Spotless: Pizzicato
Chapter Nineteen
Featuring: Dean Winchester/Reader, Dean/Bela, Dean/Cas (unrequited)
Other characters: Miriam Talbot (OFC Bela's mother)
Word Count: 2567
Warnings, etc: Mutual pining, putting out other people's fires, and old baggage, unbeta'd
A/N: Castiel and Trouble's friendship is something I didn't realize she had been missing until he was in front of her. There are a couple of big truth bombs in this chapter and I hope I handled them respectfully. This is an AU and it is not indicative of this author's feelings on canon or any other fandom shipping practices.
Series Masterlist
Posting on Deanâs instagram account was par for the course as the bandâs publicist. You bothered to know what a hashtag was, for one. For another it also allowed you to check traffic on posts and actively moderate things to help the comment section look best for Deanâs image. Afterall, Dean trusted you, you werenât going to leak anything or make him look like an idiot.
You were a goddamn professional and this wasnât the hardest thing youâd done in the last year, but Jesus fuck were you pissed.
Dean hated tattoos. Really, he hated needles. He was black out drunk when he and Sam got their matching flaming pentagrams. He actually had a panic attack the next morning after realizing he let someone âsew inkâ into his skin. By sheer force of will and through the bond of shared grief, you got him to go with you for Joâs memorial tattoo on the tenth anniversary of her death. It was in your all-time top five ultimate Dean-Y/N memories.
And now it meant jack shit.
You edited and cropped the photos, sent two back to Bela to post on her account and then posted the lionâs share onto Deanâs, making him look like the diligent boyfriend while Bela was busy in the chair. You thanked Billie for taking care of âhis girlâ and made sure the shop was the location and tagged. You wanted to punch something, it looked so good. Then you sat back and let the interwebs do its job.
Okay, in actuality, you emailed about twenty different people, had a conference call with the tour management marketing team, scheduled radio station drop ins and followed up with Meg on the expected release of Deanâs photoshoot and interview. These days it may just end up online, but you hoped she was able to score him real physical print space.
It was just as you were winding down for the night, when your phone rang. It was past any reasonable business hours and you were already done with your skin care routine, but then you saw the caller id.
âMiriam! Hi!â You tried to sound pleasantly surprised.
âDonât Miriam me, young lady. What is going on out there? Is it drugs? I thought we missed this stage when she quit acting for college. Youâd tell me if this hoodlum was pressuring her into risky behavior wouldnât you?â
Which was a lot to unpack right off the bat like that, luckily you had experience dealing with Belaâs mother.
âItâs just a tattoo. Sheâs not on drugs, I promise.â
âAnd what about this Dean? I knew they were seeing each other, but this seemed a bit more intimateâ not exactly in the public eye.â
Oh, she was good.
âHeâs not on drugs either. Andâ- he actually isnât thrilled with tattoos. This might be all Bela, if Iâm being honest.â
âHave you seen the things theyâre saying? The things theyâre calling her, Y/N?â
You rolled your eyes and heaved yourself out of bed, you needed your laptop if you were going to continue this conversation rationally.Â
âLet me look into itâ what site were you on?â
âOh, Iâm not sure. Olivette, one of the boardmemberâs wives, told me she read about it online during dinner.â
You inhaled deeply and started your usual rotation of sites, youâd have to add some new tags to follow Belaâs buzz more closely going forward.Â
âAnd youâre sure this wasnât just bad blood from Olivia? Iâm not finding much besides general surprise.â
âItâs Olivette. And yes, Iâm certain. She wouldnât make me worry without a reason.â
And then you realized what you were missing, it wasnât just People or TMZ you had to worry about. You went to Hello!âs twitter and you found what had Miriam Talbotâs friend in a huff.Â
You started scanning the comments, gathering the most common complaints and judging their amount of influence via cursory glances. You did not know a lot of the news personalities or celebrity bloggers in the UK. You were going to have to meet with Bela and figure out a better approach going forward.
âOkay, Miriam, itâs almost eleven here. I know you probably called me as soon as you woke up, but consider me on the case. Alright? Belaâs fine and this is just a minor hiccup.â
âIf youâre sure, Y/N, dear.â
You sighed. âOf course. I would warn you if there was anything to worry about. But please just let this run its course. You know how the tabloids are.â
âUnfortunately I do, thatâs why I called. Please keep me updated if anything else comes up?â
âWill do. You have a good ni-day!â
âGoodnight dearâ and thank you.â
You smiled at your lap. âAnytime.â
You let her hang up. Then you promptly pulled up your contacts list and warned Bela that her mother was sniffing about online and to call her at a decent hour. And finally, you spent the next four hours (or so) online until you had swam to the bottom of the cesspool and decided it wasnât worth your time. At least not right then, not so exhausted.
Three days passed since the snobby UK gossip ragsâ judgment rained down and, as expected, it had already just about fizzled out. You sat in a cafe with a quad shot flat white, waiting for your lunch date to arrive. Not truly a date, though it wasnât a meeting either.
It was a diplomatic mission.
Then you spotted him and your stomach swooped, feeling the loss of his presence in your life all over again.
âHey, Cas.â You stood and held your arms open for a hug, which he accepted with a timid smile.
âItâs good to see you, Trouble,â his gravelly voice murmured in your ear. He still smelled the same.
You pulled back and looked him in the eye, searching for anything but the sincere blue reality in front of you. He held no grudges, not with you, without even discussing it you knew he was still your friend.Â
You then punched him squarely in the shoulder. âThatâs for ghosting us all for the last nine months, assbutt!â
He grunted, and rolled his eyes. âI can accept that.â
âGood. Because I missed you. We all miss you.â
He tilted his head and raised his eyebrows in challenge.
âSoâ heard you have a kid, huh. Thatâs â- weird.â
Castiel exhaled and shook his head. âWho told you?â
âWhat? Nobody. I have eyes. And spend enough time online to draw some conclusions.â
âKelly told you.â
âShe didnât have to. Sheâs amazing by the wayâ are you a thing now, now that you know he exists?â
Castiel looked affronted. âMe and Kelly? Oh, no. That was a teenage mistake. We were young. And weâve both matured into vastly different people. But I respect her and I thinkâ I hope Iâve earned her trust.â
âTell me about himâ- heâs what? Twenty-twenty one?â
âHeâs twenty three and very talented. Kind, impossibly optimistic even.â
âYikes, tough combo out here.â
âTell me about it.â
You shared a look and he smiled at you like he knew what you were thinking about. Like you were reliving the same joke.
You blinked away the sting in your eyes.
âGo get your dark roast and get back over here, weâve got things to discuss.â
His eyes softened, but Cas didnât argue with you.
You sipped your drink and tried not to let all of the questions that had been building for months run away from you. He was back both too quickly and too slowly. You cleared your throat, the awkwardness you had been fighting back rushed to the surface.
âSoâ I presume there is more to you calling to get lunch. Not just asking about Jack and goading me about my latest tattoo?â Cas wasnât one for small talk.
You nodded and swallowed around another perfect mouthful of milk and espresso.
Castielâs face went through a journey when you didnât quickly reply. âHe doesnât want to see meâ- he made that quite clear.â
âAnd what about since everything?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI know Deanâs called you. He might not have been big enough to actually apologize in a voicemail, but I know he wants to fix thingsâ he misses you as his friend, too.â
âThen he should be able to suck up his pride and make the effort,â Cas snipped, the first sign of the lingering anger from his and Deanâs fight.
âI havenât exactly seen much of your effort. Do you not want to fix things?--- And Iâm not talking about coming back to the bandâ that ship has sailed. Iâm talking about twenty years of friendships you just walked out on.â
Cas stared at his coffee, his eyebrow ring arched with his bitchy expression. He hated being corrected, you knew that. But this had gone on long enough.
âIâve spoken with everyone but Dean,â Cas explained. âItâs not perfect, but itâs progress.â
âYou never spoke to me,â you spat.
Casâ eyes softened again. âI always knew where your loyalties lie, you took your time, too.â
âWaitâ even SAM?!â
âSam and I havenât lost contact this whole time.â
You sucked in air. âOh, he is so dead.â
âY/N. It wasnât like we were plotting or anything. He was worried about me, I was worried about Dean.â
âYeah, but if Dean knewââ
âAsk Sam, but I donât think he could hide anything from Dean if he wanted to.â
You knew he was right. Ever since Sam got sober, transparency had been something Sam put into his closest relationships anyway. Beside Dean being ruthless and stubborn, well, you supposed Cas was right.Â
âWhy do I feel like this band just doesnât want me to be able to do my job?â
âYour position as group therapist is fairly tenuous. Especially with Pamela involved.â
âI meant my real job. If I had known you were on decent terms with, well, everyone but Dean, it would have made things a lot easier, young man.â You couldnât help but smile now. Sure you were hurt, but the eggshells you had been stepping over for so long really only took up a single corner of the floor.
It was freeing.
âI never meant to cause you any distress.â
âThat doesnât make it go away, Cas.â
He bowed his head, but popped back up to meet your gaze. âI know. I apologize. I didnât want you to think that I was doneâ with any of you.â
You pinched your eyes closed quickly and then reached over the table to squeeze his forearm. âOkay. Soâ youâll come to Deanâs birthday party, then?â
Cas patted your hand with his left and sat back, breaking the contact and sat with the invitation for a heavy moment.
âWhat makes you think heâd want me there?â
You glared at him, all tattooed and handsome and absolutely clueless about how much his absence has affected Dean. Sure, Dean got to keep the band, but it wasnât the same without Cas. Cas has had to start over entirely, become a dad and rebuild his career all without any of the support Dean has had around him through his own troubles.
âLookâ I know youâre Mister Independent and I donât want to set back any of the progress youâve made without him needing you around. But he still looks for you whenever we all go out. And hanging out with Kevin, made it abundantly clear to him that you were availableâ you just werenât interested.â
âWhy do you always make it sound like we were an item?â
You rolled your eyes. âLook, we all know Dean has attachment issues. Iâm not saying anything was kinky between you guysâ thatâs not my business. But, as friends, you guys deserve to at least get some answersâ closure or forgiveness can come later, if you get there.â
âIâll think about it.â
âReally? Youâre not just saying that to get me off your case?â
âYes, really.â
You smirked and Casâ smiled with his eyes, fidgeting his lip ring with his tongue.
Cas cleared his throat and took a sip of his coffee before changing gears. âSo, your friend Bela and, uh, Dean?â
You groaned and hid your eyes in your hand. When you looked up he was laughing at you.
âWhat?!â
âStopâ we both know what itâs all about.â
âKevin seems to think Deanâs whipped.â Mischief continued to dance in Casâ eyes.
âWell, itâs about time.â
âI told him, the only one who has had Dean whipped in over a decade is you.â
You choked on your spit, sputtering at Casâ bluntness.
âThey donât know itâs for show do they?â
You inhaled deeply. âSam knows. Dean and Bela have their own private agreement about it all. But, uh, yeah, you pretty much guessed right.â
Cas watched you thoughtfully, futzing with his lip ring with his top teeth now.Â
âHow are you holding up?â
âMe? Iâm fine, why?â
Cas nudged your ankle under the table with his combat boot.
âAs someone who was definitely in love with him for most of my lifeâ I know the symptoms.â
You sighed and shivered at being seen and having your long held suspicions confirmed. You rubbed your upper arm, trying to fight the goosebumps. âIâm fine. Nothing has changed. Heâs just been working on himself and that isâ distracting.â
Cas hummed, head cocking to the side as if looking at you with a different angle would give him more insight.
âI mean it. Heâs in therapy and everything. Sam and him are working out. Heâs been insanely focused on the latest albumââ
âHeâs doing penance.â
âMaybe. But he wants to be better. Itâs not just guilt. I donât know how to explain it. But, youâll see what I mean.â
Cas eyebrow popped up again.
âYou will,â you insisted.
âYou always were able to read me werenât you?â
You chuckled at the back of your mouth, short and knowing. âGuess it comes with being stuck with each other for so long.â
âShared trauma response,â Cas teased.
âOr that.â
You finished the last of your drink and looked around the cafe.
âSo, where we going to eat? I think weâve had enough heavyâ sushi?â
âYou buying?â
âPhantom Traveler is covering this as a business lunch.â
Cas stood and pushed in his chair. âOkay, well then, bring on the seafood.â
You stood and let Cas walk you outside, his hand on the small of your back until he could offer you his elbow on the sidewalk. You smiled up at him and pulled him tight to your side.
âIâm glad youâre back, Cas.â
âWell, weâll see if everyone agrees with you, wonât we?â
The afternoon passed quickly, catching up and sharing memories that were now tinted with the grief of the last lost year. Things made more sense the longer you thought about how the band had been acting, especially way back at the Animal Shelter where Casâ niece had been more than willing to put in her two cents. You texted Sam while you waited for your meals, warning him where you were and what you knew.
âHave fun.â
His only response. Asshole.
But everything kept from you, kept from Dean, wouldnât last forever. It couldnât. Now you at least could control the narrative a bit more by being in on it all. Or most of it at least.

March 2024 Destiel Fic Recs
My favourite fics written in March 2024. Please leave kudos and comments for the authors.
Baker Six by komodobits
Summer, 1944. Dean doesnât think about First Lieutenant Novak.
Feel It All Around by egravis
With Cas newly fallen, a lot of things have changed. Like, for one, Cas has never appeared so fragile before.
I hate you when Sam sees it (and love you when he doesn't) feat Bobby Singer by FreyaBlackthorn
Dean and Cas love each other in the dark. They hate each other in front of a freshly soul-supplied Sam. It's that easy.
Except it's not easy, because Sam may be a Winchester, but even his stupidness knows bounds. So how can you make your little brother believe you are totally not interested in your feathered best friend (who is totally your boyfriend, for the record)?
Bobby makes a guest appearance because he's the best, and because he cannot be fooled.
Never Let Me Go by K_A_Mindin
Found the place to rest my head
Personal Jesus by GreenEnthusiast
Dean has made a nasty habit of calling out to Castiel in the dead of night, when heâs all alone. Repressed feelings and a case of beer are quite the duo, one the Winchester is no stranger to. All he wants is to love and be loved, but heâs not sure if he knows how.
The Space Between The Trees by birdyedwards
The point was that Cas fell out of that barn and right into Deanâs life like heâd always belonged there. Like there was a Castiel-shaped spot missing somewhere and heâd slotted right into it. Over the past several months, the two of them havenât been apart for more than a couple hours and Dean wonders how he ever went on without him. How it was even possible that Cas hadnât been there the entire time.

The thing no one tells you about hunting is that itâs surprisingly boring. Having Cas around helps.

Cas comes equipped with enough angelic strength to fling demons against the wall with a flick of his wrist, but still lets himself get pushed and pulled around by Dean like it's nothing.

It has been three months since the world was saved.

Everything is finally in its place, and Dean tries to get his shit together.
An angel walks into a flower shop... by FreyaBlackthorn
This is literally a pinterest post turned into a silly fic. What would happen if an almighty angel walked into a flower shop to buy his serial killer of a boyfriend flowers? (feat Sam, because let's be honest, he would probably be there and be a little gremlin about it).

Stuck in Purgatory, Castiel has time to think.
devastating, apocalyptic, & utterly catastrophic by aalienbluezz
And that was it. Cas was done. So done. Why on Earth would he read this ridiculously inaccurate folklore when he could just look at Deanâs adorable face. And eyes. And his pretty, pretty mouth. Cas was about two minutes in to remapping out each atom of Deanâs devastating cupidâs bow when Dean finally piped up with that same strange look and a self-conscious laugh: âUh, I got crumbs on my mouth or somethinâ?â
or,
Cas introduces Dean to the wonders of Chapstick.
the gone fishin' fic by the_oncoming_stormageddon
Dean and Cas have been dating for three months, but Dean isnât sure that heâs ready to come out yet. Meanwhile, Bobbyâs known theyâve been dating for six months.
A Tough Nut To Crack by ImYourHoneyBee
The cold is worse, bad enough that their comfortable moss insulation and leaf doorway donât keep it out, and despite his thick winter coat, Dean is freezing. On the other side of the nest, Cas is curled into a tight ball, his tail flipped over his nose like a blanket. Dean wonders if heâs cold too.
Itâs dark inside their nest, almost pitch black with how the maple leaves block out the starlight. Cas is nothing but a lump, but Dean bets that if they were lumps together, theyâd be warmer. Itâs not gay if theyâre huddling for warmth, right? It should also be taken into account that theyâre squirrels, and heâs pretty sure itâs not gay if theyâre squirrels, either.
Dean is suffering because heâd insisted that they be two squirrels sleeping on opposite sides of the nest, five inches apart because theyâre not gay.
Morning After by lizleenimbus
Dean wakes up after a one-night stand only to find something - or rather someone - he didn't expect.
It's the first month of @deancaspinefest posting, so check those fics out here if you want some long fics of Dean and Cas pining for each other. And please do read my fic "Not our kind of thing" here.

my rating of supernatural season 2
1 - in my time of dying
literally they were insane for starting a season off like this. it had everything. i appreciate in hindsight how well it set up the themes for the entire rest of the season, as well as genuinely threw me off and astonished me. i have such complicated feelings on john winchester, but jeffrey dean morgan infuses him with such sympathy that i couldn't help but feel for him. fredric lehene as azazel is also a highlight, i genuinely think he gave us one of the best performances of the season, and i wonder if we'll be seeing him back. emotionally i think this was my most evocative post of the liveblog. 10/10
2 - everybody loves a clown
while the monster in this didn't hit as hard for me, i think it did a great job of setting up the roadhouse as a central location for the show, as well as introducing us to ellen, jo, and ash (my beloved, may his memory be a fucking blessing). it was also really impactful to see sam and dean's separate ways of grieving john, as well as giving us a really interesting role reversal. showing dean as the one disillusioned with their father while sam is eager to carry on his work is very compelling, especially because it's evident (at least to me) that sam is far more like his father than dean is. i'm glad they resolved my stress about the impala because jesus christ. 8/10
3 - bloodlust
MAN this episode fucks. it has a lot of supernatural all time hits, like dean's coping mechanisms (bad), classic winchester codependency, wondering about the morality of judging all supernatural creatures as "monsters" to be exterminated, and starts setting up the tension of dean potentially having to kill his brother. unfortunately, it also introduces another kind of supernatural standard, which is its constant crimes against black people. gordon is an interesting and compelling character, but you can really tell he was the product of white writers and casting directors, because his complexities are not treated well. it's also worth noting that in this season, the majority of the recurring antagonists are black men, and the implications of that just. doesn't really sit well with me. beyond that though, the premise of the episode is really interesting. 7/10
4 - children shouldn't play with dead things
we have another like. weirdly sexually charged episode. which is par for the course in this show but it's always funny to witness wincest in its natural tongue-in-cheek habitat. i thought the monster in this was fun, and it sets up the revelation dean has about john dying for him very very well. the one sin is that y'all did not have an episode set in lawrence kansas without having the boys go visit missouri mosely? really? the disrespect. 8/10
5 - simon said
this episode did NOT have to go as hard as it did. this is like. peak supernatural. i really enjoyed andy as a character, and the further setup of the chosen children and their abilities is sick as hell. the parallels between sam & dean and andy & his brother were... appropriately bonkers. this is supernatural. we can't have a normal brotherly relationship. we got fell on black days. 10/10
6 - no exit
i have to admit that i really love jo and was glad to see her centered more in an episode, though i am begging her and dean just to get it over with and make out already. i also thought that making h. h. holmes the ghost was pretty badass. this season does a lot more with actual american folklore and history instead of just having generic monster of the week episodes, and as a huge nerd i thought that was great. the ellen and john backstory reveal was also particularly tragic. i had fun here. 7/10
7 - the usual suspects
okay this one was so much fun. this was one of the first episodes where they really shook up the formula and turned our expectations of it on its head. i also thought highlighting how in sync sam and dean are with each other through a prisoner's dilemma scenario was really clever. this show never really commits to an acab stance in a way i would have preferred, but this was the early aughts so like. it's whatever. they get close enough to it. 8/10
8 - crossroad blues
this episode excels in that it takes one of the most classic american folktales (selling your soul to the devil at the crossroads) and uses it as a fun monster premise as well as setting up the denouement. it also has a fun tribute to robert johnson, which i found pretty cool. demons seal deals with a kiss so i demand to know why the hell azazel and john didn't kiss. you know. for scientific purposes. 8/10
9 - croatoan
insane that this show managed to make a zombie apocalypse style episode without zombies or the apocalypse. it was pretty inventive, especially because i'm kind of tired of the white western idea of zombies. the conspiracies around the word croatoan are kind of funny to me because like. overwhelmingly the evidence points to the lost roanoke colony assimilating with the local american indian nations, but i'm here for a fun time not a technical time. this episode also sets up some insane lore for the end of the season with sam, as well as some classic winchester agonizing. 9/10
10 - hunted
gonna put a quick trigger warning for discussion of racism here.
this episode could have been perfect and then they dropped the ball so hard at the end that it was physically painful. it had two incredible soundtrack choices (white rabbit and supermassive black hole), what was maybe a twin peaks reference???, it girl katherine isabelle, and some really well done suspense where dean is essentially a trap baited for sam. however, the righteous justice for gordon being sam calling the cops on him so a bunch of cops roll up on a black man wildly shooting a gun into the night made me feel sick to my stomach. there's no real way to look at that as anything but racist and tone deaf. they could have handled gordon's character far better. at the time, i said that i was glad that the show didn't show its white protagonists shooting a black man in cold blood, but the last episode really negated that. ugh. i don't know if i feel good about rating this episode quite honestly, because it was really the best and worst of supernatural.
11 - playthings
HOLY FUCK. WHAT CAN I EVEN SAY THAT HASN'T ALREADY BEEN SAID. it's a homage to the shining and also like. thee wincest episode? how am i supposed to be normal about this. 100/10
12 - night shifter
i'm so glad they brought the shapeshifter mechanic back, but i don't think it was done as effectively as in skins 1x06, but maybe i just have a fixation on the erotic. anyway. i kind of struggled with the setup for this, because while it is cool, it doesn't feel as classically supernatural to me. calling sam dean's bonnie to his clyde? insane. 7/10
13 - houses of the holy
i don't really have anything coherent to say here except sam winchester prays every day. amen. 8/10
14 - born under a bad sign
ohhhh the concept of this fucked so hard, but the pacing was just really off. it felt like simultaneously this episode should have had more time with this story, but on the other hand i don't know if it should have lasted two episodes. lost time is one of my favorite tropes, and the tension that comes with demon!sam is fantastic. i just wish that this episode had hit harder for me. 7/10
15 - tall tales
i said in my liveblog that this episode felt like that one episode of merlin where gaius is possessed by a goblin, and i stand by that. honestly i understand the need for there to be lighter episodes with less heavy stakes, and it was fun to see how the brothers saw the same events from different points of view, but this episode was kind of a low point for me. it was fun, but nothing extraordinary. i did really like the detail of the trickster getting away at the end. that was fun. 6/10
16 - roadkill
okay i did not expect this episode to tear my heart out. i really liked this, i thought it was startlingly sweet and sad. mike flanagan wishes he could make ghosts realizing they're dead this good quite honestly. 10/10
17 - heart
what the fuck! 10/10
18 - hollywood babylon
this was a lot of fun! this show likes to play around with meta a lot, and i think this was probably the most well done example of it thus far. it felt like the showrunners were poking fun at themselves more than anything, which i found pretty neat. 7/10
19 - folsom prison blues
first of all. you can't fucking name your episode folsom prison blues and not even play a johnny cash song. that's not how that works. it has some genuinely fun stakes and doesn't handle the prison aspect totally awfully. we also got an alice in chains needle drop! rooster was completely misplaced contextually, but aic's one of my favorite bands and i'm just glad we got it. 7/10
20 - what is and what should never be
what the fuck part two. dean winchester breaks my heart. 8/10
21 - all hell breaks loose (part 1)
HI UH THIS IS PEAK TELEVISION. I FEEL. HUUUUUGH. they really did it! they spent the entire season telling us that sam was going to die and then the crazy sons of bitches did it! i also really genuinely enjoyed the premise, as well as the ava reveal (katherine isabelle carried), and ash and andy made me so sad. fredric lehne is pure ice as azazel. delicious episode. 10/10
22 - all hell breaks loose (part 2)
this episode made me want to commit atrocities and i'm fine. dean winchester's constant willingness to sacrifice for the ones he loves because he's so deeply convinced that he's let them down makes me want to gnaw off all my fingers. sam's maybe come back wrong? incredible. JOHN WINCHESTER WITH A STEEL CHAIR. i'm addicted to this show. 10/10

