The thing about Aaron being a recovering addict while also trying to become a doctor is that eventually he's going to have to confront his past. Eventually, he's going to have to face himself.
Imagine him as medical intern, tending to a record high of overdosed addicts flooding the ER during the second wave of the opioid epidemic in the 2010's. How would he feel, seeing where his life could have ended, over and over again, were it not for Andrew's twisted idea of an intervention?
Imagine him later, as a resident, working long shifts and barely sleeping, constantly surrounded by the temptation of the very same pills he would have shoved down his throat in seconds at fifteen years old. Imagine with each pain pill prescription he writes, he is back on that bathroom floor, sweating out sickness and hatred as he begs to be let out, the cold tile like ice against his cheek.
Imagine his past addiction being a greater stain on his record as an attending surgeon than the fact that he's killed someone. People still sometimes die in his OR - it's the nature of the beast, of trying to save lives - but Aaron can never swallow another pill.

WHY UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS ARE JUST AS UNLIKELY AS EVER, UNFORTUNATELY
I'm a leftist (Libertarian-Socialist), who votes progressive, because I live under an "elected" government, and I had thought I had purged the MSNBC/CNN Nation from my friends list, but apparently not, as my timeline is just chock-full of media-driven hysteria over current events, so here's a primer:
"Liberals" who think their arguments are clever or relevant to the Second Amendment are exhausting.
They are not the left; they are just one half of the good cop/bad cop act of the corporate owned fire-hose of bullshit that is the corporate media, and corporate America's governing criminal cartel/duopoly.
Both cults "I like simple and ineffectual 'solutions', because they make me feel like I'm doing something, and I'm just stinky with fear."
There are over a hundred million legal gun owners, who some want to punish for somebody else's crime.
Well, there are some things to consider.
We've been a heavily armed country since 1621, and yet the epidemic of daily mass-shootings didn't begin until 20 April 1999 (Columbine), at a time when gun ownership was at an all-time low, and five years after Clinton's assault-weapons ban, so maybe guns aren't the variable.
Worth noting: One of the first things the "Pilgrims" did when they betrayed the Native Americans, was disarm "King Phillip" and his men.
Maybe, just maybe, dead school-children are the price of the neoliberalism practiced under the "Washington Consensus" of BOTH right-wing authoritarian parties since the 1980's? When your country offers you no prospects, and you become terrified of the future, what then? Fear can make unstable people do desperate things. Add to that a culture of celebrity, and what could possibly go wrong?
Another factor that goes completely unexamined, is the way Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neill emptied our state hospitals onto our streets, and onto families ill-equipped to deal with the sometimes violent mentally ill.
Thank God, the "solution" is so simple…
Also, 84% of NRA members support universal background checks. The problem is, every time a bill comes up for a vote, Democrats add poison pill amendments guaranteeing defeat in the legislature (and the courts), and then they proceed to tell the TV cameras that "once again the GOP and the gun lobby have voted down background checks and defied the will of the people", or some such nonsense.
If you want to watch Dems sabotage universal background checks (while Republicans roll their eyes and face-palm) in real time, go here:
P.S. You can probably guess which one of these three groups I belong to (Hint: It's the one that's growing and actually decides elections):

LaborPartyNow!!!
P S The line, "You don't need 30 rounds to shoot a deer!" is not clever.
The Second Amendment has nothing to do with hunting tools, toys for hobbyists (target shooting), or even weapons for self-defense.
It's about ARMS!!!
It's about the individual citizen's right to arms, so they'll be prepared to join a militia, not the other way around. ‘Well regulated’ at that time, simply meant, ‘efficient.’ In other words, in order for a muster to be efficient, civilians needed to be already armed.
So the "collective rights" argument has a couple of problems that make it quite unhinged from history and reality.
1) As I've mentioned above, Americans have always been relatively heavily armed. How did that happen in a collective rights paradigm?
2) Contrary to what you were probably taught in school, by the time of the Confederate artillery barrage on Fort Sumter, the war over slavery had already been going on for over six years, and was fought entirely by independent volunteer militia's. Fort Sumter was just the beginning of official involvement by government troops. How did that happen in a collective rights paradigm?
3) In what universe do government forces need to have their right to arms protected?
4) Since when do National Guard members keep National Guard arms (Hint: they're kept at the armory, and have been since colonial times)?
5) Obviously, "Liberals" are stupid.
Again: #LaborPartyNow!!!
P P S That was ENTIRELY the point of the first fruits of dissent, the 10 Amendments we've come to call the BILL OF RIGHTS (which have become a beacon to aspiring democrats all over the world), to protect INDIVIDUALS from the government they had just created. #TrueStory

From My CuriousCat
"Headcanons for epidemics at the La Squadra home base? Maybe it's the flu season, or maybe it is mass food poisoning, - assassins are getting sick left and right. thoughts, vibes, scenarios?"
I will go with general sickness!
My very first thought was that Prosciutto recovers the quickest - not because he's healthy or his immune system is strong, but because he has no qualms about blasting himself repeatedly with The Grateful Dead until the virus/bacteria/etc. is purged from his system. He also uses The Grateful Dead to fumigate his apartment and any other place he passes through, so he is an extremely effective killer of air-borne diseases. The only problem is, no member of La Squadra is willing to let him use The Grateful Dead on them directly except for Gelato from time to time, which means they must suffer through their illnesses as best they can and Prosciutto is stuck going to the pharmacy and procuring food for them while they do that.
(Just imagine Prosciutto in a white suit with a red shirt underneath going about the base checking in on everyone and doing what he has to and that's basically my vision of La Squadra when ill, lmaooo.)
Risotto is usually very stout, but when he gets sick he's prone to lamenting his existence and his choices. Whether he's sick or not, though, he always feels like a furnace so sicker members will definitely congregate to him for warmth. Very grateful for any attention.
Pesci, like Risotto, is very resilient and often helps Prosciutto run errands for the sick and offers positivity at this trying time. When he gets sick, it really is just that bad. Whenever illness gets to him, he caves into the weakness and dissolves into a whining mess, but nobody can stay angry or annoyed with him for long, so it's fine.
