you must have this many dead friends to ride
it's TDOR (well, it was). unable to sleep, i read through all the deaths reported in the 2022-23 trans murder report (a year out of date, I don't think they've released this year's one yet.)
I'm not quite sure why i felt i should do this. if it's a gesture for the victims... well, if someone murders me one day, i don't think it will mean much one way or another if someone in faraway country reads a brief two sentence report that a 30-35 year old trans woman with 'other' occupation was found tied up with burn marks or something. nevertheless, it is the time of year for this ritual.
most of the deaths are reported in central and south american countries, largely due to reporting bias, though there's more reporting now from countries like India and Pakistan - almost nothing from east asia though, probably due to language barriers. it's hard to draw much of a conclusion about anything since many of the reports don't say much, the stats are subject to extreme sampling bias, etc etc. but the general types of story are: "her partner murdered her", "she was killed by gunmen on the street/in her house", "there was an argument and the other person decided to kill her over it", "the mob killed her for extortion reasons", 'her body was found in some awful condition", "the cops killed her" (including Tortugita, who they shot 57 times at the 'cop city' protest), and of course good old "explicitly anti trans hate crime" (which covers Brianna Ghey, the one death from my country, and several from the US).
my murdered sisters are in most cases very young. younger than me.
the statistician in my brain wants me to acknowledge that i don't know the degree that trans women are specifically subject to murder for being trans women or by abusive partners etc, and how much it's "just" about being poor and racialised and living in a place where paramilitaries, gangs etc routinely murder people. sex work is a dangerous line of work for many reasons, but it's also going to be the case that a lot of us are sex workers so even if we were all equally likely to be murdered, a huge number of the dead would be sex workers, just as many of them were beauticians.
but honestly, even bearing that in mind, a whole lot of sex workers were killed.
there is something particularly ghoulish in talking so drily about death statistics; the website uses the painful phrase 'concerning trend' in regards to the demographics of people killed (overwhelmingly trans women, sex workers and not white), as if a perfectly proportional series of murders would be less 'concerning' somehow, but what exactly are you supposed to say? it is of course a window into who a society is comfortable getting rid of, but we already knew that. there's a reason that a sex worker is the go-to plot-inciting murder victim in fiction.
collating death reports like this... in part it is done as a matter of political advocacy, saying 'look, we are being murdered by the hundreds [multiplied by some nebulous but significant underreporting factor]'. but of course, if that's our goal, we are holding our deaths up against, for example, the tens of, likely hundreds of thousands of people killed by violence in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine in the last year - events which have already divided the world into people who can't stop it, and people who can but don't care to. and what do we want done about it? to beg the state to come down and apply its monopoly on violence more stringently? often the police are the ones killing trans women.
so what remains is ritual. we light candles, and read out the names of strangers who nevertheless have this one important thing in common with us, the ~global community~ of trannies and such - this was a person who refused to take the awful role they were given, asserted their own will to change their body, managed to live a life at least partly on their own terms, and then got killed over it.
but we don't have time to tell the life story, no time to describe the mess of relationships and aspirations that drive a life; there is no time to imagine what feelings we shared, what they enjoyed, what stories we might have laughed about if we'd known each other...
we have time for 'found dead in a car'.
if that.
in my country, we face a very different threat distribution - i don't really expect anyone i know to get murdered (though it's not impossible, there are people I'm close to who have been viciously attacked and there was little to do to stop the attacker coming back), but I'm sure Fall won't be the last of my friends to die by suicide. if we are 'fighting like hell for the living', our project here is more about trying to build lives that are worth living for, and weathering whatever fashy deluge is coming down the political pipes. what does fighting like hell even mean here? i think i used to think i knew.
but this night at least, I'm remembering my friend Fall, who we lost back in 2022. I made this page about her, and the feelings that came up from her death, with writing from friends who knew her better than me. I'd be grateful if you read it and helped some part of her memory live on. (apparently they wrote a little memorial for her in the recent translation of ShÅnen Note: Boy Soprano which she worked on.)
I never got to ask what Fall thought of all these TDoR rituals - it's one of many things I didn't get to talk to her about and I bet she'd give me something unexpected to think about, formed some ingenious connection. or maybe she didn't think much of it! but it's as good a reason to think of her as any. she was awesome, she should have been given a much better hand by this world, and it is more shit for not having her in it.
I bet the friends of any of the 321 people on that list, and everyone on this year's list, would be able to say something pretty similar.
entropy always gets its way. but I'll hold onto what I can of her, my fragment of her ghost, for as long as we can. i guess that's the point of the ritual. hold onto our ghosts. tell each other that, one day, they'll stop accumulating so fast.

