Enough Caffeine to Kill an Elephant
Listen. It was an accident. He didn't mean to! It just kinda happened.
So maybe he brought a drink with enough caffeine in it to kill an elephant within a few minutes, and maybe he forgot to put the sleeve on his cup so he could tell it apart from the others, but it's not his fault! He didn't think anyone else was going to have the exact same Yeti cup as him! It's not like he'd seen any of the others carry one before. Besides, he worked with superheros. They should be smart enough to check before drinking someone else's drink.
Danny had been summoned by the Justice League Dark a few years back in order to help with a world ending crisis and he just didn't leave. It's not like he could go anywhere anyway. His ghost half hadn't grown past fourteen and his human half had stopped visibly aging at eighteen. He'd had to leave town as Danny Fenton, but he'd stayed in Amity Park as Danny Phantom. When his parents died of old age, thank god, he'd closed down the portal, stuck around for a few more years, before traveling the world as Danny Fenton.
Anyway, he'd taken up residence in the House of Mysteries after the JLD had summoned him. Constantine, at first, had been wary, but he and the rest of the JLD had grown to accept him. He was an honorary member of the team.
At some point, just after Robin had become Red Robin, Danny had been introduced to the Justice League. He liked those guys, too, and worked with them sometimes. Though, he usually only went to bug them.
Red Robin had been very interested in the fact that his was fourteen and working with grown heros, like he was one to talk, but Danny hadn't explained anything other than saying that he had died and come back. The following conversation was an interesting one that lead to Danny knowing that Nightwing was the Batman he'd met and that Batman was lost somewhere. He'd confirmed that the man was not dead, but he hadn't offered to help look for him. He probably should have, in retrospect.
Back on topic! Everyone in the JLD knew not to touch Danny's drink. They'd all seen him make it before and had been horrified on varying degrees. It's not like it could kill him. He's already half dead! So long as he only drank this specific brew as Phantom, he'd be fine.
The Justice League, apparently, didn't get the memo. He blames Constantine because Zatanna and Raven can do no wrong. No, John, he's not biased.
The point is, Red Robin just had a sip of Danny's drink. The horror he now felt was akin to the fear he held when he'd told his parents he was Phantom. (An interaction that had gone very well, thank you very much.)
Danny knew the exact moment that the vigilante realized he grabbed the wrong drink. His eyes widened to an astonishing degree, and, if he'd been able to seen his eyes behind the mask, Danny knew that the man's pupils would've completely overtaken the irises. His hands started shaking, too. Oh, no. The man's already addicted to hellish amounts of coffee. This is only going to make it worse!
Quickly, and without drawing any attention, thank the Ancients, Danny rushed over. "You, um, you okay, man?" Obviously not, but he tends to talk when he's anxious and he was certainly anxious right now. He could've possibly just killed a man via poison!
"What the fuck is in this coffee?" Red Robin asked, going to take another sip.
Danny pulled the Yeti from his hand and gave him the proper one. "Enough caffeine to kill an elephant."
"Obviously not, seeing as I'm still alive."
"Yeah, I can't tell if that's a good thing or not."
"Excuse me?"
"I-I mean-! I didn't-! You know what I mean." Caffeine is poisonous in excess, and his drink was way beyond excess, but it's the only thing that works for him as a ghost! Superpowered metabolism and all that.
"Do I?" The laugh in his voice answered for him. He took a sip from his drink and frowned at it. "I don't think any coffee will ever be enough again."
"And that's my cue to get my drink very far away from you." Danny turned, fully intent on moving to the other side of the room. Besides, the meeting was going to start as soon as the Flash and Kid Flash arrived, which would be soon. Something about one of their Rouges getting out?
"What?" Red Robin asked, "Why?" If he was a little desperate to get another sip of that coffee, he'd rather not acknowledge it.
"Because you don't need anymore lethal coffee," he muttered, "The sip you took will already keep you awake for three days at least, and it probably jump started an addiction. Best to stop it now. Besides, I need to go have my crisis on how the hell you're still alive after even a sip of this stuff."
"Again, rude." The bird themed vigilante crossed his arms as best he could while holding his cup. "If it's so dangerous, why do you drink it?"
Danny took a deliberate sip as he locked eyes with the technically younger man. "I'm dead. I don't need to worry about my heart stopping or having a seizure."
"Excuses."
"No, it's not 'excuses'. I'm saving your life."
"You're a kid. If I can't have that coffee, then you shouldn't be having it."
"First, I'm older than you. Second, I already told you: I'm dead. This isn't going to hurt me. Third, you can't tell me what to do."
"There's no way you're older than me. You're like, ten."
"I'm thirty-eight!" He balked, "I only look fourteen because I died when I was fourteen. We've been over this."
Neither noticed the entire Justice League looking at them. The two they were waiting on had arrived a few minutes ago and everyone was ready to start the meeting, but they'd been distracted by the two's conversation. Was that true? Had Phantom really died so young? They'd all been made aware he was not living, but they didn't think he'd died so young! Though, that was probably the denial speaking.
The Justice League Dark had been fully aware of this and didn't really bat an eye. Though, someone should probably get this meeting started. A potentially world ending threat was the topic, and that was a pretty important thing to discuss.
Captain Marvel was the first to pull himself together, though that was only after Atlas and Zeus had mentally slapped him out of his stupur. "As, ah, riveting as this conversation is," he stepped between the two boys- er, boy and man? "we really need to start this meeting."
Batman did not clear his throat because he'd not lost his voice in the first place. "He's right. Everyone take your seats."

This month's short stories are gonna be AITA themed (you know, like the sub reddit) but SUPERNATURAL I am dying laughing at this idea.
"AITA for divorcing my spouse of 300 years because of their weird obsession with high schoolers?"
"AITA for telling my thrall she's not special when she objected to me turning her sister?"
"WIBTA for not rejoining my adventurer party because they made fun of my staff? [EDIT: My magic staff, sickos]"

ok, imagine you have a nightmare about caleb exactly two months before his death. he happens to be staying with you, a day off just to say hi that turned into a sleepover. you find him at 3am, crawl into his bed, his lap, he's trying to soothe you, asking what happened but you're sobbing, playing a shaking hand over his chest just to feel his heart beating. he manages to calm you down, holding you close, letting you cry it out until he thought you were sleeping/ end part 1

ANON. EATING THIS UP. EATING THIS UP!!!!! nooo pls donât ever apologize for that. I was so delighted to see the Caleb spam. Theyâre always welcome in my inbox :)))) Here. I wrote a little something, because I see Caleb and Iâm weakened instantly đ„č And if you havenât already, pls check out my beloved @rose-tinted-kalopsiaâs fic, baby, kiss it better. She wrote about Caleb comforting you after your nightmare. Literally in my top 5 fave LADS fics overall đđđđđ
but stay with me
It was the most horrible sound you had ever heard. So godawful, it woke you up from that nightmare.
Still shaken, your fragile heart was racing, pumping erratically against your chest, your own breathing was just as irregular. The heavy panting was mixed with the choked back sobs, your emotions in complete turmoil as you tried to convinced yourself that everything you had just witnessed was not real. It was just a nightmare.
It took you a few extra minutes before it finally clicked in your head that your face was wet with tears. You wiped at your eyes furiously with the side of your arm, but it seemed to have only encouraged more tears to fall, your chest tightening with each painful breath taken.
It was a nightmare. Just a nightmare.
You repeated the mantra, a vain, pitiful attempt to calm yourself.
It was not real. It was just a nightmare.
Except, it wasnât the boogeyman that scared you. It wasnât the social anxiety of standing before a large crowd giving a speech while naked. It wasnât even something like your dolls coming to life to murder you.
Those were all irrational figments of your imagination, concepts so exaggerated they had no place in reality.
But this.
It could very well happen. The world was scary enough to allow this to happen.
You closed your eyes.
You watched him turned his back on you, his hand on the door handle. He opened the door, entering without you, the door closing in your face. Just as you reached for the very same handle he had touched, there was an explosion that knocked you back, leaving you crumbled on the floor staring in confused abject horror as your grandmotherâs house went up in flames, destroyed within a blink of an eye for seemingly no goddamn reason.
In just a few seconds, he was ripped out of your life.
In just a few seconds, he was stolen from you.
In just a few seconds, the boy who had promised to always be by your side was gone.
CalebâŠCalebâŠ!
âCaleb!â you screamed out his name, no longer sure whether you were still within that nightmare or if you were awake, suffering from the lingering horrors you had witnessed, the cruel image now ingrained deeply in your mind like a stubborn weed you couldnât kill, its roots strong and hardy going far deeper into the soil than you could ever reach.
Get out of your head, you scolded yourself firmly. Caleb is alive. Heâs asleep in the living room.
