I hate the awkwardness of trying to explain to people that, no, I didn’t grow up listening to Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran or whoever, I grew up with Van Halen and Bon Jovi and Jeff Healey and Steve Vai and Parliament and Bootsy Collins and Nirvana and Frank Zappa and Bjork and god knows how many other people no one my age has heard of.
#only recently have people my age have begun recognising nirvana and bon jovi#and it gets REAL awkward when they recognise nirvana and ask what my favourite song is.#tis a shame#q

A Massachusetts city received nearly 10 inches of rain in just 6 hours, causing severe flooding in homes and erosion of dams.
Heavy rainfall, nearly 10 inches in just six hours, caused severe flooding across parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, prompting two communities to declare states of emergency. The deluge inundated homes, necessitated boat rescues, and triggered additional evacuations due to concerns about a dam in poor condition.
Weather officials termed the rainfall a “200-year event,” highlighting its rarity and intensity.
Forecasts predict more rain on Wednesday, with Hurricane Lee expected to bring winds and further flooding to Rhode Island, eastern Massachusetts, southeastern New Hampshire, and central and coastal Maine over the weekend.
By Tuesday morning, up to 300 people had been evacuated from Leominster, located about 40 miles northwest of Boston. The evacuations included residents from a high-rise apartment building and a nursing home. All schools were closed, and two shelters were established to assist those affected.
Mazzarella noted that the city has not experienced such extensive damage since a hurricane in 1936. He reported that most buildings downtown were flooded, with some even collapsing, and rail service into Boston was disrupted.
“The storm stalled over us last night and didn’t move for nearly five hours, dumping 11 inches (28 centimeters) of rain,” Mazzarella said during a Tuesday morning news conference. He added that Leominster's 12 hills contributed to the flooding, as water flowed down from them. Climate and Average Weather Year Round in 14211 - Buffalo NY:
On Monday night, Mazzarella advised people to “find a high spot somewhere” in a recording posted online. He mentioned that any injuries reported were minor.
Leominster’s director of emergency management, Arthur Elbthal, reported that while two out of the city’s 24 dams sustained damage, they remained intact. The city is currently working on reinforcing them.
Matthew Belk, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boston, stated that a trained spotter near Leominster recorded 9.5 inches (24 centimeters) of rain. Belk described the rainfall as a “200-year event,” indicating the likelihood of such an event occurring in any given year is one in 200. He also noted that the record for the highest single-day rainfall in Massachusetts was set on August 18, 1955, when Tropical Storm Diane brought just over 18 inches (45 centimeters) of rain to Westfield.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey said she’s closely monitoring forecasts for heavy rains on Wednesday and the potential impact of Hurricane Lee on the state as she assessed damage in North Attleborough, roughly 55 miles (88.5 kilometers) south of Leominster.
“It was really frightening to see how much water fell in such a short period and the severe damage it caused,” Healey said. She has contacted the Biden administration, the congressional delegation, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for support.
Steve Forcier, 62, recounted being half asleep in his mobile home when firefighters knocked on his door late Monday.
“It was a bit intimidating and frightening,” Forcier said Tuesday morning outside the school where he and others had taken shelter for the night. “When I looked outside, I thought, ‘Holy crap!’”
Forcier noted that the water outside reached about waist-high, but his home sustained minimal damage by the time he evacuated. Firefighters used inflatable rafts to rescue residents from the mobile home park.
In North Attleborough, Nathan Bonneau's home was condemned on Tuesday after a building inspector evaluated the flood damage. He reported that the water level nearly reached his height of 5’10” (178 centimeters).
“It just kept getting worse,” he said. “I watched the water rise from trickling into my garage to flooding through my front door in just 35 minutes.”