Hellsite Nostalgia Tour 2023 Day 207
King of the Damned
Truly, I could not have planned this weekend of HNT better. Weâve got David Tenant back tomorrow AND Metatron trying to convince an angel to help him fix heaven in TWO seriesâŠon GO2 release weekend
âKing of the Damnedâ
Plot Description: Castiel captures one of Metatronâs angels and asks Sam and Dean for help. Meanwhile, Abaddon demands that Crowley help her kill Sam and Dean
Would I Survive the First Five Minutes??: as far as I know, I have no connection to anyone Abaddon personally wants dead, so I might be alright. That said, if she decided to kill me, sheâs more than welcome to
OhâŠthese are all angels, andâŠthis oneâs being STUPIDLY braggy
Right? Like, donât go around bragging about how youâre the right hand man for Metatron. Most angels donât like him
Iâm tired of Cas being forced into leadership roles. He fucks it up every time, but angels canât help but want to follow him.
Cas showing affection still makes my heart melt. Omg. Please. Saying another angel can âbe a little stuffy.â
Iâm never going to be 100% comfortable with the interrogation (*coughtorturecough*) scenes, but now that the Mark of Cain is amplifying Deanâs actions, Iâm even less comfortable with them
CROWLEYâS IN CLEVELAND?!?! âŠthatâs not a real hotel here. (So after some research, looks like itâs modeled after a hotel that used to be here? Or is under a different name here and is super haunted apparently?? Because I needed to make sure before I posted this)
âNobody in the history of torture has been tortured with the torture youâll be tortured withâ real dialogue from Crowley
OhâŠthat guy from the first five minutes was Crowleyâs son. Ooooo, ok. I take it back. Abaddon can have a scene where sheâs doing the torturing, as a treat
Omg. Forget playing whatever music for a Victorian orphan. Just be the king of hell, have your son from 200-some years ago get brought to 2015 or some shit and tell him you traded your soul for three extra inches of dick. Itâs even better
OkâŠI THOUGHT they left him fineâŠgood to have that confirmation (Iâve been drinking wine so itâŠwas a possibility i missed something)
Oh!! We get (possibly) our first mention of Rowena, Crowleyâs mom!!
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SHIP, CROWLEY??
The way Cas sees some of himself in Gadreel is kinda cool
Uh oh boyyyyyyys, you got a hellhound on your tail?? Omg the way Crowley effortlessly controls it, but likeâŠwhy was it there in the first place?
Idk I think Sam should take the blade. Like the few moments a different Sam had the One Ring. What if we get a âI canât carry it but I can carry youâ moment for these two??
Wait. Is Crowleyâs sonâs name actually Kevin? That makes all his torture of Kevin Tran even more SO SICK AND TWISTEEEEEEED. SICK AND TWISTED.
Also, whoâs gonna tell this guy heâs already IN and actually PAST âthe coloniesâ
Oh hell yeah!! I love that Abaddon pulled the âdevils trap bulletâ trick on Crowley while waiting for the Winchesters (I will be so sad to see her go and for however the boys take her outâŠ)
I may not go downtown a whole lot but thisâŠdoes not look like Cleveland
âŠbut the power of the One Ring First Blade cannot be denied
Please tell me heâsâheâs gonna Jedi mind trick the Blade into his hand.
Please donât show her too muchâŠI know the First Blade is corrupting Dean but he didnât need to stab her that much. So thankfully they didnât linger on the wounds. RIP Abaddon đđđ you will be sorely missed by me
GAVIN MAKES WAY MORE SENSE FOR AN OLDE TIMEY NAME!!!! But it did sound a LOT like Kevin
Jesus, Deeeeeean. Youâre allowed to go it alone but Sam always needs your help and intervention?? The way youâre saying this like yâall could afford to NOT close the gates of hellâŠIâm usually a Dean apologist, but Sam is in the right here.
Well, now youâre just being an ass by not allowing the blade out of your sightâŠ
#hellsite nostalgia tour 2023#contains spoilers for good omens 2 in the first paragraph#this also got long because I had some wine

On your comments about Jack: ye-es, in the sense that Jack is a character who definitely deserved better than he was treated by the characters. The way Dean especially treats him reflects very badly on Dean, no question. But, speaking as a viewer, I think the perspective needs to shift a little bit.
To me, Jack is Dawn from Buffy, or Scrappy Doo. Heâs an (in my opinion) irritating kid who is introduced out of nowhere to be both super vulnerable and super OP, and the jeopardy is centered around him in a way that has nothing to do with his actual character or relationships. Heâs mostly around to be cute and to solve or create problems â he never has any firm character arcs or goals of his own, nor any deeper purpose in the meta narrative. In this way, heâs a miss for SPN, which focuses heavily on conflicts as metaphors for real life.
Mary fits so much better in that framework, and introducing her as a developed, flawed person works really well with the narrative. It is easy for us to care about Mary, both as the dead perfect mother on the pedestal and as the flawed, human woman who could not live up to her sonsâ expectations. That connection is built into the core of SPN, and was developed over years, even before she was a character. When she was added, she was given depth and nuance organically, and treated as a flawed, complex character rather than as a plot device or a contrivance. She was given a voice and independence, and became a powerful metaphor for developing new understandings of our parents in adulthood, as well as an interesting and well-rounded character. You care that sheâs dead, not just because Sam and Dean are sad, but for the loss of her development and the potential she offered. So, in that sense, I think a lot of people were frustrated that she died essentially fridged for a second time, and especially in service of the arc of a weaker character.
And like, youâre right, no one can figure out if Jack is a toddler or a teenager. Heâs both and heâs neither, because heâs never anything consistently and his character arc is always âwhatever the plot needs it to be.â Every episode is different. Is he Deanâs sunny opportunity to be a parent and make up for his dadâs shitty parenting? Yes! Is he also Deanâs worst failure and a reminder that he has done many horrible things, including to âinnocentâ children? Yes! Is he Casâs child? Yes! Is he Deanâs child? Yes! But also, no! Is he Samâs child? Yes! Is he a lonely teenager who does terrible things? Yes! Is he a totally innocent little lamb who doesnât get why what he is doing is wrong? Yes! Is he the most powerful being in the universe? Yes! Does he need everyone to take care of him? Yes! Is he just along for the ride? Yes! Is he responsible for his actions? Kinda??? Sometimes??? What is he???
Mary as a character is narratively cohesive and fleshed-out. Jack is a mishmash of confusing whateverâs that all add up to a frustrating plot device with no consistent traits to latch on to. Everything that fans like about him (cute outfits, gender play, well-developed parental bonds with the characters) is fanon. So, yes, the narrative prioritizes Mary. Many fans prioritize Mary, at least enough that Deanâs most heinous acts barely register. To the narrative (not to Cas, which is a totally different situation), Jack is only barely more of a character than Emma Winchester, who Sam killed without uproar seasons earlier. Heâs been around longer, but heâs equally not really real.
I debated on responding to this because, to tell the truth, I think we fundamentally disagree on a number of subjects and, as they say, true insanity is arguing with anyone on the internet. However, you spent a lot of time on the above and I feel it's only fair to say my thoughts, even if I don't believe it will sway you any more than what you said changed my opinions.
I'm assuming this was in response to this post regarding how Jack's accidental killing of Mary was treated so severely by the brothers, particularly Dean, because it was Mary and, had it been a random character like the security guard in 13x06, it would have been treated far differently. However, then the argument becomes less about the reaction of the Winchester brothers to this incident and more the value of Jack or Mary to the audience.
I believe we need to first admit that both characters are inherently archetypesâMary as the Madonna character initially then, later, as a metaphor for how imperfect and truly human our parents are compared to the idol we have as children, and Jack as the overpowered child who is a Jesus allegory by the end. Both have a function within the story to serve the Winchester brothers, through whose lens and with whose biases we are meant to view the show's events. We also need to admit that the writers didn't think more than a season ahead for either character, especially since it wasn't initially supposed to be Mary that came back at the end of season 11 but John, and they only wrote enough for Jack in season 13 to gauge whether or not the audience would want him to continue on or if he needed to be killed off by the end of the season. Now, I know we curate our own experiences online which leads to us being in our own fandom echo chambers, however it is important to note that the character was immediately successful enough with the general audience that, after his first episode or two, he was basically guaranteed a longer future on the show.
I have to admit, Iâm not entirely sure why the perspective of how his character is processed by some audience members versus others has any bearing on the argument that he deserved to be treated better overall by the other characters especially when taking their own previous actions in mind. Iâm not going to tell you that your opinion is wrong regarding your feelings for Jack. Itâs your opinion and youâre entitled to it, it harms no one to have it and express it. My feelings on Jack are clearly very different from your own, but this is really just two different people who processed a fictional person in different ways. I personally believe he has a purpose in the Winchestersâ story, including Castielâs, as he reflects certain aspects of all of them, gives them a way to explore their own histories through a different perspective, and changes the overall dynamic of Team Free Will from âsoldiers in armsâ to a family (Mishaâs words). In the beginning he allows Sam to work through his past as the âfreakâ and powerful, dangerous boy wonder destined to bring hell on earth. With Dean, his presence lets Dean work through his issues with John and asks whether he will let history repeat itself or if heâll work to break the cycle. Regarding Cas, in my opinion he helps the angel reach his âfinal formâ of a father, member of a family, lover and protector of humanity, rebellious son, and the true show of free will.Â
From strictly the story, he has several arcs that work within themes explored in Supernatural, such as the argument of nature versus nurture, the question of what weâre willing to give up in order to protect something or someone else and how ends justify the means, and the struggle between feeling helpless and powerless versus the corruptive nature of having too much power and the dangerous lack of a moral compass. His goals are mentioned and on display throughout his stint on the show, ones that are truly relatable to some viewers: the strong desire to belongâthe need for family and what youâll do to find and keep it.Â
With Mary, we first need to establish whether the two versions of her were a writing flaw due to the constant change in who was dictating her story and her relationship to the boys, which goes against the idea that her characterization was cohesive and fleshed-out but, rather, put together when needed for convenience, or if they both exist because, as stated above, we are seeing the show primarily through the biased lens of the Winchester brothers and come to face facts about the true Mary as they do. Like I said in my previous post, I donât dislike Mary and I donât blame her for her death (either one). However, I do have a hard time seeing her as a more nuanced, fleshed-out character than Jack. True, a lot of her problems are more adult in nature considering she has to struggle with losing her sonsâ formative years and meeting them as whole adults she knows almost nothing about, all because of a choice she made before they were born.Â
However, her personal struggles being more âmatureâ in nature (as they center primarily on parental battles) doesnât necessarily mean her story has layers and Jackâs does not. They are entirely different but sometimes interconnected in a way that adds to both of their arcs, like Mary taking Jack on as an adoptive son which gives her the moments of parenting she lost with Sam and Dean, and Jack having Mary as a parental figure who understands and supports him gives him that sense of belonging he had just been struggling with to the point of running away while he is also given the chance to show âeven monsters can do goodâ.Â
Iâd also argue that Jack being many ages at once isnât poor writing so much as a metaphor for how, even if youâre forced to grow up fast, that doesnât mean youâre a fully equipped adult. I donât want to speak for anyone else, but I believe Jack simultaneously taking a lot of responsibility and constantly trying to prove to others heâs useful while having childish moments is relatable to some who were forced to play an adult role at a young age. He proves a number of times that he doesnât need everyone to take care of him, but he also has limited life experience and, as such, will make some mistakes while heâs also being a valuable member of the group. Jack constantly exists on a fine line in multiple respects. Some may see that as a writing flaw but it is who the character was conceived to be: the balance between nature or nurture, between good and evil, between savior and devil.Â
Now, I was also frustrated Mary was âfridgedâ for a second time. It really provided no other purpose than to give the brothers more man pain to further the plot along. However, this can exist while also acknowledging that the way it happened and the subsequent fallout for Jack was also unnecessary and a sign of blatant hypocrisy from Dean, primarily, and Sam.Â
And, yes, Jack can be different things at once because, I mean, canât we all? If Mary can be both the perfect mother and the flawed, independent, distant parent, canât Jack be the sweet kid who helps his father-figures process their own feelings on fatherhood while also being a lost young-adult forcing them to face their failures? Both characters contain multitudes because, I mean, we all do.Â
I can provide articles or posts on Jackâs characterization and popularity along with Maryâs if needed, but for now I think this is a long enough ramble on my thoughts and feelings. Iâm happy to discuss more, my messenger is always open for (polite) discussion. Until then, Iâm going to leave it at we maybe agree to disagree.Â

Thran-duilsâ heavily encouraged dark!character writing challenge
Iâve wanted to host a writing/prompt challenge for a long time but Iâve always been too nervous (itâs a perpetual thing lmao). Well, I am taking the dive! Rules and all the information below the cut!
Credit to @santacarlahorrorshow for the lovely header! <3
RULES
1. This challenge is 18+. Seriously, donât be a dick and ignore this rule.
2. Following that, all characters and reader insert are to be 18+
3. I really, really, really encourage dark!characters or dark!reader or both (soft!dark, dark, heavy!dark) for this but they do not have to be if that makes you uncomfortable. A lot of these prompts are going to be leaning towards dark but there are ways to not utilize them that way Iâm sure!
4. These fics are to be reader insert.
5. Fandoms accepted are: Supernatural, Marvel, The Walking Dead, and Lord of the Rings verse (Iâm begging for some Thranduil here lmao no shame).
6. All characters welcome! But please do not use real life actors for this!
7. Please do not write beastiality. Thatâs really the only thing Iâm gonna be like âplz donâtâ kink about.
8. The fics for this must be new, not adding to an already existing story. They can be drabbles, one shots, or a starting chapter for a new series.
9. I went back and forth about this but I think I am not going to put a limit on how many people can choose a prompt. This may come back to backfire on me but one prompt just might be popular and it would be fun to see what variations can come from it!
10. Send me an ask with your prompt you would like and character/s. I will tag you next to the prompt.
11. If you need to back out of the challenge, send me a DM and I will remove you. Things happen!
12. Make sure to tag your fics appropriately if they are dark! Not only does this help people avoid triggers but also youâve done your due diligence to tell people to gtfo and if they donât, well, then thatâs on them.
13. You do not need to be following me to participate!
14. Please tag the fics as #thranduilswritingchallenge and also tag me to make sure I see it!
15. For lyrics and quotes, please use them in the fic! If thereâs breaks in the lyric, feel free to break it up in the fic though. Situations are for encouragement. I did edit one lyric, Olivia OâBrien. I put the songs next to the lyrics in case you want to listen to the song.
16. The deadline for this challenge is September 4, 2021. I will make a masterpost and I will post it either 9/5 or 9/6!

