For the end of year I’d like to feature a drink I’m particularly proud of, as I made it for a fan anthology called Shots of Gold! A Haikyu Bartending fanzine.  A fresh, sweet twist on a a international classic, the Capirinha, perfectly suited for Haikyuu’s protagonist Hinata Shoyo as he enters the professional volleyball world. Here, I feature one of four recipes I contributed to the book, as printed and as presented. 

Ninja Caipirinha | ABV: 32%  | Yield: 2.80 fl oz | International Classic, Built In Glass, Fandom Cocktails

Caipirinha is arguably the most famous drink of Brazil. Using Cachaça, a funky liquor blending spirits made of sugar cane juice and sometimes other spirits. Training and playing in such a hot climate as Rio de Janeiro, internationally-acclaimed volleyball player Hinata Shoyo, better known to some fans as “Ninja” picked up a taste for them – and he’s particularly fond of this mandarin-hued twist on this basic yet iconic drink.

Ingredients

One half small mandarin or tangerine, cut into quarters

0.5 fl oz or 15ml lime juice 

2-3 teaspoons demerara, turbinado, or raw cane sugar* 

2 fl oz or 60ml Cachaça (Preferably Leblon or Novo Fogo, but there are hundreds – explore what’s available local to you! There’s no wrong Cachaça for a Caipirinha.)

In the rocks glass you serve it in, muddle the mandarin, lime juice, and sugar. To muddle, press a wooden or plastic muddler, or if you don’t have one, the  thick end of a heavy spoon, firmly to release the oils in the peels. Then, add Cachaça to the glass, and finish with either cubed or crushed ice. Stir. 

The perfect drink after a long day, whether you’ve been playing on the court or the beach.  

*If necessary, you can substitute about 0.3-0.5 fl oz[10-15ml] of simple syrup.

You, Patri and Clau were inseparable. You all played for Barcelona. And there was never one without the other two. At least that's what Alexia always said.

Over the summer you spent in Ibiza something changed though. You and Patri started sharing looks that were no longer just friendly.

Maybe it happened when she couldn't tear her eyes away from you, in your brazilian bikini, that left little to the imagination.

Maybe it happened when you couldn't stop staring at her coming out of the ocean, water droplets running down her abs.

The heat must've been messing with your heads.

Between topless tanning and icy cocktails, you two stole glances of each other.

At then one night after too many drinks it just happened.

Claudia had left you two to alone sharing a room and it was all it took.

After that, every other chance you guys had, you slept together again.

Even after getting back home.

Maybe it was just you, but it seemed like that thing that had started as just sex, was becoming more.

But yeah, it really was just you.

When you saw her making out with someone else at a party, you instantly felt your heart break.

"I'm so sorry Y/N!" - You felt a hand on your shoulder.

"What are you talking about Clau?" - trying to keep your feelings from showing in your face.

"Don't do this. I know about you two. You thought I wouldn't notice? You guys hanging out without me? Staying on the phone with each other all day? Giving each other rides in the morning to training? I'm not stupid!

But I am really sorry she's cheating on you."

Little did you know.

While you'd spend your days swooning over Patri, Claudia spend her days swooning over you.

"She's not cheating. We were never together."

"But your sad! I can see it."

"I have no right to be. I was the one who read the situation wrong." - you said it so low, only Clau was able to her.

"Yes, you do. That was horrible of her. You don't deserve this!

You know what? I have an idea." -

Clau was in dangerous territory. She knew her friend, and so did you. Patri was flirty to any pretty girl she saw.

She couldn't resist the idea of having the attention of others. It made her feel good. Divine even.

But if there's something she'd never tolerate was loosing. Not just inside the pitch.

"Let's go have some fun! Okay? Forget about her! Come let's dance!" - as she dragged you to the middle of the dance floor, and you couldn't say no. You needed to get your head away from the situation.

Into the night you both went, when she noticed Patri across the room, staring daggers at you two, that's when she decide to go ahead with her plan.

"You trust me right?" - She asked with a very serious face.

"Of course I-"

And you were suddenly cut off by her lips on yours.

And you let her.

You didn't know if it was because of the jealousy you felt, that deep down just wanted to hurt Patri back.

Or if it was because it actually felt nice to be kissed by someone who actually meant it.

When you two pulled away from the kiss, all she said was

"Now the two of you are even."

"Claudia!" - instantly hitting her arm playfully and laughing at her comment.

"What? I'm just being a good friend!"

She wasn't.

But you didn't have to know that. She wasn't about to tell you she did it mostly out of selfishness.

