Something I never got about Strangers is how some people interpreted it to be entirely about cannibalism and Isaiah? On my first listen, when I didn't know the story behind it, I always thought it was about ethel's mother, Willoughby, and the town she grew up in over anything. She feels like a disappointment, like she made it out of town but never truly left. When she asks 'am I feeling you sick' I believe it is a broader sentiment. Does her situation make her mother feel sick? Does the way she turned out make Willoughby, where ever he is, feel sick? Does her story, the haunting nature of it, make the town sick? Are they disgusted by her? Does she keep them from sleeping? Of course cannibalism is a huge part of strangers, but there's also so much more to it that's hidden beneath the surface. Isaiah is not the only aspect of ethel's story. She is more than Isaiah.

hayden would HATE some of yall
i know some of you lot think you're inherently better than others because you don't listen to popular music and listen to art like hayden’s more often than not, but acting like people are inherently less than for not liking some of the songs on perverts is weird as fuck and y'all need to cut it out.
hayden did not make perverts to push away fans who only like her for american teenager or crush, she did it because she felt like making some fucking drone music. and we stan her for it. it’s not going to be everyone's cup of tea, and that doesn't mean they are inferior to you because you DO like it.
and those who are hating hayden for making perverts is a whole fucking different story. grow the fuck up, if you don’t like it, respect the art and move the fuck on. hayden isn’t making music for us, its for her, and she’s happy to share it with us. all you hateful ass gremlins can go shut the fuck up, please.
listen to what you want, and lets not put people down for fucking music, you guys act like tiny children who have never spent a single second of your life being open minded

i want to talk about the significance of the song that plays during mark and ambers break up scene in s2 ep 7 of invincible: televangelism by ethel cain
Firstly we need to quickly summarize the story behind where this song comes from. Preachers daughter is a concept album follows the story of the character of ethel cain, a religious girl from the south as she experienced her first love die, becomes entangled with dangerous men, gets sold into sex work and eventually ends up getting killed and cannibalized by her lover.
that’s a very brief summary and I encourage you to listen to the full album because it’s better understood that way!
How does televangelism relate to mark and amber? It’s just a sad somber song that fits the mood of the scene right?
While yes it does fit the somber mood of the scene it has much deeper meaning to what’s happening, the songs chosen in invincible are done so VERY deliberately! In preachers daughter televangelism is track 11 and comes after august underground and ptolemaea. In accordance to the story of the album this is when the characters body has already passed (in august underground) and televangelism is the acceptance of that death with presumably the character of Ethel’s soul moving on during this song.

Back to mark and amber;
while they had been together for most of the season it clearly is a relationship that has been dying from the moment they got back together. It’s a painfully relatable situation to many, loving someone so much and wanting to be there for them but life getting in the way over and over.
You see it in their coffee date when mark returns from thraxa and how mark remarks how “this feels like a bad first date”. And mark missing being there for amber when her grandfather passed, and amber wanting to reach out for him but choosing to hold it in because she knows what he’s been through. This does neither of them good and simply adds to the internal strain and turmoil of their already strained relationship.
Then episode 7. Mark comes to her triumphant about how he has very very little time off that’s been barely allowed by cecil. To celebrate they have their iconic scene set to feel it by d4vid. It is the highest point of their relationship no doubt and incredibly sweet, which is them immediately undercut by anissa and her threatening to kill amber.
Mark and her fly off to fight and then mark returns to amber in her dorm. Who is understandably freaking out over what just happened.
I’ve seen imbeciles paint her reaction as “weakness”. Tell me quickly how you would react to a god human who could severe your head from your body with only a twitch of their fingers while you were on a date with your s/o? It’s a miracle she didn’t have a heart attack, amber is an undoubtedly strong willed individual so I will see none of that bullshit here.
Back to their breakup when televangelism begins to play. This scene is them not just ending their relationship but also the acceptance of the death of it. How even if anissa didn’t attack and threat amber, this was never going to last in the long run. They’ve been in denial for a while about their own feelings about being together but this is the acceptance of those feelings. They can’t be involved with each other like this without ultimately hurting one another, it will hurt but the pain will be less to let go than to hold on.
I won’t even lie the scene itself made me cry because at the time of it airing it hadn’t been very long since going through a break up of my own with a long term partner. It hit very close to home
This is an ultimately beautiful scene that I’m so glad had this song as a backing track to it. One of my favorite albums ever in one of my favorite shows ever. I truly do hope we see more of amber in the future and have more Ethel Cain songs in the future too
if you read this far u get a ghost shaped cookie 👻🍪

not a poem but i just came home and on the way here i listened to ethel cain and i cant not write about this.
when i listened to perverts for the first time, i forced my boyfriend to go through the whole 1.5h project in silence and while doing nothing. the whole time i just sat, zoned out and listened to the music. during that time i came up with a whole music project idea for myself. and its not like i heard her album and decided i want to make one like hers, no, i was so deep inside the ambience and the atmosphere she created, that i literally travelled through my mind and found so many things i could make music about. really meaningful and complex, deep topics id love to explore and express with my art.
until now, i made music about more surface level shit, and although i enjoyed it, it didnt feel that authentic and i always had to switch into this "character" to make the songs.
i never released any of it.
but now im dedicated. i want this project to come to life and let me drop the weight off of my brain, where all of it was stored and i never gave it attention, even though they're heavy and affect my life without realisation.
this whole post was supposed to be about my love for Hayden's work. she's so insanely inspiring, artistic, ethereal. she's my idol and my inspiration. i even imagined myself opening for her show one day, probably delusional, but it gives me hope and motivation.
i just love music, and Hayden's work is almost as if the definition of the word music. spiritual, inspirational and deep musical pieces.
:) sorry for the rant <3

sirius escaped that house, but he still sits up a little straighter when someone grazes against his chair. he still holds his breath when his patronymic graces a person’s lips or stares back at him from a piece of parchment. he still has those crimson scars coruscating across his chest, and they still sting on a hot summer day. his brother still looks at him with a poignant yet abhorrent expression that sirius can only comprehend as baleful vexation. he can run off to a family that beams the warmth of a thousand sun-cycles, but his roots will continue to taint and dirty everything he touches: he can always reject his father but he cannot escape his mother's blood.