9. Twenty years old : Come what may
Readerâs Pov
She opened her eyes in a gasp, almost like she had slept holding her breath. She put her hand on her chest and immediately, the smell of the bunker calmed her.
This was no Hell, and even if it had been, the Winchesters had made sure Hell would never be what it was before : No Lilith or Alastair, no Lucifer, no knight of HellâŠ
She let go of the pillow she was holding like she once used to hold Mister Teddy bear; and looked around at the grey room. A little smile appeared on her lips : Everything was perfect.
She didnât own anything, since Lucifer didnât really let her pack before locking her back in Hell, but Dean had made sure that her room was welcoming enough. A little alarm clock on the nightstand, next to her glass of water and little bag of candies, a few books behind her bed, because she had always loved books so much ; he had also given her a few extra pillows.
She looked at her open closet, smiling at the memory of going to buy clothes with Dean on the second day. He didnât want to take the risk to take her far, so they went to the closest store in Lebanon, a tiny store, where only one pair of jeans suited her, so she had bought two of them, two shirts, a few underwears, and a pair of sneakers. But her perfect items were the one Dean had given her. She really didnât need anything else.
She sat and looked down at her wrists, they were now healed from the deep wounds caused by years of tugging at the chains but a mark was left, a scar. She rubbed her thumb on it, wondering if it would stay, thinking of the books she had read about those people who suffered slavery, their scars couldnât disappearâŠ
Her eyes wandered in the dark, and the red light of the alarm made her frown, she shivered.Â
6:28 am.
That meant the bunker would probably be silent... And silence wasnât her favorite sound.
She got up on her tiptoes, tugging at Deanâs t-shirt to cover her panties. And, as discreet as she used to leave her princess room with her teddy bear in her hand, she sneaked out.
No blood all over the corridors and no scream anywhere. Dean wasnât being tortured, he was sound asleep in a bed, not even too cold or too hot, just perfectly surrounded by pillows and safe.Â
A sound caught her attention in the kitchen, the calming, already familiar sound of the coffee machine in the morning, and the intoxicating smell that came with it.Â
A light smile on her face, still on her tiptoes, she walked to the kitchen to see who was at the origin of that comforting morning sound.
âHi Samâ she smiled, when he appeared in her field of vision.
âOh, hi Fireflyâ he said, immediately correcting himself. âY/n.â
âYou can call me thatâ she smiled sincerely, earning an awkward chuckle from him. âIs Dean still sleeping ?â
Sam nodded and handed her a coffee, she took it and started blowing on it. The feeling of the flavored steam on her face was one of the things she loved so much about life. One of the million things.Â
âD-Dean told me about what youâve been through to lock Lucifer, and save us all, and me, from his crueltyâ she started hesitantly. âI know it isn't worth much next to what you had to live but⊠Thank you. Thank you so much.â
His eyebrows raised a little, and he looked down while nodding.Â
âNo, it- it means a lot actuallyâ he said. âThank you for helping my brother in Hell.â
âI didnâtâ she answered right away. âI tried. But he still got tortured everyday, he still had to bleed to death on that concrete floor; cold as death or hot enough to make the blood puddles boil⊠And I still slept in a bed.â
Sam frowned, biting the inside of his cheek once or twice.Â
âYouâŠâ he finally spoke. âYou had more than your share of horrors. You canât blame yourself.â
She smiled kindly, she wasnât ready to stop blaming herself, and as long as she would hate her kind, or at least half her kind that much, she couldnât really forgive herself. But she had tried, and she was holding on to this.
âIâm going to get back to bed, with Deanâ she stated. âUnless you need me for anything.â
âO-okayâ he said, surprised, blinking a few times. âNo, I dont⊠Be careful though, Dean is an angry sleeper.â
âHe wasnât angry last morningâ she shrugged and left the kitchen still on her tiptoes, her mug close to her face.
She pushed the 11 door slowly, immediately smiling at the strong smell of Dean filling the room. He had been sweating, the room was a little warmer than the corridor, like his body had created a lot of heat during the night.
He was sleeping on his back, the covers crumpled next to him, his black t-shirt bunched up, slightly showing his lower stomach.
She entered slowly, carefully closing the door behind her. She walked to the nightstand to put her coffee there, Dean loved the smell of coffee waking him.Â
Then she put one knee on the bed, then the other, to join him in the middle of it.Â
âItâs meâ she whispered when he reacted in his sleep to her movements. âItâs me Dean.â
She laid next to him , not daring to touch, just enjoying him being so close.
âMorning Fireflyâ he grunted, stretching his arm to reach the first part of her he could.
His hand landed on her bare thigh, grasping it to bring her closer.
Her hand flattened on his chest and her leg snuggled above his, his soft blond hair tickling her ankle. She looked up at the side of his face, her lips against his shoulder.
âIâm going to get upâ he said sleepily.Â
âYou donât have tooâ she whispered, lifting her arm to stroke the hair on his temple.Â
She had held him so often, she had stroked his hair countless times⊠But now that it wasnât to escort him to his millionth death, everything was different, a true Heaven.
âYeahâŠâ he said, wrapping his arm around her. âSo tell me more about Sue.â
She smiled wide. For once, she also had stories to tell, she could finally debate about the best songs of Led Zeppelin -she hadnât forgotten one- and tell him what food she liked the most.Â
 Deanâs pov
The bar was not too busy, and just the good, enveloping amount of loud.Â
Sam kept looking around worriedly, like some monster was going to show up to hurt them because he had recognized her. But Dean was unfazed, sipping at his beer, his arm on the back of her chair. He had seen her power, and now he was sure of something : Not much could really hurt her, and if anyone tried, he would just rip them like he did Death, Abaddon and Lucifer. Nothing would stop him.
âI was so drunk !â she laughed out loud, telling her story, joy lighting up her whole face, her entire body living her words.
He smiled, engrossed by the sparking in her eyes.
âSounds like a great eveningâ Sam nodded.
âYeahâ she said. âIt was the first night I knew exactly where I was going to sleepâ she added with a serious shadow on her face.Â
Dean wrapped his arm around her and used his big hand to put her head on his shoulder. She sighed in content and put a hand on his chest.
They stayed like this for a few moments before she got up.
âI need to pee, Jesus beer !â she said before she left.
Dean watched her leave, drinking a sip of his beer. His flannel made her look small, he remembered how her dresses used to make her so tall.
âYou just let her go by herself ?â Sam asked.
âWhat ?â Dean gave him a mocking face. âI know she is not a big fan of loneliness but Iâm pretty sure she likes to be there alone.â
âSomeone could recognize herâ Sam insisted, ignoring his brotherâs comment.
âI gave her a phone, a necklace with sigils to keep her hidden, put a tracking chip in her shoe⊠You heard what Billie said, no one can recognize her, she learned to vanish into the crowd when she faked her death, her powers are hiding themselvesâ he stated in a deep voice. âShe has been a prisoner all her life, give her a break.â
âI know, Iâm⊠Iâm worried sometimesâ Sam said. âI really like her, but there are moments when you seem blinded by her, Dean.â
He didnât answer and leaned to the back of his chair, looking at the restroom door to see her come back.
Dean was not blinded by her. He knew what everyone was thinking.Â
They were not hating her, and, after they met her and saw the light within her soul, they even grew pretty fond of her, who wouldnât ?Â
They just didnât understand that bond Dean and her had, no one did.Â
And Dean himself knew it was strange. He had seen her grow, and she had seen him die a thousand times. They had fought and hoped together, and they had suffered. What she had seen all of him, kneeling in his guts to hold his hand⊠No one could really understand that.
Having her in his home, in his life, was confusing, scary and disturbing. Thinking so much about Hell was unbearable the first three days, and at some point he really feared that it would stay insufferable. And so he stayed occupied, buying her clothes and some girl products, reading on Cambions, interrogating Demons and Angels⊠Even Billie.Â
But Firefly was not the darkness of Hell, she was the light out of it.
The next three days became easier. He felt relieved, like somehow, his hope being alive was a closure for him. A way to give some of his memories more sense and to let go of a part of it.Â
And so their bond grew. He remembered their kiss, so long ago, and spent a few hours in his bed wondering if their connection was this kind of bond, or not. And obviously, he had no idea. Of course she was pretty, beautiful even, and had the most radiant smile⊠But for now all he could really think, was that he needed her there, and that she needed to live for real.
He was confused, and, the more he was failing, for once, to find the right words to explain to his family why she could sit in the driver seat of Baby and turn on the engine without a flinch of him ; why she would always know when he was cold or hot, hungry or bothered before he even noticed ; how well she could know every details of his story⊠The more their bond made everyone wonder.
Castiel had been the most suspicious, his too serious frown hiding almost entirely the blue of his eyes. He had stared at her, and warned the brothers a hundred times about what a Cambion could do. Sam had reassured him like he could to avoid any poor choice from the angel, and Dean had just ignored him.Â
But when Firefly jumped in the angel's arms, her big eyes wet, thanking him a thousand times for freeing Dean, taking his hand to kiss his knuckles⊠even Castiel didnât seem so sure of her dangerosity after all.
Sam was trying his best to understand what was going on, to hide his worry behind his usual kindness. Firefly coming to their life was even more disturbing than Jackâs birth, because it wasnât new the same way for both brothers.Â
But once again, each time he felt slightly threatened by the connection between the young woman and his brother, she said or did something that showed how admirative she was of him, and how much she was ready to work on earning his trust, and possibly his friendship.
Jack was never worried, but curious, somehow craving answers about himself in the being that was both so opposed and so close to what he was.
She finally came out, meeting his eyes the second she passed the door and grinned at the music playing. She stopped in the middle of the bar, slowly swinging on the blues notes of guitars, her now shortened but still pretty wild hair nonchalantly moving on the red and black flannel, her hips moved by invisible wavesâŠ
And thatâs when Dean knew the bond was indeed Love, and that, even if she needed freedom and to leave for other men, he would never stop being desperately in love with his Firefly.  Â
While his heart was pounding at the realisation, she came closer and took his hand.Â
âDance with meâ she asked him.
Dean gave her an awkward chuckle and he could see his brother smirking in the corner of his eye.
âI donât really da-â he cut off his own sentence and stared at her smile, who was he to put a damper on her mood, how could he resist that smile of hers ?Â
With a little groan he got up from his seat and grasped her hand tighter.
âOf courseâ he went with her to the jukebox, leaning down to her ear and whispering. âWhat song do you want, sweetheart ?â he stood behind her with his hands on her hips, feeling her move underneath his palms.Â
âThis oneâ she put in a coin and as the song started to play.Â
Dean turned her around to guide her to the middle of the floor.
âElvis Presley ?â he questioned, amused, as she put one hand on his chest and another on his shoulder.Â
âYesâ she murmured.âI love this songâÂ
Her head came resting against his chest, making a small smile form on his face at the sweet gesture. He wrapped his arms around her protectively, enjoying the feeling of her against him, ignoring Samâs look, and some other people glare on them. He knew perfectly well how silly they looked, like a prom in the middle of a small town bar. And he didnât care the slightest.
They swayed slowly to the song, held by each other, floating in the song. And after a little while, Dean couldnât help but whisper the lyrics in her ear.
âTake my hand. Take my whole life too. For I can't help falling in love with youâ his lips brushed against the shell of her ear, his nose in her hair.Â
His heart was beating fast, he was even a little afraid she would hear it.
And when she looked up at him, he just fell harder for her. Her beautiful Y/E/C eyes shone in the dim light of the bar, those eyes that could make anything bearable, her smell surrounded him and at that moment it was just the two of them, all he could feel was her and thatâs all he ever wanted to feel from now.
By the time the song slowly came to its end, they both had stopped moving, lost in each other.Â
He cleared his throat and let her go with a slightly awkward smile.
âWe should head homeâ he said with a hoarse voice, his eyes having a hard time not looking at her lips.
âYes, homeâ she smiled as she said it, like she was testing out the word for the first time and liked how it sounded.
And Dean would be wrong if he didnât admit he loved the way it sounded from her lips.
 Reader Pov
Dean parked the impala back in the silent garage. They all got out and made their way inside.
âThank you for tonight, I really enjoyed itâ she told the brothers as her hand rested on the doorknob of her room.
âYeah it was funâ Dean said as he looked at her, his tongue peeked out to lick at his lips, so Y/n knew something was making him a little nervous.Â
âYeah, it wasâ Sam repeated, his eyes flickering between his brother and Y/n.Â
She could see a faint smile on his lips when he wished them a goodnight as he rounded the corner to his room.
âSoâŠâ Dean started. âYou think you will sleep okay, Firefly ?â he asked.
âI will Dean, you too ?â she kept her hand on his chest, the need to touch him and have him close all the time was so strong.
He nodded, smiling at her worried face, his hand pushing a stray hair behind her ear.Â
âYeah, I willâ he whispered. âNo one is going to hurt me, or you.â
She gave him a small smile, reached up on her tiptoes to peck his cheek.Â
âGoodnight Dean.â
âGoodnight Firefly.â
She entered her room, her cheeks hurting from smiling. The entire night she couldnât stop thinking of that one time they kissed, in Hell. It was so long ago and in the heat of the moment, but she cherished that memory like her most precious gift, it had sheltered her from being depressed in the street, and it had kept her sane in the cage.Â
She had been in love with him for so long, she didnât even remember not loving him with all her heartâŠÂ but did he like her that way ? Could he look past the fact she wasnât human ? That she could, like Castiel said, be dangerousâŠÂ
She crawled into her bed with all these questions turning over in her head.
_______________________
A familiar scream woke her.
âN-No stop !â she heard.
Dean.
She jumped up and ran to the room next to hers. She could hear his whimpers through the door, her heart aching at those familiar gasps of pain, she carefully opened it and went inside.
He was sweating, his hands tugging at the sheets, panting and a worried frown on his face. She couldnât stand to see him like this.
She made her way to his bed, sitting next to him to stroke his hair out of his sweaty forehead.
âDean, itâs okay youâre safe.âÂ
She sat up against the headboard and pulled him into her the best she could, his face immediately nuzzled into her chest, looking for safety. Her hand came up to stroke the back of his head, he was shaking. She started humming the song they danced to earlier, and when she did, his hands let go of the sheets and wrapped around her, holding her tight against him as his breathing slowed down.
She could feel his eyelashes brush against her neck as he slowly woke up.
âYouâre safe Dean, I got you. No one is going to hurt youâ she whispered to the top of his head.
âT-Thank youâ his voice sounded just like it did when he was in Hell, right after his body was healed but his mind couldnât yet process what had happened.
âIt was Hellâ she stated, she didnât need to ask, she knew how it sounded, she had grown up with it after all.
âYeah, and then purgatory, Micheal,...â he sighed.Â
She angled her head back to look at him, she could see the weight in his eyes, the horrors he had seen. Knowing he had been freed from Hell was her biggest joy, but knowing he had known more horrors in his life made her both desperately sad, and raging with anger.
âLife has been impossibly hard on youâ she said as she stroked the short hairs at the nape of his neck.
âYeah, you can say that⊠I did some stupid things tooâ he said with a defeated voice.
âIf you do them for the right reasons itâs not stupid Deanâ she told him.
âI⊠I killed people, I used to have this mark, The Mark of Cainâ he swallowed hard. âIt turned me into a demonâ he whispered.
Her throat closed up for a second, she knew of the mark, she read about it when she was looking for a way out of Hell.
âA demon ?â she asked, a little shocked.
âA knight of Hell actuallyâ he said. âI thought of you when I was⊠I- I was horrible, I hurt so many people⊠I was the very thing I huntâ he whispered.Â
âIt wasnât the real you, Deanâ she said.Â
âI know, Sammy cured me. He saved my ass so many timesâ he scoffed.
âIâm so glad you have him. You protect each other...â she inched down the bed to lay next to him, their noses almost touching.
It was just that easy, being with him, that comfortable. He didnât move, he didnât look away, his lips so close to hers that she almost could feel them, his glistening freckled skin roamed by shivers.Â
âIâm sorry I thought you werenât real⊠If I had known I-I would have looked for you, Fireflyâ his voice wavered with emotion.Â
She put her hand on his cheek.
Dean needed comfort and tenderness, he was carrying so much, he always had been so brave⊠Maybe he didnât want any of the tenderness she could give, but maybe, just maybe, what she was craving to give him would actually be a great comfort for him.
âDean. We found each other. Iâm never losing you againâ she whispered against his lips.
âIâm never letting you go eitherâ he moved his face closer to hers, his lips brushing hers.
The tips of her hair started floating a little in anticipation, she could feel the rage she had always contained in herself fall totally silent for the first time, and her powers slightly vibrate at his touch. Her eyes were flicking from his to his lips.
Her heart was pounding in her chest, and she could feel his, and all of him, whole and alive under her touch.Â
How many times she had dreamed of holding him like this, just not to hold him together, to keep his head out of his own blood, but just to feel his hair and his skin.Â
He let his tongue run on his lips, like he did so often, and she thought about kissing him so hard her lips trembled. She thought about the things she experienced without him, even if he never left her mind.
When his beloved lips caught hers in a tender kiss, she closed her eyes again, like she had the first time, to focus on the heavenly feeling of him. But Dean didn't give her time to draw it out.
He moved above her, claiming her mouth deeply, his burning tongue taking advantage of a moan escaping her to find hers. He was so tall and big, his body on hers looked like an eclipse. His broad shoulders rolling to support the weight of his back, giving this man, who already was the most noble, something feline.Â
âFirefly, IâŠâ he stopped, panting above her. âThatâs probably not a good idea.â
He was afraid of breaking her heart, she knew it, he was afraid of making their relationship blurry. He was probably disturbed by their common past. She knew he was troubled, but she wasnât.
âI think we both need thisâ she stated calmly. âItâs a harsh night in the middle of a harsh life, Dean. Letâs just make it softer. Tomorrow, come what may.â
âCome what mayâ he repeated, leaning to kiss her again, his hungry mouth drifting to her jaw and the pulsating vein on her neck.
And Y/n had a thought for that guy she had slept with the first time, how his kisses felt weird and his desire uncomfortable⊠This was different, and new.Â
âWhy are you smiling like that ?â Deanâs soft voice brought her back from her mind.Â
âIâm just experiencing something newâ she whispered, her hands going under his shirt on his lower back to feel the delicious curve here.
âIâŠâ he stiffed a little. âYou told me you had already had sex.â
âYes, I wasnât talking about thatâ she smiled, but his questioning frown didnât fade right away, his body and mind were still on alert from his nightmare. âYou wonât let a smile stop you, will you ?â
âNoâ he almost growled, bending to nibble at her neck again.Â
Her hands slipped inside the back of his pajama pants, happy to find no underwear on her way. She pushed him down on her a little by his ass cheek, fingers digging in his muscles there, earning a low moan against her chest when his hips met hers, and his cock got trapped between them.
His body was desperate, hands trying to touch everything at once, grazing her neck and collarbones, grasping her sides, seizing one of her breasts through her shirt⊠Her eyes opened on the ceiling, and she noticed a few tiny stars floating in the air.
She gasped when she felt his cock twitching, calling for attention on her pelvis, growing between them. That man she had loved for so long, the Prince Charming Sue wished she would find, her Dean⊠feeling desire for her.
Trying to spread her legs for him, she realized her too large pants, the one Dean had given her, was stuck under his strong and heavy knee.
âDeanâŠâ she whined trying to get free.
âWhat is it ?â he lifted his head, his warm green eyes searching her face.
âMy pantsâ she started but he didnât let her finish, moving above her to tug at her pants, taking them off all the way.Â
She smiled looking down, he was kissing up her legs. Her hands reached his head, pushing her fingers through his still sweaty locks. Once again, his hands couldnât have enough, short nails digging in her thighs and going up to meet her panties.
He flattened his large palm on her underwear, covering it totally with a smirk she didnât know yet on his face. She felt small, he felt even bigger.
âCan I touch you ?â he almost groaned against the shivering skin of her thigh.
âPlease doâ she nodded, shyly spreading her legs.
Of course he was talking about this part of her, he had already touched all the restâŠ.
His hand didnât leave her panties going down between her thighs when he could, feeling her folds through the white fabric.Â
And the little stars multiplied.Â
She arched her back, her core tightening in an exquisite pressure. She gasped in a jerk of her thighs, surprised that touches so soft could bring a pleasure so intense. She had never known that. She was aware of everything that was Dean on her, all her senses high on him, and her body reacting to the electricity roaming her whole body.
Love, she thought. It was love making her insides burst in such delicious flames.Â
âOh wowâ he groaned. âYouâre soaking those poor panties.â
And the new grin she had just discovered appeared on his lips again. The tiny stars were now numerous enough to make the ceiling look like a clear summer night.
His lips travelled up to her lower stomach, his nose tickling the skin here while his lips feisted on it.Â
âFireflyâŠâ he whispered before his bright white teeth caught the hem of her underwear, to drag it down with him.
She needed him. She painfully needed to feel him, close wasnât enough, he had to be inside of her.Â
So she sat with her legs on both sides of his strong thighs, making him sit back on his ankles, his knees digging on the mattress, and grabbed his face to kiss him, to feel her hero anywhere she could. He seemed to need the same thing : his arms grasped her ass cheek, carrying her up his thighs to rest on his crotch.
She moaned loud when she felt him, so hard, pressed against her bare folds.Â
âI need youâ she whined. âDean, I need you so much.â
âI got youâ his voice was deep and warm, his parted lips leaving a layer of steam all over her neck.
They were both too eager to wait a second more.
Dean held her strongly with one arm while he almost got on his knees, pushing his pajama pants down with the other hand before he sat on his ankles again.Â
She looked down, her delicate hand reaching between them to wrap around him. He was hard and twitching, but his skin was soft.
âYesâŠâ he moaned.Â
âI need youâ she just repeated while he was panting against her shoulder.Â
Saying that, she lifted her hips slightly and lined him with her to slowly sink on him.
âFuckâŠâ he groaned when the head of his cock entered her and kept gasping and moaning as she took more and more of him.
She hummed at the stretch of him inside of her, her walls throbbing softly to adjust.
The little stars started to fill the room a little more, like hundreds of fireflies surrounding them. But, even if they acknowledged them, they both were too engrossed in each other to really pay attention.
Y/n breathed out in relief, like she had needed Dean inside of her as much as she had needed air all this time. Her head fell back when her pelvis reached his, filled so completely by him.
âFireflyâ he moaned, like it was now the only word he knew.
His hands, still holding her ass cheek, grasped her tighter and moved her on him, making her grind on him hard.
âAH !â she cried out at the pressure on her clit mixed with his cock moving against her walls.Â
Her hips started to move along with his hands, in back and forth moves, in circles, until he started trusting up in a trail of growls and she couldnât move anymore, holding on to him, kissing and licking his neck with a raging hunger.
Hearing his groans and moans, she looked up to look at him, to actually see what pleasure looked like on a man she had seen suffer beyond everything. And it was beautiful.
More than the stars and the sea, more than snow in the trees⊠It was more beautiful than all she had dreamed of when longing for life.Â
The expression on his face could have been confused with pain, but Y/n knew better. His mouth was open and his eyebrows were up above his nose, and the little stars were reflecting in his eyes.
Bending on her, he caught her lips, trying to kiss her during their speeding dance, and failing to just pant loudly in her mouth.
Her whole body was shaking with pleasure, she could feel every inch of him deep inside of her, and her body react to it. Her skin was on fire. In a loud whimper, she let her head fall on his shoulder, her fingers sliding along his sweaty neck.
âLook at meâ he said. âFirefly, look at me.â
With great effort, she looked up, resting her forehead on his, unable to focus on anything else than the orgasm preparing to hit like lightning inside her core.Â
She had felt pleasure before, and even came a few times, but what was growing inside of her was way more powerful than anything she had knownâŠÂ
And when it blew up, she silently screamed, her whole body falling back on the mattress as she clenched around Dean, her thighs shaking, her arms limply falling above her head. He was still trusting inside of her, holding her hips up on him.
âOH FUCKâ he groaned after a few sharper thrusts.
His hips jerked and his stomach and thighs trembled when he came, falling too above her. He caught his body on his arm to avoid crushing her, keeping her up on his lap with the other hand to not slip out of her body just yet.
âFireflyâ he murmured again, in the aftershock of his own orgasm.
âDeanâ she answered in her high.
Her fingers went up, wiping the golden dust, vestiges of the little starsâs explosion, off his shoulder, a lazy smile on her face.Â
After a minute, he carefully moved next to her in a grunt, slipping out to lay on his side toward her. She stayed on her back, in the same position she had fallen too, only her head turned to him to give him a large smile.
âYouâre covered in goldâ he chuckled softly.
âYou tooâ she reached his head to shuffle his hair, but it was too wet and she only spreaded the dust on it. âOh oops.â
His eyes were glowing with joy, roaming her face, a small smile hanging on his lips.
She enjoyed every second of this peaceful moment, knowing too well that it couldnât last. Dean was a complex man, hurt and abandoned too often, he wouldnât let go to a peaceful tenderness so easily.Â
What she hadnât anticipated was how fast his defences would grow back⊠His smile faded and the bliss vanished from his face. Something she didnât like shadowed his features : Guilt.
âFireflyâŠâ he sighed.
âI know, Deanâ she cut him. âThis was one time. This was to feel better. A good moment in a harsh life.â
She didnât want him to feel guilty because of her. He cupped her face and pecked her lips before he grabbed the band of his pants to put it up.
âDo you want me to leave ?â she asked very low.
âNoâ he shook his head right away. âNo stay⊠I didnât say that to⊠you know, but just so you donât imagine that I⊠I just⊠canât really be with someone, and you⊠We⊠are complicated.â
She nodded and turned to her side to take him in her arms, nuzzling on his chest. She could wait for him all her life, she could even wait for something that would never come, that didnât frighten her.
âFall back asleepâ she said. âIâm chasing the demons.â
Deanâs Pov
He held her close as he watched her sleep. A little smile on his face as he was drawing patterns in the golden dust that covered her entire body. She was so precious to him. She was too good for this dark and rotten world.
She was too good for himâŠ
He had never felt this way about someone, this intense feeling, as if all the little stars that flew over his head mere hours ago were now blooming in his chest. But this life didnât allow those kinds of feelings.
A deep sigh left his mouth as he thought of all the people that used to be close to him. Charlie, Kevin, Bobby, Jo, Ellen,... so many of them had met a merciless fate because of him.
Because he was poisonous. He would never let that happen to her.
He looked down at her as he felt her nuzzle deeper in his chest. It was then that he promised himself he would do anything to protect his Firefly. Even if that meant breaking his own heart, because after all...
Wasnât he the biggest danger for her ?