You didn't need to know there was any feelings involved. That's not what you needed right now.

She just wanted to deal with that part another day.

Part two

"Princesa, do you want another drink?" Neymar asks you, noticing the glass in your hand is empty. "Please," you hand him the glass with a smile.

Your attention goes back to Melissa and Fayza, Melissa was telling you a story about her recent trip. From time to time, you turned your attention to the dance floor, Kylian was dancing with Bruna, she's trying to teach him some Brazilian dance.

You can't help but smile, dizzying off from the conversation with the two women.

The party was something Kylian wanted to do, not being a very party guy himself, he asked you to help him plan it. And if you were honest, you did an amazing job, all his teammates and their partners were there, his parents, his brothers and close friends too.

"I mean, that's good for me. What about you, y/n?" Melissa asks you. You turned back to her a little embarrassed because you have no idea what they're talking about. "Yes," you say, trying to save the talk.

Fayza can't help but laugh while Melissa just looks at you with a funny expression. "You have no idea what we're talking about," she says as she joins Kylians mother. "Sorry, I zoned out." The blush on your face only grows.

"Melissa was talking about meeting for breakfast tomorrow, just us and Lana," Fayza tells you. You smile really hard, loving how they always involve you in every activity they do. "I'll love to. Let's have brunch at the cute cafe we visited last time, " you suggested happily.

"Princesa, your drink, extra special for my good friend," ney interrupt the conversation handing your drink to you. "Miss Lamari, Melissa, would you like something else to drink?" He offered happy. Ney decided to be the bartender helper since he couldn't really dance because of his injury.

They thank him and accept the offer, ney goes back to the bar to prepare the drinks. "I was thinking," you say, pausing to drink a little of the cocktail. "Ky asked me to start planning the wedding, he wants to have a summer wedding and I want to ask you to help me."

The thought of your wedding with him makes you excited. Since he proposed back before the World Cup, you started saving ideas for dresses, venue ideas, and daydreaming of what everything was going to look like.

Fayza moves closer to hug you, excited at the idea of you finally joining the family as her sons wife. She helped Kylian with the proposal, helped him pick the ring, and practice his speech. She was the most welcoming woman on earth. Since day one, she was arms open to you, knowing as soon as she met you, you were there for the long run. She wasn't wrong.

"I can't believe it's been a few months since that, you know I love you like a sister, count with me on anything."

When you moved to Paris, you didn't expect to find love and a family that loved you and protect you. Not expecting any of that to go so well as it's going.

"Thank you, both of you"

You hug them easily as you were in the middle of them. Ethan walked close to the scene and asks what's going on.

"What's going on is that Melissa wants to dance, and you're taking her," you say, watching Melissa roll her eyes at you but accept dancing with her little brother in law.

Verrati and Marquinhos saw this and decided to invite you and Fayza to dance, accepting the offer you move to the dance floor. Some Brazilian music is playing, probably a request from one of the team guys. Loving to see Ney and Marquinhos break the dance floor with their moves, tonight only being Marquinhos.

Kylian saw that you and Marco were dancing and smiled. He was happy to have you, happy to see how you blend amazingly into his world, not thinking of anyone more than you to do it.

"Go, Kylian!" Bruna yelled as he got the steps correctly this time, after what it seemed like a whole night trying. "Go, Kyky. Go, Kyky. " Sergio and Pilar cheer for him. Antonella and Leo are trying to imitate the dance as bruna directs the whole choreography.

You took Ethans hand, dancing a little bit with him while Melissa and Marco dance together, Marcos wife lost at the bar laughing with Neymar. Everybody's having fun. Everybody's relaxing, forgetting about their worries for a moment.

After a good time on the dance floor, Fayza and you go back to your seats. You are tired from the workout you did in the morning, cursing yourself for it. After a few songs, Melissa frees herself from Marco, handing him to Bruna, and she accepts excited to teach more dance moves. It was her night, and nobody denied it. We just accepted it.

Kylian left the dance floor when his eyes and yours made contact, walking your way, you open your arms for him to get into them, embracing you while you kiss his cheek. "You did it amazing, amour. Such a dancer, " you smiled, pulling away from him,

You both laugh, and he takes a seat next to you and in the middle of Melissa and his mom. "Maman," he yells, a little more drunk than usual, something is not common in him, but tonight you're happy he's letting go, knowing he needs that "Je vais me marier." (I'm getting married) Fayza, and you let out a laugh. Finding adorable the way he's so excited about it.

"I know, my love. I can't be happier for you, " she says, caressing his cheek as a love sign. She has the same thoughts as you, Kylian has a very pressured life, so it's good for him to let go and enjoy his youth.

