Okay but what if Bucky gets found out by HYDRA and Zola after capture because Dugan and Gabe are always ushering him to the back away from possible notice, to the point it backfires and draws suspicion. When they pick him out HYDRA orders him to recite the Lord's Prayer and Bucky recites what he always remembers Steve saying. The Prayer he made sure to remember before he was shipped out just in case something like this happened.
Only... Steve is Catholic. The Prayer that Bucky's heard Steve and some of his fellow soldiers recite is different from the one a Protestant would recite and his dog tags say he's a Protestant. He didn't even know they said the Prayer differently.

I really need to figure out religion in Pockets verse.
I don't think there would be any major change to any religion, if only because I am not smart enough about any religion to make that call. But like - if Bucky is Jewish, and Steve is Catholic, what does that mean for Booky and Steeb when it comes time to go to synangogue or church?
Bucky would make sure Steeb would have a tiny kippah out of respect, but does Bucky having a Catholic Pocket cause issues? Does Steeb leave Booky in a safe place outside the church, or just in the doorway, and sit near the back to stay close to him? (Would Steve have to find a church that wouldn't make a fuss about having a Jewish Pocket?)
Midnight musings.

@stuckyfingers Sincerely hope this was a prompt because I ran with it.
Tumblr media
Both Catholic and Jewish wedding ceremonies have a lot of music involved, so I blended the two into one playlist and barely shrunk it down to 10 tracks.
Tumblr media
Prelude Two Men in Love by The Irrepressibles
This song, along with others, would be playing while everyone is waiting for the ceremony to get started. I picked this mostly because of the lyrics (I had trouble deciding which lyrics to grab for the preview below) which reflect actively asking each other to stay, talks about hiding and running from each other, and finally acknowledging that they're in love.
If I asked you now Would you be my prince? Would you lay down your armor And be with me forever?
Wedding Party Erev Shel Shoshanim by Harry Belafonte
This is a fairly traditional choice in Jewish weddings to accompany the wedding party processional as they take their places for the ceremony, but it's also just really beautiful and I thought Harry Belafonte would fit with the old men in love vibe.
[translated from Hebrew] The night falls slowly A breeze of roses blows Let me whisper a song to you quietly A song of love
Processional and Circling Kumi Lakh by Zach Mayer
In Catholic traditions, the bride would be walked down the aisle separate from the rest of the wedding party, whereas both bride and groom are escorted with the rest of the party in Jewish tradition followed by the bride circling the groom 7 times under the Chuppah. If they decide to have their processional separate, I envision this song accompanying the second processional, but mostly this is for the circling tradition. Winter is past.
[translated from Hebrew] O my dove, my undefiled, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice. For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; For, lo, the winter is past.
Offertory Ag Críost an Síol by Seán Ó Riada
Catholic tradition includes Mass and an open offering of communion. I think Steve might struggle to feel he should take communion, but I also think it would be important to him. This song would be during the preparation and setting of the Eucharist for Mass. I chose this arrangement in part because, despite being an Irish hymn based on an Irish prayer, it sounds like it draws from some of the Semitic roots of a lot of hymns which felt in keeping with the blended ceremony.
[translated from Gaelic] From Death to the end Not the end but a rebirth, In the Paradise of Graces May we be.
Communion Be Thou My Vision by Narrow Way
Once communion is prepared, this song would be for the taking of communion. I couldn't find my favourite translation/arrangement of this song which is even more fight-oriented than this one, but this still feels like a good fit. Be my Shield and my Sword feels very coded to our boys. This is another old Irish hymn, translated from the Gaelic Bí Thusa 'mo Shúile.
Be Thou my Buckler, my Sword for the fight; Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight; Thou my soul’s Shelter, be Thou my high Tow’r, Come raise Thou me heav’nward, oh Pow’r of my pow’r.
Presentation of Flowers to the Holy Mother A Mhuire na nGrás by Fionnuala Gill
I feel like it would be important for both Steve and Bucky to invoke their mothers at their wedding, but I feel that they would both especially want Sarah Rogers to be recognized here, so I selected another old Irish hymn for presenting flowers to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The lyrics here are so very much appropriate for Steve and Bucky, too, that I'm just going to include the whole translation.
