okay look, calming down - i understand why some people would want zelda to be a protagonist in like a totk-style 3d zelda. that would be great! the reason i predicted 2d for playable zelda is because its a smaller gamble for nintendo - imo, its realistically what we could get. especially at the end of the switch' life cycle AND so soon after totk.

BUT i'm very happy, for a few reasons:

1. it IS mainline zelda. its not called "triforce heroes" or "tingle's rosy rupeeland", its not a peach-style spinoff or side game. its a real zelda game. its called THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: ECHOES OF WISDOM. that alone, giving the mainline zelda brand prestige to this, IS a risk. and its one i super appreciate nintendo taking!!!

2. i disagree that just because it has the links awakening toy-style aesthetic, that automatically makes it a "lesser" or unserious game. links awakening IS a good game! its some peoples favorite! it added interesting lore to the zelda series, its a canon part of the timeline, its mechanically fun, and it has the fun psychological element of analyzing it in terms of links feelings about the dream. like how even the boss monsters are fearful of "dying", begging link not to destroy the island. which of course isn't "real" since its a dream, but its interesting that link would THINK that. also, marin 💔

3. like i said in the prediction post, this could be understood as a testfire for the concept. IF its as successful as any other 2d zelda game (and thats a big if! i already see people calling it more niche or for babies. i hope that doesnt catch on too much and depress hype 😞), maybe nintendo WILL see it as less of a gamble to make zelda the protagonist in a full-on, "serious" 3d title. nintendo is, after all, a business. trying it out with a smaller game makes total sense.

also... it looks like a good game? when a link between worlds was released, everyone thought the wall merging ability was brilliant and a great way to turn 2d zelda into a more unique experience.

this, to me, looks to have similar potential!! the fact that zelda can essentially order enemies to fight for her and use her environment to think of intelligent solutions to any problem is very in-character! it's fitting both for a princess and for the bearer of the triforce of wisdom.

also, its not just building/environment traversal! she does fight!

Adding to that. Could you also explain Swarm and Azure? What species are they? Why were they imprisoned?

What was the Flux?

The Flux was a wave of anti-matter unleashed by the Division with one goal: to obliterate the entire universe and eliminate one specific target—the Doctor. The Division had decided, in their infinite wisdom, that if they couldn't control the Doctor, it would be better to wipe out everything and start fresh in a brand-new universe. This is a bit like deciding to burn down your entire house because you don't like the curtains, but hey, ho.

⚛️ How It Worked

The Flux was like a giant hurricane made of antimatter, or perhaps more realistically the biggest bomb of antimatter ever created, similar to Davros' Reality Bomb. Every particle it touched was ripped apart or destabilised - as it tore through the universe, it indiscriminately wrecked everything in its path, creating pure chaos in a universe of reason.

1️⃣ The First Flux

The First Flux event wiped out a lot of the universe, leaving Earth at the centre of a battlefield. The Daleks, Cybermen, and Sontarans all fought for control of the remaining fragments of existence, leading to intergalactic war. The First Flux also damaged the Temple of Atropos, causing a temporal chaos known as the Great Disruption to accompany all this.

2️⃣ The Second Flux

The Division planned a Second (and Final) Flux, intending to finish what they had started and bring the universe to its ultimate end, but the Doctor managed to prevent it from completely destroying the Universe by using some old forbidden Dark Time tech and a bit of bants. Unfortunately, the Doctor couldn't bring back what the Flux had already destroyed, leaving large swathes of reality forever erased from existence.

🌠 The Aftermath

Entire galaxies, civilisations, and histories were wiped out, leaving a much less interesting universe to explore. Even now in newer incarnations, the Doctor really isn't over it. He rationalises that because the Division targeted him specifically, the entire tragedy of the Flux was entirely his fault. But that kid's always been dramatic.

Who are Swarm and Azure?

Swarm and Azure were members of an ancient species known as Ravagers who lived in the Dark Times of the universe, and worshipped the eternal embodiment of Time.

They first got a bit uppity when the ancient Time Lords decided to make the Universe a more organised and less dangerous place, which involved the imprisonment of the personification of Time and some Mouri gal pals in the Temple of Atropos. The Ravagers obviously saw this as heresy.

⛓️ Imprisonment

The Ravagers' dislike of the Time Lords' actions led to a fight known as the Founding Conflict. During this, Swarm and Azure were involved in what's become known as the Seige of Atropos, where they took control of the Temple of Atropos and all the Mouri within it, whom the Time Lords had so carefully placed. The Doctor, then part of the Division, defeated them.

