era → The situation is ultimately caused by Caterina and Crow politics and, again, Caterina → I don't want it to be Illario because I want he and Lucanis to have a good relationship given all they've suffered together → However, there is already an existing bitterness between them because of the succession question and in Illario generally because he's seen as lesser → Illario is the most obvious choice"
#so many of us are like it's gotta be Illario I don't want it to be Illario it makes sense it's Illario#It's like... it's a tragic situation because no matter what—even if it is Illario—the root cause is Caterina and she's already dead.#Speaking for myself. *I* keep doing this loop bc even if it was Illario it's hard with what we know so far for me to hold it against him?#Yes he had different choices. Obviously he could have done anything else. But like it isn't just ambition and spite.#Assuming it is him [points at the loop] it feels like a situation fostered by the way Caterina raised and hurt them both.#What methods do you feel you have when the only thing you know is knives and murder?#How else to feel when the cousin you love like a brother eventually convinces himself he doesn't hate the grandmother who ruined you both?#She is only “Caterina” in your mouths and you are “cousin” in his but he is choosing her over you and how else is there to feel?#After all: she's sharpened all your emotions into knives. They're only ever knives.#ANYWAY that got away from me there for a second#I think that's why we're doing this loop. It's gotta be Illario but it being Illario resolves little. It's not a complete catharsis.#It's really the facts of their lives. It's really what Caterina did to them. It's really the yawning pit at the center of House Dellamorte.#Illario Dellamorte#Lucanis Dellamorte#Caterina Dellamorte#Dragon Age: The Veilguard#Dragon Age The Veilguard#Dragon Age#DATV things#DATV spoilers#Veilguard spoilers

Everything I learn about Rose Wilder Lane makes me more and more aware that she was a hilariously outrageous person who needs a movie made about her immediately.
After leaving Missouri, she moves to California and marries a real-estate guy who once tried to get her to help him con the railroad.
She gets hired at a San Francisco newspaper known for its yellow journalism, where she does things like writing a series of columns featuring the "real-life stories of a police detective" who, in real life, was a high-end jewel thief.
Her first book is a first-person "autobiography" of Charlie Chaplin that she (after a few interviews with Chaplin) completely made up, and that Charlie Chaplin immediately threatened to sue her publisher for.
Her second book is a biography of Jack London, which his wife only reluctantly allowed her to write because Rose presented herself as "someone who had never written for the newspapers before and needs a chance to break into the magazines." This book was also almost entirely fictional, and her publisher also almost got sued over it.
Third biography is the first-ever biography of Herbert Hoover, also a heavily-fictionalized account. (Doesn't seem to have been sued for this one. Steps in the right direction!)
Traveled as a reporter through Europe (to places like Albania and Poland) post-WWI. (If we want to talk about legal things that she did).
Wrote a book based on Laura's late-childhood pioneer experiences while Laura was writing the early books of the Little House series, and did not tell Laura about it. (Laura was ticked off).
Kept trying to insert a story into Laura's memoirs (and Little House on the Prairie) casting Pa as a member of a posse that hunted down the infamous (and never-caught) serial-killing Bender family (despite the fact that this was historically impossible). (It got to the point that Laura herself told this story to the public as an example of "a true story I couldn't out in my children's book." Despite the fact, I say again, that this was historically impossible).
During WWII, endured a minor incident (it involved one cop coming to her house) where the FBI investigated her as a potential communist based on a postcard she sent that was critical of the government. Turned this into a short story that presented herself as the righteously-outraged American citizen fighting against an oppressive government, and used this to whip up a nationwide media campaign against J. Edgar Hoover for spying on American citizens.
Flew to Vietnam as a war reporter when she was in her seventies.
