CW: miscarriage, infertility, endometriosis, mention of blood (menstrual) NOTES: march is endometriosis awareness month and as someone also in the process of being diagnosed with endo, i really wanted to take some time out of my busy uni schedule to write this one and post it this month. if you've requested something and i haven't answered to your request yet, it means i'm still in the process of writing it, i'll eventually get through my inbox haha but in the meantime i hope you enjoy this one. i mostly based the headcanons on my personal experience as well as some more commonly known facts about endo. also i'm more comfortable writing about the batboys with the reader being batmom, sorry if this wasn't exactly what was expected but i just can't see dick, jason, tim and damian as a romantic partner like they are my children frl frl. i was going with headcanons at first but then it turned too much into a story idk it's a little weirdly made but i think still nice to read?

You grew up always wanting a big family, with a few children running around your house, but your dreams were shattered when you were diagnosed with endometriosis after having a miscarriage. The screams and sobs that came out of your body when the doctor told you that carrying a pregnancy (if you were able to get pregnant at all) would be pretty risky haunted Bruce for a long time. A year later, you tried to get pregnant by IVF, but this didn’t work either and you had completely given up on the idea of pregnancy, there was only so much heartbreak you could take. When Bruce and you witnessed the death of the Flying Graysons, Bruce at first was reluctant to suggest to you the idea of adopting their son Dick. After the failed in vitro attempt and your mutual decision to stop trying to get pregnant, you hadn’t really spoken about adoption and he wasn’t sure this was something you’d be open to, so your husband was pretty surprised when you were the one to suggest to adopt Dick. As the years went by, more and more children joined the Wayne Manor and your dream of having a big family with a few children running around your house came to life.

Living with endometriosis was no easy feat. Some days you were in so much pain you couldn’t even get out of bed. You were physically and mentally exhausted for at least a week every month, and even though your job allowed you to work from home, your sixty year old male boss who had no understanding of women’s health eventually fired you. When that happened, Bruce was about ready to march into that old man’s office and get you your job back, but you decided to instead appreciate the privilege you were given by being married to a billionaire CEO and become a stay-at-home wife. Shortly after your diagnostic, Bruce started a charity to fund medical research for women’s health, particularly for conditions touching the reproductive system like endometriosis and PCOS, so once you were out of your old job, you decided that there was no better way to spend your time than by getting involved with the charity.

You were lucky to have an understanding husband who was constantly at your beck and call. Whenever your period was about to start and your endometriosis symptoms worsened, he would do simple things like drawing you a hot bath to help soothe your muscles and shorten his night patrols as Batman so he could come back to bed earlier and serve as your personal heating pad. He would rub CBD oil on your joints and your lower back to relieve some pain and it goes without saying that he tracked your periods not only to anticipate the times when he needs to be more at home than work to care for you but also when you’re more comfortable to have sex, seeing as dyspareunia (painful intercourse) was one of your most unwanted symptoms. It surprised him at first, he didn’t know this was a possible thing, but the two of you worked together to find positions that were more comfortable and less painful for you, and he didn’t take any offence if you needed to stop mid session. After all, Bruce only had your comfort at the forefront of his mind and always reassured you whenever you felt inferior for not being able to have intercourse with your husband.

Alfred read up on ways to improve life with endometriosis through your diet and made sure you never ran out of raspberry leaf tea which helped with your pelvic pain a little. He started incorporating omega-3 fatty acids in your meals and had you snacking on vegetables and trail mix in between. As the kids started appearing in your life, they each happily took the role of being your personal cuddly heating pad until they became teenagers and went through that phase where getting hugs and kisses from your mother was too cringy for them (except for Jason, the hottest furnace out of your kids and the biggest Mama’s boy). Dick, your little flexible acrobat, helped you do 30 minutes long yoga sessions every day to help reduce your pain and increase your energy levels. Tim made sure you were drinking enough water – “Well Mom, the studies say that you need to drink five tall glasses of water per day, so drink up!” – and he was always staying up to date with medical magazines and research to find new ways to improve your life.