Okay, your tags on The Empty Post have showed up in my notes and I have to ask. Tell me more. Tell me it all. All of the feelings and thoughts about that scene because what Iâve seen so far? Absolute perfection and I agree wholeheartedly.
Thank you! Okay I basically unloaded most of my thoughts in my tags here but letâs go through this one more time. I may add: this was already said a thousand times by better meta writers than me 3 years ago when season 13 was actually airing. And I will ramble a little about Purgatory, too. Now with that out of the way:Â
The Empty. Canonically it is a being, a living immortal being that rules the place or an âanti-placeâ where angels and demons go are sent to when they die to dream of their regrets forever (this sounds awful and like a punishment for dying despite being immortal, for getting themselves killed or something). Also: the Empty was there before Creation, the Nothingness before Darkness and before Light.Â
Okay. But letâs see what other things the Empty represents: lack of anything. Complete nothingness that Cas got sucked into (by Lucifer but also by helping the Winchesters). Now we know that CasâI am afraid I might kill myselfâtiel had his issues, right (I still canât believe that we are praising 8x08 thee Hunteri Heroici for being a filler episode with Cas - which is awesome, donât get me wrong - but we all keep forgetting what he actually did say to Dean there!!! Dean says: are you afraid the angels will kill you if you show up in Heaven? And Cas looks straight into his eyes and says: After all Iâve done, when I see Heaven, I am afraid I might kill myself).
Please remember that itâs not only Dean, Mr. âPurgatory was pureâ. Cas, after all he did in season 6, after his death in s7, after coming back and being literally haunted by everything heâs done, must have felt that Purgatory was liberating, too. It was some kind of an Alternative Universe where he didnât have to face the consequences of his actions. He was free of them. It was literally his escape AND additionally it was (well, according to good old christian lore, maybe not specifically spn lore) a place where you are supposed to atone for your sins so there must have been the feeling of atoning, of making things right without actually doing anything specific, where having to survive and not get eaten by the Leviathans was his main problem (= surviving was just enough, nothing was asked of him), which, compared to all heâs done, wasnât that hard or difficult. He found himself running away from Leviathans which could mirror running away from consequences of his actions - but it was Purgatory, it was at the same time atoning for what he did. It was EASY.
Cas basically confirms that he officially stayed in Purgatory because he didnât think he deserved to go back to Earth and that is true but what he doesnât say is: âPurgatory was pure and easy and kill or be killed and no other worries than that, no thinking, no real responsibilities which actually was a nice escape from the real world after all I did and been through in the past 3 yearsâ. He wanted out, he wanted an easy choice. Okay, maybe he wasnât actively looking for an easy way out but when it presented itself - when they appeared in Purgatory - he took it like a gift. Weâre talking about a character who spent all his life following orders, who finally broke free and found himself completely lost in the freedom of choices, directionless and maybe wanted an escape. He must have felt overwhelmed but all this freedom (which he basically confirms in 6x20 freedom is a length of rope and god wants you to hang yourself with it). I COMPLETELY understand that choice to escape.Â
So in seasons 8-12 Cas has a lot of stuff going on in his head, he gets lobotomized for most of season 8, he is hurt and tortured and treated like shit for most of season 9 and 10 and he ultimately gives himself up to Lucifer in s11 and then he almost dies in 12x12 and he never really got to talk about all of this or work this things out with anyone because Sam or Dean are not really the most talkative guys and Dean in 10x09 basically tells Cas to âlet it go and not think about itâ which is a shitty advice to someone who suffers from some mental issues if I am being honest (this is like. ur depressed? oh go for a run and smile and stop being sad!!! kind of advice if you ask me). So these issues only grow and grow and start eating him up and please remember that at the very same time Cas is falling in love. I said it previously but I think the moment he realizes what he really feels is 12x12 when he is dying. In that moment he is able to name this feeling but itâs of course covered by: âI love you. I love all of youâ.Â
Now in season 12 he finally gets a proper arc with Kelly (god bless her, honestly, she and Cas had one of the most healthy relationships ever portrayed on tv and it wasnât even romantic, I could go off about this but itâs getting really long anyway). So he kind of is on his way to find a purpose again - Dean is saved (from hell, from Michael, from the Mark), so he focuses on Kelly and unborn Jack and maybe in his relationship with her he rediscovers love (not necessarily romantic but he sees how she loves Jack) and he does all he can to protect her from basically everyone including the Winchesters. And he promises he will take care of Jack and then. Then he is killed by Lucifer (shattered at the altar of Winchester because he gets involved in the Apocalypse World because of them while having built something for himself with Kelly and Jack BUT still not having properly processed all his previous trauma).Â
Okay, so fast forward: Cas is woken up by Jack in the Empty. He is of course confused and stuff (we still donât know what was he dreaming about all this time he spent there now that we know this is a place where angels and demons dream about their mistakes and regrets <- fanfiction gap #1). He wakes up, he is âgreetedâ by the Empty and one of the first things he says is that he has to go back because Sam and Dean need him.Â
This is his first, automatic thought - I (probably) donât want to go back, but Sam and Dean need me so I have to, I donât want to go back for myself because I never wanted to since Purgatory but I know I have to. He doesnât even think about Jack in this moment. I... maybe it is a stretch but I sense a kind of fear in these words. Itâs like he thinks: âif I had the chance to come back and chose not to come back from selfish reasons then if the Winchesters ever find out about this they will be angry at meâ. But I might be reading too much into this, but on the other hand Jesus fucking Christ this is precisely what happened in Purgatory. He chose to stay although he had a chance to return and the effect was Dean being mad at him. Talk about trauma--
Then the Empty (who was in Casâ mind) voices his biggest fears:Â
'I know who you love, I know what you fear. There is nothing for you back there. Wouldn't you rather be a fond memory than a constant festering disappointment?'
There is a lot to unpack here because this is the Emptyâs (who, as stated at the beginning can be read as a manifestation of not only death but also Casâ depression and self-worth issues) reaction to Cas saying that Sam and Dean need him. She says: uh oh youâre wrong<3 I know who you love, what you fear, the is nothing there for you, sweetie. Essentially: they donât need you. No one needs you or wants you there. They are better off without you. Wouldnât you rather be a fond memory (of actually being useful as in: saving Dean from hell, helping to stop the Apocalypse, helping to fight the Leviathans) than a disappointment (failing powers, makes mistake after a mistake, chooses to protect the unborn Antichrist rather than killing him before heâs born - and not to make this whole thing worse but this is what Dean has the audacity to say to Cas in 15x03: why if something goes wrong it always seem to be you).
I will now allow myself for some privacy, because I am a person who dealt with these kind of thoughts in my head for years, these are straight up suicidal thoughts: no one needs you, no one wants you, you are a disappointment and if you die you will be fondly remembered, everyone is better off without you. And we know Cas was suicidal because he literally tells us in 8x08 and we have no proof that he somehow got rid of these thoughts, ever. If anything, they were always there, present, if not growing. Thoughts like that donât just disappear. Please remember one more time what was happening to Cas in seasons 8-11. He wasnât healing. He was getting worse, while all this time managing to keep his head above water for someone else, while the guilt was rising and rising.Â
If the Empty represents all his issues: depression, suicidal thoughts, guilt, self-hate, lack of self-worth, and what she offers is: eternal sleep. Maybe not entirely peaceful sleep, but sleep nevertheless, no consequences, no facing your fears, no dealing with anything, an escape, sleep -Â
And she prompts him to stop fighting, to go back to sleep because there is nothing to fight for (now the symbolism of him being waken up by JACK who was his new found purpose just before he got killed), but she makes a mistake to confront his thoughts and fears with him. She makes a mistake of taking a âphysicalâ form, putting on his face and voice his fears. And Cas is a warrior and he kind of hates himself, so his instinct was to fight. Of course it was easier not to think about all of these stuff at all, to push it back, to try to forget. But once he was forced to face all of these? He fought back. AND HE WON!!!!!Â
WHAT A MESSAGE TO SEND RIGHT?!!! You might have all these issues and not want to face them because you feel you will crush under them but look: when you are forced to face them it turns out you are somehow way stronger than them!!! The moment you choose to fight you already won, you are already saved!!! Because ultimately these are your thoughts and this is your mind and you control it, no one else! The moment you decide, you choose, to take control: you win. You are saved because you chose to save yourself because you decided you are worth saving. And the Empty (and everything she represents) immediately gets angry and lets him go, ultimately annoyed because he dared to defy her and she just canât win with someone who decides he wants to be free. WHAT. đđ»Â A. đđ» WONDERFUL. đđ»Â MESSAGE. đđ»
So... Having said all that. There is only one thing left: I have NO IDEA. NO IDEA. HOW HE FOUND THE STRENGTH. TO STAND UP AND SAY THIS:
I'm already saved. You can prance and you can preen and you can scream and yell and remind me of my failings but somehow, I'm awake. And I will stay awake and I will keep you awake until we both go insane. I will fight you. Fight you and fight you for... ever. For eternity.
A FUCKING ICON. STRONGEST CHARACTER EVER. YOUR FAVE COULD NEVER--

Fic: The whirlwind is in the thorn tree
wincest | about 3000 words | R for language and adult themes | characters: sam winchester, dean winchester
synopsis: My first and probably last stab at Wincest. No actual sex, just post-coital angst.
Flowers in the Attic is a cheesy gothic novel featuring four children who are locked in an attic by their scheming mother who hopes to hide their existence; the oldest son and daughter eventually begin an incestuous relationship.
The title is from "The Man Comes Around" by Johnny Cash, which I never heard until recently but am now obsessed with.
. . .
Part 1: Dean
It doesn't start with romance or lust. It doesn't start with that little flash of bare skin visible above his jeans when he raises his arms (it makes you crazy and you don't know why; you see him shirtless all the time but for some reason that little strip of skin that isn't meant to be showing just brings you to your knees). It doesn't start with you staring at that perfectly sculpted spot at the base of his throat and finally setting your mouth to it and marking him up the way you've dreamt about for years (you've bruised him when you were sparring, and you've battered him in anger, but you've never left a mark for the purpose of saying hands off, he's mine and oh, what you would do just for the chance). It doesn't start with you too drunk to keep holding it all in and Sam too drunk to say no (you would never, you would never).
It starts with terror. Pure balls-to-the-wall terror that you're about to lose him. A horribly fucked-up hunt where you almost die, but more importantly, you almost watch Sam die, and you stumble into your motel room, both still out of breath, still not quite sure what happened out there, and you're checking him for injuries and every breath is a silent mantra, I almost lost you, I almost lost you, and nothing is enough, you want to crawl under his skin, you want to open him up and cradle his heart in your hands to make sure it's still beating, you're holding him tighter and tighter and he's clutching you just as tight, looking into your soul with those big wet eyes and saying âDean, Dean," like your name itself is a prayer, a request. A plea. Whatever he is pleading for, you will give it to him. And it turns out the only thing he wants is all of you.
Which is convenient. Because the only thing you want is all of him.
. . .
But then comes After, and you have to face what you've done.
When you wake up (his arm is still flung over you, it's so wrong, it's so wrong), you quietly crawl out of bed and hurry into the shower. There is no water hot enough to scrub you clean, no soap strong enough to wash away your sins (watch out for your brother, it's your most important job). When you give up and turn off the water, you realize you didn't bring any clothes to change into, and you sure as hell weren't wearing any when you fled into the bathroom. There's nothing you can do but wrap a towel around your waist and hope he's still asleep.
He's not. He's sitting up in the bed you shared. His hair is a tousled mess, a silky brown cloud, and your fingers twitch with the craving to be tangled in it again. He doesn't look disgusted, or repulsed. He looks⊠hopeful. Like he hasn't caught on yet that you are a monster.
(He will be the death of you.)
(He is your reason for living.)
You sit on the other bed and try not to stare at that hickey that you finally managed to put at the base of his throat. (There are other marks. Don't look at them either.)
He speaks first. "Look, I know this is some crazy Flowers in the Attic kind of shitâ"
"Oh, this is so much worse than Flowers in the Attic."
"Why?" His brow furrows. "Because it's gay?"
Which stops you in your tracks, because of course that's not the problem. But also because you haven't even thought of this as gay. It's not that you're interested in guys. You're not thinking about random guys when you jack off in the shower, or when you can't fall asleep, or when your life sucks and your heart hurts and you need an escape. It's not guys. It's not anyone else. You've chased a lot of tail over the years, trying to convince yourself otherwise, but it's just Sam. Only, always and forever, Sam.
But now he's looking at you like you're some kind of monster, like being a homophobe is somehow worse than being a sick bastard who wants to fuck his little brother. So you quickly say "No, dammit, you know that's not it."
"Then what? Why is it worse?"
And it's not fair that Sam is both your victim and the priest who will hear your confession; it's not fair that you're going to have to say the thing that will make him hate you, make him walk away from you again, but, well. Life stopped being fair when you were four years old. He would have figured it out anyway. He's too damn smart not to eventually realize whose fault it all is.
"It's worse because I raised you, Sam. I did this to you. I made you want this."
"What?" Sam's voice goes up an octave, incredulous. "You're saying you groomed me?"
"Not on purpose! But yeah, subconsciously, I must have done something! I must have screwed you up somehow. Otherwise, you wouldn't⊠there's no way you would haveâŠ"
"Slept with my brother? So there's no way I would have wanted to have sex with my brother unless someone snuck into my brain and planted the idea there? Someone must have made me want it? Is that what happened?"
Oh, Jesus, Sam just needs to stop talking, because he's making it worse. Yes, obviously you planted that idea in his sweet, trusting little head. Who knows when or where or how, but obviously you did that. Obviously you took him, the brother you were supposed to watch out for, you took his innocent love for you and twisted it into something awful and self-serving.
But he's not looking at you like he just realized what a monster you are, like he finally saw the darkness you've managed to hide all this time. He's smiling.
"You're an idiot," he says. "But okay, let's say you're right. Let's say the only reason I would want to have sex with my brother is because someone raised me wrong. Someone screwed with my head when I was little and made me want this. Then who did it to you?"
No, wait. That's not. You stare at him, mute.
"If you raised me to want this," he continues, "who did it to you? Dad? Is that what was going on, all those times you guys went off on a hunt and left me at a hotel? Dad spent the whole time convincing you that at some point you were going to have to throw me on the bed and have your way with me?"
"Dammit, Sam, that's not funny."
"I'm not trying to be funny, Dean. I'm just trying to show you how ridiculous it is to blame yourself. No one made you want it, and no one made me want it. It's just a product of our fucked-up lives. There are no victims here."
Is that possible? You want (so much, so much) to believe it. But even if he's not your victim, he still has to see how wrong it is. You've ripped your heart wide open and he's staring right at its dark, festering core. Surely he sees that.
"It may be a victimless kind of fucked up," you say cautiously, afraid to break whatever spell has been cast. "But it's still pretty fucked up."
"I'm not saying it's normal," he says. "You and me, this is definitely not normal. But we left normal behind a long time ago. We were never gonna have that. And this is something we do get to have."
Oh, okay. Sam can't have normal, so he's settling for Dean Winchester, the world's shittiest consolation prize. Well, that's the only part of this that makes sense. And you're not too proud to accept that role. You look at the carpet (you can't look at him) and nod. He will leave you again someday, when he does find normal, but for now? This is enough. This is still more than you ever thought you'd have. More than you deserve.
Sam throws back the covers. He is still very, very naked. Bruised from the hunt, and bruised from what happened after the hunt. (And so goddamn beautiful. He doesn't even know.) He gets out of bed and sits next to you. Not touching, but close enough that you can feel the warmth radiating off him. When you do finally force yourself to look at him, he smiles at you again, that fond smile that stabs you right through the heart. You would give anything to have him sitting next to you, smiling that smile at you, for the rest of your life.
"You know," he says, "all those years I spent chasing normal, it was because I didn't think I could have what I really wanted. This, Dean. You and me. This is what I want. I wouldn't trade it for normal. I wouldn't trade it for anything."
If that's true. Oh God, if that's true.
"So," he continues, "maybe we just appreciate it. Maybe we hold onto it. I mean. Only if you want to."
Only if you want to. Like there's anything you want more. Sam is offering you all you've ever wanted, and all you have to do is reach out and take it.
You've lost the ability to speak, but whatever words you came up with would surely fuck it all up anyway. You take his hand and entwine his fingers in your own. He squeezes. You squeeze back. It's just one more in an endless history of wordless conversations, but it's the most important one you've ever had. You both sit there quietly for a minute, and you are very aware that you are wrapped in a towel and he is naked and you're holding hands and⊠it's not weird. It's okay. It's better than okay.
"You know," he says, "the most disturbing thing about all of this is that you just admitted you read Flowers in the Attic."
You have to clear your throat before you can answer. "It was a book? I saw the movie on TV once, when I couldn't sleep."
It's a lie. He knows it's a lie. He was there with you, that awful winter in Nebraska, when Dad dumped you at that weird old house for a couple of weeks and the only thing to do was pick through the pile of ragged paperbacks some teenage girl left behind. He knows you read it. He doesn't know you got to the incest scene and tossed the book away, no, no, I would never do that to him. I would never. He doesn't know you picked it up again, later, hoping it had a happy ending.
He knows you're a liar. He knows you're twisted and wrong. He loves you anyway. And maybe you don't deserve it, but you'll take it anyway, and hold onto it for as long as you can.
Part 2: Sam
Something about almost losing Dean puts everything into perspective. And yes, you almost died too, but it's hard to see your own death as comparable. Dean's near-death is what matters, the thing that paints everything in stark black and white.
There's no time to talk, no time to wonder, no time to check each other for injuries and try to figure out how you escaped this time. He shoves you into the Impala and speeds away from the scene, and you stare at his (beautiful) profile and think I can't do this any more, I can't die and not tell you how I feel, I can't let you die without knowing what you mean to me, I can't do it, I won't.
But it's not the first time you've told yourself that, or the second or third. And you know you'll fail, in the end, as you always have. Except. Except that when you finally make it into the room you're both still a little panicky, still having a hard time catching your breath, hearts pounding, and he says are you hurt, are you hurt as he paws at you, and then holds you tight and won't let go (you don't want him to, oh God you don't want him to) and you grab him, hold him just as tight and this is it, this is the moment, use your words, dammit, but all you can do is keep repeating his name like an idiot and you finally just kiss him and it turns out neither of you needs words after all.
. . .
Dean's hasty exit wakes you, and your heart leaps panicky into your throat for a minute. You fucked it up, he's running; all those years you held your feelings in check and now you've fucked it up and he's running. But he simply rushes into the bathroom and turns on the shower. He showers for a long time, which gives you time to think about what to say. Because you know he's going to be freaked out. You know he's going to say this is wrong, this is bad, we can't do this again. But there is no going back now; you can only go forward. You salted and burned just brothers last night. The only option now is brothers plus whatever this is. You'll have to make your way through whatever objections he has.
When he finally comes back into the room, every speck of his normal bravado is gone. He looks frightened and guilty (and beautiful, so damn beautiful, with the morning sun peeping through the flimsy curtains highlighting him in gold, picking out each eyelash as if God himself were directing it) and your heart melts like it always does. You are so fucked.
He clutches the towel wrapped around his hips tightly, and you're pretty sure the only reason he hasn't already put three layers of clothing between you and him is because in his hurry to get into the the shower he didn't take time to grab his armor. So, yeah. He's freaked out. It's okay. You'll talk him down (there is no choice, there is no other option) and it will be okay.
But it turns out you are not at all prepared for what his real objection is. Not at all.
You could tell him the truth. Yes, you made me want you. Just by being you. By being beautiful and brave and smart and funny and strong and exasperating. You made me love you in a way you are not supposed to love a brother, just by being you.
Or another truth is this. You think you were grooming me? When I was thirteen? When I was a gangly, clumsy, morose little barely-a-teenager? Because that's when it started, Dean. It wasn't anything you did. You weren't grooming me, you were busy chasing anything in a skirt. I had just turned thirteen years old and all I wanted was you.
But there is another very important truth, which is that you're both kind of irreparably fucked up. And this is possibly a silver lining to that. The fact that you're fucked up the same way, together.
"I'm not saying it's normal," you tell him. âYou and me, this is definitely not normal. But we left normal behind a long time ago. We were never gonna have that. And this is something we do get to have." He has to see that, right? He has to understand that you two cannot measure yourselves by other peoples' yardsticks.
His reaction is to withdraw a little bit. Does he not believe you? Can he not tell, even now, that you love him so much it burns? You have no choice. There is no going back. You get out of bed and sit next to him. "You know, all those years I spent chasing normal, it was because I didn't think I could have what I really wanted. This, Dean. You and me. This is what I want. I wouldn't trade it for normal. I wouldn't trade it for anything. So, maybe we just appreciate it. Maybe we hold onto it. I mean. Only if you want to."
You gave him an out. You pray he doesn't take it. He doesn't. Thank God (or no, probably not God), he doesn't. You sit next to him, naked as the day you were born, and he doesn't flinch, doesn't lean away, doesn't say no, Sam, this is weird, this is bad, this is wrong. He just looks up at you like he's dumbfounded, but in a good way. And then he takes your hand. He's clasped your hand thousands of times, shepherding you across busy streets as a child, hauling you out of freshly dug graves as an adult. But this is the first time he's actually held your hand, and it feels like something greater; like a vow.
You need to change the subject pretty quickly, before you make a goddamn fool of yourself.
"You know, the most disturbing thing about all of this is that you just admitted you read Flowers in the Attic."
Dean's voice is hoarse. "It was a book? I saw the movie on TV once, when I couldn't sleep."
It's a lie. You know it's a lie. You made sure he saw you reading it, and you watched him pick it up after you were done. You had a thousand imaginary conversations where he said what did you think about that book and you said siblings locked in an attic for years, all they had was each other, it makes sense that their relationship would transform into something else, it wasn't hurting anybody, and after all, incest is only taboo because of the risk of birth defects, and many civilizations actually encouraged marriage between siblings, it's not really a big deal, and he said exactly, especially in a situation like that where they're literally in their own little world, and I've been thinking, and then and then and then.
None of that happened. What happened was he turned 18 and then 19 and then 20 and grew more and more maddeningly insane and reckless and beautiful and you realized that either he was going to die, or he was going to keep breathing but remain forever out of your reach, and either way you couldn't live like this any more.
But now he's sitting on the bed next to you, almost as naked as you are, holding your hand.
"You want to get some breakfast?" he says.
"I would love some breakfast. Let me shower first."
He gently swats you on the back of the head. "Go on then, Princess. Wash your pretty pretty hair."
The knot of fear that's been squirming in your stomach since you woke up quietly unclenches. And for the first time in a very long time, you think everything might be okay after all.

