As a standard the Movie Industry always makes the smart girl look frumpy or awkward...I hate that they categorize them differently from the ‘pretty’ girl. Think of Scooby Doo - why can’t Velma be seen as the pretty girl and why can’t Daphne be seen as smart?! Especially when the opposite is true for the men in that show! The ‘handsome’ Fred is considered smart while the frumpy Shaggy is seen as not smart. Hmm...something to think about... . I do my best to show my daughter that just because she’s seen as pretty or as a model doesn’t mean that she is not also smart. I make sure to give her every opportunity possible to learn, explore and exercise her knowledge. As you can imagine, I was elated when she came home and wanted to join the robotics club at school! How often do we back off of something that is uncomfortable, only to have something similar come up again at a later date, or even to have the thing we’re trying to escape be drawn out interminably?

 

The only way out is through. By going through something consciously, purposefully, willingly, we break the pattern, learn what we need to learn from the feelings, and more forward. We grow.

 The next time you are in an uncomfortable situation, ask yourself the following questions:

 

What about this makes me uncomfortable?

What is the fear?

What does it remind me of in my past?

What is different about this time?

What are all of my options?

What choice can I make this time that will be substantially different than the choices I have made in the past?

What is the worst thing that can happen here?

What is the best thing that can happen here?

Am I willing to experience something different this time?