When Bruce and Dick returned from one of their patrols with a German Shepherd dog and nobody had claimed him after an ad was put in the paper, Bruce decided to have Ace trained to help you with your anxiety and depression spells that came during your premenstrual period. The big dog was an addition to the family that you never had thought of but you were more than pleased to have him. When your husband was at work and your boys were at school, Ace would jump in your bed and lay his head on your belly or let you cuddle him for as long as you wanted, always there to soothe you and keep your belly warm. 

Damian’s arrival in your life had not been easy. It opened old wounds, and for a moment there you had convinced yourself that your husband would have a moment of clarity and leave you to be with someone who could give him biological children. After talking it out through the night and Bruce reassuring you over and over again that he wasn’t going to leave you and that he was more than happy with the family you had together, he realised that maybe you hadn’t really come to terms with your fertility problems. A week later, he suggested that you see a therapist to help you with the psychological load that came with your condition and that you should also join a group for people with endometriosis who would better understand your pain and struggle. At first you were reluctant, thinking Bruce had had enough and wanted to relieve himself from the burden of supporting you, but your kids made you see that this would be beneficial for everyone, that you can never have too many support systems and the lived experiences of other people with endometriosis could also help your family find better ways to help and support you.

Once Damian warmed up to you, which took more than a few months, he was basically fighting Jason to be your personal cuddly heating pad. He loved your motherly affection and his favourite way to pass time was watching your favourite sitcom in your bed with you and Ace. One time, you unexpectedly started bleeding during the night and left a pretty big red stain on your white sheets. After making sure you were comfortable in your hot bath, Bruce gathered your bedsheets and went to bring them to the laundry room. It just so happened that Damian was getting out of his bedroom at the same time as his father and when he saw the blood on the sheets, he immediately assumed the worst and jumped on Bruce, ready to avenge you. Damian knew that you had menstruations every month, that they were the cause for your pain, but he didn’t know that they caused you to bleed this much. Thankfully, Tim, who knew you were supposed to be on your period soon, was coming up to your room to bring you your first water bottle of the day and managed to pull small Damian off of Bruce. While your third son took care of bringing the sheets to the laundry room downstairs, your husband guided Damian through your bedroom and made him stop in the doorway of the adjacent bathroom, where they could see your head poking out of the bathtub, your eyes closed as you tried to let the warm water and your favourite Leonard Cohen album soothe you. “See,” he leaned down to Damian’s height and gently told him, “Mom’s doing alright. Well, as alright as she can when she’s on her period, but she’s alive. She loses a lot of blood when she’s on her period, that’s one of the reasons why she’s so tired.”

After every laparoscopy, you'd wake up to find Bruce and your boys in your room, sat there waiting to bring you back home from the hospital. Everyone was at your beck and call, the boys mostly helped you get out of bed and walk each day to improve your blood flow. Tim was even more insisting with your water intake to prevent dehydration and everyone ate your post laparoscopy diet of plain rice and broiled chicken to avoid upsetting your stomach the first two days after the surgery so you wouldn’t feel alone in your boring diet. When you weren't out of bed doing your daily walk with one of your kids, they were all knocking at your bedroom door every fifteen minutes, making sure you were comfortable and didn’t need anything else. Bruce, who had mastered the art of bandage through his Batman activities, checked on your incision every morning and every night for any infection or if it had opened up, then cleaned it with soapy water and applied some gauze over it to prevent it rubbing against your clothes.

And every month you found yourself crying at least once, overwhelmed with how grateful you were to have a strong and loving support system helping you live with your condition.

"As you can probably imagine, this time I didn't mind so much that the music refused to be turned off. The sonic released me and let me get control over my own feet again, but I could hear it flying around the room and zipping in and out of earshot. I may have done some quite embarrassing dancing with it as I turned the engines on, and the screens and the controls burst into life.

   "Then I had a look out the window and realised the ship was exactly where I left it. In 1813."

   Rogue looked straight at the Doctor to get his point across. Going by the Doctor's eyebrows, which shot suddenly upwards, the implication seemed to have been clear.

   "Oh my god, we completely forgot to move it. It's just been sitting there in the middle of that garden. See this is the problem with cloaking." The Doctor lightly hit Rogue's arm with the back of his hand. "Out of sight out of mind!"

