Hi there, I'm Ida!
Do you have a new house in Southern Adelaide that needs a garden? Or perhaps want to refresh your current garden into a unique and low-maintenance space? Interested in learning more about native plants and attracting birds and butterflies to your garden?
You've come to the right place!
I design front and back gardens to suit your individual and site needs, with a focus on native plants to attract birds, butterflies, provide bush foods, and ensure you have a beautiful garden requiring little ongoing maintenance.
I am passionate about plants and I'm looking forward to chatting with you and making your space beautiful!
Contact me for a consultation, where I will talk with you and assess your space, then head off to hand-draw an individual garden design, and bring that to you to discuss and make any changes.
I also do small garden jobs, maintenance, and can assess larger properties for revegetation projects.

Legends and myths about trees
Trees in Buddhism (1)
Fig trees (Ficus) - Trees that bear fruit without flowering
“Enter the fig forest and seek the flowers, but get none. In the world of the three realms (Trailokya: Ref), you seek the unwavering and you do not get one. The practitioner who knows this, forsakes this and that together...like a snake shedding its old skin.” - Buddha
Above is an extract from a verse of the Buddha in the Sutta Nipata No.5.
A common feature of the fig genus (ficus) is the peculiar inflorescence. They appears as if it suddenly bears fruit without flowering. They are hermaphrodites or dioecious, collectively known as fig trees or figs. These belonging to the family Moraceae have about 850 species and are native throughout the tropics, with a few species also found in semi-temperate zones.
Hermaphrodites are generally those that have male and female reproductive organs in one individual. Those that do not are referred to as gonochoric. In the case of plants, they are referred to as monoicous and dioicous, respectively.
The fig fruit develops as a hollow, fleshy structure called the syconium that is lined internally with numerous unisexual flowers. The tiny flowers bloom inside this cup-like structure. The small fig flowers and later small single-seeded (true) fruits line its interior surface. At maturity, these 'seeds' (actually single-seeded fruits) line the inside of each fig.
The fruit of most species are also edible though they are usually of only local economic importance or eaten as bushfood. However, they are extremely important food resources for wildlife. Figs are also of considerable cultural importance throughout the tropics, both as objects of worship and for their many practical uses.
The Bodhi tree is well known for Siddhartha Gautama (Ref2) sat under the tree, meditated and finally attained enlightenment becoming the Buddha, also known as "sacred fig tree", belongs to this fig family.

Seen multiple 'pick an aussie food' polls now where every option is a modern snackfood etc like vegemite or musk sticks or what have you but then they just? Throw witchetty grubs in there pressumably because people find eating bugs polarising
But its weird vibes to have a token aboriginal bushfood option just to freak people out. Very weird vibes.

Detailing the Key Concept
What Plants should be Included? considering plants that are shown as being native to Hamilton, and are also included in the free Indigenous plant species that the Brisbane City Council provides
blue flax lily (dianella caerulea) -> attracts birds & lizards; edible blueberries; leaves traditionally used for cord & string; fruit juice can serve as antiseptic for sea ulcers
matrush (lomandra filiformis) -> attracts lizards & frogs; edible base of leaves, flowers & seeds; roots were used as medicine for insect bites
tea tree (leptospermum whitei) -> attracts insects & bees; leaves crushed & inhaled to alleviate colds/coughs; creating tea tree oil (anti-bacterial & anti-fungal)
bottlebrush (callistemon) -> attracts birds & insects; can make tea out of leaves & blossoms
myrtle (melaleuca; backhousia) -> attracts birds & insects; edible flowers, leaves & berries; creating oil (anti-bacterial & anti-fungal)
banksia (banksia) -> attracts birds; edible flowers, leaves & seeds; leaves can make tea; root is anthelmintic
tukeroo (cupaniopsis anacardioides) -> attracts birds, bees & insects; edible fruit & tubers
Implementation Plan
As the Northshore Hamilton area is legally owned by EDQ, it qualifies as Council land, making it an area that is automatically eligible to receive 50 free plants from the Brisbane City Council
EDQ requests plants listed above from Council -> utilises existing plants to grow more
once garden is eventually developed, public access opens, within specified time periods
classes/workshops will be led by willing members of Indigenous communities/people who are well-versed in botany -> free/discounted tickets for site residents; payments generate revenue for EDQ

