Guardian of the Wild Places

WARNING: Unicorns are wild animals, and can be very dangerous. If you happen to be (un)lucky enough to encounter one, do not approach if you value your life. They are extremely territorial and protective of their home ranges, and have been known to kill seemingly without provocation those who they perceive as a threat to their charges.

This was the result of my thoughts about this post, and fucking around with @morningstarequestrian's new Wild Horse Set (part 2). Thank you SO much for feeding my fantasy horse dreams.

MERSKELES PART 3!

and some explanation on why I choose what I did under the cut

So from left to right

Dream is a golden colored koi carp fish, I picked it because they are very pretty and they represent a lot of positive things like luck and fortune, some people even wish on them to make their dreams come true :> I also thought of the legend where a golden koi fish climbs a large waterfall to turn into a dragon, so they have some mythical legends as well. In terms of the actual fish, Koi are very sociable and sturdy, they also live for quite awhile.

Nightmare is a coelacanth, he should probably be an octopus considering he has tentacles, but I really wanted to make him a coelacanth because I think they are neat. Coelacanth's are very old with the latest fossils being over 400 million years old, they were thought to be extinct until one was found in 1938, grandpa nightmare. They are also nocturnal, sleeping in caves during the day, they live deep in the ocean as well. 

Fresh is actually a two in one, he is a rainbow parrotfish with a tongue-eating louse in his mouth. Out of alI the bright fish I did a parrotfish because I really like their gradients, and I think the magenta fins fit his jacket. He's a parasite inside of a Sans body, so I picked a fish parasite to go along with the fish half of his body. I chose the tongue-eating louse, a type of parasite that replaces a fish's tongue. It first severs the blood vessels to the tongue and once it falls off takes its place. feeding on nutrients and acting as a new tongue for the rest of the fish's life, very cool and terrifying.

I realized that Maizuru, despite being with Kabru's party for a while, still gets Holm's race wrong.

At first I thought it was kind of the joke of the whole thing. Calling Marcille a frog woman, Holm a dwarf, and getting Rin's name wrong. Holm looks tired, annoyed or maybe a bit embarrassed by this mistake. He's the only one who's background is not "explosive". Marcille's and Rin's are, and his is just plain, dark, and with those lines at the bottom. Why? Maybe for comedical effect. Probably because he's been telling her he's a gnome before this. Just like Chilchuck doesn't like being called a kid and people still call him that, Holm doesn't like being called a dwarf and people keep calling that.

It's not uncommon for people to mix those races, and since Shuro's party isn't the best with races (they don't even know Chil's a half-foot) they probably just think Holm is a wierd-looking dwarf. They probably hadn't seen any gnomes before. If it was Maizuru's first time seeing a gnome and calling it a dwarf, it could be understandable. But she's been with kabru's party long enough to realize that that dwarf is, actually, a gnome.

I think she doesn't believe Holm is a gnome, just like Marcille or Senshi don't believe Chil's an adult.

That's the face of someone who's tired of this shit. It's like when someone tries to guess your country just by the way you look. There's maybe a bit of ignorance at first, but I think Maizuru is deliberately deciding to not believe Holm when he tells her he's a gnome for the first time. And he's so done.

Tulli and I were talking about how it would be fun to go with a different art direction for each GG20s story that reflects different animated movies/eras/studios of the mid-1900s. For theming and immersion, we're setting the "production" of The Grand Galloping 20s around the 1960s. So imagine an animated film/cartoon/comic created in the 1960s about a story set in the 1920s. That being said, we're not gonna be able to resist pulling inspiration from 80s Don Bluth movies.

So far, we're thinking of having the first 3 stories (Nightmare Moon, Gala, Wedding) styled after Disney fairytale storybook films and Starlight's story styled after the xerox era (we've been looking at 101 Dalmatians). The smaller, shorter stories would be styled after animated shorts like UPA films, Silly Symphonies, Peanuts specials, and Looney Tunes (Pinkie is a perfect slapstick Looney Tunes character too).

More to come on this, just some thoughts.
