I don’t know why, but I love sticking our three main girls together.  Probably because then we all can have art of our characters, minimum effort on my part.  Normally these pictures don’t go as well together, but this time, I managed to pose them in a coherent cute fashion.  :D
So this is @anijeltaventry’s Te’ah, @callistochan87’s Caecily, and my Eileen.  Ceacily hasn’t really been a Thing since 2017, but considering I ended up using a similar plot point that she has in her story in my story, I had connected the two from the beginning.
(Don’t even ask me how I remember that plot point, since it’s been seven years since I saw that, lol)
Their stories aren’t really that similar – Te’ah’s is fantasy/scifi, with the love interest actually being an alien to their world.  Ceacily’s is, like, an adventure quest sort of thing?  Not sure on her’s.  And Eileen’s is D&D-esque, with levels and a party system and dungeons and the like.  But eh, they have monsters in them (I think in Te’ah’s case), and that’s all that matters, lol.
I actually am considering (mildly) changing the name of The Hero’s Party.  Te’ah’s story is The Weight of the World, Caecily’s is The Edge of the Earth, and then Eileen is The Hero’s Party?  I was thinking The Changing of Fate, just to match everything up.
(But not really, since this isn’t like Angelus Dei, Aspera Virtus, and Casus Belli, in that we actually connected them.  Just thought it was amusing they choose similar sounding names to each other.)
I’m also considering changing Eileen’s name.  Like, it’s okay, especially since her character’s supposed to be a bit bland and ordinary, but I’m kinda meh about it.  I can’t think of her as anything but at this point.
(I just looked up names similar to Alicia, her sister, because I do like that name, and one of them was Olivia, so now I’m sort of tossing that one around and seeing if it sticks, lol)
I do like how they turned out, like they’re actually posing (awkwardly) for the invisible camera.  Which would make more sense if they weren’t medieval fantasy based.  (Ceacily is more 18th century, but eh, still not cameras.)  But still, turned out cute!
(Also, I just realized that Te’ah totally looks like a tavern wrench and now I can’t unsee it, especially with the background that I chose.  :P)