Kylian recliners himself into you, his head into your shoulder, giving him access to your cheeks and neck, something he didn't take for granted, kissing you cheek multiple times. "Ky, stop," you pull away a little, not wanting him to start something he's not supposed to. Not in front of his mother.

"Tu n'aimes pas que je t'embrasse?" (You don't want to kiss me?) His expression turns into a hurt one, "Chérie, s'il vous plaît" (honey, please) he tries to kiss your cheeks again, but you move your face, making him pout harder this time "You weren't denying my kisses this morning while I was inside of you." You move your hand to his mouth, stopping him to finish his sentence. Melissa can't help but let out a loud laugh, Fayza laughs with her while shaking her head. "Amour, be quiet, please."

He takes his hand into yours and moves it, freeing his mouth. "Est-ce que je te fais de l'effet?" (Do I make you feel good?) He whispers into your ear.

You can't help the blush that creeps into your face. "Ky, be quiet," you whisper to his ear. "Why? maman sait ce qu’on fait" (mom knows what we're doing). With every single word of him, you can feel your face turn more red. Thankfully, the color of the lights helps you.

"Maman, elle m’a fait me sentir si bien ce matin" (mom, she made me feel so good this morning) kylian tells his mother, laughing casually, not caring a single bit about the meaning of his words. "Et peut être que je vais te faire sentir bien, ce soir" (And, baby, Ima make you feel so good, tonight) You try to hush him again, but his hands on yours difficult you the work.

"Oh Chérie, you're so drunk right now, " Fayza, who is enjoying the moment, knowing damn well she'll use it to mess with him later, tries to shush him. Melissa, on the other hand, is enjoying everything, not caring to make him stop but decide to help you. "Kyks, come with me, I want another drink," she says while taking his hands and pulling him off of you.

You stay there, ashamed that Kylian says that in front of his mother, deciding to drink your cocktail, looking at everything but the eyes of your future mother in law. "Y/n, Chérie, don't worry." She says, feeling your discomfort and laughing at how embarrassed you were. "But I have the feeling I know now why you wanted a brunch and not an early breakfast," she joked with you, which makes you laugh, you love the way she always makes sure you're comfortable.

You can't deny that even though you feel embarrassed, you lived for these moments. Yes, it was something you were going to be mocked about for a long time, but hey, it's the memories that count.

Real Madrid and Barcelona’s rivalry often became physical on the field. However off field, they often tried to keep their peace. Vinicius just wanted to be peaceful with any rivals off the field, mainly due to not wanting to be fouled over and over again on the field.

He tried really hard. He truly does.

But having the most gorgeous girlfriend all dressed up at some event while a certain youngster keep ogling you, it didn’t help.

You excused yourself to go get a drink at the bar while Vinicius was talking with Eder, Rodrygo, and Raphinha. You were ordering a cocktail when you felt someone appear behind you.

“Whats a lady like you doing here alone?”

You turn around and make eye contact with the Spanish midfielder. Pablo Gavira. Probably your boyfriend’s biggest rival. He stood next to you as you watch the bartender make your cocktail.

“Getting a drink.” You mumble

“Alone?” He asks with a raised eyebrow and a smirk. “Where’s that boyfriend of yours? Shouldn’t he be accompanying his gorgeous girlfriend? That’s not being a good boyfriend, is it?”

It took everything in you to not lash out on him. He was starting to get on your nerves. His smirk, his words, his sudden closeness to you. Everything was annoying you. However, you weren’t one to lash out or be openly rude to someone so you stayed silent.

“Cat got your tongue, huh-“

“Leave her alone.” Both you and Pablo look up and see a very jealous and angry Vinicius in front of you. Thankfully, the bartender set your drink down on the counter so you quickly grab it and take a step closer to the Brazilian.

The Spanish player holds his hands up in defense as he lets out a taunting chuckle. “I was just joking, no need to get all riled up. I understand though, pretty girl you have.” He says as his lips curl into a smirk.

Vinícius scoffs, taking a step closer to him. “You’re sick. Stay away from her.” You watch the two cautiously. From the corner of you eye you can see Rodrygo and Raphinha watching. They were both contemplating on what to do.

You attention went back on the two men in front of you.

“Or what?” Pablo asks.