Following their defeat, the Division deemed that Swarm and Azure were too dangerous to be left to their own devices. Swarm was imprisoned in a containment chamber at the Burnished Rage battleground, while Azure was hidden on Earth, her identity erased, and her true nature suppressed under a human guise. Why be simple when a more convoluted solution would do?

🏃‍♂️ Escape and the Flux

Thanks to the head of the Division and part-time evil adoptive mother, Tecteun, Swarm escaped and then liberated his sister. They then decided that instead of the Division using the Flux to wipe out the Universe, they would use the Flux to wipe out the Universe, because religion makes that totally different. This all, of course, failed, and the very person they'd been worshipping for so long killed them both for their 'failure'.

Here are some of my study tips to help you maintain your stamina and focus:

When in doubt, make everything into an itemized list (topics, timelines, organizing by subtopic, key facts/people/dates surrounding a significant event, concept, theory, or ideology, cause and effect, problem and solution, etc.)

Use real-life analogies and applications as often as possible to retain information (e.g. to remember acronyms, propositions through the "box" metaphor, etc.)

Reframe long-winded information into an ongoing narrative. Humans are better at retelling stories than retaining/regurgitating a laundry list of facts or statistics

Organize your study sessions to each focus on one main topic, concept, or chapter

Create a timeline for all your assignments. Plan in advance to work on projects in milestones rather than all at once

Utilize time-blocking to pace yourself through the information (e.g. devote 30 minutes to one task or an hour to studying a specific concept; take a fully unplugged break before resuming work or another study session). Use a countdown timer if you think it would be helpful for you – everyone is different

Prioritize rest, even if it sounds counterintuitive at first. You're most productive and focused when your mind is well-rested enough to achieve and maintain peak performance. Create an independent and complete original script

As one of the producers and producers of the show, Chunyu Film and Television has been involved in this project for more than two years. Bearing a blood feud, he returned to the capital ten years later under the pseudonym Zanghai. With the help of the construction techniques and manipulation techniques he has learned for many years , all the way to wisdom and treachery, and finally the injustice was avenged.

This is a period drama with revenge as the main line. The character of the male protagonist Zanghai is a contradictory and complex complex. On the surface, he is calm and calm, proficient in the art of manipulation, good at scheming people's hearts, and sworn in with his enemies; but deep down, he has not given up the pursuit of justice and truth, and has never lost his good nature.

Elu is hesitant in new things but tries to keep an open mind. It’s difficult to adjust because she is unsure of what would happen if she tries something new and it might end up a bad experience. Not to mention growing up in an isolated village doesn’t give her enough exposure to foreign cultures.

Locals in her homeland know her to be a strong-willed girl who can be brutally honest because she intends to fix the problem right away, she believes that sugar-coating would delay the solution and make it worse. Though she does feel a little bad if someone cries from her criticism.

Being a beastman, she is very agile with a keen sense of smell as well as strength that surpasses humans. She often goes out hunting with the older members of the group and she displays full cooperation with other teammates.

But another thing to note is that she is a black bear beastman, her temperament is calm but she has a thin patience and she will growl or roar in anger. Despite being so small, she has incredible physical strength.

One thing she dislikes is when the team is unstable and problematic, she would quickly abandon that group and do the job herself or find another that’s got their heads together. She’d rather have the task done quickly and efficiently with no side tracking.

Unfortunately, this gives off the impression that she’s cold and unsociable which is far from the truth. She just needs to tone down a little bit.

Elu is actually mature and gives advice for those who can’t look after themselves. She enjoys the simple things in life and can have her moments where she spouts words of wisdom that makes others think she’s a wise, old sage.

Family History

She grew up in a village where the locals rarely or never interact with outsiders. They aren’t against having outsiders visit but it was clear they don’t know how to handle interacting with people living different lifestyles.

The villagers are all beastmen who are mostly of the bear genus, though there are some who are deer and raccoon. Everyone knows each other and treat each other as if they were all family. Which means they don’t stand idly by if one of them gets hurt.

But they’ve been especially wary of outsiders after a group of shady businessmen started causing problems for them. Some of their people were imprisoned and branded as the bad guys when they retaliated.

