Brown Dyke
I used to envy white femmes
I used to feel like I was standing outside the dyke bar, peering in through the window
As butches and worlds fell at their feet
I used to stand at the mirror, imagining myself with a smaller nose and narrower hips
So that I could be beautiful like the white femmes
Something changed, I don't know exactly when, maybe it happened gradually
I started to see beauty in my brownness, in my big nose and broad shoulders
I wore indian clothing to a pride event, and a stud called me beautiful
And I started to understand that in being brown, I had my culture behind me
I can be femme in a different way that only people of colour can
And that is something beautiful
I used to envy white femmes
Now I pity them
(poem by me, Samira T)

An informational comic I drew last year for my Comics 2 class, reposting it to my new account (had to jump ship from the old one unfortunately) with some minor grammar changes and learned my lesson in adding watermarks! Happy early pride :)

“I am typing these words as June 2003 surges with Pride. What year is it now, as you read them? What has been won; what has been lost? I can’t see from here; I can’t predict. But I know this: You are experiencing the impact of what we in the movement take a stand on and fight for today. The present and past are the trajectory of the future. But the arc of history does not bend towards justice automatically—as the great Abolitionist Frederick Douglass observed, without struggle there is no progress . . .”