You swore you could’ve seen stan coming from Vinicius ears from how angry he seemed. You quickly grab his arm and tug him towards you. “Let’s go, amor. Não desperdice sua energia com alguém tão desesperado por atenção que quer flertar com a namorada de seu rival.” [Don't waste your energy on someone so desperate for attention that they want to flirt with the girlfriend of their rival. ]

Pablo’s eyes furrowed in confusion from the sudden language shift. You gave him a glare as you drag Vinicius away. You were leading him back to your table and he kept rambling under his breath. “Você pode acreditar nele? Ele teve a audácia para a minha garota?” [Can you believe him? He had the audacity to talk to my girl?] He angrily mumbles.

You couldn’t help but let out a chuckle as you to say down. Your boyfriend looked at you in confusion. “Why are you laughing?”

“No reason,” You reply with a shrug, “I like it when you get protective and jealous.”

He raises his eyebrow and leans in close to you, “You do?”

You nod in response, a smile adorning your glossed lips. “I do. You look attractive.”

“Can’t help it. Você é minha, minha garota.” [you’re mine, my girl] Vinicius smiles, reaching over to gently cup your cheek. He knew Pablo was watching and he couldn’t help but feel cocky at the whole situation. After all, he has the girl.

You lean in, and before you pressed a kiss against his lips, you whisper, “Always and forever yours, meu amor.”

Brazilian-Style Lemonade !

Ingredients:

4 unwaxed limes, plus extra slices to serve

150g condensed milk (see Tips)

15 mint leaves, plus extra to serve

Juice 1 lemon

Ice to serve

Method:

Top and tail the limes, then cut each one into 8 wedges. Transfer to a blender with the condensed milk, mint leaves and 1.2 litres water. Pulse about 5 times until the limes have broken down but aren’t fully blended (the longer you blend, the more bitter the drink will taste). Stir in the lemon juice, then set aside for 30 minutes to infuse.

Pour the mixture through a fine sieve into a large jug. To serve, bash some extra mint leaves, then put in a glass with slices of lime and plenty of ice. Pour in the lemonade.

The Suzano massacre, also known as the Suzano school massacre, was a school shooting and a failed bombing, that took place on March 13, 2019, at the Professor Raul Brasil State School in the Brazilian municipality of Suzano, São Paulo State, The perpetrators, 17-year-old Guilherme Taucci Monteiro and 25-year-old Luiz Henrique de Castro, murdered five students and two school staff members, Before the attack in a car shop near the school, the pair also killed Monteiro's uncle. After killing most of their victims in the school, Monteiro killed his partner and then committed suicide. Eleven additional people were injured by gunshots, and gunfire was also exchanged with the police. Some were injured while trying to escape. The attack was the second major and second deadliest school shooting in Brazil, after the Realengo massacre in 2011. It is also the ninth fatal school shooting in Brazilian history. The shooting has inspired many copycat killings in and outside of Brazil.

Earlier in the day, at around 9 a.m. local time, the gunmen shot three times and killed Monteiro's uncle, the shopkeeper Jorge Antônio Moraes, in a nearby car shop. The man was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries, dying hours later. According to the investigation, Castro was planning on killing a neighbor of his that was an electrician because they had had a misunderstanding months before. They had a pact, in which each one would kill someone before the school massacre. An hour and half before the school attack, Castro went to his neighbor's house. Finding the gate closed, he persistently called him out, but the man did not answer, and so Luiz went away. In the same day, one of the killers posted a series of photos in a social media platform, where he appeared with a skull mask, holding the firearm he would later use and doing a gun sign with his hand against his head. The two attackers then drove to the school in a white Chevrolet Onix that Castro had legally rented at Localiza. The crime occurred at around 9:40 a.m. local time on a Wednesday, March 13, 2019, in the Professor Rual Brasil State School, in Suzano, Greater São Paulo. Guilherme Taucci Monteiro, 17 years old, and Luiz Henrique de Castro, 25 years old, entered the building hooded, with combat boots and balaclavas with skulls. Monteiro entered the building first. He then turned around and began shooting at two school staff members as well as several students at a distance of approximately 3 feet (0.91 m) in front of him, before entering the main patio in search of more potential victims. He disappeared from camera and then moved on to the institution's linguistics center. By this time, Castro appeared on camera entering the building in a hurry while holding several weapons, including a bow which he eventually left on the floor. He approached the corpses lying on the ground and struck them with a hatchet. Fleeing students started to run from the patio towards the school entrance hall. On the way, they encountered Castro, who was still in the entrance hall. Other students who had hidden themselves when they first heard gunshots were able to avoid being shot. Five students between 15 and 17 years old and two school staff members were killed. According to the 2017 School Census, the institution had 358 students between 6th and 9th grade (middle school and freshman year) and 693 students in secondary school. The school was locked down by police, who searched it and found a caliber 38 revolver, speedloaders, a crossbow, a traditional bow and arrow, possible Molotov cocktails, a hatchet and a wired bag. A bomb squad was dispatched to the scene and found that it was a fake explosive.