It was such a nice day. Caleb had arrived in Linkon for a surprise visit from Skyhaven, managing to find time to slip away from the Deepspace Aviation Administration to see his favorite person in the world and celebrate her recent achievements at the Hunters Association. You both spent the day catching up, reminiscing as you both bumbled your way throughout the city, going from store to store, taking countless pictures to preserve the memory of the day, and laughed until your sides hurt and your cheeks sore from all of the smiles exchanged.
When you came home, Caleb made all of his signature dishes, spoiling you even when he was a guest in your home. It was just a habit he couldnât break, one that he also showed no particular interest in rectifying. Like a summer breeze, Caleb brought warmth into your home, into your life. When Caleb was here, the world seemed just a bit gentler, a little safer, and you found your guard lowering, letting yourself drown in his familiar warmth.
Caleb was the very feeling of home, and he would always be home to you, encompassing all of the warm memories borne from the innocent years of growing up together.
You tried to steady your breathing once more. There was a hollowness in your eyes, your mind settling but still restless.
You wondered how such a perfect day gave way to the most horrific dream of your life.
Like a zombie, you left your bed, moving sluggishly down the halls to the living room with no clear thought in your head. You approached the couch, peering down at the figure asleep, curled up on that small sofa that could barely contain his large stature.
You stood next to the couch, staring down, breathing a little shaky again now that you are looking at him. He was there, asleep, where he should be.
You could see him clearly with your own eyes, but there was still a seed of doubt planted in your mind, a nagging voice trying to manipulate you, spreading lies in your head that he was just a figment of your imagination, that you were just in another layer of a dream.
You reached out, the pads of your fingers skimmed over his cheek, barely making contact, but perhaps there was still just enough of an electrifying touch to rouse Caleb from his deep slumber.
He stirred.
You quickly pulled your hand back, your breathing worsening. Before you could turn and retreat, Caleb called out to you in the darkness, his voice raspier than normal, still caught somewhere between dreaming and consciousness.
âPipsqueak? Whatâs the mattââ
The words died at his lips, his perfect vision noticing instantly even in the darkness your puffy, red eyes. He immediately shoved the cover to the side, rushing to his feet as he gripped your arms, bent down to your height to thoroughly examine you.
âWhatâs wrong? What happened? Are you hurt somewhere? Do you feel unwell?â
You sniffled, unable to answer the barrage of questions being hurled at you. When you try to speak, the fragments of your nightmare resurfaced, forming that awful image in your mind again. Unable to say anything, you threw your arms around his waist, the suddenness surprised Caleb into losing his balance and you both fell back onto the couch with you on top of him. Instinctively, Calebâs arms wrapped around you, the familiar warmth of him was already easing your anxiety, but it still didnât feel like it was enough. You wanted more, needed more.
Needed him. Just so.
Your face pressed into his chest, his heart beating softly and you started to breathe easier again. His body heat spread to you, his gentle voice calling out once more.
âWhatâs wrong?â His fingers were under your chin, slowly lifting your head up so your eyes could meet. He sighed, disheartened, upon seeing just how red and swollen your eyes were. âWhat could have made the fearless Miss Hunter here so terrified that she cried until her eyes were so red and puffy?â
You recognized the faint teasing lilt in his voice, the same one he had used since childhood as a way to console you, to brighten your mood, and coax out whatever secrets you were keeping from him. It always worked, and you would confess to him about your fears, reveal the bullies who were tormenting you, or any worries that filled your little head, and Caleb would always come to the rescue and make the world right again.
This time, though, you did not want to tell him.
You quietly lowered your eyes, missing the instant hurt on Calebâs face when you refused to speak to him.
An awkward silence started to creep into the room, but neither one of you spoke. You continued to withhold this nightmare from him, afraid that if you voice it out loud, something would get set in motion and what was once just a horrific dream would become an irreversible reality.
Caleb himself felt a little lost and suddenly helpless, a role he was unfamiliar with. He was always your protector, your confidant, and your companion, so to see you so terrified to the point that you couldnât even speak to him made him question his own worth. He closed his eyes briefly, and exhaled, deciding that this silence had gone on long enough.
Easily, he scooped you into his arms, ignoring your surprised cries as he stood up and carried you back to your bed.
âCa-Caleb?â
âItâs late,â he murmured, not looking down at you, âLetâs get you back into bed.â
You huffed and lightly beat at his chest with one small fist. âCaleb, Iâm not a kid anymore,â you said, muttering softly, âYou shouldnât speak to me like that.â
You were lowered down into the soft mattress, and before Caleb could straighten, you grabbed at the front of his shirt, yanking him down until he fell on top of you in surprise.
âPipsqââ
Your lips pressed to his, and Caleb was stunned into silence, his eyes widened in surprise. A million thoughts seemed to race through Calebâs mind, and not one of them made sense or even tried to rationalize what was happening in this instance.
Your lips felt so warm and soft against his, and perhaps in a moment of weakness, he closed his eyes, returning the kiss, deepening it further, realizing that this was everything he had wanted for years. The line he had always wished to cross but hesitated was now gone. You were the first to cross to him, so how could he just refuse this moment? Refuse you?
Neither of you know how much time had passed, breaking apart only when you needed to breathe. Calebâs hands were pressed into the mattress on either side of your head, his eyes locked with yours, both your cheeks flushed and your breathing labored.
âCalebâŠyouâre leaving soonâŠâ
He looked confused, unsure of what was going through your head. You were behaving so abnormally tonight, so emotional and distressed, he was starting to go mad with worry, wanting to do anything to chase away the anxiety that was grappling you.
âNot for another three days,â he answered as calmly as he could, âIâm all yours until then, pipsqueak.â
âWill you be mine tonight?â
He stilled, his breathing stopping the moment he heard those words, wondering if maybe his hearing might have deceived him. It was a few seconds before he managed to find his voice, though as he spoke, it wasnât even registering in his head that he was speaking to you, âWhatâŠdid you say, pipsqueak?â
You looked up, blinking away the tears that still remained. You stared into his violet eyes, wishing to look into them forever. âI want you, CalebâŠpleaseâŠâ
âYouâre not thinking clearly,â he said, his voice wavering enough that he wondered who he was trying to convince: youâŠor him?
You shook your head vehemently. âNoâŠI am. I am, I am, I am, I amâŠ!â
Your hands cupped his face, your voice steadied and assured. âThis is the most lucid Iâve ever been.â As you stared into his questioning eyes, your heart dropped suddenly. There was an acute shift in your expression, reflecting your sudden mood change, and to others, it was subtle enough that no one would notice, but with Caleb, he was always aware of everything about you. He saw the shift, that flicker of fear in your eyes before you had blinked them away. Quietly, you asked, afraid of his answer, afraid of whatever truth awaited you in the next few seconds, âOrâŠdo you not want me?â
Calebâs eyes widened in shock, his heart stirring at hearing the anxiousness in your feeble voice. One large hand slipped under your head and you were pressed forward closer to him, his lips crashing against yours in a heated kiss, the depths of his feelings like a tidal wave sweeping away everything in its path.
âFuck no,â he groaned, the rasp in his voice more prevalent than normal. âIâŠIâve always wanted you. Iâll always want you.â
âReâŠreally?â
âReally.â
âReally, really?â
âReally, really.â
His breathing stuttered, his eyes flickering from your own, a mix of fear and yearning in your gaze, to your lips, trembling and waiting. He swallowed, his Adamâs apple bobbing, before he leaned down closer, the warmth of his breath caressed against your lips as he spoke, âAre you sure?â
âIâm sure,â you answered.
âOne last chancââ
You kissed him, swallowing that last word. He instantly submitted to you, his kisses ravenous as if a dam had just been broken, and now there was nothing holding back his own feelings. As you kissed him, gasping in between, your hands fumbled against his clothes, tugging at his t-shirt. He let you guide him, the shirt slipping off and revealing his toned torso.
You didnât have long to appreciate them before you realized his own hands were on the waistband of your shorts, giving an experimental tug down. He shifted his gaze to you, waiting, and you nodded. He smirked and made quick work of discarding your bottoms, his breathing growing heavier now that the only thing left were the light pink cotton panties you wore.
âCalebâŠâ your lips found his again, pulling him back to you. As you two kissed, his lips trailing all over, marking you up in ways you had never dreamed about before. You gasped, arching up into him when you felt his bulge brushing over your core, the thin fabric of his pajama bottoms not enough of a barrier between the two of you.
The way he was breathing so heavily, his pants making you more aroused than you could have ever realized. One large hand slipped under your shirt, easily covering your entire breast. You whined when that same callous hand circled your breast, his fingers finding your nipple to pinch and play with until it firmed under his touch. You fidgeted against him, whining softly at his teasing treatment.