DEANCAS FIC REC
(last updated 7/1)
FINALLY. this is like. just a place for me to rec and write excessively abt the fics i've been reading lately. it won't be organized but it WILL be very earnest and i'll keep it updated as i find/remember more. also i have obnoxiously high standards when it comes to fic so these ARE the cream of the crop, if u will. the god tier. the s tier.Â
very loosely organized into "newer fic" and "classics." these are subjective categories. do what you will
âš = new fic on the list
đ = in my brain rent free!
CURRENTLY READING
these are the fics that iâm currently reading! may or may not get recced. usually i read the first couple paragraphs/lines and if i like the writing it gets bookmarked and put on this list.
lazarus needs a robe of scarlet thread by herrosesneverfall, 90k, canonverse au. dean starts getting stigmata. when i was getting back into spn there were a LOT of religious fics flying around bc that was the Hot Topic of Discussion. this was one of them
Three weeks ago, Dean woke up in a pine box. He thought dealing with the nightmares was going to be the most difficult part of his new life after Hell, but at least they were something he could understand. Something he could deal with. Something he deserved.
Then he began having agonizing visions of crucifixion. Wounds appeared on his body out of nowhere. Wounds that refused to heal and coated his skin with the sickly sweet smell of roses.
Stigmata are said to be the marks of saints, but Dean is not a saint and the wounds are only the beginning.
kingdom come by ahurston, 8.7k, coda to 15x18. cas gets to go home. im gathering all the s15 fix-its to my heart and holding them close
Cas wakes up on the coast of Maine. He makes his way home.
hunger by ellispark, 10.8k, s13 au. dean grieves cas, post s12 finale. perfect writing perfect awful heartwrenching characterization so far on deanâs end especially towards jack. nuanced emotional writing
Dean takes his meal and throws it away, plate and all. He's not hungry. How can he even begin to eat, knowing what he kept from Cas â what he kept from both of them?
They could have had something, and now all Dean has is this gaping, empty hole in his stomach, in his chest, and he has to learn to breathe and eat and move around it.
the law of equivalent exchange by awed_frog, 60.8k, canonverse. cas loving dean in all permutations of humanity, throughout time.
âAnd whatâs the point of it?â
âOf love? There isnât one. Loving is its own purpose.â
NEWER FIC
ânewerâ just means âi discovered it in 2020/2021 after coming back to spn fandomâ so it very well could have been published before 2015 but really whoâs checking. not me thatâs for sure.
đ so says the sword by komodobits, 85k, s4 au. cas guards the michael sword in the beautiful room. this is easily the MOST obvious rec on this entire list but it was the first fic i read when i got back into spn this year and jesus christ it set the bar sky fucking high. the way they create a coherent mythology out of the mess that is spn canon is incredible.
The briefing was simple: âStand guard over the Michael Sword until the battle is ready to commence. Await further instructions.â
Castiel doesnât mind working security duty; he was briefed shortly after the initial salvation of the Sword from the pit, and again before taking up his position. He knows what to do. However, itâs easy to forget that the green room isnât real. Time moves differently there, the space ever-changing to make a prison of mountains, cathedrals, salt flats, orchards, and whatever Castiel was led to believe about Heavenâs greatest weaponâDean Winchester is something entirely unexpected.
assimilation by komodobits, 5.6k, coda to 12x01. mary meets dean and cas and they go to find sam. such good character studies of all three of them. the best mary pov fic iâve read
Mary always thought you were supposed to be able to tell. That you could just look at someone and know they were â you know. One of that sort. Itâs not supposed to happen to her son.
cuckoo and nest by komodobits, 10k, ambiguously canonverse. dean and cas navigate relationship anxiety. cute, in character, and their relationship is realistic and the conflict well-written and emotionally nuanced and really really really good.Â
For a long time, Castiel thought that every earthly possession other than the immediately necessary was excess to requirement. But Dean â Dean who named his car, who keeps a photograph of his mother in his wallet, some thirty-plus years after her death, who still has the crumpled âDo Not Disturbâ sign with a sleeping pelican emblazoned on it from the Microtel outside of Roanoke where he first kissed Castiel, clumsy and unsure, under the unsteady fluorescence of an exhausted bathroom bulb â is sentimental.
It puzzles Castiel, where Dean draws the line between what is meaningful and what it is worthless.
đ one white lie by komodobits, 11k, au. cas panics when trying to ask dean out and has to fake being a jehovahâs witness. itâs adorable and hilarious and itâs been ages since i actually got butterflies at a kiss in a fic but this did it. it did it. it felt like someone swaddled my soul in a cashmere blanket and kissed me on the forehead
Castiel takes a deep breath and rings the doorbell. He doesnât need to run through what heâs going to say â heâs already planned and edited and rehearsed it a thousand times. He is going to ask Dean Winchester out to dinner. If itâs not too forward, heâll say, perfectly charming. You see, Iâve seen you around the neighbourhood and you always seem so earnest and Iâd really like to get to know you betteâ The door swings open, and Castiel panics.
He intends to excuse himself. He means to apologise and come back some other time. However, in a moment of blind fear, what comes out of his mouth instead are the words, âCould you spare a moment for Jesus Christ?â
a crash course in someone elseâs history by annie d (scaramouche), 11.5k, set during s6. cas comes to as his s4 self without any memories of the past two years and has to figure out what the fuck is going on. itâs kind of like so says the sword. youâll know it when you get to it.
Castiel is captured inside a trapping circle of holy oil set by Dean and Sam Winchester. The brothers call him "Cas", claiming that he has amnesia and that he is obligated to help them take down Crowley to atone for his betrayal of them. It's the strangest story Castiel's ever heard, and one he doesn't have time for because he's only just raised Dean from Hell and has work to get back to.
đ cas and deanâs adventures in gardening by ahurston, 19k, post-canon au. a series featuring dean and cas living in the bunker, human. cas is very into plants. i read this yesterday actually and it made me smile SO much itâs just so lovely and sweet. iâm also a sucker for any fic where cas has a garden. he deserves a fucking garden okay
In this post-God world, everything is different. A little quieter, a little softer. Cas grows a garden, Dean cooks, and they take care of each other.
tall grass by aeli_kindara, 57k, post-s12. dean and cas live in the bunker on their own, and cas grows a garden. i did say i love fics where cas has a garden. plus domesticity, plus some good case fic, PLUS dean and casâ relationship is so gentle and good
âI think we should have a garden,â Cas says.
Dean looks up from his beer. He hasnât had that much to drink, but Cas still has a vague look of unreality about him, a splash of living color that doesnât fit in the bunkerâs echoing stillness. Dean didnât hear him coming. A lot of the time, Cas is so unobtrusive it feels like Dean has the bunker to himself, with Sam away.
Dean shakes his head to clear it. âA â garden?â he repeats.
in a week by renrub, 2.3k, post 15x18. cas is in the empty. dean saves him. this is genuinely the best âdean pulls cas out of the emptyâ fic iâve read so far like conceptually this entire thing just fucks. when cas is cycling through the barn scene. god. SO well written
Castiel is outside a barn covered in sigils. He frowns. This isnât right. This has never been something he repented for.
i wonât even wish for snow by annie d (scaramouche), 5.6k, college au. cas goes to the winchestersâ for christmas. honestly scaramouche fics belong in the classics section bc sheâs like an og deancas writer but whatever. mistletoe! banter! good in-character au! this ficâs got it all
Itâs the third year that Castielâs spending Christmas with his best friendâs family, and he expects it to be much like the previous two. Then mistletoe happens.
convenient husbands by annie d (scaramouche), 39k, canonverse au. cas is a phoenix, dean is a hunter. they get married and have a sick psychic bond. unexpectedly fluffy considering how the fic starts and i love the banter so much and dean/casâ relationship gets fleshed out and organically developed itâs very cute
"It's only temporary, right?" Dean says. "Just until you're healed up, and then we'll never have to see each other again. So what do you say, Castiel, do you want to marry me or not?"
cinderwings by bendingsignpost, 181k, cinderella au. cas goes to a masquerade ball to save his people from an eternity trapped in a void. he meets prince dean. i canât tell u how much this fic drew me in - thru good worldbuilding, but mostly thru casâ social awkwardness. like it works PERFECTLY to his advantage in this fic and reading how expertly he manipulates social situations w/o any fucking idea what heâs doing is both hilarious and inspiring
Under the cover of a masquerade ball, Castiel has five nights to recover the key to his people's freedom. The world has changed greatly in the six centuries since their banishment into the void, but the task isn't impossible. Unfortunately for Castiel, this is going to involve talking to people - especially the Knight Prince who has taken an interest in Castiel and his "costume" wings.
as the crow flies by bendingsignpost, 3.4k, au. dean and cas go on a roadtrip. cas has wings! itâs so dreamlike and meandering and the slowburn is so good. honestly it reminds me of stevebucky/stevesam post tws era roadtrip fics if ur hip LMAO
Cross country road trips with Cas are the best.
long-term relationship by bendingsignpost, 2.7k, au. dean and cas have a Serious Conversation about their relationship.
Castiel says, budging over to make room for Dean on the couch, âI thought we should have a serious talk about our relationship.â
Reflexively, Dean laughs.
Castiel does not.
âUh, Cas... you know weâre not dating, right?â
all this and heaven too by ftmsteverogers, 7k, ambiguously canonverse. dean is trans. dean and cas are fucking and lowkey hiding it from sam. perfect character study PERFECT trans dean fic itâs so fucking well-writtenÂ
âHey,â Dean said. âIâm not ashamed of you, okay?â
Cas raised skeptical eyes to meet his.
âI mean it,â Dean insisted.
âI understand you mean it,â Cas said. âBut I donât think itâs any better if youâre only ashamed of yourself.â
đ the love story of the runner up by margo_kim, 4.7k, ambiguously canonverse. cas tries dating other men. bear with me here. this is an outside pov fic from an oc named miguel who is WONDERFULLY characterized and very endearing like i find outsider/oc pov to be on Thin Fucking Ice bc it always ends up as fandom/author self-insert but miguel is his OWN MAN. he gets his own lil arc and everything. dean and cas are concentrated perfectly crystallized versions of themselves and the little glimpses we get of them are amazing. ALSO i wrote like 9k of an spn vent fic (basically the same premise but w an oc named marcus) back in like. freshman yr of hs. so when i first opened this fic i was like what the fuck someoneâs been in my google docs. very weird experience 10/10 regardless
âSo you saw a white man in a trench coat pop out in an alley,â Paul says, âand you thought, what, âI want to see where this is goingâ?â
âIf you get hung up on details like that,â Miguel says, âit will take a very long time to get through this story.â
For a very weird era in his life, Miguel dates an angel who is in love with another man.
sunshine by northernsparrow, 8k, set during s13. dean and cas have a long conversation about their Profound Bond. the description left me off-balance (it really. really truly says âdean is straight in this ficâ like okay bro WEIRD hill to die on) but it pulled through w the relationship study and reassurance and snuggles. a sweet fic
One-shot with a single conversation between Dean and Castiel, set in a late-S13-ish world. Gabriel, Cas, Sam & Dean are all living in the bunker together, Gabe's been cracking certain jokes, Sam's found a certain book, Cas is injured and isnât healing... and it's all making Dean wonder if his angel friend might have some sort of a "bond" with... somebody? Whatever that means.
Maybe it's time for a talk.
đ still life by catchclaw, 16.5k, post-s8. cas, newly human, goes to live on his own for a while. he and dean maintain a relationship thru the phone. this is LITERALLY the only first person fic i fucking respect okay like i was skeptical! i really was! but the pov is PERFECT and also my man kevin tran is in this fic and i love him and miss him very much. oh and cas going off to explore humanity on his own..............perfect arc. very much in character we love that for him
Dean'd always thought that falling in love was a capital letter kind of thing, an Important Event you carved into the calendar of your life and never, ever forgot. But with he and Cas, it wasn't that simple.
itâs mostly cowardice, and bad timing by ferritin4, 1.6k, pre-canon. actually this one is just a dean study itâs not deancas but i spent an entire night looking for it and i need someone else to read it too. dean is smart!!! SAY THAT
Dean gets his GED.
a list of reasons the bunker shouldnât get a sofa by lizbobjones, 5.6k, set during s12. sam and dean and mary and cas haul a sofa back to the bunker. cute domesticity and fluff
Let me count the ways that this is a terrible idea.
no kingdom to come by domesticadventures, 16.8k, canonverse. dean and cas deal with being stuck in quarantine in different ways. this is the one and only quarantine fic iâve read and itâs really good lmao. dean and casâ relationship is so organic and tentative in this one
âWe should fuck,â Dean says.
Cas looks up from where he sits on his bed, hair still damp from the shower, frowning as he places a finger on the page of his book to mark where he left off.
There are a million things Cas could say here; Dean has rehearsed them. After lunch, his restlessness had given way to a vague panic, a dread that matched his every step and crept along with him from room to room. Eventually, he had returned to his bedroom and spent the rest of the afternoon pacing back and forth, playing out all the possible scenarios. When Cas asks him Why? or Are you being serious? or when he sighs and says, in that way he has, Dean, he knows exactly what heâs going to do. Heâs going to shrug casually, like he isnât invested in the answer, like he isnât desperate for an outlet, and say, Why not? Heâs going to raise an eyebrow and say, What, are you not interested? Heâs going to crowd into Casâ personal space, heâs going to shove himself right up in there and whisper Cas against his ear.
Instead, Cas says, carefully, âOkay.â
till the juice runs by deathbanjo, 8.4k, canonverse. itâs like deanâs being cursed to have bad hookups with men. SUCH a funny fic and the deancas tension is so simple and sweet and GOOD. plus cas is so enjoyably characterized here heâs so human and worn in and experienced in his own unique way. perfect use of rowena too
Apparently whoever drew up the venn diagram of Deanâs sex life decided the circle labelled âgood sexâ and the one labelled âsex with menâ should be kept far apart.
turn of the year by kototyph, 3.9k, canonverse au. sam and dean get stuck out in the middle of nowhere on the winter solstice. what i wouldnât give for a full 80k of this verse actually. also i went on a kototyph binge after reading shut up put your money where your mouth is and they have a SOLID spn repertoire
Fifteen minutes later, Dean gets back in the car with empty hands and ice in his fucking eyebrows. âGet the map out,â he says through chattering teeth, sticking numb fingers under his arms.
Sam holds up the battered 1995 Rand MacNally they keep in the side pocket, turned to a page of uninterrupted green. âWeâre going to die,â he announces.
đ bullets in the gun by kototyph, 4.9k, canonverse au. cas is a cop (i know. still) who gets kidnapped by dean in an unfortunate turn of events. GOD this fic is SO FUNNY. casâ canny and strategic escape attempts render him a very active VERY funny pov character plus the hate attraction to dean is PERFECTLY WRITTEN VERY BELIEVABLE. deanâs kindness also shines thru even as he literally holds cas hostage like!!!! PERFECT characterization. both of them are so LIKABLE here. if you read anything on this list read this
âSorry, sweetheart, but Iâm going to need to borrow your car.â
as you will by kototyph, 1.8k, victorian au. cas endures a proposal mishap. itâs cute itâs funny itâs sweet!
"No?" Castiel echoes, dumbly.
and if i was looking too? by kototyph, 2.6k, au. cas is undercover where dean works. this fic is just so cute like. bird angels.................
There are some things Castiel hasn't told Dean, and there are some things he doesn't need to.
the most important thing by northernsparrow, 94.5k, s10 au. amnesiac cas raising claire until he comes across someone familiar. claire is so well characterized here i really loved her arc thruout this fic. she just wants her dad back and u canât even blame her the author rlly does an amazing job creating realistic and heartbreaking motivations for her. oh and dean and cas (esp cas characterization!) are sweet in this but honestly the highlight IS claire for me
Jimmy Novak remembers nothing of the last six years. Reunited with his troubled daughter Claire, he's struggling to raise her on his own. The most important thing is to make Claire happy. But why does he keep having these dreams of wings, and of two men in a black car? (Canon-divergent from S10E11, when we first met Claire again and Dean was still struggling with the Mark of Cain. Takes places several months later).
thereâs only one sure thing that i know by blinkiesays, 20.3k, post-s5. dean goes to help cas out in ohio and they end up building a home together. i love the writing itâs rlly funny and sweet.
Dean doesn't even get halfway through explaining before Bobby starts laughing. When he lets himself think about it for more than five seconds, Dean can almost see Bobby's point: he's faced down demons, witches, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, angels, and Satan himself and now he's been defeated by the God damn Midwest.
đ to an angel, love and worship are the same thing by geminisage, 10.3k, post s15 fix it. dean grieves cas - and then cas gets brought back back from the empty. i didnât have this in my bookmarks so i MISSED it the first time around on this list but this was another one of the fics i came back to spn fandom to. itâs so fucking unique?? it actually reads like spn like i think fic tends to soften dean/cas up and makes them more emotional + emotionally intelligent than is ever shown in the show. here the dialogue/characterization adheres RIGOROUSLY to their communication in canon in that deanâs not overtly emotional, and cas is very reserved. they have to negotiate their relationship exactly like they would in the show. itâs all clipped conversation and anger and hurt and (warning btw) LOTS of internalized homophobia on deanâs end but itâs SO worth it. dean navigating his [GESTURES VAGUELY] everything is compellingly written, emotionally true, and PERFECTLY characterized. cas characterization also amazing like u rlly feel the quiet devoted bittersweet love. ok this was long clearly itâs a good fic go read it now
Just as Dean knew they would, the weeks do stretch into months, and then into a year. Grief never gets easier, Dean knows from experience, but you do get better at it. After all, you can get used to anything.
the violin house by teh_helenables, 8.5k, post-s5. dean and cas build a home after stull. so slow and lovely and sweet and gentle. i need to put this here so that i donât forget it tbh. itâs very much dean as a war wife cas as the husband away on the front
The Apple Pie Life is a slow process, but Dean and Cas are getting thereâuntil Cas is called for battle and Dean is forced to wait.
đ muscle memory by komodobits, 18.9k, au. amnesiac cas wakes up three years in the future with dean in his kitchen. komodobits DOES NOT FUCKING MISS!!! i CRIED at the end of this i had NO INTENTION OF CRYING the rest of the fic isnât even SAD i just had to sit there at the end of it w tears dribbling down my face. INSANE work of art
Dear Castiel,
Hello â itâs Castiel. This must all seem very confusing, and Iâm sorry for that. Dean says to tell you that this isnât some kind of âtime-travel stuntâ, although Iâm sure that wonât be your first thought. I know it wasnât mine. Iâve told Dean to leave now, as this is my notebook and I want everything in it to come from me â or rather, from you. I know you think it's the fifteenth of January, 2010, but it isn't. At the time of my writing this, the date is the fourth of October, 2013. Dean Winchester is your boyfriend of a year and a half, and you no longer work at the library, and in early 2010 you were hit by a car and hospitalised. Iâm sorry.
a.k.a the 50 First Dates Dean/Cas AU where Castiel wakes up on a day just like any other, except that three years have passed without his knowing, and Dean Winchester is in the kitchen wanting to marry him.
donât forget the experience points by annie d (scaramouche), 10.8k, au. cas is samâs work friend, and he and dean get to know each other. genuinely an adorable fic. i adore casâ characterization in this itâs snarky AND awkward AND confident in a way that i absolutely believe he would be if he had 30 yrs of human life under his belt
It's because Dean was an awesome brother than he took such an interest in Sam's new friend. No, really. What happened afterwards was mostly an accident.
actus fidei by manic_intent, 5.6k, canonverse au. deanâs a priest, cas is still his angel. i was HOOKED from the description alone like Thatâs Everything I Love in One Sentence. Cool!!!!!!!!!!!!
On the very first time that Castiel manifests in front of Father Dean Winchester, he gets as far as "Rejoice, for you are blessed-" before Dean shoots him with a salt-loaded shotgun.
not with a bang but a yelp by strange_estrangement, 1.4k, canonverse. team free will leave yelp reviews. this isnât d/c actually itâs just a crack-ish fic but the formatting is cool and the references are SO funny and so well done
What happens when you visit dozens and dozens of motels every year? You leave Yelp reviews.
the courtship of combat by bendingsignpost, 18.2k, medieval a/b/o au. cas is politically coerced into fighting in a courtship melee for prince dean's hand, and he teams up with two unexpected allies to do it. I KNOW HOW THE ABO THING SOUNDS but i swear it's done well - it's by bendingsignpost so ofc he puts his own spin on the premise. im absurdly into it. PLUS jack is in it!!!!!!! it's technically an unfinished series but the first part is so good just on its own
When pressed upon to mate for a political alliance, Commander Castiel dares to refuse his king. As âI do not wish to mate at allâ is clearly the wrong thing to say, Castiel takes the other path and lies. âYou must know my affections lie elsewhere, my king.â
King Michael studies Castielâs face long and hard. Then, with a nod, he snaps his fingers, pointing to Castiel. âThe Winchester omega.â
âYes,â Castiel says with no real recollection of who that is.
The ruse of an unavailable omega works well enough, right up until that omega is no longer unavailable. Then, with what seems to be his entire nation cheering him on toward victory, Castiel must enter the melee to win his mate. Backed by allies, training, and his own natural talents, the only question is how well he can contrive to fail.
four letter word for intercourse by bendingsignpost, 194.7k, au. dean calls a sex hotline. OH BOY solid characterization excellent plot/premise like bendingsignpost is so good at turning absurd premises into realistic, believable fiction. also sex hotline fic is usually a BIG turn-off bc of the power dynamics/one-sidedness of a relationship based on sex work but. BUT. bendingsignpost does it well! itâs not weird at ALL i started reading and was immediately reassured abt its intentions and its plot direction
As a grease monkey turned college freshman, Dean's constantly three seconds away from being stressed out of his mind. It hardly helps that he's finally figuring out his sexuality in his thirties.
What might help with that stress is a little phone number (and a big credit card bill). If he can't figure out how to be bisexual in person, he can at least give it a go over the phone, right?
(It's probably a bad idea, but he really can't help himself.)
the tunnel of love by xylodemon, 21.4k, post-canon. case fic! dean and cas have to kiss on a loveboat to solve a case >:)
"We might," Cas starts slowly, pausing like he's choosing his words. "We might have to kiss."
Dean just stares at him.
when you have a future. by firebog, 17.6k, post-s8. dean and sam and cas learning to be human post-apocalypse. reminds me of robotmangoâs writing! itâs kind of eccentric and very very sweet and funny.
Sam closes Hell. Castiel closes Heaven. The heroes save the day. There's no Heaven or Hell waiting to cause the next big disaster. There's no more end of the world. There's only a squirmy feeling in his chest that feels a lot like freedom. So, now what?
(Things I promise you in this fic: dog poetry, rabbits, and fluff)
six inch heels by alitneroon, 2.3k, canonverse. dean does drag! excellent fucking character study. prose is fantastic
Dean does drag on a whim, and ends up in way over his head.
sharing is caring by gateskeeper, 2.5k, canonverse. five times dean and cas shared something and one time they didnât. look. sometimes u just need some saccharine tropey fluff. itâs VERY well written
Sam knows that Dean and Cas have shared a lot together, but ever since Cas became human permanently, it seems like they've been sharing a lot more.Â
Or: five times Dean and Cas shared something special and one time Dean refused to.
đ empty spaces by schmerzerling, 60k, au. dean has to take care of his dying father, and takes up running to cope. thatâs just the beginning. HEAVY trigger warnings for ED (specifically anorexia) and suicidal thoughts. there is a happy ending, but dean has to fight to make it there. god. okay. this is a dark fic. itâs also one of the most well-characterized fics iâve ever read. deanâs spiral is excruciatingly accurate and written with the kind of wry compassion that comes from either extensive research or extensive experience. itâs also completely immersed in deanâs perspective - deanâs relationship w his dad, deanâs relationship w food scarcity, etc. itâs incredible. itâs kinda scary. itâs deeply sad. cas is explicitly autistic and itâs ALSO incredibly accurate and loving, and makes cas so true to his canon self. ugh. and i burst into TEARS at some of the accompanying art, which is so sparse and lonely and beautiful. 100/10 experience one of the best fics iâve read this year
Dean is fine. The way he sees it, things are simple. He had a house and a family and food in his stomach, and now he doesn't. And yeah, that's a downer, but he's not going to let that stop him from being fine, because he's in control of the situation. He definitely doesn't need anyone to save him. And it's not like the weird guy with the nice butt from down the road is the knight-in-shining-armor type, anyway.
broken road by thegeminisage, 109.6k, 14x13 au. dean makes a wish and gets more than he bargained for. a lot of âjohn comes backâ fics are kinda short on nuance, which this author has talked about a lot - and oh MAN does this fic deliver on nuance. johnâs abuse is absolutely present, but his pov makes him a complex character instead of a flat caricature for dean to reject. and the way this fic resolves really makes it clear that the priority is deanâs emotional well-being over all else!!! this isnât about dean taking the path fandom thinks he should take w his abuser (killing john, punching john in the face, etc), this is abt dean coming to terms w his abuse and finding his own emotionally satisfying way of resolving it. also dean and cas are in an established relationship and itâs very slow and sweet.
A 14.13 Lebanon rewrite. When Dean uses a wish-granting pearl to try and kill the archangel Michael before he can escape the cage in Dean's head, they instead wind up with a newly-resurrected John Winchester.
It's been more than a decade since John died, and a lot has changed: Mary is alive, Sam and Dean have what passes for a proper home in the Men of Letters Bunker, and they're living with angels. John doesn't know angels are real, he doesn't know about the fragile new relationship between Dean and Castiel, and most of all, he doesn't know that Dean said yes to Michael, or that Dean's plan to defeat Michael would send him to a fate worse than death.
Now Dean must contend with both his father asking questions he can't answer, and his loved ones learning about the darker truths of his childhood, all while constantly battling the archangel trapped inside him. But Dean coming to terms with his history may be the difference between this being the beginning of a journeyâor the end.Â
home is not a place by imogenbynight, 6.8k, post-s11. human cas struggles with belonging, and dean struggles with their relationship. this reads a lot like komodobitsâ cuckoo and nest, but itâs its own sweet little thing. they watch movies!!! very cuteÂ
In which Dean is the oblivious one for a change.
love: a retrospective by xylodemon, 40.7k, post-s12. dean tries to deal w casâ absence after s12 and reflects on their relationship thru the years. this was written before s13 aired, so - no spoilers - but jack plays a different role than he ends up playing in canon. itâs kinda fun seeing pplâs theories pre-s13 tbh. makes me VERY glad that they took jack in the direction they did in show. anyway this is THEE definitive âtheyâve been fucking all alongâ fic
Pretending Cas is just his friend has been the only thing keeping Dean's head on straight for years. He never realized how much doing that depended on him making himself scarce in the morning â not until Cas came back and moved into the bunker.
âšđ if it all fell to pieces tomorrow by spocklee, 37k, post-s15 fix-it. cas gets broken out of the empty - and he immediately makes a break for it. new fave fix-it!!!! the writing is so understated and so straightforward - SO in character for cas tbh - that every single emotional beat feels like a PUNCH. and there are so many amazing character moments it made my chest seize the fuck up!!!!! perfect characterization perfect relationship moments perfect cas/jack parenting moments. the yearning over the phone is OFF THE CHARTS and spocklee makes the most of that tension!!!! PLUS old canon characters get to make fun appearances!!!!! i cannot recommend this shit enough
After the Empty, Cas has to spend some time alone. Orpheus tries to convince Eurydice over the phone that itâs okay to turn around now.
âš before and after breakfast by spocklee, 10.5k, post-canon. dean and sam and cas tackle a monster of the week case with unexpected consequences. perfect pov perfect relationship moments SUCH GOOD TENSION. again this writing style just lets the tension dial up to 1000% every word is meaningful and it makes my chest hurt!!! spocklee SHOULD have blown up during the spn renaissance and i STAND by that
The monster of the week is a ghost who hates meat, alcohol, and feeling yourself. Guess who it is during the commercials.
CLASSICS
isn't it cool how every person has diff fics they consider "classics?" anyway these are required fucking reading. if u've been around these will prob be old news.
đ asunder by rageprufrock, 23k, au. dean and cas go to sam's wedding. i reread this once a year like a religious ritual.
Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. (Matthew 19:6)
đ the girlfriend experience by rageprufrock, 15k, set during s5. dean teaches cas how to be human. mostly the sex part. literally the gold fucking standard of s4-5 era deancas fic and for deancas fic in general, personally
While it's not like Dean hasn't had a couple of truly regrettable hit-and-runs in his sexual history, this is probably the saddest fucking thing that has ever happened to him.
okay, cupid. by orange_crushed, 4.5k, au. dean tries to sign up for an ok cupid profile and has a revelation. as soon as i put this entry down i realized this entire fic rec was an exercise in futility, because if i could i'd literally just rec everything orange_crushed/robotmango has ever written. still one of THEE best authors in this fandom. go read all her fics. iâll put the highlights here
"The dating thing?" Dean frowns. "Online dating is for weirdos. Robots. Dudes hanging out in their basements."
"You hang out in your basement."
"I have an air hockey table down there,â Dean says, icily.
đ pwp: pie without plot by orange_crushed and majorenglishesquire, 82k, post-s8. sam and dean and cas quit hunting for a little bit to open a bakery. this is my comfort fic. i love it so so much.
he is in the kitchen with flour on his hands and an apron and there is flour on his forehead and cas leans across the counter and wipes it off with his thumb and dean says "thank you" and cas says "youâre welcome" very seriously and later dean makes apple turnovers and he only ruins them a little and sam realizes itâs not a real hunt like four days into it and he lets dean stay undercover for like a week and a half or longer maybe way longer because he is such a good everything
đ la cucina by orange_crushed, 4k, post-s8. dean gets into cooking for a newly human cas. it's so gentle and loving and kind and makes me tear up every time. YES food is a comfort item and expression of love for dean. no i don't want to talk about it
Dean turns around and Castiel is picking through the jars, turning them over carefully to read the labels, totally engrossed. Dean watches him.
"Is there," Dean says, "uh, anything in there you like?" Castiel looks up at him and then back at the apples, sitting in a basket on the counter in their golden skins, ripe and pretty. Castiel smiles up at Dean.
"I donât know yet," he says.
today, your barista verse by orange_crushed, 13.6k, coffeeshop au. a series of short sweet lovely fics where cas is a barista and dean is a smitten customer. literally the only coffeeshop au i respect
"Is that-"
"My number," says Dean, because he's a fucking champion, he's cool, he's collected, he's Captain Smooth of the USS Smoothtania, that's right. He is definitely not leaning against the counter for moral support. Cas doesn't looked seduced or impressed, though. He does not look like a dude who just met Captain Smooth and wants to ride the loveboat. He looks puzzled.
fata morgana. by orange_crushed, 6.6k, post-s9. dean is the king of hell. bela and cas team up to find him. bela pov. yeah you fucking heard that right BELA POV. BELA AND CAS!!!!!!!!!! makes me lose my mind i love everyone in this stupid desolate fucking hell wasteland.
The endless asphalt and broken road, the empty land and piles of human garbage, the unwanted ends of life, the cracked toys and broken screens and burning cars and gravel. Dean Winchester is the king of hell.
"Oh," says Bela.
That changes certain things.
đ gran fury. by orange_crushed, 5k, pacific rim au. sam and cas pair up in a last ditch mission to save the world. permanently damaged me at age 15 and i've never recovered. major fucking angst warning.
They sit in silence and Castiel passes him the bottle. Thereâs not much left to say. Sam takes a gulp and it burns going down, like the cheap shit it is. He holds the bottle up against the light. He can see the Fury through it, distorted like a funhouse mirror. Sheâs a tomb but Sam loves her. Loves everything thatâs left.
"To the end of the world," he says.
"To the end of the world," says Castiel.
đ shut up (put your money where your mouth is) by kototyph, 24k, au. dean and cas get drunk married in vegas. dean renovates cas' house. this fic is SO MUCH BETTER than i remembered/expected and the entire series is fucking adorable go read it RIGHT now
Dean's done some pretty stupid things, but getting drunk-hitched in Vegas to a colleague he barely knows might just take the cake. His surprise husband, Castiel, is a little weird but likable despite that, and Dean figures theyâll go back to Boston, get a quiet annulment, and go their separate ways. Six weeks later, heâs still married to one of the strangest, most genuine and definitely most dangerously lov-- likable guys he's ever known. Dean doesn't know why or really even how itâs happening, but itâs getting harder and harder to remember that he has divorce papers to file.
not part of the plan by annie d (scaramouche), 338k, arranged marriage au. cas is slated to marry a noble from the winchester house. things spiral out of control. if youâre looking for an extensive well-developed political au, this is fucking it. i love reading about political machinations so this was FASCINATING to me.Â
Castiel's spent most of his adult life keeping his head down and staying out of trouble. This is a deliberate choice on his part, because as a cousin of the King, he'd rather stay unimportant and forgotten. This changes abruptly when King Michael decides that he has a better use for Castiel: he is to be wed to a noble member of the neighboring Republic, as part of an agreement between their two nations.
Castiel knows he has to obey, but that doesn't mean he won't rebel in what small ways he can. Unexpectedly, his actions end up having far-reaching consequences.
đ all things shining by askance and standbyme, 142k, au. sam and dean and cas go on a hunt that's not really a hunt, and against all odds good things happen. it's beautifully written and has scenes that literally make my heart leap out of my chest with joy and awe it's just WONDERFUL it's a wonderful fic. incredible mythology too omg i found that the authors actually created the myth the entire story is based on - like they donât pull a random one from history, they made one up THEMSELVES. they even self-published it on amazon if ur curious
Something in the world is waking up.
It isnât long before itâs brought to the attention of the Winchesters and Castiel: miracles are spreading across the country, the paranormal seems to be shrinking back on itselfâand it all has something to do with the missing prayer book of a traveling preacher who died over a century ago.
Dean is convinced itâs all the lead-up to another Apocalypse; Sam and Castiel arenât so sure. Regardless, it sends them out on a less-than-typical road-trip, following the Mississippi and remnants of a very old story that seems increasingly to call to them. And along the way the trio learn much more about themselvesâand the consequences and origins of loveâthan theyâd ever have anticipated.
đ broadway musical by griftings, 12.4k, crack. romcom where cas is supposed to play matchmaker to dean and jo and well. you know. it actually made me cackle out loud when i read it again so you know it's still good. absolutely one of the funniest fics iâve read
This is the day that marked the Holy and Blessed Union of Dean Winchester and Jo Harvelle.
The merging of prominent bloodlines is always a grand occurrence, but breeding pedigree hunter families like Winchester and Harvelle is something to be rejoiced. It is also something to be meticulously planned, which thankfully the Host is very good at.
Or, the romantic comedy where Dean Winchester and Jo Harvelle are destined to get married, Castiel is given the task of playing matchmaker and fails terribly, the entire Heavenly Host becomes a sitcom audience, God warns against male pregnancy, and Jimmy Novak is incredibly unimpressed with angels in general.
the five people you meet in heaven by chevrolangels, 22k, ambiguously canonverse. dean dies and goes to heaven and meets five people from his life. NOT a post-finale fic but still horrifically sad. i remember sobbing hysterically when i first read this so
Heaven is white.
Well. Isnât that fucking stereotypical.
Dean isnât really sure how he got here. Or even why heâs here. And hell, for all the times the Winchesters have died, he thinks he ought to know the drill by now. But what he doesnât know is when most folks go, they find something different.
Thereâs a system God put in place. That when youâre gone (for good), there are a couple things you gotta do first. There are five people waiting for you.
They are the five people you meet in heaven.
any port in a storm by microcomets, 53k, post-s8. dean and cas go on a haunted cruise for a case. you know what happens next. also the art is by anobviousaside and it's gorgeous
The angels have fallen, leaving Castiel graceless and Dean with, well, more of other peopleâs problems. When a string of couples goes missing on the east coast, Dean and Cas decide to investigateâand find themselves trapped and hunted on a couplesâ counseling cruise. Although battling monsters at sea is dangerous enough, sorting through emotional baggage proves to be far more deadly. (And, in which Cas embarks to find his missing grace and Dean is put out. Not necessarily in that order.)
a turn of the earth by microcomets, 95k, pre-canon au. cas is on the run from the empty and crash lands in dean's life. at one point he punches john in the face. a fucking beautifully written character study of pre-canon dean, honestly.
Deanâs your typical half-orphaned, monster-killing 22-year-old until a trenchcoated stranger crashes into his back windshield one September night, claiming heâs an angel that knows him from the future and that heâs on the run.
Frigging fantastic.
(Or, in which Castiel gets stuck in Deanâs timeline preseries and Dean kind of hates itâuntil he doesnât.)
unfinished duet by microcomets, 5.8k, canonverse. sam observes dean and cas throughout the years. i remember this breaking my heart back in 2013!
Sam watches Dean and Cas over the years and notices a few things. (Or, Dean and Cas unscripted.)
đ ergative/absolutive by glassedplanets, 8k, college au. dean and cas are best friends who meet in an astronomy class. i'm never not thinking about this fic it's so sweet and the friends to lovers is so soft and believable
He really shouldnât be thinking thoughts like this about his best friend who literally just broke up with his girlfriend, but he knows heâll blame it on sleepiness in the morning. He always does.
a certain light by flightagain, 24k, au. cas works at the gas n sip. dean is a customer. this authorâs writing style is so lonely and heavy but itâs very lovely
Castiel works at the Gas-n-Sip. There are half-price nachos and flickering lights, there are office-workers and werewolves stopping by for snacks. Dean is a frequent customer, and his office might be haunted.
the one thing you canât lose by majorenglishesquire, 5k, ambiguously canonverse. dean can pull cas around and itâs adorable. character study-ish. very sweet.
You know what I like a lot? The thought that Dean can just tug Cas anywhere at any time and Cas, who can lift tons without effort, who can demolish things with the light of his grace, who has battled and gone to war, has defended and broken, will just let Dean do it.
brother lover by twentysomething, 4k, set during s4/s5. deanâs jealous of sam and casâ budding relationship. this fic is so tropey but it does it well and itâs funny as fuck
However- and it doesn't happen a lot- they have to invoke 'I saw her first.â
his fucking kids by 8sword, 3k, canonverse au. dean and cas raise claire and emma together. yes, claire novak. yes, emma of 7x13 spice girls fame. this was the first kidfic i read for spn i think. obvs written before jack or claire actually came back into the picture but it was the TEMPLATE of kidfic for me for ages
Jesus, the school should just have a parking spot labeled, âReserved for the Novak-Winchesters,â because Deanâs getting sick of having to cruise around the parking lot looking for a spot every time he gets a call from the principal about Emma.
đ what has eight tentacles and isnât allowed to eat pie? by annie d (scaramouche), 16k, post s8. dean gets turned into an octopus. another fic that was SO MUCH BETTER than i remembered i fucking love when that happens. it isnât even about dean being an OCTOPUS like NO. NOT EVEN. itâs ACTUALLY about the bunker and building a home and a community and a family and about PHYSICAL COMFORT and you can actually feel the world expanding at the end of this fic like a gusty sigh of relief itâs SO WONDERFUL. kevin is in this fic. ellie is too and i had to look her up but THIS is her!!!! danay garcia u were too hot to stay on this show but i love you and miss u
Dean watched an anime porn about this once, but real life turns out to be way less interesting.
Or, the one where Dean gets turned into an octopus.
đ a beginnerâs guide to communing with the dead by suspiciousflashlight, 77k, canonverse au. dean is a cop who summons a powerful entity to help him solve a cold case. oh my god i canât believe i didnât put this on here i love this one so much. the writing bowls me over itâs so confident in its worldbuilding like youâre IMMEDIATELY plunged into deanâs pov (FLAWLESSLY executed throughout the fic btw) and you just learn about the world as you go!! and itâs such a fascinating world!!! i love the magic i love the typical bureaucratic red tape procedures i love normalizing the supernatural. i ESPECIALLY love monsters as normal people in a society. at one point thereâs this exchange
âMonsters,â says Cas finally. âBeyond the Wall there are monsters.â âYou mean, like, vampires and djinn and stuff?â Cas shakes his head. âThose arenât monsters, those are just people.â
those lines have stayed with me for years. i think about them every time i rewatch an episode of spn.
Maybe it's the little girl whose disappearance turned into a murder, and whose murder turned into a cold case, and who has now apparently decided to move in with him. Maybe it's the unacceptable hole left in his life when his dumb best friend and partner in (the prevention of) crime decided to go and get himself killed. Maybe it's his brother, whose high-profile career and fantastic girlfriend and first-child-on-the-way are steadily leaving Dean in the dust. Pick one. Pick all of them. The why doesn't matter so much as the what, and the what is this: Dean is pretty sure he's going completely, certifiably insane. Sure, he hasn't started wearing all his clothes inside out, and he still showers on a regular basis (anyways, that's not crazy, just a little eccentric); but there's no getting around the fact that he just threw away his life, his career, and his reputation by dragging out his mom's old necromancy book and summoning a Class A Forbidden Entity to his attic. A cranky one, too. With horrendous bed-head.
deanâs list by almaasi, 3k, canonverse. dean makes a list. short and sweet. i read this so much in 2015 that it literally got engraved into my brain line by line and rereading it caused synapses to fire that havent felt anything in years
Dean writes out a list of men he would go gay for. Sam has a suggestion to make.
đ the path of fireflies by museaway, 63.7k, post-s8. dean and cas open a charming bed and breakfast in vermont. no, literally. another CLASSIC. i think about the food in this fic all the time...........maple bacon baked french toast......the cinnamon rolls.....it literally sounds so good
After his humanity is restored, Dean wakes up in bed with Castiel, a wedding ring, and no memory of the past twelve years.
long nights in cold months by pyrebi, 2.3k, au. deanâs an insomniac and cas works at walmart. i forgot i had this fic ALSO basically memorized. holy shit. pineapple in the fruit aisle.....................anyway itâs short and sweet and the âplotâ resolves in such a satisfying way
When you're an insomniac, you get used to the "what the hell are you doing up, man?" look. Dean just hopes the guy who's stocking the shelves will stop giving it to him long enough to help him find some damn pineapple.
incredibly single & ready to mingle by imogenbynight, 3.6k, au. dean and cas meet on facebook. short cute au!!!!!!
Sam uses Facebook like the social media junkie he is. He's befriended literally every person he's ever had a conversation with since he got an account, which means that approximatelyâDean checksâeight hours ago, he shared this horrible photo with something in the vicinity of nine hundred people. The caption below the picture reads âincredibly single & ready to mingle ;)â and roughly half of them have liked it.
Dean has never been so embarrassed in his life.
đ unknown quantities by xylodemon, 8.5k, post-s8. after a post-case tryst, dean has to figure out his and casâ relationship. human cas fics hold a special place in my heart. funny AND good dean pov AND a misunderstanding that i actually think works!!!!!
No one ever tells Dean anything.