[translated from Gaelic] O Mary of Graces And Mother of God May I tread in the paths That the righteous have trod. And mayest thou save me From evil's control, And mayest thou save me In body and soul. And mayest thou save me By land and by sea, And mayest thou save me From tortures to be. May the guard of the angels Above me abide, May God be before me And God at my side.
Recessional I'll Get By by Harry James, Dick Haymes
There are so many Harry James songs I associate with these two, but I'll Get By (As Long As I Have You) just makes too much sense to follow them as they leave as newlyweds. Til the end of the line.
I'll get by, as long as I have you Though there'll be rain and darkness too I'll not complain, I'll live with you Poverty, may come to me, that's true But what care I I'll get by, as long as I have you
First Dance There, I've Said It Again by Vaughn Monroe
Their first dance as a married couple could go any number of ways, but I wanted to find a song they would've heard as young men and maybe look back on it fondly. This one came out in February of 1945 and was number one on Billboard's National Radio Airplay right up until Bucky fell from a train in the Alps, so it might've been popular enough to be one of the last songs he heard before his presumed death.
Forgive me for wanting you so But one thing I want you to know I've loved you since heaven knows when There! I've said it again
Hora Od Yishama by Schlomo Carlebach
I'm gonna be honest with you, I just wanted any song for the hora that wasn't Hava Nagila, only because it's so over done (and a good hora is like a bajillion songs long, so they'll probably still have Hava Nagila in there somewhere, lol). Anyway, I am picturing their friends trying to lift these two massive super soldiers on chairs while dancing and Tony's gotta be in the suit just to make it happen and Thor has no idea what's going on but he's got the spirit and I'm giggling.
[translated from Hebrew] Yet again there shall be heard In the cities of Judah And in the streets of Jerusalem. The voice of joy and the voice of gladness The voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.
Last Dance Francesca by Hozier
The final dance of the night couldn't be anything else in my mind. I wanted something modern, to reflect them moving into the future, but still calling back to their origins and everything they've been through to find each other again. This song is a perfect fit.
If someone asked me at the end I'll tell them put me back in it Darling, I would do it again, ah, ah If I could hold you for a minute Darling, I'd go through it again, ah, ah I would still be surprised I could find you, darling In any life If I could hold you for a minute Darling, I would do it again, ah, ah [...] I would not change it each time (I would not change it each time) Heaven is not fit to house a love (Heaven is not fit to house a love) Like you and I (like you and I)
The playlist in its entirety can be found here: Barnes Rogers

Got to blow a buddy's mind today by pointing out that Steve Rogers went in the ice to the Latin Mass and defrosted post-"and with your spirit".
And like, woke up ~50 years after Vatican II was done and dusted. The old man priest at your childhood parish who was born in 1915? A contemporary of Steve.

So! As a kid who desperately wanted to write Catholic!Steve fanfic, I researched this.
There were two waves of Irish immigration, one was more Catholic and the other was more Protestant. Obviously, there’s some of both in each. According to census records, yes the “statistically more likely to be Steve’s wave” statistically had more Catholics.
So on a statistical level, yes maybe probably he was raised Catholic (but wasn’t he more raised by Bucky’s mother anyway?).
On an evidence-level, oh dear. There’s plenty of references to him being Christian (such as him going to “church” every Sunday in the Ultimates comics), but there’s never any allusions to Mass or crucifixes or Mary or Sacraments.
And on a personal level he doesn’t seem to follow Church teaching in the comics (I don’t feel like going into specifics here but people conveniently ignore the thing I’m alluding to)
Also, keep in mind, Captain America was created by two men who were Jewish (so him being Catholic probably wouldn’t be a personal motivation for them).
Catholic characters in the comics are usually denoted as Catholic and you don’t have to dig very far at all. The only evidence for Cap, however, is census records/statistics and a ThinkGeek replica dogtag I bought years ago with a “C” on it, denoting the religion of the soldier.
On that topic! The Actual Prop seems to have a “P” on it which stands for Protestant. So there goes that.
My Conclusion: INCONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE
Buttttt it’s definitely a fun headcanon to write! ;) and I love that joke, op.