Formaggio is the type that gets sick, tries to take care of himself, fails repeatedly, and finally they're like "JUST GO BACK TO BED, ASSHOLE!" and nurse him properly. Very cuddly when ill, and makes terrible jokes about it, so some patience is required.
Illuso gets one whiff of illness going about and he immediately retreats to the mirror world, locking out all germs. He has a pair of unused rubber gloves on his person at all times for such emergencies, and will reach out of the mirror wearing those if he needs anything. Will not help anyone, he's too worried about contracting their diseases despite technically having the means of purging himself with his ability. Old habits of wanting to get away from the nastiness of other people's sickness die hard.
Melone is already sickly, so if he gets sicker it's pretty much an emergency. Thankfully the others keep tabs on him and Baby Face laptop searching for pills around the living area is a good indicator that Melone needs help ASAP. A very patient sufferer, however, so despite his conditions, he is one of the easiest to look after.
Ghiaccio on the other hand is the angry sufferer. He hates life a lot but BOY does he fucking hate life if he's sick on top of it. Grumbles endlessly until he's hoarse. No comfort to anyone whatsoever. He's sometimes cared for in isolation because he makes the rest even more miserable.
Sorbet is only a notch below Ghiaccio because he also hates suffering and the unpleasant physical biproducts of illness, particularly clamminess and migraines. You would normally think of him as placid and nonchalant, but the moment he's down, he sours like vinegar and has a low but acrid rant locked and loaded for anyone who talks to him unnecessarily while he's languishing.
Meanwhile, Gelato absolutely refuses to be ill. Like Formaggio, he will take to self-medicating, but unlike Formaggio, he is more successful because 1) he is willing to ask Prosciutto to blast the culprits out of his system, and 2) before he ever asks Prosciutto, he will crawl to his cabinet, get the navy rum out, and swallow enough in one go to knock himself unconscious. Whenever he wakes up, he's usually almost back to normal. Everyone hates this.

UPDATE Ch 7: Another Song (a Dreamling RENT AU)
Tumblr media
Dream of the Endless/Hob Gadling || Rated E || in progress
Tags: Alternate Universe, Alternate Universe - Human, Alternate Universe - RENT, the Dreamling-as-RENT AU that no one asked for but Christmas made me do, takes place during the AIDS epidemic in NYC in the early-mid 1990s, Calliope/Dream (discussed), this fic is full of motherfucking artists, and they definitely don't have a dollar, gratuitous use of lines from RENT, because why be creative when you can steal from a genius like Jonathan Larson, HIV/AIDS Crisis, characters with HIV/AIDS, implied/referenced suicide, idiots in love, getting together, lives of queer starving artists in NYC early in the AIDS crisis and all the associated bullshit about money that goes with it, a character gets mugged, discussion of stealing, discussion of the death of a dog, YES IT WILL HAVE A HAPPY ENDING
Read Chapter 7 on AO3
While they laugh it off the beeping sound of a digital alarm slices through the night air – be bee beep, be bee beep – and Dream frowns, pulling his watch out of his pocket because he was pretty sure that he had another half hour before– The beeping stops and Dream snaps his head up to see Hob standing there with an uncomfortable look on his face as he puts a small black beeper back in his pocket and exchanges it for an even smaller silver box. “Sorry, I need the reminder to take my AZT.” Hob murmurs, pulling one pill out and swallowing it dry before returning it to his coat pocket. When he is done he stands with his chin up, almost like he is daring Dream to comment.

Chapter 20
“With investigations still underway, police have given school officials permission to reopen Mitakihara High. The tragic death and disappearances of several students have had parents concerned for the safety of the school, yet official insist that the incidents are unrelated and isolated, and are simply part of Mitakihara City’s growing trend of missing persons cases, mysterious deaths and suicides.”
The news report droned on, becoming white noise in the background as Koharu read and reread the messages from both Shinju and Hanako. The truth would never be reported officially, but Koharu still had the closure of knowing. Rui Tomatsu was dead, and permanently this time. Chiemi Takahata and Akari Fueki were also both dead, with only Chiemi having a body to bury.
Rui’s death was officially ruled a suicide in the end, and Chiemi and Akari’s would likely follow the same trend. As the news had said, Mitakihara faced an epidemic of such cases over the last few years. While anyone could be a victim, it was noted by city officials that it was primarily younger women who vanished. Some left bodies, some did not. It was a part of a forbidden truth that Koharu was now privy to, but could never report on. The secret of Magical Girls must be maintained, lest this tragedy spread even further.
It was a bitter pill to swallow, but Koharu felt secure enough in knowing for herself. No one would believe her anyway, the danger of the knowledge aside. Still, she had her friends. They survived their encounter with Rui Tomatsu, and they, too, now carried an undeniably painful burden of their own truths.
Magical Girls who face unbearable despair, or who go too long without cleansing their Soul Gems become the very Witches they made contracts with Kyubey to fight against. Neither Shinju nor Hanako knew this fact before making their wishes, yet in their conversation with Koharu, both agreed to fight on, despite this horrible truth. In that sense, Koharu felt even more of a bond between herself and her friends. No one before had been able to truly know how Koharu felt, but in carrying impossible, unbearable truth, the Newspaper Club would stand together to weather any storm.
Koharu’s train of thought is interrupted by the knocks reverberating through her house from the front door. “Could’ve knocked quieter,” Koharu mumbled as she stood up, “house isn’t that well built.” She made her way to the front door, opening it and gazing upon the faces of the two school counselors. “…Nagano. Sakurauchi. What are you doing here?”
Nagano stepped into the house, with Koharu backing off to give her room to enter. “We have a serious problem on our hands, Koharu. Regarding Rui Tomatsu’s suicide. We have reason to believe that your handling of the school paper contributed to this horrible tragedy.”
Without flinching, Koharu crossed her arms, staring down the head counselor. “Evidence?”
Clenching her fists, Nagano took another step forward, continuing as if Koharu hadn’t said anything. “So effective immediately, we have no choice but to suspend the Newspaper—”
“If anything pushed that girl to end her life, it’d be you two. Framing students to get out of inconvenient situations. Like what you did with that Toi girl. Right, counselors?” Hikari Shirahara stepped out from the kitchen, entering the living room and standing right beside Koharu, arms also folded across her chest. “Your number one track star breaks her ankle in a freak accident, and instead of letting your backup compete, you lash out. The papers would eat this up, you know.”