They know nothing about the modern laws of the urban society and are pressured to take deals that would only benefit the other party. Thankfully, her father was a firm man and kept refusing them every time. But it won’t be long until they use every influence they have to chase them out of their home.

Elu is upset by these people and how they seem to be driven by their greed. It doesn’t help that they would disrupt the environment with their logging and illegal dumping.

Unlike city folk, life in her village was simple yet satisfying. They take what they need from the forest while also respecting the cycle of life. They don’t hunt out of vanity or pride. The males usually do the hunting but there have been women who are capable enough to hunt alongside them.

Due to Elu’s elder brother being born with weak body, she has taken the task of hunting for food and foraging. She has been taught knowledge on how to traverse the land and recognize edible and non-edible plants from her father.

Childhood Memories

Elu has a fond memory of her father protecting her from a bison that wandered too close, her father struggled but he overpowered the animal and sent it away from their borders. His tall stature and rough features may have come off as intimidating to others but to Elu he was her hero.

She wanted to be like him so she does everything she can to make him proud. Even courageously taking the chance to leave home to attend DCA in order to help their village.

There was an unpleasant memory where she was told to stay in the house by her father but she got curious and peeked to see these formally dressed businessmen. Whatever they said made her father mad, he eventually sent them away.

But what happened after that was scarred into her memory, a couple of houses in her village were suddenly set ablaze, her brother nearly losing his life when he was trapped in the rubble.

She smelled the source of the fire when the businessmen returned, they smelled like gasoline, when she cried out that they were the culprits. They mocked her by asking if they even have any solid evidence as well as a lawyer, implying that her village wouldn’t win because they have the money and power to make it their victory.

Elu’s rage from what the businessmen said made her determined to focus for the benefit of her village but this in turn made her closed off to outsiders. Afraid they would be like the businessmen, lying through their teeth.

Like Jinlong, she has trouble adjusting to the school life due to the culture shock. So, she often keeps to herself while occasionally asking the professors for advice when Elu feels like there was no other option. Which is the reason why she struggled a lot at first.

Not to mention, she doesn’t understand the concept of idol concerts and what the purpose of this was. She isn’t familiar with the pop songs or rock, she was more of a traditionalist but she felt like not many people would be interested in that.

She was at a loss for what she was doing and if she was even trying hard enough. Until Perrine approached her and made Elu comfortable enough to finally figure out how to get used to the school environment and subjects enough to guarantee her that she won’t need to drop out of school.

Putting her inventing skills to use, she does a lot of favors in exchange for what she needs, be it some notes or tutoring. In time, she got better and has gained a reputation for herself in school. Elu thinks that it’s only a small group but in reality she helped a lot of people and they admire her a lot.

Her grades are fairly decent but it was clear that she started to improve the more she managed to understand the foreign subjects. Not among the top students but still high around the B grade.

An excellent archery shooter who can shoot with high accuracy even when on horseback. She is known to even shoot arrows through ring holes as small as a pinky finger.

School Relationships

Elu mostly kept to herself and her “strictly business” attitude made it difficult for idle chit chat. It wasn’t until she was forced to seek out the help of other students that she learns to communicate more.

Even though she was still a bit professional, she at least made progress. She’s learned to try out new things little by little and learn more about new topics.

Perrine was the first to approach her and wasn’t thrown off by Elu’s reluctance. She managed to win her over just a bit with food because who doesn’t? Plus, it would help the girl relax a little and feel welcome.

Rozeline and Elu started off as acquaintances who exchanged information of interest until they became close enough to consider each other as friends in a way. Elu figured she could gain knowledge she needed from Rozeline and in turn can hope to put her issues in the urban public.

Elu found Rozeline’s inventions innovative and would take notes from her, but she’s sure to also provide her own feedback on how to make it eco-friendly while still efficient.

Jinlong was an enigma to Elu, she has never seen other beastmen let alone something like a dragonkin like Jinlong. So, she is both intrigued but also intimidated. When she got to know Jinlong by chance, she began to admire her. Their goals were different but they both relate to feeling out of place, but unlike Elu who was hesitant at first, Jinlong pushed through and got to her position.

Skilli sees Elu as this lost bear cub who is figuring out the right path, but with so many things she doesn’t know, finding the right path seems impossible. Skilli’s form is from Elu’s desire to find the way to settle her problems that won’t end in turmoil.