Iām on a Star Wars books roll so here we go with my ā unhinged thanks for asking! ā thoughts on Dooku: Jedi Lost, specifically the audio play. Short version: I fucking loved this one! For maximum emotional devastation, pair with Master and Apprentice and Padawan the way my stupid ass did and then be sad about it forever I guess that's what Iām going to have to do.
Ā Long (LONG oopsie) version:
- So. First of all, letās get the most important thing out of the way on this here old man yaoi website. We all agree dooku and sifo dyas explored each otherās bodies right. Or at least definitely would have if not for the laws of this order etc., potentially. Thatās not just me. Good. Thank you. We can now move onĀ
- Secondly. Well. Guess Iām just going to be inconsolable about Sifo-Dyas forever now. I miss the days in which he was just a throwaway line in AotC spawned by a random misspelling to me, rather than an eternal raw aching wound in my heart
- poor poor ventress just reading through all the proof that dooku absolutely does have it in him to be a good dad I mean master and just ā idk got tired of that and went the force lightning route with her. I love the move of having her dead master hang out with her all that time as well (having her slip up and refer to āusā did something to me, god this is so sad. Is he actually there in spirit or is it just her grief dreaming him up because dooku is awful and cold as a cliffĀ wall and she needs some kind of attachment figure even if sheāll have to reinvent him herself, rebuild him word for word, gesture by gesture. Pain. sorry about your terrible track record with father figures asajj)Ā
- Lene: (About Averross): He hasnāt changed.Ā
Dooku: (In the warmest fondest voice you ever heard) And I hope he never does
WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH MYSELF? MUST I SET MYSELF ON FIRE TO ESCAPE THE PAIN???
Another strong showing for Rael in general, btw. Heās so warm and charming as a presence even though heās also a little chaos gremlin. (Heās quite similar to how Sifo-Dyas was when he was young in some ways, I can definitely start to see what Dooku responds warmly to in terms of character traits.)Ā
- the fact that good olā sheev showed an interest in rael, dooku and anakinā¦ interesting huh! Heās just got a soft spot for the disaster lineage I suppose, maybe thereās an element there of luring yodaās most direct lineage into the dirt with him without yoda even noticing for the longest time. Also cackling at the idea that he looked at qui-gon ātoo fucking stubborn and insufferable to fall to the dark side out of sheer spiteā jinn and went ā...not that one thoā fhdskjfa. And obi-wan is more like āthat one blorbo all my little guys seem wild about but I just donāt get it guysāĀ
IF raelās refusal to join dooku at the end of āmaster and apprenticeā is the last word (which I am not convinced of ;___; be safe cowboy jedi we never see in mainline canon so far), then heās the only one who has dodged palpatineās attentions. Wonderful if true love that for him
ALSO rael is one of the few people we know to be on (or at least to consider himself on despite what palps might think lol) first name basis with palpatine. Hilarious. I concur with dooku never change raelĀ
- Sifo-Dyas: Thatās insane.Ā
Dooku, deadpan: Yes.
Sifo-Dyas: The worst plan Iāve ever heard.
Dooku, somehow even more deadpan: Most probably.Ā
Sifo-Dyas: Iām in.Ā
Cryingā¦ weeping and dyingā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ what if someone could have helped sifo with his unfortunate prophecy propensity and they hadnāt drifted apart. Clone Wars averted methinks if dooku still ended up leaving the order he would have been too busy having tender gay sex with the love of his life (and only person who can call him out on his shit and have him actually listen) to be a war criminal (I am being extremely facetious of course this is very much a ātime traveler killing baby hitlerā situation where the underlying forces causing this point in history are way too powerful to avert the catastrophe in one move. but at least palps would probably have had to pick someone else to wreck the galaxy through and sifo-dyas would be kissed & held instead of going slowly mad. A net plus some (I, me) would say)Ā
- I just wanted to applaud both the writing and the voice acting for the characterization of Dooku in this, from his young self trying so hard to be haughty and self-possessed but also being like, yāknow, twelve and a dweeb and easy for Sifo-Dyas to pull into trouble, to the dry wit and warmth he shows with Rael and Qui-Gon or his sister later. It took me a little while to get into the voice acting specifically (the actor makes no attempt at going the full Christopher Lee, which in hindsight was probably wise), but now I love it. It gets a bit goofy in places but you know what, I am a long time lover of audio plays, thatās part of the charmĀ
- āMaster, have I done something wrong?ā
My heart is clenchingā¦ do you thinkā¦ that master yodaās deal with leaving his student to try fucking everything to have some kind of relationship with him until he just breaks down in tears of despairā¦ is the kind of thing that maybe started a little bit of a generational trauma cartwheel through the ages. The point that bb!dooku is arrogant isnāt without merit and he strikes out incredibly ungracefully about it (in fact I would be a lot more worried than yoda seems to be that he decides to try to kill a tree about it, āI felt like destroying something beautifulā-style)Ā but I just donāt think aā¦ fourteen year old? A teen anyway, Is going to learn what you think he learns from this. I simply donāt believe that silent treatmenting kids will teach them emotional intelligence I guess especially if they already struggle with that naturally lolĀ
(It is exactly the same mistake (in my opinion) that Qui-Gon makes with Obi-Wan, too, just leaving the kid completely alone and forcing them to come to you every which way for comfort or guidance instead of meeting them or reaching out to them. Especially once you see that really Dookuās prime emotion/big core wound right from the beginning is loneliness. And that doesnāt only come from a feeling of superiority (which to be sure is also a big factor), because he has no idea where he comes from until he meets his sister. I donāt think the jedi as a whole were unsalvageable by any stretch of the imagination, but Yoda specificallyā¦ you are on such very thin ice with me at this point you little green fuck. Youāre very funny and moving in yoda dark rendezvous and thatās all thatās keeping you in my somewhat good graces.)
- Okay, coming back a bit later I think Iāve found the right words to say this. more precisely dooku has two big issues which you can later see haunting all the way down his lineage ā loneliness and control. (and not incidentally the intersecting elements of the two haha.) We see from his relationship to sifo-dyas that heās not incapable of having close mutual relationships with an equal, but that kind of crashed and burned for reasons neither of them could really help and after that it seems quite telling that he has the easiest time with deeper connection in a teacher-student sort of form. I think his affection is unconditional and real, but you canāt get away from the fact that he also has the most control in that relationship structure by default, he gets to dictate what form it takes to a big extent. He doesnāt trust other people ā the underlying idea āOnly I can do thisā that eventually leads him down the Separatist path is there the whole way. It speaks both to a sense of superiority and an utter lack of faith that other people can or will help him. And then that echoes down through the master-padawan line:Ā
Qui-Gon with his self-righteousness and utter refusal to compromise leaving him isolated among the jedi (only he is right. Yeah the Force told him so. Donāt worry Iāve got a permit *insert parks and rec I can do whatever I want meme here*), Obi-Wan with his anxiety and perfectionism and incredible sense of shame and responsibility that he should be able to carry the whole world on his shoulders alone and beating himself up for failing, all feeding into not knowing what to do with Anakin and his complete lack of control of himself and his desperation to gain and maintain connection and love (which earns him the title of āDookuās least favorite family memberā fhdsa his immediate disdain for him is so funny and so in character. Repress and go slowly mad like a normal person anakin the way youāre carrying on is just undignified and that is much worse than being evil)ā¦Ā
- Rael gently telling Dooku to take on another padawan soonā¦ so sweet, so sad, local cowboy jedi looking out for his dad. Also highlights something about Dooku I think is true: that he does much better and seems to have an easier time holding to the light when heās responsible for someone else. Again, I do feel like Dookuās core problem is loneliness, but it seems like raising kids is the one point where that relaxes somewhat. Maybe if Sifo-Dyas had stayed in a better mental place and they kept in touch it could have been different.
- Lene Kostana is SUCH a character! Charismatic and deeply fucked up, when itās revealed how her and Sifo-Dyasā relationship remains long after his padawan stage is done I felt a little bit sick, to my surprise. Because that could just be kindness on her part, of course, itās good that he has someone he trusts to look after him when he canāt himself, but also thereās somethingā¦ queasy about the way it keeps him continually young, in a way. (Notably he still calls her āmasterā even as an adult, when theyāre working together. Not uncommon in Star Wars, of course, but together with everything else going on vibes-wiseā¦ hm.) The inherent unreliable narration of this story really worked for me in this regard especially ā do we know that young Dooku was entirely wrong when he sensed the dark side in her? She certainly is willing to go to lengths that areā¦ worrying! in her fascination with sith shit, she tempted children into a dangerous place they didnāt understand and couldnāt know the consequences of and she continually puts sifo-dyas in situations that are implied to be a risk to worsening his condition. Run of the mill incredibly irresponsible at best, sincerely sinister at worst. Did she choose Sifo over Dooku because heās more vulnerable and shapeable? There is an undercurrent of something icky and emotionally incest-y going on with how she relates to Dooku and Sifo-Dyas in general (right down to the āNO, no one can know about thisā intensity after theā¦ evil moss cave. I canāt believe Iām this emotional about a book with an evil moss cave). I donāt think sheās a proper sith in any way and I also believe there is real affection there on all sides, but idk something about the whole thing makes me deeply uneasy. Yoda where the fuck are you your son is out there with his irresponsible mom again theyāre looking for dirty needles in haystacks and theyāre not even wearing any gloves
- dooku telling sifo-dyas he can come back to haunt him if he likes as a jokeā¦ well well well Iām sure that doesnāt ring with some dramatic irony at some point down the line lmao
- honestly looking back at master and apprentice after reading jedi lost makes qui-gon's apparent lack of reaction to dooku leaving seem ā let's call it highly suspect haha. rael asks him if he's spoken to dooku after and qui-gon is like 'no. why would I. it's literally fine. anyway this topic is done now'. (and rael seems to just go ā*older brotherly knowing* uh-huhā) meanwhile he's thinking about dooku *all the time* trying to figure out his role as master to obi-wan, thinking about being a padawan himself, the parts of his life he shared with both dooku and rael. The jedi doth protest too much methinksĀ Ā
ALSO how much of qui-gon thinking the council was too lenient with rael after he had to kill his padawan is about that actual situation, and how much is a āour family still likes my older brother more than me even though he Fucked Up so bad and breaks just as many rules as I doā sort of deal mixed with his own neuroses about how heās failing obi-wan (to which raelās situation symbolizes the worst possible outcome, i.e. the kid dies and itās basically your fault). Many thoughts.Ā
- moment of silence for jenza of house serenno. Girl your only sin was being surrounded by asshole male family members and Iām so sorry I think you did all you could with what you had to work with here.
Notā¦ entirely sure how dookuās claim to the title supersedes hers ā is he a year older than her? (sheās eleven when they first meet, he might be twelve or older at that point I donāt remember haha) Does she just give up her place in the inheritance order? Are primogeniture and male heir preference factors in Serenno inheritance law? Not the most important thing honestly it works anyway thematically but could have been clarified quickly!
- interesting to see that the councilās restrictive policy against engaging with prophecies had a surprisingly big impact on how things went down. Kostana has a lot of responsibility in Sifoās fate for insisting he keep it secret, but there is genuine fear for what might become of him if the rest of the order finds out heās got 24/7 futurevision hovering over him threateninglyā¦ listen itās not like the poor guy can help getting the future constantly pumped into his brain at nightmare resolutions, I think maybe if there had been more willingness to at least engage curiously with the concept of prophecy and how it works, even if you donāt put your faith in the particulars of what the prophecies say, this wouldnāt have had to be such a shitty isolated secretive life for him. hearing him slowly fall apart over the years considering how bright and lovely he started out... oof is all I can sayĀ
- when dooku was a good jedi he was such a good jedi!!! The scene where theyāre saving the kids from the collapsing hospital, every time he teaches his students anythingā¦the impulse of someone has to do something about this! that made him so good at saving lives turning dark with the tarnish of frustration and rage over the yearsā¦ nooooooooo problematic grandpa why did it have to be like this :(
- ā¦do you think infant jedi can sense whatās going on around them in the Force. Because it makes a very sad kind of sense if dooku on some level remembers bodily or in the Force that he was not only abandoned but rejected in disgust as one of the first things he discovered in the world. Oh boy. With all the ways attachment relationships can go wonky in the first few years in real life I donāt even want to consider how much more wrong it can go when the baby is fucking psychic lol
- vaguely related: the way dooku seems to find the very idea of being truly reliant on anyone, emotionally or otherwise, personally offensive, terrifying and humiliating lol. Yoda saves him from being crushed by rubble and he is outraged because that means he canāt save himself (and his newfound sister) without anyoneās help like he thought for one glorious moment he could. The fantasy of perfect emotional self-sufficiency, doing away with all the messiness and risk of interpersonal relationships and cutting off the possibility of really being abandoned again. Itāll get ya every time. This is also a thing you see reflected in his lineage ā theyāre all quite inward-turning that way until you get to anakin, to different extents and with varying presentations but it is there I think. Qui-Gon turns to the Force, Obi-Wan to perfectionism and shame and rumination, Rael to the bottle and depression and hedonistic apathy, but they all struggle hugely with letting anyone in to help them. Dookuās line are all much more comfortable being the helpers rather than the helpees, as it were.Ā Ā
- āThank you for everything, Lene. Tell Rael and Qui-Gon ā tell themā¦ tell them the Force will be with them, alwaysā
Emotional terrorism against me specifically and personally. You asshole you just excused yourself from the non-attachment rules thereās literally nothing in the world except you to stop you from reaching out and telling your children you love them yOURSELF why are you like this
- the recurring theme of dooku seeing something beautiful (the tree in the temple, the tirraātaka as a child and an adult) and ending up lashing out to destroy itā¦ but the tree was old and mighty and he was young and new and couldnāt truly harm it, so he was saved from his own impulsivity. And then when he sees the tirraātaka as an adult he loves it immediately. And in the end he still mangles and destroys it. He didnāt mean to, but he did. He woke it up and hurt it just by existing as a child and then he had to kill it as a mercy because he was too powerful at that point for anything to buffer his mistakes. The parallel with the bird he loved that he also couldnāt protect. He starts out with an aching loneliness somewhere at the core of him through no real fault of his own but by the end it is entirely his own fault that itās worse, because he starts wrecking everything he loves in an almost absent-minded but definitely intentional way, like itās a nightmare heās listening to through the door as it happens in the next room over. He really IS the āI just felt like destroying something beautifulā central of the jedi.
at the end qui-gon is dead and through dookuās own influence, however indirectly. Rael has had to turn away from him. Sifo-Dyas is dead on Dookuās own orders and so is his sister, he might as well have done it with his own hands. (though I think itās very interesting that in each case he didnāt do it with his own hands, he consistently uses a middleman.) He lives within the coldness of his sterile empty castle and horrifically mistreats the one person he might have found something like connection with the way he did with his students before (Ventress), deliberately trapping her in a similar state of utter desolate isolation and telling her, essentially, āWeāre like this as people and nothing can be done to change it. We canāt escape, weāre already doomed, stop trying, itās too late. You are just like me (and if you aren't already I'll make you like me)ā. And thatās the closest thing he gets to love anymore. When he accused Ky of using her āas a salve for his own lonelinessā and youāre like well well well mr projection man howās that working out for you. He is completely, shatteringly alone and he is so entirely as a consequence of his own actions and he's too far gone to understand or care. Iām howling you useless fucking FOOL dookuĀ Ā
- dooku š¤ john gaius
āHm. I have observed that there are in fact many flaws in our society and the government is deeply corrupt. So if I kill a few billion people here and there in order to fix it, is that not basically okay when you really think about itāĀ
Dooku making salient points about the political and ethical failures of the Republic and then, just when you think heās onto something, he goes and makes The wildest fucking decisions about what to do about it. Sure. dark magic and genocide are probably the only ways out of this youāre so right bro. If we make enough minuses to add together surely weāll end up in plus sooner or later
- *head in my hands once more* I canāt believe I am genuinely emotionally invested in someone called Count Dooku with the looks of a knockoff dracula and ultimate moral character to match right now this is terrible. hey. hey dooks. what you have to go and fuck everything up so bad for huh Iām so incredibly sad now
there is something to be said about how getting to see glimpses of what dooku looked like in the light makes it so much more heartwrenching that he never came back. he could have, a thousand times. and every time he chose not to.
#star wars#dooku jedi lost#count dooku#sifo dyas#dooku x sifo dyas#disaster lineage#lene kostana#star wars meta#rael averross#qui gon jinn#I'm being peak on my bullshit in this one. you're welcome and/or I'm sorry as appropriate