âAre you always this sensitive?â he asked, gazing down in amusement at your flushed cheeks. He laughed softly when you lightly glared at him. His voice lowered, his mouth so close to your right ear that when he spoke, you could feel butterflies fluttering in your belly. âOr is itâŠonly for me?â
He kissed your neck soundly, the warmth of his lips still lingered even when he pulled back, his smoldering violet eyes gazing down at you with such desires, you quickly forgotten your frustration with him. His hands skimmed down your body, resting on your hips, his thumbs rubbing against the waistband of your panties. There was still some hesitancy left in him, as if he was afraid that once he crossed this line with you, things would never be like before.
You guided his fingers, letting more of the fabric slip lower and lower, his breathing the only sound heard in the stillness of your bedroom. Once he had slipped the garment off, it seemed like everything moved much faster, the restraints that held both of you back gone in that instance as you both succumbed to the once dormant desires within both of you.
âAhâŠCalebâŠ!â You gasped as he grabbed your thighs, spreading you more. His hardened member pressed against your slick folds, the tip slipping in and you moaned as you took him in slowly. Your thoughts raced as you realized that not only was this happening, but Caleb was much bigger than you could have anticipated. Your belly tightened, body tensing as more of his large length filled you.
He kept you spread, his body leaning forward, the barely-contained groans filling your ears. âSo fucking tight,â he rasped, âFuck, you feel soâŠso goodâŠbetter than I couldâŠcould haveâŠimaginedâŠâ
Your chest heaved, the feverish expression you wore betrayed your feelings, showing him that his words barely registered in your head as all you could do was focus on the feel of him filling you so gloriously. He hummed happily as he leaned down and kissed your lips, giving one final thrust to fill you, your startled gasp swallowed by him as he continued to ravage your lips as he let you get used to the feel of him buried deep inside you.
âAhâŠCaâŠCalebâŠâ you whimpered his name in between kisses, your hips rolling against his.
Understanding your need, Caleb slowly pulled out before he thrusted back in, your moans more heavenly than he could have ever thought, and now that he had a taste of the once forbidden fruit, he knew he could never give you up even if he wanted to. Once he was sure you were enjoying yourself, he found a pace that was pleasurable for the both of you, letting go of all the previous hesitancy and yielding completely to this moment of passion.
With every movement, every burning touch, you moaned his name, begging and pleading with him for more, to take you harder, make you his completely. You had said his name so many times before, in so many different tones and with so many moods accompanying them, but he had never heard his name uttered in such a sweet, lascivious way as this with that pretty voice of yours spilling such perverted words. He could get addicted to this, wanting to greedily covet all of these sweet sounds for himself.
His length reached deeply inside you, hitting that sweet spot that had you arching into him, clenching around him. He groaned into your neck, his voice hoarse with desires. âWhatever you want,â he murmured, his voice so soft and lazy, it was almost like you were getting intoxicated by him, âI will give you.â
âCaâŠCalebâŠâ
âHmmâŠâ He kissed you again, long and slow, savoring your lips and this moment for as long as he could. âI will never stop spoiling you,â he whispered, nipping your bottom lip. His forehead pressed to yours, and another roll of his hips had you arching into him, arms wrapped around his neck as you buried your face into his shoulder, crying softly. He gripped your legs on either side of him, pulling you closer to him as he shushed you gently. âYouâre so close, baby,â he continued in that same leisure tone, his own groans of pleasure mixed in between his words, âAre you going to cum for me soon?â
âYeâŠyesâŠâ
âYes what?â He was teasing you again, wanting to rile you up. He kissed along your neck once more, his sinfully sweet voice coaxing you closer to the edge. âTell me. Say it with that pretty voice of yours.â
âCaleâŠCalebâŠâ
He hummed again, waiting. He pressed a kiss along your shoulder, his movements quickening to meet your needs.
âOh god, Caleb!â You gripped him tighter, feeling every deep, hard thrust. You whimpered as he gripped your chin, keep your face close to his.
âEyes on me,â he commanded, a lecherous smirk on his handsome face. âI want to see what you look like cumming on my cock.â
Oh, fuck.
At those perverted words, the long building climax came crashing, your body pulsing with pleasure as you cried out his name with such ecstasy. The sight of you beneath him, shaking in pleasure, lost in a blissful state of euphoria stole his breath away as he chased after his own climax, driving into you over and over again with reckless abandon.
You whimpered, his forearms suddenly resting on either side of you, keeping you completely trapped beneath him as he continued to penetrate you so deeply with quickened movements. His intense kisses assaulted your lips before his hips stuttered and suddenly, he was emptying into you, filling you with ropes of his seed.
âF-fuckâŠâ he panted, his weight heavy on you. For what seemed like several minutes, you both stayed like this, feeling the aftershocks of your climaxes still coursing through your spent bodies. You could feel Calebâs lazy kisses trailing along your neck, his lips finding your temple. He spoke first, voice soft and gentle, âAre you alright?â
You nodded tiredly, and he smiled.
He pulled out of you, breathing shuddering as his eyes took in the erotic sight of his cum dripping lewdly from your cunt. He didnât say anything, but this was having more of an arousing effect on him than he could have realized. He swallowed and quickly looked up, meeting your satiated gaze. His expression softened, pleased to see you were in a calmer state now compared to earlier.
He settled down in bed, pulling you into his embrace. You arm draped over his chest as you both basked in the afterglow. The silence that followed was more comfortable this time as both your breathing slowed in time together.
Your eyes drifted close while Caleb ran his fingers through your hair, a troubled expression passed his features suddenly, almost as if he was unsure whether or not he should ruin this mood with the question lingering in his mind.
He didnât want things to just get swept away, to be forgotten just like that, especially not when he knew you were in such pain before, and he doubted you were completely fine now. Whether this was a good decision or not, Caleb needed to at least try and break through this new barrier you had put up tonight. So, he asked: âDo you want to tell me about your nightmare?â
You stayed completely still in his arms, not moving or reacting in any way. You could sense Calebâs intense stare, but he was patient as he waited for you to answer his sudden question.
You could still hear the explosion, the crackling of flames left in its wake. The heat was so unbearable, scorching like the fires of Hell itself.
You burrowed into Calebâs embrace, shaking your head silently as you held him just a bit tighter, the squeeze a gentle reminder that he was still here, still in your arms.
He was safe.
He was safe in your arms.
And he was warm and real and here and yours.
âAlright,â Caleb whispered, his lips pressed to the top of your head. âIâll be here if you ever want to tell me.â
Your voice sounded so small and helpless, as if you were a child again chasing after him. âYouâll be here?â
He smiled. âEven if I am away, I will always find my way home to you,â he said, his resolve strong. âFrom Skyhaven or wherever else, I will always return to you no matter the distance.â
âPromise?â
âPromise,â he answered, not missing a beat. Still seeing the worried creases on your face, Caleb rubbed your cheek affectionately, asking with a tinge of teasing in his voice, âHave I ever broken a promise to you?â
And you smiled for the first time that night, because no, he never had.
And he never will.

âDo you want a coffee?â Theo asked.
âI donât know, am I alive and breathing?â I replied.
âItâs pretty late. Decaf?â He asked.

Writing Notes: Caffeine
Caffeine - A mild alkaloid stimulant made by some plants.
Found in coffee beans, tea leaves, and cocoa beans; added to soft drinks, energy drinks, and energy bars; and sold in capsules and tablets as a dietary supplement.
A mild stimulant. It is used to temporarily relieve fatigue and increase mental alertness. Caffeine is added to some antihistamine drugs to help counteract the sleepiness they may cause. It is also added to over-the-counter headache remedies (e.g., Excedrin) and migraine headache drugs to enhance their painkilling effects. Under medical supervision, citrated caffeine (a prescription drug) is used to treat breathing problems in premature infants.
From the Italian word cafée, meaning "coffee", is naturally made by about 60 plants. The most familiar of these are coffee leaves and beans, tea leaves, kola nuts, yerba mate, guarana berries, and cacao (the source of chocolate). In plants, caffeine is a pesticide. Insects eating plants that contain caffeine become disabled or die.
It has no nutritional value. But there seem to be some benefits to regular caffeine consumption, despite conflicting research.
Effects on the Body
Increases heart rate
Temporarily increases blood pressure
Relaxes smooth muscle cells in the airways
Releases fatty acids and glycerol in the body for energy use
Easily crosses the blood-brain barrier and changes the level of neurotransmitters in the brain
Passes into breast milk
Caffeine is absorbed in the stomach.
Its effects are noticeable in about 15 minutes and usually last several hours.
However, there is a huge variation among people both in their sensitivity to caffeine and in how long it stays in their bodies.
Although the average time it takes half a dose of caffeine to be eliminated from the body is 3-4 hours, this time may extend to 6 hours in women taking oral contraceptives; much longer in pregnant women and in people with liver damage.
Many well-designed, well-documented studies show that caffeine makes people more alert, improves short-term memory, enhances the ability to concentrate, increases the individualâs capacity for physical work, and speeds up reaction time.
In habitual caffeine drinkers, caffeine achieves this by preventing the detrimental effects of withdrawal.
It does not boost functioning to above normal levels.