   "How often do entire spaceships slip your mind?" Rogue laughed.

   "Hey, I was a mess, okay?" the Doctor said, holding his hand up in the air in front of him. "Wasn't I, Ruby?"

   "Oh, he was all over the place. Reverting to all sorts of bad coping mechanisms," said Ruby.

   "Aw, that's sweet," said Rogue.

   "Yeah, well, I was never going to remember an invisible ship in that sort of a state," said the Doctor. His feigned indignance was so funny, so adorable. Rogue hadn't properly laughed since that very night, the night he met the Doctor.

   "So anyway, I had figured out neither of you were from 1813, but I wasn't sure when I was aiming for. I'd heard Ruby mention something called 'Bridgerton' though, so I had a look through the ship's interdimensional streaming service for a TV show or a film or a book of that name. The resemblance to the party was uncanny, if that's what the Chuldur were aiming for. I watched a couple of episodes while I relaxed and got used to travelling the stars again. Then I rewatched 1995 Pride and Prejudice because why not."

   "Time travelling Netflix, very nice," said the Doctor.

   "So that got me to the twenty-first century," said Rogue. "Then I just sort of… looked for trouble. I figured either you'd be somewhere causing chaos or putting a stop to it."

   "Aw that's how Donna did it! Love Donna," said the Doctor. "She found me by spotting a dodgy, unexplained pill that popped up on the market. She got involved and snooped around the company because she knew I'd be curious about it too."

   "Donna's Rose's mum, right?" said Ruby.

   "Yep. You think you're legendary, Ruby Sunday? Remind me to tell you about the Legend of Donna Noble, Runaway Bride, Best Temp in Chiswick, Metacrisis Doctor-Donna, Mother Protector of Rose," said the Doctor. He smiled and whipped his head from side to side as if he was basking in sunlight.

   "Who's Rose?" said Rogue.

   "My niece," said the Doctor. "Sort of. Well, she's definitely a niece, the question is whether I count as the uncle."

   "What?" said Rogue.

   "Long story," said the Doctor.

   "Ooookay," said Rogue. "Anyway, what I found was octopi. On land. Strangling people. There were loads of news reports about it. So I landed my ship and cloaked it in a nice big park just out east from the city centre, and followed the octopi."

   "Sounds so simple when you put it that way," said the Doctor.

   "You know, you say that, but do you have any idea how many blue police shed things there are in this city? One of them was selling CBD oil!" Rogue exclaimed. He rubbed his hands over his face. "I had no food in my ship, barely any water as you can see, and I have spent the past five hours running around this stupid city hoping to see the two of you but stumbling into tiny shed-based businesses instead! I don't even have any of this century's currency loaded up so no ice cream from the ice cream shed for me!"

Someone on TripAdvisor has made a little gallery. For some reason one of them is actually red, as Sylvester McCoy recently discovered. The one in the Merchant City area has Pride stickers!

Also I've decided I like the fact Rogue knows about D&D but not cosplay so now he's a massive Jane Austen fan (as you may have noticed by his references to Emma Woodhouse) but hadn't heard of Bridgerton before.

Duncan, 

I don't go to therapy, but Bridgette does, and she told me about this exercise her therapist set her where you write down everything you want to say to someone in a letter and then you don't send it. Therapy would take up way too much of my time, yet here I am on my bed, writing to you of all people.

It's been years since we last saw each other, or even spoke - since they carted you off the island and tossed you into some disgusting cell. I'm sure you're already aware, but destroying Chris's house was a really  stupid  idea. I understand that you were trying to prove your "villain status" or whatever, but all I could think about watching you leave was DJ and his rabbit. It made me feel  sick,  seeing what happened to you. Gwen and I pretended to be happy about it, but I don't think either of us were at all. 

I know she called once or twice, while you were in there. I know Geoff and DJ came to visit you. I know Bridgette sent you little care baskets through the mail.

I know I never did any of those things. It all hurt so much, still. And even when it didn't, I never figured out what I would say to you.

But now, I have an idea. More or less.