hi!! i saw your other post about how you simplify details and it was really helpful - was wondering if you had any tips abt drawing expressions/poses to express a story/emotions. like i saw your recent sumeru char doodles on twt and the way you draw alhaitham and hungover kaveh is so!!! ahh!! all of the lines feel really intentional, from the expressions to the fabric of the clothing and omg i love it so much. anyways sorry for rambling HAHA thank you sm for sharing your art! gl w art school šŖ
Hello!
Thank you so much for the lovely words <3 it's really such a honor to hear that so many people consider my art to be very expressive, which I think is an essential skill to have for storytelling in comics!
First of all, I'd like to say this isn't something I can easily answer... you must already know there's no easy step-by-step guide on how to be "good" at art or expressions or whichever aspect you're trying to improve, the answer will always be observation and practice. However, I can tell you some of my methods I use to make sure emotions are conveyed as efficiently as possible(?). Here are the key points I always try to apply (note that these aren't rules, these are just my guiding points):
Understanding the character(s), the context, and how the two work together
Laying down a foundation
Not letting dialogue be the main driving force behind storytelling
Paneling conveys emotion too, actually
The absence of something can also convey emotion
You didn't specifically ask about comics, but since it's my favorite subject and it ties into your question, I'll be using a lot of examples from the comics I made! And it might interest other people who were curious?
VERY long post ahead :)
1. Understanding the character(s), the context, and how the two work together
This is what I think is the most fundamental part of storytelling! I mean, makes sense, right? Obviously you don't need a PhD in The Character to make stories based off them. I literally cannot tell you every detail about my favorite characters despite loving them very much, but I think understanding them and their relationships on a big-picture level is primordial. What drives them, what are their principles, what are their biggest fears, who do they make exceptions for, etc. Also, to me, understanding their relationships is sometimes more important than understanding the character at a molecular level. We can tell so much about someone just from the way they interact with specific people vs how they interact with strangers. The person I am online isn't the same I am with friends nor even with family-- like one of the reasons some characters can feel one-dimensional is because they don't show variation in their character throughout their relationships (and since you mentioned Kaveh and Alhaitham, I don't need to tell you the way both of them interact with each other is far removed from the way they interact with friends, strangers, etc... I think a lot of people forget who they are outside of their relationship, which a huge point of contention behind mischaracterization in fan works). I don't have much to say about this other than this is something I keep in mind every step of the way through.
2. Laying down a foundation
This is what the majority of my comics look like on second draft:
I said second because the first drafts usually look like this, which are barely comprehensible to anyone but myself:
The purpose of these are not only to give me a better guide for posing than whatever i did on the first draft (storyboard), but also have a first pass at motion and emotion. The expressions and gestures are legible enough that you can probably glean the emotions of each character based off the little sketches. Ultimately, some of the things I'll draft will end up adjusted, changed, expanded on or even removed.
This particular panel of Reigen is a favorite of mine, because the first pass already shows his confusion, but the final one is even more distorted because it felt like it needed to be even more accentuated.
This panel where he mansplains is also a good example, because the first pass gave him too much of an arrogant/uninterested look (notable with his upturned face), whereas Reigen is more likely to take pride in explaining something he knows to make himself look like a wise and mature figure (notable with his slight smirk and downturned face, as if nodding to himself; the hand is also slightly more forward as if inviting rather than dismissing). And since I basically made an example of it above: body language is super important! This applies for everyone. It doesn't stop at characters who make grand gestures and exaggerated poses every waking moment of their life, but also characters who are socially awkward, private, reclusive...
The posing here is intentionally stiff but not entirely closed off, giving the sense that he's earnest, tries his best to make connections , but also doesn't want to take too much space, thinking the smallest wrong move could cause trouble. Also, give room for the body to do its thing. Avoid cropping out things that shouldn't be cropped out. Leave enough room between the edges of the panel and the point of focus to emphasize what you want to emphasize. Close-up shots shouldn't be too frequent (in fact, personally I don't like doing close-up shots but it doesn't mean they're bad or shouldn't be done, again, my word isn't gospel!), especially if what you're conveying isn't too emotionally charged. Lastly, I have terrible news for people who hate drawing hands. Hands are possibly the second most expressive part of our body (if we don't count the body as a whole), so especially for your charismatic characters, you will very often want to use hands as a tool of expression.
(Think how much emotion and personality would be lost if the hands weren't there!)
3. Not letting dialogue be the main driving force behind storytelling
With my comics, I play an incredibly dangerous game called "I'll think of dialogue as I make the storyboard and then when I'm done drawing every page I'll write the dialogue over it guided solely by memory and whatever I drew". Don't do this. Have a script in hand or write it at the same time as you draft your storyboard. The reason I do this is because I'm lazy and I don't want to open a simple writing software to type down a script. Genuinely I have no other reasons. Anyway, the only advantage this gives to my comics is that they will generally be able to stand on their own without much dialogue; obviously dialogue is essential, but what I mean is that we don't need it to have a pretty accurate read on the room.
For example, if I remove all the dialogue from this page, you probably can't guess exactly what's being discussed. However, you can identify through their emotions alone that there is disbelief, bargaining, and finally a pretty devastating info was dropped. Alternatively, cutting down dialogue from your page and leaving room to expressions/body language alone can be entirely more beneficial than having any dialogue to begin with.
AKA Readers aren't stupid (some may be, but the majority can extrapolate just fine). You'll realize how much you don't need words and how your stories can be even more funny/impactful by pushing forward visual storytelling.
4. Paneling conveys emotion too, actually
Being a "good" artist isn't enough to make good comics. The way you panel things is extremely important, because it sets the tone, mood, pace, you name it. Some of the best works out there are the ones with the most care put into the flow of the comic. You need to understand how people will read it, and it starts with what order you deliver the information and how. This is paneling 101, but a page with irregularly shaped panels, multiple changing camera angles and such will be exponentially more dynamic than a page where each panel is the same size, have similar compositions and/or repetitions with little to no diagonal or curved lines of action.
The two examples above are WIPs from 2 different stories so unfortunately you'll have to make do with the rough sketches. That being said, you don't need to know the context of either pages to know the kind of emotion that should be felt through the paneling alone. Give time for the important emotions to be processed by the reader (unless it's intentionally fast-paced). Every emotion that needs to be emphasized should have its own panel.
In this example, I could easily have condensed these two panels into one by transferring the dialogue from the second into the first and jumping on to the next action. However, it would undeniably give much less impact to Kaveh's disbelief. On an inverse situation, sometimes you will want to condense two panels you made into one, because whatever those two panels are doing are perhaps not important enough to deserve separate panels! Lastly, you can notice that the space on the page is not always filled. Leaving space between each panel and/or between the edges of the page gives room for the reader to breathe and slows down the flow; and inversely, if you want to make the situation more frantic, make everything look more tight and constricted.
5. Not showing facial expressions sometimes conveys more emotion than doing so
This ties nicely to the point I made about body language. You don't need to see a character's face to know what they're going through, necessarily. Sometimes, their posture or their dialogue is enough. In my opinion, a story is more compelling when this equilibrium of facial expressions / body language / paneling / dialogue is correctly adjusted-- you will not need to have all the elements to convey the message or it could be a little overbearing. I don't have many examples for this one because they tend to be more relevant in dramatic scenarios, which I haven't done that many of.
(The first one is once again from a WIP)
And that's about it for my insane guide on comic-ing. I hope ANY of it made sense.
***
Here's a round up of extra tips, focused entirely on the drawing part which might be more of what you asked to begin with :'D
- That little line/wrinkle that adds so much character
Yall know what I'm talking about. In my opinion, too many artists are afraid of giving laugh lines/wrinkles because it makes their characters look older, except when it's to add those sexy sexy eyebags. I'm encouraging everyone to add them to their art little by little and see how much it can improve the expressiveness! Obviously, I don't use it everywhere, but it's a very effective way to make your expressions feel even more... well. expressive.
- Line of action
You've probably seen this picture going around before, from Preston Blair:
Although it's called line of action which implies action, this line is important even when the character isn't really in action.
You can gain a lot in expressiveness when you think of the body as one whole fluid instead of a sum of multiple disjointed parts. This is why drawing a very rough base comprised of only lines and circles can help figure out if the posing works before you start refining it.
On a different note, animation principles work very much in comics as well! I recommend looking up animation guides especially those that show how to make key poses.
- Shadows and/or color fill
This is one I will use quite often for different situations.
Shadows can immediately set a tone when they're used dramatically. For example, a shadow over a character's face can convey unease and/or evil intent.
On the other hand, I will use color fills for different purposes:
Differentiating ground layers
This can help with readability.
2. Conveying a certain mood
It can separate the character from the color of their background to give a sense of isolation, reflection, realization, being disconnected from their surroundings, etc...
- Don't be scared of using codes / tropes / archetypes
...As long as it benefits the narrative, of course. By codes / tropes / archetypes, I mean posing or expressions or visual effects that are universally understood and used for specific expressions. The semicircle sweatdrops and blush made with slashes are incredibly typical of manga/anime, but it doesn't mean they're bad! Visual effects are there to help remove the ambiguity of an expression considering a single expression without visual codes could convey multiple emotions!
- Find what inspires you and take notes!!!
In my case, what greatly shaped my art style to what it currently is: One Piece, the Ace Attorney series and Mob Psycho 100 (yes, I only watched the latter last year but it still managed to become a source of improvement/inspiration for my art even at my current level, because you'll never stop improving :) )
I hope this wasn't too long or too off-topic, and I hope it can also help other people who might be interested! Thank you for reading!

First of all I want to say that I love your art and I really admire it. It has kind of make me want to go back to drawing again. I used to draw a lot a few years ago but I stopped because I became unhappy with my progress. Now I want to go back to making art but I'm insecure about it because I'm worried I'm too old to start again (I'm 19) and whether I'm capable of relearning it properly. Do you have any tips about where to begin to learn art basics (specifically anatomy)? I would appreciate any advice.
Hello!!! Firstly thank you so much for the compliments, it really does mean so much <333
I'm nineteen, too! Of course you can start art again. I've taken a lot of breaks in between my own art, too, and it's only very recently that I started enjoying making art again (after .... like.... a year or two. lord) so I really do understand how you feel. But we're nineteen years young, and have so much time ahead of us to get back on our feet.
In my experience, improving comes quickest when you focus on one very specific skill at a timeāand I mean SPECIFIC. Practicing gestures with torsos only, the muscles of the upper arm, skeleton heads in different angles. I've been studying arm anatomy (and only arm anatomy) recently, and I'm already miles ahead of how I used to draw arms in the past.
If you want a specific step by step on how I personally draw anatomy, I don't mind sharing a quick tutorial! But for general adviceāform follows gesture, and gesture follows movement. The biggest mistake someone can make while drawing a body is focusing on the accuracy of the muscles/bones before getting the flow of the gesture down.
Even if the anatomy looks a bit wonky with the gesture, it's important that you capture the movement of the pose first, and then build muscle on top of that. Proko on Youtube has a very good quick drawing series on this, and explains it way better than I do, but that's the gist of it.
Also, PLEASE always use references! I know that hearing that gets old, but it's really important. If you'd like, I can make a quick tutorial on how to use references properly, too. Reference everythingāpose, lighting, even art style if you're looking to switch things up (i have about 10 different tabs open on my computer with different artists I admire so I can reference their art religiously).
Speaking of referencing art styles, it's important to gather a bunch of artists you like in terms of style, and not just one. The trick is to separate them by skillā"this artist is for lining refs", "this artist is for anatomy refs", "this artist is for face refs", etc, etc.
And to jump off of That: I find that with anatomy, looking at other peoples' anatomy studies on pinterest is also very helpful. Obviously you should be referencing from real life too, but with art, it can be difficult to pin down what to put on the page and what to leave to the imagination. You wouldn't want to actually draw every single muscle in the arm individually, right? So I go and look at other artists' anatomy studies to see what they keep and what they don't keep.
(usually i find them on pinterest, and they look smth like this. the color coded ones especially help me.)
I'd recommend learning gesture and anatomy first, then building off of that to learn how to draw faces, then lining/coloring, just so that you have a solid base to work off on when it is finally time to color. (also because coloring/lighting requires a fair bit of how body anatomy works as well!!)
But yes, that's all the advice I can give from laying in my bed. I hope it helped somewhat, and if you'd like tips on how to do something more specific, I'm always willing to draw it out or go more in depth ^^ Best of luck on your art journey!

hewwo anj!!!! I was reading your post on how you break down arthur's likeness and how you study/what you noticed for him body language wise, how his facial features are, etc. and if that's possible, would you ever do the same for merlin? Regardless, thank you for ur merlin art ily ā¤ļøš«¶
sorry i took forever to get to this fyscka!! i got real busy lmao. anyways thoughts abt it under the cut
once again going to try not to sound weirdly obsessive abt this stuff because it sounds more insane when i put all the details into words when they just like. exist as nebulous thoughts in my brain. idk anyways
more tracing because tracing is good for figuring things out.. also fun. when you trace things a bunch for practice you pick up on the repetition like. how someone's face looks with different movement and the overlap between them. like how similar a happy expression can be to an aggressive expression and how similar an aggressive expression can be to a terrified one. if that makes sense
it is interesting too with merlin because he varies a lot over the seasons? not just with being yknow. older. like hes thinner in s2-4 than s1+5, and we all know how much his haircut varies. i dunno i just think facially he varies a lot more than arthur
sorry again for crunchy images heres a few specifics i tend to notice
when hes fighting or putting in a lot of physical strength/effort his mouth pulls up high and his nose scrunches which causes a crease from the corners of his nose. same crease as you would see when he smiles, but since the nose is scrunched the part of the crease next to the nose is more prominent. usually when i see people scrunch their nose like that it wrinkles on top of the bridge but his seems to wrinkle more at the sides. also eyebrow furrow very important
hes got a very strong chin its rather large and squared off. his eyes and the folds beneath his eyes crinkle a lot when he smiles. the smile lines appear with a point to them. also hes got a very prominent adams apple
low eyebrows, widest at their arch which is more lateral. ill talk more abt his teeth in a minute but hes got the american girl doll teeth when his lips are parted lmao
his eyes are pretty deep set, so when you see him in profile theres a good bit of distance between the bridge of his nose and his eye. when his hair is longer the hair around his ears tends to curl towards his face. same w the hair on his neck. his nose has a pretty subtle bump to the bridge and then the tip turns up a bit, but overall Not an upturned nose
his ears stick out we know this..... you can see the contrast of the hollow of his cheeks vs his mouth muscle sometimes (usually more in s2+3). his nose is in a pretty neutral position here
as opposed to this one where his nose broadens a little with his smile. smile lines again pretty triangular.
faces are soft and when one feature moves usually the others slightly move/change with it. some other things are teeth which i meant to talk abt in the arthur post too, but yeah. merlin's got pretty prominent front teeth, and arthur's got his one crooked canine. hair also is (at least to me) pretty important... his hair is always cropped above the eyebrows and imo he's less recognizable as merlin if its not. its not especially fluffy or curly either. not to say he cant be drawn with different haircuts haha, sometimes it just makes him a little harder to recognize
again body shape + language is just as important is not more so, bc we're drawing a character not an actor!! theres a few things i think about w merlin
- hes pretty thin with the exception of s5, but always pretty lanky lookin - just generally pretty angular? idk - he is somewhat broad but the slouching and not being shredded (usually) tend to negate that a little - he crouches a lot or pulls his legs up when he sits (hes so real for that) - when hes not using his hands they tend to just be at his sides, when he's standing he'll put them behind his back sometimes, when talking he'll gesture with them usually around his head or hip/waist level - he slouches more than arthur, his shoulders are usually somewhat forward - when he's confused or teasing often he'll push his head forward - tilts his head a lot when hes teasing or happy or confused - draws his shoulders up to his ears when he's uncomfortable, confused, or frightened - whereas arthur moves very purposefully, merlin moves in a way that just looks like he has a lot less spatial awareness idk a better way to describe it lmao. like u know hes clumsy even when he's not actively being clumsy
honestly i dont tend to put too much detail in faces because i dont draw in a very realistic style so i tend to lean more into shapes and body language to make characters recognizable, but knowing how the face works still plays into it a lot?
anyways i hope this makes at least a little sense lmao
#ask#feuxx#if u saw the other post no u didnt#i couldnt edit things properly on my laptop it was getting weird#how i draw

