When Hob appeared in the Dreaming it was to find himself wearing the exact same suit he had worn to opening night, the one he had taken off just before crawling into bed.

As a major supporter of the Staatsoper Hamburg during its latest interior restoration, Hob had easily been able to secure private loge seating at this special season premiere of the Ballett von John Neumeier. The obscene amount of euros he was willing to pay didn’t hurt, either. 

And, because he had carefully cultivated his persona in this lifetime as a somewhat reclusive and definitely eccentric wealthy patron of the arts, no one batted a single eyelash at the fact that only two people ended up sitting in the 15-person box. 

The whole thing was an extremely exclusive event. The sets and choreography and costuming for this production of Ein Sommernachtstraum were supposed to be "peak avant-garde" and "the future of modern ballet." Therefore, unsurprisingly, the people in attendance were the elite of the elite, the upper echelons of what passed for pan-European Society today. 

And boy did Hob love fucking with them.

So as they stepped into the post-curtain reception of course Hob unbuttoned the top buttons on his black shirt, first the three holding the high collar closed, then another two beneath those, down to the top of his sternum. When he was done Dream had quirked one perfect raven's wing eyebrow at him, icy blue eyes darting down to Hob's neck once and then back. Hob felt a thrill electrify his spine as the King of Dreams tried and failed to hide his smirk behind a sip of five-thousand-euro champagne. 

And Christ on the cross… the simple act of opening his shirt to show a glimpse of his neck to the world? It was so. Fucking. Worth it. 

Nothing in the past three centuries had quite compared to watching a gaggle of goddamned British Royals realize that the man in the bespoke Burberry suit and limited run Louboutins was wearing a black leather collar from which hung a two-inch long gemstone to rival the Black Prince’s Ruby. 

Not that the collar had been the first thing to turn heads. Oh no, that honor had gone to the jewel on Hob’s arm: Dream, looking like nothing less than the distilled perfection of the masculine human form poured into a gauzy shirt, waist cincher, and black leather. Who at such a party wasn't going to notice the Platonic ideal of a leggy goth dom, in three inch heels with his tits out, pressed possessively to Hob's side?

Elegant pianist's fingers toyed with the hair at his nape and Hob realized that he could not wait for the rumors to spread. It was almost too bad that the society pages of newspapers didn’t exist anymore. 

But as the night had gone on, Dream had gotten more and more stiff, more and more sharp and unpleasant. So much so that Hob was not surprised that his lover had fled the Waking World and left him to go to bed alone.

“Like the suit, did you love?” Hob ventured as said lover stepped out of the shadows of Hob’s bedroom represented in the Dreaming. 

Dream approached on quick feet, also wearing the same outfit as earlier, heels clacking on the oak floor. He rounded on Hob with a ravenous expression. His eyes had already gone fully black and novae burst bright in their depths. 

Oh. Things were about to happen. Dream was worked up.

Hob gasped as his blazer and shirt disappeared and he was pushed to his knees by unyielding hands. “Yes.” Long fingers grabbed at the ruby nestled in the hollow of Hob’s throat. “Clearly." He tilted his head to the side, considering Hob with an unblinking stare. "It was the suit.” Dream yanked and Hob fell forward, landed on his hands, almost choking himself on the unmoving ring of leather around his neck. “That caught my eye.”

Before Hob could look up one of Dream’s boots was on his shoulder and shoving him back upright. Hob laughed up at his lover, overcome with the urge to taunt the gorgeous eldritch entity who owned him heart, body, and mind. If Dream was going to be on fire, it might as well be a right proper blaze. “Caught lots of eyes in that suit, I did.”

Dream snarled and grabbed at Hob’s hair in one hand. With a snap of his fingers, the Dream King summoned manacles, connected by a steel chain, to clamp around Hob’s wrists. The grip of the leather was tight and familiar and Hob couldn't contain his moan. "Everyone who saw you in that suit wanted you. But then you decided to show off and they all wanted to own you, too." Dream growled. "I could smell their daydreams. Taste their entitled unimaginative little fantasies. How dare anyone even think of taking what is mine."

Hob stared up in wide-eyed awe, as the fury in Dream started to cause parts of his form to blur, his hair wafting away into shadow, his shirt evaporating into the ether, his eyes bleeding out ink that did not obey gravity.

"Tonight each one of their dreams–nay, nightmares–will be to watch as I reassert my claim on you. And each person will know, in their very marrow, that they will never, ever experience love with such fervor."

The boot on Hob's shoulder dropped to press on the chain, drawing Hob's hands down, but not to the floor. When Dream let go of Hob's hair he picked up the ruby at his neck, pulled it taut. "What say you, pet? What say you to having a hundred people watch as I fuck you until you forget every name you have ever been known by? Until you no longer remember what century it is? Until you scream?"