All of these effects are temporary.
Caffeine does not replace the need for rest or sleep.
Caffeine Withdrawal
Discontinuing caffeine among regular users can cause withdrawal symptoms. These can include:
Headaches (very common)
Irritability
Nausea
Fatigue
Sleepiness
Inability to concentrate
Mild depression
Caffeine withdrawal symptoms begin 12â24 hours after caffeine is stopped.
Withdrawal symptoms peak at around 48 hours, and can last up to 5 days.
Tapering caffeine use, for example cutting down on caffeine by the equivalent of half a cup of coffee (about 50 mg) a day, minimizes or eliminates withdrawal symptoms.
Caffeinism
People who consume more than 500 mg of caffeine a dayâequivalent to about five cups of coffeeâmay develop a condition called caffeinism, though the threshold varies among individuals.
Produces unpleasant sensations, some of which are similar to withdrawal symptoms. Symptoms of Caffeine Overuse include:
Restlessness
Irritability
Nervousness
Anxiety
Muscle twitching
Headaches
Inability to fall asleep
A racing heart
Related Disorders
Severe overuse of caffeine can cause a number of related disorders, including:
Caffeine Intoxicationâusually the result of taking caffeine pills (e.g., NoDoz), this condition causes mental changes, rambling thoughts and speech, irregular heartbeat, and other symptoms associated with overuse. In severe cases death can result from ventricular fibrillation (unsynchronized contractions of the ventricle of the heart).
Caffeine-Induced Anxiety Disorderâsevere anxiety that interferes with daily social interactions and occurs after caffeine intoxication or heavy long-term use of caffeine.
Caffeine-Induced Sleep Disorderâan inability to sleep that is so great it requires medical/psychiatric attention and occurs after prolonged caffeine consumption.
Non-Specific Caffeine-Induced Disorderâdisorders not listed that are attributable to either acute or long-term caffeine consumption.

Effects of Caffeine
This prompt was given by CodyBee on aO3
Arnold had served on crews with humans in the past, but he had never before been quite so perplexed by one as he was with Ruby. She was always moving. Whether she was bouncing her leg while she sat, or swaying slightly as she stood, it was like she was nearly incapable of staying still. The first time they were scheduled at a post together after he joined the team, he had a moment of fear that she was drunk and going to fall over! She has since brought small toys to fidget in her hands, which did help a considerable bit. At first, Arnold worried that bringing the small gadgets would lessen the overall âintimidation factorâ they and their crew strove for on duty, but she would discreetly slip it into a pocket whenever facing the public. Ruby was also quick to notice and point out insanely small details. Being on a security detail team, one might think that quality would come in handy. And of course, it did, but sometimes the things she would notice were⊠odd. For example, part of the crew (Arnold and Ruby included) were hired out to serve as security for some rich erenti politician who fancied themselves as this big âoutdoorsy,â âin-touch-with-all-natureâ type. Being so rich, and especially being such a prominent proponent in some particularly high-profile legistlation that was being hotly debated at the time, the campaign team decided extra security was a must during the photo shoot of the politician traipsing through the âwildernessâ on Earth. It was literally just a ten-mentik drive outside a medium-sized human town, but there were lots of trees, bushes, and tall grass so it looked the part. At some point, while Arnold and the rest of the team patrolled the area, Ruby froze mid-step and leaned in to inspect a nearby bush. Everyone else stopped, thinking maybe Ruby had noticed some security risk. No. It was a tiny red bug with black spots. It wasnât even a poisonous or otherwise dangerous bug. Lerk, one of the mahbens on the team could barely even see it against the greenery until Ruby let it walk onto her fingers. It was so small, and surrounded by so many other things vying for attention, yet she spotted it immediately as she was patrolling!
That wasnât the only thing Arnold found odd about Ruby. She was often rather forgetful. It wasnât like she forgot about meetings or how to do her assigned tasks, nothing super important. Instead, she would forget what she was talking about in the middle of a sentence. And donât even get him started on how many times heâd seen Ruby walk into a room, stop, and look around with a confused look on her face. When asked, sheâd say that she forgot what she came in for and then would leave to âretrace her steps to remember.â There was one day during training someone pointed out a huge dark bruise on Rubyâs arm. She was in the middle of a rowing exercise and as she extended her arm, her sleeve pulled up enough for it to be seen. Ruby claimed it was the first time sheâd even noticed it. That seemed absolutely preposterous! It was on her upper arm, just under the shoulder and it was dark. Super dark. Arnold knew enough about human health to know that the bruise was already pretty old at that point, it was large and purple, with a bit of green around the edges. Ruby claimed she not only hadn't seen it before that moment but also that she had no idea where such a bruise would have come from! Humans were weird. And Arnold just figured that Ruby was an especially weird one.
Arnold shut the drawer heâd spent the last 5 mentiks searching through. Heâd misplaced his lucky pin. It wasnât in its normal spot because heâd given it a shine before lunch. He remembered setting it down for just a moment. Somewhere where it wouldnât be bothered. Somewhere where he thought heâd easily remember. Now he couldnât remember where that âsomewhereâ was and he was scheduled for a mission soon. Arnold shook his head and walked along, scanning all countertops, tables, shelves, etc. as he went. Nothing. Maybe heâd check the rec room. As he entered, he immediately noticed it was already occupied by a few of his teammates. âYou ready for tonight, Arnold?â Human Gustavo called out from the lounge in the corner. Arnold nodded. âJust about. I canât find my lucky pin though. Have you seen it?â He tapped on his lapel where he usually wore it. Human Gustavo and mahben Lerk shook their heads but got up and began looking around. âIs it yellow and white?â another voice piped up. Arnold looked over to the opposite side of the rec room. It was human Ruby. She was standing in the small kitchenette area in her on-duty uniform, holding a bottle with a dark red label that sheâd clearly been drinking from. Heâd seen that drink before. Human Gustavo had ordered a large case of them last megacycle and ïżœïżœstashedâ them away. The beverage contained large amounts of a dangerous chemical commonly referred to as âcaffeine,â and was thusly banned. It wasnât dangerous to humans, however, so they often smuggled it. Half the time they werenât even discrete about it. Instead of exploding their hearts or driving them into paranoid anxiety attacks, it just gave them more energy and made them more alert, so management never said or did anything. The only unspoken rule was that the drinks were not shared among the rest of the team. Ruby, being human, should be fine to drink the beverage, butâŠ
Ruby looked at him staring at her. âWhat? Gus said I could have one." âThat has caffeine in it!â Arnold choked. âYou already have so much energy! Thatâs got to be the last thing you need right now!â He knew they shared a schedule tonight. A super hyped-up human would not be conducive to their mission. Ruby looked a bit confused for a moment. âItâs fine, Arnie. Iâll be fine! This,â she held up the bottle in her hand, âhelps me focus. I donât drink it all that often, but my med delivery is a bit late, so a bit of caffeine kind of helps.â Even Human Gustavo could read the disbelief on Arnoldâs face as he walked toward one of the lower storage closets and retrieved another, identical bottle from one of his âstashes.â âItâs true,â Gustavo opened the bottle which gave a short hiss. âMost people get a lot of energy, but caffeine doesnât affect her the same way.â He lifted the bottle to his lips and took a big gulp, followed by a dramatic, âAhhh! What a shame. So sad.â Ruby rolled her eyes and took a small drink from her bottle. âItâs not a bad thing. Or a good thing. It just is what it is. Itâs how my cute little ADHD brain works.â
The two humans started laughing and teasing. Mahben Lerk shook his head as he continued to try looking around for the almost-forgotten lucky pin. âOh!â Ruby started. âI nearly forgot! I saw a yellow and white pin somewhere recently! Hold on, let me think⊠it was on a counter with a sink. I remember there was a large bright light because it made the pin very shiny... it was catching a lot of light... and I liked the color. Is that the one youâre looking for?â Everyone looked to Arnold. That did sound like his lucky pin. By a sink? âAh, I remember now.â He turned and went down the hall to check the washroom. Sure enough, there was his pin. He must have set it down after shining it when he was trying to get some excess polish off his hands. He grabbed it and walked back into the rec room.