Hi! Hope you're doing well!
I'm trying to learn how to properly draw people. I'm fairly decent at drawing objects, but people? Nope, that's out of question. So, do you have any tips for a beginner? Like what should I focus on, any YT channels, etc.?
(If you see this ask on other pages as well, it's because I'm sending this to my favorite artists on this site <3)
Hyello!
I don't know if I'm exactly the person you should asking, seeing as I'm still fairly new to art so I'll point you in the direction of a few of my personal favorite artists as well! I do have a few tips and exercises for you that I've found to be quite helpful (if not fun) that have been passed down to me by other artists and teachers, though.
1. You should really learn your anatomy before you try to find your specific style. Without knowing the basics first, you'll probably jump around and have no consistency when drawing the same character. Knowing the body is very, very important.
Exercise 1: Using reference photos (I recommend dancing and sports photos for more dynamic shapes, beauty influencers and photographery for what is typically "attractive," and lots of different body types and skin tones for a diverse and more realistic character) and trying to figure out the line of action, then make a gesture drawing to get the basic feel of the body's movements, then the shapes of the body, etc.
Exercise 2: (The fun version) Draw a random shape. Yes, a random one - it can be pointed or round or wavy. It just has to connect. Then, try to make a character that fits in the bounds of that shape. This will push you to try to figure out what is necessary to make a human look, well, human, and also limit the clutter of your characters' accessories and clothing. It also helps you create a unique silhouette (which is always great when making a good, recognizable character)
-
2. Colors! I'm sure you know basic color theory from when you learned how to draw objects, but if not, you should definitely get on that. It's best to know what colors work best with specific skin tones or whatever you're putting on your character. There are a lot of color theory videos on YT which I think you should check out!
Exercise 1: Limit yourself to 1 color - you may only use variations of that color for your entire character. Yes, this includes skintone and hair. This exercise helps you with values and gets you connected to what places need darker or lighter colors. It's also just really, really fun.
Exercise 2: (Variation of 1) Find a color pallette and stick to those colors exclusively. Try to use the 60-30-10 rule if possible (meaning 60% of the character is one color, 30% is a different color, and 10% is another color). Not everyone adheres to this rule since character design is fluid, and you can do whatever the heck you want, but I personally think that it helps to push your knowledge of color.
Exercise 3: The internet is your best friend. Find a very colorful image online of a model that you really like, or a person that's sitting in some nice lighting, or even an animated character that had some funky colors. Try to imitate the rendering. Shading is pretty important when learning how to draw because it can really change how the muscle looks without it. (Depending on your style, shading can look very, very different.)
-
3. (Extension of Color) Once again, shading is very important! Depending on the project, however, the way you should shade can be very different. For animations, shading is typically minimal so that they can focus on the movement and not slave over their computer for days on end shading and shading and shading. Keep that in mind! For cartoon or anime art styles, it's often blocky and not blended. For real-life proportions and art styles, it's often blended and rendered (and normally without line-art if that's the route you wanna go š).
Exercise 1: Try out and study all sorts of art styles and shading types! It's really helpful in the future if you want to know what you like best! If you want to study a specific artists' art, it's best to ask them beforehand, however. Get their OK before starting. If they say no, then don't. (By the way, no art style is original, no matter what anyone says.)
-
4. There are lots of online courses or resources you can use! Utilize them. Some of my favorites/things I've heard good things about are...

5. Youtubers and Content Creators !!! There are a lot that I watch and a lot that other artists have recommended to me, so I'll tell you them. Also, find your favorite artists on your favorite social media sites and mentally study their art when you see it! Trust, it helps. (Warning: Long List)
Drawfee Show - They're very funny + watching how they quickly build their characters and settings can really help you figure out what is most important in character design.
Hanacue - Their shading is to DIE for <3
Marikyuun - Very good with a cutsie art style!
Kooleen - Funny, sarcastic + amazing tips
Marc Brunet - Anatomy at its finest
At Lojart - I just find them really cool
Jaiden Animations - Silly + watching her animations can help with your animations
GinjaNinjaOwO - They're funny + their character design makes me want to scream /pos
LavenderTowne - Very sweet + great tips + cute art!!

Naoki Saito illust Channel - Putting stories/feeling into your art made easier
HxxG - More attractive art <3
Coax Illust - Fun! Semi-realism (I could never)
-
6. Lastly, learning art takes a long, long time. You can't just wake up one day and know how to draw. You have to keep trying and keep learning and never, ever give up. It's all part of the journey, even the pieces that you don't like. Practice doesn't make perfect. It makes permanent. <3
My favorite artists (and my moots <3): @gl4ssfan , @aiyumiyeou , @coffeeisfortheresponsible , @foxlow , @roselock22 @alicecraftgirl @twigs-sprigs @greenflowerceo @spoopy-sloth @laziilizard @enavstars @miyuliart
Hope this long post didn't bore you! Plus, I hope this helps. Have a wonderful day <33

8 and 16 for the choose violence ask
8. Common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about.
That Dean would return Casās love confession
Okay no actually you know what. Iām gonna talk about that. Maybe itās just me being deep in Aro!Dean land, but Iām not seeing it. Iām not seeing at any point in the show where Dean loved Castiel. And Iāve been looking, I swear, but Iām. Thereās no destiel on my screen. There is a lot more sastiel than I remember but thereās no destiel happening on my screen! There IS a lot of Castiel clearly having Problems and Issues and Angst about dean, and. Zero doubt here there that that angel wants to fuck him. But I honestly canāt imagine any happy ending for dean that revolves solely or even mostly around a romantic attachment. That man is hardwired for family being the most important thing to him, and I love that. Aro!Dean wins again.
Other notable things include: headcanoning Sam as not queer/trans because heās too boring. Talked about that. Weird fucking opinion to have. That Gabriel is not exactly as fucked up as the other archangels, especially when presenting sabriel as the Good Sam Ship as opposed to samifer. My dudes, did we not watch mystery spot, do the reading. Also. Also. Not acknowledging the really clear character degradation of Lucifer in the later seasons/attributing later seasons stuff to how he acts in s5, just a personal gripe because whatever, people can read him however they want, but I really feel like on a meta level you gotta talk about how these are Two Different Characters who just happen to have been jammed into the same character. Okay. I think thatās it.
16. You canāt understand why people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc.)
I do not like coffee shops AUs. Actually, itās more that im Extremely picky about AUs that arenāt canon divergence, and will drop them immediately the minute I feel like Iām no longer reading about the characters I like and am instead reading about Generic Guys who say funny quips and then kiss. Which is not a coffee shop au specific problem but the frequency with which that kind of au attracts that writing means I have kind of been turned off from ever reading them again.
if you are writing Sam into your coffee shop au and at some point he does not drop some insane backstory about the time he was kidnapped and forced to fight to the death with a bunch of other college kids, you have failed at writing this au and I am banishing you to the shadow realm /j
The other thing that I do not understand at all, and this extends into a problem with canon, Iām well aware, is how happily people will accept the idea that Castiel is rebellious/different from other angels because he was just Made Wrong. heās too Broken to be like a real angel. that all the other angels are mindless drones and Castiel is the one good one who could learn about free will, usually justified with it being that āhis love for dean is what makes him specialā, but even outside of destiel circles, this kind of thing gets very annoying lmao.
And itās just. Thatās wrong. The show might have decided post-s8 that it believed this about Castiel but itās False and Bad. Iām gesturing wildly at Uriel and Anna and Gabriel and Lucifer and Balthazar and Michael and shit whatās that one angel doing pinball I love them, them too, and Castiel is not special!!! He should not be special!!! All angels have the capacity for free will, they are living under a terrifying system of suppression that has stripped them of their ability to use it and has taught them that when an angel does something they disagree with, killing them is a mercy! (See: the implications of that one angel healer in s9 + Uriel and Cas being sent to kill Anna for falling in s4)
CASTIEL IS NOT SPECIAL. STOP SAYING HE IS SPECIAL. THE CRACK IN THE CHASSIS LINE IS BAD TO HOLD UP AS EVIDENCE OF HIM BEING UNIQUELY FLAWED.
ahem. sorry. i like the supernatural angels. i think making castiel into some separate special being who is the only one capable of rebelling and feeling love and etc does a massive disservice to the heaven storylines and angels as a whole. i think the showās choice to never have another major angel character who wasnāt killed off quickly/made ātoo evilā to redeem was a bad decision and contributes to this view of cas as Different and The Good One.

25. Have you ever upset yourself with your own writing?
yes. many times. writing process typically swings between getting really emo about the characters and going full sickos mode about it all. things that I would call upsetting would probably be all of I speak as one about to die. mmm tragedy. and the torture scenes in NO SAFE PLACE. especially the part about Lazar. Um. Crumbling like a wet cookie? turns out writing torture deals psychic damage to me, who knew. other fics have been sad for me and lived in my brain for a while but i would not call them upsetting on the same level.
12. Do you have a playlist for your current WIP(s)? Share it!
I don't have playlists for my current WIPs. I haven't really gotten into the habit, though I totally should, but usually my character/relationship playlists serve the same function. Anyways I did make one for the cquackity / karlnapity & cdream slasher wedding fic that is currently. not being worked on at all. it is. entirely made up of songs from Bleed Out and MCR songs.
15. How do you come up with titles for your fics/chapters?
I use a lot of song lyrics! A lot of mountain goats lyrics. 13 out of my 32 works use tmg lyrics for titles. I look for songs that I feel like match the vibe or theme of the fic. The Mountain Goats have many songs with many themes. Otherwise I like using lines from the source text, if the fic in question was inspired by or was an au of something. Silver Dollar is from Arguing with the Ghost of Peter Laughner About His Coney Island Baby Review by TMG. because like. Dead guy. Elegy. gestures vaguely. put on your chairman mao coat because it pleases me to have that as a title and because commandante can be about dream and sapnap actually, if you look at it from the angle i'm standing at. Harlem Roulette can be about fundy and q, etc etc.
Everything Now As Day is a line from the Menelaiad by John Barth and WE ALL THINK YOU'RE A GRAND GIRL is a line from Antigonick by Anne Carson. I speak as one about to die is from Anne Carson's translation of Agamemnon. Kassandra says it :) you don't have to love it is a line from CM Punk's snake promo. left pining for transience is a line from the deeply wonderful Fiona Lu's poem Turing Test. dawn and mourning dove grey and turning from the plow are both lines from a song from the webcomic Sword Interval by Ben Fleuter, since both those fics exist in the SI au. The chapter titles for dawn and mourning dove grey are the names of the entries in the apocalypse log that reveals the circumstances of the worldbuilding and sets the stage for the final arc of the webcomic.
Titles that aren't direct references to something are still made with consideration to the fic itself. sometimes a fic is big enough 2 warrant a very simple and encompassing title as The Death Poem. The fox who traveled to the end of the world is called that bc I was trying very hard to emulate the style of the fairy tales and fables I read growing up, and those are like. Decently straightforward and referring 2 fundy as a fox emphasizes his trickster-ness. NO SAFE PLACE and BED [DIS]ASSEMBLY are like that because i appreciate all caps quite a lot, maybe an ill-advised amount. also sometimes its just the vibes. the vibes call for all caps.
before we cut to Alexandria is. hm. Well I can't recall atm the exact leaps in my thought process but the general gist is that it's a study of a very specific and liminal period of cabinetduo's relationship, set between the larger and Historical events of the election and the red festival and nov16, and Alexandria is this big important city and it's also a place that gets kind of famously destroyed a little but this isn't yet about Alexandria/L'Manberg. The poem doesn't even leave the White House. I also know it was inspired somehow by tmg's album Songs for Pierre Chuvin.
Journeying Into the Center of the Earth To Retrieve Your Dead Ex Boyfriend because that is what the fic is about and though it is not an instruction manual it is still a detailing of a process. and also because the concept was inspired by Carmen Maria Machado's Help Me Follow My Sister Into the Land of the Dead
#:3 i get very excited abt titling things#i like to make titles. i am fond of titles. this can also be seen via the weird shit i name my poems as well#i also like to make references to things and i particularly like to make references to the mountain goats and then point at the reference#and go guys look it's the mountain goats#and if you want i can go through every individual dsmp poem i have written and explain why they're titled that. but it might take me a whil#yens#asks#looks up from being very lost in thought about fic titles only to realize ive typed up five enormous paragraphs. hrm#smiles at u. thank u for the ask!

