Whenever you feel alone, just remember that those kings will always be there to guide you. And so will I.

Born to a turbulent family on a Mississippi farm, James Earl Jones passed away today. He was ninety-three years old. Abandoned by his parents as a child and raised by a racist grandmother (although he later reconciled with his actor father and performed alongside him as an adult), the trauma of his childhood developed into a stutter that followed him through his primary school years – sometimes, his stutter was so debilitating, he could not speak at all. In high school, Jones found in an English teacher someone who found in him a talent for written expression, and encouraged him to write and recite poetry in class. He overcame his stutter by graduation, although the effects of it carried over for the remainder of his life.

Jones' most accomplished roles may have been on the Broadway stage, where he won three Tonys (twice winning Best Actor in a Play for originating the lead roles in 1969's The Great White Hope by Howard Sackler and 1987's Fences by August Wilson) and was considered one of the best Shakespearean actors of his time.

But his contributions to cinema left an impact on audiences, too. Jones received an Honorary Academy Award alongside makeup artist Dick Smith (1972's The Godfather, 1984's Amadeus) in 2011. From the end of Hollywood's Golden Age to the dawn of the summer Hollywood blockbuster in the 1970s to the present, Jones' presence – and his basso profundo voice – could scarcely be ignored. Though he could not sing like Paul Robeson nor had the looks of Sidney Poitier, his presence and command put him in league of both of his acting predecessors.

USAF B-2 bomber demonstrates ability to neutralize low-cost maritime threats

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) stealth bomber B-2 Spirit recently demonstrated a low-cost, air-released method to neutralize surface vessels during a QUICKSINK test in the Gulf of Mexico, near Eglin Air Base, Florida.

This capability is a response to an urgent need to quickly neutralize maritime threats in large expanses of the ocean around the world, USAF said in an official statement. No other details have been provided.

The QUICKSINK test, conducted in partnership with the U.S. Navy, involved a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber delivering the new capability as part of the second RIMPAC SINKEX exercise in July. The demonstration marks a fundamental advance in the naval warfare capabilities of the U.S. Air Force, highlighting a collaboration between the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the U.S. Navy and industry partners.

"This technology ensures that the United States can defend its interests, maintain freedom of action and take the initiative in large maritime areas," said Colonel Matthew Caspers, Director of the AFRL Ammunition Board.

The AFRL Ammunition Board, based at Eglin Air Base, is involved in an ongoing Marine Weapons Program together with the U.S. Navy.

The tests take place amid the increase in Iran-backed Houthi attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea. The U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) reported that from December 2023 to mid-February 2024, container transport in the region decreased by 90%. Despite U.S. and European countermeasures, including Operation Prosperity Guardian and the European Union's ASPIDES mission, the Houthis carried out more than 43 attacks between November 19 and March 23, resulting in increased security costs and insurance premiums.

The apartment of Loretta is really cute.

Oh the date between Loretta and Oliver is really awkward.

So, Mabel is hoping that it was a date but would not have thought that Tobert would see it as one... I guess she would have liked to be talked to directly but would she had said yes?

Sazz is great... also who would hope that Charles would have been killed instead of Ben? Sure Charles is awkward but still...

Love how intense Howard is.

Charles did not manage to sneak in the interrogation. But I guess he sneaked in his phone...

It's cute how Loretta tries to take Mabel off of Dickie's scent.

And I love that Detective Williams goes to watch Charles to see him either freak out or succeed.

I also like the split-screen montage.

USAF's F-35 Lightning IIs still can't fly less than 40 km of lightning

Due to a compromised ability to make their fuel tanks inert, the F-35A Lightning IIs cannot fly less than 25 miles (40 km) from a storm or other atmospheric electrical activity. More than two years after the issuance of the flight restriction, the F-35 Joint Program Office was expected to suspend it. It didn't happen.

As you can imagine, the ban on flying near storms has implications for the training of the F-35, particularly in places such as Eglin Air Base, located in a region in Florida, where storms regularly arise.

Eglin is home to the 58th U.S. Air Force Fighter Squadron, which trains inexperienced F-35A pilots, about 60 of them a year. A storm 40 km from the base would presumably interrupt takeoffs and landings - and training. The same goes for lightning near nearby training camps.