Skilli shares her knowledge to Elu as well as guide her to opening her eyes to new things she won’t find from the comforts of her home. Skilli teaches her how to cherish those differences in order to understand the world better. The fairy is the wisest and the most patient out of all the dorm fairies.

Matelot

She is a woodpecker and acts as Elu’s scout, always on the lookout for anything of interest from the treetops. Matelot often marks using symbols that Elu recognizes, she even knows Morse code.

Matelot is very quiet and likes to hide her presence, often scaring people and other animals when she starts pecking away. An animal of very little words, she talks softly into people’s ears before leaving the conversation.

Tala

She is a gypsy vanner horse with a calm temperament. No matter what chaos goes on in the background she just goes, “Oh, the usual?” then does her own thing. But when it’s an emergency, she can go from calm to serious when needed.

Elu often rides on her back to drive away approaching danger. Tala is also powerful enough to push away fallen trees and break small boulders.

Her Unique Magic is called, “Arrow of the Wind”, she can control any direction her arrows to follow her targets with a special wind spell that only she can cast. She can make the wind faster and therefore have a greater impact on the arrows.

She can also use it as a shield, any projectiles within her line of sight can be slowed down or be redirected back to her opponent.

Elu’s magical capability is mostly nature based. Though these abilities are used to benefit her village more than mainly using them for combat, unless she needed to as a last resort. She seeks to use her skills in creating more contraptions that make life easier but not at the cost of the ecosystem.

Mato Sorrel

The chief of their village, he is a large bear beastman who is strong enough to carry about five pine logs. He is having trouble with the businessmen who try to trespass their land and try to trick him into signing a ‘beneficial’ contract, he refuses every time because he didn’t have the opportunity to gain outside knowledge. He isn’t narrow-minded to think that outsiders are greedy but he just hopes that his daughter will be able to handle herself in the academy and hopefully bring an end to the trespassers.

Alo Sorrel (23)

He has a weak body so he isn’t able to hunt or participate in activities involving strength, he chooses to help the village to advance economically while keeping the environment in mind. He often sends letters to Elu to inform her what has been happening in the village. He feels guilty that he can’t do much to prevent trespassers from walking all over their homeland due to his weak body.

The character’s name, “Elu” means “Full of Grace” and is a name of Native American origin while the last name, “Sorrel”, means “reddish brown”. The artist just thought this last name sounded better fitting for the character despite the meaning.

Elu’s dorm, Sagamore, was considered to be the equivalent of the Savanaclaw in NRC. Most of the students there are beastmen much like Savanaclaw. Though, Dragonstone, also shares this comparison but Sagamore has more beastmen than Dragonstone does.

She was originally going to be written with the same wise and calm personality like Pocahontas but then it was changed to be a tougher personality with the sense of adventure and navigation like John Smith. The calm personality went to her brother.

The artist chose to assign a bear to Elu as a nod to Brother Bear as well as to fit the characteristic of someone that looks cute but is actually fierce.

Elu was the hardest to design since the first design had too much details and took the longest to draw, not to mention drawing a mechanical bow was difficult for the artist since contraptions are tricky.

The artist is open to criticism and opinions regarding Native American culture since the internet isn’t always helpful.

Though the term itself is pretty self-explanatory, I’m going to clarify it for the context of this discussion. Crowdsourcing is a tossed salad of opinions and ideas from people of various backgrounds, usually who are not affiliated with large brands. Today, crowdsourcing has transformed mere opinions into catalysts for progress. So now the question is, how does crowdsourcing impact innovation and problem-solving across industries? Let’s look at the Malaysian examples of how crowdsourcing has impacted the technology, education and creative industries.

Well since you’ve given me a chance to ramble about my boy, you got any little quirks or story things that you want to talk about for Rhiki? I saw some drk stuff, so maybe like how does she handle that whole plot?

Whooo boy I would LOVE to talk about the DRK quests. I apologize if this runs long i will try to contain myself. Behind the scenes, I actually started playing the DRK quests at a recommendation from a friend. Towards the end of HW I had maxed out my DRG levels (before the cap was raised to 90) and didn't want to waste msq exp. I had been telling a friend of mine all of my thoughts about the plot and my character, and in her infinite wisdom she said "Oooo you should unlock DRK I think you'd like it." And she was RIGHT.