i might read John's showing up in Newport thing as a tiny bit less indicative of being Weird than you do... to me it seems sort of like, the sort of Grand Gesture impulsive thing you might do out of total desperation, especially if you consider they've been together a long time, John has been kind of repressing and hiding all his actual emotions about the situation so when he expresses them they come out in big bursts. Also, as far as we know, we never see him get input from anyone else about his relationship like friends etc so maybe its the sort of thing that makes sense in his head and its not like. Actually maybe this is not so good of an idea until he's already gone and done it
Thank you for the ask!! Love 2 read thoughts on this. And I see now after drafting this that you sent follow up ones too but i will go ahead publish this one first
I think my thoughts on that are. The Newport behavior makes sense as something to Think about doing... Many people think about things like that regardless of brainweirds. Winning an argument in the shower etc etc.
But actually doing it... especially when there are SO many steps to doing it. that is bonkers behavior. It isn't like, inherently mentally ill, like is that behavior someone without brainweirds would doāAlmost certainly so. sometimes people do ridiculous things. Fully believe there are guys who do that kind of thing and would not get diagnosed with Weird.
But. and this is most important to my brainweirds headcanon. it is not something that seemed to line up with the rest of John's behavior. It came totally out of left field for viewers, everyone went nuts. Blog reviewers that commented on the plotline universally were like "this is deranged and came out of nowhere, what a guy". logistically it is just. ridiculous amount of effort to go to for a guy who is giving introverted and going with the flow in most of his screentime. like he absolutely snapped, he had been holding back and communicating extremely poorly and making assumptions that he could ignore it and it would blow over etc, but the Way that he snapped...
I think a normal person would leave it at the restaurant. well truly I think a normal person would not have gone there during the restaurant but everyone has times where emotions run high! but i think it would have been left there and then he would have had a whole argument in private when oscar got home...
instead he goes completely absolutely out of his way specifically to draw attention to how wonderful and fine his life could be without acknowledging oscar in it at all and that he can make himself more desirable than oscar and harm oscar's plans... there are So many things he could have been trying to demonstrate but all of them ultimately, I think, are intentionally to fuck with or hurt oscar or at least to Teach Him A Lesson...
oscar, someone he otherwise seems to be quite ride or die for and is extremely in love with and is i think trying to serve that With whatever bananas sentiment he is directly trying to express with his newport behavior. Like he cares deeply about oscar but is still taking ridiculous steps to get the upper hand.
That is the part that doesn't make much sense in the context of his previous & upcoming behavior and most of his s2 behavior as well, and makes more sense when you decide you want him to have brainweirds! imho.
because like I think the key thing to keep in mind when looking at My thoughts etc on my tumblr dot com blog is that I am reading John Adams as brainweird because I want to. And I want to because, a, it is historically fun, that family was chock full of brainweirds, but also because, b, I myself am brainweird. But i do think it enhances the text and is supported by his actions !!
Also something I think is Very interesting is that when I polled, most people seemed to think that John would Not feel anything resembling regret or embarrassment etc about his actions in Newport... which was not at All the lens I myself was looking through because of my own experiences. like when my brain makes me do crazy shit it is like. Oh yes, I 100% agree with you, and for the record the earlier reblog was also not disagreeing with you but saying (in a very long and roundabout way) thank you for your contribution because with my background I just can't imagine feeling anxiety knowing my neighbor might have a gun. That's been a reality for me for the past 30+ years so it's not like it would change anything to consider it now!
But I am also really big on community building and community work regardless, so I think that whether you (general) are someone who is nervous about new CCL and/or open carry laws or not, you (general) should practice exactly the community building that you (specifically you) described! I find that it is not only helpful on a local sense, but as you said it also is a pretty big bigotry-killer and a good anxiety-reliever to know that despite a broad spectrum of political difference, your neighbors have your back regardless.
There is a gentleman down the street from me who is a retired police officer. He has a thin blue line flag out front and the way he talks about certain things make me think he's probably a Trumper. He's a middle aged white guy. Also he has a large amount of unfenced flat land covered in grass that would be perfect for me to use when training my dogs, so I asked him when I first moved in if it would be okay if I occasionally ran heeling drills on his land. Again, I read as a visibly queer, tall, broad black man - and I have dogs of breeds many people believe are aggressive and dangerous, and I'd just met this guy while he was mowing this grass. He told me that as long as I picked up after the dogs, he didn't mind at all, and he's held true to that the past couple years I've been there. Sometimes his wife runs cold water out for us when she sees us out there working.
He told me what streets to watch out for, asked me if I'm armed and told me to make sure that it stays the affirmative if I venture there, and also told me to come knock on his door if someone was bothering me at my house and he would "make sure it got taken care of". He gestured to his hip when he said that- he was not [visibly] armed at the time, but I'm sure a retired cop is very used to that weight at their side. I'd just met him and introduced myself as his new neighbor. Technically on the surface we are opposites on the political scale. But also, I'm his neighbor, and neighbors watch out for each other.
And I think that everyone would benefit from forming these types of connections with their neighbors when possible, because a community banded together to protect each other is significantly stronger than those who keep their windows shuttered while fearing the possibilities.
There was a homeless guy who lived in a little wooded spot in an empty lot a bit further down the road. All of us knew about him and left him alone. I would see people come out of their house and walk down the street and hand him food, water, clothes, blankets, etc. He never bothered anyone. One day the cops rolled up and cleared out all of his stuff and took him away. I haven't seen him since. But I have heard the neighbors outright state that they're angry that he was reported by someone, and that he wasn't bothering anybody and never did anyone any harm. That's including Mr Ex Cop Trumper, who told me to watch out for the apartment building inbetween our houses (owned by the annoying slumlord whose dead tree is still currently on my fence), whose wife I would see walking down the street to deliver a hot meal.
You (general) would be surprised at who actually wants to have a community with you, if given the chance. I think it's important to keep that in mind, always.
do you have any tips for being comfortable with other people concealed carrying since you're a gun owner? I'm not, but due to a recent law a place I previously considered a safe enough space is now allowing concealed carry (this comes after some shootings in the surrounding area, but again, the place itself didn't seem too bad). It's only for people with licenses, but the gun laws don't seem particularly strict in this area, and it's majority-white and uncomfortably conservative/ignorant when I'm visibly Black, queer, and disabled.
I'm pretty anxious about this, but I can't tell if that's just bc of my biases against guns or if I should actually be nervous considering the "lots of these people suck" circumstances of it all. Would you happen to know of anything I could do to feel more comfortable/safe (minus getting my own gun bc i'm too young even if I wanted to)?
I am not a gun owner. I do carry a weapon, I do not own a gun. I'm not the guy to go to for gun advice.

Reasons I think the dragon riders are autistic:
(This was written out of order over the course of several days)
Hiccup
ā¢ His interest in dragons. Multiple people literally say āhis life is dragonsā. I donāt think I need to expand on this point any more
ā¢ His deal with emotions - the way it seems to me is that unless heās very happy or genuinely angry, he doesnāt really emote much? His voice isnāt necessarily monotone but heās very same-y (in more than just tone - also body language and stuff) almost always aside from when incredibly gleeful (e.g. riding toothless) or very angry (literally any moment where he ends up yelling at the others)
ā¢ On a similar note, thereās several times (especially in rtte) where it looks like heās about to scold someone and then he doesnāt (in a kinda emotions/expressions not lining up with his actual thoughts and stuff way). Now, this doesnāt sound much here but an example is in the dramillion episode near the end of the ep so that kinda gives you a better idea of what I mean yknow?
ā¢ Also his massive interest in inventing, another pretty damn important thing in his life that heās very good at, to say the least. ļæ½ļæ½ļæ½ Another thing with emotions - heās pretty easy to manipulate. Which sounds so horrible to put but I mean it in like, his emotions specifically are kinda easy to manipulate and especially his empathy. Theyāre often used against him
ā¢ He notices details and you know how he constantly tells the twins theyāre geniuses after something they say reminds him of a completely unrelated point? Yeah idk how to explain it but thatās autism, baby
Astrid
ā¢ Stubborn - it takes a lot to change her views of opinions
ā¢ Fully believes there are right and wrong ways of doing things (and usually believes those ways are the more traditional ways that sheās used to)
ā¢ Idk if thereās even proof of this but I am dead certain she sticks to her rules almost all times. She doesnāt care about other peoples rules but despite that often has very strict views on how to do things which I think is why I believe this. She also hates going off-plan and that doesnāt rlly mean anything here but that probably adds to why Iām so sure she likes rules
ā¢ Again no proof of this but she seems like the type to be very particular about her daily routine. If she decides to switch it up once she now gonna keep that for months. You can ignore this point but this is something I wholeheartedly believe.
ā¢ The vibes
Fishlegs
ā¢ Heās honestly the only character who might have actually been written as autistic (but also may not have been and instead be written as a nerd, but obviously that trope alone just makes him autistic by default)
ā¢ Same as hiccup, huge huge interest in dragons. No need to elaborate here
ā¢ Very empathetic, many autistic people experience either notably low empathy or high empathy. Fishlegs very clearly is on the high side
ā¢ Also can I just say I love how on berk he was a guide and he taught kids all about berks history and dragons and shit like that like hell yeah making your special interest your job, good for him honestly
ā¢ I just watched legend of the boneknapper and I just noticed fishlegs talks with his hands a lot and makes a bunch of gestures while talking which I am absolutely counting here cause i want to
Snotlout
ā¢ Hand gestures. Like all the time. And a lot of the same ones. And Iāve got no clue if that actually is prevalent in autism or whatever but personal experience (I.e. me and my friends) suggest so + I relate so Iām counting it
ā¢ Gonna sound dumb, but āshut up, [name]ā and just common phrases he repeats. ā¢ On that note: he yells his own name frequently (typically while doing something cool or when annoyed or etc. emotional reasons) and I interpret that as kinda a stim, helping with emotions type deal yknow? ā¢ Again related to that, āSnotlout Snotlout oi oi oiā (copied from spitelouts own version) is absolutely a vocal stim, and while Iām like 80% sure copying vocal patterns and phrases from the people around you is a thing everyone does, Iām still counting it anyway ā¢ Very big emotions/kinda dramatic. Idk how to phrase this but at any given point it is very clear what Snotlouts emotions are - and I know a lot of autistic folk (myself included) are generally quite monotone or struggle with expressing emotion outwardly, but this feels right so again counting it. + exaggerating emotions is a thing I do all the time to make things more obvious
ā¢ Hate to say this one but just the general way he treats people - he often doesnāt notice the way people react and he just continues with his (often pretty shit) treatment of them, can be seen in the unwanted advancements towards Astrid Heather etc and how certainly initially he didnāt rlly seem to get the message
ā¢ To put the last point more clearly: this boy has the absolute worst social skills and has no idea about that
ā¢ He doesnāt always get when people are making fun of him or being sarcastic
ā¢ I mention this with Tuffnut as well, but Snotlouts also pretty sarcastic even tho he doesnāt always get other peoples sarcasm
ā¢ Heās pretty blunt. Or he confuses himself with his own words. Thatās pretty much the two sides of Snotloutās speech patterns
ā¢ heās my favourite character <3
Ruffnut
ā¢ Her whole deal with violence, particularly in rob/dob - I donāt know how to describe it but something about that
ā¢ Her and Tuffnut both get like random interests and they know loads about it or otherwise devote a lot of time to it - e.g. science when they were sick with eel pox, theatre in Total Nightmare, other examples Iām sure but I canāt remember rn. It just reminds me of myself and hyperfixations I get
ā¢ She doesnāt really care to change how she acts around different people; regardless of whether sheās been captured by enemies, is being scolded by Hiccup or is setting up a prank with tuffnut, sheās always the same.
ā¢ On that note, sheās often pretty blunt. Like unless sheās talkin fancy deliberately or trying to trick someone shes usually pretty clear and doesnāt usually change how she acts or speaks to make others feel better. ā¢ Yknow how her and Tuffnut were all like āwoah maybe we did somethingā¦ right? [ā¦] whatās this feeling is this accomplishment? Iāve never felt this beforeā and stuff that one time? I know itās played off as a joke, but Iām diagnosing that with same <3
ā¢ Mirroring speech (see briefly in tuffnuts section)
Tuffnut
ā¢ Similar thing with violence
ā¢ Same as the hyperfixations thing I mentioned with Ruffnut, and just know there are plenty of things they say that I attribute to past hyperfixations
ā¢ Several occasions where he doesnāt get sarcasm
ā¢ He is pretty sarcastic tho despite that, same with Snotlout and that is something I feel is quite common - not really getting other peoples jokes or sarcasm but doing so yourself a lot
ā¢ His speech is very reminiscent of my own, he talks kinda overly fancy and deliberate most of the time (but there are also occasions where heās almost overly casual? Which again is very relatable to me. I am now realising I may or may not have accidentally stolen tuffnuts speech patterns as a kid)
ā¢ (To the last point ignoring the part at the end) Ruffnut is also similar in this respect (as in the deliberate kinda overly wordy talk) but usually to a lesser extent - in fact, she normally only speaks like that when tuffnut is also there and speaking in such way, which to me absolutely seems like mirroring
ā¢ Similarly to the sarcasm thing, he doesnāt get rhetorical questions. Or at the very least doesnāt get them in that one episode in rtte and thatās enough for me to count it here
To be clear, at the end of the day, I see them all as autistic mostly cause I relate to and connect with the characters. And I do not know how to put that into words clearly so hereās this mess of a compilation.

