Hi! I found your post on the growing hate toward Snape really thought provoking. Just curious are you planning to write a second part? I’d be super interested to see where you take it.

When I first started writing this post, I actually planned for it to be a four part series. I wanted to go into how Snape’s genuine, pure love turned into an obsessive and somewhat dark emotion, or how he went from a strict, harsh teacher to someone whose behavior borders on criminal mistreatment of children. But honestly, I think there are far better posts out there that explain these transformations with much more clarity and depth. Since these shifts are often influenced by cultural perspectives, I worry my explanations might not come across as clearly. For instance, the concept of an 'incel' isn’t something commonly understood in my culture, so it’s hard for me to frame it accurately.

However, if you're interested, I did briefly touch on this in a reblog of this post, where I talked about how what was meant to represent Snape’s innocence, loyalty, and his ‘light side’ has, over time and with cultural shifts, been interpreted differently.. I came across a comment on Reddit under a post I wrote about Snape's hate, which I thought was really interesting, and I'd like to share it here as well:

There was significantly less Snape hate during that time but also the quality was different. People hated Snape for his actual behavior and flaws and not exaggerated or made up things. And some people just loved to hate on him because mean teacher dungeon bat with his billowing cloak and drama is so easy to make a caricature of for laughs though I don't think those people in particular hated on him very seriously. And most telling about the time was that people who hated on Snape didn't automatically like Sirius, James, or Remus. Many people hated all across the board or maybe only liked 1 marauder but not the others and that was usually Sirius, sometimes Remus, but never James. I think we also need to consider the emergence of incel as a term widely used followed by social justice warriors and edge lords as part of internet culture and then more recently the anti v pro culture which is particularly targeted towards fandom. These shifts in perspective have over time influenced the fandom significantly imo. Particularly fans who are 30 and under seem most influenced in this way. Snape hate went from "I really don't like him but you do you" to vocal attacks on him as a character in a performative moral clout grabbing way similar to the SJWs with the mix of "he's an incel so he must be every possible kind of bigot and very creepy and a threat to women". The Rise in James' popularity felt very edge Lord when it started of bad faith arguments for why a guy who very obviously isn't so great is actually great. And then with the Anti v pro ship drama that is in every single fandom now it has become the norm to chalk certain questionable characters up to being pure evil and anyone who likes said characters is clearly also a horrible person and a predator.

kokomi: you see? he was a drama youtuber and he got clout off of ruining other people's lives - he even got fired from genshin impact! when genshin threatened a lawsuit, he agreed to settle privately by deleting all his accounts. genshin must have paid to scrub all the traces of him they could from the internet too. i knew there was something fishy about him!

Since the moment your relationship with Christian went public, you’ve been receiving a lot of mixed reactions. Some are positives, and some are negatives. Dating a famous professional athlete was never in your book, but somehow you met and fell in love with him despite his job and status. Besides, you can’t really control who you love can you? You didn’t care that he’s famous nor will you ever, because it didn’t matter. What truly matters is the genuine love shared between the two of you.

No, you’re not a celebrity. You weren’t famous at all. You work nowhere near the media or even football. You’re just someone ‘ordinary’. You randomly met him at a bar in London during a night-out with your girlfriends – one went to a college in London, and you happened to be in the city to visit her. You knew who Christian was but you didn’t want to freak him out so you tried to act cool, and before you knew it he asked for your number. From there on, the rest is history.

Days before you two went ‘Instagram official’, you were already so anxious about how people were going to react. You know he has a lot of fans, and they could be pretty ruthless with their comments. They basically could get away with anything, since they could create any persona they wanted and stayed anonymous on the internet, which was and still is terrifying to even think about. You didn’t want to hear people talking shit about your relationship, but at the same time you knew it was sort of inevitable. You two wanted to keep it lowkey, but didn’t want to hide it from the world. After long talks and careful considerations, you both decided to go public.

You couldn’t be grateful for the support people have given you, but negative comments about you and your relationship sometimes would mess with your head.

You’ve been trying to ignore those awful comments, but since you’re not used to the attention, it was hard not to think about those things they’d said. You knew they’re nothing but strangers on the internet, but you couldn’t stop thinking to yourself: what if everything they said was true? Am I not good enough for Christian? Does this relationship not make sense? Are we not going to last?