“How dare you?! You have no proof—”
“Just like they would eat up a story about school staff trying to do the same to a neurodivergent girl. And in that regard, we have all the proof we need.” This time, Katsumi Sasaki’s voice rang out, and she emerged from the kitchen as well. She pushed her glasses up along the bridge of her nose, staring down the counselors as she stood on Koharu’s other side. “Surveillance cameras within a private domicile is perfectly legal, you know, and any such recordings are admissible evidence in a court of law. Assuming, of course, you wish to pursue this action to its conclusion. But forgive me, you were saying something? About Koharu’s Newspaper Club?”
Nagano’s face went pale, but before she could come up with anything to say, Hikari interjected. “You two should really quit while you’re ahead. You know. While you still -can- quit.”
“Is that a threat?!” Nagano had somehow found the words in an instant, but her face showed the proof of her defeat. She knew what was coming next before Koharu’s mother could even say it.
“Resign. Both of you. If you do not, you run a clear risk of continuing your history of retaliation.” Katsumi stepped forward, glaring into Nagano’s eyes as she leaned in, speaking just audibly enough to be heard by all in the room, but otherwise speaking just above a whisper. “Because who knows what else we’ll find, should we actually take this to court?”
Hesitating for a while, the fuming head counselor wheeled around, leaving without a word. Yuna had attempted a polite bow, but found herself awkwardly shuffling out of the house. Neither counselor had bothered to close the door behind her, but Katsumi was standing in the doorway, shutting the door once she heard the squealing of tires and the roar of a car’s engine fading into the distance.
She gave a sigh of relief, turning to the side, only glancing at Hikari. “You know? Everyone was right about us. We really are dangerous when we work together.”
Hikari scoffed, the hint of a proud expression on her face. “If only we had that kind of idea back when we were in college, huh? We’re only on the same page because of Koharu, though. Back then, we couldn’t agree on anything.”
Katsumi managed a sly smile of her own. “That’s the kind of person Koharu is. She inherited your sense of justice.” She then turned to look at Koharu. “Never lose it, Koharu. No matter what. Your mother would undoubtedly agree.”
The look on Koharu’s face told the tale. She had a hard time masking her awe, watching both Katsumi and Hikari defending her. They had planned it all out, of course. When Koharu confided in Hanako’s mother about the previous meeting with the counselors, she came up with the idea of letting them make their move. Recording just enough of the conversation and forcing them to back off, and threatening their jobs both professionally and publicly.
But more than that, it was closure. Koharu could never clear Rui’s name in innocence for two reasons. For one, the truth was a forbidden secret that could never be revealed. The other, was that the school had painted Rui into such a corner that any effort on Koharu’s part would inevitably be buried. This way, Koharu thought, at least the truth couldn’t be buried any further. She hoped that it would serve as some sense of closure for Rui as well.
Despite the fact that Rui Tomatsu was a horrible person, of course. That fact hadn’t been lost on Koharu, and she did cause a lot of suffering for her friends and countless others during Rui’s time in high school. Koharu could never forgive that, either. But she trusted her friends to deliver justice for the crimes Rui -had- committed.
She couldn’t help but think about what could have happened, if the school had never tried to pin that first accusation against Rui in the first place. Would she still have gone down this path? Was Rui always this prone to violent outbursts when she felt inferior? Or was she framed for a crime she didn’t actually commit? This truth, Koharu feared, would never come to light.
Hikari pulled the hidden recorder from the inside of the door, handing it to Katsumi. “I want a copy of it. Insurance, you understand.”
“Of course. Well, it’s getting late…”
“Ah, lemme walk you to your car. Koharu, wash up for dinner, okay?”
Koharu simply nodded, padding off towards the bathroom. Once out of sight, the calm expressions on both mothers’ faces faded, and they left the house, closing the door quietly behind them.
The walk to Katsumi’s car was silent, and they both hesitated once they arrived. Katsumi spoke first, after an awkward silence. “So… you never made your wish, right?”
“Of course not. Did you?”
Katsumi sighed, closing her eyes. “No. Not after what happened to the bridge we had keeping us together back in college.”
“Ah, that…” Hikari sighed herself, looking down at the ground with an expression of regret. “Yuma… I still miss her.”
“As do I, Hikari. I truly regret what happened to her. Even if it was her own doing, she was still our closest friend.”
Neither woman noticed the door just cracked open, Koharu staring out with one eye at the scene.
* * *
Some time had passed. From Hanako’s perspective, she had long since stopped trying to keep track of how much went by. The internal haze was ever present in her mind, but it had become harder to dwell on it, what with the noise crowding in her mind. It had taken longer for the school to reopen, given the public outcry over the tragedy, and the sudden resignations of its two Head Counselors, but eventually, she would find herself back in school.
A few days after the battle with Rui, Yasu had told Hanako that she was moving to a nearby city. Her parents had decided to give her a fresh start somewhere else, given how close she was to Rui. Yasu didn’t fight the decision, unable to face the survivors of Rui’s warpath, she had said. Hanako had put up a vestigial effort to keep her in Mitakihara, but she couldn’t really argue with the logic. Still, without Yasu, Hanako would have undoubtedly become a Witch, just like Akari had.
She wandered the hall, not even sure if she was coming from class, or going to. Or if it was to or from Fencing Club, if it was even running today. What day was it, anyway? It was a voice that pierced this veil, as it always did, though one Hanako didn’t expect.
“Yo! Earth to Hanako! Are ya in there, kid?” Yui was waving a hand in front of Hanako, who snapped out of her trance and stumbled back a bit. “Whew, there ya are. Shinju kinda let slip about everything after I uh… after I let my story slip at practice the other night.”
A sigh came from Yui’s side, and Hanako went pale once she noticed Esther standing there. “Yeah. You really don’t have a knack for subtlety. It’s a good thing Shinju is one of us, or else that could have been one hell of a thing to explain to Kyubey.”
“Aw c’mon. Shinju’s already made her contract, so I don’t feel so bad about makin’ this joke, but worst case, Kyubey’d have another client if I’d spilled the beans!”
