So, you’d like to listen to some Eighth Doctor stories from Big Finish, you’ve popped over to the website, looked at The Collected Eighth Doctor page, found there are (as of the end of May 2018) a mere 106 titles ranging over the past 17 years, and thought – where do I start? Luckily, we’ve got your back! We’ve also suggested different ways to listen, and pricing where available. How about Doctor(s) of your choosing with a companion who is super self-reliant b/c they don't ever want to be a burden on anyone else (if that's something you'd be interested in doing. If not, no worries at all.)

A/N: I have no trouble with doing this at all. I think since you're leaving the choice up to me, I'll choose 4, 8, & 9 as the Doctor's since all three have different ways of looking at it. :) I’ll write this in a headcanon format too since I’m choosing multiple Doctor’s. 

And I’ve already made myself cry at Nine. Enjoy!

The Doctor (4,8,9) with a self-reliant Companion...

Fourth Doctor:

He likes someone who can keep up with him and stay on their toes without needing much instruction or help. 

It’s even better if you know how to get yourself out of a sticky situation.

However, Four doesn’t mind helping out every now and then if it’s needed. 

If something is troubling you, he would want you to tell him instead of bottling it up in order to not be a burden to others. 

Four is very much an independent person and free-spirit, but he knows that sometimes it’s natural to lean on others and friends always have each other’s back. 

Eighth Doctor:

Eight would be a bit surprised, maybe even saddened by this because he loves it when others rely on him and he in turn, relies on them too. He’s a Doctor very much in tune with his emotions and craves emotional connection.

There is nothing wrong with relying on yourself. In fact, he encourages it, but he would start wondering if you trust him, and especially, if there is something more to this. 

If you keep insisting things are okay, he might actually come right out and tell you that you’re not a burden and he would never think of you as one. 

All he wants is for you to be vulnerable and open with him. Trust in him as he trusts in you. He didn’t pick up some random human. He choose you because you are you. 

Ninth Doctor:

Oh, Nine is such a complex person himself. With everything that happened in the Time War, he understands how you feel better than anyone else. 

He won’t push it, letting you go at your own pace and trusting you are more than qualified to take care of yourself. 

You both are pretty good at bottling things up though, which can be a terrible thing, but at least it gives you someone to relate with. Someone who can understand you.

Eventually though, you will both have to learn to lean on one another, share your feelings, and accept the fact you aren’t burdens for needing someone. You are both just people who have been through so much and you can’t make it through this alone.

i love that doctor who is really just a show, and actors who don't know anything about the fanbase are always like "oh yeah sure, I'd love to play the doctor," but the second they set foot in this fucking arena, millions of us just go rabid and start drawing fan art and making fan cams and fan fiction and putting them in other doctors' clothes. it's like, by embodying the idea of the doctor, you're immediately accepted and immortalized by a herd of internet gremlins, who now love you

Continuing the catch up from yesterday’s art marathon, here’s the Eighth Doctor as played by Paul McGann!

what’s that? another music analysis?!

lmao I had this afternoon off because I had a small procedure done, so when I got home from the doctor, I was finally able to work on this analysis that I’ve been sitting on for a few weeks 😅

anyway…this analysis is comparing two cues in season 6. the first is the “Motel Shoot Out” from 6x02: Carrot and Stick (x) and the second is “It Was Ignacio” from the 6x11: Breaking Bad teaser (x)

Dave Porter introduces the motif transcribed below in the 6x02 cue:

the tempo and the rhythm are quick, and the note are moving in a descending chromatic pattern before suddenly switching to move the opposite direction in an ascending chromatic pattern (chromatic movement in music is when a melodic line moves through every half step in the scale. for example: c, c#, d, d#, e, f, f#, etc. this is similar but slightly different from chromaticism for the music theory nerds out there. if you want any clarification feel free to dm me!)

this quick half-step motion heightens the tension and anxiety in the scene as Nacho is trying to escape from the motel as the cousins try to hunt him down. the intensity is dialed up even further as Porter transposes the motif up by half steps. the motif is originally introduced in e minor and then he quickly modulates to f minor and then f# minor:

in 6x11: Breaking Bad, Porter uses this motif again. this time the tempo and rhythm are a bit slower--he uses quarter notes instead of eighth notes--and he sticks with only using the descending chromatic movement. however, the intensity isn’t dialed down at all because of his use of the rapid rhythm in the percussion

another notable element in this cue is that the types of drums used in this cue (which I didn't transcribe here 😔) are similar to the ones use in the Breaking Bad theme, further blending the two timelines together!

the reason for the reprise of this motif is obvious—Nacho’s influence in the scene. in 6x02 the cousins are hunting down Nacho because they think he is responsible for Lalo’s death, and in 6x11 Saul thinks he’s been kidnapped by Lalo’s men and he yells out to Walt and Jesse, “It wasn’t me, it was Ignacio!”

this motif is short and easy to miss, but once you hear that it’s there it strengthens the merging of the bcs and brba timelines.