Outside a shelter where at least 80 people spent the night, Leominster Schools Superintendent Paula Deacon described it as “a very emotional roller coaster” for many residents.
“They don’t know the condition of their homes, and many left with nothing,” she said.
Early Tuesday, the city advised residents in areas near a brook and the North Nashua River in Leominster to “immediately evacuate” as a precaution due to concerns about the Barrett Park Pond Dam.
The dam, a 15-foot-tall (4.5-meter) earthen structure, is listed in poor condition and poses a significant hazard, with its failure potentially causing economic damage but not expected to result in loss of life, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ National Inventory of Dams. The database indicates the dam was last inspected in November 2017, although inspections are supposed to occur every five years.
In 2021, the city received a $163,500 grant from the state to cover engineering and permitting costs for repairs and improvements to the dam.
On Tuesday, Mazzarella reported that several homes in Leominster had been severely affected, with water washing away around them and exposing foundations about 8 feet (2.4 meters) below ground, along with underground pipes.
youtube
City planning documents indicate that low-lying areas of Leominster are especially prone to periodic flooding. The North Nashua River has seen significant high flows in March 1936, September 1938, and August 1955.
“During these floods, streets were submerged, dams were overtopped, and bridges collapsed,” the plan noted.
Other communities also faced flooding on Monday night. In North Attleborough, crews worked to clear water from roads, and about 200 homes sustained flood damage. Roads in Rhode Island and Nashua, New Hampshire, were similarly affected.
In Providence, Rhode Island, heavy rain flooded a parking lot and parts of a shopping mall on Branch Avenue. Firefighters used inflatable boats to rescue over two dozen people stranded in their cars.
Both Leominster and North Attleborough declared states of emergency.
Storms were expected on Wednesday afternoon and evening, with some potentially bringing heavy rain, according to the National Weather Service.
New England has faced significant flooding this summer, including a July storm in Vermont that delivered up to two months' worth of rain in just two days, resulting in two deaths.

Atmospheric scientists attribute these floods to climate change. Matthew Barlow, a climate scientist at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, explained that increased heat and humidity in the region have led to higher moisture levels in the air. Warmer air holds more water, a phenomenon linked to climate change.
“As long as fossil fuel emissions continue, this will worsen,” Barlow said. “This isn’t the new normal; it’s a step toward even more intense weather events unless we significantly reduce emissions.”

Keir Starmer Authorizes Use of British Missiles for Strikes Inside Russia
The announcement was made during a meeting between the new British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the NATO summit in Washington, DC, on Wednesday. The decision to authorize the use of Storm Shadow missiles, welcomed by Ukraine, marks a hawkish shift from the previous Conservative government's policy. John Healey, the new Defence Secretary, signaled the move but declined to discuss "operational arrangements." He told Sky News that Britain would do everything possible to support Ukraine in repelling Putin's invasion. In Washington, Mr. Healey stated, "We provide weapons and equipment where we can to help them defend themselves. As with any nation in conflict, we require that war is conducted according to the rules of the Geneva Convention, as mandated by international law." https://twitter.com/ZelenskyyUa/status/1811099652625773036?s=08 However, Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, responded to the news by stating, "If this is so then, of course, this is another absolutely irresponsible step towards escalating tensions and seriously escalating the situation." He told Reuters, "We will be watching this very thoroughly and respond accordingly." The significant announcement was a key aspect of a NATO summit with multiple distinct focuses. The summit, which brought together leaders from the 32-member states, concludes on Thursday and marks the 75th anniversary of the defense alliance. In a lengthy declaration, the alliance's members announced that Ukraine is on an "irreversible" path to NATO membership. This wording is important to the Ukrainian government but is likely to agitate Moscow. "We fully support Ukraine's right to choose its own security arrangements and decide its own future, free from outside interference. Ukraine's future is in NATO," the declaration stated. It continued: "As Ukraine continues this vital work, we will continue to support it on its irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership. We reaffirm that we will be in a position to extend an invitation to Ukraine to join the alliance when allies agree and conditions are met." Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized that the UK should be "the leading European nation in NATO" and must take a leading role in supporting Ukraine. In a rare signal of political continuity regarding the supply of weapons to Ukraine, he said: "The Sunak pledge comes with the Starmer guarantee of delivery." When asked about the prospect of a second Donald Trump presidency, Defence Secretary John Healey made cautiously measured remarks, suggesting that more "heavy lifting" could be required. "Whoever is elected to the White House, we must acknowledge that American priorities are likely to increasingly focus on the Indo-Pacific region and other parts of the globe," he stated. "As a consequence, European nations within NATO must take on more responsibility and leadership roles that we traditionally relied on the Americans to fulfill." Behind closed doors, European diplomats based in Washington express more candid views, suggesting that NATO's current gradual rebalancing of power could potentially shift dramatically away from US dominance if Donald Trump were to secure a second term. The NATO summit has been overshadowed by concerns surrounding President Biden's agility and perceived cognitive decline. Calls from his friend and megadonor George Clooney for Biden to step aside as a candidate have added significant pressure. Today, Senate Democrats will have a lunch meeting with key Biden advisers Mike Donilon and Steve Ricchetti, along with Biden-Harris campaign chair Jen O'Malley Dillon. Hours before the president's rare news conference to conclude the NATO summit, anticipation builds as it represents a significant opportunity for him to demonstrate his capability once more. During his meeting with Prime Minister Starmer in the Oval Office, the president appeared tired but managed to navigate the meeting without any notable slip-ups. This encounter marked the midpoint of Sir Keir's successful visit to Washington, described by UK diplomatic sources as highly successful. The timing was fortuitous for the three top ministers of the new British administration to meet many of their counterparts in one location during the first week of their government. Sir Keir, along with Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Defence Secretary John Healey, frequently appeared together as a trio. They visited Capitol Hill, where they engaged with leaders from both sides of the political spectrum. Read the full article