To what extent is the restriction a problem for the USAF F-35 community? “The F-35 Joint Program Office does not comment on any impact on flight operations due to operational safety issues,” said JPO spokesman Chief Petty Officer Matthew Olay (USN).

The Program Office's policy of not commenting would not be an impediment to the ability of U.S. opponents to find out how much the lightning problem puts in the training of the F-35. They could simply review the weather data from the American and foreign F-35 bases and get a meter.

In addition, an intelligent opponent could - in a situation of low voltage and low threat - schedule tactical activities to coincide with bad weather in an area where the F-35As are expected to fly with their electronic information collection systems collecting data. This is just one example of the possible repercussions that the flight restriction imposes on the F-35A.

Interestingly, the restriction does not extend to the F-35Bs of the Marine Corps or the F-35Cs of the Navy, a point that the JPO clarified in an email this afternoon. Although the Program Office did not explain the reason for this, Navy/Marine aircraft apparently suffer the same problem as the F-35A to a lesser extent.

The problem is in the OBIGGS (Onboard Inert Gas Generation) system of the F-35, which pumps nitrogen-enriched air into its fuel tanks to inert them, preventing the aircraft from exploding if hit by lightning. Apparently, the pipes and connections inside the F-35 fuel tank (which provide the nitrogen mixture) stop working effectively over time due to vibrations and possibly temperature and pressure oscillations during flight.

In 2020, the maintainers of the Ogden Logistics Complex at Hill Air Base in Utah found damage to an OBIGGS system during the maintenance of the depot of an F-35A. The subsequent inspection found that 14 of the 24 F-35As examined contained damaged tubes. This led to a pause in the deliveries of the F-35 for two weeks, while determining whether the problem was in the defective production. This was not the case and deliveries were resumed, but the JPO issued the flight restriction.

Meanwhile, the Department of Defense and Lockheed reached an agreement on a correction for the OBIGGS system. Darren Sekiguchi, then vice president of production of Lockheed's F-35, told Defense News that the correction involved “the reinforcement of several supports associated with these tubes for OBIGGS”. The modification, which Lockheed and the U.S. Air Force began to make in 2021, would allow the pipes inside the fuel tank to be fixed more safely and avoid vibratory movement.

In February of this year, the Air Force Times reported that OBIGGS updates would allow the F-35As to fly near a lightning bolt without restrictions by mid-summer. However, such suspension of the restriction did not occur. And the JPO refused to explain why - despite the corrections - the ban on flying near a lightning bolt remains in force.

The Office's reluctance to explain is curious, even more so because Olay said that "the F-35B and C variants have some of the same OBIGGS problems as the F-35A, but were able to alleviate operational impacts".

It is worth remembering that in July 2021 the Marine Corps revealed that a pair of its F-35Bs were grounded in Japan with millions of dollars in damage after being struck by lightning during the missions earlier that month. How the Navy and the Marines are relieving the operational impacts (which implies that they exist) Olay did not explain. It is also not clear how - if at all - the OBIGGS differs in design and function in the B and C models of the F-35.

A clue may be on a Parker Aerospace blog (a Cleveland-based Parker-Hannifin business unit) that designed and built the OBIGGS system for the F-35. When discussing the development of the system, the blog reports that each variant of the F-35 "had different performance requirements that boosted different fuel system architectures and inertization. Parker was able to use common hardware among all three aircraft variants, although the system architectures were unique."

The fact that USAF's F-35As cannot operate near lightning may arise from their specific OBIGG architecture. However, you may also suggest another problem that may or may not be related to OBIGGS. The proximity lightning restrictions for the F-35As flown by US allies from Europe to Israel and Australia have not been made public, but logic suggests that their aircraft face the same problem, potentially hindering training on an international scale.

According to Breaking Defense, the JPO did not offer any specific plan or schedule to return the F-35As to full status for any weather. The Office only stated that "rear restrictions will be suspended when all safety issues are resolved or mitigated in an acceptable manner".

The JPO said that all F-35As (presumably US aircraft) will receive OBIGGS hardware upgrades by 2025. A software modification, which notifies a pilot when the OBIGGS system is degraded, began to be released in August 2022. Given the schedule of hardware updates, it seems that for a few more years, at least, the USAF Lightnings (light) will have to flee if there is a lightning bolt nearby.
