Something I never got about Strangers is how some people interpreted it to be entirely about cannibalism and Isaiah? On my first listen, when I didn't know the story behind it, I always thought it was about ethel's mother, Willoughby, and the town she grew up in over anything. She feels like a disappointment, like she made it out of town but never truly left. When she asks 'am I feeling you sick' I believe it is a broader sentiment. Does her situation make her mother feel sick? Does the way she turned out make Willoughby, where ever he is, feel sick? Does her story, the haunting nature of it, make the town sick? Are they disgusted by her? Does she keep them from sleeping? Of course cannibalism is a huge part of strangers, but there's also so much more to it that's hidden beneath the surface. Isaiah is not the only aspect of ethel's story. She is more than Isaiah.

good morning i fucking hate surface level tiktok fans for artists like hayden. only calling her ethel, completely disregarding the entire preachers daughter album (and the rest of her discography at that) and only paying attention to american teenager or strangers, thinking it’s a white girl girlblogger song or a pomegranate feral dog cannibalism poetry song or any misinterpreted shit like that. don’t even get me fucking STARTED on the rise of completely shocked “fans” when they all started to choke and vomit and pass out over the perverts album…like girl…if you were an actual fan you’d know she has a whole ep called inbred…but WHATEVER!! something else that pisses me off is that when hayden’s music gets so completely watered down by brainrotted coquette girl bloggers who claim to listen to her but then also listen to gracie abrams and taylor swift…i literally had a friend like that and she was always calling her weird and being transphobic toward her.. uhm bitch ur not delicate ur 250 pounds ETHEL CAIN IS NOT FOR YOU. LEAVE HER TO THE FREAKS ON TUMBLR WHO UNDERSTAND HER!! i hate yall im so angry

i want to talk about the significance of the song that plays during mark and ambers break up scene in s2 ep 7 of invincible: televangelism by ethel cain
Firstly we need to quickly summarize the story behind where this song comes from. Preachers daughter is a concept album follows the story of the character of ethel cain, a religious girl from the south as she experienced her first love die, becomes entangled with dangerous men, gets sold into sex work and eventually ends up getting killed and cannibalized by her lover.
that’s a very brief summary and I encourage you to listen to the full album because it’s better understood that way!
How does televangelism relate to mark and amber? It’s just a sad somber song that fits the mood of the scene right?
While yes it does fit the somber mood of the scene it has much deeper meaning to what’s happening, the songs chosen in invincible are done so VERY deliberately! In preachers daughter televangelism is track 11 and comes after august underground and ptolemaea. In accordance to the story of the album this is when the characters body has already passed (in august underground) and televangelism is the acceptance of that death with presumably the character of Ethel’s soul moving on during this song.

Back to mark and amber;
while they had been together for most of the season it clearly is a relationship that has been dying from the moment they got back together. It’s a painfully relatable situation to many, loving someone so much and wanting to be there for them but life getting in the way over and over.
You see it in their coffee date when mark returns from thraxa and how mark remarks how “this feels like a bad first date”. And mark missing being there for amber when her grandfather passed, and amber wanting to reach out for him but choosing to hold it in because she knows what he’s been through. This does neither of them good and simply adds to the internal strain and turmoil of their already strained relationship.
Then episode 7. Mark comes to her triumphant about how he has very very little time off that’s been barely allowed by cecil. To celebrate they have their iconic scene set to feel it by d4vid. It is the highest point of their relationship no doubt and incredibly sweet, which is them immediately undercut by anissa and her threatening to kill amber.
Mark and her fly off to fight and then mark returns to amber in her dorm. Who is understandably freaking out over what just happened.
I’ve seen imbeciles paint her reaction as “weakness”. Tell me quickly how you would react to a god human who could severe your head from your body with only a twitch of their fingers while you were on a date with your s/o? It’s a miracle she didn’t have a heart attack, amber is an undoubtedly strong willed individual so I will see none of that bullshit here.
Back to their breakup when televangelism begins to play. This scene is them not just ending their relationship but also the acceptance of the death of it. How even if anissa didn’t attack and threat amber, this was never going to last in the long run. They’ve been in denial for a while about their own feelings about being together but this is the acceptance of those feelings. They can’t be involved with each other like this without ultimately hurting one another, it will hurt but the pain will be less to let go than to hold on.
I won’t even lie the scene itself made me cry because at the time of it airing it hadn’t been very long since going through a break up of my own with a long term partner. It hit very close to home
This is an ultimately beautiful scene that I’m so glad had this song as a backing track to it. One of my favorite albums ever in one of my favorite shows ever. I truly do hope we see more of amber in the future and have more Ethel Cain songs in the future too
if you read this far u get a ghost shaped cookie 👻🍪

sirius escaped that house, but he still sits up a little straighter when someone grazes against his chair. he still holds his breath when his patronymic graces a person’s lips or stares back at him from a piece of parchment. he still has those crimson scars coruscating across his chest, and they still sting on a hot summer day. his brother still looks at him with a poignant yet abhorrent expression that sirius can only comprehend as baleful vexation. he can run off to a family that beams the warmth of a thousand sun-cycles, but his roots will continue to taint and dirty everything he touches: he can always reject his father but he cannot escape his mother's blood.