“Jokes are funnier when you don’t explain them, Yui.”
Ignoring Esther, Yui looked back towards Hanako. “Speakin’ of Shinju, she’s waitin’ for us. You uh… you -eat-, right Hanako? ‘Cause you’re goin’ at a snail’s pace right at lunch time, an’ that ain’t a good look either.”
“I… It’s lunch time?” Hanako shook her head. Of course it was lunch time. She wasn’t the only one wandering the halls, and in following the flow of other students, she had wandered to just outside the cafeteria.
Yui let out a laugh, patting Hanako on the shoulder. “C’mon! We gotta get some kinda fuel in us if we’re gonna survive the day!” Yui then gently pulled at Hanako’s shoulder, letting go once she had turned her around, and began walking. Esther sighed, holding her head in her hand, but otherwise followed without a fuss, with Hanako right behind, trotting to catch up.
Her haze persisted until she sat down at the table, Shinju’s polite wave breaking her trance. Beside her was Yui, and on Yui’s other side, Alice. Esther sat across from her sister. Koharu and Midori were nowhere to be seen, but otherwise, the gang was all there. Hanako’s hand was in her pocket, palming her phone, in case Koharu needed updates.
“Christ, Midori… I know your mom’s outta town an’ all, but ya can’t keep her home forever,” Yui muttered, taking a bite of whatever mess she had assembled in front of her.
“She’s just worried, Yui. I’m kind of surprised the turnout is as high as it is, all things considered.” Alice swirled a juice box idly in her left hand, her head rested on her other arm, which was folded down onto the table. “First day back’s a big deal, I guess.”
“Not many people are showing fear. The school, as well as investigators did a pretty good job painting the incident as an isolated one. A few in my class were surprised, others relieved, but otherwise it’s just… business as usual, I suppose.” Esther’s tone was a little melancholy, and she let out a quiet sigh.
“None of them celebrated, I hope?” Shinju tilted her head, staring around them as if looking for eavesdroppers. “I mean, y’know…”
“No. Nothing like that.” Esther winced, rubbing her side.
“A-Are you alright… Esther?” Hanako shuffled a little awkwardly. It was unbelievably odd, given what Yui had talked about with regards to Esther, for her to be sitting at the table with the others, and with the two talking as if they were old friends.
Yui chuckled. “Yeah, she got in a fight. You should see the other guy, though.” Yui motioned to the bandages on her cheek, then at the bandages visible beneath her uniform blouse. “Long story. We’re cool now, though,” she added, casting a reassuring glance over at Alice, who showed no outward reaction.
“You wanna fill us in on it?” Shinju took a sip from her water bottle, looking between the two. “I feel really out of the loop, and that’s including Esther being at practice last time! N-No offense of course!” She added that hastily, waving her hands in front of her face with a nervous laugh.
Esther merely sighed, saying nothing, and giving Yui room to fill the void before silence took hold. “Biiiiiig misunderstandin’ about a lotta stuff. We had a disagreement. Said disagreement led to blows. …Said blows were between two powerful Magical Girls,” she added, her voice just above a whisper, drowning in the cacophony of a high school lunchroom. “Some things, ya can’t just sort with words. But uh, everything’s all cool now. Right?”
“R… Right.” Esther sighed again, then noticed Hanako’s position. She had been sitting awkwardly, as if feeling an injury that was fresh, yet completely healed. She didn’t have any bandages, neither did Shinju, but experience led Esther to ask all the same, if for no other reason than to change the subject. “…What about you, though, Hanako?”
With a squeak, Hanako jumped a little in her seat, looking around to ensure that their table was sufficiently ignored before answering. “…We… we confronted her. T-Tomatsu… that is.”
“She didn’t take losing all that well.” Shinju lowered her voice to match the volume of the others. “Came back with an army, and that army kinda imploded before it could be turned on us. That’s how she died the first time, actually.”
“The first time?!” Yui struggled to control her volume, on the edge of her seat by now.
“Oh yeah, we left that part out. Tomato didn’t stay dead from the news report.”
Hanako closed her eyes, head tilted down towards the table. “She… She made a bunch of other girls… make wishes on her behalf. One of them died… protecting us. The other… her friend… sh-she… um…”
Shinju closed her eyes as well, a note of resolve in her quiet voice. “…She turned into a Witch.”
Hanako knew this wouldn’t be an easy topic to broach, and she had resolved to ask about it privately later on, but the cat was out of the bag now. But whatever reaction Hanako and Shinju expected, it wasn’t the one they received.
“Oh man… that’s a really bad way to figure that all out.”
Esther nodded slowly. “Indeed. But to survive the revelation under such duress… you two really are something else.”
It took every ounce of willpower for Hanako to contain her voice, and what came out was a mix between a shout and a whisper. “You -knew-?! You knew that Magical Girls… b-become Witches?!”
“Of course.” Esther’s expression was neutral, no surprise on her face. “I’ve been fighting for years, Hanako. I realized the truth not too long after making my wish. It was… difficult to accept, but once I had, I realized that nothing had changed.”
“Uh. Yeah. I uh… I knew too.”
“Oh yeah?” Shinju once again looked around, paying careful attention to make sure they were still alone. “How long did it take you to figure out?”
Yui rubbed the back of her head nervously. “…A few months before making my wish.”
Audible gasps came from Shinju and Hanako, who were stunned again to see that both Esther and Alice didn’t react at all. “You knew -before- making your wish?! You made your wish despite knowing what you would become?!” Hanako was shaking as she spoke, taking deep breaths, yet unable to control them. How could anyone make a wish, knowing what it meant? To fight Witches, former Magical Girls who fell into despair with no end in sight, until you, too, became a Witch, perpetuating the cycle?
Kyubey had explained it in more or less those exact terms after the fight with Rui had finished. There wasn’t a lot to tell, and the excuse of combating entropy to stave off the heat death of the universe felt flimsy to Hanako. There was a lot of anger from both girls. Shinju threatened to attack Kyubey for lying to them, but it took Hanako a lot more effort to calm down afterwards. Yasu had known, naturally, but unlike Yui, Yasu found out after the fact, just like the others.
