So two of my friends agreed to watch THK with me for my birthday, and one of them was looking up stuff about the BL industry in Thailand, and he claimed that it mostly existed to appeal to a western audience. What say ye? I do remember in a couple of shows it was referred to as Thailand's "soft power", which made sense to me given that I knew virtually nothing about Thailand before watching those shows, and now I can read and write in Thai and actually plan on visiting Thailand at some point. But the notion that the main purpose of the BL industry is to function as a soft power never occurred to me. Is that what those shows were referring to?

I actually have a blog post I have been working on for a while about this. Short answer is I don't think it started out that way but it certainly is now. The tourist board is often involved with BL which is a sure sign its a soft power (last I checked tourism was 13-15 % of Thailands GDP - that's HUGE).

That's one of the reason BLs almost always go to the beach and often, these days, also go to the mountains.

i think we should remind musicians they can absolutely make up little stories for their songs btw. it doesn’t have to be about them at all. you can invent a guy and put him in situations to music. time honoured tradition in fact.