However angry I was with you after you and Gwen kissed, it didn't mean I wanted to see you thrown in  prison.  I know I can be petty and vengeful at my lowest moments, but I always imagined you'd be eliminated in some humiliating spectacle. You'd go home. And we'd never have to see each other again, unless Owen ever decided to throw that reunion bash he was talking about.

And then when that bash happened, you were locked up again for violating your parole. And you weren't there.

I thought about filling these pages with all the reasons you were awful to me, every nitpick and tiny detail that made me hate your guts. But it's not like I was the perfect girlfriend, either. And, Duncan, we were just  kids.  None of us knew what we were doing, what it was we even wanted. Chris knew that and he used it against us every which way, exploiting us on international television.

I don't know if I really forgive you yet. I guess I'd have to see you in person to know. I've spent most of my time post-Total Drama working to forgive myself. Which has worked. Somewhat, at least.

Geoff says you're in Seattle. He says you're working as a tattoo artist. He says you go to AA meetings every week at the recreational center. That's good. That's really good, Duncan.

I work. Sanford, Sanford & Patel - started as a secretary, but I've clawed my way up a bit since then. Helped win some major cases. Hopefully it won't be long before they're adding a Reyes up on that sign.

Bridgette, Geoff, and I have game night every Wednesday evening. We take turns cooking dinner. Sometimes Bridgette slides me a CBD gummy to help me fall asleep at night. I jog, in the mornings. When I can, I go to the gym. Every now and then, I pick up Geoff's guitar and strum it a little. I still remember when you taught me my first bar chord. I couldn't make a  sound  on the B minor then, but I've gotten better, now. I've really gotten better.

I have a cat. This little precocious furball that Bridgette brought back from the shelter. She likes to claw at my nice leather desk chair and she doesn't like strangers at all; I adore her. Her name is Scruffy.

Every couple of months, I fly out to visit Gwen in Vancouver. They showed me the inky moon you put on their collarbone - I think it's beautiful. We go and get coffee together, catch up. She's got an art exhibition down in Bellingham in the fall - I plan to go, but I don't know if you'll be there. I don't know if I want you to be or not.

I've had a few boyfriends, but none of them could keep up with me. One time, Gwen and I got drunk and slept together. I'm not sure why I'm telling you this, but it was kind of good. Which is kind of funny. To me, at least.

Oh, and Geoff and Bridgette are engaged. Which I guess you already knew. It only just happened, so there are no real plans yet, you know those two. Never once made a list in their lives. But I guess if you're not at Gwen's show, we'll see each other at the wedding.

Would you talk to me? If we met again, would you even talk to me? I like to think I'd talk to you. But it's a hell of a lot easier to say it in writing than it is to do it in person.

Would you miss me?

I've missed you. I know people say you never stay with your high school sweetheart, but look at G and B, case in point. We didn't stay together, but sometimes I imagine what it would have been like if we had. Where we'd be right now.

Damn it, ok, I'm just going to say it: I love you. We never got around to telling that to each other while we were dating, but I think it's always been true, since all the way back in season one. I love you, Duncan Russo. It's totally humiliating, but I do. I still really, really do.

I'll always remember the way you kissed me back.

Just...I just hope you're ok, ok? Or if not, then that you're something close to it. That show screwed every single one of us over, some more than others. The shit Chris did to us was messed up, and if I could go back and time and withdraw my audition tape, I would.

But then I guess I'd never have met you. And I don't know if that would be better or worse for me in the long run.

sydney, november 2024 🐨

such a beautiful city! definitely warmer compared to melbourne. we weren't really able explore so much of their cbd as we spent most of our time around the opera house & harbour bridge. things i've noticed: two-story trains, still lots of apartments even those further away from the city, and quite a bit of litter.

on the second day, we took a day trip to scenic world to see the blue mountains + ride the world's steepest train. after that, we went back to our airbnb to take a quick nap before heading to coldplay's concert — the main reason we had to fly to sydney.

unfortunately, it rained during our last day. we just had brunch, caught a glimpse of the cruise that was waiting for its passengers, then went straight to the airport to catch our flight back to melbourne. ✈️
