Would you mind expanding upon Shudō (hope I spelled that right 😭🙏)

I've tried looking it up to learn more about it but I always get conflicting answers

I do my best translating the information I have about Shudō since I tried to find information in English, but I haven't seen much, or at best it's poorly translated or decontextualized (Sort of happened the same in Spanish)

Advise!!! The infomation I have comes in part from what has been described to me in some discussions in my history classes, something that happened several years ago and I don't have the proper context of why that talk was given in the first place, and information that I have collected and summarized from different historical blogs and websites that probably have points of view and prejudices that do not allow a clear definition of the concepts to be described. Any error you see in the information please give a advise or correct me.

From the medieval period (1185 - 1603) until the end of the 19th century, Shudō (abbreviated as Wakashudo) was a common practice and seen as normal among the samurai society of Japan. Shudo can be translated as “the way of the young man”, “the road of the young man” or “the path of awakening”. It consisted of homosexual practices between a young man and his master, as a form of sexual awakening, but above all to instill values ​​such as honesty and virtue.

In the couple, Nenja is used to describe the older man and Wakashū is for the youngest man.

The primary objective of shudo was to prevent men from having their first sexual contact with women since they could acquire “feminine habits” or “become feminized”. The warrior had to be anything but docile or sensitive, attributes considered exclusive to women in those times.

The term shudō appeared for the first time in the 17th century; it's preceded by the Japanese homosexual tradition among bonzes and acolytes, known as chigo. The legendary and supposed founder of this type of relationship in Japan was Kūkai, also known as Kōbō Daishi, the founder of the Shingon monastery, who is said to have brought with him the knowledge of male love along with the knowledge of Shingon. Mount Koya, where Kōbō Daishi's monastery stands today, was synonymous with male love until the end of the pre-modern period.

Despite the attribution of male love to Kūkai, the actual roots of homosexuality in Japan can be traced back to some of the earliest Japanese texts such as the Kojiki and the Nihonshoki. The teachings of shudō entered the literary tradition and can be found in works such as the Hagakure and other samurai manuals. Shudō, in its pedagogical, martial, and aristocratic aspects, is similar to some ancient Greek traditions.

The practice was held in high regard and was encouraged, especially within the samurai class. Was considered beneficial to youth, teaching them virtue, honesty, and appreciation of beauty. It's value is contrasted with the love of women, which is blamed for the ''feminization of men.''

PoMo my BELOVED it's just. Like. I cannot say a thing about this story without it sounding absolutely unhinged it is also full of Fucked Up Shit (TM). It is all the worst implications of @20dimensionsoftangerine's Properties series and the most fucked up version of Midnight Oil Riz because instead of his Emotional Support Abernant being a friend, Adaine's functionally his slave, even if he refuses to acknowledge that.

With all of that being said, Kalina actually gets off very easy for a story where 'everyone gets Worse' is a major theme. For context, PoMo is a 'The Nightmare King Wins' AU (it's also a Royals AU but that's not particularly relevant to Kalina) and, in Midnight Oil, 'The Nightmare King Wins' also means Riz gets his parents back! Pok gets raised from the dead and Sklonda is teleported to the middle of nowhere with her dead husband, her dead son, her husband's murderer and the woman who groomed her son, and her son's slave. It's a great and normal time for everyone.

So while Riz's reward is that he gets his parents back, Kalina gets... a body. She still has many of the advantages of being a plague, but after the resurrection, she's a fully fledged person! Does she know how to be a person? No. She was made as a familiar and then transformed into a plague and, now, a person. With free will and feelings and about fifteen existential crises that she does not want to deal with thank you very much.

But, eventually, after Pok bows out of the story for Moral Reasons and Sklonda stays behind, well... It's (partially) Midnight Oil continuity, and while they couldn't fuck there for Thematic reasons, PoMo is for all the Dark Themes of its sources. So: Skalina. Yuri more toxic than a nuclear reactor.

And even in spite of that, Kalina figures her shit out. She learns how to be a person, she learns how to love, and how to regret, and how to grieve. She comes to terms with life and death and self-actualizes in a way very, very few characters in PoMo get to. Which doesn't mean she's not a little shit, of course, just that she is a person outside of her relationship to the Nightmare King--or even Cassandra.

For a story that barely exists, @20dimensionsoftangerine, @domesticice and I have written and plotted a truly unconscionable amount of this AU and it's been an absolute delight. There's a lot more than I've shared here but due to it's dark content and the disjointed nature of the parts we have written, it doesn't look like something we're going to share large swathes of publicly, but we are very happy to yap about it in DMs and on Discord.

I'll be honest I'm also a long time fan like I was there when the "how did we get here" part was uploaded on youtube before being yeeted. I still remember when Jack found my art the first time back on sketchbook paper in like 2019 or something on instagram. And now... he found my art again just way in the future lol, he probs doesn't remember at all.

I just recently got back into it after re-binging all 4 books and all the free stuff on the blogs and youtube in october.

Also I cant say much on TFTR (like we know hes continuing the series of course like thats what he did with the abandoned zoo but how he goes about that is only privy to him) buuuuutttt if you go look at his blog rn in the story index all the way at the bottom looks like there was an update... and frankly I am excited if thats true cuz I wasn't actively there for Bedside Manor as it was coming out and I know it was an ARG- SO IF WHAT THAT TITLE SAYS IS TRUE. I am so onboard for what comes next.

The guy who plays the wizard in our Curse of Strahd game has repeatedly made references to how said wizard is a somewhat older guy whose clothes are well-maintained but very out of date, and whose hems are all falling out because he can't Mend those and hasn't learned to sew them back up, and who overall can be described as a guy who has "really let himself go," and I THINK it is meant in a way that is supposed to make us think poorly of him, but like. Idk how to tell the player that making a fat, cringefail wizard who loves magic and wine and sharing fun facts with the group - who has a ridiculous confidence in himself and his abilities but who folds immediately under the BAREST application of authority - is like fucking catnip to both me and to Wyn.

Weird how time flies. I got to know one of them through them drawing fanart for one of my fics. Which was... I don't even know how long ago now? @sightkeeper how long have we known each other now? Anyway what's even weirder is that it's now already been almost a year since we met up in person. I travelled to Canada to spend 2 weeks with a bestie that I'd have never had known if not for GF.