the sensationalisation of true crime and murder in our generation and the general public’s gross prying into the lives of real life victims along with the minimisation of murder in art and lack of critical thought and analysis in fiction upsets me very much. wdym u want to speak disgustingly about someones real life experiences and bring up their trauma on the internet but u can’t sit and consider fake murder??

Ethel Cain is so real about the way media is consumed these days and how everything is “for the joke” like actually I am sick of the jokes! I want to have in depth conversations about what I’m reading/watching/playing not repeat the same overdone joke that’s only funny because it’s unoriginal enough that a whole fanbase can get it/parrot it. So many fandoms could have a renaissance if they put that energy into creation and discussion instead of lols

Sin Worse Than Whiskey
Summary: With a preacher father and the threat of Hell, it's no wonder that you repress your longing to feel comfortable in your body. When Rhett returns to Wabang as the youth pastor at your father's church, both of you have repressed sins that you can't keep down.
Pairing: Rhett Abbott x AFAB!Reader BUT reader is a repressed transman and Rhett is a repressed bisexual
Rating: nsfw content, 18+, mdni!
Warnings: Talk of religion and homosexuality as a sin. Heavy religious themes, talk of body dysphoria and self hatred for both Rhett and reader. Use of slurs and talk of "fixing" yourself as in "praying away the gay"
Word Count: 635
Author Note: Please make sure you read the warnings provided. If you like my writing and would like to support me, I'd really appreciate if you would check out my Ko-Fi. I use these donations to help with the cost of groceries. If Ko-Fi is not your thing, I also have a list of things I use at Uni. That being said, Please don't feel any pressure to support; just a simple reblog also helps. ❤️ This was inspired by The Starling Girl, Preacher's Daughter by Ethel Cain, a little bit by Midnight Mass and with lots of gentle encouraging by @sebsxphia I love you ❤️

"Remember when you said if you were a boy, you'd want to look like Rhett?"
"Shut up!" You grunt, pushing your sister on her shoulder.
"Girls!" your mother shouts, already way ahead of you and at the car.
It was true, you had said that, but that was in the comfort of your bedroom, not for your sister to be blabbing about where anyone could hear.
There had always been lingering thoughts in the back of your head about what it might be like to live as a boy with short hair and a flat chest, but that was never going to happen.
Once, when you were young and stupid, around twelve, you asked your mother why you hadn't been born a boy and how you wished you had been. This had gotten your mother irrationally angry, ranting at you about how God made you exactly as He wanted you to be and to change anything would be blasphemous. After that, you never brought it up again.
You wanted to be good and holy; you wanted to get into heaven like the rest of your family. You tried to forget about those feelings and even tried to counteract them by dressing and acting as girly as you could. It was going pretty well, too, until Rhett Abbott came back to town again.
Your father, the preacher at your church, had hired him to look after the youth worship and although you were eighteen now and no longer part of the youth group, your father asked you to sit in and observe instead of just letting you have the job. You had argued with him about it for quite a while, but he just kept saying that you needed to observe someone else doing it before he trusted you to do it.
"Don't ever say that out loud again,” you hiss at your sister, low enough for no one else in the van to hear. Who Knows what your parents would do if they heard you or anyone else speak those words again.
The first time that you sit in on the youth group, Rhett can’t seem to stop looking at you. It was probably just because you were neither a youth nor a pastor and still sitting in on his group, but his eyes still made you shift in your seat.
“Why are you in the youth group?” Rhett asks as most of the children are filing out of the room. “You’re eighteen now, ain’t you?”
“I am,” you nod with a soft smile. “I’m just here to observe.”
Rhett looks at you for a moment, then his face softens. “Ah. Did I take your job?” He asks, swallowing a swear word that threatens to escape just after he realizes.
“No, No,” you hold up your hands, not wanting the older man to feel guilty about doing the job your father clearly thinks you are unfit for. “To tell you the truth, I don’t think my father would’ve given it to me anyway,” you admit, trying to push out a soft smile that doesn’t look too sad.
“I’m sure that’s not true.” Rhett shifts awkwardly on the linoleum floor, and his shoes squeak to fill the deafening silence, “I’ll… see you tomorrow?”
You frown. “Youth group is only held on Sundays.”
“I know I just… I thought since your dad was the preacher and all, you’d be coming to daily mass. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to assume,” Rhett apologizes.
The truth was, you’d never gone to daily mass before. You’d always been in school just like your younger siblings, but since you graduated from one of the strictest Catholic schools in all of Wyoming, now would be the time. “No, I… I’ll be here tomorrow,” you nod, walking before you can embarrass yourself further.
—— Thanks for reading. Chapter 2 will be coming at you next week ❤️