âWas it there?â âYou found it?â Arnold held up his lucky pin to confirm it had been found and then looked to Ruby. âYou noticed this little pin even though it wasnât yours and you didnât know I was looking for it?â He didn't mention how she only remembered small details where sheâd seen it. It was enough for him to find it and he was indebted to her after all. âYeah, I do that all the time,â Ruby shrugged. âIt drives me nuts when I only remember random details about things Iâm looking for sometimes, but I guess some clues are better than none. âYes, that's true."He paused. Something she'd said earlier intrigued him but he didn't want to be rude. "And that is a common occurrence? With the A-D- uh⊠the thing you said about your brain?â âADHD, and yeah, kind of common, at least for me." She folded her arms and gave an exasperated sigh. "Especially when I havenât been able to take my medications for it. Like, I still remember things, but it feels harder, muddier, if that makes sense?â Arnold nodded. He wasnât sure what mud had to do with memory, but he thought he understood the idea of what she was explaining. âAnd thatâŠthe ADHD... thatâs why the caffeine affects you differently than the other humans?â It was mind-boggling to him that the same chemicals and medications could have such wildly different results in humans. How did they know how anything would work for anyone? âYeah,â Ruby nodded casually, âInstead of getting an energy buzz, I get a boost of dopamine, which my brain naturally doesnât produce enough of on its own. Caffeine helps calm me down a bit and focus more. But,â she paused, âit doesnât always work the same way for everyone. Brains are complicated. Like, it took a while for my doctor and I to find the right dosage of my meds, but we figured it out eventually. It's sometimes a bit of trial and error for people.â The conversation then turned to medications, to discussing reasons the shipment containing Rubyâs meds must have been delayed to comparing who had ever waited the longest for a shipment while off-world, to a back-and-forth mixture of complaining and gushing about how long or how quickly news and media were able to be transmitted throughout the star systems.
Arnold didnât join in. His mind was elsewhere as he secured his lucky pin to its normal spot on his lapel. âTrial and error,â âit doesnât always work,â âfiguring it out eventually?â By the stars! Human doctors must have their hands full trying to balance all the ways different things affect different humans! What could kill one human could probably save another. How did they figure all that out and keep everything straight? It was madness! An alert sounded from Arnoldâs comm timer. It was time to get ready for the mission. Ruby heard it too and began disengaging from her conversation with Gustavo and Lerk. The two of them bid their teammates farewell as Ruby followed Arnold out of the rec room. They walked quietly for a while towards the briefing room where theyâd go over last-minute notes and pick up any needed gear. Even though Ruby could have easily outpaced him with her longer legs, she stayed by his side. âHey, before I forget to ask,â Ruby smiled, âdid you have anything fun planned for tomorrow?â âTomorrow?â Arnold frowned in confusion. âWell, we have our debriefing once we get back. I donât have anything planned after that. Why? Is there another mission? They usually avoid having us doing back-to-back jobs.â âOh. No, itâs not another mission. I just thought you might have something fun planned since tomorrow is your one solar-cycle anniversary of joining our team.â Arnold stopped. Was it? Had it already been a whole galactic-standard year? Heâd been on several crews and teams so far in his career, but heâd never done anything special for any anniversaries. Heâd hardly paid them much mind, let alone have someone else remember them! Ruby stopped as well. âI actually got you a gift. Itâs nothing big or anything, but itâs something I thought youâd like. Itâs just⊠it might be a bit late. Itâs on the same shipment as my meds. Hopefully. I would have just waited to tell you about it when I gave it to you, but I just canât wait anymore!âShe watched his face for a reaction before smiling mischievously, âDonât ask me what it is though, I wonât tell âtill I give it to you. Iâll at least keep that much a secret.â Arnold wasnât sure what to say. He stumbled out a âThan- thank you. You- you really didnât have to get me anything. I was, uh, I was really not expecting anyone to remember. Itâs not as if itâs some big milestone or anything.â âOh I know,â Rubyâs smile got bigger. âBut I wanted to! Humans usually celebrate birthdays, but when you have to start considering births, hatchings, emerging, constructions, and on and on, things get a bit complicated. So I decided to celebrate the anniversaries of when everyone joined the team!â
At that moment, a second alert sounded from Arnoldâs comm timer. He always set two just in case he didnât hear the first one. Ruby started walking toward the briefing room again. âWell, let me know if you do plan something tomorrow. Weâd better get going though or weâll be late for being early!â Arnold stared after her. She remembered his anniversary of joining the team? Not only that but had she actually memorized when everyone joined? She often forgot what time events were scheduled throughout the solar rotation. She sometimes forgot where she put her favorite pair of sunglasses until someone pointed out that they were resting on top of her head. Yet she remembered something so small as when he joined the team. He shook his head and started walking again. He didnât want to miss being early. Humans, as individuals and as a whole, were so weird. Heâd met so many, on so many different crews, but he had never before been quite so perplexed by one as he was with Ruby. Maybe he should plan something for tomorrow.

Ghost of fries and hero of cookies part 6
All work words count: 14 643
Words in this part: 2 686
Summary of whole work: Duke wasn't expecting to wake up from his quick rooftop nap to some meta kid with fries. He also wasn't expecting kid to stay
Or
Danny asked Dani to stay safe while she was in Gotham. Where would she be safer than under the wing of local hero? And he looked like he needed bad day combo anyway
This part summary: Batman wants an explanation. His kids however, wouldn't be themselves if they did add some chaos
Beta read by @audhumla-sailor though English is second language for both of us, so proceed with this in mind. I also know all of the charaters through fics alone, so probably ooc. Stay catious if it's something you don't like
First part, Previous part
âSignal.â
Duke bit back a sigh as his last hope to leave Cave undiscovered disappeared. He shot Steph message of:
Having The Talk. Come as moral support
and turned around to face Bruce.
âYes?â
B grunted in disapproving and âSignal reportâ way but Duke decided to buy some time and answer only questions that were actually asked. He slowly sat at the briefing table and looked at the man expectantly.
Lift chimed and moments later Tim and Cass went to Batcomputer and training mats respectively. Duke was, like, 80% sure they were there to eavesdrop. He knew them well enough. He knew them well enough.
âThe girlâ
âIzzy?â Was Duke annoying on purpose? Yes. He really didnât want to have this talk. Like, at all. Psychological warfare it was âI mean, I know she is civilian and you donât approve but at least she isnât doing anything illegal, right? Like, you know, robbing museums or killing people?â
Bruce looked repulsed and Tim snorted.
âLow blow Narrows, low blowâ Jason announced through speakers. He was slightly winded as if he just finished a fight âGood job kidâ
âSo youâre listening too, greatâ Duke muttered under his breath before louder he added âIs everyone who wants in on a show, here already?â
âGive me a sec- here Dick youâre going live nowâ
âThanks Babs, youâre the bestâ
âI know. Donuts, you know which oneâ
âOf course. Glad weâre finally going to talk about Dukeâs kidâ
âShut up, she is not my kid!â
âSteph ETA 2 minutesâ Cass interrupted.
At least Damian didnât show up- as if summoned by this thought Damian stomped down the stares, Alfred the Cat curled in his arms. Maybe others had a point, calling him Demon kid and stuff.
âWhat is an emergency?â he demanded and Duke decided to take what little relief he could from the fact that Bruce seemed equally defeated by sheer number of people around for this talk.Â
âIt seems like⊠oh, literally everyone lost an adoption betâ Babs explained. Huh, so Steph didnât change her stance.
Damian looked genuinely terrified as he muttered âNoâ eyes darting between everyone present in silent calculation.
âOh, shut upâ Duke whined knowing all too well his stalling had to come to the end. Maybe it was wishful thinking but he almost heard roar of engine of Stephâs motorcycle. Her presence would be double edged sword but she would help him advocate for Dani and that was more important.
âThomas, what have you done?!â if it was anyone other than Damian, Duke would call sound he made a whine. As it was, he preferred his entrails to stay inside and since the boy showed up, called by thought, the older boy preferred not to take risks.
âNothing, Babs is overreactingâ
âDonât deny it. She went about it kinda Tim Lite style but it workedâ
âI donât even know her surname, where she stays or really, anything about her life outside of our patrols, how do you expect me to go about adoption?!â
âB knew even less about me when he decided, yes this tire thief is my new son!â Jason chimed in and Duke knew he was grinning despite voice modulator.
âWhat from my origin story was lost to make Lite version?â
âIdentities weren't breached as far as we're aware. Just âcame one day and refuses to leaveâ part and some light stalking. She was smart about it, invisible, keeping out of sight and to the hot spots. Wouldn't find her if I didn't know she was thereâ
âShe could still just not tell, I mean I knew for years before telling anyoneâŠâ
âThere is no way. Believe me, she has no brain-mouth filter, I swearâ
âBut-â
âShe introduced herself by her first name,â Duke deadpanned âShe told me civilian names of heroes from her hometown, in context that didn't require me to do any actual research to clue me. I did anyway. I don't think she even realized she did it. If she knew our identities we would know alreadyâ
There was a moment of silence as everyone digested the thought of just how gigantic breach Dani accidentally caused.
âWell, it's as good of a proof as we can get for now,â Babs bristled.Â
âWho let her in on such secrets then?!â Damian sounded genuinely appalled and Duke wasn't too surprised.
Like on a cue, Steph stormed inside on her Spoiler in civies. Bruce looked about ready to get aneurysm. Duke was a bit glad that everyone was doing such good job in distraction department.