TimKon Fic Recs
This list will include all ratings and tags, so read at your own discretion! :)
pain is cold water by sleepdeprivedphilosopher - Rated T
“Kon is getting an apartment,” Tim says and his fingers are digging into his lifeline. “He needs a roommate.” He doesn’t, but Tim prays he won’t mind. “Where?” Dick demands then winces at his tone. “San Francisco,” Tim answers. Tim was never meant to be a permanent part of the Batfamily. He took on the role of Robin because Batman needs a Robin, but Batman has a Robin and even more people in his corner now and he doesn’t need Tim. or Tim is used to putting his wants up on a shelf in favor of what the people around him need, but maybe it’s time for him to take them down, dust them off, and see what’s inside.
Top Shelf Goods by JpegDotJpeg - Rated T
“You know,” Conner started after licking his thumb and trying to rub off the near illegible numbers scrawled onto his inner wrist. “If my sixteen year old self heard me say this he’d have a conniption, but I’m getting really tired of people trying to hookup with me.”
“Well, I’d offer to pretend to be your girlfriend, but I actually am trying to get laid tonight,” Cassie explained, then drained the rest of her glass.
“Don’t worry, Kon,” Tim said, without putting an ounce of forethought into it. “I’ll scare them off for you.”
Or, Tim pretends to be Conner's boyfriend, just to help him avoid unwanted attention. Because that's what friends do. Pretend to be romantically involved even though they are definitely not interested in each other in that way and it would totally never happen. Definitely.
Fetching by Salmon_Pink - Rated E
Krypto likes to take care of Kon as much as Kon likes to take care of Krypto. When Kon is hungry, Krypto fetches him food. When Kon is sleepy, Krypto fetches him blankets. And when Kon is horny, Krypto fetches him Tim. Which leaves Kon the not-so-fun job of awkwardly explaining to Red Robin why he's been dragged to Smallville in the middle of the night by a well-meaning superdog.
The Dating Habits Of Batfish by Calamityjim - Not Rated
Tim and Conner spend some time together.
fill in the blanks by mindshelter - Rated T
“You?” Tim blurts. Holy shit. “You’re Kon?” A nod. “Are you in any pain?” he asks again. Kon’s skin is sun-kissed, cheekbones dusted with a fine smattering of freckles; he is, without exaggeration, the prettiest person Tim has ever seen. “No, I’m—great,” he says, fidgeting. “Do you, uh, come here often?” Kon raises a brow. “To the medbay?” he intones. “Definitely more often than I’d prefer.”
And I'll Tell You No Lies by caecily - Rated G
In a universe where you can't lie to your soulmate, it doesn't take long for Robin to run into trouble with Superboy.
time flies by by Laroyena - Rated T
Jon Kent is Superboy. Tim's gut instinct tells him that's wrong. (Timkon fix-it where reboot!Tim misses Kon like a phantom limb. And then he gets him back.)
there when the light comes in by shipyrds - Rated E
“Well, that was fun,” Tim said, his hands shoved into his pockets. “It was a nice plan, but you know us. We can just drive back to San Francisco and I’ll get a flight.” Kon looked at his posture, the quintessentially Tim tilt of his head. “No, dude, are you kidding me? You’re gonna deny me this rite of passage? Get back in the car. It’s gonna be epic.” Tim had smiled, a big bright thing that lasted all the way until they got back on the highway and Kon tried to fight him for the aux cord because like hell was he going to listen to the same Marina and the Diamonds EP for 57 hours. — tim and kon go on an epic cross-country road trip and have some realizations!
Obligatory Nap Time by egg_thief - Rated G
“I know what you’re doing,” Tim says with a sigh, wrapping his arms loosely around Kon’s waist as he feels himself relaxing against his will. “It won’t work.” Kon hums. “You sure? Your heart rate is slowing. And your breathing is evening out.” Tim curses under his breath. “I’m not gonna fall asleep though.” “Sure you aren’t,” Kon murmurs, still softly petting at Tim’s hair. Or: Tim hasn’t been sleeping lately. Kon’s determined to at least get him to take a nap
apple cider blues by merils - Rated T
A farmer's market rolls around in beautiful autumnal Smallville. Kon asks Tim to be his pretend boyfriend for the day, in order to stave off some old ladies who, upon finding out that he's gay, have been trying to set him up with their bisexual grandson. And surely the matchmaking grannies are the only reason Kon wants Tim to be his date at the farmer's market. It's too bad, because Tim would really love it if this was a real date, but... it's not like he'd ever say no to Kon, not when Kon asks him with those big ol' Kent family puppy-dog eyes. So here he is. Pining. At a farmer's market. (...Someone should probably tell Kon that this date is fake.)
I Wanna Ruin Our Friendship by LilliputianDuckling - Rated G
Kon-El is a clone of Superman, grown in a lab with implanted memories of whatever a bunch of scientists decided was important information.
Seeing Robin today, there seems to be a gap in his education.
Superboy discovers he likes boys
there you were by mindshelter - Rated T
“You know, the cool thing about me,” Tim says, voice gone quiet and petal-soft, “is that even when I didn’t care whether I lived or not, I was pretty goddamn hard to kill.” Kon sighs, eyes glued to his feet. His hand is still encircled around Tim’s arm, trailing up to the bend of his elbow. “Also, who has the worse track record with dying, between the two of us?” Well, Kon thinks, that’s—that’s rude. “For fuck’s sake.” Kon throws his head back and groans, but it’s nullified by the upward twitch of his mouth. “That was terrible.” And definitely meant to lighten the mood. Tim is playing him like a harp, and he knows it; he grins back, wriggling free to knock Kon on the shoulder.   or; in the wake of a suck-ass year, kon and tim gravitate back together.
His Tiny Person by awhitehead17 - Rated G
"Kryptonian's have something called soulmates and every single Kryptonian has one. We know who our soulmates are because mini versions of them manifest to us. To begin with you won't recognise them, or even know their name, until you actually meet them in person. You will meet, you are destined to, but whether you get along or not is another story." When Kon finds a tiny person hanging around him he's extremely confused but comes to adore him anyway. However its still a complete shock when Kon learns that he's known his soulmate for years and has just never realised it.