[ad_1] Parts of the Northeast were bracing for a powerful winter storm that could dump heavy, wet snow and unleash strong winds, making travel difficult and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of people. The National Weather Service says the storm could begin late Monday and last into Wednesday. Areas in its path could include parts of New England, upstate New York, northeastern Pennsylvania, and northern New Jersey, with snowfall totals expected to range from a few inches to a few feet, depending on the area. "This could be deadly," New York Gov. Kathy Hochul warned at a storm briefing in Albany. "Let me repeat: This will be a dangerous storm. Please stay off the roads for your own safety." Higher elevations in New York's mid-Hudson region and the Albany area could receive 3 feet of snow. Hochul, who will issue a state of emergency starting at 8 p.m. Monday, said snow plow crews from Long Island and utility crews as far away as Canada were being sent to the region. She also said 100 National Guard members were brought in to assist with emergency response. Snow in the western part of Massachusetts could exceed 18 inches, but along the coast, the totals could be 3 or 4 inches, Bill Simpson, a spokesman for the National Weather Service in Norton, Massachusetts, said. "I'm not quite sure of the exact track," Simpson said. "That makes all the difference in the world." A winter storm warning was due to take effect Monday evening and last through Wednesday morning for parts of upstate New York, northeastern Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey, southern sections of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont as well as western Massachusetts and parts of Connecticut and Rhode Island. Some schools in the region canceled classes for Tuesday ahead of the storm, and Maine Gov. Janet Mills directed that all state offices be closed Tuesday. Connecticut's largest electricity provider, Eversource, was bringing in extra crews from other states as it prepared for up to 130,000 power outages. "That combination of heavy wet snow, long duration of sustained winds, long duration of gusts will almost certainly bring down tree limbs and entire trees," said Steve Sullivan, president of Connecticut electric operations for Eversource. "Those will damage the electric system." The storm will arrive during elections in New Hampshire In New Hampshire, the storm will hit on Election Day for town officeholders. Dozens of communities postponed voting, while others reminded voters that they could vote by absentee ballot on Monday instead. Similar back-to-back Election Day storms in 2017 and 2018 sparked widespread confusion about who could reschedule elections. Lawmakers have since changed the law to allow town moderators to postpone elections if the National Weather Service issues a storm warning. For Tuesday, such warnings have been issued for at least parts of seven of the state's 10 counties. In Massachusetts, Gov. Maura Healey directed all non-emergency state employees working in executive branch agencies not to report to their workplaces Tuesday, and instead work from home if possible. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority suspended all ferry service Tuesday. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said city officials were keeping a close eye on the storm, which was expected to start out as mostly rain Tuesday along the eastern coast of Massachusetts. "The weather forecasts are still shifting around quite a bit," Wu said. "Our public works and emergency management and Boston Public Schools teams are really focused on tracking this minute by minute." Wu said the city has been in touch with companies that might be running cranes or large construction sites make sure they secure materials ahead of predicted strong winds.
