reminder that this blog completely and unequivocally supports Muslims. Muslim men, Muslim women, Muslim non-binary people, Muslim trans people, queer Muslims of all kinds. Muslims who don’t use white terminology for their genders and/or orientations. Black Muslims, dark-skinned Muslims, fat Muslims, disabled Muslims. Niqabis, burqabis, hijabis, and Muslims who don’t wear head/body coverings for whatever reason. If you are a Muslim, and especially if you’re a queer Muslim, you deserve to be safe here and at pride. You deserve to be surrounded by people who not only tolerate, but actively love and respect ALL parts of you. You deserve to wear your head coverings without fear at pride events and everywhere else. And if you’re a non-Muslim who can’t agree with everything in this post then you are not safe here, and don’t deserve to be at pride. Respect Muslims, or get the fuck out of here.

Y’know, if you think about it, our ID cards already contain biometric data. It’s just that we don’t need fancy equipment to use it to verify someone’s identity. Evolution has already devoted more time to developing specialized wetware for the task than any human project could ever spare. I’m referring, of course, to the face.
What else is photo ID, than using all those sophisticated facial-recognition heuristics — refined to a high pitch over the struggle to thrive in a social species — that are conveniently preinstalled in an immediately accessible, intuitively usable, securely attached package in most users’ brain?
Which suggests some other low-tech biometric ID methods — which are probably already in use somewhere in the world, but I’m not going to let that stop me from speculating. Fingerprints, for instance. Instead of a photo of the face, embed a fingerprint in a clear window. Then verifying ID just requires an inkpad and paper: just place the ID over the print and rotate/fiddle until both line up. A little more equipment than comparing a photo to a face, but not much or hard-to-find.
For security purposes, I’d want an iron-clad custom of giving the paper with the fingerprint back at the end. Actually, stores could even leave space on the receipt, which is one less thing to worry about. The procedure would also be simple to explain and do out-of-state — important for traveling. Many places keep inkpads around for stamping stuff to file anyhow. In a pinch, ball point ink works (scribble over your finger then stamp), or even body-oil + flour.
For niqabis and burqabis, who have religious objections to showing their face, it really does seem like a reasonable accommodation. I’m imagining this coming out of a US state with a lot of Muslims. IIRC maybe Michigan might fit the bill? But “the street finds its own uses”. I’m sure that many others would take advantage if they could. It should be just another standard question at the DMV, making the fingerprint option normal and accessible. After “Would you like to be an organ donor?” comes “Would you like a photo or fingerprint on your card?”
Dunno if you could pull the same trick with retinas or lip prints, but there probably are other easy biometric IDs. Can you fit a good-enough speaker onto an ID card? Basically, press play and the card plays a recording of holder reciting some anodyne text, which you can then listen to while they recite it in front of you. Though voices are lots more variable than faces, and my voice recognition is worse than facial, so maybe it wouldn’t be as reliable.

Burqa?
The name of the garment escapes me but
I.... I kind of want to wear those garments that hide the entire body.
Don't hate me, it's not to get closer to Allah, it's because I'm so afraid of being seen....
But because I live in the USA, and my area is mostly white (like me), I'd probably be more noticeable than wearing regular USAmerican clothes....
Plus, I have over heating issues so I'd probably be very uncomfortable....
I hope Allah can guide me into not being so afraid of the world....