Just like she had when coaching Rui’s victims after their wishes, Yasu had coached and taught Hanako and Shinju about how to navigate their lives as Magical Girls, despite knowing the full truth. It was enough to calm the pair down, but now Yasu wasn’t around to repeat the advice, given Yui’s revelation.
Yui remained calm, however. “Remember how we met? How I beat that Witch for ya, even though I shouldn’t have? How I got all pissed off and told you the Witch’s -name-? Did the same thing with that shark Witch, I think.”
“C… Can any of us… learn their names?” Hanako was slowly regaining control of her breathing. “We… I didn’t even… know I could heal myself… H… How much more is there… that Kyubey didn’t tell us…?”
“Well,” Esther said, cutting in, “I think it was unfortunate for Kyubey to not disclose this. But would you have made your wishes if Kyubey had been completely honest? Aside Yui here, none of us would have. Right?”
“I don’t really care. I don’t regret it at all. Pops is alive ‘cause of what I did.” Yui shook her head with a sigh. “How can I regret somethin’ like that? Even if he has a stroke tonight an’ kicks the bucket, I wouldn’t regret it. I didn’t have to watch him die to some punk ass kid in a cage underground, an’ t’be honest, it kinda saved my life, too.”
“Pretty sure ya know this by now, Hanako, but I like to fight. Like, a lot. Got in a looot of trouble growin’ up ‘cause of it. Well, with my life now, I can fight as much as I want, against some tough freakin’ opponents! I get it all outta my system, an’ I keep some poor bastards from jumpin’ offa skyscrapers an’ all that.”
“Look, all of us are tickin’ time bombs anyway. Nothin’ lasts forever. If I’m gonna go out, I wanna go out with a bang, not a whimper, ya know?”
Finally, Hanako caught her breath, and she slowly nodded. She couldn’t relate, not even a little. But hearing Yui’s resolve was enough to calm her down. As usual, Hanako had jumped to conclusions about Yui, only to find her impressions misplaced.
Esther spoke up, after flashing Hanako a reassuring smile. “As for the Witches’ names, I’m afraid that’s a talent exclusive to Yui. She will have to explain that one to you. Right, Yui?”
“Ah, right. Well… uh, y’see—”
Yui’s words were cut off by a message notification jingle coming from Hanako’s pocket. She jumped, pulling out the phone. “Ah… must be Koharu, wanting an update—” Her eyes widened as she saw the notification. It wasn’t from Koharu.
“Whoa, Hanako. You alright? You look like you’ve just seen a ghost or something!”
“Is it Koharu? She alright?” Yui’s tone was serious, a sudden shift from her usual aloof mannerisms.
“N… No. It isn’t. Um… it’s from… i-it… I…” Hanako’s face had gone completely pale, and she simply set her phone carefully down on the table, her hand shaking as she let it go.
Shinju peered over, looking at the notification. “Ueno Asaharu? Who’s that?”
“M-My… my very… very first friend. Sh… She’s… alive?” Hanako was practically hyperventilating as she stared down at the phone.

It is very very very very VERY important in your activism to avoid dehumanizing the people you are against. Because writing off anyone, ANYONE, as "not human" is a VERY slippery slope and honestly brings your morals into question and makes you just like the people and their beliefs that you're fighting against.
When you decide someone is "not human", that opens the door for you to allow inhumane things to happen to them. There are examples of this up and down all of history. There are examples of this ongoing TODAY.
Reagan didn't see gays as human, that's why he let the aids epidemic run rampant.
JKR doesn't see trans people as human, that's why she uses her wealth to try and remove their human rights to medical care and safe places for them to exist.
Zionists don't see Palestinians as human, that's why they've had no problem with bombing them night after night for months, killing uncountable civillians including over 15,000 children.
If you're ever tempted to say something like "Cops aren't human because of how they treat POCs and protesters", stop right there. Double-back on that thought and start again with "they ARE human, but their actions are still monstrous and wrong."
They can be horrible horrible people and you are under no personal obligation to help them make better choices or help them to see that what they're doing is wrong, but they're still human. And you don't get to take their humanity away from them for it, because odds are they've already done that with their perceived enemies.
Do not take away someone's humanity to excuse their actions, no matter how horrific they might be, because in doing so you excuse yourself from doing horrific things to them in return.
We have to be stronger than that and include them in the bigger picture of our activism. These are people with harmful beliefs who, more than likely, will need a LOT of time and work with therapists who specialize in cult deprogramming and personality disorders like narcissism to bring them around to seeing other people as people again. Even if we get the world we want, where police are abolished and Palestine is free and trans people have rights to their own bodies the world over, these people will still exist and need a place in that society because they are still human and deserve the same human rights as everyone else.
It can be a tough pill to swallow but a very necessary one. Avoid dehumanizing your opponents at all cost.

The Religion of Science: Bad Media Bad Grasp on Reality
Before you bang your fist on the desk and accuse me of being in the theist, deist or in the spiritualist camp let me tell you that I am agnostic at worst and an atheist at best, culturally I am a Jew and have respect for my ancestry but find all The Torah says hard to swallow. The universe is governed by detectable forces that require no deity. Yet, I believe it does take faith to believe in so much that us mortals declare a scientific fact, when facts, especially in recent years, have been nothing more than convenient narratives spun by those in power and sold to the youth who, often, take action on this misinformation.
As a skeptic I have to say that to believe much of what is flown under the banner of science takes a degree of faith. Firstly, one must have faith that the results of scientific inquiry haven’t been infiltrated by politics. These days, one would be a fool to believe such a thing, but such fools do exist. These fools don’t bat an eye at the idea of Big Tech, people who in my opinion have no right to declare what’s scientifically accurate, state that like a loving father they will oversee what information is disseminated and that they are the final word on what is disinformation. But, Big Tech isn’t an unbiased party. They tend to, as an example, dislike Israel, support abortion and the Covid vaccine. Make no mistake about it, censorship is political in nature, the ruling party is always the final word on what’s true. I’m not weighing in on any of the above and divulging political affiliation, I’m simply stating a fact. These days, it’s not a monarch who decides what’s accurate, it’s Big Tech, Big Pharma and Twitter’s Social Justice Warriors. Sadly, inconvenient truths are deemed as misinformation and followers of the religion of science blindly accept, although often against their better judgement, that the verdict passed down by those in power is the best possible answer.
