Native plant enthusiasts in Ontario, Canada, this is for you.
Leaving Facebook, I miss the Ontario Native Plant Gardening group. I couldn't find any communities on alternative social media so I'm working on making my own. Although Facebook will always be the mecca for the older generation of gardeners, I think it's worth forging some communities elsewhere, even if they're smaller, for those of us who deleted Meta apps. There's benefits to small communities, too, like less off-topic spam and less bad advice.
The Goal:
To create a space to share pictures, information, resources, news, and ask questions, get advice, help newbies get started, and trade seeds and plants, specific to PLANTS NATIVE TO ONTARIO, CANADA.
Gardening of highly cultivated or exotic plants (e.g., most garden veggies and herbs) is off-topic; while it may be discussed incidentally, posts/activity that is totally focused on it will be removed. Discussion of removing invasive plants is also allowed, while promoting the planting of invasive plants is not allowed.
Links:
Discord: DM me (@vormoranox) for link because I don't want to invite bot spam by posting it widely here.
BlueSky "custom feed" (like it and pin it): https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:c4bxovkrkuszkrw6m25tyiix/feed/aaac75apohl
Reddit (VERY barebones as of Feb 2025, setting up a subreddit is kind of crazy and I've only basically picked the name and effectively nothing else and I'm very new to this): /r/OntarioNativePlants

Here I am acting like it's the 1900s and ordering my fall bulbs from a catalogue 🤣 I know it's not environmentally friendly but it's so much more fun and easier than going through their website (or any website for that matter). I only gave myself $100 budget to experiment with since I do not have any experience with bulbs. I mostly ordered pinks and yellows coz I want my spring garden to look extremely gae 🏳️‍🌈 So exciting! For my fellow Canadians out there who want to buy some fall bulbs, Veseys coupons are available till August 16th. Notspon.

To all my fellow Canadians:
If you have been putting off making any purchases, may I encourage you to do that RIGHT THE FUCK NOW.
Trump's tariffs against Canadian goods have give into effect, and Canada's retaliatory tariffs are going into effect on Tuesday. This will affect:
Pretty much any food product
Furniture of all kinds
Clothing, fabric, yarn, wool, linen, cotton...
Technology: LEDs, household appliances, phones, computers, etc.
Video games and game consoles
Board games! I wish I was joking!
Lumber and wooden items.
Paper and paper products, including books, notebooks, binders, folders...
Office supplies
Alcohol
And so much more! All this will increase in price by 25% in the very near future. So, brace for impact, stock up on necessary items, and hope for the fucking best.
ETA: well, Trump seems to have backed down for the time being. We'll see what happens in the meanwhile, but keep your eyes peeled.

I desperately need more botany/gardening/solarpunk/foraging posts that aren’t so fucking American-centric
“European plants are invasive” okay, in America— but which ones are invasive HERE, like are Spanish species invasive to England? Are French plants invasive to England??

Let's learn more about the impressive but potentially invasive ornamental plant introduced from North America, the Canadian Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis).
Despite its invasive nature, Canadian Goldenrod is an important food source for a wide range of insects including the Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus). Cattle and horses as well as deer can safely eat Canadian Goldenrod, and the flowers are not associated with allergies in humans since they do not produce airborne pollen. The plant is used in traditional herbal medicine by indigenous Americans for fevers and respiratory illnesses.
This gold-medallist invasive species has become an ecological menace in Europe and East Asia, where Chinese experts blame it for the extinction of over 30 species of native Chinese plants. In the UK, this admittedly attractive plant was introduced as an ornamental in the 19th century but it soon fell out of favour with gardeners because it was too aggressive.
I am unsure whether the Canadian Goldenrod in my garden is a survivor of a old garden design or if my late Dad added it to the garden, but it is confined as a specimen to a small patch in my garden. New plants are removed if found elsewhere on my property, so it won’t win any gold medals for invasiveness here.

Being a child of immigrants and/or spending extended amounts of time in countries outside of the one your family immigrated to is so confusing sometimes, especially with shows. Like, I don’t know what other people have seen or not seen. For example: I watched a LOT of Slugterra bc it was on the Teletoons network (Quebec network), but I’ve met like 3 ppl who remember it. Same with the TinTin movie, Astérix and Obelix, In the Night Garden, Detentionaire, Fangbone, Jimmy two shoes, the deep, are you afraid of the dark, Dragon hunters, etc. Also, having watched many of them in French (which I am very bad at, especially when I was a kid which was when I watched these programs), I have a rlly hard time explaining what actually happens and I only remember stills or the name in French instead of English. Anyways this makes it all sound like a fever dream to my USAmerican friends, i.e. “you know that show where it’s all like puppet 2D animation and the guy is running from his zombie school detention?” Or “remember that show where a bunch of people in weird costumes made noises and there were tiny people who marched outside their home?” Or “what do you mean you don’t remember the show about the big guy and the little guy on floating islands slaying dragons, one of which farted to fly?”
Anyways gotta love being second gen
