Some back story For Ben back when he was still a child. Some of you may remember some rough sketches I did for this, I suddenly felt like having a real go at it! Consider it practice because I want to start the Escart comic properly soon!

I feel like I learned a lot with this, what to do and what not to do next time, what I need to develop more, and so on! For now, enjoy this rather depressing blossoming of Ben's extraordinary strength 💪

I imagine that when the time bubble on Fawcett popped, they sent some people out to scout this new world they were in(same world but ya know it’s the ✨future✨). So out goes Billy, Alan Armstrong(a.k.a., Spy Smasher), and Billy’s boss Sterling Morris, who is very adamant on going because he knows how reckless his reporter can be.

It all immediately goes to shit.

Billy sees all the large screens with COLOR(I mean color tv was made in the late 30s, but I imagine it was much more expensive back then), and asks where they go to listen to the radio. Passerby laughs at him for “listening to that oldie art”. Don’t you know people only listen to that in their car when there’s nothing else to do? It’s all about streaming now!

Billy has a mental breakdown, of course.

Alan is still living in wartime. Why are all these people out and about in the open during DAYTIME?? What was that popping noise? Oh it was a balloon? Okay—WHAT WAS THAT—Oh, it was a chip bag being opened? Cool cool, that’s fine. Rad. Coolio.

Alan also has a mental breakdown.

Sterling says fuck this, is this really what we spend decades fantasizing about? He packs up and they go home.

Oh and Mary has a breakdown when she sees that no one really wears bright, white on color frilly/poofy dresses out in the open for things other than a costume party or something else. She’s a MODEL. She knows all the latest trends and all the girls go to her for how to wear their bows this month, what color goes with what leggings, what—

WHAT DO YOU MEAN NO ONE WEARS THESE ANYMORE???

No one leaves Fawcett. Not because they’re a cult. Not because they have a way of life that no one will understand(but that counts). No, no one leaves Fawcett because everyone is damn near terrified of what the heck the rest of this world has come to.

You know, Captain Marvel may have been warned to stay out of politics, but Billy "not threatened by gods" Batson wasn't. I think the little dude would rant about corrupt politicians as Whiz Kid on Whiz Radio and not get punished for it because who's going to tell off a kid? Anything Captain Marvel can't say, Billy will yell into a mic!

Oh for sure!

Billy has opinions and he's going to let people know about them! He was given a microphone and an audience and by the gods he's going to use them! Captain Marvel has to play nice with the local politicians but Billy doesn't! And he has always been more politically aware than most kids his age.

(A certain golden age comic of Billy trying to use Captain Marvel to commit voter fraud because he was too young to vote but was highly invested in local politics comes to mind)

I can see Mr Morris telling him to document evidence and cite his sources when he gets heated just to avoid people suing WHIZ radio for slander and keep up his journalistic intergrity, but the second Billy has the smallest shred of proof, Mr Morris sits back and eagerly listens to Billy tear into whatever corrupt official has caught his eye.

Do you think Sterling Morris ever considered adopting Billy?

That's a good question.

I think that Billy often tries to downplay his own situation to Mr. Morris a lot, sometimes by pretending to be his own dad, but that Mr. Morris still has his suspicions and tries to do a lot for Billy because of it. He takes him on little outings and trips so that he can have some childhood fun despite his very adult responsibilities. I also think that if he'd ever known for sure that Billy didn't have a family/anywhere to go, he would offer to take care of him (similar to how Uncle Dudley does in some continuities) but would respect Billy's decision to be independent if that's what he wanted. And that's what makes his relationship with Billy so special--the respect.