âITâS OKAY, WHY? BECAUSE I AM HERE!â Steph yelled, jumping from before her vehicle fully stopped. She threw something small in general direction of Batcomputer âTimmy plug it in, I made a PowerPoint!â
Duke felt blood leave his face. He wasn't sure if he wanted to know what Steph put together but he probably didn't. Tim opened it anyways.
WHY HOOPOE IS ADORABLE&CHAOTIC BEAN AND SHOULD BE PART OF THE TEAM
The title slide said, one of the clearest photos of Dani from before she started wearing mask in the background. It was close-up of girl smiling, bits of brownie on her cheeks.
âWas this photo taken with a goddamn calculator?â Tim asked with disgust so clear Duke could taste it. Metaphorically of course.
âNah, just body-cam. Her powers mess with technology a bitâ
Tim still looked displeased at the craftsmanship.
âDon't worry, it's not a bad photo. Baby Bird is just being perfectionist,â Dick placated.
Duke didn't realize that Damian froze until he unfroze and made his way to the screen, stopping less than one foot away from it. His movements were rigid, his face scrunched with distress. Alfred the Cat escaped its master probably due to hoe tense he was. Everyone in Cave quietened as soon as boy took first step and expecting mood had to run through microphones because nobody from the on-line crowd quipped in.
âThis is the green of Lazarusâ he whispered finally, sounding actually scared. Jason swore. Bruce and Cass visibly stiffened. Tim choked and he wasn't even drinking. Dick did his whinny breezy name saying thing when he wanted explanation and felt lightly betrayed.Â
It was Duke's turn to freeze because⊠it wasn't. Of course he wasn't all that well versed in the Pit, less alone its color but he did bust quite a few trafficking rings with Jason and he saw his eyes afterwards all raging, toxic, neon green glory and it wasn't the same as Daniâs. As much as he liked English and how good he was at it, it failed him at simple task of describing the obvious difference between each other. He'd have more luck describing tastes with set of color samples from IKEA or something. And really, even if he tried he would lose the fight of competence with Damian. Who wouldn't. But-
âThere is no way she has any connection with LOAâ
âWhy is that?â Damian seemed to misinterpret it as challenge like he always did when emotions were running high. Duke took a deep breath. Well, it was a moment to use all of his diplomatic skills and speak in the language of the demons.
âI've seen her fight. She would be utter disgraceâ
âIt does not prove-â
âIt doesâ Duke interrupted with the tone and mimic of person who saw too much because he did âNone of you have any say until you watch a tiny and I mean tiny ten year old tackle five Joker goons like it's a joke, by sheer virtue of super strength and intangibility-means-I-can-ignore-bullets-Signal-donât-be-such-worrywart. She should get shot, like, three times at least. And she kept laughing!â he was low key wheezing at the end because even after all this time (a week) it was fucking horrifying. Bruce made a huff that meant he was laughing and put a hand on his shoulder as a sign of support. Dick's lighthearted laugh sang from the speakers.
âDon't worry Duke, it never gets betterâ B said with mirth.
He refused to elaborate whether he meant âkids keep jumping into danger like there is no tomorrowâ or âit's equally terrifying every timeâ and Duke decided to reflect on that sentiment later. It put some things into perspective. A lot of things if he was being honest.
Also, he was not ready for stuff like that to become even semi-normal occurrence. He was ready to give her all of his Alfred cookies if it could change anything. He knew it wouldn't.Â
âDo you have any other evidence that your new acquaintance does not just fake being less experienced to make you lower your guard?â Damian asked warily.
âI had to teach her out of putting her thumb in her fist,â he deadpanned. Several people hissed in empathetic pain. Steph coughed to bring attention to where she stood in front of Batcomputer, other slide of her Power Point open. Duke recognised video from his body-cam.
âExhibit Aâ she announced. She played a video with Daniâs first mugging attempt he witnessed. Let it be said, it was a disaster.
âExhibit B '' One of Daniâs most epic fails at side-kick that ended with her falling face first to the ground.
âExhibit Câ Dani fumbled with zip-ties, looking at him utterly at loss.
âExhibit Dâ the talk about her prior training.
âWhatâs was that sound?â Dick obviously on the verge of cooing when girl on video growled. Steph stopped video.
âVery angry kittenâ Tim stated with soft smile.
âHonestly, furious girlâ Cass corrected âShe was really mad at youâ
âYeah, I know but promise of Alfredâs cookies was enough to placate herâ
âYou gave her Alfredâs cookies?!â
âShe started by giving me a lot of food on a really shitty patrol, had to repay somehowâ
âWas it from your share or-â Dick asked like it was most important thing in the world.
âMiss Hoopoe was added to my plans after she picked her new nameâ Alfred explained and shit, Duke really should get used to how man just appeared sometimes. Jumpscare the original.
âAlfred, you knew?â Bruce sounded so utterly betrayed.
âI have yet to meet her but I was informed about her presence about two weeks agoâ
âHe caught me printing mask for herâ
âAbout thatâ Steph clapped and skipped her slide show âLook at thi clueless child with such horrible disguises and codename ideasâ There was whole list of every name Dani wanted to try out and photo of her bare face. Duke kinda repressed his memories of it. It was worse than he remembered.
âDid she really tried kenting that?â
âGot it after her cousin. He used his first name as part of his alias for almost half a yearâ Duke admitted in carefree tone, knowing it would cause a mess.
âCousin?!â several people yelled in surprise.
âCaped cousin?!â
âYup. Small time hero from Illinois. As far as Iâm aware sheâs alone in Gotham but theyâre in regular contact and she has strong believe that he can and will help her if she used her panic buttonâ
âWho in their right mind letâs kid alone in Gotham?!â Jason sounded about ready to strangle Phantom.
âHe seems to be fifteen himself. And has anti-meta parents if Iâm picking things up correctly. She didnât mention them much. I highly doubt she has present parents at all, soâŠâ
âWhat the hell Narrows.â
âI donât know, itâs just a wild guessâ
âDoes it call for the rescue?â Steph asked eagerly.
âWeâre not going to Illinois to rescue Phantom if he doesnât ask for it. He has means to itâ Bruce interrupted with bone deep sigh.
âHow do you know I meant Phantom?â Duke perked up because he never mentioned this name.
âHe is from Illinois, looks almost the same as far as I can tell from the photos and they share a lot of powersâ
âI didnât know you knew about random kid hero from other state?â
âHe dropped by on few Justice Leagueâs mission. There is still dispute whether we should approach him in his city or not. He was very clear on his opinion that we should stay away. I think we really shouldnâtâ
âHow you havenât gone or sent anyone there yet?â Tim teased.
Bruce just stared at him then gestured at mountain of cases they were currently working on. Yes, they were printed. Apparently for man it made it easier to work on them like that.
âCan we focus back on untrained child you let join you on patrol, Duke?â
âYou act like I could stop her from doing her own thing if I didnât let her. Plus, even though she doesnât have combat training, she can handle herself well enough. And has this damn intangibility that makes her really hard to punchâ
âWhy didnât you tell me?â
âI didnât tell anyone other than Alfred and Steph and I wanted to wait a bit before leaving her to the wolfsâ
âThe betâ
âShut up Stephâ
âWhen did you plan on letting us know?â Bruce ignored what blonde insinuated. Duke was utterly grateful for that, he knew he would get lecture for that later but he was more than happy to leave it be for now.
âSomewhen next week. I hoped to introduce her gradually but apparently everyone knew already?â
âKids tell me things. Hoopoe made a good impression on themâ Jason explained.
âHero sightings on Twitterâ Dick admitted without a shadow of shame.
âWhat he saidâ Tim agreed âThis person from crochet dolls made one for your kid too, so in public eyes sheâs our alreadyâ
âFor the last time, she isnât my kid!â Duke groaned but as always went ignored.
âNobody expected old manâs tendencies to rub on you so fast, Narrowsâ
âShut up and this is half a reason I didnât let you meet her. All of youâ
âWith all due respect Dukeâ Babs started teasingly âYou gave us ammo yourself. You improved her diet, you brought her to The Food Track Of Mental Breakdowns, you teach her stuff, you check in on her almost as often as her cousin and their friends doâŠâ
âHow did you hack her pho- No, wrong question, why?!â
âWeâre all paranoid bastards, I needed to check out the newest bird. She legally doesnât exist btw so I suspect some shady stuff with her birth but otherwise nothing sus about her. Comms and trackers for her are waiting in drawer C19. You will give it to her tomorrowâ
âAye, aye captain Oracle maâamâ he joked.
âWait, you showed her The Food Track?â
âShe deserved itâ he gritted out.
Before this could turn into a fight or something, Alfred demanded:
âSince we are all on the same page now, I would like to extend an invitation for family dinner to miss Hoopoeâ
âWeâll eat it down here in full costumesâ
âAs you wish master Bruce. Master Duke make sure to let her knowâ
âOf course Alfredâ
And he planned to do that but Dani didnât show up. He hadnât thought much of it because she was unpredictable like that. She tended to disappear from the face of the Earth for a day or two and return with tales of her âautograph hunting tripsâ
But then she didnât show up on the next patrol too. It was unprecedented. And she hadnât responded to the check in. Three times in the row. He was getting kinda sick from the stress.
