What I hate about societies perception about disabled people is that we’re viewed far less than people. If you hear about a child in the hospital it’s always oh their poor mother, oh their poor family. What about the kid, what about the poor kid who has to suffer every single day. Who is just expected to be stronger than what their body allows.
Or how disabled characters are in T.V shows. In T.V shows disability is either something to be overcome or something that dismisses a character all together. Because it’s never nice to dwell on the issue of disability. It’s never nice to think about real people in pain. That’s why I always felt like I had to fight through my pain. I felt like I was less than if I wasn’t capable. And that frame of mindset, through the past year, I’ve been wondering about. Why did I push myself through so much? Now I realize that mentality was not only reaffirmed but encouraged by those around me.
For those who don’t know, I used to play soccer, and in soccer, there is nothing worse than sitting on the bench. I was 9 when I started club soccer and for the first two years I spent every game on the bench and being therefore, taciturnly, though sometimes overtly told that I was less than. Well, that may have been because I was a bad player. But you know what gets you automatically put on the bench? Being unable to play. When you’re on the bench it means you’re not as good as the players on the field. When you’re disabled, or unable to do all the things that society expects of you, you’re viewed less than as well.
Moving on with my soccer story, I got hit in the head a lot. A lot a lot. I got hit down time and time again, in honestly, brutal ways, but every time I got back up, everyone would clap. And, a child glows under validation. So that’s what I would do, I’d get up again, no matter how hard of a hit I took.
And when the pain started coming every day, not just when I’d been hit, well, it was the same, I had to power through. And when my vision started  blurring and swaying so bad I couldn’t see the ball, I had to power through. And when the pain in my head hurt far worse than a broken arm, when it took everything, absolutely everything I had to not keel over or pass out, I had to power through. Because it my mind, it was better than being on the bench. It was far better than being viewed as less than, as cast aside, as worthless. Eventually, I finally capitulated soccer, but that same mentality caries into the rest of the world.
You have to get straight A’s or go to a good college or get a good job. And if you don’t get these things, if you can’t meet these standards, you’re on the bench, you’re less than. And I hate that, I hate that feeling. I don’t want to automatically feel inferior to everyone around me. I want to not have to white-knuckle it, to put every ounce of willpower into simply surviving only to be degraded. I’ve come to terms with my chronic illness, I guess I just haven’t come to terms with society.
TLDR I hate it here

No I’m ok, it’s just the way that Jesper is probably one of the first men that Inej has felt safe with since the menagerie and Inej is one of the only people who loves Jesper fully and unconditionally regardless of his faults and now they have to leave each other for separate goals that got me for a second there

Immediately forgets everything that happened in June. Uh. I threw a tea party! Finished a knit hat! Did one (1) queer corvid piece! Started playing baldurs gate! Read some good books! SAW SOME SANDHILL CRANES!!!! Found new enrichment in the form of a new walking route! A busy busy month! Didn't read as much as I intended, but I did get to check off five more books on my Reading Books I Own chart so I call that a win.
Tumblr media
The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakranorty ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐- WHAT A FUN BOOK! "Adventure" is the perfect word for this. Yes, it's a trilogy with only one book out, but this also works so well on its own, as individual books SHOULD! It's its own little thing. Wrapped up neat and tidy with little threads to pick up in the future. I had so much fun and the audiobook was a DELIGHT, I want to read it again immediately.
The Novice by Taran Matharu ⭐- This has been sitting on my shelf since its release. It moved homes with me. It will not be doing so again. Bland, generic, poorly written. Proof just because you were an internet success, doesn't mean you don't need an editor. Also proof that publishing is about Luck and Connections. I know goodreads ratings mean Nothing, but come on. Why is this one so high. Did people really enjoy it that much? HOW??
Translation State by Ann Leckie ⭐⭐⭐⭐- Okay. Look. This was not my favorite Leckie novel. In fact it very well could by me least favorite Leckie novel. HOWEVER. Even then, it was still fun and enjoyable. I wish it ended differently, but I still loved all the characters and how they interact. I do want to reread this as well, because I remember enjoying Ancillary Justice more the second time around and I wonder if the same will happen here.
Tumblr media
What Moves The Dead by T Kingfisher ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - A reread! To get ready for What Feasts At Night! Even knowing all the secrets, it's still a perfectly bite sized creepy read. My favorite thing about Kingfishers writing is how even with the darkest subjects she still manages to add humor. And it never seems out of place! It's a great breather for the reader but doesn't detract from the tension. Do not recommend reading this while walking through a field of bunnies.
What Feasts At Night by T Kingfisher ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I gave What Moves The Dead four stars at my initial read through, so I wonder if this will ALSO change to five stars upon rereading. I had to read the first few chapters twice for them to stick, and ended up switching to the audiobook which was very well done. I really didn't expect another book about Alex Easton, but I'm hooked now to be honest. I mean, stop putting this soldier in Situations, but also. I want to know what other Situations ka gets into. Angus and Miss Potter are adorable.
The library has a few summer reading games with prizes so my reading in the upcoming months will be influenced by those. Someone said there might even be a local bookstore gift package in the mix and I Want That. I do still want to do the Bone Season updated read, if for no other reason than to get rid of those books so I don't have to pack and move them. Other than that, no reading plans. I've read nearly every book that's on the shelf in my bedroom, which, wow, so it's getting harder to choose what to read. I guess that's a good thing! Leaves more room to reread old favorites.