âThese are all my dirty secrets?â You look in trepidation at the folder on the table in front of you.
 Itâs thicker than anticipated.Â
âEveryone one of them.â Charlie is a perky, energetic redhead thatâs the exact opposite of what you expected. Samâs talked about her like sheâs Sherlock Holmes, and to be honest you assumed she was a man. âOr least what I could dig up. I can confidently say that if I couldnât find it, no one else will either.âÂ
Glancing at Sam you open the cover and scan over the top page. Itâs a basic list of your personal details, where youâve lived, who youâve dated.Â
âIs there anything we should be concerned about?â Sam asks. He slides his arm over the back of the couch behind you.Â
Charlie hesitates, looking at Sam and then speaks to you.Â
âAre you comfortable doing this with him here? I mean, it can get real weird real quick for both of you.âÂ
âI can leave if you want,â Sam offers.Â
âNo.â You swallow the urge to take him up on the offer. âNo secrets, right? This is my life.â
âOkay.â Charlie opens her laptop. âThere was a polaroid of you in your underwear at a party in your senior year of high school. But we had it taken off Facebook and I was able to purchase the original.â
âIt was on Facebook?â Youâre both horrified and impressed. You had no idea âHow did you even find it?â
âItâs what I do,â she chirps, already moving on. âYouâre pretty boring compared to the people I usually investigate. No DUIs or cheating. But you did date a man named Jasper.â
âOh Jesus.â You want to crawl under the table. Your time with Jasper wasnât as much a traditional relationship as a hook-up that lasted a year. He never came close to what you and Sam enjoy together, it was all about sex. âIâm sorry.â You turn to Sam whoâs throwing you a terrifying, forced smile.Â
âDonât be sorry,â he murmurs, a hand slipping over your thigh and wedging between your legs.Â
âDid you make a sex tape with him?â Charlie asks and you choke on your own spit.Â
âNo, I mean, I donât think we everâŠâ
âIs there a chance he recorded you without your knowledge?â
âMaybe.â You search your memory. Everything from that time is hazy, the two of you drank a lot. âI mean, I donât know. You think he recorded me?â
âI think he has something.â Charlieâs attention switches to Sam and she morphs into all-business mode. âHe was interested in why I was asking questions. When I made an initial offer for any videos or pictures he might have he acted like he had something. But I think he realized it was valuable and kicked me out of his apartment.â
âYou offered the maximum?â Sam asks.Â
âYeah, he didnât go for it.â
âDouble it and see what he does.â
âGot it.â She stops to make a note.
âHe has a sex tape with me in it?â Youâre not past this yet. You look to Sam whoâs unreadable. âI had no idea. I mean I eventually realized he was a creep but I never thought he would do something like that. What if he posts it?â
âDonât worry,â he nods, sliding a hand over your knee. âIâll handle it.â
âOther than Jasper, you and Sam are actually the biggest potential issue. I read Coleâs report. Itâs concerning despite your prior relationship. If the wrong person got a copy of his written complaint it would be damaging. I think you can expect the real story to revolve around the fact that Sam intervened when a mad man was shooting up the office. You can choose how you want to spin that. If you decide you want some heroic meet-cute to be the official story then I can erase any trace of your relationship before the shooting happened. If you want me to leave some crumbs confirming you were together prior, I can do that to. And if you want a lid on the whole thing, no problem.â
âPeople will care?â you ask.Â
âOh, for sure.â She chuckles, looking at you like youâre a moron. âSamâs personal life has been a lockbox. Youâre the most interesting thing thatâs ever happened to him.â
âWonderful.â This would all be so much easier if he wasnât so well off. If he hadnât been quite as successful all these precautions could be avoided.Â
âJust tell me what kind of story you want out there and Iâll start planting the seeds.â She grins at Sam with a warm familiarity. Few people interact with him this easily. There must be quite a back story.Â
âWeâll talk about it,â Sam answers for you, shifting in his seat. âAnything else?â
âThatâs all for her.â
âYou have my background as well?â
âI do.â She pulls a thinner file from her bag and you look at him in surprise.Â
âShe did one on you too?â
âCharlie has been the keeper of my secrets for a decade. She makes sure any possible indiscretions stayed buried,â Sam explains.Â
Charlie is looking between you and Sam, asking a silent question.Â
âYou can say whatever you need to in front of her.â Sam turns to you. âYou can leave if you feel uncomfortable.âÂ
You find yourself suddenly nervous. Samâs past is largely a mystery and youâre not sure if you want to know. Were there others before you?Â
âThe woman you had a financial arrangement with is not a problem. Itâs Madison Iâm concerned about.â
Financial arrangement? That piques your interest but the conversation moves on.Â
âItâs been years. You donât think sheâs gotten past it?â Sam shifts beside you, betraying his discomfort for the entire situation. Heâs rarely visibly distressed but thereâs no covering this up. His reaction may be subtle but itâs there.Â
âShe still Googles you once a week.â Charlie turns her computer toward Sam. You donât understand youâre looking at, but he seems to. Sam takes interest in something on the screen and you feel him stiffen beside you. âSheâs living in Boston again?â
âShe moved back last year,â Charlie confirms.Â
âYou didnât tell me.â Samâs tone shifts to his trademark disapproval but it doesnât seem to phase the perky redhead.
âI update when I think thereâs a concern. This wasnât a red flag for me. Sheâs from Boston. Her father is sick. She got a good job at a tech firm. It looks to me like she came home to be near her family...or...â
âOr?â Sam asks.Â
âOr she came back to be close to you. Itâs hard to tell with her. Madison has always been a wild card. You know how to pick âem.â Her eyes dart to you, offering an apologetic grin. âPresent company excluded.â Â
You just sit there taking in these new tidbits of information. A trail of breadcrumbs that lead to the story that was Samâs life before you.Â
âDo you think she would try to hurt Sam?â you ask and two pairs of eyes look at each other before turning to you. âOr me?â
âSheâs not that kind of crazy,â Charlie assures you. âBut she would love to embarrass Sam. Make things hard for him. Sheâs still pissed he cut her off.âÂ
âI see.â You sit back as they continue talking details. Youâll have questions for him later but right now your mind is swirling. Your ex hook-up has a possible homemade sex tape of you doing God knows what, and Sam apparently hired a hooker.
âAnd what about Dean and my father?â Sam squeezes your knee, bringing you to attention.Â
âWhat about them?â You lean forward with interest.Â
âTheyâre hard to track.â Charlie closes her computer and sits back. Thereâs no documentation of this inquiry. Nothing to tie either of them to the wanted Winchesters.Â
âThat canât surprise you.â Sam nods. âBut youâre good.â
âYes, I am.â She offers a little bow of her head. âI had to track the weird to find them.â
âWhat do you mean?â you ask.Â
âThey like the crazy stuff, ghosts, and monsters. So I kept an eye out for any weird happenings. Some lady in New Jersey claimed a sewer monster stole her baby. And youâll never guess who popped up in town at some shitty motel the next day.â
Taking out her phone she pulls up a photo and holds it out for you and Sam to see. Itâs a grainy security camera shot of Dean with a baseball cap pulled over his face.Â
âWhen was this?â Sam inquires.Â
âSix weeks ago. Your brother is staying along the eastern seaboard. Investigating paranormal bullshit in Vermont, Maine, Connecticut. Occasionally heâll pop up in the midwest, but for the most part, heâs staying close.âÂ
âTo me.â Samâs not asking, he already knows.Â
âYeah, that would be my guess. I did a sweep of your office buildings, homes and so on. I found a digital hole in your home security cameras. Someone created a backdoor into the system so they could have unfettered access.â
âHeâs watching us?â Deanâs been on your mind ever since the encounter in the kitchen over a year ago. But now it seems your concerns were in fact warranted.Â
âMaybe,â she continues. âItâs hard to tell with him. He might be watching. Maybe heâs visiting, editing the footage to cover his tracks. Or maybe itâs not Dean at all.â
âWho else would it be?â you ask, afraid of the answer. âFBI?â
âMy father,â Sam sighs.Â
âItâs a possibility.â Charlie shrugs. âUnfortunately itâs impossible to tell what theyâre up to.â
âWhatâs your gut instinct?â Sam asks Charlie.Â
âI think theyâre keeping an eye on you...and her.â She looks you dead on. âIf you want to know why your guess is as good as mine. They believe some insane stuff, Sam. End of the world, apocalypse wack-a-doo shit. They could just be trying to keep you safe. But thereâs always the possibility of something else. Y/N was right to be concerned.â
âPerfect,â Sam laughs dryly, rolling his eyes. âThis is the last thing I need right now.â
âI liaised with your new security guy. He knows whatâs going on with your family, Madison, the whole shebang. Heâs working on Y/Nâs apartment and your house to seal the leaks. Iâll schedule a meeting for the three of us when you get back to Boston.â
âSounds good.â Sam stands as Charlie collects her things and you stay seated. âThank you for everything. As always, youâre invaluable.âÂ
âThatâs why you pay me the big bucks.â She laughs. âNice to meet you, Y/N.â
âYou too.â You wave her off, watching as Sam locks the door after her departure. He shoves a hand in his pocket, the two of you staring at each other in silence.Â
âWhat are you thinking?â he asks.
âOh, more than you wanna know.â Running a hand down your face you categorize the evening. Sex scandals, stalkers, fugitives from justice...where to start. âYou paid for sex?â
âTechnically, no.â Sam walks over to sit on the couch across the coffee table.Â
âWhat does that mean?â
âIt means I never fucked her.â
âOkay, but you hired a hooker?â
âYes.â
âAnd didnât have sex with her?â
âNo.â His jaws ticks. He doesnât want to answer these questions. âShe sucked my dick. She allowed me to do things to her, but I never fucked her. Would you like the details?â
âJesus,â you sigh. âNo. God...fuck. And the other woman, Madison, she was your girlfriend?âÂ
âNo. She and I had an arrangement. The same as you and I had when this started. She worked for W & S. It only lasted a few months. She became attached, somewhat obsessive. She believed we were more than our arrangement and I put an end to it.â He stares at you, still as a statue.Â
âOkay.â You hate the very idea of him with someone else. The thought of another woman makes you angry, but heâs being honest, and honesty is everything so you swallow the urge to take it out on him. âWhat are we going to do about your family?â
âIâll give you the details as soon as I have them,â he offers. âWeâll have increased security.â
âGood.â Racking your brain you try to make sure youâve covered everything. âOh! Jasper, are you sure Charlie will be able to get that video...if there is one, I mean.âÂ
âShe has her ways and I have money. Everyone has a price. We just need to find his.â
Youâre both quiet again. Things feel unsettled, awkward for the first time in a long time. And you only know one way to reset this feeling. There are times when having Sam in complete control makes you feel the safest.Â
âSam,â you start, watching him sigh in response. Heâs expecting more questions.Â
âYes?â he asks, looking at you expectantly.Â
âIâd like you to spank me now.â This request makes your cheeks hot with anticipation. His face morphs from controlled irritation to pure lust, eyes narrow, a grin pulling at his mouth. âWith your belt.â
âTake off your clothes and lay across my lap,â he instructs, already working at his buckle. âGet the gag. We canât have you making too much noise.âÂ

