Here's my fantasy post-btvs/angel world where no one died and the comics never happened

Buffy still fights against the forces of darkness but, since she's not the only slayer anymore, she's allowed to take breaks and not deal with every apocalypse by herself. She also gets paid monthly, along with all the new slayers.

Dawn went to study abroad and is now head of the new and reformed watchers council, where she works with Giles and Andrew delivering missions to the different slayers.

Also Dawn came out as a lesbian during college, and Tara was the first person she told.

Buffy and Spike are together, taking things slow and talking every step of the way (think their relationship in season 10 and 11, that's the only thing i can accept as canon from the mess that were the comics).

Spike works along with Buffy, they patrol together, and he still meets up with Clem for kitten poker (although he can't bear to eat the kittens when he wins)

Faith and Buffy have become really good friends, they're the only ones who know what being a slayer was before when there was only one, and they've bonded over their experiences and now get together quite often for coffee. Faith also works as a slayer so sometimes they go on missions together.

Tara and Willow live in a lovely cottage in the countryside and still help out on the fight whenever needed. Most of the time they sell potions and spells-in-a-bottle to the slayers.

Oz transitioned and now she and her new girlfriend are invited over to Willow and Tara's house every week for dinner and board games.

Anya now runs her own magic shop in L.A. She's going on dates but is mostly enjoying her independence. She's still in touch with the scooby gang but she has also made new friends in L.A.

Season 4 and 5 of Angel never happened so Cordelia, Fred and Wesley are alive and still working for Angel Investigations along with Gunn and Lorne.

Angel got to raise Connor since he was a baby with the help of his team, and Connor grew up surrounded by love

Cordelia and Anya reunite in L.A. and get together for drinks quite often to bitch about life for a few hours.

Harmony is thriving. So is drusilla.

I don't care how Xander is doing.

1. How did you get into writing fanfiction? Depends on how you define fic I guess. When I was very little, I would "tell myself stories" (literally I would just sit on the floor in my room and pronounce the story aloud) which were essentially self-insert fics about my favourite characters. I guess expansion has always been my automatic response to a story I like. My older sister was active in fandoms first, so I learned about fic from her, and when I ended up in a teeny tiny fandom with practically no content in my teens, writing fic was a very natural next step.

2. How many fandoms have you written in? *counts on my fingers* well, there was [REDACTED], [REDACTED], BTVS, Designated Survivor, and now L&Co. So actually not that many. When I fixate about something, I fixate long and hard and I don't have room for other obsessions.

3. How many years have you been writing fanfiction?

As above, really depends on how you define fic and how you define writing lol. If you're being exacting, uhhh about 15 years or so, but with long gaps in there. Years of actual productivity, probably more like 3 or 4.

4. Do you read or write more fanfiction? Very definitely read lol, I'm a slow writer and a fast reader. Trying to shift the balance however.

5. What is one way you've improved as a writer? I think my ability to plan and execute a large-scale project is increasing, as is my ability to actually dramatise a setting properly.

6. What's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project? Abdominal trauma recovery (for Gutted, my specialest little guy fic)

7. What's your favorite type of comment to receive on your work?

I love a comment from someone who Gets what I was going for. It doesn't have to be a long one, just something that shows me that yes, I communicated successfully here! (or just when people tell me unhinged things like "I'm chewing on this nomnomnomnom". I love that too)

8. What's the most fringe trope/topic you write about?

Easily the Catholic Lockwood stuff LOL.

9. What is the hardest type of story for you to write? It's not quite a story type, but I hate when you're trying to bring a character to the point of a certain realisation or decision and you have to describe their thought process and it's soooo hard to do cleanly and really I should have made this damn thing a conversation but it's TOO LATE NOW.

10. What is the easiest type? A conversation lol. Again, now specific type of story, but I love writing dialogue.

11. Where do you do your writing? What platform? Usually at my desk, on my computer. G Docs is my medium of choice - accessible anywhere, easily shared, easy to retrieve if you go somewhat crazy and delete everything...