Hob could only come up with one answer: Yes.

Thoughts on the Alysanne is Maegor's daughter AU? I feel like it has some interesting potential, and it vastly recontextualizes different parts of Jaehaehae (I do not like him sjsjsjs) and Alysanne's relationship (such as Jaehaehae's treatment of their daughters) but I wanna hear what you think about it!

I’ve touched on this a bit before but since you actually want to hear my thoughts, allow me to present to you my Jaehaerys Is The Goddamn Worst, And Alysanne Annoys Me Too: An Essay lmao but my answer is basically “yeah all of what you just said.”

I think it makes Alysanne much more palatable (to me) as a character because as she stands, she just fixates on forcing her daughters through these fucked up marriages at too young an age bc it traumatized her to be married and pregnant at 15 too but she’d never admit that being a willing participant in her own kidnapping by her brother-husband was the single worst thing that ever happened to her, and because Alysanne doesn’t want to admit it (and Jaehaerys would never see it as wrong or a mistake) F&B really shies away from delving into the fact that Alysanne is as deranged of a mother as Cersei is. So as she stands, she’s very flat to me because she’s presented very flatly and inconsistently. She’s so in love with Jaehaerys, she’s maritally raped by Jaehaerys, she’s a loving and doting mother, she forces her daughters into marriages when they’re the same too young age she was, she accuses her teenage girls of being scheming whores then gets angry when her husband accuses their teenage girls of being scheming whores, and worst of all we are just told “Maegelle tells them to make up so they do” so we don’t know why Alysanne gets over all of this. What is the point of riding a dragon when you never use that dragon to protect your daughters from unwanted teen marriages? We’re just not given a good enough justification for why her behavior is so weird and frustrating towards her daughters.

Make her Maegor’s daughter though…most of her behavior as an adult makes more sense. Like a worse version of Rhaenyra’s childhood almost - a father desperate for a son, but lowkey obsessed with his daughter, who makes all his hang ups about his parents the problems of every woman around him, except Maegor is out here blood sacrificing and torturing and starting wars and forcing babies on wives he discards quickly and brutally. Then here comes Jaehaerys on a white horse green dragon to save her from the horror her life has become, and he loves her so much he runs away with her even though Alyssa says they shouldn’t marry because people won’t like it. And they have beautiful children, and a beautiful marriage, and build a beautiful kingdom.

Then her pregnancies start getting dangerous. Gaemon, then Valerion, die. Alysanne thinks of the shriveled up mutants she called brothers, if Maegor’s taint has passed to her. Her perfect husband ignores her no, and forces Gael on her. Alysanne remembers that he said nothing to Rogar when Alyssa died, merely wept. Then her daughters start to die. Daella, Alyssa, Viserra, all within a few years. Then Jaehaerys makes Saera watch as he murders her boyfriend, calls her a whore, and says Alysanne cannot follow Saera to Lys. Alysanne thinks of Maegor torturing the Harroways over Alys’ presumed infidelity. Jaehaerys says he’s sorry, and her daughter badgers her into forgiving him, and she remembers how she helped Jaehaerys badger Alyssa into forgiving Rogar. Not two years later, Jaehaerys passes over Rhaenys. Alysanne thinks of how she was never enough for her father, how she felt so superior to Rhaena banished to Dragonstone and resented by Aerea, yet there she is dragging Gael away from court because she can’t stand to be with Jaehaerys. How her father was surrounded by dead women and dead babies and how Jaehaerys is surrounded by his own dead daughters, but surely she did the right thing, surely Maegor was worse, surely the realm is better off? Is he right to pass over Rhaenys? Is she enabling a man just as monstrous as her father? She will never decide, because Maegelle will guilt her about keeping Gael isolated at Dragonstone, and Alysanne will do as she’s told, just like Rhaena, and Alyssa, and Jeyne, Elinor, Ceryse, Alys, and Tyanna, just like every one of her daughters.

I do get why Alysanne is Alyssa & Aenys’ and not Maegor’s. The weird Targ babies, the line not descending from Visenya, Jaehaerys and Alysanne being held up as the perfect Targaryen couple specifically because they are brother and sister and dragon riders. I do even think canon Alysanne is likely traumatized by her time as a hostage on Dragonstone, and the ensuing war, and the trauma bond that caused with Jaehaerys, and it makes her idolize Jaehaerys, and then he isolates her at Dragonstone so he can swiftly and safely marry, groom, and knock her up. It’s not like,,,, a fun time, and it’s enough to make anyone crazy and weird about their daughters, but I think having her father be Maegor makes Alysanne herself much deeper because it gives her, as the most beloved Targaryen queen, a blood tie to the most hated Targaryen king, and a marriage to the most beloved Targaryen king. It fits better with a lot of the themes of the main series (again, imo) - forcing the spotlight on the outsiders to see how the affect the story from behind the scenes. The fall of Aegon’s sons, and The Long Reign, not told from the PoV or to serve the PoV of any of the kings or princes, but of the queen that tied them all together.