To believe in everything that’s said to be scientific, one must have faith in media integrity. Irresponsibly, at the genesis of the AIDS epidemic, Dr. Fauci announced on air that “perhaps there will be a certain number of cases of individuals who [contract AIDS that] are just living with and in close contact with someone with AIDS, or at risk of AIDS, who does not necessarily have to have intimate sexual contact or share a needle, but just the ordinary close contact that one sees in normal interpersonal relations.” This single speculation inspired hundreds of theories and hoaxes about contracting the virus via everything from soda cans to toilet seats. As a result, many died in hospital beds while nurses were afraid to touch them. Yet, the informed knew that the virus wasn’t airborne. It was just the religion of science that swallowed the pill whole and conscripted this media propelled fear mongering into their belief system.
To believe in all that’s presented as science, one must have faith that the experiments were well conducted. For instance, the DSM III Removed homosexuality from its inventory of assessable disorders in 1980, this was largely due to the shoddily designed research of Alfred Kinsey. Kinsey declared that “ homosexuality [is] more common than previously assumed, thus suggesting that such behaviors [are] part of a continuum of sexual behaviors and orientations,” despite his sample being, intentionally or unintentionally, skewed. His methodology of arriving at a conclusion, popularism, as we can see from the above statement, is transparently flawed. But, it’s not just that his declaration is flawed, his research was most poorly conducted. Kinsey’s sample was limited to only 5000 males. Of those surveyed, a disproportionate number came from prison inmates, many of whom were sex offenders, he only interviewed one African American but his data wasn’t tabulated and he over-sampled people recruited via homosexual-friendly organizations or magazines. Like anyone else, homosexuals deserve all of the freedoms granted in The Bill of Right and this is something, when and if push comes to shove, I would fight until my very last breathe for, but, being deserving of rights makes them no less of a mentally ill fragment of society who’s 12% more prone to suicide than heterosexuals, significantly more likely than heterosexuals to abuse substances and have suffered childhood abuse. Yet, the religion of science insists that homosexuality is a healthy lifestyle. Social Media and the news never disclosed that Kinsey’s study was a sham and pushes the political agenda behind Kinsey’s message. The younger generation, being that they were raised on TV and social media, knows no better. They are our future leaders and those who will continue to perpetuate the religion of science.
Moreover, to become a believer in the religion of science, one must have faith that the answers provided aren’t merely the correlative events that human’s fallible perception can sense. Most who took Statistics in college are aware that there’s more car accidents when bikinis are on sale, but these two events aren’t related. In 1998, British physician Andrew Wakefield published a study in The Lancet, this study proposed a link between MMR vaccines and increasing rates of autism diagnoses in British children. We now know that there’s no relationship between these events. Despite a correlation, the experiment has been proven to be flawed. There wasn’t a causality. Adherents of the religion of science took to this notion and it became, and for some still is, part of their belief system.
Most of the above issues can be ruled out by peer review, but as with the recent covid vaccines not even peer review uncovered some of the dangers with the vaccine and accurate dissemination of information is a must.
I know what you’re thinking, science is rooted in fact and requires no faith, people don’t believe in science, science, because of the ways in which it investigates measurable occurrences is just correct. I agree, mostly. Yet, there is a religion of science. Adherents of the religion believe anything that fits into the zeitgeist or aligns with their own worldview. For example, The Bell Curve reports this on racial differences in IQ score, Blacks score lower, on average, than Whites. Adherents of the religion of science don’t like this fact and those who tout this may be subject, especially in certain European Countries, to fines and prison terms. I’m not disputing the uselessness of IQ scores, I myself find them of little use and see that there are flaws, although I disagree that the flaw is in the wording of questions (Ebonics and Texan aren’t uniquely codified dialects mutually unintelligible from their mother language, besides, all Americans were educated in the same system and should be able to code switch between ethnic slang and standardized English, as an example, I’m not British but possess the critical thinking skills to infer meaning from unknown British vernacular, but then again, inference in post Enlightenment systems of thinking is considered slanderous assumption). I believe in the science when the science is void of politics.
What caused there to be a religion of science? This phenomenon was caused by the gullibility of man, lack of time to research everything that is presented as science, the how political parties are to use “science” to push their narrative and flaws in methods of research. To be clear, the scientific method is the best we’ve got. Moreover, science isn’t something that requires faith, when done correctly and unadulterated by politics. But, the combination of the above causes there to be a pseudo religion, and even at times religions that exist under the banner of science, of science, like Scientology, blurring the lines between science, science-fiction and pop psychology. Despite my tirade against Gen Z, I don’t honestly expect everyone to sift through scientific articles to find the truth.
The real problem is that the religion of science stifles inconvenient data, data that might be used to find better answers to current questions. Best put in words by Kurt Vonnegut, “new knowledge is the most valuable commodity on earth. The more truth we have to work with, the richer we become Breakfast of Champions.” As a society, we must be granted, through the education system, media disseminating information with integrity and freedom of speech, the intellect and ability to question all things supposed by the socio-political machine that backs the religion of science, only through this means can we progress. Yet, we are living in an era of retrograde. Empiricism and systems of Enlightenment era thinking have gone out the window for feeling and truthiness (as coined by Stephen Colbert). America is Rome in the final days and the religion of science will be her downfall.
The fact is this, honesty in Big Tech ran media has gone the way of the dodo, Gen Z is gullible, the educational system has let them down, time constraint makes it so that most people can’t read every scholarly article, media readily mixes pop psychology, untested hypothesis along with anything that fits the contemporary narrative, even to the point of changing definitions, and packages it, whether that’s by putting it into law or just causing panic if said new scientific fact isn’t obeyed, and calls it all science. Facts are suppressed by the media for easily digested narratives or those who align with the current cultural zeitgeist.