ok the Haywoods being Black is so important to me and important to the plot but have we talked about just How Important that is? yes the obvious line of plot (them being exploited etc.) but also very specifically their mannerisms????
ive seen the headcanon circling around that OJ is autistic. im not gonna say no he isnt, because everyone is entitled to that opinion... but like... your evidence isnt evidencing because the traits youre saying he has because hes autistic seem to be a lot more because heās Black. specifically a dark skinned Black man. ALSO WHOSE BEST FRIEND IS HIS SISTER.Ā
bell hooks wrote about the history and generational trauma when it comes to Black people and gaze. google is free. HOWEVER I want us to remember (with this fucked up ass movie coming out) why was Emmett Till brutally murdered? because he looked. when I was growing up I would get smacked by my mom if i got caught staring at someone. in any context. if I hold eye contact while expressing boundaries to any white person, my doing so would be seen as an act of malice. not because of my tone or anything (im neurodivergent I am so aware of my tone at all times) but because im making eye contact. also, because of slavery and the generational trauma that has still made its way into parenting tactics today, Black people are always respectful. always. we were raised that way. so it only makes SENSE that OJ is avoiding eye contacting the he is spared by jean jacket (and they even were able to coexist) was because he respected her. he respected that she was the predator and her space.
ANOTHER THING thatĀ I've noticed is that Black boys with good relationships with their sisters exhibit a very specific set of mannerisms that OJ executes perfectly. the gentle reminders, conveying intensity with the smallest of gestures. he doesnt need to tell her he loves her for us to get that. hes her biggest supporter and at the end of the day she knows she can count on him; hes her family.Ā
ALSO (I have so many thoughts on this movie) someone on here said that they are doing the things you tell the main protagonists in likeĀ ānormalā horror movies not to do and you keep rooting for them. and if I remember correctly they say itās because u understand their motivation behind it, but like low-key high key, I think a big part of why you root for them is because theyāre Black. Jordan peele said multiple times that the reason the movie is called nope is because that how Black people behave in horror movies (not midsommar tho but tbh I blame white academia for that one) we say nope and we run. and so this idea of not doing that is so (not necessarily) abnormal (but thatās the only word that came to mind), that you cant help but root for them.
tldr: I love when Black people make shit for Black people.Ā

Every Single Issue I Have With S*lki (Itās Not Just The Selfcest)
Here goes. I threatened to post this a few days ago and never did, but I just saw a s*lki stan Twitter account claim that Loki caring about Sylvie more than the whole multiverse was a Good And Romantic thing and it pushed me over the fucking edge, so now you all have to read this. Iāve divided it into categories cause thereās just THAT much.
OOC Bullshit
ā¢ First and foremost, no amount of mental gymnastics you do will ever make me believe that this specific Loki- the one that just invaded New York, that just came off a year of Thanos Torture, that just got done being influenced by the sceptre, that was literally in the middle of a crisis already, and then on top of that went through all the trauma of Ep 1- would even be worried about a romantic relationship. That would be the furthest thing from his mind. Go back and watch how he acted in Avengers- you think that guy would abandon his previous mission to become a snivelling simp for a girl heād just met 3 days prior? Yeah, thereās no universe in which that makes sense.
ā¢ āItās very in character for Loki to fall in love with himself lololol-ā NO, itās literally not. Out of all the characters in the mcu, I donāt think I can think of anyone that genuinely hates themselves more than Loki. He even referred to all his other male variants as āmonstersā and said meeting them was āa nightmareā in this series. Heās got so much self-loathing, plus the fact that he genuinely thinks himself to be an evil backstabbing scourge- so thereās no evidence at all suggesting that he would ever develop a fondness for, or even be inclined to trust, another version of himself, after only knowing them for 3 days.
ā¢ Building on that, the whole concept of Loki falling in love with a version of himself just feeds into the annoying ass misconception that heās a narcissist. No matter which way you stack it, heās not. If youāre referring to NPD, he doesnāt fit the criteria, and if youāre saying ānarcissistā just as a slang term meaning āselfish and arrogantā, that still doesnāt accurately describe him. But when creators like Waldron and Herron do things like having him fall in love with himself, it makes it so much easier for casual viewers to think that he is.
Shitty LGBT Rep
ā¢ Itās kinda sus that Lokiās are allegedly genderfluid and yet the only female-presenting variant we see (and apparently the only female-presenting variant there is, cause the male Lokiās all seemed unfamiliar with the concept) is treated as some kind of mind-bogglingly special paradox. Also very sus that, out of all the Loki variants, the one our Loki falls in love with just so happens to be the only female one. What a coincidence.
ā¢ The fact that the creators of the show went around bragging about Lokiās bisexuality and Marvel purposefully (lbr) allowed stories about Loki possibly having a male love interest to circulate, specifically enticing queer viewers to watch the show (you know, the definition of queerbaiting), and then instead of having a male love interest (Loki was the first queer main character, so it was the perfect opportunity) they gave us *gestures to this dumpster fire* thisā¦ itās just a middle finger to LGBT fans. The fact that they would rather have this relationship with all its myriad of problems than have a gay relationship is justā¦ā¦. Very telling.
ā¢ While him being with a woman obviously doesnāt refute his bisexuality, the fact that they showed/talked about him being interested in 3 different women (flight attendant, Sylvie, Sif) and never even hinted at him being attracted to a man, definitely makes it seem like they were trying to cover up his bisexuality to smooth things over with the more homophobic viewers. You know? Itās like āI know youāre pissed that we sorta confirmed Loki as bi, so we promise weāll never mention it again! Or even hint at it! As a matter of fact, weāll give him lots of female lovies and make him seem as straight as possible! Thatāll take your mind off of that horrible crumb of queer rep, right? Please please please keep giving us your money!!!ā
ā¢ Aside from all the other issues, at its core, the biggest reason why I think Iām so irritated with s*lki is that it took one of the most interesting, complex, and diverse characters in cinema atm and squished him into a tired ass unnecessary heteronormative subplotā¦. Like literally every. single. other. protagonist. ever. Loki is such a unique character, and itās so so so incredibly disappointing that they stuck him into that same boring cookie cutter romance that happens to every other character in every other movie Iāve ever seen. Itās a disservice, and itās honestly just not compelling or entertaining at all.
Thematic Issues Galore
ā¢ His arc didnāt need a romance. With anyone. It was unnecessary and it didnāt make sense plot-wise. In fact, one of the reasons he was my fav prior to this was because he was the only big-name mcu character whose story wasnāt muddied-up by a romance that didnāt need to be there. So much for that.
ā¢ He wasnāt emotionally ready for a romantic relationship with anyone. Hell, just a genuine friendship wouldāve been pushing it for him at this point. He was in such a bad state that any relationship he got into wouldāve been toxic and unhealthy for both him and the other person, and it doesnāt make sense why the writers would want to put him in one when there were so many cons and essentially no pros (other than āUwu arenāt they cute togetherā).
ā¢ Sylvieās character in general was unnecessary and Lokiās character was robbed just by her being there. The whole show became about her post-Ep 2. They spent most of the time giving her backstory, building her up, telling us how awesome she is, trying to convince us to like her, etc when what they really needed to be doing was building Loki up- cause I gotta say, if I had to describe TVA!Loki in a few words, they would be Flat, Boring, and Weak.
ā¢ The romance overtakes the plot. They spend time portraying their supposed connection that couldāve been spent adding depth and complexity to literally any of the characters. They make the big Nexus Event them giving each other googly eyes on Lamentis when it couldāve been so many other way more profound things that speak to the fundamental nature of Lokiās. They have the climax of the finale be āoh no she betrayed him to kill He Who Remainsā when it couldāve been something way more compelling (Loki having a moral crisis over whether or not to kill HWR, Loki contemplating the state of the multiverse and weighing the pros and cons of freedom vs order, Loki looking into some What If situations and getting emotional about what couldāve been regarding his family, Loki realising the gravity of HWRās offer and finally coming to terms with how important he is to the universal cycle, etc etc). The entire plot suffered in favour of a romance that half of us didnāt even want.
ā¢ It essentially reduced all of Lokiās potential character growth down to āHe did it for his crush.ā He seemed to at least have some motivations of his own in Ep 1-2 (feeble as they were) but after Sylvie showed up in Ep 3, literally every action he took was just him being a simp for her. Why did he lie in the interrogation? To try to protect Sylvie. Why did he fight the minutemen and Timekeepers? To survive kinda, but mostly cause it was important to Sylvie. Why did he get pruned? Cause he got distracted trying to confess his crush to Sylvie. Why did he try to get out of The Void? Cause he thought Sylvie needed him. Why did he stay in The Void? Cause Sylvie was staying. Why did he try to enchant Alioth? Cause Sylvie told him to. Why did the multiverse get cracked open, leading to an infinite number of Kangs waging war on all of existence? Cause Loki didnāt wanna hurt Sylvie in their fight at the Citadel and then get distracted by her kissing him. Itās uninteresting and honestly pretty embarrassing.
ā¢ Throughout their ārelationship arcā the writers do their absolute damndest to convince us that we should like Sylvie more than Loki. And you know what? Itās the most hypocritical shit Iāve ever seen. They preach and preach about how Sylvieās life has been so difficult/we should feel bad for her/she had it so bad/poor poor sylvie/she had it SO much worse than pampered prince Lokiā¦. But then they never even touch on any of Lokiās trauma of hardships (the ones that have been ignored for literally 3 movies now). They frame Sylvie as a good person and a Freedom Fighter after she spent literal decades/centuries mass-murdering brainwashed TVA agents and showing exactly zero remorse for itā¦.. but then they make it their mission to constantly remind us that Loki is a terrible person and constantly put him in situations where heās forced to acknowledge his wrongdoings/show remorse/admit to how āevilā he is for being a mass murderer for like 2 years. They show him on-screen having a wider range of powers than her, and perpetuate his whole shtick of being a āmaster manipulatorā or whateverā¦.. But then they make Sylvie āthe brawnā more competent, intelligent, and physically capable than him. Tell me how itās a good thing for a ship to be so narratively biased toward one character.
Missed Opportunities
ā¢ If they absolutely had to have a romance subplot, then they couldāve paired Loki with one of the characters that have already been established OR one of the characters that were a big part of the whole TVA storyline anyway. It wouldāve been so interesting if theyād revealed that Loki had a history with some of the players from previous films (Sif and Fandral both come to mind). It also wouldāve been really interesting if theyād given Loki a love interest that actually had some allegiance to the TVA as a whole (Mobius maybe, but not necessarily. It also couldāve been Renslayer or B-15). Hell, imo it wouldāve been cool if theyād followed through with that āSee you again somedayā line that he said to the flight attendant in Ep 1. ALL of these characters have way more chemistry with him than Sylvie, and they were also already relevant to the plot without wasting half the show to give background info on them.
ā¢ If they absolutely had to have a hetero-presenting love story involving an enchantress-type figure, then thereās a whole Enchantress (Amora) that was actually Lokiās love interest in the comics. Plus, fans have been screaming for Amora to appear in the mcu for years. Plus, Tom literally pitched an Amora/Loki storyline way back in 2012-13. Also, Lorelei (another enchantress) is also one of Lokiās love interests in the comics, and she already exists in the mcu (she was on Agents of SHIELD). There were several different established characters for them to choose from. Creating a whole knew amalgamation of a character and going with the āsheās a Loki variantā storyline was just completely unnecessary and made no sense.
ā¢ They completely robbed us of a Chaos Twins dynamic. Had they handled Sylvie better and not forced her and Loki to smooch, the two of them couldāve had a really really complex and interesting sibling relationship. Loki couldāve stepped into Thorās shoes and sort of used that new role to gain some self importance, and Sylvie couldāve finally had somebody to look out for her/teach her magic/be there for her. It wouldāve been very aesthetically pleasing, the vibes wouldāve been out of this world, it wouldāve been way more profound than this bs, and frankly it wouldāve been much more entertaining to watch.
ā¢ Lokiās relationship (read: obsession) with Sylvie completely overshadows all Lokiās other relationships in the show. Loki and Mobius were literally the focal point of the series in Ep 1-2, but after Sylvie showed up in Ep 3, they barely had any interactions with each other, and Mobius pretty much faded to the background entirely. Loki had the beginnings of a pretty interesting antagonistic relationship with Renslayer (with her wanting him pruned, then arguing with Mobius that he couldnāt be trusted), but after Sylvie showed up the dynamic shifted to focus on the history between her and Ravonna. Loki and B-15 started off very badly and openly disliked each other throughout Ep 1-2, and then in the end of Ep 2, Loki showed a little bit of concern for her when she was possessed, hinting that they might be inching toward a reconciliation- especially considering how obvious it was that Loki was gonna uncover the TVAās sins eventually. There was so much potential for him to be the one to give her her memories back and convince her to change sides, but no, of course that honor went to Sylvie. In fact, after Sylvie showed up, Loki and B-15 never even spoke to each other again.
Various S*lki Fails
ā¢ If they were trying to convince us that this affection was mutual, they completely failed. Thereās nothing Iāve seen that even hints at Sylvie feeling the same way about Loki that he does about her. At most, Iād say she has a slight endearment to him. She finds him likeable and sheās grudgingly fond of him, but she definitely isnāt in love with the guy. Maybe she thinks heās cute and hopes that he gets out of this mess alright, but her mission obviously comes before him- whereas, itās been confirmed multiple times that Loki cares about her above anything else. She doesnāt trust him, she looks at him like heās an incompetent fool half the time, she shows little to no reaction during most of his confession moments, and she kissed him as a means to distract him so that she could get him out of her way. Look, all Iām saying is, when you get into a relationship where one of you is way more invested than the other, it never ends well.
ā¢ This goes without saying for a lot of us, but the selfcest is just straight up odd and cringey. If youāre cool with that sort of thing, fine! People can ship what they want! But donāt pretend itās not at least a little bit uncomfortable. Yes, I know theyāre not technically siblings so itās not technically incest, and theyāre also not technically the exact same person, but theyāre similar enough that it makes things weird. And yes I know selfcest canāt happen in real life, so thereās no way to judge it morally, but neither can most of the other stuff that happens in these shows/movies (the Snap, Loki destroying jotunheim, superhero with powers being held accountable, mind control) and yet we still find ways to judge their morality, because they all mirror real-world events. (The snap= genocide; Loki destroying Jotunheim= bombing other countries; superhero accountability= weapons accountability; mind control= grooming and coercion). And lbr the closest real-world mirror to two versions of the same person (who may or may not share DNA, family, backgrounds, physical and emotion characteristics) being romantically involved with one another is incest. And you can be ok with that if you want- thatās your prerogative- but donāt get pissy just cause a lot of us are squicked out by it.
ā¢ The whole mirror metaphor (learning self love via each other) thing just fell completely flat. First of all, having Loki learn to love himself by looking at someone who mirrors him did not, in any way shape or form, require them to be romantically involved. But they were. Of course. Secondly, the creators have contradicted themselves so many times on whether Loki and Sylvie are the same or not, that it doesnāt even really register to the viewer that the mirroring thing was what they were going for. Finally, Loki and Sylvie are shown to have so little in common- and to have only the most bare minimum of similarities personality-wise- that it doesnāt even make sense that Loki would ālearn to love himself through loving herā. Like? Theyāre nothing alike. So how would he make the connection that he himself is actually pretty cool, based on her alone? Thereās virtually nothing in her that reflects him.
ā¢ I know the objective of the entire show was to convince us of how awesome and unique Sylvie is, but honestly her relationship with Loki just did the opposite. A hallmark of a Mary Sue is having her constantly upstage the male lead, and then having him instantly fall madly in love with her anyway. And thatās.. exactly what happened here. Everything theyāre doing to try to force her character to be more stan-able is really just forcing her to look more like their self-insert OC. Which is exactly what she is. It wouldāve been so much more satisfying if she didnāt have to try so hard to look cool, if they didnāt have to try so hard to make her backstory tear-inducing, if they didnāt have to turn our protagonist into a snivelling simp just to prove how incredible she supposedly is. Very much #GirlBoss energy and we all know how performative and cheap that is.
ā¢ The entire thing was too rushed, there was too little build-up, and it was nowhere near believable. As stated above, itās ridiculously unlikely that Loki would canonically even be interested in Sylvie, and this show did nothing to explain why he was. He just suddenly was. There was nothing they showed us as viewers that would justify a guy as closed-off and preoccupied as Loki falling head-over-heels for a girl he just met. Their was no explanation, no big revelation, no reasoning, it justā¦ kinda happened. And Iām also severely skeptical of any love story that has the characters go in this deep after only 3 45-minute episodes of exposition.
Iām sure thereās other stuff, so if anyone thinks of anything, let me know and Iāll be more than happy to add it. Tagging @janetsnakehole02 @raifenlf @natures-marvel and @brightredsunset800 for expressing interest. This is all your faults.