I know that "canonically" the first set of DRK quests is set before the start of HW, but for Rhiki as a character I have them set in my head as taking place after HW-proper, proceeding and bleeding into the post-patches. The level 30-50 questline really tapped into a lot of things Rhiki had been feeling since the ARR post-patches. Around the time of Moenbryda's death, Rhiki started to get the feeling that her "friends" in the Scions didn't really know her at all. (Specifically, Minfilia has a line that goes something along the lines of "You're so strong. I can always lean on you for support" which, for the way i had imagined Rhiki as a character, was laughably inaccurate.) It felt to Rhiki like everyone, including the other Scions, looked at her and, rather than seeing her as she was, projected their vision of the perfect hero, the hero they needed onto her. It got her wondering: if she wasn't the Warrior of Light would they even like her at all? At the same time, being treated like the solution to all of Eorzea's problems put a lot of pressure on her. People treated her like a hero, but she didn't feel like a hero - she didn't see herself as any stronger, or smarter, or kinder than anybody else. She definitely didn't think she was qualified to weigh in on complex geopolitical issues like the refugee crisis in Ul'dah or international relations with Ishgard. But she didn't want to let people down (and she didn't want them to be disappointed in her) so she just kind of talked herself into a "Fake-It-til-you-Make-it" attitude. But, even though she never acknowledged it, t little bit of resentment started to creep in. Why does she have to be the one who's strong for everyone else's sake? Who is she supposed to lean on when everything goes wrong?

She kind of held it together until Haurchefant died. Haurchefant had been just about her favorite person for a while by that point, and the two of them were close (they were probably in love but neither of them ever said it in so many words). So his death absolutely gutted Rhiki. She let shock (and a shiny, brand new thirst for revenge) carry her through the the chase to Azys Lla and the final confrontation with the Archbishop, but after that, when the battle was already won and there was nothing left to do, she kind of fell apart. She really struggled with grief and regret, but also with anger. Rhiki had never really hated anyone before - she'd disliked people, been annoyed with people, but never truly hated them. But oh boy she hated Zephirin and the Archbishop enough to make up for all the years of hate she'd missed out on. And the hate and anger didn't go away once they were both dead - they lingered in her even aft there was no one left to be angry at. She had never thought she was capable of those kind of violent, ugly feelings, and it scared her.

That was the backdrop when she found Fray's body (in my head, she spent a lot of time holed up in her room, but would sometimes sneak out at night so she could get some fresh air without having to worry about running into anyone she knew, which was when she heard about the trial). At first, she was totally on-board with what "Fray" taught her - at least this way she could channel all of those terrible emotions into something good. But the more time they spent together, and the more disparaging "Fray" became of her desire to help others, the more she started to think that, hey, maybe this person might possibly be a little unhinged. But, everyone's got their stuff, and in-for-a-penny and all that, so she stuck with it. The confrontation at Whitebrim was REALLY good for Rhiki. Somehow, seeing herself as another person who was hurting, made it much easier to treat herself with the same kindness she would treat someone else. While the negative feelings didn't go away after reconciling with Esteem, she learned to recognize and accept them rather than trying to bury them inside herself.

When she first met Sid, she thought he was kind of a tool. (He was.) But he DID remind her of a certain other tall, dark tool-ish friend she had recently failed to protect from being possessed by a dragon, which endeared him to her a little and made her more willing to hear him out. Then she met Rielle and decided she couldn't not help. While trying to find a way to keep Rielle safe, Sid and Rhiki bickered A LOT, about things like the merits of mercy, but also about how he treated Rielle. She definitely tried to keep Rielle's spirits up and treat her with as much warmth and kindness as she could, though neither of them were really qualified to be in charge of a 12-year-old, so how much good it did is debatable. (Also, she was a little worried that Sid might start rubbing off on Rielle, so she kind of tried to temper his influence when she thought he couldn't hear them. "Listen, I know Sid says a lot of stuff about forgiveness being a weakness and the world being terrible, but you've gotta understand he's working through some personal issues and he's projecting.")

Their encounter with the moogles put into words something Rhiki had been thinking about but couldn't find a way to express: that the root of most pain and anger is love. Love for a person, love for a homeland, love for an ideal, love for the person you were or could have been. When something we love is taken from us that love has nowhere to go, and it twists and grows into sorrow and anger. But it's important to keep sight of the love at the center of all of those feelings, so as not to be consumed by them. Being able to hear that sentiment out loud was something Rhiki really benefitted from. (She did feel pretty bad about what happened with Rielle's mom, and got into a bit of a tiff with Sid about it. She knew it was probably what had to happen, and it was Rielle's choice to make, but... "Did you have to behead the woman right in front of her? What is WRONG with you?!You couldn't have waited for us to, like, turn around, or walk twenty feet away or something?!") Anyway this is already super long so I'll cut it off here and not go into the Stormblood quests (though I'm always happy to give my feelings on those too!) As a side note: if you haven't already, I highly recommend reading the Journal entries for the Stormblood DRK quests. They're good stuff. But shrewd Knox leveraged powerful allies to evade government detection, his charity campaigns concealing the man’s true ambition.