How are us mere mortals supposed to sift through the sea of information and sniff out that which is accurate and hasn’t been filtered through the cultural-political machine? Besides, we live in an era in which a healthy dose of skepticism might brand one as an outcast and render them unable to work. If one questions the popular narrative they might be branded a Right Wing Conservative. We’ve heard it all before: “mask up, take the jab, join the new religion of science, no question, please.” Those who had questions like “what about herd immunity” or “why do definitions keep changing for immunity” were outcast. Often, it pays to fiend Gen Z gullibility.
But I have a few questions. Was it vaccines that put an end to previous pandemics or was it changing attitudes towards bathing, the fact that most people lived in rural communities and herd immunity that ended past epidemics? There are some observations that make these hypotheses worth looking into. During the Bubonic Plague, for example, it was observed that mortality was significantly lower in the Jewish Ghettos than in Christian populations. The “causes of this more favorable situation, which is very well documented from the end of the eighteenth century, are certainly many, ranging from compliance with hygiene standards prescribed by religion, rooted in moderate customs for eating and drinking, the low incidence of venereal diseases, and an economic level on average higher than average. I’m not suggesting that I know that hygiene is the cure for a viral pandemic. In fact, another author noted that “nor should it be forgotten that, if the environment in which Jews lived in the era of the ghettos was particularly unhealthy, the trades they exercised were among those with lower risks of morbidity and professional mortality, and that their living arrangements, pursuant to religious requirements, were particularly favorable for increased resistance against causes of lethality. Was it a complex combination of standards of hygiene in a filthy ghetto that caused Jews, during the Bubonic Plague, to be less susceptible to death, I don’t know. But, asking questions like these go against the new religion of science. One must blind themself to complexity and nuance: “shut up, masks and jabs work, if you have any doubts you’re just as naïve as those who believed vaccines caused Autism.”
The religion of science, because our youth was raised on all things instant and extreme, is filled with extremely binary false dichotomies. How many times have you heard “get the jab or everyone dies” or “wear a mask or everyone dies?” Sadly, it’s not only the foolish who fall for these, these false dichotomies, the kind that never account for any sort of nuance, are disseminated through media and, more often then not, align with the ruling party. The past 2 generations, Millennials and Gen Z, have been primed to accept extremes without question, this is the era in which racism allows for a Black president after all. Unscientific false dichotomies, like the above, readily intermingle with hard science and become part of what culture perceives as scientifically accurate.
Moreover, the religion of science demonstrates cult like behaviors. Those who lack reasoning skills often become, loudly and sometimes violently, the adherents of the religion of science. I for one have enough skepticism in my blood to question all things flown under the banner of science. I vow to listen to others with an open heart and judge their words based on the information I have and in the case that I don’t have any information on said topic, I will look for case studies because new knowledge is the most valuable commodity on earth. The more truth I have to work with, the richer I become.
The believers of the religion of science take these things to be scientific facts:
1) Concepts, although incorrect, that are easily digested and perfectly fit in with the current zeitgeist as touted by the media as scientific facts. As an example, many shouted wearing a mask is harmless although it was obvious to others that continual mask wearing is dangerous and recent study states that a “significant rise in carbon dioxide occurring while wearing a mask is scientifically proven. Fresh air has around 0.04% CO2 masks bear a possible chronic exposure to low level carbon dioxide of 1.41–3.2% CO2 of the inhaled air in reliable human experiments.”
2) Artefacts from popular psychology, those wivestales about mental health that sound correct but aren’t.
3) Concepts from psychology and the social sciences that are either only understood by the masses in part, taken out of context or never were correct but because the fact that they fit into the era’s zeitgeist they were adapted by the masses. For example, the alpha/beta man paradigm, which was discredited by the duo who first discovered it or that Dr. Money indisputably proved that gender is a spectrum.
3) A general misunderstanding of science. For example a belief in miraculous things like superfoods and that said superfoods are scientifically tested. This goes hand in hand with things like natural medicine (the greater the dilute the greater the efficacy), the healing powers of meditation (aside from a placebo effect) or any other sophistry that may have been shown somewhat effective in studies because they have the potential of improving outlook by increasing hope.
4) A belief that studies with few participants have the end answer. We saw this with things like priming and the covid vaccine efficacy.
5) Confusing and mixing philosophy with science. For example, although Pascal’s Wager may be completely rational to some, it isn’t science.
At times, science has been a cultural phenomenon that aligns itself with the current zeitgeist and those in power. This is just one of those times. It’s not a monarch these days who decides what’s accurate, it’s Big Tech, Big Pharma and Twitter’s Social Justice Warriors. Sadly, inconvenient truths are deemed as misinformation and followers of the religion of science blindly accept, although often against their better judgement, that the verdict passed down by those in power is the best possible answer.
In brief, faith in accurate results, along with accurate dissemination of results, is something hard to come by. In reality, this isn’t an article about science, it’s about media integrity and the naivety of the masses. To illustrate my point by returning to the notion of vaccines and Autism, the media in the UK rushed to publish the notion that vaccines cause Autism despite strong evidence refuting it. Moreover, at the beginning of the Pandemic Dr. Fauci said “There’s no reason to be walking around with a mask. When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is,” but media preferred to report a panic inducing and loyal religion forging and are defending mask wearing until this very day. Even pro-mask studies, like the one conducted in Bangladesh, prey on the masses’ inability to understand basic math. Ten percent efficacy wouldn’t be an acceptable number for anything else. Yet, the religion of science, sycophants for Big Tech, Big Pharma and those who currently run the country, conscripted these false claims into their belief system falsely claiming “it’s the science!”

Do You Know How To Take Care of a Sick Person?
Tumblr media
My Sicktember 2022 contribution for the prompt : ‘Do You Know How To Take Care of a Sick Person?’.
I’m sorry for the mistakes, English is not my native language. I hope you like it.
Summary : The door opened and Sasuke appeared. He was paler than usual and he was coughing. He looked at Sakura, surprised.
“Sakura ! What are you doing here ?”
She twiddled her fingers nervously.
“I came to see how you were doing. There is a flu epidemic, so I was worried.”
Disclaimer : Naruto belongs to Masashi Kishimoto.
@sicktember
AO3 / FF.NET
Sakura headed for Sasuke's apartment. It was the first time she had been to his home. Usually, Team 7 met at the training ground to wait for Kakashi. Sometimes Sasuke and Naruto waited for her outside her house. But Sasuke had never invited them to his home.
