I happen to be in LA for a few days, so I paid a quick visit to one of the most star-studded cemeteries, Westwood Village Memorial Park.

By the way, the sod over John Cassavetes' and Lady Rowlands' side-by-side graves was obviously different than the rest of the lawn, as if their plot had recently been opened and then re-covered. So I'm positive that Gena Rowlands is buried there next to her husband and her mother, even though there's no marker for her yet.

Pierce Brothers Westwood Memorial Park, 1218 Glendon Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90024

This is one of the smallest and most hidden cemeteries that I’ve ever visited. You can walk right by and not notice it. Look for the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park sign on Glendon and follow the arrows. The cemetery is flat with a grassy lawn area surrounded by above ground crypts. There’s a garden area towards the back with a combination of crypts and in-ground graves.

Most people probably come here to see Marilyn Monroe. She’s buried in an above ground crypt right next to Hugh Hefner.

Many celebrities are interred here, including Armand Hammer, Burt Lancaster, Truman Capote, Jackie Collins, Eva Gabor, Don Knotts, Ray Bradbury, Karl Malden, Kirk Douglas, Carroll O’Connor, George C. Scott, Walter Matthau, John Cassavetes, Billy Wilder, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk, Merv Griffin, Rodney Dangerfield, Farrah Fawcett, Natalie Wood, Dorothy Stratten, and Florence Henderson.

There are a few private areas (not open to the public). A few of the celebrities interred here are in unmarked graves, including Roy Orbison, Frank Zappa, and George C. Scott.

The cemetery doesn’t look that amazing but it’s nice and well-maintained.

How to find Joe Meek’s grave

I don’t know if any one’s interested but in case other people would also like to pay Joe Meeks grave a visit sometime, here are the infos I had to google myself together (and the more time consuming and annoying part of finding him on the graveyard)

Adress: Newent Cemetery, Watery Lane GL18 1QG, Newent, Forest of Dean district, Gloucestershire

Bus: 32 from Gloucester transport hub (opposite of entrance railway station) to Newent (about 25min), bus stop: the co-op go a few meters back into the direction the bus arrived from ,first street on the left is already Watery Lane, just follow Watery Lane for about 10 min. Just when you walked by the Newent community school, the graveyard is on the right side, you should also see the top of the gate building from the street.

Joe’s grave: When you’re through the gate-building, there are two diagonal walkways dividing the graveyard in three areas, Joes grave is in the middle area There’s also a horizontal walkways in about the middle of the cemetery, the grave is in the ninth row behind the walkway. It’s on the seventh plot counting from the right walkway (although not all of the plots currently have gravestones on them but it’s a grid layout so you can count from the rows in front)

Please bring Joe some flowers, he was such a brilliant music/audio engineering pioneer, should be a queer icon tbh and after all he went through at least he deserves that. He shouldn’t be forgotten in a graveyard in some backwater town. I’d do it more often myself but sadly I don’t live in the UK. And an idea I’d like to pitch to my fellow little queers: can we make it a thing to leave Joe lipstick kisses on his gravestone like we do with Oscar Wilde?

Have you visited all these celebrity graves? I've obviously visited some of them – several I visited just today – but not all.

Maybe next time I come to LA, I should visit Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills for the first time, and see Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher's tomb and Judith Barsi's grave, among others.