Cæcilie Overgaard — There Is a Home (Clang)
Tumblr media
There Is A Home by Cæcilie Overgaard
Cæcilie Overgaard’s “There is a Home” brings together synthesis, found sound, ambient recordings, as well as vocals and acoustic trumpet to craft a thoughtful and personal musical statement. At just seven tracks and 34 minutes, the album feels judiciously edited, with each piece evincing satisfyingly distinct textures and melodies. “Mic Check One” opens the album with a filter sweep revealing an ensemble of crisp ambient recordings and warm synth tones. “Nightfly” moves from recorded crackles to a rhythmic, plucked melody. “Static” foregrounds electronic timbres. A melodic sensibility and pervasive mood of melancholy or searching are constants across these varied contexts.
Overgaard’s has a strong knack for understated rhythms that feel integral. The title track’s preamble gives over to a polyrhythm coalescing from a mid-range pulsing waveform, telephonic chirp and drum synth, providing a subtle focal point. On “Static” a small timing hiccup (presumably deliberate) causes the track’s rhythms to feel more like a softly jostling machine than a “beat”. The album’s closing, and longest track “Moondance” weaves together a host of rhythms, some of which are synthetic and others perhaps performed with found objects for an effect that is hushed while energetic.
The artist’s spatial treatments sometimes fail to do justice to the material on which they’re being used. The sung passages of “Skyggeplet” are pretty and well-executed, but the distant, dream-like ambience surrounding them feels less than fresh. One can imagine a more striking effect if they unfolded in a more intimate sonic space. A similar criticism can be made of the melodic parts sometimes carried by Overgaard’s trumpet. On the other hand, spatial treatments on sparser moments like “A Simple Mind” succeed in forging a compelling whole from synthetic and acoustic elements.
An ambient album organized around the theme of “home” inevitably participates in a long history of romantic Western attitudes regarding connection to place. In the 20th century, Martin Heidegger produced one prominent (if less than perfectly clear) expression of this tradition focused on “dwelling”. For Heidegger, dwelling didn’t imply merely residing consistently in a spot, or an effortless one-ness with the universe. Instead, it meant caring for one’s world in an authentic way. From this perspective, being-at-home is an ongoing process: it must be attempted or ventured, carries risks of missteps, is often incomplete or imperfect. Attempting it is nonetheless vital to being human. The gentle but often probing and unsettled sounds of There Is a Home resonate with this ethos.

In Copenhagen, The Publication will last for one week and address the current state of the immaterial arts. From relational aesthetics, over social sculpture to “situations”, contemporary art practices have been addressing the production of subjectivity in the realm of experience economy, using life as means and ends. A conversation, a behaviour, a movement, or a mood has become the brush, but also the painting. What are the relations between the objectification and the production of life in art and society? What happens to art when life is capitalized into new forms of production?
It is strictly edited by Galerie, but anyone can smuggle in content.