For more, I like Fr Mike Schmitz’ takes on the character: a, b
Listen,,,,, if you don’t think that Steve Rogers is a hardcore Irish Catholic then I’m sorry but you’re wrong and he definitely tags his Ash Wednesday selfie with #avengerskickash

Bucky shouldn'tve been in there. Steve's room.
But the idiot had been avoiding him for three months now. And so he thought he'd pay a visit. Unfortunately, Steve was off doing God knows what so, he thought he'd laze around by the time, wait for his pal. It had been about an hour, when he'd heard something clatter from inside Steve's bedroom.
He quickly put down the coffee he'd helped himself to and gingerly approached the location of the sound. Steve's room smelt of sweet vanilla and peppermint. It looked cosy, soft white walls, a king sized bed with baby blue quilts and even softer looking pillows. The walk-in closet door was slightly ajar, with the sleeve of a plaid shirt poking out and a pair of running shoes just on the threshold.
Must've been in a rush this morning, Bucky thinks with a fond huff.
He walks over to the side of the bed closest to the window where the curtains are billowing like sails in the wind. Steve must've really been in a rush to leave his window open. He reaches out to shut the window when something shimmering on the floor catches his eye.
It's a small book. Leather-bound and tan with gold script embossed on the front. Bucky's mind provides a memory of Sarah Rogers walking with it everywhere she went. Of tiny Steve reading from it while he waited at the hospital for his mother after her evening shifts. If memory served him correctly- and these days it occasionally did- they'd buried the prayer book with Sarah when she died. Steve had told him to.
He must've really searched for this one then, Bucky realizes wistfully. His chest twinges at the thought of Steve waking up from the ice, lost and confused and trying his best to find anything and anyone to reconnect with his past again. Then he frowns. If Steve was so desperate to reconnect with his past, he wouldn't be avoiding Bucky right now. It's a bitter thought that seems too harsh in the soft and peaceful aura of Steve's room, so he quickly picks up the book. He eyes the open Bible on Steve's nightstand, a blue-beaded rosary with a celtic cross resting atop crisp pages.
Steve had never been as religious as his mother, but perhaps the future had changed his mind. Bucky knows it had changed him. Maybe Steve thought that going back to his Irish catholic roots again would somehow bring some closure. The thought doesn't comfort Bucky nearly as much as it should, because he knows Steve's been avoiding him, the one person who could probably share in his despair and loneliness and grant him some closure.
He sighs, moving to rest the prayer book back on the nightstand when he notices a word just barely concealed beneath the raised cover of the small prayer book.
Bucky. It says Bucky.
He frowns, reaching for the book again, every voice in his head screaming at him to leave it alone. That this was Steve's private stuff and he shouldn't be prying like some crazy obsessed person. But a part of him- the part that sort of resented Steve for avoiding him like the plague- won out. He opened the book.
Bucky's Prayer, it said, written in Steve's semi-neat scrawl.
The next line is a subheading that reads, "Prayer for Forgiveness."
It goes, "Jesus, forgive my sins. Forgive the sins that I can remember, and also the sins I have forgotten. Forgive the wrong actions I have committed, and the right actions I have omitted. Forgive the times I have been weak in the face of temptation, and those when I have been stubborn in the face of correction. Forgive the times I have been proud of my own achievements, and those when I have failed to boast of your works. Forgive the harsh judgements I have made of others, and the leniency I have shown to myself. Forgive the lies I have told to others, and the truths I have avoided. Forgive me the pain I have caused others, and the indulgence I have shown to myself. Jesus have pity on me, and make me whole."
Bucky knows it from the many times he'd go to church with Steve. Prayers for forgiveness were particularly popular during war-times as many women, children and men who weren't able to join in the war effort were encouraged to pray for their soldiers on the front lines. Steve used to tell him how he knew his mother would go to confessional, to pray for her husband and her ailing son. She often asked for forgiveness. As if it was her fault the way things had turned out.
He reads a line from the prayer again, one that Steve had underlined in blue ink, an anger building within his chest.
"Forgive me for the pain I have caused others, and the indulgence I have shown to myself."
Did Steve feel that way? And why the hell was it called Bucky's Prayer?