He knew Dani well enough, she wouldnât ghost him like that and in Gotham disappearing meant three things: getting kidnapped, trafficked or six feet under. To their knowledge, Dani didnât have anyone who would pay ransom for her other than Signal and no demands were made so the first option was out.
Bats launched full fledged search.
Duke himself found and busted two trafficking rings in three weeks which was around how much he did in two months on a daily basis.
Thanks to Oracle, they found Daniâs utterly crashed phone in the dead end in the Narrows. It didnât look any better.
Duke really hoped they wouldnât be too late.
With each day it seemed more likely.

Okay, so, crisis averted. Both of them, really. Red Robin had not asked or attempted to get any more of Danny's drink and the World Ending Crisis was less World Ending and more World Threatening. Either way, no one is hyped up in lethal amounts of caffeine and the world is in no more pieces than it had been before.
That brings attention to a new problem, though. It's uniquely Danny's problem and Constantine and Zatanna and Deadman won't stop laughing at him. He's also pretty sure that Raven is laughing at him in the privacy of her mind, so that's making him feel worse.
The problem is that every single hero that had been at the meeting a week ago that was not a part of the JLD has been overly concerned about him.
So what if he half died when he was fourteen and therefore will never look over either fourteen or eighteen? So what if he consumes enough caffeine to kill an elephant within a few minutes? What is he gonna do, die? That's not a real threat as long as he only fights as Phantom.
Ignoring the fact that he can, in fact, get hurt to the point of near death as Phantom. It's not like anyone knows that, though! Besides, ghosts run on god rules. They can't die, only fade when forgotten. People aren't likely to forget about most ghosts, though, even if they can't remember their names.
He's not gonna share that, though. Let Batman keep his contingency that won't work because the only contingency that will work for Phantom is the one he made himself. Tried and tested! He's marked it off of his Bingo Card.
Anyway. Heros and their kids/proteges have been trying to track him down for the entire week. He can't risk even leaving the House of Mysteries because the Supers are all probably listening out for him and they can't hear him through magic. It sucks. He just wants to go get a cup of coffee as Danny. The second he leaves, though, the Supers will be on him like bloodhounds. He'd leave as Danny, but the rest of the JLD don't know what he looks like as Danny and he'd like to keep it that way, thank you very much. Being stuck as Phantom was going to start causing issues to his human half if he doesn't get to leave soon.
Should he risk it? Is coffee that won't kill him really worth risking the Supers finding out his civilian identity? Sure, they wouldn't tell anyone, but he didn't like the idea of someone being able to pick him out of a crowd when all he wanted to do was blend in. It's why he avoided Gotham and Bludhaven, actually, but that's both self explanatory and another story for another time.
"You're still here?" Zatanna sat on the couch beside him. "You're normally gone by now. You can't not be tired of us yet."
He sighed and sunk down into the couch slightly. "Believe me, I'm tired of being stuck here, but I can't leave. I can't leave as a human because you guys don't know what I look like and, no offense, but I'd like to keep it that way. I can't leave as I am now because Superman will be on my ass quicker than I can blink!" He whined this time, "I just want a cup of coffee."
"What about your special brew?" Raven asked, coming into the room.
"I want to drink coffee as a human. That stuff will kill me if I drink it as a human."
"At least you know your limits."
"That sounded like a dig at someone, Z."
"It was."
"Why don't you just go out under a protection spell?" Raven offered, "We could cast one over you and you could leave. Superman can't hear through magic, so he won't be able to tell. Neither will Superboy."
Danny thought for a second. "You're a genius, Raven! Has anyone ever told you that?"
"A few times," she blushed.
"Well, it needs to be said more!"
Zatanna laughed. "Alright, kid, let's get you outside before you drive yourself crazy."
Practically vibrating in place, Danny waited for the protection spell to settle over him. The second it did, he was out the door and wandering the streets of whatever city the House of Mysteries decided to drop him as Danny instead of Phantom.
"Who are you," was not the question or voice he wanted to hear the second he stepped into the open as himself.
"Danny," he squeaked out through his absolute panic. He didn't dare turn around.
The sound of fabric moving minutely clues him in to the second person behind him. What the hell were these two doing out? It's the middle of the day and there's no attacks going on anywhere in Gotham!
"Where did you come from?" Robin asked.
Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit! This was really bad! Why did the House drop him *here* of all places? Does it *want* him to die again? It was very painful the first time, thank you very much! "Illinois?"
"Was that a question or an answer?" Why is Red Robin here now?!
"An-an answer?"
"Ah, you guys are scaring the little guy!" That was Nightwing. They're surrounding him! Why is Nightwing here? This is Gotham, not Bludhaven. "Give him some room to breathe."
They did not, in fact, give him room to breathe. Maybe coming outside was a bad idea. If he gets out of this no more dead than he already was, he was going to move to the middle of nowhere and become a hermit. Smallville is a town in the middle of nowhere, right? He'll retire as Phantom and move to Smallville until the people get suspicious and burn him as a witch-!
Maybe moving to a big city would be a better idea. Or locking himself in the basement of the House of Mysteries. Yeah, yeah that's a good idea.
"-even listening?"
Oh shit. They were still talking to him! Now is not the time to panic! "Gottagobye!" And then he was running.
Good job not panicking, Danny.

Hi yâall! For years Iâve loved hearing authors read their own work and also the sound of my own voice. There are definitely a few kinks to work out, but I fully intend to keep narrating my own stories here and there!
Reading The Shark Hero out loud was super fun!

Let's talk about the caffeine addiction - Kirishima x reader
Kirishima and Y/N navigate an evening of tension and care. Despite struggling with a caffeine withdrawal headache, Y/N resists drinking coffee to preserve their breakfast date the next morning.Â
Requests are OPEN!
masterlist
No one had ever really paid attention to your struggles before. You knew caffeine was an addiction, and the headache youâd had all day was definitely because of the caffeine withdrawal. But it was 7 p.m., and you couldnât have coffee. Kirishima had planned a breakfast date for the two of you tomorrow morning, and you didnât want to mess that up.
As you massaged your temple, Kirishima glanced over from the driverâs seat while waiting at a red light. His concerned eyes studied you, taking in the tension etched across your face.
âI have to stop at the gas station. Need anything, baby?â he asked, his voice a soothing rumble.
âNo,â you replied softly, trying to muster a reassuring smile.
He raised an eyebrow, his eyes narrowing slightly in suspicion, but didnât press further. Once he parked at the gas station, he got out of the car without another word. You closed your eyes, leaning your head back against the seat, wishing you could skip the party. But you knew he was excited about it. It was a reunion of sortsâa chance for his old class to be together again after so long. You didnât want to dampen his excitement, even if you felt like curling up in bed instead.
The car door opened, and the cool night air rushed in. Before you knew it, a cold bottle was pressed against your cheek. Startled, you opened your eyes to see Kirishima holding a glossy bottle of iced coffeeâvanilla, your favorite.
âWhat?â you muttered, taking the bottle from his hand. It felt cool against your fingers, and you bit your lip, hesitating.
âYouâve been nursing that headache all day. Youâre the one who wanted to come to the party,â he reminded you gently, his crimson eyes filled with concern.
âI canât. We have breakfast tomorrow, and you havenât seen all your classmates in forever, Eiji,â you protested, your voice wavering.
âIt can be breakfast for dinner. Please, drink it,â he urged, his tone sincere and caring. He reached out to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear, his touch comforting.
You looked at him, a smile slowly spreading across your face. His thoughtfulness warmed your heart. You unscrewed the cap and took a tentative sip, the sweet vanilla flavor immediately soothing your headache.
âThank you,â you said, your voice soft with gratitude. âYou always know how to make things better.â
Kirishima grinned, his sharp teeth flashing in the dim light. âThatâs what Iâm here for. Now, letâs go enjoy this party. And if youâre still not feeling great, we can leave early. Deal?â
âDeal,â you agreed, feeling a wave of relief wash over you. With Kirishima by your side, you knew you could handle anything, even a caffeine withdrawal headache at a party.

Four was honestly surprised how many people were here. It was his first big trip, and it was definitely overwhelming. He was usually a loner, but he had to admit⊠he was thankful heâd asked a friend to come along.
Legend laughed as he texted someone, face glowing with glee. He elbowed Four mischievously. âWe should definitely send pictures to Wars.â
âIs that who youâre texting?â Four asked with a smile, enjoying the cheer from his usually grumpier friend. Legend adored education conferences - his friend was nothing if not a lover of learning and exploring new things.
