Conservatives and the police are so fucking insane, I’m not sure if this is an expression or if it’s literal. They’ve already been arresting and pinning 7 year olds down for nearly an hour for being autistic. I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually want to tear the ass cheeks off of children.

It has been one week since the hurricane hit and my body still doesn’t know I am safe. In mere hours, I lost power, cell coverage and WiFi. A day or two later I lost water. I had no way to talk to so many people I love and know if they were okay. It took three days for us to find someone I consider family.

There’s nothing like the horrors of seeing the town you call home be destroyed. I will always remember sitting at my window, feeling the RV I live in viciously shake from the wind and watching the tree behind my place lean in towards me. I am lucky not to lose my home and I will never forget the feeling of resigning myself to acceptance that this may be it.

I can’t express the stress and fear I would feel waiting to see my girlfriend to know if she was okay and the relief and tears I shed when I could finally hold her. I can’t forget the sound of my mother’s voice when I was finally able to call her and tell her “I am okay. I am safe. I am alive.”

It’s been one week and I am unable to sleep at night. My power, water, and cells service is back and I still find myself wide awake until 3 AM because I am wracked in fear. Those flooded houses, the downed trees, the condemned buildings, the chocolate milk rivers that replaced the highways, all these things you have seen pictures of, that is my home.

Yes, I am okay, safe, and alive. I consider myself lucky because I haven’t lost as much as my neighbors have. And, I am still so scared.

Carr's Hill Baptist Church: A Historic Landmark in Brevard, North Carolina

If you are south of Brevard, North Carolina, you can glimpse Carr’s Hill Baptist Church through the trees. The congregation began in 1882 as Dunn’s Rock Baptist Church, but they changed their name to honor the generosity of Carr Landreth, who donated the land to build the church in 1903.
