My biggest problem with how the current Batman issues are written is that there's like no consequences for Bruce? Like you're telling me he basically drugged and kidnapped Jason and gave him like crippling anxiety just for it to go away in a couple issues later and now that it's gone he wants to help Bruce and is willing to give up his life for him??? Is this even Jason at this point??? If anything Jason should want to help him out the least. Not only that but how everyone wants to help him so badly is so weird???? Like you're telling me none of them is holding a grudge or just doesn't want to get involved in that shit??

Not only that but all the characters are written so weird and inconsistent in general??? Maybe it's a good thing Chip hasn't added Duke, Cass, or Steph in the mix cause yikessss their characters would get destroyed and it would take like 10 years to undo it.

I’m so tired of constantly trying to make sure I haven’t gotten a small detail of someone’s characterisation wrong in TikToks, posts, fics.

People read things and have different interpretations for the same thing, WHICH IS FINE, but don’t go bashing anybody who disagrees with your opinion for it.

Something I never got about Strangers is how some people interpreted it to be entirely about cannibalism and Isaiah? On my first listen, when I didn't know the story behind it, I always thought it was about ethel's mother, Willoughby, and the town she grew up in over anything. She feels like a disappointment, like she made it out of town but never truly left. When she asks 'am I feeling you sick' I believe it is a broader sentiment. Does her situation make her mother feel sick? Does the way she turned out make Willoughby, where ever he is, feel sick? Does her story, the haunting nature of it, make the town sick? Are they disgusted by her? Does she keep them from sleeping? Of course cannibalism is a huge part of strangers, but there's also so much more to it that's hidden beneath the surface. Isaiah is not the only aspect of ethel's story. She is more than Isaiah.

One thing about Duke that I feel needs a canon deep dive in terms of all of the batfamily is how Duke wasn't there for the traumas that the family has experienced and how he changes the entire dynamic of the batfamily as a result.

I can explain by getting a little personal. My family went through a lot of pain bc my brother was born about 15 weeks early, and barely survived. But I was born a few years after and saw all of that stuff as normal. Me not knowing/experiencing that traumatic event changed the family dynamic. my mother has called it filling in the cracks(basically calling me the glue of the family).

Now how does this relate to Duke? Well, the closest he knew of what the joker did to Barbara and Jason was likely news articles his parents talked quietly about after he went to bed. He had maybe interacted with Batman twice before his family was targeted, and never saw most of Damian's arc to redeem himself. He was in the foster system when Bruce died, and didn't form we are Robin until down the line. Duke joined long after these events occurred or after they were mostly resolved. His view of the batfamily is normal normal to him. It's not like dick's, who likely longs for a time when Bruce wasn't so closed off, or before Jason was killed. Duke's normal isn't like Tim or Steph's, who joined when Bruce was grieving Jason, and along with Cass and Damian, their normal was shattered by Bruce's "death".

Duke knows these people are messed up, don't get me wrong, but the ways they are messed up is just who they are to him from his introduction to them. And the difference between being there in someone's past vs. only knowing about it after the fact is something that I find relatable with Duke.

It's the reason that I think Duke and Jason get along fairly well outside of just their similar stories. Duke may have heard stories of how jason was before, but it's never in the context of Jason not being alive or an in memoriam. He compares those stories about jason to the way he is now instead of vice versa.

The same can be said for Damian and Cass. He's heard stories about how they were raised to kill with no mercy and made an incredible journey to not do that anymore. But to him it's context rather than who they are. He may be one of the only people who truly sees Damian as someone trying to get through middle school while being Robin. And the dynamic he has with Cass has so much love and support when either of them is going through something.

Duke, whether he knows it or not changes several of the dynamics of the batfamily. I realized that I've never made this post and I feel like I have to.

btw.. if ur a new ethel/hayden fan and take the time to look into the art and enjoy it and engage with it in your own way, nobody is talking about u when they talk about new 'tiktok fans'. u guys r cool. the problem is when new fans water down her art, bc truly its art, to something as simple as xyz and then claim to be the biggest "ethel cain" fan there is. so loud yet so wrong. this new age of media has gotten too comfortable watering down absolutely everything put online, and its rlly weird and concerning. there was some trend on TikTok a while back before i stopped using it where people would go to art museums or art gallery's and then record themselves making fun of a piece of art that they think they could recreate. it just shows they don't do any type of research on art they subject themselves to viewing or engaging with. most art in modern art museums and art gallery's look simplistic, sometimes you'll even see what looks to be just a "basic color" on a canvas. but there's always a deeper meaning. trust me, nobody is allowing something basic and foolish to be displayed in something as prestigious as an art community hub. so anyway, this is just one talking point that proves the larger point in discussion. people love to water things down or say something awfully weird about art before looking into it, if they look into it at all. and i want @vacilators to see this cuz ur the most relatable person ive seen talking about this epidemic.