Ok so this is the third time that I'm sending you an ask tonight. (or is it night time in your country?) I'm being annoying right now but whatever. So I've been cackling about those salt fics you wrote because they are just amazing. I have a request, though it is up to you to write it or not. So, can you write a salt fic where someone got an interview with Ladybug (probably Aurore) and then they ask her why they replaced the old heroes like Rena Rouge, Carapace and etc. and LB is just like I don't work with dumb shits or somethin'. Then there is also a new Black Cat (Probably Luka, Felix, or Damian) because Adrien here is an asshole and this fic is saltier than salt water. Then LB also insults Alya's blog and their school. Those foolish mortals get some lawsuits and the rest is up to you. (This request is probably messed up since it's already midnight here and I can't sleep.)
You're never annoying, I just apologize that it took me so long to get to you. I do hope you don't hold it against me, darling.
A one on one interview with Ladybug was basically unheard of if you weren't the Ladyblog or Nadja Chadwick. Ladybug had made it firm that she wasn't a celebrity, she was a hero. She wasn't there for clout, for attention, for fame or fortune. She just wanted to keep Paris safe.
That's was Aurore admired about her. And why she felt queasy as she sat across from the heroine, who had given her of all people an interview. But she got ahold of herself, taking deep breaths as the cameraman began counting down. And when he hit 'one', she put on her best smile and straightened in her seat.
"Hello Paris! Welcome back to 'Latest Buzz'! I am your lovable host, Aurore BeaurƩal. Today I am here with a very, very special guest, our very own heroine of Paris; Ladybug!"
Ladybug beamed right at the camera, but gave a shy little wave, giving away the nerves she obviously had.
"Now, Ladybug, I'm so glad you requested to be on the show. You know, I initially thought I had misheard when Estelle told me. Usually you're not big on personal interviews." Aurore gave her full attention to Ladybug, but keeping the bright, friendly smile and perfect posture.
"Well, I tried a few times actually. But when I did, none of them were really great experiences." Ladybug admitted and both girls immediately thought of that disastrous Face-to-Face interview. It left a bitter taste in their mouths. "My issue is that misinformation has been spread around a lot recently. It's made me realize that I need to find more trustworthy sources."
"Ladybug. I vow on my integrity as a host and Estelle's reputation as a journalist that we are people who research facts. We don't ambush our guests, we respect them." She said, placing a hand on her heart. Ladybug saw an honesty in her eyes that she hadn't seen in such a long time. It honestly made her feel.. Respected. "Now, Ladybug.. We both know you have a lot of fans. A lot of admirers. False information can be spread so easily these days, which sources specifically are you telling people to avoid?"
"Well.. With Face-to-Face, I found that I was entirely ambushed in that interview. I wanted to speak about my hero work, but instead Nadja kept trying to needle her way into my personal life. That picture she had shown in largely out of context; when Dark Cupid attacked and Chat Noir was under his spell, it was the only way to get him free."
"Yes, I remember watching that. I'll be honest Ladybug, I felt bad for you." Aurore bit her lip, but smiled a bit when Ladybug nodded. "I mean, Chat Noir wasn't helping either. He seemed to be trying to push this narrative forward that you two are a couple."
"And we're not!" Ladybug burst out before she could stop herself. Everyone in that studio could hear the utter stress and frustration in her voice. "I've begged and begged Chat Noir to stop with the flirting, the 'telling people we're dating', everything! I just wanted him to focus and he couldn't seem to do that!"
"Is that why you replaced him? Because of his slacking off and refusing to take anything seriously?" Aurora sat up an bit straighter, her eyes going wide.
".. Not exactly, no. It was a bunch of issues that eventually piled up and boiled over." Ladybug made some gestures with her hands, trying her hardest to find the words but just letting out a long and pained sigh in the end. "I do enjoy my new partner now. He is more serious, more stable. I know he won't go off and pout if I deny something he wanted. I needed an entirely new team, as a matter of fact."
"Well I am going to say, on behalf of everyone here, that we're glad. We swear on our integrity as journalists that if such rumours were to ever surface again, we will do our proper research." Aurore beamed and many of the staff and crew behind the cameras nodded and gave Ladybug their thumbs up. Honestly, it warmed Ladybug's heart to see such support.
When had been the last time someone had supported her like this? Sure, her parents supported her, but her friends..? Her peers? No, none of them had supported her in a long time.
"Speaking of research, I'd say to stay away from the Ladyblog." It burned to say it but it had to be said. Alya had crossed so many lines it wasn't even forgivable at this point. She had gone too far, had betrayed too many.
"Wait, what?" Aurore nearly jumped out of her seat but quickly composed herself, taking a deep breath. "Pardon me Ladybug, but the Ladyblog has been a vital source of information since the very beginning."
"And I'm not denying that!" Ladybug quickly held up her hands, her eyes desperate now. "But please let me explain. The Ladyblog was amazing in the beginning, but like all things, it started to go astray. It was things like trying so hard to find out my identity. Trying to push that narrative of that whole superhero couple thing.. Ladyblogger Alya CĆ©saire has proven time and time again that she is not trustworthy. I mean, I thought she was my biggest fan. Why does she keep pushing my words aside?"
Many people who watched the interview would agree. If you idolized someone, respected someone, truly looked up to them.. Why would you push aside their words, their wishes to try and push the narrative you're so convinced is true, but isn't there?
"And don't get me started on the whole Lila Rossi craze she seemed to be on now." At Ladybug's mention of Lila Rossi, both Estelle and Aurore had to keep from rolling their eyes. They knew all about the girl.
"You speak as if you are quite frustrated, Ladybug. What an odd reaction to your best friend." Aurore leaned forward a bit in her seat. Everyone else got to the edge of theirs. Ladybug only shook her head, looking utterly defeated.
"That's the thing, she isn't my best friend." It took everything to keep from satin that she hated her, that she had taken away her friends and her life. "The only times she's met Ladybug is when she's been akumatized, which has been around six or seven times at this point. And the other things she's claiming are so outlandish! Saving Jagged Stone's kitten from a airport runway? Clara Nightengale stealing her dance moves? And the Ladyblog just posts it out there, claiming every single story is true. I'm just scared that people are taking this one hundred percent seriously. That's why I had to drop Rena Rouge and Carapace from the team as they believed Lila Rossi over me. They didn't even try to confirm these rumours! And it hurts to think that one day, someone will take Lila's words seriously and get hurt. What if she says it's safe to dip strawberries in bleach? Or tells someone that she found a way to tame some kind of wild animal? Someone would get hurt because they believe her story and try it out for themselves!"
"My goodness, I can definitely see how that is a problem. Misinformation is very easy to spread thanks to the internet, so you being worried is a very relatable thing." Aurore nodded, then tilted her head ever so slightly. "Ladybug, do you know anyone who has taken her word seriously? This is besides the Ladyblog of course."
Ladybug closed her eyes briefly, mentally debating with herself before finally giving in. These things needed to be said.
"CollĆØge FranƧois DuPont. Now I wasn't there personally, but I heard about this situation and looked into it. The entire situation was appalling. Apparently a student was found to have cheated, assaulted another student, and commited thievery. But the thing that stuck out is only one person saw her do all of these things; Lila Rossi. No investigation was done, no questioning other students. This student was then expelled immediately. Her teacher and her principal didn't even give her a chance. And from what people have been saying, Miss Rossi's behaviour is actively encouraged in that school. She misses countless days, no, months of school, claiming she's traveling. But when she was supposedly in Achu, doing whatever it was she was claiming with Prince Ali, I was fighting her akuma here in Paris on Heroes Day!"
"I was at school the day that happened. I knew the student that happened to. They're the nicest person in that school! Never a bad thing to say about anyone, always willing to help! I agree with you on how things were handled, it's a level of incompetence that is baffling." Aurore's hands slowly curled into fists as she remembered it all. She slowly shook her head. "The principal, their teacher, their class who backed up Rossi. It must have hurt them so much, made them feel so alone."
"That's why I want people to be more careful with what information they take as fact. It's so important, because stuff like that can lead people to a desperate place. They feel alone, like the entire world is against them. I wouldn't have let the principal and the teacher get away with that gross negligence in their jobs." Ladybug leveled her gaze directly to the camera. "People of Paris, please listen to what I am saying. I am here to be a hero, to protect you from the terror of Hawkmoth and to defeat him. But please, do not be like Principal Damocles, do not be like that teacher and her class at DuPont. Do your research, look up your facts. Do not let a liar lead you to do something dangerous and hurt yourself as well as others. Respect each other, talk and be honest. I swear on my life that I shall do the same. You are the people I swore to protect and I love. I am saying this all to protect you. And I'll hope you'll all forgive me for not protecting you sooner."
...
The interview rocked Paris. Ladybug speaking so openly about her frustrations, about the discrepancies in the Ladyblog and Lila Rossi had many people double checking the sources of everything they learned from that blog.
Alya could barely show her face as she made her way though the school hallways. Her reputation as a journalist had gone down the drain. People had basically started boycotting her blog, harrassing her, or trash talking her on other forums and sites. Even a lot of news outlets picked this up.
What hurt the most from that interview last night was Ladybug's words towards her, both as Rena Rouge and as Alya. Surely the heroine had to be mistaken, she had never beytrayed Ladybug! And that Oblivio incident, it was just to show Chat Noir and Ladybug that they were meant to be together!
Her family was upset with her. No, upset was too tame of a word. They were pissed.
"I can't believe she lied to us.."
"Well what do you expect from someone who keeps harrassing Ladybug?"
Alya flinched when she heard the whispers and rushed into Miss Buster's class. The entire class was there, all seated, all looking utterly miserable. Many of them looked as if they had been crying all night. A lot like she had.
"W-where's Miss Bustier?" Alya asked when she eyed the empty desk. Many of her classmates shot her glares, but didn't say anything about the interview last night. After all, they had no room to talk.
"She and Principal Damocles are with the school board now. We're getting a new teacher." Adrien was the one that spoke up. He looked utterly miserable. So unlike his usual self.
"Lila isn't coming back. She was pulled from school when her mother found out what happened." Alix muttered from her seat, arms crossed and shoulders hunched.
The class went quiet as they all internally contemplated how things had gotten like this. Their eyes focused on the door when it abruptly opened and Marinette came strolling in, carrying a box.
"Good morning everyone!" She said brightly, pretending not to notice the downcast expressions on their faces. She set the box on the teacher's desk before she turned towards them. "Oh? What's wrong everyone?"
".. Did you not watch the interview with Ladybug on 'Latest Buzz'?" Alya stared at Marinette, a bit dumbfounded by her friend's lack of awareness of the situation. She had been expecting Marinette to rush in with support and a fiery vengeance against those who had humiliated her best friend, maybe even a fresh pastry. But instead she was greeted with empty hands and a cheerful hello?
"Oh, well I haven't really had the time to watch much television. I mean, with my transfer papers, needing to plan out my new schedule with all of those new classes. Busy as a bee, that's me!" Marinette just beamed, giving Adrien a playful wink that had his stomach churning.
"Wait, transfering?" It was Rose that spoke up, her large eyes seeming impossibly large now. "Transfer what?"
"To my new school, of course." Marinette giggled and clasped her hands together. "I start on Monday."
"New school?!" Alya was on her feet and rushing towards Marinette. The others quickly followed, crowding around her. "What do you mean new school?! When did you ever say you were going to a new school?"
Marinette blinked, as if stunned, then tilted her head ever so slightly.
"I told you all last week, don't you remember?" Marinette tapped her lower lip, seeming to be wracking her brain before she abruptly snapped her fingers. "Oh! I forgot, you all were deep in conversation with Lila about her upcoming event with Jagged Stone and Clara Nightengale. You know, the one she said she'd be attending with Ladybug, since they're such good friends. Did she ever say how it went?"
All of the students shifted uneasily, suddenly seeming to refuse to meet her face.
Alix murmured something so barely audible, Marinette held a hand to her ear and leaned closer.
"I'm sorry, what was that?"
"Lila was lying to us!" Alix snapped as her cheeks went a flaming red.
"About everything! She never knew Jagged Stone!" Juleka spat out in fury.
"Or Prince Ali!" Rose sniffled.
"And she wasn't friends with Ladybug? They were barely acquaintances!" Alya wailed out as tears welled up in her eyes.
But Marinette hardly reacted the way they were expecting. She just gave them a small smile and nodded.
"Oh, yeah. I know."
Alya sucked in a breath sharply.
"You knew..? But why did you never..?"
"Oh Alya, you silly forgetful thing. I told you the day she returned from her long 'trip', remember? I told you she was lying." Marinette gave Alya a smile that said 'oh you silly thing'. "But you told me that I should really check my sources. And I got tired of trying to bring up any lies, since that was always your response. So I decided to just stop. I mean, since you're such an inspiring, honest journalist you must double and triple check every source you come across and found every story to be true!"
Alya flinched and looked away, feeling the churning feeling in her gut again. No, the Ladyblog had been the only source for the stories. The. Only. One.
"And I'm sure all of you knew what you were doing! I mean, it makes sense; trusting the words of a complete stranger over someone you've known for a while now. Some of you since we were in diapers!" She focused her gaze on Nino and Kim, who had the grace to at least look ashamed.
"Marinette, you really should-" Adrien began, reaching out for the girl, but was cut off by her clapping her hands together.
"But it's alright! I decided that fighting with you all wasn't worth it, so I took Adrien's advice and took the high road! Don't bother exposing Lila, she isn't hurting anyone!" Marinette announced brightly, giving her hands a little wave.
The temperature in the classroom dropped by several degrees.
".. Adrien, she's kidding, right?" Nino glanced over at his friend, his eyes pleading for him to deny it all. But the sight of the blood draining from the model's face and the sweat starting to bead at his forehead told him everything he needed to know. "Dude.."
"How could you?! You knew this entire time and didn't even try to tell me?!" Alya rounded on Adrien, fury in her eyes.
"Now, now, don't get mad at Adrien. I'm sure he knew you all were going to do you research. Besides, it's not like this did anything bad for anyone." Marinette pressed a hand to her cheek, still grinning. "I mean, it's not like you all took her advice without doing any research. You didn't try the things she suggested without actually checking them out to be true, right? No one lost any scholarships or job opportunities. No one's relationships were ruined. No one was hurt."
The nauseous feeling spread to all of the class as the reality of everything caught up with them.
"I'm sure everything will go back to normal, right? I mean, I'm sure that that woman from the education bureau isn't here to fire Damocles and Bustier for their severe neglect in their duties. Expelling me with the most mediocre and shaky proof. Surely that's a school I should feel safe in! That I should be proud to be a part of. But alas, my preparations for my new school are already done, so oh well."
Marinette shrugged and adjusted her purse strap.
"Anyhow, I wish you all luck with the amazing things Lila has helped you to do! I know it must have been worth ignoring me and convincing me I was crazy. With all of the free time I've had, with you guys practically replacing me with Lila in the group, I've had tons of time to spend with my boyfriend."
"Boyfriend?!" Alya's eyes went owlishly wide as she gaped at Marinette. "But what about Adrien?!"
"Oh Alya, I fell out of love with Adrien forever ago." Marinette shook her head in an almost patronizing way that had Alya's cheeks burning with embarrassment. They didn't even pay attention to Adrien's noises of surprise. "I mean, you claimed I was jealous of Lila getting close to Adrien, that I should let the jealousy go. And you know what? You were right! So I decided Adrien wasn't worth the stress, the embarrassment.. I mean, I couldn't even talk to him straight. I thought he was the most perfect guy in the world! Goodness, did I learn my lesson!"
She giggled as if she found the entire thing amusing. She then beamed at the class.
"Well, ta-ta! I need to get back home and make sure everything is ready to go. I wish you all the best, I really do!"
They all watched, shellshocked as Marinette breezed out of the classroom like it was nothing. Like she wasn't leaving her friends, her school, her life behind. And they all would wonder exactly how badly they screwed up, if she could walk away do easily, without a care.