Walk Me Home - Ch 5
Summary: Twenty-four years ago, Kimberly Harper met a boy who changed the course of her entire life before up and leaving one night. She spent years moving past the memories, building a stable, satisfying career as professor of folklore and mythology at the local university. Then the accidents start, and sheâs forced to seek help among her hunter contacts. All it takes is a knock on her office door to send Kimberâs carefully built emotional walls crumbling to the ground.
Featuring: Teen Winchesters, high school romance, reunions, misunderstandings, high intensity emotional turmoil, Deanâs love of pie, Dean being adorable, Sam being adorable and maybe a bit nosy eventually, much group adorkable-ness, show-style investigation, mention of our favorite werewolf, gratuitous and obvious love of fall, DID I MENTION ROMANCE, fluff, smut, tension.Â
Warnings: Show level violence, show level parental neglect (letâs not John bash, Iâm just saying), show-style witchcraft, show-level mental manipulation, stalking, bit of angst, sexual content (higher than show level),swearing, general yearning
Word Count: 3777
Authorâs Note: Eternal thanks to @mskathywriteswordsâ , @fangirlxwritesx67â, and @cracksinthewallsâ for editing, revision, flailing, and generally knocking sense into me when Iâm being stubborn. Decided to give Wednesday posting a try and also get a chapter up a little earlier to make up for lack of posting. Be prepared to brush your teeth after this one. The fluff morphed into cotton candy when I wasnât looking. Also, be prepared, the next chapter is short, but...intense? Yes. Letâs say intense.Â
Keep in Mind: There are a lot of flashbacks. I tried to write current events in present tense and flashbacks in past tense. Hereâs hoping I got everything right!
Please read/heed the warnings. 18+ ONLY.Â

Chapter 5
Kimber drifts gradually back to consciousness, feeling warmer and safer than she has in decades. She draws in a deep breath, stretching luxuriously, and then stilling suddenly. This bed is not her bed. This blanket is not her blanket. She has a brief moment of panic before she opens her eyes to find Deanâs face inches from hers, smooth and relaxed with sleep.
Sheâd only been able to let him go last night long enough for him to grab his own quick shower and change into sleep clothes. Then, in wordless agreement, theyâd settled under the covers of her bed. Theyâd woven limbs together, pressed close without a word of discussion or thought of awkwardness.Â
Just as she was falling asleep, she felt his cheek press against the top of her head, and heâd murmured a single question. She nodded her consent, and his lips met her forehead, just as soft and warm as she remembered. Then sleep asserted its claim.
Kimber lies still in Deanâs arms now, afraid to move and wake him. Sheâs never seen him this peaceful and relaxed, even back before life took more of a toll on him. With his guard down, she can finally see all the fine lines etched by a hard life spread over his features, adding depth and detail to his face.Â
In the early morning light filtering through the threadbare curtains, she can just make out a sparse sprinkling of gray in his hair, and she smiles. Time may be catching up with Dean Winchester, but he is definitely not worse for wear.Â
She shifts a little, freeing a hand, and he grumbles in his sleep, his arms tightening for a second before relaxing again. She strokes his hair back gently, combing her nails lightly across his scalp, and he shivers against her.Â
Sheâs never seen him this vulnerable, this soft, even when they were younger. She has to strangle down the urge to trace his facial features with her fingertips. Whatever this is between them is strained by absence and misunderstanding but has somehow managed to survive the years. Touching him so intimately without his knowledge or consentâŠ
No, she thinks. I want to ask him, I want him to hear him say yes. I want him to ask me to touch him.
Instead, she snuggles closer, closing her eyes and resting her face on his chest again, basking in the safety and warmth of his embrace for as long as she can. She is mortified when, five minutes later, her stomach lets out a growl so loud that it actually rouses Dean from his sleep. His arms tense as he stretches and frowns, eyebrows lowering with concern.
âYou hungry or just really happy to see me?â he rumbles, his eyes closing again. She giggles, embarrassment abated. Then she becomes acutely aware of the ratâs nest that is her hair and what tastes like a truly horrific case of morning breath. She disentagles herself from his legs and rolls from his grasp, smiling to herself at his muttered protests. Snatching her previous dayâs clothes, Kimber slips into the bathroom to perform whatever damage control she can manage under the circumstances.Â
Thirty minutes later finds them at the diner across the parking lot, downing coffee with mutual, silent appreciation. Deanâs brother Sam is expected imminently, and Kimber has no classes or office hours today, so they are mostly ready to begin the investigation.
âWe need to sweep your office and house for hex bags,â Dean says, between sips of his second cup of coffee. âYour house will take a while, so why donât we start with your office to get it out of the way?â
âSounds like a plan,â Kimber agrees, frowning. âIâll know if anything is missing, out of place, or new. Maybe you and Sam could check out the spots of the other accidents?â
Dean opens his mouth to answer, then his eyes focus on something over her shoulder, and he nods a greeting. She turns to see a ridiculously tall man in a suit headed in their direction. It takes her longer than sheâs proud to admit to reconcile this giant stranger with the slumped, defeated boy she last saw in the backseat of the Winchesterâs car.
âSam?â
His smile is warm, if a little hesitant, and she stands. They fumble between a hug and a handshake, finally settling on the former before seating themselves. A waitress drops off another mug for Sam, along with coffee refills all around, and they waste no time filling Sam in on the little they know and what they have planned.
âActually, Sam,â Dean adds, glancing askance at the egg white omelette the waitress places in front of his brother, âI was thinking you could interview the victims at the hospital, see if they noticed anyone out of the ordinary or had contact with anyone that sounds like our stalker.âÂ
Sam nods, his mouth full, and turns questioning eyes on Kimber. She closes her eyes, pushing as much distraction from her mind as possible.
âHe was...on the shorter side. Iâd say I probably have an inch or so on him. Younger than me, but I donât know by how much. Iâm really bad at judging age, Iâm sorry. Unshaven but not a full beard, kind of rough-looking. Really pale. He never looked me in the eyes, so I didnât see his eye color. Dark, shaggy hair.â
She shrugs, spreading her hands in apology. âI donât remember much else. Dark blue windbreaker? Itâs been a few weeks, and I didnât think Iâd have to point him out in a line-up or anything.â
Sam shakes his head quickly, swallowing. âNo, Kimber, itâs fine. Thatâs more to go on than we usually have. Iâll talk to the victims, see if anyone stands out in their minds. You two have a solid plan. Iâll give you a call after I visit the hospital, see what I can find out.â
He hesitates, his eyebrows knitted together. âKimber, I know youâre under a lot of strain, but could you go over the incidents one more time so I have the basics before I go talk to them? I wouldnât ask, but I need to know what to expect.â
She canât repress the shudder than runs through her stomach, but she shakes it off and rolls her shoulders. This is just an information exchange. She can handle that. She may need a drink or two afterwards, but she can get through it one more time.
Sam listens attentively, his forehead wrinkled, mouth set in a thin-lipped frown as she recounts the series of accidents plaguing her department. He exchanges some sort of troubled, wordless communication with Dean before glancing down at his folded hands. After considering for a long moment, he speaks, his words measured and careful.
âIt definitely sounds like someone has a grudge against your department, at least, if not you specifically. All the victims are friends or work closely with you. We donât know if any of the other victims got a doll like yours. Thatâs something for my list. You sure you canât think of any reason, anything at all, that might make someone target all of you?â
She shoves down her mounting frustration, feeling impotent and slow. If she could think of anything at all helpful, she would have shared it by now.Â
âI really canât, Iâm sorry. I just donât interact with that many people outside of the department, and we all get along fine, as far as I know. No special treatment, no recent honors anyone could be jealous of. I checked in with my hunter contacts that Iâd helped out with witch cases in the last few years, even a few non-witch cases that were still open, and I got nowhere with that. I donât know what else to tell you.â
Sam sighs, nodding before finishing the last of his coffee. âFigured it was worth asking. Okay, Iâm heading out. Dean, Iâll give you a call in a few hours.â
Dean nods to Sam, and the younger Winchester excuses himself, crossing the crowded restaurant with a few long strides before disappearing out the door.
Kimber turns back to Dean, her eyes wide with shock sheâs barely managed to suppress until just now. He frowns, taking in her expression, looks down to inspect his shirt, then back up, his face comically confused.
âWhat? Do I have food on my face?â
âWhat did you feed him after you left town?!â Kimber keeps her volume low but canât keep the wonder from her voice. âGrowth hormones? Steroids? Jesus, heâs over a foot taller than the last time I saw you both, and he was already thirteen then!â
Dean barks out a loud, sharp laugh that earns him a reproving glance from a passing waitress. He bites his lip, covering his mouth with his hand, only partially successful at smothering his snort. She canât help but smile, a little embarrassed at her outburst, but stillâŠ
âNo, just lots of fast food. Good, healthy, all-American diet. Almost had to get a full-time job, just keepinâ him fed and clothed. Kid grew out of shoes and jeans like nothinâ Iâve ever seen.â
Thereâs no mistaking the fondness in Deanâs voice, almost more paternal than brotherly. And the off-hand comment about keeping Sam clothed and fed...Kimberâs heart twinges, but she carefully keeps her face as relaxed and amused as she can.
âReady to go?â she asks. He nods and stands, lifting the check from the table to take up to the register. He offers her a hand, an inviting smile curling one corner of his mouth, and she does her best to smother the butterflies in her stomach as her fingers slide into his.
âŠ
âI promised Sam Iâd go to opening night,â Dean said, something like an apology in his voice. âHeâs only working tech, but heâs really excited. Itâs been a while since weâve stayed anywhere long enough that he could get involved like this.â
Kimber squeezed his fingers, pulling her coat closed with her other hand. The temperature had dropped over the last few days, and the evening was brisk as they walked hand-in-hand to the high school.
âDean, are you kidding? Youâre taking me to a play, dinner, and meeting your family all at once. Three birds with one date!â She skipped a little, swinging his hand with hers, flashing him her most exaggerated grin as she let her eyes go wide and kooky. He snorted, glancing away to hide his smile.
He stopped suddenly, tugging gently until she stepped closer, her expression relaxing. His knuckles slid gently down her cheekbone and under her jaw, lifting her chin. He kissed her, a sweet, chaste brush of his lips over hers that sent her pulse dancing. Her cheeks warmed under his attention, and he pressed his lips a fraction more firmly against hers before straightening.
His eyes sparkled in the light from the streetlamp overhead. âYouâre ridiculous, you know that?âÂ
She popped up on her tiptoes to kiss him again, marveling at her own bravery as her hands clasped the sides of his face, locking him in place. Before he could recover, she grabbed his hand, tugging him into a run down the sidewalk, and they arrived at the school, breathless and laughing.Â
The performance of Oklahoma! was pretty standard for high school. Simple dance sequences, fair to decent singing (for the most part), and about forty minutes longer than Kimber preferred. They waited afterwards for Sam to make his way from the lighting board, and he shyly offered his hand to Kimber, who accepted, smiling and squeezing his fingers just a little.
The three of them arrived at the diner, relieved to see most families were celebrating at the more expensive restaurants across town. Sam looked over the menu, his eyes as hungry as the growl that escaped his stomach. Kimber didnât miss the sad look he shot Dean before closing the menu and setting it down.Â
When he ordered an ice water and peanut butter sandwich, Kimberâs heart cracked.Â
âSam, itâs my treat tonight. You did a great job; Mrs. Hasker never lets eighth graders work the soundboard, so go nuts. Order whatever you want. Itâs your night.âÂ
Sam, eyes wide with hope, glanced at Dean, who looked torn between shame and relief. Dean cleared his throat, shot a grateful smile at Kimber, then nodded at Sam.Â
âYou did good, kid. Go for it.â
Samâs face brightened, and Kimber couldnât help but mirror his expression as he ordered a strawberry milkshake, double cheeseburger, and cheese fries. Kimber discreetly jabbed Dean in his ribs, and he side-glared at her, suppressing what was very definitely not a manly squeak of surprise.Â
âYou, too, big brother,â she said, her eyes narrowing pointedly. His lips thinned, his expression pinched. She knew she was hitting a nerve for him; it was fine to accept dinner invitations at home, and fine for her to treat his little brother, but paying for him on a date was an entirely different matter. He visibly wrestled with the simple decision, frustration and pride warring with want.
She softened her expression, placing her hand over his clenched fist. âPlease?â She mouthed. âItâs okay.â He glanced at Sam, who was happily chatting with the smiling waitress about the performance, and a reluctant smile tugged at the corners of Deanâs face.Â
âDouble-bacon cheeseburger, and chili fries, please.â
Dinner with the Winchester boys was a delight that Kimber never forgot. Though Dean teased his younger brother mercilessly, liberally sprinkling descriptors like âgeekâ and ânerdâ in his comments, she saw the way his eyes would linger on Sam as the younger boy inhaled his meal between answering questions about his classes and the performance.
âAre you going to take AP classes, Sam?â Kimber asked. He seemed so keen and motivated, she couldnât imagine he wouldnât want to.
âI want to, but we move so much, I donât think I could keep up with the curriculum,â he admitted, his expression falling.Â
âCan I tell you a secret?â Kimber lowered her voice conspiratorially. Sam leaned a little closer, intrigued, and she smiled at his eagerness. It was like looking at a mirror of herself just a few years ago.
âMost AP classes follow the same guidelines across the country, almost week by week. Mr. Schaeffer is the AP coordinator at our school, and heâs pretty cool for a teacher. If you talk to him, explain your situation, Iâll bet he could get you copies of most of the AP curriculum, maybe even some spare textbooks, so you could keep up with it as you guys move around.â
Samâs eyes widened, and he glanced at Dean for confirmation. Dean shrugged, affecting disinterest as he leaned back to drape an arm around Kimberâs shoulder.Â
âI dunno, Sammy,â Dean drawled, âbut Kimberâs the top of our class, so sheâs probably got some idea what sheâs talking about.â He let out an exaggerated huff of air as Kimberâs elbow connected with his side, doubling over as he pretended to fall out of the booth.Â
Sam peppered Kimber and Dean with questions about their classes for the rest of the night and didnât even have to be convinced to have an extra large slice of celebratory pie to finish the meal off.
The three of them stayed late enough at the diner that Kimber was obliged to call her parents on the pay phone in the corner to assure them that she had not, in fact, been kidnapped and left in a ditch on the side of the road. The temperature had dropped considerably, so when Kimberâs mother offered to give all three of them a ride home, Kimber accepted without thinking.
âMy mom will be here in about ten minutes,â she announced as she slid back into the booth. âSheâs going to give you two a lift back to the motel on our way home.â
Deanâs expression fell sharply, and Kimberâs heart sank.Â
âYou didnât-â
âThanks!â Sam said, unintentionally speaking over Dean. âIt got so cold out all of a sudden. Say, do you think I should talk to Mr. Schaeffer tomorrow?â
âThe sooner the better,â she said, shrugging on her coat. Sam nodded, slurping down the last of his drink and loping off to the bathroom. She glanced over at Dean, who was sitting stone-faced, a muscle twinging above his jaw.
âI didnât mean to...I mean, I should have asked, Dean. Iâm sorry.â
Deanâs eyes closed, his jaw clenching as his lips pinched tight. Kimber waited, feeling the sting of tears prick at the back of her eyes. Sheâd crossed some unspoken line between them, and she didnât know what to do to fix the moment. It had been such a good night, up til then.
âI...Iâm not mad...at you,â Dean finally ground out. âJust...just gimme a second.â
He scrubbed his face with both hands, then glanced back towards the bathroom before speaking. He kept his eyes on the table-top, his hands clenching and unclenching on the cheap formica.
âIâm not...used to accepting hand-outs. I can take care of Sam, Kimber, I donât need...you didnât...you didnât have to.â
She opened her mouth, fully ready to defend herself, but he held up a hand.Â
âI know. I know what youâre going to say. I get that itâs not a hand-out. I know you donât...I know you arenât lookinâ down at us. Iâm not used toâŠâ
He cleared his throat, then reached out to her, his eyes still firmly on the table-top. When he spoke, his voice was low and thick, his words measured.Â
âI promise, Iâm not mad at you. Can we leave it at that for now?â He turned pleading eyes in her direction, his hand palm-up on the table. Her fingers were in his before she realized sheâd moved. Mouth too dry to speak, she nodded and allowed herself to be pulled up from the booth.
Sam came barreling back from the restroom then, saving them from further awkward conversation, and they bundled up against the chill. By the time Kimberâs mother arrived, Dean had relaxed enough to greet Mrs. Harper pleasantly, and when they reached the motel, he leaned up to kiss Kimberâs cheek before climbing out of the backseat with Sam in tow.
The next day at school, Dean was a little distracted, almost distant. He walked her home that afternoon in almost complete silence. They were a block from her house when she couldnât take the tension anymore. She stopped short, biting her lip as tears stung her eyes. To her shame, her throat started to clench, choking any attempt at words.Â
Dean looked back at her, concern and confusion clear on his face at her sudden stop.Â
She swiped the heel of her hand across her cheeks, avoiding his gaze. âIâm sorry about last night,â she managed, less coherently than she would have liked. âI didnât mean to...I didnât...Iâm sorry I ruined the evening.â
Dean was in front of her in an instant, thumbs wiping the tears from her face, lips pressed fiercely against her forehead.Â
âNo, sweetheart.â His tone was rough and resolute. âI told you Iâm not mad at you. Last night was...Last night was wonderful. I haven't seen Sam that happy in a long time. Itâs been a rough few months. Sam and Dad have started fighting. Dad expects a lot from him, but not the usual good grades kind of âa lot.â And when Dad pushes, Sam pushes back, and IâŠâ
He dropped his forehead to hers, and Kimber pulled in a shaking breath.
âI didnât want to drag you into our mess. You are perfect, and Sam and I both had a great time last night. Thank you. For dinner. For making Sam so happy. For everything.â He pulled back a few inches, catching her gaze. âPlease donât apologize again.â
She nodded, unable to answer aloud. He searched her eyes until he was satisfied, then nodded.
â âM gonna kiss you now, so Imma need you to hold back on the tears for a minute. People will think Iâm a terrible kisser if you cry through the whole thing.â
She laughed, and he caught her off guard, pressing his lips to hers before deepening the kiss. His fingers slid into her hair, tilting her head until he found an angle to please them both. His tongue swept, feather-light, across her lower lip, and she melted.
They came back to Earth a few moments later, jolted from their universe by enthusiastic honking and shouting from a passing car full of guys from one of their classes. Kimber hid her blazing face against Deanâs neck as he nodded, grinning and waving at the other boys.
Instead of pulling away, Kimber linked her arms around his neck, shivering against a biting breeze that swept past. Deanâs arms constricted, pulling her close enough that she felt his heartbeat against her chest.
âYou have nothing to apologize for,â Dean whispered, his words nearly lost in the breeze. Then he pulled away, linked his fingers through hers, and walked her home. He kissed her once more on her doorstep, holding her face between his warm, calloused palms, eyes closed.Â
He rested his forehead against hers briefly before stepping back. He tried to deliver that smooth, carefree grin from their first study session and failed miserably.
âIâll see you tonight,â he said. Then he turned, flipping up the collar of his jacket, and stuffed his hands into his pockets as he headed down the walkway. She watched him go, wanting nothing more than to run after him. The set of his shoulders, the tense bend of his neck, told her to hold her ground, though.Â
Something else was eating at Dean, and she knew him well enough to know that needling him wouldnât get him to open up. He needed space and understanding, and she would just have to sit on her frustration. He asked for so very little, the least she could do was give him some time to work through whatever was going on. She just hoped it wouldnât take too much time for him to open up. She hated seeing him so distant and miserable.Â
When Dean finally turned up that evening, he was thirty minutes late for dinner. His father glowered at the pair of them from the driverâs seat of a sleek, black muscle car, while Sam slumped, miserable, in the back. Kimber realized with cold, painful clarity that they had, in fact, no time left at all.

