is anyone interested in a wyatt fic? idk, but I've been working on one that covers the space between where we left off season 4 and where I imagine season 5 will start. still in progress bc unknowns about s5 haven't been helping writers block lol. sharing this start here because I've never worked with a sensitivity reader and/or beta reader before, but really think this fic might benefit from one if there's someone who would be interested. if that's you, feel free to contact me! for now, here's the first portion of the fic:

Wyatt Harris knew better than most how a person’s whole world could change in an instant.

He had lived it: See, one day, your dream job is a career in tech. You’re waiting to see if you get a make-up interview for an internship at one of the most prestigious firms in the country. Then the building is collapsing, with your dad in it.

One day, you’re at an internship. Then your boss, who you are realising is actually kind of toxic, is giving you a lecture on how lucky you should feel doing grunt work that doesn’t help anyone but the wallets of him and his investors, and it dawns on you that your dream job might not be what you it thought it was.

One day, you’re telling your mom your doubts about college, about your career plan. Then she’s telling you you’ll go to college anyway. Give it the college try, so to speak. Gain access to the opportunities she didn’t have. And you listen, and your doubts abate. And you enroll.

One day, you’re just hanging out in the dorms, avoiding your roommate. Then you meet a girl.

And you and her are just having fun. Until you’re not.

And so you’re in a degree programme, and then you’re not.

You’re training to becoming a firefighter. You study fire science, learn the basics of first aid, emergency response. You climb ropes and ladders daily, you already have job offers lined up. You’re the top of your class. Then you’re not.

You are out cycling. Then you’re not.

God I love the episodes of Leverage that are like “yes Eliot is working class. yes he grew up surrounded by trades people and “menial” labourers. yes he knows so much about those jobs and will ALWAYS support those workers and their job choices.”

Because it’s something that really does set Eliot apart from the other characters. Like, Sophie is all about the finer things in life, and even if she did ever grow up poor or around labourers, she doesn’t exactly respect that life style. She’s all about getting away from that, if she ever was that lower class, which I don’t think she ever really was. Nate is Office Worker tm, just in vibes. That man has never seen a shovel. And while Parker and Hardison both went through the system, they’re both very city centric. And I mean, Parker has never once thought about real jobs or anything, ever. And Hardison definitely has a bit of a thing about age of the geek, and def starts out looking down on “menial” jobs.

But Eliot, throughout the entire show, is very much all about that. The mining episode in particular is such a favourite just because of the respect and care for these workers that Eliot shows. And I really like how different all of the leverage characters are, not just in skills but also in backgrounds, and how those backgrounds affect how they treat people. Eliot comes from a family of workers and a community of workers, and he holds those people in such high respect.

Signs You May Be a Living Doll

Sometimes, living dolls spend so much time around real people that they forget what they are (or are made to think they are human when first constructed as some sort of unkind joke). If you suspect that you or a loved one may really be a living doll, consider the following signs:

Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment.

Jointed limbs.

A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterised by alternating between extremes of idealisation and devaluation.

A distinctive clock-like ticking instead of a heartbeat.

Identity disturbance: markedly and persistently unstable self-image or sense of self.

A marked affinity for household chores.

Chronic feelings of emptiness.

A circular hole in the upper back where a large key might fit.

If you meet 5 or more of these criteria, you may be a living doll and should admit yourself to the nearest toy hospital or Dollrescue at first convenience. Helpful links are included below.

Hey hi hello to any fellow Brits reading this.

You probably know we have a general election coming up, which by the way, make sure you're registered to vote and have the qualifying photo ID.

And hey maybe you're a fence-sitter who doesn't want to vote for Labour for whatever reason.

Well, this post is giving you a reason to vote for Labour (or any party other than Tory if the candidate actually has a chance to win the seat).

You might have noticed that a lot of local and city councils have either gone bankrupt recently or are teetering on the edge, and that officially, it's the councils themselves that have been blamed, and uh yeah, that's horseshit.

The majority of a local council's funding comes from core grants given out by Westminster.

There's actually a limit on funding that local councils can raise via taxes, and like a whole lot of issues in the UK, that comes down to Margaret fucking Thatcher. It's also thanks to her that local councils don't have as much power over the local area as you'd ideally want them to.

(That's been eased a little since, but if a local council ain't got the money, they can't exercise that power.)

Suffice to say, local councils are very much dependent on funding from the central government.

And as you might imagine, 14 years of Tory government has just made it worse. From 2010 to 2020, that funding was cut by 40%.

Wanna know why hundreds of libraries have closed down? Or why public services like bin collections are almost entirely ran by corporations? Or why bin collections are now once a fortnight rather than once a week? Or why council houses haven't been built? Or why public toilets are being closed? Or why you have to Tokyo Drift on the drive to work because it's been 2 years and no one's done shit about that goddamn pothole? Or why parks seem to now be maintained by Big Foot and by the way Big Foot has also declared bankruptcy? Or why local arts have had their budget of 17 paperclips and a whistle reduced down to 10 paperclips and no whistle? Or why your local museum is effectively a mausoleum?

It is all down to this.

Your local council runs on a shoestring budget because Tory rule has deprived local councils of the funding that they need.

If the Tories win in July, this problem is just gonna get worse and worse and worse.

More councils are going to go bankrupt; more public services are going to be cut or underfunded; more vulnerable kids are going to fall through the cracks; more local services will be privatised; more pressing issues will be ignored because there's no money left over to fix it.

You might not like the current Labour party, but hi hello welcome to harm reduction politics. Maybe a Labour government won't fix this, but another 5 years of Tory rule is going to break this country.

So for god's sake, get over yourself and your leftist purity bullshit, and just fucking vote for Labour as a vote against the Tories.

I saw it in your tag game post that you're also fond of the Apollo-Heracles conflict 👀 for a myth that appears in only a couple of sources, it sure has a lot of presence in the vase paintings (no seriously, everytime I think I've seen the last of it, I find ten more)

SO do you have any favorites among the paintings that represent this story??

I also think it's extremely interesting that it's a story so popularly portrayed by vase paintings and in such a variety of ways!! It's certainly one of the stories that gets left out of written compilation of Heracles' legend a bit (which is a shame, I think it's a fantastic story) but Apollo had a very peculiar relationship with Heracles in general that I just kind of find amazing (and very, very funny).

Apollo is not a god with any legitimate grudge against Heracles, but he does argue with the mortal a bit like he argues with his favourite brothers 😂Part of why I love the story of Apollo and Heracles fighting over the tripod so much is that it is such a little brother thing for Heracles to be upset with the proclamation his elder brother has given him and so, he throws a great fit, taking up the chair and declaring that he'll just give himself a better prophecy! And Apollo, instead of being a marginally professional big brother, decides to fight him for it until their father has to break up their cat-fight. Like was that not just the plot of the Homeric Hymn to Hermes? Is this not exactly how Apollo treated Hermes when he was a child and now those two are inseparable? 💀

Because of this, my favourite vase paintings tend to be the ones that highlight the personal squabbling between Apollo and Heracles the most. There are some very elaborate ones that have the full host of them - Athena, Heracles, Apollo, Artemis, usually a dog and a doe, I've even seen a couple that had birds and plants etched on them, but the simplest ones that show Heracles about to bonk Apollo with his club out of frustration or depict Heracles nyooming away from Apollo while Apollo (presumably) yells curses about how he's going to fling Heracles head first into Tartarus for daring to take his things? Yeah, those are the premium big brother/little brother things I'm looking for.