Given that a lot of us are stuck inside with all this COVID-19 stuff, do you have any good TimKon fic recommendations to keep us more happily occupied?
Haha yes! I have this list from years ago but it is way past time for an update.
Disclaimer: these are just things I like, please heed all tags and warnings etc. I'm also not reccing any WIPs because unfinished fics kill me every time.
Crystal Clear by Merit andAnd I'll Tell You No Lies by caecily
Two short takes on soulmate tropes that have to go first because I love them so much, I love soulmate aus, Tim and Kon are soulmates, the end.
Where There's a Wish by LeeayreBeing Robin’s vessel is hard enough: the exhaustion, the life-threatening late night activities, the bruises and bullet holes and broken bones. Trying to hide all that from his incredibly suspicious, incredibly hot new roommate while maintaining his studies and placating his parents? Tim has never had it so hard. Especially since said roommate doesn’t actually know he’s Superboy.
So the setup for this is unusual, I'm not sure if it's based on anything but: superhero identities are Personas, independent (basically magical) personalities created by the wishes of a person or groups of people who act through hosts that have the will to manifest whatever that persona does. Basically: Robin is an independent persona, Tim shares his body with him and when Robin manifests the costume and all the gadgets appear. It's explained throughout the story, but just in case you start it and are like wtf is happening. This possibly should go in the thirds section because the actual pairings in this are: Robin/Tim, Red Robin/Tim, Tim/Kon, Red Robin/Tim/Kon, Red Robin/Superboy, and Red Robin/Superboy/Tim. Red Robin can also be kind of dubconny so watch out for that if it's a concern.
Wing Beats in Reverse by firefrightJason Todd is the third Robin, not the second, growing up in shadow of Tim Drake's death. Despite this, he still manages to form strong bonds with his new family. Especially Damian, who wishes to atone for his past mistakes with Jason's predecessor. But when he's fifteen, a mysterious red hooded figure kidnaps Jason from the rooftops of Gotham, and after that his life will never be the same again.
A Robin reversal AU (ie Damian is the eldest, Dick the youngest) that's Jason-centric but of course that doesn't lessen the Tim angst. Or the Kon angst when he finds out Tim is alive. Hopeful ending, but it doesn't fix everything.Other pairings: JayRoy, StephCass (barely)
Time Flies by by LaroyenaJon Kent is Superboy. Tim's gut instinct tells him that's wrong.(Timkon fix-it where reboot!Tim misses Kon like a phantom limb. And then he gets him back.)
Sometimes you just need to cry over the lack of Kon in your life and this fic provides the PERFECT excuse. Heartbreaking and then happy. (Also brings Colin back UNLIKE DC.)Other pairings: implied Clex
Not Completely Powerless After All by ChimaeraKittenNobody was quite prepared for the kid who runs the company to visit, but they manage, in fact, they might be pleasantly surprised; they weren't expecting him to be nice. Of course, they weren't expecting him to be a possible ninja either, but you gotta take the good with the bad.
Outsider POV!!! I have never watched Powerless so you definitely don't need to be familiar with it, this is just a glorious casefic told by someone who doesn’t know it’s a case.
Matters of the Heart by DMWith Clark off-world as an ambassador to Earth, Conner has to watch over Metropolis. Though it should be straightforward, there appears to be something amiss with seemingly random crimes happening around the city. Conner has a hunch that they’re connected and calls in his best friend to help. But as the two of them spend time together working the case, Conner realizes that his feelings for Tim might not be what he had thought.
A long casefic with feelings, basically everything I ever want.
Stumbling Home by bewaretheboojumIn his mid-twenties, Tim moves back to Gotham City after several years living abroad. He's feeling adrift, unfocused and a little off balance as he tries to re-establish a life in his home town.Kon is a fireman by day and superhero by night. When mysterious fires start cropping up in Metropolis, all signs point to arson. Who better to help him get to the bottom of this arson case than Tim? And really, it seems like Tim could use the distraction...
Another casefic with older TimKon. I didn't like the initial setup with Tim having abandoned his friends for years but it won me over in the end.
the honesty in your body by LaroyenaLuthor's tech saved Kon's life at the cost of his mind. Tim must take a feral Kon across space to restore his humanity... which is just as difficult as one may think.(Batman Omegaverse AU: unabashed TimKon porn detailing their original get-together in their early teens to their definite get-together in their late teens. But mostly porn.)
Yep, this is mostly omegaverse porn and it's excellent and I love it, I really don't know what else to tell you.Other pairings: BruDick
I'm Alone Here, I Think by unluckylokiSuperboy is fighting robots in San Francisco and remembers something that wasn't.There's a new priest in the Naxos temple appointed by Dream of the Endless.Kon is missing something. Tim is missing everything. One day Krypto practically drags Superboy to a remote island in Europe and there's a dark haired guy smiling at Kon like he knows him.Maybe he does.
Sandman crossover but I haven't read Sandman in 500 years so you don't need to know most of it. Kind of identity porn, but more...fraught. Excellent Tim angst (there...might be a pattern here) and I'll be honest I'm not very into all the witches and stuff but overall very enjoyable.
Nowhere But Forward by MishaBerryIt shouldn't have happened the way it did. When Kon finds Tim in Paris, it leads to a night that neither of them will ever forget, for better or for worse. Tim is then forced to confront something he's been denying about himself for a very long time, and Kon begins to question some things about himself. The road ahead is full of twists and turns, but there's nowhere to go but forward.
I really love long fics, but tbh I found this started to drag a little towards the end. I still enjoy it overall with delicious Tim angst.
Plus One SectionSometimes when pickings are slim we can try food we wouldn't normally eat, and sometimes it's delicious. Which is to say these are fics with Tim/Kon/Another Person. Don't go any further if this upsets your OTP soul, I completely understand.
TimKonBartTroika by glitterandlubeThis is kind of written like crack and definitely won't appeal to everyone, but it's a fix-it of preboot where instead of living with the Kents in Smallville and becoming the country boy of Teen Titans (2003) Kon moves to Gotham and then scores with Tim and eventually Bart. Follows the previous canon's timeline almost to the start of Red Robin. Some (honestly warranted) bashing of Steph but also of Lois Lane (???).Also contains explicit Tim/Dick.Other pairings: Clex, JayDick
TimKonCassieTrymmetry by glymrWhy do they feel like something's missing?
Set in a universe where Kryptonians form triad soulbonds. Kon and Cassie have both always been thinking about Tim when they're together, and after Kon comes back they can no longer deny it. They have to find Tim. I wish this was ten times longer.
JayTimKon
Heart of the Hoard by firefrightJason is a knight on a mission to save a captive young woman from a cruel and vicious dragon. However, when Jason reaches the keep the girl is kept in, it quickly becomes clear that not all is as it seems with his quest. For starters, Lady Timothea is actually Lord Timothy, and - as Jason soon discovers - he's hardly a prisoner in his tower.
Perfect because Kon is an ACTUAL DRAGON though it does lean on his YJ cartoon characterization.
I (Don't) Want to Believe by chibinightowl and strikeyourcolors
FBI agents Tim Drake and Conner Kent are sent to Arkham Heights High School to investigate a series of unexplainable incidents that have both staff and students on edge. Tim's firmly of the opinion the school is haunted while Kon is positive the occurrences can be explained in a more reasonable manner. After all, he doesn't believe in ghosts.Right? Right?
Horror casefic where Tim had a previous thing with Jason but also a thing with Kon so sharing is the way to go, especially when you're more (or maybe just equally) concerned about being murdered by ghosts in a haunted former asylum.
Okay I am stopping now because otherwise I will continue forever. I hope this satisfies some hunger.