Okay, so, SuperWolf. I have actually read a couple fics that had crossovers, one where the Winchesters were related to Claudia, and one where they werenât related to anyone specific. One of those was unfinished, and Iâm not 100% the author of the other knew anything about SPN outside reading a character list.
My thoughts kinda merged some of the posts I saw you share. I mean, if anybody in the Beacon Hills contingent is gonna catch a classic (dad) rock reference, itâd be Noah, lbr. So the boys roll in throwing out their fake FBI band names, and he just immediately thinks âoh Jesus f'ing Christ, what now?â, and while talking to them uses his computer to send Jordan a text asking him to sneak a picture of them and send it to Chris asking if â[he] recognizes these dumbassesâ.
While waiting for an answer, I feel like he could either go the route of âThatâs interesting, Agent McCall didnât mention anyone else coming out to helpâ, because he may not like Rafe, but he can be useful at times, OR âThatâs interesting, Agent [insert name of another member of the same band as they used here] didnât mention anyone else coming out to helpâ, just to see how they react.
While theyâre trying to deflect and press the issue, Stiles drops in to visit and they donât realize heâs Noahâs son when they mention questioning him. Right about then he gets a text from Chris that theyâre his nephews, and heâs on his way. To keep them there, and also for both their amusements, he takes them into one of the interrogation rooms to talk to Stiles. It goes about as well as it did for Rafael.
When Chris finally gets there, Sam and Dean are shocked to learn that heâs living there and has been dealing with the assorted issues. Not quite as shocked as they are when he greets Noah with a kiss, but still pretty shocked. (Whether Peter is also a part of this and if that particular bombshell gets dropped on them is up to you. ;D )
I think I had other thoughts, but Iâm running out of time for lunch, so. Also, on the top/bottom thing Iâve seen in a couple of posts, as someone whoâs always been pretty firmly on the versatile side for any ship Iâve ever had, Iâve never really understood the people that start getting creepy and insistent that certain characters can only be a certain thing for x reason. I prefer when authors mix it up, and the weird woobifying thing some people do with bottoms and/or subs just seems creepy a lot of the time. Like if itâs in fun, thatâs one thing, but some people get oddly serious about it. I feel like Iâm probably wording that weird, sorry if it comes across that way.
Anyway I have to clock back in, but again, ALL THE HUGS, and LOTS OF KITTY CUDDLES. I hope things calm down for you and I hope you start to feel better when they do. Take care! (I mean it!) *SO MANY HUGS TO BOTH OF YOU!*
I havenât read a single fic for this but now I kinda want to. Especially if it has this plot but I have a feeling most of them will be about Stiles Winchester.
But YES
Omg the looks on Sam and Deans faces when their cousin walks in and kisses the sheriff. Â
Sam: âHe just kissed the sheriff...â
Dean: ... âBut he didnât kiss the deputy.â
Parrish: *uncomfortable looks as he quickly puts the paperwork down in front of Sheriff Stilinski and bails*
Upon learning that their cousin has it all under control, or so he says. Dean doesnât believe it, the Winchester brothers concede their active hunt but still stick around. And then they learn that not only is their cousin dating the sheriff with the annoyingly frustrating kid named Stiles, he is also dating Peter Hale. One of the known werewolves of the town. Dean does not approve and barges in on family night.
âWhat the hell do you think youâre doing? Playing hanky-panky with the sheriff and the werewolf? Really?â
Chris, very calmly drinking his beer while staring Dean straight in the eyes;Â âActually Iâm fucking them, passionately, at least a couple of times a week.â
Stiles:Â âOh my god...!â
Allison:Â âDad.... no.â
Jackson:Â âDid he really just call it the hanky-panky? Whereâs your class? Have a dollar and buy some.â
Malia to Peter:Â âDid he just straight up admitted to fucking you?â
Peter:Â âPassionately, multiple times a week. Heâs pretty damn good at it.â
Noah:Â âOh my god Peter... no...â
Peter:Â âThatâs not what you said last night.â
Isaac:Â âMan and I thought my family was fucked up.. is it too late to be unadopted?â
Sam: *Just stares on in shock*
-
And honestly I never really got the whole who bottoms for who discourse either. most of the characters I write are verses in my eyes and I really donât have strong preferences one way or another. I see Chris as more shy, Noah as mischievous, and Peter as the instigator but all three of them could top or bottom depending on their moods.

Yâa peu de fluff dans mes fics prĂ©fĂ©rĂ©es, love me some angsty life and death moments, mais ça finit toujours bien. Enfin. VĂ©rifie les tags quand mĂȘme :)))) Jâai mis les liens, si yâa pas câest quâelles ont Ă©tĂ© supprimĂ©es mais jâai les pdf donc hit me up.Et rĂ©vise tes partiels !!!!
CANON
A turn of the earth -https://archiveofourown.org/works/5138552/chapters/11825306
Probably my favorite fic set in Canon. Itâs set around season 11, and I love how we dive into Deanâs past pre-series and then as time goes by, we catch up with the show timelineâs. Itâs incredibly well written.
525,600 Minutes - https://archiveofourown.org/works/507228/chapters/892693
A man wakes up alone on the streets of Detroit. Lost and somehow forgotten, he's dressed in blood-soaked clothing without memories and without a name.
This is his journey to find it.
It was first published in 2012 set after s5, but it was rewritten last year. I still have the old version for nostalgiaâs sake but the new version is even better. Itâs got some amnesia so great for pining :))))
The inexhaustible silence of houses -https://archiveofourown.org/works/560268/chapters/1000755
Almost two years after the world doesn't end, Castiel falls from graceâand loses his voice in the process. It is the impetus for confession and change; before long, he is settling into a loving relationship with Dean, the Winchesters are tired, and hunting for a place to land has taken precedence to hunting anything else. Dean and Castiel fall in love with the strange little house on the end of Swallowtail Drive, and for a little while life is as it should beâsweet, affectionate, and beginning afresh.
But more and more Castiel sees and hears things in the house that beg the question of whether or not a place itself can be alive. The walls and rooms seem to shift and grow and breathe, and one night, Dean comes home from a hunt changed in a way that Castiel cannot explain. In the months that follow, their domestic bliss takes turns for the dark and sour, and the confusion of their circumstances will ultimately test everything Castiel knows about the man he loves, and everything he believes to be true.
Listen, I cried. I cried SO MUCH. There was a lil fandom war going on for a time between which was the hardest, this one or Twist and Shout, and both destroy me completely. But this one is set in canon and closer to the characters, to me, so Iâll always recommend this one first (unless you want a happy ending, in which case, donât read it)
Only if for a night - https://archiveofourown.org/works/826303
Castiel is captured by a djinn. Dean goes slightly crazy, and Cas discovers a thing or two about himself.
Iâm a sucker for Dean/Cas in Djinn verse and this one is by far my favorite.
The Bird That Feels The Light (not slash) https://archiveofourown.org/works/210860
AU from 5.18 (or thereabouts). Castiel awakens in the middle of a smoking crater, stranded and very much human. According to the people who have discovered him, itâs six months to the day after Michael and Lucifer faced off on the field of battle outside of Detroit, and Castiel isnât the only one to have returned. When, at his insistence, they take him to this other person, he finds a child âa little boyâ and realizes that, contrary to all his expectations, he has been reunited with Dean Winchester. The world has changed in their absence, and not for the better. Sam is gone, whether dead or simply missing is uncertain. Castiel is given the name of a man in Idaho who may have answers for him. He is faced with the task of travelling cross-country with Dean, who is dependent on him now in ways he never was before, in order to discover the truth. But along the way, as he and Dean learn to know and trust each other once more, Castiel begins to realize that the answers he thought he wanted might not be the ones he needs.
Itâs not slash at all since Dean is a kid but Iâve read it probably about 20 times and I still love it as the first time. Thereâs just something about human Castiel carrying a 4 year old Dean across the world and fighting monsters and demons and humans to survive that gets to me.
Hands, From Which All Things Are Built - https://archiveofourown.org/works/747324
Castiel travels with the angel tablet and without the Winchesters. One day, Dean gets a text from some anonymous number. (They speak in the language of need.) A post-08.17 Goodbye, Stranger story.
If you want pining, this one is definitely for you.
Last Man Standing -Â https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8363328/1/Last-Man-Standing
This one is set just after the season 7 finale, itâs a Purgatory fic with so.much.pining I always need to hold a pillow to my chest when I read it or I go insane sdfghjkl I havenât read it in probably 4 years but I remember absolutely loving it.
Outrun my gun - https://archiveofourown.org/works/281887/chapters/448388
"The two of you are so stubborn you've made Heaven blink." Finally convinced that Sam and Dean will never say yes and accept their destinies, Heaven and Hell come up with a new plan, one that will redraw the Apocalypse and make everything run much more smoothly. All they need is Dean Winchester's soul.
Donât mind the MCD tag, itâs got a happy ending. Also a classic set in canon, itâs from 2011 so quite oldish but itâs incredible how the characterization is on point. Love love love it.
AU
Tramps Like Us
Dean Winchester's life is falling apart. He's lost his job, his apartment, and his brother, all in one day. He seems to break everything he touches. Frustrated and alone, he drives off into the night with no idea where he's headed. But then he meets Castiel Novak, a quiet and reclusive man with a haunted past, and suddenly he finds himself with a very specific destination in mind.
I feel like everyone has read Tramps Like Us but just in case, Iâll put it on the list. Not sure what I can say that hasnât been said by half this website already but well⊠it deserves the hype.
Til The Last - https://archiveofourown.org/works/1001935/chapters/1984189
When the war came, Dean Winchester was determined that he was not going to get involved. He had more important things to worry about than some rich manâs fight. He had work on the farm and he had taking care of his family. Nothing else was worth his worry. But in August in the Year of Our Lord 1863, when the soldiers came knocking, they werenât asking. They dragged Dean away.Â
Dean and Cas have been best friends since they were kids. When Dean is drafted into the Confederate army, to what lengths will Castiel go to ensure that Dean makes it back home alive?
OH BOY. OHHHHH I could talk about that one until the day I die. Itâs a complete AU but it has great parallels to canon, itâs incredibly well written, humanity in all itâs ugly truth and âI will fight for you âtil the last, Dean Winchesterâ jesus christ itâs so good, so good
Out of the Deep - https://archiveofourown.org/works/548878
Stay away from the light-beds. Stay in the deep.
It is the first thing hatchlings are taught the moment their fans unfurl and they can swim without their parents to buoy them along. It is the first rule, the first law. It is the beginning of every boogey-monster bedtime story told when they settle against the cliffs to sleep.
Castiel should have listened better.
I love everything she writes but I think this one if my favorite. Itâs sooooo long, and angsty as fuck but all ends well and it has some very fluffy moments. If youâre into this kinf of AU then 100% go for it.
To Raise a King - https://archiveofourown.org/works/1961403
This must be some kind of horrible joke at Castielâs expense. Is he truly expected to protect a King? One who has been their enemy for as long as he can remember? He is much more suited to being a part of the army, or at the very least someone who helps to train the knights. That would be far more preferred than having to watch over the King. It means Castiel would get to keep fighting â and thatâs the only way he knows to give meaning to his life.
An AU too, Cas is tasked to watch over Sam and Dean -thereâs an 8 year age difference between Dean and Cas. I loved it because itâs set over about 15 years and Cas is asexual and I love time period AU in general :â)
Painted Angels https://archiveofourown.org/works/1085792
Author Castiel Novak has finally hit the big time, with a book based on his failed college relationship with a brilliant painter. He's put all his pain behind him, but at a book signing, he comes face to face with Dean Winchester for the first time in twelve years, and the reunion doesn't go like Cas hoped. Dean's a broken man, with a lot of scars and secrets, shoulders weighed down by his demons and self loathing. Cas sees a second chance with the man he's never stopped loving, but Dean's moved on, and is about to get married. Sam launches a "brilliant" plan to reunite his brother and his best friend, but Cas is worried it will all blow up in their faces, and he'll go through the agony of losing Dean a second time.
This one is hard to read because for the most part, itâs heartbreaking. There are happy flashbacks all along but itâs still hard when what happens in the present itâs a fucking tragedy. But I would still read it a thousand times over, and the timestamp completely make up for all the pining and the angst. Itâs rare to find fics that last an entire lifetime.

Major Character Death
Yes. Iâm evil. I will make you cry. May the odds be ever in your favour.
Twist and Shout by gabriel and standbyme on AO3. (97,556 words).
Tags: AU.
My Rating: 5 stars.
Description:Â What begins as a transforming love between Dean Winchester and Castiel Novak in the summer of 1965 quickly derails into something far more tumultuous when Dean is drafted in the Vietnam War. Though the two both voice their relationship is one where saying goodbye is never a real truth, their story becomes fraught with the tragedy of circumstance. In an era where homosexuality was especially vulnerable, Twist and Shout is the story of the love transcending time, returning over and over in its many forms, as faithful as the sea.
Notes: First of all, this is the reason I am torturing myself and making this list. I absolutely cannot convey to you both how amazing this was and how much I cried. Seriously, I had to stop because I couldnât physically read it at one point. Every fandom has its own Twist and Shout (Iâm thinking Alone On The Water for Sherlock) and I donât think I will ever get over this.
Kiss You When Itâs Dangerous by zoemathemata on AO3. (57,593 words).
Tags: Temporary Character Death, Violence, Alternate Universe, Human Castiel, Suicide.
My Rating: 5 stars.
Description:Â When his partner Uriel, betrays him, Federal Agent Castiel Novak is saved from becoming a ritual sacrifice by brothers Dean and Sam Winchester. Discovering the world of the supernatural and learning about werewolves, wendigoes, vampires and things that go bump in the night also leads to learning more about Dean and the strange life he and his brother lead. The more he learns, the more Castiel finds himself drawn into Deanâs world and toward Dean himself.Until Uriel wants to complete the ritual he started.
Notes: Iâm not sure if it entirely counts as Major Character Death, but it is tagged as that, so weâll roll with it. The plot was fabulous, their relationship was as adorable as ever, and I loved it.
the inexhaustible silence of houses by Askance on AO3. (31,280 words).
Tags: Horror, Psychological Trauma, Domestic Violence.
My Rating: 5 stars.
Description:Â Almost two years after the world doesn't end, Castiel falls from graceâand loses his voice in the process. Notes: Excellently written, it made me cry, and the ending was incredible.
Outrun My Gun by Misachan on AO3. (33,070 words).
Tags: Time Travel, Slash, Hurt/Comfort, Alternate Universe, Ghosts.
My Rating: 5 stars.
Description:Â "The two of you are so stubborn you've made Heaven blink." Finally convinced that Sam and Dean will never say yes and accept their destinies, Heaven and Hell come up with a new plan, one that will redraw the Apocalypse and make everything run much more smoothly. All they need is Dean Winchester's soul.
Notes: Very cute and slightly depressing towards the end (which is all I expect from anything tagged major character death, if Iâm being honest).
Named by RC_McLachlan on AO3. (94,596 words).
Tags: Episode Related, Season 4, Alternate Canon.
My Rating: 4 stars.
Description: Jesus Christ is dead. Somehow, that isn't the worst part of Dean's week.
Notes: Weird plot, but I loved it! The plot twist was excellent, and Gabriel (plus his whole garrison) making pasta art made me laugh out loud. I only wish we could have seen Samâs inevitable bitchfit.Â
A (Somewhat) Brief Biography Of Dean Winchester by smile_for_me on AO3. (3,285 words).

My Rating: 3 stars.
Description:Â "You shouldn't have done it," Cas whispers. Of course Cas would know what he had done, Cas always knew everything even if he didn't tell him. "I could have waited." Dean smiled, pulling back just enough to see his familiar face. "You've always been the patient one out of the two of us," he replies softly. "I couldn't wait any longer." And then Dean kisses him. And that's when Dean is finally happy.
Or, the story of how Dean met Castiel and his life became infinitely better, until it didn't.
Notes: I didnât love it, but I didnât hate it. It just was what it was.Â
The Consequences of Falling by FayJay on AO3. (37,144 words).
Tags: Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester, Ruby, Castiel, Uriel.
My Rating: 3 stars.
Description: A story in fifteen parts, in which the angel Castiel finds himself put in an untenable position, and consequentially loses his grace. In which he goes on a roadtrip with a demon, discovers the delights of tequila and french fries and pie, plays a starring role in a virgin sacrifice, is deflowered by his favourite Winchester, and then gets some very unpleasant news indeed.
Notes: I actually kind of ship Ruby and Sam in this, which is weird because I was never quite sure when watching the show (Jared and Gen are cute though).
In the Spine by Castiel_Left_His_Mark_On_Me on AO3. (5,467 words).
Tags: Castiel-centric, Original Character Death(s), Letters, Love Letters, Secrets, Angst, Post-Canon, Unrequited Love, Heartbreak, Dreams, Supportive Sam, Demons, Fallen Castiel, Human Castiel.
My Rating: 2 stars.
Description:Â Sam finds an old letter that Dean wrote for Castiel.
Notes: It wasnât written particularly well so I kind of got the general gist of the work but I was mostly confused what was happening (that might just be me, though).
So, merry Christmas and a happy Halloween. I will not be held responsible for any tears shed. Also, Iâm fully aware that some of these may not classify as major character death in your mind - certainly some of them didnât for me - but the authors have tagged them all as that, and I donât know what else to tell you. Anyway, Iâm gonna go scrounge up enough money to watch season 12, so good luck, and donât forget the ice cream.
