Where did Canary!Jimmy come from?

After a deepdive, I believe that there is no one person who can be accredited with this. There is one very notable presence who was ahead of the curb, vyeoh, their imagination would go on to inspire us in early 2022. It is thanks to Vyeoh and every artist from 2022 that it is where it is today. Thank you to every artist, every writer, everyone who helped spread it. But there are a few that I think could be directly accredited.

First, we need to acknowledge the video that was the last straw - 100 Hours Hardcore SMP. This series included Grian, Scar, and Joel, in janaury-febuary of 2022, during the period between Last Life and Double Life. Several guests, including Jimmy, were on.

When Jimmy was visiting, Grian died. People called him an omen, a harbringer of death. After Third Life, Last Life, and Empires season one apocalypse, 100 Hours SMP was the final notion needed to FULLY kickstart Canary!Jimmy, evident in fanart dated Febuary of 2022.

One of the earliest instances, if not the earliest, would belong to: vyeoh, whose art work depicted Canary!Jimmy far ahead of the game, in November of 2021.

Meetings between the Empires SMP Players were frequent, ensuring that everyone on the server was comfortable, happy, and safe. Not only that, but it helped them to stay updated on each other’s lives and any news from the hub servers. After the Hermitcraft crossover, it was also a time for whoever had most recently visited the hub worlds to distribute letters that had been sent from their friends on the other server.

Jimmy had a tendency to open each letter individually, only opening the next when he had already read the one before it. It allowed him to give his full attention to whatever he was reading, instead of splitting his mind between multiple letters and the responses he would have to write.

Flipping to the final missive, Jimmy realized that it wasn’t a folded page or in any envelope, but simply a flat card. In fact, it wasn’t from any of the Hermits at all. Upon it read a few words in fancy script:

I have need of you, My Canary.

Jimmy sat with it for a moment, digesting the meaning before flipping the card over to read the back.

You’ll know when.

Jimmy sighed, setting the card down to rub at his temples. It had been a while since he had been called by the Lady Death to signal the end of a server or life. He had taken on the role without explicit instruction for the Life Series games, but it was a different feeling to be called away from his server specifically to take this role.

He slipped the card into his vest, hiding it away from anyone’s prying eyes. Unfortunately, he wasn’t quite fast enough.

“What came in for you, Jim?” Sausage asked, gesturing toward the card now tucked into the inner pocket of Jimmy’s vest.

“Nothing interesting,” Jimmy lied, not wanting to have to share.

“Come on, just share.”

“Sure, I got a summons from a goddess to do a job for her,” Jimmy rolled his eyes, telling the truth only because it was so wildly unexpected that no one would believe it.

Pix looked over and simply stared at Jimmy for a moment before giving him a nod. “Maybe we should let Jimmy have his privacy.”

Jimmy then recalled that Pix had sworn himself to Lady Death in Season One of Empires, having held the Vigil in Her honor. Pix likely recognized the feeling of Death from the card and could see that Jimmy was telling the truth.

Jimmy returned the nod with a small smile.

Did grian feel more watcher-like this season to anyone else? Sure he controls what the wildcards are and all that... but did you notice him being more overconfident.

Both his deaths this session was due to him being careless... like he wouldn't be killed. Like he feels invulnerable. (Who else is popularly portrayed as arrogant? The watchers!)

And the canary's curse. He told jimmy he would make sure it comes true. ( Who made the canary's curse? The watchers!)

I feel like the watchers have regained some influence on him. Something gave the watchers more influence on him this season... maybe something in the last life series. Who won the last life series? Scar...

Gang let's leave the Canary Curse behind. It broke in Secret Life. Vestigial traits can carry over, sure, but it's over. Mumbo has only died immediately after Jim twice, and now this one time hes died first- he's not the new canary, and neither is Lizzie, who just had really bad luck and is doing amazing this season. It sucks that has only been happening to them, while Grian died first in Real Life and, by that logic, would also be a canary.

That being said it would be so funny if Mumbo woke up back on Hermitcraft and had to comb some feathers out of his mustache. But let's leave it at that ey? Just a little refrence, a little "ough, you had it rough" symbolism when they wake up in another server- whisked away by the resuscitation device.

I have no idea how Jimmy feels about all the canary symbolism now, but as of Sos SMP he had basically accepted it (a quote where he named his elytra "Canary wings" and said "they're a part of me now, it's not lore", it's worth pointing out this is solidly after Secret Life). Hence I will keep using it as inspiration for his character and for some refrences. However we should take an actual look at canary symbolism.

Well, doesn't that seem like our vagyely unlucky guy. He's always hopeful, very optimistic, worried about his friends safety (even if he isn't allied with them), and can be relatively vulnerable. Most of all, after so many times of dying first (and being targeted in other series), he's kept his head up high, and kept his eyes on the prize, always swearing that this will be his season. He's the most resilient person I can think of. This is how we can still characterize him as a canary.

Remember, the Curse isn't just about laughs and poking fun at an unlucky player, the Curse has been broken, and you shouldn't force the Curse on other players. That's all thank uuuuu <3

Finished a lil piece!

I’m just on cleanups for most of the project but wanted to finish at least a small bit to see what the final was gonna look like for this scene
