Part 2: This issue has existed since 1513, when Juan Ponce de Leon led one of the first white imperial expeditions of the land dubbed Florida by Spaniards (Florida Department of State). Considerably, Seminoles and other Southeastern Native American groups have a greater acceptance of transgender tribal members (Singer). The Spaniards brought their construct of the cisgender (not transgender) gender binary, forcing it, as part of cultural genocide, on the Native Americans who were not killed by [survived] their white man diseases, alcohol, and guns. Thence, the Native American populations dropped as more Spaniards, and then other Europeans, colonized Florida. White people became the dominant group in terms of power and population. With cisnormativity becoming the dominant ideology, cissexism on a wide-scale emerged in Florida. Cissexism became an issue in Brevard County when the first white colonizers settled here in 1564 (Adams). Then, transgender white people were more likely to be in the closet, and hate crimes were publicly accepted as a social control. Cissexism became more publicly addressed when social justice organizations created specific committees, led by transgender individuals, to more closely address anti-transgender oppression. Space Coast Pride (a local queer advocacy and support group) and Space Coast Parents and Friends of Lesbian and Gays (PFLAG) have pro-transgender committees. End of Part 2.