Do you have any composition tips? :O your drawings are always such a complete scene
Thank you so much!!! If I had to boil it down to one piece of advice, itād be to embrace the planning stage and treat composition like its own thing. Whatever else you think gives your art its charm, leave that to the side until youāve Ā found a composition that tells the story all on its own and then let colours/shading/lighting, poses, expressions, symbols, brush strokes etc etc reinforce that.Ā Itās funny and very flattering to be asked about composition because it was something I neglected for a long time - actually the whole reason I started TIZ was because I wanted to focus on that and improve. I also picked black and white specifically because I had a habit of using colour and shading towards the end of the process to make up for how Iād neglected the planning/sketch phase.
Especially with the first arc I illustrated, I also tried to keep the line art very simple (simplified character designs, limited amount of details) to force the composition alone to either make or break the piece.
I failed a lot! Hereās some examples so you can learn from my mistakes:
1) Perspective.
The flat angle of the background doesnāt frame the characters, doesnāt lead the eye to what should be the focus (Magnus pulling Jenkinsā bow tie) and also doesnāt allow for enough depth to accurately show the shape and size of the interior. Hereās where a one point perspective could have made all the difference.Ā
2) Placement of the figures.Ā
Thereās no clear focus in this picture and a big part of the problem is that all four characters are basically at an equal distance from the viewer. By placing Taako and Merle in the foreground and Magnus and Tom Bodette in the middle ground, itās clearer that theyāre actually interacting in pairs, and also which pair weāre supposed to give most of our attention to.
3) Values.
Itās a little hard to understand whatās happening in this picture and thatās because itās not taking enough advantage of contrasting values to group areas together and show whatās important by making it stand out. (This is definitely an example of a piece - and thereās many of them - where I just refused to think in black and white and instead barrelled ahead as if I was planning to bring it all together with colour - donāt ask me why! Old habits die hard.) A good rule of thumb is to group objects in the foreground using one value, which then contrasts with a very different value for the background (and perhaps a third for the middle ground). The more contrast in an area, the more it will stand out.
This advice is just as important for pieces in full colour and I would really recommend making a value sketch before picking out colours - the extra elements you add to a piece are only as strong as the foundation theyāre resting on. Iād be happy to make a little tutorial on value sketches if thereās interest!
Itās really exciting to see how far Iāve developed when it comes to composition and Iām so eager to learn more. Kās criticism has helped immensely and Iāve often pushed myself to pick ideas I felt were beyond my technical reach. Some of the drawings from TIZ Iām proudest of didnāt look so good to me even as I finished them and thatās why Iām proud - I went for something complicated and sticking the landing was less important than taking that risk!
In addition to the three things I discussed above, here are some questions I like to ask to help myself along the way:
If I zoom out/almost close my eyes, can I still make out what the piece is meant to portray? Is the silhouette(s) instantly clear?
Do the lines/shapes/gestures lead the eye towards the important part(s) of the piece?
Am I using the canvas to its fullest? If an area looks empty, is that emptiness saying something or have I just made a badly balanced composition? (Same with a ānoisyā area - am I afraid to let the illustration breathe?)
Can I push the contrasts further? Contrast in values, in shapes and sizes, in detail/noise vs pure black or white?
What does the perspective do for the tone and would another angle work better? (I generally play it safe with perspective for TIZ since the classic childrenās book illustration vibe Iām going for is usually quite restrained, but I still try to experiment with my initial sketches.)
I hope some of this is helpful! Please let me know if anything is unclear or if thereās any area of composition (or anything else) youād like me to dive deeper into. I love talking about basically every part of this craft! So thank you again for giving me an excuse to chat about it :D Also please check out my Patreon or consider giving me a tip on Ko-Fi! Iām out of work because of disabilities so it would help a lot! The links are in the bio because I know tumblr doesnāt like external links in posts.