To surrounding communities, Knox adopted the persona of a generous philanthropist frequently sponsoring fundraising galas in major cities. Yet behind this illusion of selfless benevolence drove a relentless scientist dangerously unchecked by ethical constraints. Only his inner circle witnessed the intravenous alchemy and psychosurgery trials that granted militarized subjects amplified pain tolerance or subdued empathy at the expense of their psyche’s stability.

Knox ensured no average citizen detected his well-masked dual life. If his medical innovations meant ravaging minds, if the Elderly’s geopolitical agenda meant sheltering wanted extremists, the profits justified the means. His New York glitterati supporters had no complaints, dazzled by his generous donations and family’s sterling reputation. But intelligence agencies eyeing Knox’s empire sensed darker truths lurking below all that unblemished white marble.

Post Dr A██

Tensions erupted when Knox uncovered The Elderly’s true jihadist agenda for Dr. A██ and other extremist assets like Imam Ocean, Khamrozi, and Lai Amiron. Though obsessed with unlocking the brain’s mysteries without ethical constraints, Knox recoiled at directly enabling religious terrorism overseas no matter the profits. His hospitals would empower fanatics no more, regardless of shared sympathies against certain Southeast Asian regimes.

When Dr. A██ returned from a clandestine Middle East training camp clearly further radicalized for impending strikes on civilian targets, Knox revoked his access credentials citing security risks. Then Imam Ocean and his two henchmen arrived unannounced to forcibly retrieve sensitive operational documents only for Knox’s private military contractors to forcibly deport them.

These assertive actions constituted an unmistakable purge dissociating Knox from the Elders’ planned attacks. He would stretch medical ethics but not outright enable extremist mayhem through his facilities. Severing those treasonous ties also served self-interest, as discovery of such collusion would thoroughly undermine his public repute as philanthropist should scandals erupt on foreign shores. Knox’s ambitions pushed boundaries but even he recoiled at the greatest moral crossing lines. For the Elders, his defiance jeopardized major operations. And the shadowy coalition was not one to tolerate disloyalty from once-useful assets.

Personality:

Even in his early 20s with limited experience, Kit exuded relentless confidence and ambition to expand his family’s mental health facilities despite initial pushback. Where others saw merely his youth, Kit saw dramatic developments propelled by his extraordinary abilities. He held little regard for naysayers, consumed by his grand scientific visions and generational duty to advance his father’s life work through boundary-pushing innovation. Flashplate

Simple trap, level 1-4 (moderate threat)

This trap is a layer of black powder between two layers of cotton, placed inside a chest or safe. A flint striker is attached to the locking mechanism; if someone attempts to open the lock without also pressing a button or using a key that interferes with the striker, the flashplate catches fire. Harming a thief is a secondary consideration to destroying any documents or other flammable, sensitive goods stored in the container.

Trigger. A creature that opens the container triggers the trap.

Effect. The creature makes a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw. On a success, they can either save items in the chest from being incinerated (taking damage as if they failed the saving throw), or they can take no damage from the trap (and items in the chest burn to ashes in moments). On a failure, they take 2d6 fire damage and the items in the container are destroyed.

Countermeasures. A successful DC 12 Wisdom (Perception) check detects the flint striker in the lock, and a successful DC 12 Dexterity (thieves’ tools) check blocks the striker’s movement. Alternately, a DC 15 Wisdom (Perception) check detects a catch in the container’s door or lid; pressing this catch disables the striker and allows the container to be opened safely.

Petard Door Trap

Simple trap, level 5-10 (dangerous threat)

A petard is an early form of shaped charge, used in siege warfare and breaching doors or thin walls. The petard weighs 25 lb. and is portable and deployable with 1 minute of effort by a skilled user; running twine or a chain to a closed door makes a petard door trap. Triggering the trap sets off an explosion that blows the door apart, potentially injuring anyone on the other side. The trap is set differently depending on which way the door opens, but the effect is the same.