Christian has been very protective of you, and he’s told you so many times to just ignore everything. He’s been reassuring you that those internet trolls have no idea what they’re talking about.

“Y/N, love... Stop. Just stop looking at those comments.” He took your phone, locked the screen, and put it away. 

“You are perfect for me, Y/N, they just don’t know that. God, you’re fucking amazing! Believe me, if they got to know you, they would take their words back.”

You shrugged and shook your head while looking down, “You’re my boyfriend, of course you’d say that.”

His brows knitted as he let out a sigh, “No, that’s not true! Even if I wasn’t, I’d definitely say what I said. Why can’t you see it?”

“Christian...” You paused, “do you think our relationship is going to last? I mean, I love you...” You were fidgeting your fingers, hesitated a little to continue because you were afraid of how he was going to react. 

“But I- I just... I don’t think I’m good enough for you,” you whimpered.

“Excuse me?”

You took a deep breath, still avoiding eye contact, “maybe they were right, Chris. You deserve bet-”

“No,” he cut you off before you even finished what you were saying, “don’t even think about it. I wouldn’t have asked you to be my girlfriend if I didn’t think we’re going to last. There is- hey, look at me,” as he lifted up your chin, your eyes met his beautiful chocolate eyes, “there is no one else that fits me better but you, Y/N. You are my one and only. If anything, you are way out of my league.” 

You blushed, trying not to giggle but you couldn’t help it. “Dammit Pulisic, you really have a way with words don’t you?”

He grinned, he was pleased to hear your cute little giggle. “I’m the luckiest fucking guy,” he said before he leaned closer to you, his lips was gently pressed against yours for a moment, then he whispered, “I still couldn’t believe you are mine.”

That man really swept you off your feet. You have never experienced this kind of love before. Every single day with him feels like heaven. When it’s just the two of you, it feels like the world revolves around you – nothing else matters but you and him. He is the only man you’ve ever had late night talks with – well, it’s mostly late night for him because you live in the States and you’re like 5 hours behind him. Hell, you both dropped the L bomb to one another a month into your relationship – your friends thought it was way too fast, but the truth is it wasn’t. You had never been so sure about any man ever, and you just knew Christian is different – special, one-of-a-kind. 

Before no one acknowledged you, you felt a lot freer. You didn’t have to worry about how others would perceive you or judge you. Now, people are watching your every move, ready to bring up even the tiniest mistake you made just because you’re dating their favorite footballer. You became very self-conscious, and Christian noticed that. He felt guilty because he thought because of him you had to go through this and he knew you didn’t deserve any of the horrible judgements, but he’s never stopped giving you the reassurance you needed. At one point, he wanted to post something on Instagram to defend you, however you told him not to so he didn’t do it.

“Baby...” as he held your hands, “honestly, I just want the world to know you’re mine. I’m sorry that I’ve caused you any trouble, but I don’t want you to worry ‘cause I’m always here for you. They don’t know shit about us, they really don’t...”

“I know Chris, I know. I just, um... I need time to get used to this, you know? This is the risk I have to take to be with you, and I will eventually find my way around it.”

He smiled and nodded, he understood how you were feeling. “Let’s just keep things between us, yeah? It’s more than enough that they now know we’re together. Who cares, right?”

You laughed a bit, “Yeah, I guess you’re right.”

“I just want you to know... You’re it for me.” He kissed the top of your head, then rested his forehead against yours. “I love you, Y/N. Now and forever.”

Your cheeks turned bright red and the biggest smile appeared on your face. “I love you, Christian.”

1. Stop Idolizing Creative People.

Erase these lines. Erase them. Please.

All people are creative people. That is part of what it means to be "people". Human beings. Humane. We all have something to say and we are trying desperately to say it. If we go unheard, we die. Our individual humanity dies. Knowledge of our existence dies. Eventually, we literally die. All our thoughts and experiences become worm food. We're gone. You lost us. Sometimes, someone with a little more clout will find our work in a U-Store-It and you'll find a piece of us after we're gone, but probably not. Vincent and Emily got lucky - if you wanna call that lucky.

