I already made a post about this but like after witnessing the First Doctor in action, I completely understand how the Doctor and the Master became friends. For a long time I thought the Doctor looked at the Master and thought “I can fix him” and when Missy said “I need you to know we’re not so different” I thought it was hinting towards the Oncoming Storm and the Doctor’s inner darkness… nah, the First Doctor just has incredibly manic energy. They probably met in Time Lord detention after the Master committed arson and the Doctor knocked someone unconscious with a table leg (definitely something that would happen). I’m now pretty sure that the Master was the calm, levelheaded friend whilst the Doctor was just completely off his rocker and frequently had to be begged to calm down. I’ve accepted this head canon as fact because it’s all making so much more sense.

Out of every single relationship in the Whoniverse, whatever the Doctor and the Master have going on just hits different. Like a rock. I’m sure everyone feels this way about their fave Doctor ship, but my experience is that once you go Thoschei, you cannot go back. Given the narrative symmetry, character foiling, interwoven parallels, tragically dramatic irony, frustratingly unspeakable ambiguous romance that defies traditional ship canonization in the true chaotic spirit of Doctor Who, and a unique backstory setup that allows the characters to have history that other individuals cannot match, while fate (and the format of the show) pushes them together over and over again indefinitely, without hope of lasting reconnection lest the setup break, the Doctor and Master’s codependent anti-soulmate life or death partnership arguably (narratively) cheapens every other pairing beyond comparison. Their tragedy never leaves you. (And keeps you up at night)

one thing I love about dr who lore is that you can be selective about what you take as canon. Because let’s be so fr, the canon is barely canon in dr who.

there are some set events, but everything else is, in dr who terms, in flux. The writers decide to ignore things all the time, and I think it’s iconic that as a fandom we do the same. it helps that a good few writers aren’t the best of people, so you can make the excuse that they didn’t know wtf they were doing running the show (and did they? Who’s to say?)

i want an episode of doctor who where someone important to the doctor dies and all the pain and heartbreak of all their lives piles up and they get so broken and so full of hate that this keeps happening and why can’t they just be happy and why is the universe so cruel that they turn evil and then while out and about being evil and not giving a fuck about saving people they run into the master and the master is shook that the doctor has changed bc how? that’s impossible the doctor and the master are opposing forces! it’s their whole dynamic now everything’s out of balance! and so they make it their mission to show the doctor how much good there is in the universe and the doctor is cold and harsh and vulnerable and heartbroken but the master whisks the both of them off on an adventure to demonstrate all the brilliant wonderful extraordinary happy parts of the universe but what finally gets through to the doctor is that it’s the master showing them all this. they’re so far gone that the master is trying to fix them. and they realise that the both of them have more in common than they think and that they can see it from each other’s perspectives. and then they kiss

I’ve got a new head canon that, for Time Lords, a fellow Time Lord asking you to work on an experiment with them is the height of romance. I don’t know, something about how the Time Lords of Gallifrey prize their intelligence above all else, and how they’re a predominantly selfish species, having another of your kind - who is supposed to hoard their knowledge to remain superior in whatever way they can - say to you “I will happily share what I know so we can find a solution together and enrich our shared intellects” must be incredibly romantic. So whenever we see the Doctor and the Master working on an experiment in Classic Who (Pertwee and Delgado specifically) or even just see them working together for any reason? Yeah, that’s a date, and their flirting is passive-aggressive banter and threats to destroy planets (to be more precise, that’s the Master’s flirting).

i’m still so annoyed that they had the perfect chance to do a body swap episode with the doctor and the master in power of the doctor but instead they chose a less cool version of that