The Time-Lock has always existed. The Time Lords have always been aware that there's some other version of reality sealed away beyond some impenetrable temporal barrier.

The Anti-Time breach (mid Eighth Doctor) causes a slight destabilization of the Time-Lock, and for the first time, the Time Lords glimpse what lies behind the barrier: an inevitable, eternal war-timeline that the Time Lords will presumably lock away at some point in the future to preserve the Web of Time. They get paranoid and start preparing for war.

The early Eighth Doctor, desynchronized from Gallifrey-time by a Faction Paradox infection, destroys one of the War Gallifreys but only manages to delay the war, not prevent it.

Conceptual warfare wreaks havoc across segments of the Web of Time, but the two sides are well matched. The Enemy empower the Daleks to fight the Time Lords on the 3D front and thus gain a brief advantage. The late Eighth Doctor gets involved with this front of the war despite his best efforts.

Ohila tries to preserve the Web of Time by forcing two very different versions of the Doctor into existence, in the hope that a major difference in the timelines will prevent the war-timeline from taking precedence. War and Shalka coexist in different versions of the same four centuries: the war in one version, adventures as usual in the other version.

The War Doctor fights battles on all dimensional fronts of the war, against both the Daleks and the Enemy. In the end he (unknowingly) reaches the same conclusion as his previous self and uses the Moment, who forces him to live with all his memories.

The war timeline is Time-Locked out of existence, so that the Warrior technically never existed and Shalka regenerates into Nine. But because Time Lords remember altered timelines, Nine comes out remembering his time as Shalka but ALSO all the horrors of both the Dalek Front and the War in Heaven, and knowing he destroyed not one but two fully-inhabited Gallifreys.

And so the timelines actually make perfect sense :D

I started in DC by reading fanfics, but as I began to read actual comics, I started to be unable to read the actual fanfic that got me into it in the first place because it's so out of character.

But there are still some stories that I love to read because I love the found family trope so much, even if it isn't really accurate to the source material.

As a comics purist (sometimes), are there tropes that you like enough that you'll still enjoy a fic even if it's not accurate to canon?

oh my god this is SUCH a fun question. bc while i started with the comics, there were certain characters and/or character dynamics where i was exposed to the fanon before the canon (just bc it's hard to read everything when you start out just to read some fanfic) and so i've definitely experienced the fanon to canon transition. (*especially* with Jason Todd. i had only read 80s/90s stuff where he was already dead or the New-52 bc that was on-going when i got into comics and man. the fanon misunderstandings i had about him before i got frustrated and sat down to read all his pre-Flashpoint stuff were absolutely bonkers.) and aside from that, whilst i tend to prefer canon over fanon, i'm not past giving fanon its flowers for occasionally having really interesting insights. occasionally. so some of my fanon "guilty pleasure" tropes would probably be

Morally Grey Tim Drake - this is one where if you try to back it up with canon, i *will* get salty about it. of everyone in the Batfam aside from maybe Bruce and Cass, Tim has the *most* black and white morals. often his internal conflicts are routed in such an inability to compromise his moral views and it can cause him to clash with other characters. he's *very* stiff and rigid in his beliefs and is *rare* to compromise in even the smallest ways. i mean, DC has repeatedly used Tim Drake of Tomorrow/Savior/Gun Batman!Tim for a reason. it's to demonstrate that of everyone, Tim *cannot* have his morals compromised. there's no grey area for him. he's zero or a hundred, so if he tips over the edge of "too far" he tips *all the way*, and doing so is one of his worst fears, how he could go "too far" if he let himself. a couple panels out of context from Red Robin (2009) (which was a grief spiral for Tim to begin with) don't change that. now that said. if it's done *right*, i sort of love Tim being morally grey in fanfic. it takes a specific flavor for me, and it's incredibly important to include that mental spiral along with it, of him struggling to justify it. i don't have any interest in "Tim Drake is loosy goosy with Bruce's morals and has the highest kill count and no one knows teehee" bc it doesn't play with the interesting parts of making Tim morally grey, which are fracturing his psyche. but all in all, i think it's fun to put Tim in a morally grey area and i will read it in fanfic and i enjoy writing it a lot

Joker Junior!Tim Drake - i've not written it on this account (yet) but on my main ao3 account one of my biggest fics surrounds this concept. this is one of those "well *technically* it's canon but only in a specific very divorced from the comics universe and would not work at all in the main timeline" so, i categorize it as fanon in that 95% of fics exploring the concept are not doing so within the Batman Beyond universe, but the main timeline. i just love it. I'll take any excuse to whump Tim, but this concept is so fun. psychologically breaking Tim will always be my favorite pastime. there are so many ways to explore the long-term effects this could have on him, how it could affect the Batfam. i'm not a fan of it being used as a "gotcha" to Jason or Babs' trauma with the Joker to paint Tim as the Ultimate Victim, but it is fun to see how their relationships would be affected by being mutual victims of him. (i have a vague JayTim idea where TIm fully retires from being Robin after being Joker Junior and killing the Joker, making Steph Robin for most of his typical Robin era and Jason still tracks him down out of curiosity bc he wants to know what happened and all. very underbaked but i've got thoughts.)