Kakadu plum and Eucalyptus strawberry gum Italian meringue
what is it?
traditionally Italian meringue is a simple Swiss meringue where instead of cold boring plain sugar, hot, 115 degree, not at all a burning hazard, exciting sugar is added. not only does this create the most stable meringue you can possibly make, its suuuper safe to eat right out of the gate. usually one will find these puppies bland, sad, and unsweetened, I however have added Kakadu plum and Eucalyptus strawberry gum to create a delicate little desert
WHAT THE HIFL IS A MERINGUE??????
well well, now that you ask a meringue is, a French confection or candy that is typically produced with sugar and whipped egg whites, with the occasional addition of an acidic element like lemon, vinegar, or cream of tartar. The eggs may also be mixed with a binder, such as gelatine, flour, or salt. The secret to making an excellent meringue is to denaturize the egg white protein ovalbumin through mechanical shear in order to create rigid peaks.
ok , but why Kakadu plum and Strawberry Eucalyptus gum?
'twas evident among my surveyee's that something sweet and delectable was desired so i concocted in my noggin to create a meraingue, not only is it small and rich and flavourfull, it is easilly scaleable so i reasoned that i would need sweet indegenious spices to make this suitible for the naidoc celebration i chose to add Kakadu plum and Strawberry eucalyptus gum.
What is a Kakadu plum even?
Kakadu plum is a stone fruit with a green colouration most of the fruit is edible it contains a stewed apple and pear aroma, cooked citrus and a floral-musk note. Taste is sour with some astringency. it can be bought freeze dried, fresh or powdered (i only had access to the powdered form). its currently only wild harvested (so very expensive, hard to acquire and labor intensive) however commercial plantations are currently being investigated
Strawberry gum??
With a flavour described as sweet, aromatic, and like a blend of berry and passionfruit, the dried, crushed leaves of the Strawberry gum are also employed as a complimentary or enhancing spice in bushfood preparation. Only the Gibraltar Range National Park and the neighbouring Timbarra Plateau are home to this eucalyptus. For their crystalline essential oils used in flavouring and perfumery, Strawberry gum plant leaves are distilled. The yield of the 98% methyl cinnamate leaf oil is 2-6% of the weight of the fresh leaf. High anti-oxidant activity can be found in leaf extracts in hexane, methanol, and ethyl acetate solvents.
RECIPIE!!!!!!
kakadu plum
Strawberry gum
200g white sugar
60ml water
pinch of cream of tartar
4 egg white
boil sugar, water, and cream of tartar to hard ball stage of 121 Celsius (to ensure the sugar does not go past this stage it is advisable to remove at 115 Celsius)
while sugar is cooking beat egg whites to full peak, and while stiff, beating slowly, pour on the boiling sugar and mix, add appropriate amount of Strawberry gum and Kakadu plum
you can eat this raw, however it is best to pipe it into meringues and bake at a low temperature for ~30 minutes or until it can hold its shape when handled but is still marshmallowy

First Mushroom Harvest
Tumblr media
First mushroom harvest for us! A couple of hours of wandering inthe Pine forest gave me a great workout and the bonus of a free feed or two or three…
In the basket are delicious Saffron Milk Caps (Lactarius deliciosus) and Laccarias (Laccaria sp).
This lot are being dried as I type and the house is full of the smell of mushrooms…
I’ve learned of a few other edibles out that way so might zip out…

Went for a short hike and a bush lunch today. I made steak on the Firebox, green chili shrimp over my Pathfinder Alcohol Stove and red beans and rice over my PF Alcohol stove as well. The rice and beans was a mix that was actually really tasty. Everything was really good except I feel I could have cooked the shrimp less, they were a bit rubbery, but the flavor was great! I used my Stanley Basecamp Cookset and my Pathfinder Canteen Kettle with a surplus Esbit burner to boil my coffee water. What can I say, I love bush cooking! I like messing around with all the different stoves and pots and pans. It all cooked up.nicely considering it was 0c and a 20kph wind. I went out with my good friend @bearbasher76 It was a good time! #lunch #bushcraft #bushcraftcooking #hiking #backpacking #bushfood #cooking #outdoorcooking #grilling #redbeansandrice #steak #shrimp #stanley #pathfinder #selfreliance #selfrelianceoutfitters #surplus #esbit #spiritburner #alcoholburner #alcoholstove #haxamineburner #saskatchewan #canada #prairiefirebushcraft (at Echo Valley Provincial Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwDH5CahFnm/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1aehwhoslvhwk

I needed a snack for my 2 hour drive today and really didn't want to buy junk food so I shook the branches of the Coast Bear Heath (Leucopogon parviflorus). Its white fruit tastes like a creamy lemon-filled grape. Delicious and refreshing! They're found in most coastal habitats in Victoria and stretch west to South Australia and as far north as the south coast of Queensland. So if you can out-muscle the flocks of awkward seagulls that hover over these shrubs then it's well worth the effort. A five minute forage will give you a couple of handfuls, more than enough natural sugar to last a 2 hour drive. 🌏 -- #coastbeardheath #leucopogonparviflorus #breakfast #foraging #edibleearth #forager #wildfoods #wildfood #wildfruit #nativeplants #native #australiannative #nativeflora #nature #bushtucker #bushfoods #bushfood #australia #australiana #wild #australian #SAV #StudioApartmentVan #van #vanlife #campervan #camping #australianwild #australiancoast #morningtonpeninsular #vantravel #camperlifestyle

***Know the Australian wonders*** Warrigal greens - This widely distributed plant has many common names, depending on its location. In addition to the name New Zealand spinach, it is also known as Botany Bay spinach, Cook's cabbage, kōkihi (in Māori), sea spinach, and tetragon. Its Australian names of Warrigal Greens and Warrigal Cabbage come from the local use of warrigal to describe plants that are wild (not farmed originally). It is a widespread species, native to eastern Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Its natural habitat is sandy shorelines and bluffs, often in disturbed areas. It is a halophyte and grows well in saline ground. As some of its names signify, it has similar flavour and texture properties to spinach, and is cooked like spinach. Like spinach, it contains oxalates; its medium to low levels of oxalates need to be removed by blanching the leaves in hot water for one minute, then rinsing in cold water before cooking. It thrives in hot weather, and is considered an heirloom vegetable. #native #bushfood #green #natural https://www.instagram.com/p/CJlMf-KsELs/?igshid=16p2atrtl6ly9