Caipirinha is Brazil's national cocktail, made with cachaça (sugarcane hard liquor), sugar, and lime. The drink is prepared by mixing the fruit and the sugar together, then adding the liquor. This can be made in a single large glass to be shared among people, or in a larger jar, from which it is served in individual glasses. Although the origin of the drink is unknown, one account says it came about around 1918 in the region of Alentejo in Portugal, with a popular recipe made with lemon, garlic, and honey, indicated for patients with the Spanish flu. Another account is that Caipirinha is based on Poncha, an alcoholic drink from Madeira, Portugal. The main ingredient is aguardente de cana, which is made from sugar cane. Sugar cane production switched from Madeira to Brazil by the Portuguese as they needed more land to plant it on. Before this people in Madeira had already created aguardente de cana, which was the ancestor to cachaça. The word caipirinha is the diminutive of the word caipira, which in Brazilian Portuguese refers to someone from the countryside (specifically, someone from the rural parts of south-central Brazil). • Urahara definitely has sensitive skin, 15 minutes in on the sun and he's red, crying and wanting to go home, plus pouting and throwing a scene about how he hates the beach, the others have to calm him down and stop his drama king ass with food he likes

• Yoruichi LOVES beach volleyball, my girl would bring professional level stuff and drag EVERYONE to play with her, so what if you're weaker and she could kill you? It's FUN! Also she rubs her victory at everyone and is a sore loser in case she loses even if slightly

• Ururu likes to look for sea shells, she brings them to Kisuke which tells her facts about it, she has a tiny notebook with what he says and pictures of the shells

• Tessai LOVES to dive and swim in the sea, also probably be a fan of surfing, he swims till the deep parts with Jinta on his back and they explore together anything they find and play in the water

• Tessai and Yoruichi can EASILY get a beautiful and perfect tan, Kisuke gets jealous and sulks in the corner while he needs to apply a ton of lotion and body creams to help ease his burning everywhere despite using UV shirts, sunscreen, hat and everything to protect himself from the sun, AND if you dare comment on him being white as a ghost during a beach trip, he'll stare at you and throw a show about how it's unfair that Tessai and Yoruichi get all good genes and tans while he burns and gets alone in pain of the sun

• Okay which drinks I think everyone would enjoy drinking:

Urahara: he'd be into a Brazilian drink called "caipirinha" it's a drink made out of "cachaça", ice, sugar and the fruit , normally lime. I think he'd like these because they are super sweet yet full of flavor, cold and refreshing and 2 drinks in and you can be drunk, plus I think he'd like the lime flavor but would be curious for other fruits like red berries or pineapple or watermelon

Ururu: Ramune, I think Ururu would like to drink it since it's convenient, pretty, refreshing and she'd have fun opening it, though I think Jinta would break the bottle to get the glass peeble out and mock her with it '-'

Tessai: he'd be into coconut water, it's sweet, refreshing, big, the only downside is that it would be expensive in Japan considering the price of fruit there

Yoruichi: calpis soda edition, I view that Yoruichi doesn't like drinking and has a low alcohol tolerance, so in a beach trip she'd enjoy a yogurt, milk based drink, simple, nice and doesn't leave her drunk

Jinta: watermelon juice, and he'd like it WITH SEEDS.

• Jinta likes to play with water balloons to scare everyone off their area, Kisuke has to ground him later because angry parents came

• Kisuke lives under the AC and if it breaks he'll make hell on earth till Tessai fixes it

• Kisuke has to take at least 5 books and 30 sudoku magazines extra difficult, he finishes the sudoku in 10 minutes and the books in 5 hours, whines asking to go home and Yoruichi has to calm him down with kisses or a cat nap (her in kitty form in his lap for a hour)

• They take pictures to add to a family vacation album

• After burnt in the first hour, Kisuke gets called the "Lobster King" and gets salty

• Ururu is a big fan of fruit salad for the beach vacation, her normal mix is Yakut, strawberry, apple, pineapple, green and purple grapes, yogurt, honey and bananas

• Sunset beach walk in group go brrrrr

• Ururu and Urahara making flower crowns for everyone

• Jinta and Tessai building sand castles

• Kitty Yoruichi exploring the beach and picking random items

• Urahara and Yoruichi definitely enjoy having some private time alone while everyone is out when the sun is setting, I'm talking cocktails, acoustic beach music, watching the sea and enjoying each other's company