And "successful [emphasis mine] creative people"? Did you just create something? You like it like that? You done? Well, there, you succeeded, you're successful. Creation is about more than just the work itself, though, I'm with you there. Successful creative people have their work seen, and they have enough resources to live, recharge, and keep creating. Everything else that this broke-ass fake meritocracy heaps on your head is meant to jack up that pedestal to such an extent that it looks utterly unattainable to someone with their feet on the ground. That keeps them quiet.

And if you're ON the pedestal? Oh, my god, look how far you have to fall. Look at all the pain and sacrifice it took to get you there. Look how desperate and unhappy all those (less talented? less determined? less marketable?) people on the ground are. You worked so hard to earn this, you can't lose it. That keeps you producing. That keeps you profitable.

And when you die, it's cheap to replace you. Hell, they can pay someone to pick up your work right where you left off. There are so many people down there who crave a platform, any platform - and they crab-bucket each other instead of elevating each other, because the path to success they see is so narrow. There's no room for all these lesser beings on the pedestal, they have to weed each other out and compete to be noticed by some larger interest. Maybe the the folks on the pedestals, maybe the corporations that build the pedestals, but someone has to reach down. They can't climb up. They try every day and they can't.

Yeah. A lot of 'em just give up trying to be seen on their own merits. Maybe they reblog, repost and "like" the words of others for a little taste. Maybe they even fold their identities into yours, because you are seen and they can see you. Your words are close enough to what they'd say, if they had any hope of being heard. They put their hands on your pedestal and push it higher. They say, "Go. Go. Go." And some of 'em say, "I want to be like you. Just a little bit like you." And some of 'em are full-on singing "Creep" by Radiohead.

And that's fucking terrifying. Of course you don't want that. You've seen how fast building you up can flip to tearing you down when your voice stops saying the things they want you to say for them, too. So you look down and say, "Please, stop." But, if you didn't have the pedestal, they wouldn't hear you. You need the platform. You can't, you know, climb down and address them individually - there's too many of them.

You wanna know how hard it is to relate to individual human beings from up there? Well, let's say you see the words one of those human beings wrote, words that indicate they have folded their identity into yours to a frightening extent, words that they sent towards you because they thought you might like that. It might seem like a good idea to take those words to the top of your platform, where that person will see them, and lots of others will, too, and then use those words to make your own points. One of which is that these words are wrong and should not be said. (Let me assure you, this would not bother me so much if I hadn't seen it happen with another creator just recently! That is not your fault, OP! It's probably not their fault either! You can't help it!)

And maybe that person is so broken down and invisible that they're reading your words right now and going, "Yeah. That's fair. You can do that. I deserve it. I got seen. Cool." Or maybe they just quiet down and walk away.

It's real hard to rage from within the machine, ya get me? Especially if - even unconsciously - you accept that the machine needs to be there. Like, of COURSE there's a line between creative people and people who are not, and then another line between people who are just creative and the successful ones - that's a real, natural thing that exists. Not everyone has the innate ability. All you folks down there can be okay not being creative or successful, if that's all there is for you, right? Please? Why... Why am I still aspirational?

*sigh* My fellow human being(s), we can see you doing what we all want to do. Most of us don't crave it to that extent - probably even you don't want this much "success" - but we want it a little. We want to make something that has value, and see others value it. And every day we get told that we can't, we're not allowed, we're not good enough, we're just screwing around, if we want to have value we ought to get a real job and create what we're told to - but those folks on the pedestals have A VOCATION. And, yeah, if we happen to notice that one of the avatars of our repressed humanity is actually kind of a scumbag (or, god help you, if it just seems like you might be) we will have vengeance. We will have vengeance for your failure at a task you never wanted, don't deserve, and are trying to repudiate. That's kinda all we can do from down here - push you a little higher or tear you down, and nothing in between. We're not close enough to touch you. You see people above you that you can't touch, but we can't even reach you.

I speak with impunity because I have, like, four individual humans trying to push me up - on a good day. Probably OP (heh, just let me treat you like another Tumblrite) won't even see this, let alone think about it or touch a key that would give a response. he enters the room, aspirated from training, and obviously very sweaty— he just wants your touch at this point.

katsuki was always jumpy when it came to ‘spooky’ things, like that time he jumped during the test of courage in the training camp arc

so when he sees a slipper getting CHUCKED out from under the bed, exactly when he comes in the empty room— he JUMPS