12. What is something that you've been too nervous/intimidated to write, but would love to write one day?

The big "Lockwood reverts to his faith and Lucy converts" fic. Will I ever do it?? Who knows. I like thinking about it though.

13. What made you choose your username?

This is a great question, and the answer is I have NO clue. I didn't want it to be something that was easily identified as me (for anyone who knows me IRL, womaninwinter is quite a giveaway lol). I picked a phrase that came to mind and sounded moderately cool, and for some reason, the phrase was "Savoirfaire". (some unconscious snobbery about my writing abilities going on?? Perhaps!)

yes! i try my very very best to respond to all of them, especially on newer fics. i usually fall behind on older fics/don't prioritize responding as much, but if there's one that is really kind/really touches me i always make a note to respond.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

i've written a lot of depressing shit for the merlin fandom. i think winter always turns to spring might be one of the saddest all around, though.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

my hairdresser!steve fics are the happiest/fluffiest things i've ever written. but most of my fics have a happy ending! i think maybe memoria has one of the happiest tho?

8. Do you get hate on fics?

not really. i got One troll comment on a fic a few months ago that i just deleted and blocked lol.

9. Do you write smut?

every once in a while! i don't feel i'm very good at it, so it takes me a loooong time to write it when i do.

10. Do you write crossovers?

not in the traditional sense of combining fandoms, but if my btvs au counts as a crossover then yes?

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

not to my knowledge!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

yes! winter always turns to spring was translated into portuguese!

no but i've thrown around the idea with friends before (pax....mona....if u see this....hiiiiiii)

this is such a rude question tbqh !!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm going to default back and say merthur, because they were the one and only and a constant in my life for so long. (steddie and payneland make me so fucking crazy tho)

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

there is a steddie wip called "tightly hidden fists" i started in LITERALLY july 2022. it's still sitting in my google docs at 20k+ and i'm starting to doubt if i'll ever finish it. i keep considering signing up for a round of a steddie bang or something but i'm scared to do that to myself again lmfao.

16. What are your writing strengths?

i think i'm very good at dialogue, and getting The Voice of the character down. those things are usually what come to me first when i'm writing.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

for lack of a better word...filler? transitionary bits of fic. i overuse phrases/words like a madman, i also think i am a victim of trying to be too flowery when i can just, like, tone it the fuck down. are those weaknesses????

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

if it's easily translatable sentences (short and sweet, nothing too complicated) i put in the language in italics. (like, bonjour.) but frankly, i tend to avoid putting other languages in my fics. i don't often need to, and since i don't speak any language other than english i don't want to butcher anything if i can help it.

probably the peter pan self insert i wrote many times between the ages of like 8-12.

20. Favorite fics you've written?

My fics do not end angsty. Fallen Angel is unfinished and has an angsty middle, though. My Kent Parson playlist also definitely has a narrative to it and ends kind of bittersweet.

They pretty much all end happy. Maybe “it’s hard to make a conversation.”

Yes

Not on ao3, but I wrote an HP/BTVS crossover as a kid. I think that’s the only one I’ve ever written.

Fallen Angel in a Gay Bar; I have it outlined and everything, but I put it down and was never really able to pick it back up.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I’d say dialogue, especially between snarky characters. I think I’m alright at plot, too.

Probably character exploration and development, which is wild because that’s pretty much my favorite thing to read. I guess I admire people who can do it.

18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

There’s a ton in Camarades de Classe and I’m a little embarrassed about it. It is in the context of students, though, so if they fucked it up that’s on them. 😂 I think that one has a tiny bit of Spanish in that one, too, and this from before I started studying it so… pray for me.

I think it was probably Buffy? It may have been HP.

I didn't really have a fixed ship to hang my hat on in those days (aka the before the internet tiemz), but Buffy and Pike (movie BTVS) were the main couple I fixated on back then (still was figuring out why movie Lestat and Louis made me feel funny in my tummy at that time, so Buffy and Pike were the easier option LOL)

Roz and Dan from Night Court; I was 7 and I wanted them married and arguing until the end of time <3

3. Your first fanfic belonged to which couple?

(hops in the wayback machine) Pretty sure I was writing for Greg/Nick (CSI) just a bit before Ennis/Jack (Brokeback). Still so very thankful that those four introduced me to friends I'd still have in my life 20 years later!