I loved that wrightworth fic you recced (and am delighted to see you getting into the fandom)—have there been any other fics in the fandom that you’d recommend?
Hell yeah there have!
Decisive Evidence by caecily: In a rare turn of events, Apollo and Athena work together to prosecute a case, that case being “Are Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth in love?” with Wright and Edgeworth co-defending.
You Can’t Kill a Phoenix by desidelite: Everybody gossips about how much ridiculous crap Phoenix has survived over the years.
Surprises by LaterKater: In which a severely jetlagged Maya crashes in Phoenix’s apartment and accidentally finds out he’s dating Miles.
Oddities by apollofrito: The gang plans a surprise party for Phoenix.
Of Locked Doors by rose_willow: Miles gets stabbed and Phoenix is angsty about it.
Murder of Phoenix(es) by lilacSkye: Phoenix gets shot and everybody is angsty about it.
Lace by SeptSapphire: Canon divergence. Miles gets poisoned by Dahlia Hawthorne after the Terry Fawles case, and ends up reuniting with Phoenix a bit earlier than expected.
The Peace of the Dead by Commander_Freddy: Phoenix and Miles get engaged and Maya channels Gregory so they can ask him if he’s like, cool with that.
You Are My Friend (But Don’t Believe My Lies) by seamarcc: Writeworth. Miles is like “Hey Wright I’m happy with being your friend” and a bunch of Psyche-Locks appear, whoops.
A couple E-rated fics:
Gravity by Euphorion: Klapollo slow burn, complicated by Apollo getting doxxed and harassed by Klavier’s more zealous fans.
Interruptus by prospectkiss: Miles and Phoenix are just trying to have sex in peace and people keep walking in no matter where they go.

