But I personally prefer him only ever calling Dean by his first name, but saying it like it's the most endearing nickname. Like "Dean" is said in the same vein as "My heart, my soul, my everything". But there is no other word to describe how he feels other than saying Dean's name

I do think that Henry's father, as in the one who raised him as his son, is Martin. But I have to say, it does still look like Radzig did his best to at least keep Henry safe.

I mean, when you look at the Rattay map, his house is the only house that's behind the inner palisades. Like there’s other buildings, but they're either storage or what looks like stables?

Like Radzig made sure he would live in a place where it'd be easy for him to get to the castle if Skalitz was attacked. And when Skalitz was attacked, we saw that Martin and Henry would have been one of the first people to get there because they were so close by. It was a stroke of bad luck that Henry’s mother was in the middle of the village when the raid occurred.

I think Radzig didn't specifically pick a blacksmith because they're not ”simple peasants” (so a status thing), but also because it’d make it easy for him to justify having Martin and his family live in a strategic (meaning defendable) place like that. I mean, even in Rattay, the blacksmith is located very close to the upper castle, so I’m assuming it was a common thing to do, to keep blacksmiths near the castle? It does make sense, since you’d probably want to keep the guy who forges your weapons close by.

(Not to make everything about Hansry, but I can totally see Hans using that excuse to have Henry live nearby)

radzig was a beholder to henry’s life not out of lack of care but precisely otherwise. it needs to be understood that radzig could never have been a warm participant, and certainly could not have played the doting father.

and put oneself in the shoes of henry’s mother, whose pregnancy not only infringed wedlock but class, yet whose child was raised by a socially sound and kind man. she loved martin and could do so freely! they were so secure in their love, in fact, that they could share a joke about their son’s blue-bloodedness without an ounce of insecurity. she found her disposition a great blessing! imagine having this unique contentment within your grasp while living by the palisades of an over-involved lord? a lord whose entitlement won over his judgement? a lord who invites rumor and ignores anxiety? a lord who loves but fails to see he does one more thing above all: to lord over.

all three of henry’s parents acted as wisely as they could have. radzig’s abstention was a kindness. even after the reveal, prudence remains the better part of valour: he may not hold his son’s hands but he allows them to be equipped. henry’s lot in life was sealed by pragmatism which can look a great deal like indifference to modern eyes. but make no mistake, he was and is cared for.