4. Do you remember the first couple you saw a fanart over?

I very clearly remember the Spangel fanvids that took more than day to download from our AOL dialup, yes XD

5. Did you ever get into ship discourse?

Attempting to nail jello to a tree would be a far more productive use of my time.

6. Did you used to have any no-otp or have it currently?

Can't say anything comes to mind, really.

7. Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read?

Had to go through my AO3 history, last time I had a clear enough head to attempt to read anything was early autumn last year (oof) and it was a modern AU of Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang that I don't think I finished because I really can't recall any of it. Ah, well.

8. Currently, do you have any OTPs?

Since I can't engage in fic it's hard for me to keep hold of the newer ships, so my brain tends to fall back on old reliables- Loustat/Loumand being at the top at this very moment because the fandom's waking up again for season 2 in May.

9. Is there any couple that, to this day, you are extremely mad about not getting together?

Another one that I can't think of anything.

10. Is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they are kind of interesting?

Not Really, if I hated them then I'm sure I still hate them now. (keeping your answer here, Eboni, because same)

11. Do you have any ship that, in the past, was considered normal but now you would be cancelled over?

I'd be cancelled over any ship at any time for anything, such is the nature of this goofball puritanical mindset that has taken over fandom socmed. (I know the problem reaches so much further than that, but I'm not clearheaded enough to write a dissertation LOL)

12. What was your favorite crack ship?

Can't say I've ever had one.

13. Who is the couple you read more fanfics of?

20+ years ago I was slowly killing copious amounts of trees and our at-home printer with Spangel fics that I didn't want to lose (have since lost all of the printouts, and the fics are still online in their respective webrings, yikes) So yeah, Spangel would probably still win. Ennis/Jack, and Wangxian would round out the top three, I'm sure.

14. What most of your ships usually have in common?

Bastard-coated bastards, pastel/goth, grumpy/sunshine.

15. What do you absolutely hate in a ship?

Drawing a blank here. Though, I will have a harder time engaging if the source material is mainly written in 1st person POV, which is why I'd be considered a fake Vampire Chronicles fan XD (forever thankful for my friends that actually read the books and school me on what I don't know)

Okay just for fun I've been looking through my fics on ao3 to see how many pass the Bechdel Test.

YES im aware this isn't a perfect metric and that what really matters is the quality of the female characters, ALSO i'm aware that the test isn't intended for writing and it's difficult to pass when something's written from the perspective of a male character. Although I just think it's worth considering how much of my writing is centred on men in general, for my own interest haha.

To be absolutely clear I'm just doing this because it's fun/interesting/worth thinking about for myself, I will continue to write whatever the fuck I want, as should everyone else.

You don't have to look at the titles, I think the percentages are more interesting:

Fics that pass unequivocally**: The Darkest Days parts 1,2,3,4 / Lippy Kids / Paradise Circus / Something Like Love / Blazing / Burning / When You Come Back / Sea Legs / Of Isabela /

That's 12 out of 29 total, or 41%. (i'm rounding the percentages.)

Purple are the ones that fail the 'anti-bechdel test' (no two men ever even speak to each other lol) because there are barely any or are no male characters at all. Though in the case of Lippy Kids that's just because I turned most of the male characters into girls so it depends how you see that one. Manless fics are 8 out of 29, 28%

**There are two male-pov fics that might pass technically because female characters briefly discuss things with each other that aren't men. These are Playing With Fire and Things I've Never Done. I'm not sure whether to include these because it's so brief and men are at least loosely involved in the conversations. If I include these it's a more respectable 14 out of 29, or 48%, but I'm inclined not to include them.

