I don't need you to mourn with us. You clearly don't view those lost as part of your community, so why would you mourn?
And I don't need you to comfort us. You've shown time and time again that you do not care for our pain, so why would I expect you to start now?
But I do need you to not celebrate our grief - to not treat our pain like a victory.
Because nothing has been gained here. Palestine has not moved closer to freedom. It has not gained ground, or resources, or allies. This does not move us closer to the end of the war, and if anything it strengthens Israel's resolve to continue fighting because the alternative is death.
So if you are celebrating, the only thing you are celebrating is death, and grief. And if you think that's worthy of celebrating, then I think you need to really think about if that's the sort of person you want to be.

I don't really know what to say. This morning I got the news that six of the hostages were found dead, recently shot. I know the family of one of them, and they are the bravest and most resilient people I know. They gave me, and, well, everyone hope that their son would be back. I fully believed he would. Everyone did. I guess we just expected him to turn up one day at synagogue after all this time.
There are a few thoughts going through my head right now. Most of them start with the word "why", like,
Why did a 23 year old spend 11 out of the 12 months of his 23rd year in a tunnel?
Why do baby-murdering, hostage-taking, house-burning militias live two hours away from my house?
and
Why do I, an 18 year old, fresh out of highschool, know three dead people, ranging in ages from 19 to 32?
Some of them start with the words "what", like
What are they going to do now?
What awful, awful heartbreak am I going to hear about next?
and
What the fuck?

Waking up to see the news that Hersh and five others were murdered. They were alive just days ago. They survived for this long, only for lives to be cut short by the bullets of Hamas.
They were in Rafah. Where everyone said not to go, that's where they were. To everyone who said don't go into Rafah, their blood is on your hands.

i've been trying to figure out how to word this since the news broke.
it's unbearably cruel that those six hostages were murdered so close to being freed. it's cruel that their captors might've heard their families calling out to them and murdered them anyway. it's cruel that they were kept, killed, and found in an area full of displaced civilians. it's cruel that hamas is using innocent gazan civilians as human shields, and then blaming the israeli forces for the incredibly high death toll when they have done nothing to protect the civilians under their government.
more so, it's terrible that people have been happy that the hostages didn't get to go home to their families. it's terrible that i haven't seen any anti-zionists who have claimed over and over and over that they want to limit the death toll, and yet the hostages receive no sympathy. they're angry that noa argamani was freed and managed to be happy despite the tragedy that happened to her.
i remember october 7th. i remember being so confused about why so many people were celebrating death. i remember thinking i must have been misunderstanding because these were good people and if they were happy about something that seemed so terrible then clearly i missed something? i remember when they convinced me that israeli citizens were all inherently complicit in the deaths of palestinian civilians.
i remember being vaguely aware of how inconsistent the western anti-zionist movement was, but being told that jews israelis were more inconsistent and therefore everything in the movement was fine. i remember feeling anxious every time i opened social media but continuing to do because i was guilt-tripped into thinking that to be a good person, i needed to look at and share graphic pictures of dead and injured people in gaza.
they don't care about people or lives. they will quite happily encourage people to destroy their mental health in the name of activism because this is how you help palestine!!!
i hope that the hostages' families and friends find peace. i hope the rest of the hostages are able to return home safely. i hope that gazan civilians are able to build a democracy and thrive. i hope the conflict ends soon and everyone affected receives the food, water, shelter, medicine, and whatever else they need.
may their memories be a blessing.

An Israeli source said three of the six hostages whose bodies were recovered from Gaza were supposed to be released in the first stage of the hostage release/cease-fire deal currently being negotiated. "They appeared in the lists given over at the beginning of July. It was possible to bring them back alive," the source said. According to the proposed deal for the release of the hostages that has been discussed recently, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Eden Yerushalmi and Carmel Gat were supposed to be released in the first stage of the deal ( source: haaretz )
I've been crying since the news broke but knowing that three of them were supposed to come home just feels even crueler. The truth is none of them should have even been away from home. the past 11 months have been nothing but pain, fear and grief.
may their memory be a blessing

Hostages and the spiral of devastation and hope
“Take a look at this picture. This is my sister Carmel. Actually, this is not my sister, this is just a photo of her. What I am here today to tell you is that she is not just a piece of paper, she’s a real person and she’s still a hostage in Gaza”When I saw Alon Gat speak at the Knesset, advocating for his sister Carmel, I was impressed by his quiet and gentle dignity. He spoke about his wife…

Who are the hostages still held by Hamas?
On October 7, 2023, 253 Israelis and foreign nationals were kidnapped to Gaza by Hamas and gazan civilians. Since then, 105 were released in a prisioner exchange deal, 4 were released by Hamas and 3 were rescued.
However, 60 remain in captivity [as of 02/09/24] (4 of those were kidnapped prior to 2023). A recent investigation has concluded that more than a fifth of the hostages are dead and the fate of some other hostages remains unknown. This video explains how doctors determine which hostages are dead, based on the nature of their injury and by analyising footage and the victims' last phone calls. Additionally, during the operation in Gaza, the IDF has recovered the bodies of a few victims and returned to their families for burial.
Since I couldn't find this all in one place, I've compiled a list of: 1) hostages who are presumed alive; 2) hostaged whose death has been reported/confirmed; 3) hostages who were released or rescued. In the group of hostages presumed to be alive who haven't been released, the youngest is 1-year-old Kfir Bibas and the oldest hostage is Iraqi-born 85-year old Shlomo Mansour.
As we learn more information, I'll continue to update this post.
They need to come back home. I'm hoping for more successful rescue operations soon. Keep them in your thoughts.

ok, another thing about october 7th is that like....
i think a lot of people have a compassion block with it bc they see an analog to 9/11 where it was used to "justify" a war and ultimately the actual people become political props
i guess what i want to, idk, dig at... is how using the people who died, survived, or were taken hostage as political props dehumanizes them and then when that is used as a reason not to care it dehumanizes them further
and then another piece to this is that like. within israel. the israeli government did not really act as though it gave a shit either. initial reports of missing persons etc were done by citizens rather than organized by the government. it took a ridiculous amount of time (was it multiple weeks?) before anyone from the government visited survivors in the hospital. the government dropped the ball with funding temporary housing for people displaced from the gaza envelope and the north, i think its largely been funded by nonprofits. i don't think there's been accountability for the massive security and intelligence failure that led to oct 7 in the first place. basically the government fucked up massively both before and after the attack, didn't take care of victims' families or survivors (not to mention abandoning the hostages to their fate), and regular citizens stepped in to fill that role instead.
so it's like a triple hit for those folks. the israeli government didn't give a shit, they're being used as political props, AND on top of it people around the world don't care and think they deserved it.
all of this to say that if you participate in that dynamic, if you dehumanize the victims, hostages, and survivors in your mind because they're political props, it's actually backwards. it's dehumanizing people who are already dehumanized. them being political props should make you care more, not less.
not to mention that many of the hostages' families have been calling for a ceasefire/hostage deal to get their loved ones back. the niece of carmel gat (one of the hostages) speaks at protests for a deal. the sibling of chaim katzman (one of the people killed) went on the news months ago saying that their brother would not have wanted this war fought in his name.
so it's spitting on that activism as well when you view those folks as on some level responsible for the war because their loved ones are being used justification.