Earlier in the day, Sakura noticed that Sasuke was not feeling well. He looked feverish and she had heard him cough several times. At the end of their mission, which was to take care of a politician's dog who was on a visit to Konoha, Sasuke had gone straight home. A flu epidemic was raging in the village. Sakura's father had caught it and he had been sick for several days. She was worried that Sasuke had caught it too.
She looked at the number she had written down on a piece of paper and looked at the door number. It was here. She knocked on the door. Suddenly, she was seized with doubt. Was she right to come to see him ? Maybe he was sleeping ? Maybe she was disturbing him ? She should have thought before going to his house. The door opened and Sasuke appeared. He was paler than usual and he was coughing. He looked at her, surprised.
“Sakura ! What are you doing here ?”
She twiddled her fingers nervously.
“I came to see how you were doing. There is a flu epidemic, so I was worried.”
“You shouldn't have come. You risk catching it.”
Sakura looked down. She should have known she was bothering him.
“I thought I could have helped you.”
“Do you know how to take care of a sick person ?”
There was no contempt in his voice, just an observation. He was right. She had never taken care of a sick person. She was the one being cared for. Sasuke was seized with a fit of coughing. He could not stop. Sakura approached him and gently put her hand on his back.
“I'll help you get back to your bed.”
Sasuke nodded and told her where his room was. She accompanied him and helped him to lie down in bed. She put her hand to his forehead and frowned. He had a fever.
“Sasuke-kun, do you have any medicine ?”
“In the drawer.”
He pointed to his nightstand. She opened the drawer and found a medicine for the fever. She filled the glass of water that was on the nightstand. Sasuke sat down and swallowed the pill Sakura gave him. He lay down and fell asleep immediately. It was the first time she saw him so sick. But as long as he needed her, she would stay with him.
******
Sasuke slowly opened his eyes. The pill had taken effect while he was sleeping, he felt a little less feverish. He put his hand on his forehead and felt a wet towel. He took it off and looked around. He saw Sakura asleep on a chair next to his bed. The position she was in did not look comfortable and yet she was sleeping soundly. He noticed that his things had been put away. He felt so sick that he did not have the strength to do it. He felt guilty for annoying Sakura with this. For years, he was used to take care of himself. He found it rather pleasant to have someone taking care of him.
He looked once again at Sakura. He put his hand next to hers and touched it lightly. She moved her hand slightly but did not wake up. He knew he should not have let her in. He should have told her to go home, that he could take care of himself, like he always had. But for once, just once, he wanted her to stay with him. He wanted her to take care of him.
He felt very tired. He closed his eyes and fell asleep. He hoped that when he woke up, Sakura would still be there.
The end

Glenn Dale Hospital
Glenn Dale Hospital was built in 1934 to serve as a tuberculosis sanitarium. Sitting on 210 acres in Prince Georges County, Maryland has stood abandoned since 1982. When it was closed permanently due to concerns about the copious amounts of asbestos used in the construction.
The main campus of Glenn Dale consists of a Children’s hospital building and main hospital building, which are connected by a series of underground tunnels and walkways. Each of these buildings has its own morgue and both structures are close to Glenn Dale Road, which bisects the estate and makes the buildings easy fodder for local trespassers who want to match wits with the Washington, D.C Park Police, who routinely patrol the area.
Exploration of the Glenn Dale Hospital grounds is a treacherous experience and not only because the place is closed and trespassers are not suffered lightly. The portions of the buildings that are above ground are in severe disrepair, seeing that they have stood abandoned since 1982. Broken glass litters the ground, roofs and walls are collapsing under their own weight. Rusted metal and other debris litters the campus because of all of the unused hospital detritus that was left behind when the place shut down. The basement and tunnels are in the same condition but with the added hazard of standing water, which rises up to three feet in some places.
Perhaps the most dangerous aspect of exploration is the same aspect that led to the hospital’s closure, large amounts of asbestos. The few people who are allowed into Glenn Dale and this includes paranormal investigators who have gotten permission to visit always wear respirators because of the carcinogens in the air.
The haunted history of Glenn Dale Hospital is much like that of any other long-abandoned institution of similar size. After the tuberculosis epidemic faded, the hospital was repurposed to house the mentally ill. Out of this fact the legend became that the hospital was a home for the criminally insane, who were simply let loose to roam the grounds when the hospital closed. Legend has it that Glenn Dale Hospital had its own crematorium and that the odor of burning flesh still permeates the buildings. There is a smokestack on the hospital grounds but all evidence points to it only ever being used to burn refuse.
The few people who are lucky enough to explore the grounds find no lack of intriguing paranormal experiences. There are certainly the usual reports of shadow figures and unexplained sounds. The second floor of the general hospital building seems to be a hotbed of these types of activity, with reports of full-bodied apparitions in hospital gowns roaming the halls and disembodied voices either screaming or laughing maniacally. There have even been reports of a pack of ghost dogs roaming around the campus near the children’s hospital. Paranormal activity like this can certainly be found all over the Glenn Dale campus, it’s just that this particular floor seems more active than the rest.
There are a few local legends that concern haunting at the hospital that can’t be directly confirmed or denied, but they are interesting nonetheless. One of these stories concerns a patient who haunts the hospital wearing a straight jacket. He went insane having witnessed the murder of his wife and children during a home invasion. He was so wracked with guilt that he didn’t save his family that he broke into the pharmaceutical dispensary and killed himself by swallowing pills. It is this same guilt that supposedly binds his spirit to the hospital.
The second legend concerns an unnamed police officer who was called to investigate some vandalism that had occurred on the property. A while after he arrived, people in the vicinity reported hearing gunshots. When backup arrived, the officer was found in one of the patient rooms, staring blankly at a bare wall. He had emptied his gun into this wall, firing at something that no one would ever find. True or not, such stories are a vital part of the mystique of this haunted hospital.

Something I want people to take away from the assassination attempt of Donald Trump is that it was also a mass shooting. There’s a total of 4 victims, which qualifies as a mass shooting, and since July 1st there has been 39 mass shootings in America. We are only 15 days into July and people still argue about gun violence while the number of shootings keeps going up.