He turns the page and sees another subheading, "Intercession." He knew that as the part where the preacher would ask the congregation to say specific prayers for certain things and people they'd wished to pray for, or intercede. The next few lines make him sick.
"For Bucky,
I pray that his mind is healed in totality,
I pray he feels whole again,
I pray he feels loved again,
I pray he never feels alone again,
I pray he never has nightmares again,
And I pray he forgives me for my transgressions, for the pain I've caused him, though I don't deserve it. Amen."

Hi, sorry, this is about Steve Rogers one - he's technically supposed to be Jewish, but the mcu changed it so he could be "more relatable." This wouldn't be the first time they did it.
Nope! IRL context, Captain America was created by two Jewish men to be war propaganda to get Americans to join WWII. He's was created as the All American guy because (surprise!) Americans in 1940s did not care about the holocaust, that was Europe's problem. (x) (x) (whaaat? Americans were[are] anti-semitic/racist/homophobic?? Can't believe it). The US did not enter WWII because they wanted to stop a great evil. They entered because their colony-- sorry I mean, military base got bombed. The best way to get americans to care is to make a guy just like them fr.
I asked some friends about this and they said "Steve is Catholic with a recessive trait of written by Stan Lee so Jewish coded anyways somehow bc Stan Lee can't stop making everybody speak Yiddish"
In universe context, Steve's parents immigrated from Ireland in the 1920s. There's debate on whether he's protestant or Catholic but I'm on team Cap-is-Catholic. @historicallyaccuratesteve has a good post about this

I spent too much time having to look up information on WWII dog tags and now I can INSTANTLY spot when someone (artists, pin makers, fic writers, people who make novelty dog tags) has used the wrong format for Steve’s WWII dog tags. :/
The U.S. Army changed their format for dog tags -- officially identification tags -- several times over the course of the war, including changing the order of the name, whether the home address was included, forms of service numbers...the screen-used dog tags from Camp Lehigh somewhat infamously have a nonexistent service number (probably because they didn’t want to accidentally use a real one), but Steve would have gotten a new service number when he was commissioned anyway (by 1943 officer service numbers didn’t begin with O-, but his would begin with 0).  Steve’s Camp Lehigh set might have still had his next-of-kin’s address on them (the screen-used ones do not), but he also does not have next-of-kin, so there’s that.  (Not his home address, his next-of-kin’s.)  His later ones would not have because they stopped putting the address on in July 1943.  Unless he got new ones issued in mid-1944, all of those would have his name as STEVEN G ROGERS, but if he had to get a new set issued after March 1944, they would have his name as ROGERS, STEVEN G.  They would have the date of his last tetanus vaccine (T42 or T41, whenever), plus the booster if applicable, his blood type, and his religion (P (Protestant), C (Catholic), H (Jewish, the H stands for Hebrew), NP (no preference), or blank).  They would not have his rank or his branch of service or the fact he’s a super soldier on there.
The current format for dog tags has changed since WWII, so if Steve had new tags issued in 2012, they would not be the same as his WWII tags.  (Presumably the ones he is wearing in the last scene of CATFA are a replica of his WWII tags, but if the Army issued him new tags after that, they would be different -- they would also actually not be the same as those used today, because the format has changed since then.  more options for religion now too.)

Side B Steve Rogers headcanons:
Steve had crushes on guys from a young age, but he never realized they were crushes and it confused him why he felt pretty much the same towards men and women. But because he didn't want women to think he was hitting on them out of nowhere, he was shyer around them, so he figured that meant he was perfectly hetero until—nope.
Steve's mother ended up finding out about him being bi. She decided to be a good mentor to him and loved and supported him. That made losing her even harder.
Steve had a crush on Bucky for a time and it wasn't until he got over the crush that he finally came out to Bucky. Bucky was just like, "Bro, I know, did you just realize that??" Bucky keeps Steve's secret faithfully and accepts Steve's choice to stand by his religious beliefs.
Even though Steve is Side B and therefore doesn't have relationships with men for religious reasons, his experiences with being bi have made him vehemently anti-queerphobia. He ended up getting a reputation for standing up for gay soldiers in the military. While some of the soldiers were stuck in their ways, others came to talk to him and educate themselves and became allies to the gay soldiers, even though they were straight. Steve became something of a counselor for gay soldiers during the war — and their biggest ally. The U.S. government didn't dare try anything when Captain America stood up for the little guy. He was the country's darling.
