Some of my personal settings from my sci-fi dystopian series:

Abandoned factory that used to be run by a highly complex AI several generations ago, but it died when all its workers did, or did it? And is there something living inside that might have been a bit more organic than first anticipated? (I went the route of 'adopt the final worker who was the darling of the factory's eye and now my team has a mechanic, woo')

Sci-fi rich people decided the apocalypse was too apocalyptic and made a fancy-pants dome which is just like the old world, But BetterTM and uses holographic technology to function. (A La Incarceron)

On the topic of Incarceron - living prison, way great opportunities for different wings. Is the warden friend or foe, have the inmates really done anything wrong?

Sci-fi fancy people hotel with each floor being more bizarre and extravagant than the last. One floor is just a giant jacuzzi with those drinks with umbrellas, another is made entirely of crystal, etc.

Space, or even regular old marina and the weird boats (and folks) that inhabit the harbor.

Abandoned hospital that has ...never been picked over by scavengers, but it's in... oddly good shape. Despite the rumors that a great and ancient being inhabits it. (spoilers: it's a dragon)

Gilded age manor home that appears to be the ideal hideout to heal some wounds and regen some mana or whatever, it's not in terrible shape, but it's not suspiciously nice either. Maybe it was made into apartments. Anyway, your team holes up here for a few days until... the power starts to flicker and all of the sudden the whole place is entirely disintegrating under them. The objective? Make it to each room as the power travels in waves to avoid getting dead. might even find some sick loot along the way.

Not a place but a monster: time zombies. IDK what that means, but time zombies. Or void zombies. Or both. Sick.

Problem with making sci fi dungeons is coming up with places that aren't just military tech bases, research facilities, mines or abandoned space stations.

I have the entirety of modern life to pull from and I come up blank somehow.

idk maybe being quietly cancelled is the best thing that could've happened to Scumbag System. don't get me wrong, I think censorship of gay content just for being gay is wrong regardless, but MDZS' themes about how 'a rumour travels halfway across the world while the truth is lacing up its boots' and 'society looks for scapegoats to maintain the status quo and avoid criticism' and 'you must look for facts and exercise critical thinking even in the face of overwhelming groupthink' and TGCF's themes about how 'one person believing in you can change your whole life' and 'a single act of kindness can balloon into a world changing event' and 'having suffered is no excuse for perpetuating more suffering' and 'having dark impulses and moments of weakness does not make you a monster, its recognising wrong and trying to do better that's the important part' are all things that can carry to a new medium even if the relationships are not canonically romantic. it's definitely a loss, but something meaningful is still left. however SVSSS' central themes about how 'patriarchal standards placed on men since youth that they must be heterosexual, violent, vengeful, and domineering and suffering is foundational to manhood are extremely toxic and corrosive standsrds to honest emotional expression and fulfilment and actually being a malewife or gay or not holding social capital over others doesn't make you any less of a man ands might actual make you happier' don't really work if the characters and relationships must pass some Chinese government censor's standards about not promoting effeminacy in men, its actually kind of a slap in the face to what the story is about. to be fair I haven't seen/ read any adaptations of MDZS or TGCF in full, but from what I hear they're very well received by the fandom. idk maybe it's so late I'm spouting gibberish it's very late but

i honestly think wild blue yonder might be my least favorite donna episode (its been a while since i revisted season 4 so no promises but... im pretty confident) and whats getting me is its like they pulled the scary parts from stuff like waters of mars and midnight and then took out the things that make those episodes good which is the OTHER PEOPLE

OK. Tell them. Make it a teaching moment. Everyone who's in your movement learned the background from somewhere at some point, maybe this is that point for that person. Give them a jumping off point that they can dive into later.

OK. Then don't tell them. You don't have to be responsible for teaching people with a budding interest in your group the ins and outs and how-tos. That's fair and valid! It can be a lot of work. Someone else will handle it

OK. Then don't engage with them, if it's that bad. Maybe someone else will come around and tell them the history, maybe they'll pick it up on their own, maybe they'll just enjoy the fashion elements for awhile.

I feel like we have a few options here. People can either talk to them, share the history, share the values, share the praxis. Or they can just chase off anyone who even thinks about dipping a toe in their community, and then wonder why it's dying off later down the line.

I dunno, maybe I'm too naive and patient or whatever. But if people are entering your -punk spaces without knowing The Rundown of what you feel they need to know, maybe being nice about it and informing people instead of immediately assuming stupidity and malicious intent could help you make a new friend. Even the loudest voices in a space had to learn from somewhere, and not everyone has the luxury of being in the space as the History was Happening--whether it's an age thing or a not being aware of the space thing. Or maybe I just don't see what the big deal is behind people hating people who like the aesthetic of something and don't know the behind the scenes history about it yet.

Because I believe in the word 'yet.' No one comes into this world knowing everything about everything, and we're all constantly learning new things. I'm not gonna degrade someone and call them a poser for not knowing what I know. Because if it were me, interested in a scene but getting chased out and called a poser? I wouldn't hit the books and study up, I'd go 'that fuckin sucks, those people sucked' and then avoid anyone and anything having to do with it.

So chase people off and call them posers if you want. But if your community starts dwindling, don't be fucking shocked.

The fact that the doctor didn't go to the biological mother, let her walk away, didn't need to find that information, is so...

My mom was a single mother for a few years, because my bio father didn't stick around. My dad is the one she married, the one who raised me, the one who celebrates adoption day with me.

My biological father tried to get in touch with me when I turned 19 and I told him to fuck off (well, i didn't respond so my mom did with my permission), because he's not my dad. I (probably) have hyposmia (extremely weak/flakey sense of smell) and I'm always happy when Jackson finds a way to bring up the fact that Gregor has anosmia (no sense of smell)

Ep 193, Gregor comments that he's self-conscious about possibly smelling bad, because he can't check himself. He turns down a flower hes been told has a bad smell, and asks Ashe to check that he smells okay

I had to pause the video because that's something I worry about every day!! Down to "avoiding things I've been told smell bad because I won't be able to tell if the smell gets on me," which is a massive concern of mine! Asking friends/family to double check you smell okay!! I do that!!!!!

I don't know if Jackson himself has a smelling disorder, did some research, or just thought about how not having a sense of smell would impact Gregor. Either way, I love how it's been handled so far. It feels really cool :]