âOh absolutely,â Legend replied, showing his phone. âHeâs upset because I went to the emergency medicine conference and then went to this one. Personally, I think heâs just jealous because I have a cert he doesnât.â
âWait, Wars doesnât have his CCRN?â Four questioned, confused. He figured Warriors, who had everything in his life in order, would have his critical care nursing certification. It was fairly common for nurses in ICU and ED settings.
âNope!â Legend quipped with delight, obviously ecstatic that he had something over the military nurse.
âOkay, but important question: where are we going to get dinner?â
âSomewhere it doesnât cost half our paycheck.â
Four glanced around at the skyscrapers. âUh⊠not sure weâre going to manage that. I didnât think the Hebra Mountains had cities like this.â
âWell, then we can contemplate Brugada Syndrome and complicated EKG rhythms while we starve,â Legend supposed.
âOh, donât be like that,â Four laughed. âThis is a trip, we shouldnât worry about the cost too much.â
âWe donât make Timeâs salary.â
âBut we make decent salary.â
Legend bit his lips, stubborn. Four narrowed his eyes analytically. âThis isnât about how much the food costs; itâs because youâve blown your budget on coffee, isnât it?â
His friend immediately flushed, guilty as charged. âThey charge ten rupees for coffee! Ten!! This place is ridiculous!â
âI told you your caffeine addiction would come back to bite you someday,â Four smiled. âOr, well, more so than it already has.â
âI swear, if you bring up the SVT episode one more timeââ
#writing#lu in healthcare#lu four#lu legend#Ok the last few classes have been WAY more interesting than the one that was putting me to sleep lol#poor Legend will never live down his SVT fiasco#Even tho Four definitely put himself in SVT from too much coffee one time#But he converted himself out of it without telling anyone#The world will never know#Except Wild because he was there#I should write that lol#Gonna go to a trauma assessment class and I am definitely just gonna be thinking of Four and his trauma ICU LOL#Hope everyone is having a good day! :D#Warriors is totally jealous of Four and Legend btw#Legend is giving him minute-by-minute updates just to annoy him and show him what heâs missing out on#Also why the FRICK is an iced coffee TEN DOLLARS HERE WHAT THE HECK#Cities are stupid expensive#I donât even really drink caffeine when Iâm not working but I did a hard sleep cycle reset and could use some#BUT NOT FOR THESE PRICES WHAT THE FRICK

oh nothing, just thinking about the first time you hold Vash while you two sleep.
he's so so hesitant when you curl up next to him. wrapping your arms around him has him going stiff as a board, but you knew that would happen. you tell him to just relax, go to sleep. he doesn't for hours.
he tries to relax, like you say. but every little movement has him going still. his thoughts are awash with worry - what if you don't actually want to hold him? what if he wakes you? what if your arm goes numb? his fight or flight kicks in, and he thinks about leaving every other second, believing he's the worst cuddle partner and that you deserve better. this was the worst idea ever.
when you roll away in your sleep, however, it has Vash longing for your touch again. without really even thinking about it, he pulls you close again. this time he's the one wrapped around you, not the other way. and it feels good. it feels so good. he doesn't mind when your head puts his flesh arm to sleep, and he finds out he loves feeling your breath fan across his collar bone. when you burrow your head into his chest with a sleepy grumble, he melts. Vash manages to brush his lips on your forehead while you sleep, giving in to temptation. he brushes his hand through your hair carefully, and finally, finally, is able to sleep. this was the best idea ever.
#the caffeine has HIT and i am ready to rumble#as for this idk idk i think vash needs to go at his own pace for things and have some control over a situation to feel truly comfy#he def gets better the more you cuddle and eventually loves being the little spoon#but at the beginning he needs to be the big spoon just for his own sanity lmao#trigun#vash the stampede#trigun stampede#tristamp#writing#vash x reader#reader insert#self insert#vash the stampede x reader#nova writes#trigun x reader

Liar | August 5th | 776 words | @rosekillermicrofic | T
âIâm telling you, Barty! I didnât take them!â
Barty chased Evan around the dorm as Evan tried to hold on to the biscuits Barty had wrapped up in a bit of napkin from supper. Always had a bit of a sweet tooth, his friend. All the more reason to take them for himself. And Barty was always so protective of his sweets.
âLIAR!â Barty yelled as he tackled Evan to the bed, both of them hitting the sheets in a tangle of limbs. Evan could hear Regulus laughing at them from his side of the room. The little shit. Evan squirmed under Barty as he tried to snatch the biscuits from where they were clenched tightly in his fist. Evan honestly wouldnât be surprised if the biscuits were crushed by now.
It didnât really matter. He honestly thought Barty would forgive him for anything. As much as he was protective over his sweets, he would put Evan first over anything, and it went the other way around, too.
Barty pinned his hands to the bed, but he wrenched the one the biscuits were clenched in out of his grip and, quick as a flash, unwrapped the napkin and stuffed both in his mouth. Barty gasped, looking down at him in horror. Evan narrowed his eyes up at him and chewed slowly and carefully, taunting him by relishing the stolen biscuits.
âMy biscuits! You git!â Evan swallowed, still holding Bartyâs gaze.
âTheyâre mine now,â he deadpanned, with as much of a straight face he could muster.
At this, Barty burst into laughter and so did Evan. Soon, they were both cackling like maniacs on the covers, the biscuits long forgotten about.
---
Evan didnât know what heâd done, but he must have done something for Barty to not be talking to him. It wasnât really like many of their normal disagreements where they wouldnât look at each other for a day or two, but then all would be forgotten and forgiven because they could both hold grudges, but not at each other.
Never at each other.
Now, however, Barty hadnât been talking to him for two days, since that party where theyâd all been drunk (and some high) out of their minds. He didnât really remember what had happened then, but he was sure something had. Needless to say, he was a bit worried.
After these past two days, it was clear to him that he couldnât, nor was he ever going to, live without Barty.
After all, Evan did love him.
Today was a bit different from the last two days. In his first class, which he and Barty shared, he sat next to Pandora and not Barty, taking the hint and moving his seat reluctantly. After a while, he had the strangest feeling, like eyes on the back of his head. He turned to look behind him and his eyes met Bartyâs. The next thing he knew, Barty was ducking his head quickly towards his paper.
This went on for the rest of the day, leaving Evan very confused and annoyed.
He decided it had to come to a stop at supper. He noticed Barty sneak two biscuits into a napkin for the next day like he always did. Evan felt a grin spreading across his face as he got the perfect idea.
After supper, they were in their dorm, just lounging around in their pajamas, and Reg was trying to get the Transfigurations reading done while Barty bothered him. Evan crept up behind Barty and pocketed the biscuits, not making a sound. Then he tapped Barty, smirking.
Evan stuck the biscuits into his mouth, chewed and swallowed, but Barty only caught the tail end of that action and seemed confused.
âI think you dropped something,â he said, holding up the empty napkin, and Barty, even in the midst of a grudge, was never one to not protect his precious sweets.Â
âYou have them, you git!â
âI didnât take them,â he said, even as a smug smile spread across his face, revealing his lie. Barty looked back at him and grinned, and Evan frowned. That was unusual. Barty stepped forward and placed one hand on Evanâs cheek and drew closer, so close that Evan had to look up to see his face. Evan could feel his friendâs breath on his face, and his heart quickened.
âLiar,â he whispered. Evan couldnât take anymore and yanked Barty down by the front of his shirt, meeting his lips in a searing kiss. And there, in his best friendâs - boyfriendâs, now? - arms, he felt right.Â
Barty broke the kiss when he started laughing, and Evan smiled.
âSo what if I am?â

The Kn8 Men and their Braincells: A Conjecture
Aoi: Always has the Braincell. Is always using the Braincell. Never Tells anyone he has the Braincell. Refuses to elaborate about the Braincell
Haruichi: Had a Braincell, but it's not so much on a cool down, more so two different Timers that say How Long It Will Be Active and When It Will Come Back. The timers are never proportional.
Iharu: Has Half of a Braincell. To his credit, this isn't a bad thing. For some reason, his half of the Braincell acts as a signal tower for everyone else's Braincell, but because it's not His, the attracted Braincell slingshots itself over to who it belongs to in the first place. Meaning that Iharu unintentionally raises everyone else's chance of being smarter.
Reno: Has a Special Braincell. When left by itself, it sets Reno on Demon Time. But this state cannot be sustained for long. Making it so that Reno is preset to piggy back off of anyone else's Braincell that is within Bandwith Vicinity.
Kafka: Has his own, but it runs off of the shittiest Wi-Fi. It did not survive the conversion from Landline to Broadband. It is because of this Braincell and how Reno's runs that led to the infamous scenes such as Reno jumping out of the building first and Having no right to be the one to carry Kafka on his shoulders.
Hoshina: Runs off of Rhino Logic. It exists suspended in a roided up and very thick fog. If you can get close enough to establish that you are not a Threat, the Braincell turned him into a very loud and mischievous Husky of a person. Stay outside of visible range and you will always be perceived as a Threat.