FR Artist Appreciation!
There are SO MANY amazing artists in the FR community, but the top 3 that I find myself going back to and coveting art by the most are @bonepriests, @gainstrive, and @cecils-dragons!
Bonepriests is a very close friend of mine, and I have watched their art grow over the last 4 years, watching them go through all of art school. Their design aesthetic is amazing, taking cues from vintage artists like Charley Harper but with the upscale vibe of modern runway fashion. Their use of shape and color blows my mind and even though I’ve watched them complete a piece from start to finish, I still don’t know how they do it.
Gainstrive is one of the biggest names in the FR art community, for good reason! They have a unique style and they absolutely own it. They are the master of beef, and they serve up a heaping helping of RPG design aesthetics with it. They have some of the cleanest linework I’ve ever seen, and I love the sheer variation you can find in their designs.
Caecilis is an artist that I only noticed fairly recently, but he immediately drew me in with his use of bright, carefree color blocking style. You can tell that all of his designs come from the same person, but there’s a huge variation in silhouette that I’m just in awe of. Each of his designs just screams personality and I always find myself looking forward to his art, be it gijinka sales or just drawings of his OCs.
Tell me who your favorite FR artists are! Make a post and tag it #FR artist appreciation!

Appia Antica & Saint Cecilia’s Basilica
16/05/2018: Today Shane and the boys intended to walk down Via Apia Antica or if possible, hiring a bike, the better option. The road was built during 312 B.C. and is lined with mausoleums and tombs of ancient Rome's dead as they were not permitted to be buried within the walls of the city. The Appia Antica was Rome's first gateway to the east connecting Rome with Capua, and eventually to Brindisi on Italy's south eastern coast where Roman ships would set sail for Egypt and Greece. During this time Jo and Cecilia planned to revisit the Trastevere district and visit Saint Cecilia's Basilica. The boys left a bit after eight, headed past the Coliseum to Circus Maximus, turned left into Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, and past the ruins of the Baths of Caracalla. The road from the chariot fields was three wide lanes wide and quite busy. As much as the central road was busy and clear of traffic, the two outside roads provided safer access and local traffic only, both lined with cars parked with a little more consideration than in the middle of the city.

At the end of Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, the road hit a major intersection, but they kept on straight ahead, keeping to the right hand side of a fork in the road. They ended up along Via di Porta San Sebastiano, had they have veered to the left they would have been in Via di Porta Latina, two ancient roads that bound Parco degli Scipioni, a park created by the joining of the first century AD columbarium of Pomponius Hylas and the tomb of the famous Scipioni family. The tomb was constructed around 280 B.C. by Lucius Cornelius Scipio Barbatus, great grandfather of Scipio Africanus, the great general who defeated Hannibal and his elephants at the Battle of Zama eighty years later.

A few hundred metres further on we finally passed through the Arch of Drusus and Porta San Sebastiano. We were effectively outside of the walls of Rome.
Tumblr media
The so-called Arch of Drusus was an ancient arch that was utilised when Caracalla built the Aqua Antoniniana to supply water to his baths.
After passing through the gates they encountered a very busy cross road and from this point on, Via Appia Antica was also very busy. Walking along the side of the road, there was occasionally no room for pedestrians and also a bit hairy, but as the road got further along it widened out to where they could avoid the traffic, eventually reaching the bike shop that Shane and Isaac hired a couple of bikes from a few years earlier. Nothing had changed so they headed in and hired three bikes and a lock so they could look around as well.

With a licence holding the security on the bikes and five euro each per hour, the lady behind the counter handed over a good map of the road with recommended sites, advising that access to the catacombs of San Callisto and entire area  were closed as it was Wednesday. Not only had they missed out on the catacombs but if they could battle the hill at the entrance, it was a safe passage avoiding more of the hairy parts of the main road. The gates were locked so they rode along the hairy part.
While the boys did their thing with the bikes, the girls made plans to go back to the Travestere district to  check out Saint Cecilia Basilica. As Cec's back was still playing up from the fall at Trevi Fountain, they planned to take a taxi rather than attempt the three and a half kilometre walk. Upon finding a taxi at the rank across from the apartment, the driver told them it would cost them fifteen euro. Cecilia's response was priceless. "What! To drive us three kilometres! You've got to be kidding mate!" She then said "Come on Joey, we will walk and find someone else. We're not getting ripped off by this bastard." Jo wondered if the taxi driver knew he just copped an Aussie spray.
After entering their destination for walking  into the phone, Google Maps had them walking toward the Basilica. By the time that they found more taxis, there was still two kilometres to go. They kept walking though as those taxi drivers still wanted fifteen euro for the remaining distance. Their walk took them past the Forum, hooked a left around Altare della Patria (colloquially known as the Wedding Cake) and the small unobtrusive ruins of Comune di Roma alongside and eventually across the Tiber again.