the sensationalisation of true crime and murder in our generation and the general public’s gross prying into the lives of real life victims along with the minimisation of murder in art and lack of critical thought and analysis in fiction upsets me very much. wdym u want to speak disgustingly about someones real life experiences and bring up their trauma on the internet but u can’t sit and consider fake murder??

Ethel Cain is so real about the way media is consumed these days and how everything is “for the joke” like actually I am sick of the jokes! I want to have in depth conversations about what I’m reading/watching/playing not repeat the same overdone joke that’s only funny because it’s unoriginal enough that a whole fanbase can get it/parrot it. So many fandoms could have a renaissance if they put that energy into creation and discussion instead of lols

something i hate about you bitches is when yall are so fucking impatient when it comes to artists releasing music.. taylor swift can put out like 3 half assed shitty albums in the course of a year and yall still listen to it and claim it’s the best thing you’ve ever heard.
hayden on the other hand actually takes her time to make good music she and others can connect with. the span of when she started writing preachers daughter to when she put it out she put out sad music for sad people, changed her artist name, put out carpet bed, put out golden age, then inbred, THEN preachers daughter..like i don’t understand why people say hayden takes too long to make music like of course she does it’s cuz she fucking CARES ABOUT MAKING GOOD MUSIC!!
like sorry ur impatient and can’t handle not listening to an artist with similar albums they pulled out of their ass? it’s like yall are fent addicts that cannot possibly be sober for a millisecond..i hate yall u bitches piss me off so fucking BADDDDDDDDDD
@bodycrosses pls back me up ik ur ass gets me

Did Hayden ever think about what she would do to my mental health by writing “And I spend my life watching it go by from the sidelines.”?

this might be very controversial. i need to go on a rant. i need to see more ethel cain fans who are as into the music and the story behind in as i am. not just the tip of the iceberg on cannibalism and the basis of strangers. i need fans that are deep into the aesthetic of it, girls that have grow up in the south, been religious, understand it. girls that have gone through hayden’s whole work of art and not just preachers daughter. please. please. please. i need more than tiktok fans. it pains me everytime i see a shitty video on tiktok about ethel cain that is about the same joke about cannibalism over and over. tell me you get this.

sorry for this long rant but i need to know if anyone else feels the same way.
(i wrote this when i was in class lmaoo)
bro, tell me why i’m actually about to cry. i saw hayden announced new merch dropping next week, and i got so hyped. i was reading through the comments, and apparently, she’s bringing back some of her older designs too. that’s when i started really thinking about her music—the vibe, the layers of instruments, the lyrics, the meanings, everything. i got so emotional i literally started tearing up.
maybe it’s because i have the absolute worst fomo. i found ethel in august, around the end of the preacher’s daughter era. when i first discovered her and got into her music, i felt this instant spark, this deep connection to her art, like she was saying things i’d been waiting to hear. and what i think is getting me down is that i missed out on seeing her grow and release the albums that shaped her into the artist she is now. i’m insanely proud of her and just want to celebrate every part of her journey. she pours her heart into her work and deserves all the spotlight she gets, if not more.
i mean, i’m only 14—i was 12 for most of 2022. i just hate joining in the middle of something, feeling like i missed out on so much. i’d see old tumblr and instagram posts from people who were there for PD before it even dropped, celebrating streaming milestones, and i’d scroll through reddit threads filled with lore and theories.
i don’t normally feel this way about artists. i actually haven’t ever felt this way before. she’s the first artist i genuinely wish i’d been there for from the start. the fact that i wasn’t makes me feel a little upset, almost unworthy of listening now, like i missed being part of something truly special.
anyways… hayden’s work is so rich and beautifully crafted, not just with PD but across all her albums, EPs, and singles. every piece is incredibly thought out. she has such an extraordinary mind and such a beautiful way with words, and there isn’t a single song by her that i don’t love with everything in me. i absolutely cannot wait to see what she does with perverts.
