OLLIE'S FORGOTTEN TRANS FRIEND

Ollie was friends with a trans woman in high school.

In the story Clash Reunion('Tec #446-448) Ollie is trying to find old classesmates who are possible targets of assassination attempt. One of them is Billie Jean, Ollie knew her as William.

He didn't even know she was that close to him.

When he finally finds her, she walks away never to be seen again.

This is was released in 1985, and would have been an easy target of the CCA from the time. Only in 1989 the rules that were used to keep queer characters out of comics were removed.

I wanted to see more of this plot with Billie Jean.

These are my copies of The Transformers #17 (left) and #18 (right). You might notice two interesting difference between these two issues.

The first difference is that Transformers #17 does not have the comic book code authorities approval stamp whereas #18 does. The CCA was a self imposed censorship of comic books beginning in the 50s. However, the 80s saw multiple comics getting published without the stamp of approval including many issues of Transformers. In this case I assume the violent depictions of bots getting melted down was too much for the CCA.

The second difference is the bar code at the bottom. Comic books with barcodes were sold at general retailers like newsstands convenience stores and supermarkets. Comics without barcodes were direct market copies and were sold in specialty comic shops. So my issue of #18 was sold in a newsstand while my issue of #17 was sold in a comic book shop. Also, depending on the title and the year newsstand copies of comics are considered more rare. Although, I uhh don’t think these two issues are highly sought after lmao.