One of the few remaining examples of how most Romans used to live. This Capitoline insula dates to around the year 110. Effectively a block of flats. Shops (tabernae) were on the ground floor with a few floors of apartments above. The shops are now nine metres below street level. Unlike these days the cheapest rents were the top floors as when a fire broke out, the top floor tenants were the ones more than likely getting burnt.
Just after passing the catacombs of San Callista on Apia Antica, the boys struck the catacombs of San Sebastiano with not many people around, so they headed in and asked about tickets. The English tour started in fifteen minutes for eleven euro each so after paying up they waited, taking interest in the displays in the foyer and the inside of the basilica.
Tumblr media
Basilica di San Sebastiano
Located between the second and third mile of the Appian Way, the current basilica was built during the seventeenth century on top of whatever was left of Emperor Constantine's Basilica Apostolorum built some thirteen centuries earlier. Basilica Apostolorum was built in honour of apostles Peter and Paul. Below Constantine's Basilica was ad catacumbas, the Christian catacombs that utilised the pozzolana quarry that the Romans had dug for their concrete. The three levels of catacombs held thousands of tombs ranging from the simple burial niche, and there were plenty of those, to Arcosoli and Cubicoli. The bodies were interred in the niches, wrapped in a shroud and covered with quicklime in order to promote the decomposition process and disinfect the tomb. The niche was then sealed.
When it was the boys turn, an American or Canadian guide escorted them to the inside of the Basilica an told of the history of the church and the story of Saint Sebastian. No tall stories here. No sticking his head under his arm and going home like Saint Miniato.
The guide also warned before heading into the catacombs that they were quite welcome to take photographs everywhere except in the catacombs. He explained that the church had no issues with taking pictures but the Vatican owned the catacombs and taking photos was strictly forbidden. Only one thing to do, hang around the back of the group. They were taken beneath the basilica via a steep set of steps within the foyer area and were immediately negotiating narrow cavities with side passages that were full of small empty tombs. Apparently, according to our guide, Romans were rather small people.
Tumblr media
Underground tombs all empty
They kept moving through the narrow corridors, all along behind the group and snapping away. As they reached the underground burial area of San Sebastiano himself, they had another guide right up their clacker escorting a private German group, with the agility of Erwin Rommel. "No photos" came the continual yell as people around them had the same idea. Timed correctly, they still managed get a few more, but not of the excellent family ones which were directly below the basilica floor. The brick piers of the floor were founded on the rock that the crypts were carved into.
Originally a Roman soldier during the late third century, San Sebastiano got himself into some hot water with Emperor Diocletian for persistently converting the pagans to Christians. Now Diocletian, stabiliser of Rome and Christian persecutor, thought he would sort Sebastiano out by making him target practice for his archers, ordering him to be tied to a stake or tree, depending on which painting you believe and filling him with arrows to the point where he apparently resembled a sea urchin. The archers, thinking he was dead, left the scene allowing Irene of Rome to drag him away and nurse him back to health so Diocletian could have another go. This time San Sebastiano was beaten to death and thrown into the sewers, only to be removed and buried in the catacombs below Rome. The double martyr and gay icon was eventually reburied beneath the Basilica.
One of the characters that San Sebastiano converted, a woman named Zoe, had apparently been a mute for a few years and as soon as she converted to Christianity, her speech returned to her. A bit like Brian jumping on top of the hermit. The hermit hadn't said a word for eighteen years until Brian came along. A miracle.
After exiting the bowels of the basilica via a staircase back into the nave, the relationship between the memorial to San Sebastiano and his burial site became more apparent. They were directly above and below each other.