Trigger. A creature that opens the door from the other side triggers the trap.

Effect. The door explodes, and creatures on that side of the door and within 10 feet of it make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw. A creature that fails this saving throw takes 4d10 fire damage and is blinded and deafened for 1 minute. A creature that succeeds takes half damage and is not blinded or deafened. The explosion emits a boom audible out to 300 feet.

Countermeasures. A creature that looks through the door (through a keyhole, through a window in the door, or the like) automatically detects the petard. Knocking or tapping at the door can detect the presence of something unusual with a DC 15 Wisdom (Perception) check.

Detonating the petard door trap while no one is in its 10-foot area of effect is the most direct solution. Otherwise, a character can cut the twine or break the chain connecting the trap to the door with a DC 15 Dexterity (thieves’ tools) check. Knocking the petard door trap down so that it isn’t placed against the door makes it explode, but halves the damage that it deals and expands its area of effect to include creatures within 10 feet of it on the other side of the door.

Blast Sphere Launcher

Complex trap, level 5-10 (deadly threat)

This marvel of construction and destruction is usually placed in an interior chamber, to protect it from interference by enemy creatures, but it can be used outdoors as well if hidden or assigned some screening defenders. The blast sphere launcher launches bombs on a short fuse, which deal damage to nearby creatures. It can be used to delay and scatter an advancing force, or during combat if the defenders are flying or resistant or immune to fire and thunder damage.

Trigger. This trap activates when a creature within 5 feet of the launcher turns it on with a successful DC 10 Intelligence (Investigation) check, or when a creature steps on a large pressure plate that is between 100 and 180 feet from the launcher.

Initiative. The trap acts on initiative count 20 and initiative count 10.

Active Elements. The Blast Sphere Launcher includes a launcher cannon that fires incendiary rounds at targets more than 60 feet away, concussive rounds at targets more than 30 and less than 60 feet away, and lengths of chain at targets closer than 30 feet. It fires once on initiative count 20 and once on initiative count 10. When there are enemy creatures in more than one of these ranges, the Blast Sphere Launcher fires at the nearest range that has an enemy in it.

Incendiary Rounds. The Blast Sphere Launcher fires two metal spheres filled alchemist’s fire. One lands in an empty space within 5 feet of a random enemy creature; the other lands 15 feet away from all creatures. The spheres are Tiny objects weighing 15 lb. They are superheated as they count down toward explosion, and a creature that touches them takes 3 (1d6) fire damage. On the next initiative count that matches the one on which they were fired, they explode. Creatures within 10 feet of a sphere roll a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 16 (3d10) fire damage on a failure, or half damage on a success. The ground in that area is set on fire for 1 minute, and a creature starting its turn in that effect area takes 5 (1d10) fire damage.

Concussive Rounds. The Blast Sphere Launcher fires two metal spheres resonating with thunderous energy. One lands in an empty space within 5 feet of a random enemy creature; the other lands 15 feet away from all creatures. The spheres are Tiny objects weighing 15 lb. On the Blast Sphere Launcher’s next initiative count, they explode; they also explode immediately if touched. Creatures within 10 feet of a sphere roll a DC 15 Strength saving throw. A creature that fails this saving throw takes 16 (3d10) thunder damage and is pushed 10 feet away and knocked prone; a creature that succeeds takes half damage and no further effect.

Chain Shot. The Blast Sphere Launcher fires a length of chain. Creatures in a 30-ft cone from the launcher roll a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw. A creature that fails this saving throw takes 18 (4d8) bludgeoning damage and is restrained until the end of their next turn. A creature that succeeds takes half damage and is not restrained.

Dynamic Elements. The dynamic aspect of the Blast Sphere Launcher is that Concussive Rounds and Chain Shot become an active part of combat as the character get closer to the launcher itself, and the available reaction time for each shot is shorter than the shot before it.

Countermeasures. The primary countermeasure is moving away from incendiary and concussive rounds before they explode, or moving the spheres. A creature within 5 feet of the launcher can use their action to make a Dexterity (thieves’ tools) or Intelligence (Investigation) check against DC 20. On a success, the launcher loses the use of one of its Active Elements.

The Blast Sphere Launcher is often protected by a walls of stone or brick that grant it three-quarters cover. It is an object with 150 hit points, an AC of 15, and immunity to poison and psychic damage.