Renegade/Apprentice of Slade!Dick Grayson - this is another one where yes, this happened *sort of* in canon, but i highly doubt most people writing Renegate!Dick have read or are actually pulling from Nightwing: Renegade. it's just an exploration fo the concept fo Dick being Slade's apprentice and i will always eat it up in any capacity. whether Dick grows up with Slade from a young age, or chooses Slade for whatever reason later in life. it's not anything that works in canon bc it compromises Dick morally (similar to the above with Tim) and therefore will always come across incredibly fanon in most fics. but i can't say i don't enjoy it. it's fun to make Dick a little morally fucked up and see what you can make him under Slade's tutelage.

Jason & Damian Meeting in the League -there's no world where i believe this could work in the canon comics. (maybe in the Young Justice cartoon i suppose, but even then i think it's iffy) i would go as far to say it's wildly unrealistic. i don't see a world where Ra's would let Jason anywhere *near* Damian, bc Jason was Talia's pet project that he didn't approve of. that all said, there's something very interesting about how they *could've* met and them potentially bonding during that timeframe. them being somewhat brotherly during this time because Jason sees Bruce in Damian and sort of latches onto the kid and Damian is full of wonder hearing real stories about Batman and Robin, then that getting violently ripped away by Jason leaving the League is fun to me. it's fun how that could affect them within the Batfam and all. it's super fanon to me, but i do not care. i will eat it up

Bad Dad Clark Kent/Good Dad Lex Luthor - i will admit as a late, i've been less and less kind to this particular fanon bc of everything i've argued with people about, *this* one seems the most pervasive as misunderstood fanon. i don't mind when fanon exists, my gripe is when ppl try to claim it's canon. and the *arguments* i've had over this with people who can never seem to cite an actual comic are... frustrating. but that said, i think there is something fun to this strictly in fanon. the duality of who you expect to accept Kon and who you expect to hurt him being flipped is just sort of fun for the occasional guilty pleasure fic. it can make Kon's internal conflict a bit more interesting. the same goes for the Jon favoritism from Clark, it's not a canon thing (and i rlly wish ppl understood how complicated the timeline of Kon and Jon is and any distance from Clark toward Kon isn't malice, it's that Kon is from a timeline that Clark does not remember in the current canon so Clark just straight up doesn't know the poor kid.) but it's sort of fun to give Kon that complex of being overlooked and forgotten sometimes. making Kon just a *bit* more Luthor than Kent will *always* appeal to me in fanfic, especially if he *knows* it's wrong but craves approval from anyone who will give it.

Good Dad Bruce Wayne - i'll die on the hill Bruce is canonically a shitty father. maybe not to the extreme some people write him as, but he's not great at it. that said, i enjoy it in fanfiction. sometimes, i just want silly fluff or hurt/comfort where Bruce finally gets it right and manages to comfort whatever Batkid is in the fic. one of my favorite fics of all time is hinged on Bruce being a good dad, so i think it's just fun to explore how good the relationships *could* be, if Bruce was slightly less of an asshole. i usually prefer him as an asshole, but there are times i want low stakes nonsense.

Gotham Rogues Having Soft Spots for Robin(s) - just about every Rogue in Gotham has done something absolutely irredeemable, and most of them don't like or care about anyone in the Batfamily. but if there's a fic where one of the Robins inexplicably is sort of close with a Rogue and they have a cute silly relationship out of it? I'll eat it up i fear. Steph and the Riddler are besties? I'll believe it. Tim and Scarecrow get along pretty well? give me ten of these. Rogues protecting Robins just hits a spot. the unexpected nature of the relationship, as well as the fact they see each other regularly, can make a lot of good fodder.

i have two ideas/au if tenma ever appears in VR

first one. He is like a big brother figuur to haru, he used to babysit him when haru was younger and lets him have days with his new dog (sadly sasuke cannot live forever)

second idea. tenma for some reason becomes the new coach for one of the rival teams and his honestly just trying to get the kids to get rid of the toxic and bad habits they got from their past coach and make the team a safe place for them.

big bro Tenma 🫶 after babysitting haru I can see him still appearing every now and then as a cool older kid (or wherever the timeline would place his age at) who gives important advice for the situation, on purpose or not! and he definitely deserves a new dog!!