The next stop was a quick one at the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, a large masonry structure with an imposing cylindrical tomb as its centre piece. Built between 30BC and 20BC, the mausoleum holds, or used to hold the remains of Cecilia Metella, the daughter of Roman Consul,  Quintus Caecilius Metellus Creticus, and daughter-in-law of quaestor, Marcus Licinius Crassus who served under Julius Caesar. The family must have been well off for such a memorial. It only cost five Euro to get in but there wasn't much there. Still interesting though. The ticket seller told them that the ticket also allowed entry into a villa complex further down the road which was much more interesting.

After the ride up the hill to get to the mausoleum dad needed a rest, his muscles were jelly. History dictated that an oasis was just over the hill, at just over the three mile mark, so riding a short distance to the Appia Antica Caffe, they managed to put their feet up and have a feed and a beer (and a couple of Crème Broulee's for Thomas). Heading off after the rest, they took on the bumpy surface (at times very bumpy) of Via Appia Antica.
Tumblr media
Via Appia Antica. A bit bumpy but this was the smooth bit
The next stop was beyond the fifth mile and prompted by a sign on the roadside and an interesting building behind the trees. An inkling of interest took everyone down a gravel lane and to the recently acquired Santa Maria Nova complex which once belonged to the Olivetan monks and the latest addition to the Parco Archeologico dell'Appia Antica albeit acquired over ten years ago and linked via Appia Antica to the Villa dei Quintili which fronted via Appia Nuova. The farmhouse was renovated during the eighteen hundreds and complimented the medieval watchtower. We couldn't get around the building again as the place was under another reno while we were there. Nearby excavated ruins included a bathhouse with very degraded but still impressive mosaic floors depicting a gladiator with net and trident doing who knows what since the rest was missing and a few circus horses. A walk through the paddocks then led to the Villa dei Quintili, an ancient Roman villa which included an extensive thermal system fed by its own aqueduct as well as a hippodrome from the fourth century.

A long walk was then ahead as meandering from rock pile to ruin and ruin back to rock pile seemed to be the go. A quick look into the tanks or such halfway along what was once the northern portico and then onto the main complex. This was an extensive build, remnants still very high and expansive, easily accessed via well placed ramps and walkways. Signs and explanations of the workings of the joint alluded to the opulence that permeated through the place in its heyday.
The Villa was once a substantial complex, one that was one of the most lavish of the large Roman residences. Originally built by a couple of consuls of Greek origin, the complex was expanded upon once Emperor Commodus took over and made the villa imperial property. He liked the place so much that he had Sesto Quintilio Condiano and Sesto Quintilio Valerio Massimo murdered to make the deal possible. Villa dei Quintili consisted of main rooms, two large termes of the caldarium and the frigidarium. Large windows and marble everywhere. All overlooking the fields and Roman countryside.

It was time to return as the walk back would take time. All roads not only led to Rome but in this instance back past Appia Antica Caffe for more well deserved refreshments. A second beer pulled everyone up and it was then decided to take the apparent safe way back, down Via di Cecilia Matella and  through to the nearby country road which, by the way, was never found. There was so much traffic on Via Appia Pignatella that it was difficult to cross and quite dangerous. The road was narrow with plenty of cars, but it was the wrong road as access to the bush was back at the intersection where another couple on bikes were stopped and looking around. Riding past them, up and over the mound that obscured the correct route would have turned into a dirt track, passing more ruins, cisterns and mausoleums as well as plenty of sheep and onto Via della Caffarella for a safe if not inclined journey back. But there was no turning back and the busy Via Appia Pignatella was the quickest way back. Some prayers and hope that the passing traffic, many sounding their horns, would manage to keep a safe distance when passing. After a nervy ten to fifteen minute ride, Via Appia Antica reappeared and a few minutes later the bike shop also reappeared. After a chat to the lady and obtaining more handy advice, a few Euro for bike hire was handed over a ticket on the 118 back to the Coliseum was purchased. The bus stop was located just across from the shop and after twenty minutes the bus appeared. The walk back to the apartment was keenly avoided.

Back at, and not long after arriving in Trasevere, Jo and Cec found a nice little restaurant, Trattoria Da Teo, that was full of locals and wine only came by the litre. Pizza for Cec and gnocchi for Jo. After lunch they wandered on to Saint Cecilia Basilica but it was closed. They took plenty of photos and checked out the local area before cabbing it back to the apartment.