Another wee language thing I find really interesting actually is Crozier's use of the word 'disturb' at the theatre with Sophia.
"Did that disturb you?"
He could have said "Did that frighten you?" or "Did that scare you?" but he didn't and there's something different there because of it.
'Disturb' carries different connotations. To be disturbed and to be frightened aren't exactly the same thing, and that matters, I think...?

Just watched the Shadow and Bone deleted scene with Inej and Jesper. I mean seriously, who made the decision to cut this scene from the show? What gave them the right to cut out 3 minutes of Jesper and Inej saying goodbye to each other in the most emotional way possible? Don’t even talk to me about what Inej says to Jesper:
“My parents might be my blood, but you, Jesper, are my family too.”
The hug between them was so sweet BUT THEN of course they had to break my heart by showing Jesper crying his eyes out. I think what made it so emotional for me was the fact that he kept it together for Inej, then completely broke down after she left, almost as if he was trying to stay strong for her so she wouldn’t feel bad about leaving. If that’s not true friendship, I don’t know what is.

I don't know if they'll ever do a spin-off at this point, nor if it was planned to also see the second part of Kaz's story after Jordie's death like in the book (after all, it would make sense there are missing pieces) but I would have liked to see Kaz grow up, become smarter and meaner, I would have liked to see his face when he discovers who the man who defrauded him is, I would have liked to see his first pair of gloves, his broken leg, his first stick. I would have liked to see his clothes gradually become more gangster-like and less provincial, I would have liked to see his clothes gradually become darker, I would have liked to see his hair become longer, more unkempt, like his brother's in the TV series and in a twist to see his disastrous haircut born, I would have liked to see the little r on his forearm (assuming it exists in the show and it makes sense to put it at this height already knowing what his surname is, his secret and what a brekker he made it up). I would have liked to see him in the transition from Kaz Rietveld, a lonely and desperate little orphan to the infamous dirty man. perhaps using the actor who did it as a child since he was very good and is growing up. we'll see if this will remain just a sweet dream or if it will become real... although I don't think so

Wild that people talked so much about the concept of All or Nothing as if Two Broke Girls wasn’t already there.

re; chuckles the clown
h i s t o r y
chuckles is not good, nor evil. he is the epitome of chaotic lawful. he does everything because he can because it's 'fun' & he takes the form of a colorful space clown.
personality-wise, chuckles is an agent of chaos, with his cartoonish antics often leading to both trouble & problems that he & the party have to face. but chuckles has always been the optimistic one of the group, if not a little too much so, making jokes & keeping morale high
he wears a bowtie, a magic bowler hat, clown shoes, & coat, all garish colors of red & teal. a flower is pinned on his lapel, & his bowler hat has an antennae attached to it. as far as i know, his appearance in space chuckles is where we get specifics as scene in pictures 1 & 3 under the cut.
chuckles started as an npc from a dnd campaign called 'once upon a witchlight,' then has popped up since then here & there but he was first featured as a full character in their christmas one-shot: "twas the night before witchlight". then later became the space chuckles from the stardust rhapsody campaign. i have yet to watch any of the campaigns in full but i instantly vibed with space chuckles from what i saw so i'm adding him before i finish watching them lol.
so ! as implied above, there are a few different versions of chuckles out there. technically the chuckles from once upon a witchlight is a different chuckles than the one from the stardust rhapsody campaign ( space chuckles ). but space chuckles will be the primary chuckles on the blog.
the other other version of him matches the one in the middle where chuckles the clown is a boss introduced in dark deception: unchecked limitations. he's described as a tall black humanoid in a yellow harlequin outfit with a two-lobe jester cap. he wears a black mask with glowing yellow eyes & a mouth. his limbs are long & stretchy & the yellow parts of his outfit, body, & mask glow. unlike the jesters, he has a black & white cape, a tail with a jagged point at the end, & a slightly different outfit. he also has white teeth. this second version of chuckles will have a separate verse from space chuckles.
there was also chuckles from the non-canon on a silver strand one-shot but as its non-canon i'll be ignoring that one.

really hoping I'll be able to do art again tomorrow, might be getting my wrist splints off. at the very least I'm getting staples removed which is nice
being stuck in bed for 3 weeks is it's own thing, relearning to walk will be another, but not being able to do anything besides social media and reading/sparsely writing is the worst 😕
