A raw and magical journey into the life of iconic artist Frida Kahlo, told through her own words from diaries, letters, essays, and interviews. Vividly brought to life with lyrical animation inspired by her unforgettable artwork.

Very interesting approach for a documentary about an artist. It made good use the substantial amount of source material, documents, pictures and film clips. I also liked seing the historical footage from Mexico and New York.

I'm somewhat torn about the use of animation for Kahlo's pictures. One the one hand they were a good fit for the style of the doc. But at times they also distracted from the paintings itself.

Definitely worth to watch. A very good portrait of Kahlo.

Carla Gugino’s career is so entertaining. On the one hand, you’ve got her work with filmmakers like Flanagan: poignant, complex, emotional. Clearly just an artistic buffet. She’s in the ring. She’s trying new things. She’s gonna make you cry. You’ll wish she was your mom. You root for her love story. You want her to kill those people. She’s a hero, she’s a monster, she’s a woman with the deepest depths. Just a tour de force.

On the other, you’ve got her work with her partner, every instance of which is just utterly unhinged “let’s get the weirdest combo of actors together and throw a fucking PARTY” chaos. Has this writer ever met a woman in his life? Is there a plot? Who are these people? Can’t be sure, but god they’re all having so much fun. And somehow Carla is still giving remarkably solid performances. How does she do it?