Now I'm going to break it down differently:

Fics written exclusively from the POV of a man: Playing With Fire / She's in Parties / Pretty Girls Make Graves / The Silence of Another / Gold on the Ceiling / Housewarming / Curiousity / how to fall in love (for dorian pavus) / After Words / Hungry-eyed and Weather-stained / Youth is Wasted On the Young / Things I've Never Done / four funerals and a wedding / the waves and I found the riptide

That's an embarrassing amount rip... the red indicates fics where there are no speaking female roles at all. One thing I will say is that most of the above, particularly the red, are older fics, so it seems like I've gotten better about this over time.

Male-pov fics are 14 out of 29, or 48%.

For fics that have no speaking female roles, aka womanless fics, it's 5 out of 29 or 17%. There are two fics here (how to fall in love, Youth..) that have no speaking lines at all since they're just prose, but I'm not going to subtract these because they don't include any female characters doing anything else either lol.

Fics written exclusively from female POV: Lippy Kids / Paradise Circus / Something Like Love / Sea Legs / Blazing / Burning / Rematch / When You Come Back / Of Isabela / Lifeline / Will You Come With Me?

Okay originally I was going to list all fics that simply include a female pov and highlight the exclusively female POV fics, then I realised that the only fic I have with multiple povs is the Darkest Days series so that wasn't helpful. Anyway:

Female POV fics are 11 out of 29, or 38%. So, I don't love the fact that there's a whole 10% more male pov fics, honestly. (the remaining 14% are the 4 multi-pov parts of TDD) For the sake of my own ego I might try and change this in future lol.

It might be more accurate to base it on word count, because some of my longest fics include female povs, while a lot of the older male-pov ones are fairly short. But that's way too much effort and I won't do that.

To somewhat defend myself to myself, I think that at least a few of the male-pov fics are heavily about women, for example Pretty Girls Make Graves is Snape's perspective about Lily, or She's In Parties is a btvs fic from Spike's pov but is centred around his relationship with Drusilla. The aforementioned Things I've Never Done is a btvs fic from Xander's pov (an odd choice for me haha) but is really more about his observations on his female friends. Still ultimately man-centric but better than nothing I guess. This might be why there are a few more manless fics than womanless fics but who knows.

Anyway, interesting! I had fun doing this.

Most of my fics have happy endings, though I really like them with a tinge of uncertainty or bittersweetness.

the most straight up happily ever after is probably Hay, (Solavellan, E) which is just a very self-indulgent little happy fic.

9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?

I do write smut! I love writing smut, it's such a good challenge and it makes me happy. I love characterization through smut - and it's such an interesting way to do characterization. That said, sometimes I'm just thirsty and I want to see two characters smash. I'm not pretentious about it. I'm here to have fun and I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to read or write porn.

I write all sort of smut? I do love playing with power dynamics in sex scenes.

10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written?

The closest I've written is Comfort, a Solavellan vampire fic, which uses some BtVS lore? It's not crazy tho!

11. have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of!

12. have you ever had a fic translated?

Not that I know of either. I think I'd be a little apprehensive.

13. have you ever co-written a fic before?

nope. I'm not sure how i'd do that? writing feels like a solitary thing, even when asking for feedback and input.

The closest is a shared timeline/ideas where my OC interact with another person's OC and both of us wrote in the same continuity.

14. what's your all-time favourite ship?

hmmm. Once I've not written for and probably never will, Spike/Buffy.

if it's writing for, I'd say it's still Solavellan.

15. what's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I think if I want to finish it, I will? I have some old WIPs, but the reason I'm not finishing them is lack of want? Do or do not kinda thing I think.

16. what are your writing strengths?

I've told I've had good pacing. I think I write pretty good smut.

17. what are your writing weaknesses?

Descriptions? I tend to not want want to describe things. I'm also not great at moving characters through space - he went to the door, he looked out etc? I tend to slip into passive voice when writing characters moving around unless it's combat action or sex.

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

nope.

is perfectly valid.

A few short words like endearments - where the speaker would use a specific term in a different language than what's spoke is fine. Items that are specific and not translatable and would typically be borrowed words in a different language are fine too (kimono. computer. kayak)