Steve has a green rosary with a little golden crucifix that his mother brought over from Ireland and gave to him. When he misses her or is having a PTSD episode or has fallen back into depression, he pulls it out and kisses the crucifix. It makes him feel closer to her and to God. He keeps it on him at all times. Some days when he feels exhausted and lonely and thinks nobody will understand his being Side B, he gives it a little squeeze and remembers his mom.
One time when Natasha was trying to set Steve up, she jokingly suggested a man. Steve said, "No, but it's nice to see you're picking up on my type." Natasha was confused for months.
Steve is very open about his sexuality at his local church because he knows how much the taboos of the day negatively impacted his mental health. He serves as a mentor to many Side B people not only in his church, but in other churches in the area. He ended up starting a Side B club at his church where they watch movies and eat snacks and read books and discuss their experiences. Steve is proud of being able to give these people what he never had, especially young people since he doesn't want them to be saddled with the years of unlearning toxicity that he was stuck with. But he also finds it's incredibly healing for himself as well. Young LGBT+ people at his church look up to him and often go to him for advice and understanding. He's their biggest hero.
Feel free to add on!! :)

Copy Right and Public Domain in 2025!
It's January 1st 2025 which means it's my favorite unsung holiday! Public Domain Day! This is the day once a year when, in the US, copyrights expire and things enter the public domain, meaning they belong to everyone! even you, Steve!
American copyright for books, movies, art work, and musical compositions (but not recordings, more on that later) runs for 95 years (way too long!) so today works published in 1929 join us in the public domain.
So whats free? so glad you asked.
Popeye the Sailor Man
Tumblr media
Many people assume Popeye originated as a cartoon character but thats not true, he comes from a comic strip. The strip was called Thimble Theatre and Popeye was something of a late addition. Thimble Theatre was first published in 1919, so Popeye's girlfriend Olive Oyl has been in the public domain since before the big 20 year copyright freeze of 1998-2019. Popeye first appeared as a minor character 10 years into the strip's run but was so popular he soon took over and the strip would be renamed Popeye less than 5 years later. Now as always whats public is only what appears in 1929, later developments, remain copyrighted. Such as, while Popeye always had super strength its not till 1932 his superpowers were tied to eating spinach, and Olive Oyl originally had a different boyfriend named Ham Gravy, who she dumped for Popeye when he became the main character. It looks like Popeye is following tradition for famous now public domain characters and getting a quicky horror movie this year.
Tintin!
Tumblr media
This is personally very exciting as someone who grew up with the Belgian boy detective. Like Popeye I expect a lot of people don't know that Tintin started off as a weekly comic strip. Indeed Tintin appeared as a part of a weekly youth supplement in the Catholic newspaper The Twentieth Century. Any ways, Tintin was first published in there in January 1929, and soon would start what would become the first Tintin story, Tintin in the Land of the Soviets. Now only part of Tintin in the Land of the Soviets was published in 1929, the story line wrapped up in May 1930, so only those 1929 stories and what appears in them is free and clear and Tintin was published in black and white not color. Tintin's author Hergé had no idea what he was doing and was really learning on the job so In The Land of the Soviets is generally seen as his weakest outing and the only one he never opted to redraw in later years. Even so it's nice to see the character free in the world. No word on if Tintin will star in a horror movie.
Buck Rogers (but not really)
Tumblr media
The original futuristic space man was published, again a comic strip, in 1929 which means he should enter the public domain today, but he won't. That's because he already is public domain! Before the Copyright Act of 1976 copyright was 28 years with the option to renew for another 28 years. The copyright on the original comic strips was not renewed so ran out at the end of 28 years, 1958. So Buck Rogers has been free and clear for close to 70 years now, whatever you hear about him today.
What else?
Famously last year Mickey Mouse entered the public domain, but all the entered public domain was one (maybe two) animated short, Steamboat Willie. Well this year a dozen Mickey Mouse animated shorts enter the public domain, including the first time Mickey has his iconic white gloves, and the first time Mickey speaks (the first thing Mickey Mouse ever says, voiced by Walt Disney himself, is "Hot dogs! Hot dogs!" in case you were wondering) This will give creators much more to work with if they want to use Mickey in their works which is exciting.
Speaking of Walt Disney, The Skeleton Dance is entering public domain, you likely don't know the title but I suspect you've seen at least part of it at some point
Tumblr media
so look for this showing up on TVs in the backgrounds of films and TV shows in the next year or so
Books
The iconic novels of World War I, Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms and Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front enter public domain. In fact All Quiet on the Western Front entered public domain last year, but only in the original German, the 1929 translation by Arthur Wesley Wheen is whats entered the public domain now. John Steinbeck's first novel, Cup of Gold, William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury, Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own, and Agatha Christie's Seven Dials Mystery (always get an Agatha Christie novel on this list for the rest of our lives). Dashiell Hammett published both Red Harvest and The Maltese Falcon, later made into one of the greatest films of all time, in 1929. Future children's book author E. B. White (who's go on to write Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little) and future New Yorker cartoonist and humorist James Thurber teamed up to write the delightfully titled Is Sex Necessary? Or, Why You Feel the Way You Do a book of spoof essays making fun of popular books on Freudian sexual theories at the time. The Roman Hat Mystery the first of the long running Ellery Queen mysteries was published, Queen would keep publishing mysteries into the 1970s (and Ellery Queen was a pen name for two people). Richard Hughes' A High Wind in Jamaica and Oliver La Farge's Laughing Boy also came out in 1929 and are in the public domain now. There's much else but those are the highlights sorry if I missed your favorite 1929 novel.
Movies
Alfred Hitchcock and Cecil B. DeMille's first movies with sound, Blackmail and Dynamite respectively, came out in 1929. Marx Brothers' first feature film The Cocoanuts joins the public domain. Other comedy land marks are Harold Lloyd's first sound film, Welcome Danger and Buster Keaton's last silent film, Spite Marriage (which Keaton also directed). John Ford's first sound film, The Black Watch, which also is 21 year old John Wayne's first appearance in a film, as an uncredited extra, he worked in the art department. Hallelujah the first studio film to have an all black cast came out that year. Also worth noting is The Hollywood Revue of 1929 a singing and dancing review, one of the earliest and the movie that popularized the song Singin’ in the Rain, maybe the first time a movie made a song a hit.
Musical compositions
musical compositions, ie the lyrics and musical notations you might see on sheet music are governed by the 1976 Copyright Act, and music written in 1929 is public domain. Music recordings are governed by a whole different law (we'll get there). Songs written in 1929 include Singin’ in the Rain by Arthur Freed & Nacio Herb Brown, Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Black and Blue by the legendary Fats Waller, What Is This Thing Called Love? by Cole Porter, Tiptoe Through the Tulips by Alfred Dubin, You Were Meant for Me by Arthur Freed & Nacio Herb Brown, and also Happy Days Are Here Again by Jack Yellen which would become FDR's campaign theme song in 1932.
Art!
a number of pieces by Salvador Dalí including:
Illumined Pleasures
Tumblr media
The Accommodations of Desire
Tumblr media
The Great Masturbator
Tumblr media
are entering the public domain as is René Magritte’s The Treachery of Images.
Tumblr media
Art is hard because while movies and books are clearly "published" and put on sale, what counts as "published" for a piece of art? the law is not totally sure.
Musical Recordings
as I promised, we got here. Till 2017 there were no federal laws governing the copyright of music recordings before the 1970s, it was governed by a confusing patchwork of state laws and it was not totally clear what was or was not free and clear even from the very earliest recordings ever. Now the term of a music recording's copyright is set at 100 years (way too long) so music recorded in 1924 is now public domain such as. Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen by Marian Anderson, Everybody Loves My Baby (But My Baby Don’t Love Nobody But Me) by Louis Armstrong, California Here I Come by Al Jolson, Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin, Shreveport Stomp by Jelly Roll Morton, Mama’s Gone, Good Bye by Ray Miller, and It Had To Be You by Marion Harris. Now many recordings a lot less famous can finally be preserved and digitized to save them for the next 100 years. Many abandoned works are literally rotting away since without the copyright holder's permission digitizing a work isn't legal.
